Iraqi PM Abadi tells Time magazine: If Syrian Kurds try to change the map, others may want to ‘change their maps as well. This area was divided in the last 100 years, just by pen on the map... If you want to change them, there will be bloodshed in all the region.’

Turkish FM: Ankara Considers Joint Op with Baghdad Against Iraqi Kurds
TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara and Baghdad may carry out a joint military operation against Iraqi Kurds after the May election in Iraq.

Speaking to CNN Turk, Cavusoglu also added that Ankara’s own operation against Syrian Kurdish militias in the Afrin region would be completed by May.

Kurdish militias in Iraq and Syria were allied with the US-led coalition, which rallied them for operations targeting the terrorist group, ISIL. In Syria, the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces, which are dominated by Kurdish YPG militias, were the primary ground force in the siege of the ISIL stronghold of Raqqa.

Ankara considers those militias an extension of its domestic Kurdish militant organization, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is deemed to be a terrorist group by the Turkish government. Kurds in Syria and Iraq have been attacked by Turkish forces on several occasions in recent years, including the ongoing cross-border operation in Afrin.

The autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan has proved troublesome for Baghdad. Last year, the Iraqi government used a combination of military force and political maneuvering to undermine the results of an independence referendum, in which the region voted for secession from the rest of Iraq.

Local Units Formed in Raqqa to Drive Out US-Backed Kurds
TEHRAN (FNA)- The tribal Arab forces in Raqqa province have formed a number of units to fight against the Kurds who have occupied the city and are supported by Washington.

The forces formed under the title of the Popular Resistance of Raqqa (PRoR) are now recruiting forces to start fights against Kurdish militias.

A large number of civilians who were killed during the operations by the Kurds and the US-led anti-ISIL coalition in Raqqa were members of these tribes.

The Kurdish forces have also been busy with forced recruitment among the civilians after occupation of Raqqa.

A large number of people in the city of Raqqa took to the streets late February in opposition to the US troops' buildup in their city, accusing the US military forces and their allied militants of destroying their city and also executing large groups of civilians.

The protestors vowed not to cooperate with the US troops, and warned that they will continue to show their disagreement with the US forces' occupation and disintegration of Syria in demonstrations and strikes.

The Russian Defense Ministry said early March that the only areas in Syria where the requirements of UN Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2401 are completely ignored and there is no help for the population remains the destroyed city of Raqqa, as well as the Al-Rukban refugee camp in the US-controlled area of al-Tanf.

Syrian permanent representative to the United Nations Bashar al-Jaafari told the UN Security Council mid-February that the US-led Coalition to defeat the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group has intentionally destroyed 90 percent of Syria’s town of Raqqa.

Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya had also stressed mid-January the humanitarian situation in Syria’s Raqqa was close to a disaster, though everyone was putting the best face on matters.

A stronghold of the ISIL terrorist group, Raqqa was liberated in mid October by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Over 2,900 Kurdish Fighters Killed, Captured in Turkish Army Operation in Northern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- More than 2,900 Kurdish gunmen have been killed or held captive by the Turkish troops in Afrin region in Northwestern Aleppo since January, the General Staff of the Turkish Army reported on Wednesday.
The army said that a sum of 2,940 Kurdish fighters have been killed or captured by the Turkish troops and allied militants within the framework of Operation Olive Branch in Afrin region.
Turkey’s Operation ‘Olive Branch’ kicked off on January 20 from air and ground in Afrin in Syria's Aleppo to oust the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has stressed that Turkish offensive in Afrin is part of Ankara's strategy based on supporting terrorists.
The Syrian government has condemned the “brutal Turkish aggression” against the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin, rejecting Ankara’s claim about having informed Damascus of the operation.
The General Staff reported on Tuesday that a sum of 2,872 Kurdish gunmen were killed or captured by the Turkish troops in Afrin region started on January 20.
The general staff further said that fierce clashes were underway between the two warring sides in Northern Syria.
Meantime, the Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and government Spokesman Bekir Bozdag said almost half of the area that Operation Olive Branch aims to secure in Syria’s Afrin came under the Turkish military's control.

