Kiev rebuffs Indonesian peace efforts
Ukraine has argued that the proposed ceasefire plan is tantamount to its “surrender” to Russia
Ukraine has rejected Indonesia’s proposal for a peace settlement with Moscow, arguing that Jakarta’s plan would only serve Russia’s interests.

President Vladimir Zelensky’s top adviser Mikhail Podoliak wrote on Twitter on Saturday that the roadmap “frankly looks like a twin of the Russian proposal … about the surrender [of Ukraine].”

The adviser reiterated Kiev’s position that the “only one realistic proposal” would be for Russia to “withdraw from the sovereign territory of Ukraine.”

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko also insisted that Russia should surrender its newly incorporated regions, which Kiev says were illegally occupied. “There can be no alternative scenarios,” he said in a post on Facebook.

“Ceasefire without the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine will allow Russia to win time, regroup, fortify the occupied territories and accumulate forces for a new wave of aggression,” Nikolenko wrote.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore on Saturday, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto suggested that both Russian and Ukrainian troops withdraw 15km (nearly 10 miles) from their current positions, creating a demilitarized zone that would be monitored by UN peacekeepers. He also proposed holding UN-sponsored referendums to determine the future “disputed” territories.

Moscow has so far not commented on the proposal. Russian officials stressed in the past that, in order to achieve a lasting peace, Ukraine must drop its bid to join NATO in favor of neutrality and recognize Russia’s recent territorial acquisitions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that there was “no basis” meaningful negotiations at the moment because Kiev and the West “don’t have any political will to take into account our country’s goals and concerns.”

Earlier this year, China presented its own version of a roadmap for peace between Russia and Ukraine, which was also promptly rejected by Kiev.

Western officials have argued that Ukraine should negotiate with Russia on its own terms. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that a ceasefire that would in any way benefit Moscow would not produce “a just and lasting peace.”

The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as two other former Ukrainian territories – the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions – became parts of Russia after holding referendums on the matter in September 2022. Crimea did the same in 2014, shortly after the Western-backed coup in Kiev.

Russia launched its military operation in the neighboring state in February 2022, citing the need to protect the people of Donbass and Kiev’s failure to implement the 2014-2015 Minsk peace accords.

Russia reacts to Indonesian peace plan
Any effort to resolve the conflict in Ukraine is welcome, a senior diplomat said of the proposal
Moscow appreciates any initiatives by other nations to achieve peace, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko has said, reacting to an Indonesian proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine. Kiev has rejected the plan, branding it as beneficial to Russia.

“We welcome the efforts by all nations that are aimed at the peaceful resolution of this conflict,” the senior Russian diplomat told TASS on Monday, when asked about the Indonesian idea. He added that his department had not received any formal proposals from its Indonesian counterpart, but had read media reports about it.

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto outlined the peace initiative last Saturday during the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore. It involves stopping active hostilities, deploying a UN peacekeeping force to separate Russian and Ukrainian troops, and organizing new referendums in some of the contested territories to allow people living there self-determination.

Kiev rejected the Indonesian roadmap and reiterated its demand that Russian troops withdraw from all territories that it claims to be under its sovereignty. Last year, when four formerly Ukrainian regions voted to split from the country and join Russia, the Ukrainian government dismissed the referendums as a “sham.”

“A ceasefire without the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine will allow Russia to win time, regroup, fortify the occupied territories and accumulate forces for a new wave of aggression,” Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolenko said.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has insisted that the only acceptable way forward would be the one he set forth in his so-called “peace plan,” which boils down to Moscow conceding defeat and paying reparations, with the international community offering Ukraine a generous assistance program. Kiev has banned any talks with Russia as long as Vladimir Putin remains its president.

The US and its allies, which are bankrolling the Ukrainian government as it confronts Russia, have claimed that the time for peace talks may come only after their client state acquires a “stronger position” by achieving battlefield successes using Western-provided weapons.

Ukraine begins ‘large-scale offensive’ – Russian MOD
Kiev’s troops have unsuccessfully attempted to break through the front line in Donbass, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said
Russian forces have successfully repelled a “large-scale offensive” by Ukrainian troops along five sections of the front line in Donbass, the Russian Defense Ministry said in the early hours of Monday.

