US Records New High of +200,000 Coronavirus Cases in 1 Day as Crisis Shows No Sign of Easing

TEHRAN (FNA)- The United States on Tuesday far exceeded its previous daily record of new Covid-19 cases, adding almost 202,000 cases in 24 hours, according to the tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University, highlighting the urgent need for a vaccine after results from one medical trial fuelled optimism across the globe.

The United States on Tuesday registered a record 201,961 new COVID-19 cases in one day, as the country, the epicenter of the pandemic, has reported at least 10.25 million virus cases since the fatal virus emerged nearly one year ago.

The grim milestones came as for a week now, the number of new infections has trended at over 100,000 each day.

In the 24-hour period, 1,535 deaths from disease were registered, a record in recent months as the US struggles to contain the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

At least 239,670 patients have died with the deadly disease in the US.

Another 106,000 could lose their lives in the next two months, according to projections from the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The United States on Tuesday set a new record for coronavirus hospitalizations, with around 62,000 people currently in the hospital with the virus, according to the COVID Tracking Project, as the rising number of people in the hospital is putting a severe strain on capacity in certain areas of the country.

Several US states on Tuesday imposed restrictions to curb the spread of the coronavirus as people admitted to hospitals soared, straining the facilities and medical resources across much of the country.

Mayor Bill de Blasio warned Tuesday that new lockdown restrictions are back on the table in light of New York City's rising COVID-19 figures, which he called "very worrisome" and a "warning sign if I’ve ever seen one".

Pharma giant Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech announced on Monday that their vaccine candidate was 90 percent effective. Russian Health Ministry has also announced that more than 90 percent of those given the Russian-developed Sputnik V vaccine are thought to have developed immunity to coronavirus, matching estimates for an alternative US-developed formula.

Dr. Michael Osterholm, a newly appointed coronavirus advisor to US President-elect Joe Biden, warned that the pandemic in the US will face its darkest period so far over the next three to four months.

“Get ready. We’re going to be hitting 200,000 or more cases a day, and we have to get prepared in our hospitals,” he told MSNBC’s Morning Joe program on Monday.

Citing the success of contact tracing in China and elsewhere, Osterholm claimed the US had fallen short in its battle against the pandemic.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials have recently warned that the US approaches a “critical phase” of the coronavirus pandemic, while experts had warned all year the US sould likely see a surge in cases in the fall and winter as the cold weather forces people to spend more time indoors.

Many public health experts believe the toll would be much lower and the virus under control if the Donald Trump administration had taken a firmer grip on containing it fast early in 2020. It was also revealed earlier this month, according to a book by Bob Woodward, that Trump knew by at least early February that the coronavirus was “deadly” but wanted to “play it down”, arguing he did not want people to panic. Opinion polls show the American leader’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has hurt his re-election prospects.
