US troops may become targets after US Jerusalem decision - Iraqi paramilitary group
The US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital may become a “legitimate reason” to attack American troops in Iraq, Shia paramilitary group Harakat Hezbollah al Nujaba said.
“Trump's stupid decision... will be the big spark for removing this entity [Israel] from the body of the Islamic nation, and a legitimate reason to target American forces,” said Akram al-Kaabi, the Iraqi organization’s leader, as cited by Reuters.
The US, which is leading a large-scale operation against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Iraq, has about 5,200 troops in the country, according to the latest statement from the US Defense Department.
Nujaba, mostly made up of Iraqis, has about 10,000 fighters, according to Reuters data. Being a part of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), the group is considered to be one of the most important militias in Iraq.
In November, Ted Poe from the US House of Representatives proposed imposing “terrorism-related sanctions” on Nujaba. The text of the document says Nujaba is “an affiliated faction” of the US-designated foreign terrorist organization Kata’ib Hezbollah, which also fights with the PMF.
Nujaba’s leader Akram al-Kaabi was earlier designated by the Department of the Treasury “for threatening the peace and stability of Iraq.” The bill claims Kaabi took part in “multiple mortar and rocket attacks” on the Green Zone in Baghdad in 2008.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump officially announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, where he plans to relocate the US Embassy. The president admitted the move will cause dissent, but says it could help resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict.
A number of world powers, including Germany, Turkey, and Russia, expressed grave concern over the Trump administration’s decision.
On Thursday, the Iraqi government demanded the US reverse its decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. “We caution against the dangerous repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world,” a government statement reads. “The US administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any dangerous escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favorable to terrorism.”

Anti-US protests erupted almost immediately after Donald Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital – with greater demonstrations expected across the Muslim world, united in their support of the Palestinian cause.

Palestinians were first to take to the streets following Trump’s Jerusalem decision – a potentially fatal blow to their future statehood ambitions – as their leaders called for three days of rage against the controversial move.

Hundreds of enraged youths burned tires and American flags in spontaneous protests on Wednesday across the Gaza Strip.

In the evening, protesters waving Palestinian flags heard Hamas leader, Ismail Radwan, declare that Trump’s decision will “open the gates of hell.” Chanting “death to America” and “death to Israel,” as well as “down with Trump,” they condemned Washington’s new policy.

This decision will have no effect on the Palestinian people but will escalate the Intifada in Jerusalem, and I expect too much of an escalation,” one of the Palestinian protesters told Ruptly.

Mass demonstrations also broke out in the West Bank, where residents of Qalqilya burned images of Trump.

Meanwhile in Turkey, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to cut diplomatic ties with Israel, thousands of protesters held rallies across the nation.

Several hundred activists gathered outside the US Consulate in Istanbul shouting anti-Trump slogans as they hurled objects at the American diplomatic mission. Led by the Anatolian Youth Association (AGD), the crowd displayed posters and banners supporting the Palestinian cause.

Anti-American protests also took place at the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul. The rally organized by Turkish Youth Foundation (TUGVA) called on Muslims worldwide to unite against the American decision, which they say signals the death knell for the Middle East peace process.

Protesters also flocked to the US Embassy in Ankara, where they stated that the Palestinian cause is a basic issue for all Muslims. Similar protests took place in Konya, Bursa, Antalya, Mugla, Manisa, Adana, Bartin, Karabuk, Samsun, Yozgat, Malatya, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaras, Sanliurfa, Sirnak and Diyarbakir provinces, Anadolu news agency reports.

“Down with America... America is the mother of terror,” shouted protesters who gathered Wednesday in the Jordanian capital, Amman to protest against the US. Jordan, which has a substantial Palestinian refugee population, condemned the move with solidarity marches taking place at the Palestinian camps of Al-Wahdat, Baqaa and Hitin, as well as in the city of Maan in southern Jordan.
