B Vitamins in Promote Stem Cell Proliferation

TEHRAN (FNA)- Folates can stimulate stem cell proliferation independently of their role as vitamins, according to a new study that used an in vitro culture and animal model system in their findings.

Folates, whether supplemental B vitamins or natural folates found in food, are essential for the proper functioning of all cells in the body and are critical to prevent birth defects.

The study in Developmental Cell, shows for the first time that an adult stem cell population is controlled by an external factor arising from outside the animal--bacterial folate. In this case, that animal was a small roundworm model organism known as Caenorhabditis elegans.

"Our study shows that germ stem cells in Caenorhabditis elegans are stimulated to divide by a specific folate that comes from their bacterial diet," said the study's co-senior author Edward Kipreos, a professor in UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "Folates are essential B-group vitamins. However, we show that the ability of a specific folate to stimulate germ cells is independent of its role as a vitamin, implying that it acts directly as a signaling molecule."

Naturally occurring folates exist in many chemical forms; folates are found in food, as well as in metabolically active forms in the human body. Folic acid is the major synthetic form found in fortified foods and vitamin supplements.

"Since its discovery in 1945, folate has been the subject of many studies that resulted in more than 50,000 publications. The finding in this study is the first of its kind because it presents evidence that folate is involved in roles other than those that were known before," said the study's co-senior author Jacob Selhub, director of the Vitamin Metabolism Laboratory at Tufts University.

Eating Red Meat May Bring On Kidney Failure

TEHRAN (FNA)- Red meat intake was strongly associated with an increased risk of kidney failure among Chinese adults in Singapore who were followed for an average of 15.5 years, a new report suggests. No association was found with intakes of poultry, fish, eggs, or dairy products, while soy and legumes appeared to be slightly protective.

Increasing numbers of individuals are developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), and many progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), which requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. Current guidelines recommend restricting dietary protein intake to help manage CKD and slow progression to ESRD; however, there is limited evidence that overall dietary protein restriction or limiting specific food sources of protein intake may slow kidney function decline in the general population.

To examine the relationship between dietary intake of major sources of protein and kidney function, a team led by Woon-Puay Koh, MBBS (Hons), PhD (Duke-NUS Medical School and Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health in National University of Singapore) analyzed data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a prospective study of 63,257 Chinese adults in Singapore. This is a population where 97% of red meat intake consisted of pork. Other food sources of protein included poultry, fish/shellfish, eggs, dairy products, soy, and legumes.

After an average follow-up of 15.5 years, the researchers found that red meat intake was strongly associated with an increased risk of ESRD in a dose-dependent manner. People consuming the highest amounts (top 25%) of red meat had a 40% increased risk of developing ESRD compared with people consuming the lowest amounts (lowest 25%) No association was found with intakes of poultry, fish, eggs, or dairy products, while soy and legumes appeared to be slightly protective. Substituting one serving of red meat with other sources of protein reduced the risk of ESRD by up to 62%.

"We embarked on our study to see what advice should be given to CKD patients or to the general population worried about their kidney health regarding types or sources of protein intake," said Dr. Koh. "Our findings suggest that these individuals can still maintain protein intake but consider switching to plant-based sources; however, if they still choose to eat meat, fish/shellfish and poultry are better alternatives to red meat."

Ibuprofen & other common drugs, supplements may cause, exacerbate heart failure – study

Commonly-prescribed and -used medications, such as Ibuprofen, and nutritional or natural supplements may trigger or worsen heart failure, according to a new statement released by the American Heart Association.

The statement identifies drugs, supplements, and alternative remedies that "may cause or exacerbate heart failure" when taken with other medications or taken to treat certain conditions, the American Heart Association (AHA) said in a scientific statement released Monday on the website of the AHA journal Circulation.

Patients with heart failure, the leading cause of hospitalization for people 65 years of age and older, should discuss in detail with their healthcare provider every prescription, over-the-counter medication, nutritional supplement, or natural remedy, such as an herb, that they ingest, said Robert L. Page II, chair of the committee that formulated the statement.