According to the ministry, the assault began on Sunday morning. “The enemy’s goal was to breach our defenses in what they assumed was the most vulnerable section of the frontline,” it said in a statement.

“The enemy has failed to reach its goals and was unsuccessful,” the ministry added.

Russian officials said Ukraine had deployed the 23rd and the 31st mechanized brigades from its “strategic reserves,” which were supported in battle by other units.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost more than 250 service members, 16 tanks, three infantry vehicles, and 21 armored vehicles,” the Defense Ministry claimed.

It released a video of what it said were strikes on Ukrainian military vehicles.

"敵はその目標に到達することができず、失敗した "と同省は付け加えた。

Ukrainian forces attempted to mount a large-scale offensive in the southern part of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Russia's Defense Ministry claimed on Monday.

In a statement, the ministry said that on Sunday, Ukrainian troops attempted to attack Russian forces using six mechanized and two tank battalions. However, it added that as a result of the actions of the ‘East’ military grouping, as well as owing to air strikes and artillery fire near the settlements of Neskuchnoye and Novodarovka, both of which are some 100km west of Donetsk, the Ukrainian forces incurred “significant losses.”

As a result of the botched attack, in the last 24 hours Ukraine has lost up to 300 service members, 16 tanks, 26 armored and 14 ordinary vehicles, the statement read. “The enemy failed to accomplish its goals,” the ministry concluded.

The ministry’s statement comes after earlier in the day it said that Ukraine had tried to break through Russian defenses in five sections of the front line in Donbass using its “strategic reserves,” but failed to do so.

Ukrainian officials have for months promised to launch a counteroffensive, which initially was expected to happen in spring. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has on numerous occasions said that Kiev was “ready” for the push but “still needs a bit more time” in order to receive more Western weapons.

White House makes Ukraine conflict prediction
Kiev will recapture important territory, President Biden’s top adviser has said
The US believes that Ukraine’s long-planned counteroffensive against the Russian troops will ultimately allow Kiev to recover some lost ground, the White House national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said on Sunday.

Speaking to CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, Sullivan was confident that Ukraine would recapture “strategically significant territory.”

“Exactly how much, in what places, that will be up to developments on the ground as the Ukrainians get this counteroffensive underway,” the official said.

“But we believe that the Ukrainians will meet with success in this counteroffensive.”

Sullivan added that the outcome of the operation will have a “major impact” on future negotiations.

Hours after Sullivan’s remarks were aired, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Ukrainian forces had failed to break through the defensive lines in Donbass, suffering heavy losses. The MOD described the operation as “a large-scale offensive.”

Ukrainian officials have been sending mixed signals in recent weeks regarding their preparations for the much-touted effort to push back the Russians.

President Vladimir Zelensky said on Saturday that the army was ready for the counteroffensive. His deputy chief of staff, Igor Zhovkva, however, said the same day that Kiev had still not accumulated enough weapons for a successful offensive campaign.

NATO member questions Kiev about attack inside Russia
Belgium is concerned over reports claiming arms it sent to Kiev were used in raids on Russian territory, local media said
Brussels is concerned over media reports claiming that weapons it sent to Kiev were used by militants to launch incursions into Russia, several Belgian media outlets reported on Sunday, adding that the government will demand an official explanation from Ukraine on the issue.

Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder and Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib will “contact the Ukrainian authorities and ask for clarifications,” the defense minister’s office confirmed to Belgium’s RTBF broadcaster.

The documents accompanying each weapons delivery from Belgium “explicitly state” that the military equipment can only be distributed to the regular armed forces and used only to “defend” Ukrainian territory, the media added.

“These weapons are therefore not authorized for isolated groups that have an internal Russian agenda,” a Belgian official told another local media outlet, Le Soir. The Belgian media also described the ‘Freedom of Russia Legion’ and the ‘Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK)’ – two Kiev-backed militant groups that are said to be in possession of Western arms – as groups that have “neo-Nazi” members within their ranks.

The RDK and the ‘Freedom of Russia Legion’ were responsible for several incursions into Russian territory in March and May 2023. Photos and videos published by the militants from their raid last month, as well as images released by the Russian Defense Ministry in the wake of the clashes with the militants, suggested that their sabotage groups made use of US and Polish armored vehicles, as well as Belgian and Czech assault rifles.

