溶連菌は正式には溶血性連鎖球菌の略ですが、そういう名前の細菌が主にのどに感染して、のどが痛くなったり、熱が出たり、場合によっては体や手足に発疹がでたり(猩紅熱といいます)します。 あまり咳や鼻水は出ません。 口の中が特徴的で、舌が苺のように赤く、ぼつぼつしてきます(はじめは白くなります)。