“Since many of the drugs heart failure patients are taking are prescribed for conditions such as cancer, neurological conditions or infections, it is crucial but difficult for healthcare providers to reconcile whether a medication is interacting with heart failure drugs or making heart failure worse,”said Page.

For example, common heartburn medications or cold remedies can come with high levels of sodium, which can be detrimental to patients with heart failure conditions, the AHA said.

“Patients have been taught to read food labels for sodium content, but they also need to read labels on over-the-counter medications and natural supplements,” said Page.

Heart failure patients take an average of seven prescription medications per day, Reuters reported.

Certain medications can be toxic to heart muscle cells or alter how the heart muscle contracts, the AHA said, or interact with heart failure medications in a way that ultimately negates their benefits.

Heart failure is defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a condition in which "the heart cannot pump enough blood and oxygen to support other organs in your body." Nearly 6 million adults in the US have heart failure, the CDC says, and one in nine deaths in 2009 included heart failure among its contributing conditions.

Around half of people who are identified as having conditions of heart failure die within five years of diagnosis, the CDC says.

Supplements that contain ephedra can cause a spike in blood pressure, while other complementary or alternative supplements − such as St. John’s wort, ginseng, hawthorn, danshen, and green tea − can interfere with some common heart failure medications, the AHA said.

“My hope is that this statement will be used by healthcare providers in all medical specialties to educate themselves about drugs that can exacerbate or cause heart failure,” said Page, a professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and the Department of Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine.

Nobel laureates to Greenpeace: ‘Abandon your campaign against GMOs’

Over 100 Nobel laureates have signed a letter asking Greenpeace to halt its campaign against genetically modified crops and feeds, especially Golden Rice. They argue that GMOs can offer life-saving food sources to the world’s poorest regions.

The group is holding a news conference on Thursday to discuss the topic at the National Press Club in Washington DC on Thursday.

“WE CALL UPON GOVERNMENTS OF THE WORLD to reject Greenpeace's campaign against Golden Rice specifically, and crops and foods improved through biotechnology in general; and to do everything in their power to oppose Greenpeace's actions and accelerate the access of farmers to all the tools of modern biology, especially seeds improved through biotechnology,” the signed letter states.

“Opposition based on emotion and dogma contradicted by data must be stopped. How many poor people in the world must die before we consider this a ‘crime against humanity’?”

The Nobel laureates argue that genetically modified Golden Rice has the ability to decrease Vitamin A deficiencies that trigger blindness and even death in young children living in the poorest parts of the world.

“Greenpeace has spearheaded opposition to Golden Rice, which has the potential to reduce or eliminate much of the death and disease caused by a Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which has the greatest impact on the poorest people in Africa and Southeast Asia,” the letter said.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) statistics cited in the letter, around 50 million people worldwide suffer Vitamin A deficiency. This includes at least 40 percent of the kids under the age of five.

The men behind the campaign are Richard Roberts, chief scientific officer of New England Biolabs and Phillip Sharp, the winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for the discovery of genetic sequences known as introns.

The surge in genetically engineered (GE) crops since the 1990s has led to a fierce debate over their effect on human health, environmental matters, food security and corporate power.

A new report by the National Research Council, which is criticized for its ties to industry, stated that consumption of genetically modified food has not harmed human health. “The committee concluded that no differences have been found that implicate a higher risk to human health safety from these GE foods than from their non-GE counterparts,” it said.

However, the findings were criticized by Food & Water Watch’s report, “Under the Influence: The National Research Council and GMOs,” which said the NRC accepted millions of dollars in funding from biotech companies.

Statistics reveal that US has been consuming genetically engineered (GE) crops for two decades, with over 90 percent of feed corn, soybeans, and cotton produced in the US labeled as GE.

Supporters of GE crops believe that GMOs have not had a negative impact on human health in that time.

However, opponents of GE foods argue that there are long-term indirect effects that need to be considered.

For example, corporations like Monsanto and Dow Chemical sell their own patented seeds that, given their genetic modification, can be mixed with biocides to kill pests and weeds. This practice can easily jeopardize long-term health of the soil and the biodiversity of a local environment that allows for natural pollination.