Kurdish Militias Come Under Siege in Northern Syrian Town
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Turkish Army troops and Ankara-backed militants managed to lay siege on the town of Jandaris in Northwestern Aleppo from three different directions after forcing the Kurdish fighters back from several positions on Saturday.

The Turkish soldiers and allied militant stormed Kurdish fighter's positions in Jandaris region South of Afrin and captured the small towns of Hajlar and Abu Ka'ab.

Local sources said that Jandaris has come under siege by the Operation Olive Branch forces from three flanks, adding that the Turkish troops are almost 22 km away from the Center of the town of Afrin.

Other sources reported that the Turkish army and allied militants occupied Kurdish fighters' base near the small town of Arouba in Sheran region.

Earlier today, the Turkish Army General Staff said in a statement that over 1,930 Kurdish gunmen have thus far been killed or held capture in the Turkish army troops' operation in Afrin region.

The army's statement reported that a sum of 1,931 Kurdish militants have been killed or captured by the Turkish army men or Ankara-backed militants within the framework of Operation Olive Branch in Afrin region in Northwestern Aleppo that started on January 20.

Meantime, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) claimed earlier today that a sum of 1,219 Turkish soldiers and allied militants have thus far been killed in the last 5 weeks of Ankara's assault on the Kurds in Afrin region in Northwestern Aleppo.

The SDF reported on its official Facebook page on Friday that 1,219 Turkish army men and their allied militants were killed in Operation Olive Branch that started on January 20, in Afrin region.

The SDF further said that 66 military vehicles of the Turkish army have also been destroyed by the Kurds in the region.

Kurdish Fighters Surrender Tal Raifat to Syrian Army
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army troops entered the town of Tal Raifat in Northern Aleppo after the Kurdish militants agreed to cede control of the Northern town to the government troops.

The Arabic-language website of Russia's state news agency, Sputnik, reported that the Kurdish fighters handed over Tal Rifat to the army men after a relevant agreement on Friday.

The Kurds have delivered several regions to the army men in the recent days.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel reported on Thursday that the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) delivered control of the Eastern districts of Aleppo, including Sheikh Maqsoud, al-Halak and Bustan Pasha, after coordination with the Syrian army.

Also, some Syrian sources reported that the Syrian army units have entered Sheikh Khazar, al-Ashrafiyeh and al-Heidariyeh neighborhoods.

They added that the Syrian flag was hoisted above those neighborhoods, adding that delivering control of the East Aleppo districts to the army was in line with implementing the agreement between the Kurds and the Syrian government on Afrin.

The Syrian and Kurdish officials did not confirm the reports.

The development came after a YPG spokesman underlined that the Syrian army forces were called to Afrin to end the Turkish army occupation and aggression.

"Deployment of a part of the Syrian army forces in Afrin is aimed at confronting the Turkish government attacks," Nouri Mahmoud was quoted as saying by the Kurdish media on Wednesday.

He stressed that the world admitted the Syrian army's high capabilities, and said, "They are responsible for protecting the Syrian territories and therefore, their presence is aimed at defending Syria's territorial integrity."

Mahmoud confirmed that a number of Syrian army forces were deployed in Afrin on Tuesday at the Kurds' demand.

Meantime, pro-Damascus popular forces entered the Kurdish-held town of Afrin, as Ankara said its forces have prevented the popular forces from entering Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo.

Al-Mayadeen TV reported that the Damascus-affiliated popular force have entered the town of Afrin via the Ziyareh passageway after leaving the towns of Nubl and al-Zahra.

It went on to say that the Turkish army's artillery units and Air Force pounded the movements and positions of the popular forces in Kafin region to prevent them from entering Afrin, adding that the popular forces launched retaliatory attack on the Turkish troops and destroyed one of their drones.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously announced that Ankara force would prevent the pro-Damascus popular forces from entering Afrin.

