ロシアはスムイ近郊に5万人の兵力を集結させている。これはウクライナ軍の同地域への兵力の3倍に相当し、スムイからわずか20キロの距離にある。毎日300〜400人の兵士が失われているにもかかわらず、ロシアは予備兵力を投入し続けている。ウクライナ軍は砲火の中、塹壕を掘り、エリート部隊が防衛線維持のために展開している。