The Pentagon and the US State Department expressed doubts regarding the authenticity of the images. On Saturday, the Washington Post reported, citing sources linked to US intelligence, that the militants did use weapons and heavy equipment supplied to Kiev by their Western backers.

The May raid ended up with the Russian forces killing “over 70 Ukrainian terrorists” and destroying “four armored combat vehicles, and five pickup trucks,” the Russian Defense Ministry said at that time. The incursion resulted in one civilian death and 12 injuries, according to Russian authorities.

On Sunday, the two militant groups sought to launch another cross-border raid into Russia’s Belgorod Region, its governor said. The militants were “dispersed” and pushed back into Ukrainian territory, the defense ministry said later the same day.

‘Suspicious balloon’ found near NATO-Russia border – media
The small inflatable, which reportedly had inscriptions in Cyrillic, was found near a military base

A small balloon was found in a corn field in northeastern Poland early on Saturday, several local media outlets have reported. Police attended the scene and the inflatable was eventually seized by the military for examination, according to the reports.

The balloon was found just kilometers from a major Polish military facility, where a training ground is located. “The services are in the process of checking this object,” the spokesman for the Operational Command of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Jacek Goryszewski, told journalists. He added that no comment would be made regarding the origin of the balloon until investigations have concluded.

According to Goryszewski, the object is “most likely… a weather balloon.” He also said military air defense radars had not registered any Polish airspace violations on the day the balloon was found. Some Polish media speculated that the balloon may have had other purposes.

A farmer, who was the first to spot the balloon in the field, told the Polish media that it had a polystyrene box and an antenna attached to a foil dome. Inscriptions in Cyrillic were also visible on the balloon, according to the farmer.

According to Poland’s WP broadcaster, an unidentified object allegedly entered Polish airspace from Belarus. The Polish Defense Ministry said on May 13 that the object could have been a “surveillance balloon,” adding that radars had lost it somewhere near the city of Rypin in central Poland.

The Armed Forces Operational Command then launched a search operation in the area that lasted for three weeks but yielded no results. The Polish government security center issued an alert for nearby regions, urging people to be on the lookout for “an… object resembling a balloon.” “If you find it, do not pick it up, notify the nearest police station,” the alert said. However, there have been no reports of that object being found.

Russia conducted airstrikes overnight targeting Ukrainian military airfields, and delivering significant damage to aircraft and facilities, Moscow’s Defense Ministry has said.

The attack, which carried with the use of “long-range precision-guided air-launched weapons,” achieved its goal, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

“Command posts, a radar installation, Ukrainian aviation equipment, and storage facilities with weapons and ammunition were hit,” the statement read.

In another strike, near the city of Dnepropetrovsk on the Dnepr River, a Ukrainian drone assembly workshop was destroyed, the ministry said.

In recent months, the West has warned of an imminent Ukrainian ‘spring offensive’ to defeat Russian forces beyond Crimea. This alleged attack, said to involve tens of thousands of troops equipped with advanced weaponry and backed by western intelligence and logistic support, has been a topic of discussion for several months. However, recent events suggest that this so-called ‘attack’ may be a series of covert sabotage operations, assassinations, drone strikes and targeted killings of Russian officers in Russia and various parts of the world, carried out by unknown secret special forces.

According to security sources in the Syrian capital Damascus, “an attack occurred in the Khan Shaykhun area of Maarat al-Numan, Idlib, in the last week of last month of May. A group of highly trained and unknown special forces broke through the barbed wire …

perimeter protecting Russian troops. The attackers successfully infiltrated the compound, targeting and killing several Russian officers. The attacking force, estimated to consist of six Special Forces members, quickly withdrew after being covered by four other members who stayed behind to detonate explosives, diverting attention from the primary objective of carrying out the targeted killing and ensuring the safe escape of the attackers.”

Sources in Syria indicate that “the attackers disabled surveillance cameras before entering the compound, allowing them to carry out their operation with precision and leave without suffering any casualties. They then fled to eastern Syria in vehicles waiting near the site.”

The sources believe such operations are aimed at sowing confusion among Russian forces and sending a message that they can be targeted worldwide. These incidents are intended to demonstrate that their adversaries have advanced intelligence capabilities, the audacity to monitor Russian movements and the ability to carry out missions against them, including assassinating their officers.

