TEHRAN (FNA)- The terrorists of Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) have accused their ringleader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani of ordering the recent assassinations of the terrorist group’s senior commanders.

The wave of accusations came after it was exposed that al-Jolani had set up a special team to stop internal plots and international agreements against him.

The Center for Syria Documents reported that Al-Jolani has covertly formed a special security team comprising devoted security elements whose main mission is to thwart any plot or international agreements in Idlib against al-Jolani.

It noted that Jolani’s team was comprised of 2,500 devoted militants who cooperate with clandestine networks in Idlib secretly and without knowledge of Tahrir al-Sham and other affiliated terrorist groups.

Jolani’s security team has been accused of assassinating several commanders of Tahrir al-Sham, including Abu Omar Saraqi who was named as the most important choice to succeed al-Jolani and was assassinated in 2016.

In a relevant development on Wednesday, people in Idlib staged protest rallies against al-Jolani, calling for the withdrawal of terrorists from the occupied territories.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted local sources in Northern Syria as saying on Wednesday that residents of Ma'aret al-Numan, Saraqib, Kafar Takharim and Ariha in Idlib and the town of al-Artab in Western Aleppo demanded the militants to leave the region.

They underlined public fury over the continued presence of terrorists in Idlib after four days of truce in the province, saying that a number of terrorists have fled towards the Turkish borders after the popular protests.

Meantime, reports said that terrorists fired bullet at the protestors in the town of al-Artab in Western Aleppo, wounding a number of people.

In a relevant development on Monday, the Arabic-language media outlets reported that al-Jolani had collaborated with Washington in the recent air raids on affiliated terrorist groups in Idlib with the aim of defeating Turkey's efforts to dissolve Tahrir al-Sham in Northern Syria.

The al-Watan newspaper quoted sources affiliated to Tahrir al-Sham as saying that the recent US airstrikes against the terrorists' command centers between the towns of Kafraya and Ma'arat Misrin in Northern Idlib were carried out through the intel provided by al-Jolani to the US.

They added that he has given the Americans a list of the bases and weapons and equipment caches of Tahrir al-Sham and other affiliated groups, including Ansar al-Touhid and Horras al-Din which had under Turkey's pressure declared their defection from Tahrir al-Sham.

The sources said that Washington's military intervention in Idlib after the ceasefire was declared and after the Russian-Turkish meeting in Moscow is aimed at making ineffective Ankara's efforts under the Sochi agreement.

Tahrir Al-Sham Strengthens Positions in Deescalation Zone despite Ankara's Promise to Evacuate Terrorists
TEHRAN (FNA)- Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) terrorist group reinvigorated its positions in the demilitarized zone in spite of Turkey's agreement with Russia to force the militants to withdraw from the region.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted a field source as saying on Tuesday that the terrorist groups have not yet withdrawn from their positions in Damascus-Aleppo and Aleppo-Lattakia highways to be controlled by the Syrian army after four days of ceasefire declared by the army in Northern Syria.

Sources close to the National Liberation Front terrorist group revealed preparation of Tahrir al-Sham for a new battle against the Syrian army in Northern Hama and Southern Idlib, saying that the group is strengthening its positions in these areas.

Meantime, the Arabic-language Arabi al-Youm quoted field sources in Northern Syria as saying that the Syrian army has in the past few days sent a large number of forces and military equipment, including special forces, to its bases in the fronts near Manian, Dhahiyat al-Assa and 1070 project regions in Western Aleppo and stationed thousands of forces in Southern Idlib in front of al-Sarman region.

They added that in case of Turkey's inability to implement its undertakings to evacuate Tahrir al-Sham from the de-escalation zone, the Syrian army will start massive military operations with the aim of reopening the Aleppo-Damascus highway.

Undeclared US airstrike on Syria’s Idlib leaves multiple casualties, puts truce at risk – MoD
Sending no warning to Russia or Turkey, the US bombed an array of targets within Idlib, Syria, killing numerous civilians and threatening the hard-earned truce across the province, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The air raid led to “multiple casualties and destruction” around two villages in the Idlib province, where a fragile ceasefire between government forces and militants is still in place, the Russian Reconciliation Center said on Sunday. The airstrike, carried out on Saturday, “endangered the truce” and “violated all previous arrangements.”

