Erdogan: Turkey’s Syria op will move to Idlib after mission completed in Afrin
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has promised to take Ankara’s Syria operation to Idlib after completing the current mission in Afrin, where they are targeting Kurdish militants.

"We want our Syrian brothers and sisters to return to their land, and now we want to do the same in Idlib what we have done in Afrin,” Erdogan said.

It’s not the first time the Turkish leader has stated that the campaign against Kurdish militia in Syria could actually spread beyond Afrin.

“Our heroic soldiers…are making history today in Afrin. And they will make history tomorrow wherever there are terrorists along our borders,” the Turkish President said late last month.

On January 20, the Turkish General Staff officially declared the start of the military campaign in Syria's northwestern Afrin region, calling it ‘Operation Olive Branch’. Ankara launched airstrikes against Kurdish positions, with Turkish troops advancing into the Kurd-held territories. The Turkish armed forces are supported by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) – an Ankara-backed paramilitary opposition group which consists mainly of Syrian Arab and Syrian Turkmen groups, which hold the territories in Afrin.

The Turkish General Staff said last week that as many as 899 fighters of the Syrian Kurdish militias – which they said included the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants and Islamic State (IS, former ISIS) terrorists – were “neutralized” since the launch of Operation Olive Branch.

Formed as an armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, the YPG rapidly expanded during the Syrian civil war. The group also fought against IS and received backing from the US-led coalition, which supplied them with weapons.

In a telephone conversation earlier on Thursday, Erdogan spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the situation in Syria. They agreed to hold another three-way summit on Syria with Russia, Turkey and Iran; a source in Erdogan’s administration said. The event is expected to take place in Istanbul.

Erdogan and Putin have also discussed the need to expedite the establishment of observation posts in the de-escalation zone of Idlib governorate, Turkish media report.

In early October, Turkish military forces were deployed to Idlib province to monitor one of four de-escalations zones located there. The proposal to establish the zones, championed by Russia, was finalized in September at a round of Syrian peace talks in Astana.

The first three-way summit between the leaders of Russia, Turkey and Iran, which was aimed at ending the bloodshed in Syria, took place in the southern Russian resort of Sochi in November.

Iranian, Russian, Turkish Presidents to Hold Trilateral Meeting in Istanbul
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents are due to convene in Istanbul to discuss the latest regional developments, specially in Syria.

The Turkish and Russian leaders agreed Thursday to hold a trilateral meeting with Iran on Syria, in Istanbul, Anadolu news agency quoted a presidential source as saying without declaring an exact date for the trilateral meeting.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin discussed Syria, particularly Afrin and Idlib, during their phone conversation, said the source who called for anonymity.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had in a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin reiterated his country's opposition to the presence of foreign forces in Syria.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran is opposed to the presence of foreign forces on Syrian territories without the permission of the country's government and nation," President Rouhani said.

Tensions between Turkey, US Enter New Stage
TEHRAN (FNA)- Sources reported arrival of a delegation of senior American Generals in Manbij military base to increase support for the Kurdish forces while Turkey has underlined the necessity for immediate withdrawal of the US forces from the region.

News websites affiliated to the terrorists confirmed that a helicopter carrying high-ranking US Generals, including General Paul E. Funk, the commander of the third armored division, Colonel Ryan Dillon, the spokesman of the US-led coalition, and General James Jarrard, has landed in the US base in West of Manbij in Northeastern Aleppo.

They added that the visit is aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Kurdish forces as their main ally in the region.

General Funk has stressed that the US forces will remain in Manbij despite Turkey's repeated demands for their withdrawal.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused US President Donald Trump and his predecessor Barrack Obama of not fulfilling the promise they'd made to Ankara to compel the Kurdish fighters from Manbij in Syria's Aleppo province.

"Obama deceived Turkey on the issue of the Syrian Kurdish militants in Manbij, and Trump follows the same path. Trump told us that they cannot stay there and head East from the Euphrates. He acknowledged that the Arabs are the real rulers of Manbij. But what he promised was not fulfilled," Erdogan told Turkish journalists, returning to Turkey after an official visit to the Vatican and Italy, according to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

He warned the US once again to withdraw from the Syrian city of Manbij, saying that Turkish forces aim to return the city “to its true owners”.

Speaking at a meeting of his ruling AK Party in parliament on Tuesday, Erdogan said that countless terrorists had been “rendered inactive” by the recent Turkish offensive in Afrin.

Vowing that the operation would continue, he mocked Washington's criticisms, saying “When are you going to finish with us asking the question, when did you finish your operations in Afghanistan? When did you finish your operations in Iraq? It's been 18 years."

He described the American military presence in Syria as opportunistic, saying that Washington had “calculations against Turkey, Iran and maybe Russia” now that ISIL has been largely defeated.

Erdogan also vowed that Turkey would develop its defense sector and reduce reliance on foreign-made defense systems.

Russia: Situation in Syria's Afrin Provoked by US Actions
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov said the situation in Syria's Afrin has been provoked by the actions of the United States among other things and may lead to further destabilization of the region.

“Ankara assured us that the efforts made by the Turkish troops do not contradict the work that Turkey is conducting and will continue to conduct in the area of political settlement in Syria… At the same time, the developments of the situation in Afrin, provoked by the actions of the United States among other things, can lead to even greater destabilization in this region,” Syromolotov told Sputnik in an interview.

The diplomat noted that Afrin had become another hotbed of tension, adding that Ankara and Washington had opposing interests in the region.

“The interests of the United States and Turkey in the region are increasingly diverging. In fact, the NATO allies have already wound up on opposite sides,” Syromolotov said.

Turkey’s Operation ‘Olive Branch’ kicked off mid-January from air and ground around the area of Afrin in Syria's Aleppo to oust the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has stressed that Turkish offensive in Afrin is part of Ankara's strategy based on supporting terrorists.

The Syrian government has condemned the “brutal Turkish aggression” against the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin, rejecting Ankara’s claim about having informed Damascus of the operation.