Despite the lack of multiple sources confirming this specific operation, various pieces of information converge to indicate a significant event in the Khan Shaykhun area in that particular week, leading to heightened alert and confusion among Russian forces. It is important to note that Syrian society comprises individuals with different affiliations, including pro-Damascus and opposition forces. The United States and Israel have used many individuals as an integral part of their national security apparatus, enabling them to conduct security operations against targets inside Syria. This use of Syrians was exemplified by the relocation of specific individuals, including the White Helmets, to Israel in 2018 before the Syrian army’s incursion into the south.

Syria has witnessed several security incidents throughout the war targeting the pre-conflict Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers. These target-killing attacks have involved sophisticated explosive devices, sniper attacks and groups trained and equipped with bladed weapons and silencers. Some of these groups have even managed to infiltrate Israel, causing alarm and forcing a shift of operations to southern Syria.

Russia has also experienced sabotage operations, such as suicide drones targeting Moscow, the Kremlin and the border city of Belgorod, and attempts to infiltrate armed groups into Russian territory. These operations appear designed to distract and confuse the Kremlin and expose its alleged inability to protect the country while its forces are engaged in Ukraine.

In the absence of credible evidence, the lack of preparations commensurate with a large-scale military operation such as the one Ukraine is discussing, involving tens of thousands of troops, casts doubt on the feasibility and immediacy of such an attack. The build-up of forces, the establishment of logistics and the transport of troops and ammunition to the front lines all leave traces that intelligence services can detect through human and electronic surveillance. However, there is no concrete evidence or indication of the necessary preparations, including preliminary bombings, road construction or the removal of obstacles to the passage of troops. This suggests that the likelihood of an imminent large-scale attack is either unrealistic or at least not close.

Consequently, the ongoing covert war being waged by the United States against Russia abroad and on Russian territory may be unfolding through these covert operations. This sabotage and targeted assassinations may represent the promised war that America has openly supported and prepared alongside Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin has refrained from using non-conventional weapons that could have devastating consequences for Russia’s friends and trigger a coup against Moscow.

Without clean wars, all conflicts are inherently dirty and destructive. But this ongoing war has overstepped previous boundaries, crossed established red lines and is constantly teetering on the brink. It shows no signs of de-escalating, making it more dangerous than any previous conflict.

As these covert operations continue, the alleged Ukrainian attack appears to morph into sabotage operations against Russia. While hard evidence is scarce, the pattern of assassinations, drone strikes and targeted killings of Russian officers in various corners of the globe suggests a calculated effort to destabilise and unsettle Russian forces. These actions challenge the Kremlin’s ability to protect its interests while remaining engaged in Ukraine. Whether this covert war will escalate further or whether there are prospects for de-escalation remains uncertain, leaving the international community on edge as it closely monitors these unfolding events.

Ukraine lacks weapons to launch counteroffensive – Zelensky’s aide
Igor Zhovkva urges EU countries to do more to help Kiev in the fight against Moscow
Ukraine needs more weapons and ammunition to be able to carry out a successful counteroffensive against the Russian forces, the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky’s office has said.

In an interview with British newspaper The Times on Saturday, Igor Zhovkva was asked why the much-anticipated operation by Ukraine, aimed at retaking land lost to Russia, still hasn’t been launched.

“If you want to start a successful counteroffensive you need everything at your disposal, including artillery, armored vehicles and tanks, so probably we don’t have enough,” he replied.

“More weapons is the No 1 topic in each and every conversation” that Zelensky had during his numerous foreign trips over the past month, Zhovkva, who is also the Ukrainian president’s top foreign affairs adviser, stressed.

“Every country knows what kind of weapons we need from them, to protect our territory, stop the rockets,” the official added.

He also suggested that Russia has intensified its missile and drone campaign across Ukraine in recent months in a bid to deter the offensive by Kiev’s troops, which was expected to begin in spring.

The UK “now is one of the leading countries in showing real incentive and courage in how to really bring victory to my country,” he stated, adding that other nations need to do more to assist Kiev.

“Sorry, but the European countries are still too slow and not doing enough with sanctions” against Russia, Zhovkva insisted.

Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal on Saturday that the Ukrainian military was “ready” for the counteroffensive, but did not say when exactly it will start.

He also pointed out that Kiev would have wanted to see more weapons provided by the West, but that “we can’t wait for months” to launch the assault.

Among other things, Ukraine needs 50 US-made Patriot air defense batteries to sufficiently protect its cities and troops on the battlefield ahead of the counteroffensive, Zelensky said.

With the price of a single Patriot battery estimated at $1.1 billion, the overall cost of the demand would be around $55 billion, which is more than the total amount of American military aid allocated to Kiev since the start of the conflict.

The Ukrainian leader acknowledged that Russia’s air superiority would leave Kiev’s troops exposed and “a large number of soldiers will die” during the counteroffensive.

Moscow has repeatedly warned that deliveries of weapons, including sophisticated ones, to Ukraine by the US and its allies could cross “red lines,” leading to a major escalation in the hostilities. Russia argues that the provision of arms, intelligence sharing, and training to Kiev’s troops already means that Western nations are de facto parties to the conflict.

Seoul pushes back on Borrell’s claim about Ukraine weapons
The EU foreign policy chief highlighted the need for ammo shipments but did so unilaterally, South Korea’s defense ministry says
South Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-Sup never discussed ammunition shipments to Ukraine with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the ministry told journalists on Sunday.

It was referring to Borrell’s since-deleted tweet saying he had “a good meeting” with Lee on the sidelines of Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore. “Shared alarm at continued [North Korean] provocations and discussed Ukraine’s needs for ammunition,” he wrote at the time.

The South Korean Ministry of Defense contradicted this statement, however, claiming it was “not true” that Lee Jong-Sup and Borrell had a “discussion about ammunition support” for Kiev.

It went on to elaborate that the EU diplomat had “mentioned that various weapon systems and other support means are needed to improve Ukraine’s situation against Russia, but there was only a unilateral position that ammunition was important.”

Following the backlash from Seoul, Borrell’s tweet was deleted and replaced with another one, with the last phrase reading “I explained Ukraine’s needs for ammunition.”

Since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, South Korea has provided Kiev hundreds of millions of dollars in financial and humanitarian assistance, but has insisted on not sending lethal aid. However, in April, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol signaled that Seoul might change its stance on the matter should a “serious violation of the laws of war” in Ukraine take place.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a “confidential arrangement” with the US, that South Korea had agreed to supply Ukraine with hundreds of thousands of artillery shells. Commenting on the report, Seoul’s officials said it contained “inaccurate parts,” but would not elaborate further.

Russia has repeatedly condemned the West for sending weapons to Ukraine, claiming that it only prolongs the conflict. In late April, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned South Korea against following this path, noting that Moscow would interpret it as “an openly hostile anti-Russian move.”

Scholz branded ‘warmonger’ at rally held by his own party
The German Chancellor was booed and heckled over his Ukraine policy
German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, received an icy welcome at a ‘European Festival’ organized by his own Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Friday. Scholz was booed and whistled at as he sought to address a festival held in the town of Falkensee, in the German state of Brandenburg, near Berlin.

Footage published by the Ruptly video agency shows event attendees criticizing Scholz for being a "people’s traitor" and a "warmonger." Few supporters are seen cheering for the chancellor. A group was also heard shouting "liar" and "bandit" while demanding "peace without weapons" and urging Scholz to "go away."

According to the German tabloid Bild, some of the chancellor’s critics are associated with the country's right-wing scene and were wearing clothes bearing symbols of Russia and the anti-vaccination movement.

Scholz defended his government’s policies amid the chilly reception, insisting that Russian President Vladimir Putin was a "warmonger" for ordering the military operation in Ukraine. He also dismissed his critics as "loudmouths," adding that had they had "any sense in [their] brains" they would criticize the Russian leadership instead of him.

Indonesia unveils Ukraine peace plan
The multi-point initiative includes a ceasefire and a UN-monitored demilitarized zone
Indonesia’s defense minister presented a new peace initiative on Saturday aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Prabowo Subianto urged military officials from around the world to issue a declaration calling for a cessation of hostilities.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue defense meeting in Singapore, Prabowo shared his multi-point plan, which would include a ceasefire and the establishment of a demilitarized zone, with both Russia and Ukraine withdrawing 15km (nearly 10 miles) from their respective forward positions.