Earlier, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it targeted leaders of a group it calls al-Qaeda in Syria. The strike “will further degrade their ability to conduct future attacks and destabilize the region,” it claimed.

But it hit shortly after Syrian government forces began a unilateral truce in the rebel-held province, Russia’s Defense Ministry noted. The Syrian Army is still sticking to the ceasefire despite militant attacks provoked by the US bombing.
Simultaneously, all combat sorties inside Syria were brought to a halt, the ministry said, rebuking US accusations about Russian “indiscriminate airstrikes” in Idlib.

Forces loyal to the government launched a major offensive on Idlib back in April and made significant advances last month. After days of fierce battles, they managed to liberate strategic locations, including Khan Sheikhoun, a town which had remained a rebel stronghold for years.

Still, a part of the province remains in the hands of a host of jihadist groups that continue to fight against the Damascus government. Hostilities between the Syrian army and the militants were mitigated through a joint diplomatic effort by Russia, Turkey and Iran to create a lasting peace in north-eastern Syria.

Syrian armed forces to cease fire in Idlib de-escalation zone on Saturday – Russian military
Syrian government forces will unilaterally cease fire in the de-escalation zone in the Idlib region on Saturday morning, the Russian Defense Ministry’s Center for reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria said on Friday.

To stabilize the situation in the area, an agreement was achieved on the Syrian military’s unilateral ceasefire starting at 6am, August 31, TASS reported, citing the center’s statement.

The ministry also urged armed militant groups in the region to join the ceasefire.

Separately, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was quoted as saying on Friday that the country’s armed forces will leave Syrian territory “if a political settlement” is found there.

Syria's war: US 'targets al-Qaeda leaders' in rebel-held Idlib
The US Central Command said the 'strike' targeted leaders that were 'responsible for attacks threatening US citizens.'
The United States military has said it carried out an attack against "al-Qaeda leaders" in north west Syria.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement on Saturday its attack in rebel-held Idlib province targeted leaders that were "responsible for attacks threatening US citizens, partners, and innocent civilians."

"The removal of the facility will further degrade [al-Qaeda's] ability to conduct future attacks and destabilize the region," the statement added, without mentioning what kind of weaponry was used.

A war monitor said "at least 40" fighters were killed in what it called a missile strike.

The attack "targeted a meeting held by the leaders of Hurras al-Deen, Ansar al-Tawhid and other allied groups inside a training camp," the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reporting from Hatay, near the Syrian-Turkish border, said that sources on the ground said the area targeted was "a training centre connected with al-Qaeda."

"[The training centre] encouraged people from all ages, young boys to teenage men, to older men to come there for training, that's why we've seen videos where at least there is clearly one injured child," Smith said.

"This is an indication of the concern, not just that Turkey has and the Russians have, but also that the Americans have that in this last rebel held part of Syria there are these hardcore groups resisting," he added.

On July 1 the US said it had carried out a strike on the al-Qaeda-linked Hurras al-Deen armed group in north west Syria, in its first such operation there in two years.

The group and its ally Ansar al-Tawhid both operate in the Idlib region and are members of a joint operation room that also includes al-Qaeda's former Syria affiliate, Hay'et Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Most of Idlib province and parts of neighbouring Aleppo and Latakia provinces are controlled by HTS.

Statement from U.S. Central Command on U.S. Forces strike against al-Qaida in Syria leadership in Idlib, Syria, Aug. 31, 2019.
U.S. Central Command TAMPA, Fla., Aug. 31, 2019 −
“U.S. Forces conducted a strike against al-Qaida in Syria (AQ-S) leadership at a facility north of Idlib, Syria, Aug. 31, 2019. This operation targeted AQ-S leaders responsible for attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians. Additionally, the removal of this facility will further degrade their ability to conduct future attacks and destabilize the region. Northwest Syria remains a safe haven where AQ-S leaders actively coordinate terrorist activities throughout the region and in the West. With our allies and partners, we will continue to target violent extremists to prevent them from using Syria as a safe haven.”
– Lt. Col. Earl Brown, CENTCOM Chief of Media Operations.