Erdogan: Syria’s Afrin city center ‘entirely under control,’ Kurds ‘fled’
The Turkish military and allied forces have taken full control of the Syrian city of Afrin, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Sunday. Kurdish YPG forces had previously maintained control of the area.

The pro-Turkish forces entered the city before dawn and faced no resistance from Kurdish fighters, who had already withdrawn, according to reports. Erdogan said in a televised speech this morning that all measures would be taken to protect Afrin’s residents. He praised the "heroic" actions of the armies, Turkey's NTV reports.

Erdogan said that Turkey and its allies have not invaded Afrin, but rather “saved” the city from the “oppression” of terrorists. “This operation has shown the whole world that Turkey sides with the oppressed,” he said, as cited by Rudaw.

The Turkish Army released a number of videos and photos reportedly from inside Afrin. The footage shows tanks rolling down the street, as soldiers wave Turkish and FSA flags.

Erdogan said that Turkey and its allies have not invaded Afrin, but rather “saved” the city from the “oppression” of terrorists. “This operation has shown the whole world that Turkey sides with the oppressed,” he added.

During his announcement, Erdogan made reference to past Ottoman military triumphs, comparing the Afrin operation to the Turkish defense of Gallipoli during World War I. “We are fighting the same way we did in Canakkale," he said, using the Turkish name for the historic battle. "They thought that Turkey is not as strong as it was in Canakkale." Coincidentally, March 18 marks the start of the ill-fated Allied assault on the Dardanelles in 1915.

Kurdish officials deny that they have abandoned Afrin, however. Hediye Yusuf, a founding member of the self-declared Democratic Federal System of Northern Syria, said that Kurdish fighters left the city as part of an effort to safely evacuate civilians from what he termed a "massacre" by pro-Turkish forces. According to Rudaw, Mustafa Bali, a former spokesperson for the SDF, said that "the resistance in Afrin is entering a new phase and will continue."

Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli praised Turkey’s “hero” army. Writing on Twitter, Canikli said that Turkish forces in Syria guarantee “peace, security and peace” for Turkey and the region.

‘We can suddenly come’: Turkey’s Erdogan puts all Kurdish-held towns in Syria & Iraq on notice
Turkey’s military operation in Syria will target other Kurdish-held towns – and may even spill over into Iraq – President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced just a day after pro-Turkish forces seized Afrin.

The controversial cross-border offensive “will go on until the terror corridor through Manbij, Ayn al-Arab, Tell Abyad, Ras al-Ayn, Qamishli has been wiped out,” Erdogan said, speaking in the presidential complex in Ankara on Monday.

Erdogan hinted that the Turkish military operation may even expand into neighboring Iraq, if needed, in an effort to “eliminate” forces loyal to the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which Ankara has designated as a terrorist organization.

“We can suddenly come over one night in Iraq's Sinjar and eliminate PKK terrorists there,” Erdogan said, according to Turkish state media.

On January 20, Turkey launched a cross-border offensive into Syria with an aim to dislodge Kurdish “terrorists” from Afrin. The assault, codenamed Operation Olive Branch, has strained relations between Ankara and Washington. The Kurdish YPG are key US allies in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists, but Ankara views them as an offshoot of the terrorist-designated Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The Turkish leader’s announcement comes just one day after the Turkish military, aided by its Free Syrian Army (FSA) allies, seized the Syrian city of Afrin. Erdogan said that capturing Afrin was a “comma” and “God willing, a full stop will come next.” However, he stressed that Turkey was not invading Syria.

“Our intention is not to invade, but to carry out operations to cleanse terrorists and eliminate terrorist threats to our country,” he said, as cited by Rudaw.

Thousands have reportedly fled their homes in the Afrin region in the wake of Turkey’s offensive. After announcing the city’s capture, Erdogan vowed to protect Afrin’s residents. However, Kurdish leaders have accused the Turkish military and its proxies of committing “massacres” and “ethnic cleansing.”