The Union of Concerned Scientists believe that “while the risks of genetic engineering are often exaggerated or misrepresented, GE crops do have the potential to cause a variety of health problems and environmental impacts.”

6 Zika-related pregnancies in US, half carried to term with birth defects

In addition to the three babies born with Zika-related defects in the US, three other pregnancies with evidence of the virus were lost, according to the first Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report on Zika pregnancies since their registry launched.

The CDC reported six babies in the US had Zika-related birth defects on Thursday. Three of the babies with evidence of the Zika virus infection survived, but the three others were lost pregnancies.

It was the agency’s first report since launching the Zika pregnancy registry on June 9.

“Although these outcomes occurred in pregnancies with laboratory evidence of Zika virus infection, we do not know whether they were caused by Zika virus infection or other factors,” said the CDC in a released statement.

Zika has caused alarm throughout the Americas since numerous cases of the birth defect microcephaly, linked to the mosquito-borne virus, was reported in Brazil, the country hardest hit by the current outbreak. The rare birth defect is marked by unusually small head size and potentially severe developmental problems. More than 1,400 cases of microcephaly in babies have been confirmed in Brazil.

The CDC declined to provide further details on the six babies. Nor did they say whether the three lost pregnancies were the result of termination, stillbirth or miscarriage. In early June, two US cases of babies with microcephaly were born in Hawaii and New Jersey.

Those two US cases involved women who contracted the virus either outside the US in areas with active Zika outbreaks or through unprotected sex with an infected partner. There have not yet been any cases reported of local transmission of the virus in the US.

"The pattern that we're seeing here in the US among travelers is very similar to what we're seeing in other places like Colombia and Brazil," Dr. Denise Jamieson, co-leader of the CDC Zika pregnancy task force, said in a telephone interview with Reuters.

The CDC said it will begin issuing regular reports on Thursdays of poor outcomes of pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible Zika virus infection in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. The agency hopes the registry will contribute understanding about the effects of the virus and ensure the most up-to-date information about pregnancy outcomes with Zika virus are publicly available.

“The poor birth outcomes reported include those that have been detected in infants infected with Zika before or during birth, including microcephaly (unusually small head size and severe developmental problems), excess fluid in the brain cavities and surrounding the brain, absent or poorly formed brain structures… or other problems resulting from damage to the brain that affects nerves, muscles and bones such a clubfoot or inflexible joints,” said the CDC in a statement.

Hang up? Major US study finds link between cancer and cellphone radiation

Hang up? Major US study finds link between cancer and cellphone radiation

With the majority of humans having access to a mobile phone the debate whether their use can cause cancer has been a heated one. Now a US government study has found a link between cellphone radiation and cancer in rats.

The unsettling findings are the result of a US$25 million study by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) – a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – which has been underway for the past 2.5 years.

Although a full report on the study is not yet finished, the NTP has released its partial results early.

The research studied rats to determine whether the radio-frequency (RF) radiation emitted by mobile phones can cause cancer. To do so, pregnant rats were placed in special chambers. Once their pups were born, they were treated with RF radiation for approximately nine hours per day.

“All RF exposures were conducted over a period of approximately 18 hours using a continuous cycle of 10 minutes on (exposed) and 10 minutes off (not exposed), for a total daily exposure time of approximately 9 hours a day, 7 days/week,” the findings state.

Scientists found that male rats exposed to two types of RF radiation were significantly more likely than unexposed rats to develop a type of brain cancer called glioma. They also had higher chance of developing schwannoma, a rare and malignant heart tumor.

“The occurrences of two tumor types in male Harlan Sprague Dawley rats exposed to RFR (radiofrequency radiation), malignant gliomas in the brain and schwannomas of the heart, were considered of particular interest, and are the subject of this report,” the report states.

Female rats, on the other hand, did not experience significantly higher cancer rates.

“No biologically significant effects were observed in the brain or heart of female rats regardless of modulation,” the report states.