Ceasefire

Separately, Syrian government air raids on the Idlib region halted early on Saturday, after the government agreed to a Moscow-backed ceasefire following four months of deadly bombardment.

Russia-backed government forces have been pressing an offensive against the major opposition stronghold in Idlib since late April.

Syrian state news agency SANA on Saturday said the government agreed to the Idlib ceasefire deal, which Russia said aimed "to stabilise the situation" in the anti-government bastion.

But the army "reserves the right to respond to violations" by rebel groups, SANA added, citing a Syrian military source.

The Idlib region is home to some three million people, nearly half of whom have been displaced from other parts of Syria.

The United Nations says the violence has also displaced more than 400,000 people.

The region is supposed to be protected from a massive government offensive by a Turkish-Russian deal struck in September 2018 that was never fully implemented.

Turkey backs various rebel groups in north west Syria.

"Russia and the Syrian government may be willing to give Turkey another opportunity to implement the terms of its September 2018 bilateral agreement with Russia," said Sam Heller of the International Crisis Group.

"Alternately, this ceasefire may just be an operational pause for Damascus and Moscow to consolidate their territorial gains and prepare for the next phase of their offensive," he told AFP news agency.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose forces control around 60 percent of territory, has vowed to reclaim the rest of the country, including Idlib.

Saturday's truce is the latest attempt to avert a full-blown offensive, which the UN has said would result in one of the worst humanitarian "nightmares" in Syria's eight-year conflict.

The Syrian conflict has killed more than 370,000 people and driven millions from their homes since it started with the brutal repression of anti-government protests in 2011.

Al-Jolani Collaborating with Washington to Prevent Dissolution of Tahrir Al-Sham
TEHRAN (FNA)- Ringleader of Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has collaborated with Washington in the recent air raids on affiliated terrorist groups in Idlib with the aim of defeating Turkey's efforts to dissolve Tahrir al-Sham in Northern Syria.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted sources affiliated to Tahrir al-Sham as saying on Monday that the recent US airstrikes against the terrorists' command centers between the towns of Kafraya and Ma'arat Misrin in Northern Idlib were carried out through the intel provided by al-Jolani to the US.

Relevant reports said on Sunday that Ankara had promised Moscow to dissolve Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at terrorist group in Northern Syria to return to the earlier-agreed Sochi agreement.

al-Watan newspaper quoted sources close to the National Liberation Front and Tahrir al-Sham as saying that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has in a recent meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin vowed to dissolve Tahrir al-Sham and other affiliated terrorist groups, including Horras al-Din and Ansar al-Touhid, within 8 days.

They said that the ceasefire declared by the Syrian army on Saturday was also in line with the agreement, adding that one of the conditions demanded by Syria was its army's control over a vast area of Hama-Idlib international road.

The sources underlined possible opposition of Tahrir al-Sham to Turkey's agreement with Russia, saying that based on the agreement, in case of Ankara's inability to implement its promises, the Russian and Syrian armies will resume their military operations towards the towns of Ma'arat al-No'eman and Saraqib on Hama-Idlib international road.

The Syrian Army on Saturday agreed to ceasefire in the demilitarized zone of Idlib after making massive advances in the Southern part of the province.

The Arabic-language SANA news agency quoted a battlefield source as saying that the Syrian Army has declared implementation of truce in the demilitarized zone while reiterating that it will respond to any violation of ceasefire by the terrorists.

After taking full control of al-Tamane’ah strategic town, the Syrian Army continued its advances in Southern Idlib and regained control of the towns of al-Khovein al-Kabir, al-Sakiat, Eastern and Western Farms of al-Tamane’ah, Tal Turki, Tal Sayyed Jafar and strategic Sayyed Ali Hilltop just one kilometer to the North of al-Tamane’ah that overlooks al-Azizieh-Tahtaya Road.

The battlefield sources also reported that the Syrian Army troops killed at least 37 Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at, Haras al-Din and Turkistani terrorists and destroyed several of their military vehicles and equipment.