The defense minister emphasized that the demilitarized zone should be monitored by a United Nations peacekeeping force. Additionally, he suggested conducting a UN-sponsored referendum in the disputed territory to objectively determine the wishes of the majority of the inhabitants. He didn’t specify the regions to which he was referring.

“I propose that the Shangri-La Dialogue find a mode of... voluntary declaration urging both Ukraine and Russia to immediately start negotiations for peace,” Prabowo said.

During the same panel discussion, Josep Borrell, the high representative and vice president of the European Commission, acknowledged that ending military support for Ukraine would lead to a swift conclusion of the war. However, he cautioned against such a move, as it could result in the country’s sovereignty being compromised by external force.

“We need to bring peace to Ukraine,” but it must be a “just peace, not a peace of surrender,” Borrell said, commenting on the Indonesian proposal.

Indonesia’s peace initiative follows President Joko Widodo’s visit to Moscow and Kiev last year, during which he offered to mediate peace talks between the two leaders. President Widodo, who was chairing the G20 group of major economies at the time, expressed his willingness to act as a peace broker.

Despite voting in favor of a United Nations resolution denouncing Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, Indonesia has refrained from imposing economic sanctions on Moscow.

In February this year, China also put forward a 12-point peace plan for Ukraine. The document largely restated Beijing’s stated positions on the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, respect for territorial sovereignty of all nations, and the cessation of economic sanctions. The plan urged all parties involved to avoid any escalation involving nuclear weapons. Notably, however, it did not propose or suggest the withdrawal of Russian forces from the region.

Ukraine ‘ready’ to launch counteroffensive – Zelensky
The upcoming military operation will come at a tremendous cost, and many soldiers will die, the Ukrainian president has warned
Ukraine is ready to launch its long-awaited offensive, President Vladimir Zelensky told the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in an interview published on Saturday. He did not reveal the exact date, but said Kiev can no longer “wait for months.”

The operation is likely to inflict heavy losses on the Ukrainian troops, and might not go exactly as planned, Zelensky admitted, adding that Russia retaining air superiority would inevitably mean Kiev's forces will be exposed to enemy fire.

“I don’t know how long it will take,” Zelensky said, commenting on the operation’s potential timeframe. He added that “it can go a variety of ways, completely different.”

The president admitted that the military equipment and weapons supplied to Ukraine by its Western backers are still not enough. “We would like to have certain things, but we can’t wait for months,” he said.

Zelensky also highlighted the need for stronger air defences, and claimed that the US-made Patriot systems are virtually the only ones in the world capable of countering certain Russian missile types. He said Ukraine would need as many as 50 Patriot batteries to ensure sufficient air defenses. The lack of such protection means “a large number of soldiers will die,” during the offensive, he added.

In May, Kiev claimed that its forces had managed to intercept a Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missile, using a Patriot air defense system. Moscow denied the claim, and accused Ukraine of routinely exaggerating the effectiveness of its air defenses.

Ukraine has long been discussing a counteroffensive against Russia to reclaim territories that Kiev considers as its own. It has postponed the operation several times, citing a lack of ammunition, weapons, and even adverse weather conditions. Back in mid-May Zelensky claimed Kiev was ready to launch the offensive, while maintaining it needed more Western weapons.

Ukrainian troops have suffered massive casualties since the start of the conflict, according to various estimates. A Pentagon document leaked earlier this year and cited by The Washington Post said that between 124,000 and 131,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed or wounded since the start of the hostilities.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov has rejected this assessment, saying the number of his troops killed in the conflict was less than the death toll from the earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria in February. The combined estimated fatalities in the two countries amounted to more than 55,000. Reznikov later apologized for the comparison, deemed insensitive by some people in the affected areas.

In May, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said the Ukrainian armed forces had sustained over 15,000 battlefield casualties in April alone. And in April, Ukrainian Brigadier General Sergey Melnik, deputy commander of the Ukrainian force grouping stationed in the northeastern Kharkov Region, admitted to Spanish newspaper El Pais that Ukraine had already lost most of its experienced troops to deaths and injuries. “The problem is that we have a lack of people and equipment,” he said at the time, adding that Kiev had to rely on “people without military experience.”