The radiation received by rats was “not very different” from what humans are exposed to when they use mobile phones, said Chris Portier, a former associate director of the NTP and the person who commissioned the study, as cited by Mother Jones.

As researchers increased the intensity of the radiation, the incidence of cancer in the rats also increased. The highest level of radiation was five to seven times as strong as what humans typically receive while using a mobile phone.

“I think this is a game changer,” Portier said. “We seriously have to look at this issue again in considerable detail.”

Scientists at the NTP have scheduled a conference for Friday to explain the partial results. The full report is due to be released next year.

The findings are significant for the majority of humans on Earth, with a 2013 UN report finding that out of the world's seven billion people, six billion had access to mobile phones. Meanwhile, only 4.5 billion people were found to have access to working toilets.

Giving up gluten does more harm than good in more ways than you think – study

Going gluten free may not be the shortcut to getting ready for swimsuit season after all. While avoiding gluten is vital to those living with Celiac disease, everyone else can resume eating bread – and probably should, according to a recent study.

A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that giving up gluten may be more harmful for those not suffering from Celiac disease or wheat allergies than beneficial. The author of the study, Norelle Rizkalla Reilly of Columbia University’s Medical Center, points out that “Gluten-free packaged foods frequently contain a greater density of fat and sugar than their gluten-containing counterparts.”

“A GFD [gluten free diet] also may lead to deficiencies in B vitamins, folate, and iron, given a lack of nutrient fortification of many gluten-free products,” Reilly added.

The study found that many of the conceptions about the gluten-free diet are flawed. Although GFD is one of the only treatments for Celiac disease, 47 percent of Americans believe it is a fad. However, 25 percent nonetheless consume gluten free food. Why this is, no one really knows.

The study refers to a 2015 survey of 1,500 US adults that had adopted a gluten-free lifestyle. Though the majority reported having “no reason” for going gluten free, 26 percent believed that they were choosing a healthier lifestyle by doing so. The least common response to the survey was “I have gluten sensitivity.”

People believing that a gluten free diet is healthier may be mistaken in their assumptions, as the study found that consumers could be ingesting more harmful chemicals than they would if on less restrictive diets. For example, the study claims that “Arsenic is frequently present in inorganic form in rice, a concern for those on a GFD given that rice is a common ingredient in gluten-free processed foods.”

The boom in the gluten-free market that has resulted from these misconceptions has not necessarily helped those with Celiac either. For truly gluten-sensitive people, consuming wheat protein can trigger painful, sometimes very serious, gastrointestinal inflammation and other irritations.

Kristen Deschamps, who suffers from Celiac, described it to NPR as “severe stomach pain, like a very sharp stabbing − sometimes to the point where I can’t move for several hours.”

Deschamps explained that, while the expansion of gluten free products has generally improved her quality of life, the widespread adoption of the diet among the general populace has not.

“The biggest problem I experience is that restaurant servers don’t understand the difference between being celiac and going gluten-free as a lifestyle choice,” she explained. This has caused gluten to end up in her food, triggering a reaction.

A 2013 op-ed piece for Jezebel describes how the gluten-free trend is more damaging to the Celiac population than helpful. The author, Elissa Strauss, complains of not being taken seriously when discussing her gluten sensitivity, while lamenting a lack of knowledge about what it actually is.

She describes seeing gluten free food “stuffed alongside their gluten-containing counterparts in bakery displays. Considering even a few splashes of soy sauce, in which wheat is a minor ingredient, can trigger my celiac, a few crumbs of something not gluten-free is just not an option for me.”

Fracking wastewater may cause fertility problems – study

Water pollution from chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, could pose a threat to the health of West Virginians, particularly in terms of reproduction, according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Missouri announced on Wednesday that they had found high levels of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in surface water near a fracking wastewater disposal facility near Fayetteville, West Virginia.

“We found levels of these endocrine disrupting chemicals high enough to threaten health,” Susan C. Nagel, director of the study and an associate professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri, told Buzzfeed.

EDCs can interfere with hormones in animals and humans. They can also cause cancer, birth defects, and developmental disorders, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.
