China will prevent US first strike against North Korean regime – govt daily
China will prevent the US and South Korea from carrying out strikes on North Korea and trying to overthrow the leadership there, but will remain neutral if Pyongyang launches missiles at American targets first, the state-run Global Times said.

Beijing should make it clear that “if North Korea launches missiles that threaten US soil first and the US retaliates, China will stay neutral,” the Global Times wrote.

But if the US and its ally South Korea take on Pyongyang and try to “overthrow the North Korean regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so,” the paper stressed.

The widely-quoted newspaper, published by the Communist Party’s official People’s Daily, also noted that the latest developments are seen in Beijing with growing frustration and deep concern.

“If war really breaks out, the US can hardly reap any strategic harvest and North Korea will face unprecedented risks,” the paper cautioned. “North Korea aims to propel the US to negotiate with it, while the US wants to put North Korea in check.”

Beijing was unable “to persuade Washington or Pyongyang to back down at this time,” the Global Times said, adding it primarily pursues peace and stability in the region. All sides involved in the crisis should understand that “when their actions jeopardize China's interests, China will respond with a firm hand,” the government paper explained.
The warning, delivered through an editorial in the Chinese state-run newspaper on Thursday, comes as both the US and North Korea continue to exchange incendiary remarks, raising the risk of overreaction or miscalculation amid the crisis.

Russia Boosts Air Defense in Far East amid Escalating N. Korea Nuclear Situation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russia’s air defense systems in the country's Far East region have been enhanced and put on a state of high alert in connection with the escalated situation around North Korea’s recent missile tests, Russia's upper house of parliament lawmaker Viktor Ozerov announced on Friday.

"What is happening now around North Korea cannot but cause our sense of concern and understanding of the need for additional measures to protect our territory. Air defense and aerospace forces were reinforced in the Far East region," Ozerov, former chairman of the defense and security committee of Russia's upper house of parliament, told Sputnik.

According to the lawmaker, air defense systems in the Russian Far East are in a state of high alert.

"We are monitoring everything that is happening around North Korea. The zones of the possible launches (of North Korean missiles) were given increased attention," the lawmaker added.

North Korea’s military said Wednesday it was considering a missile attack near the US island territory of Guam after President Donald Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury." Guam hosts several US military bases.

Nuclear war with N. Korea not ‘imminent’ – CIA chief
There’s no “imminent” threat of a nuclear war between the US and North Korea, according to CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who explained that Donald Trump’s threats against Pyongyang describe only a possible response for “certain actions.”

“There’s nothing imminent today,” Pompeo told Fox News on Sunday.

“But make no mistake about it, the continuation, the increased chance that there will be a nuclear missile in Denver is a very serious threat and the investigation is going to treat it as such.”

“What I’m talking about is I’ve heard folks talking about being on the cusp of a nuclear war,” he added. “No intelligence that would indicate that we’re in that place today.”

Rather than an escalation to a nuclear war, Pompeo argued that Trump’s heated rhetoric towards Pyongyang was to send a message that its continued pursuit of a nuclear arsenal and ballistic missile technology would not be tolerated.

“The president has made it very clear to the North Korean regime how America will respond if certain actions are taken,” Pompeo said.

“We are hopeful that the leader of that country will understand them in precisely the way they are intended, to permit him a place to get where we can get the nuclear weapons off the peninsula.”

“It’s that straightforward,” Pompeo said. “What we need from an intelligence perspective, what is most important is that our communications are clear that the fella who intends to inflict pain on the United States of America understands the US position in an unambiguous way. That’s the best message you can deliver to someone who’s putting America at risk.”

However, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that both sides were inching dangerously close to a confrontation.

“How close have we come to this situation? Yes, we’ve come very close to a possible armed conflict,” she said in an interview with the TV channel Russia-1.

“If there really is an armed force scenario and if everything indeed happens the way the Washington establishment is trying to scare us all with, the situation will be simply catastrophic,” she added, before noting that that “the whole world tried to prevent the sprawl of the disaster” of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan, back in 2011.

Zakharova said that the United States was not considering the full repercussions of an armed conflict in the region.

“The representatives of the establishment, the senators, they try to say to the public that they will not even have to worry about it, because people will die not in the US, but in other countries, though not just in North Korea,” she explained. “I think they are thinking of South Korea as well.”
