Pope Francis makes racially charged comment against Russians
Moscow slammed the pontiff’s description of Chechens and Buryats as a “perversion”
Chechens, Buryats and others who are “of Russia but are not of the Russian tradition” are acting with “cruelty” in Ukraine, the head of the Roman Catholic Church told the Jesuit magazine America in an interview published on Monday. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said such words go beyond mere Russophobia.

Ukraine’s people are being “martyred,” Pope Francis said in the interview, conducted last week at the Vatican. “Generally, the cruelest are perhaps those who are of Russia but are not of the Russian tradition, such as the Chechens, the Buryati [sic] and so on. Certainly, the one who invades is the Russian state. This is very clear.”

Speaking at a roundtable in the Russian Senate on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the comments made by Pope Francis beyond the pale.

“This is no longer Russophobia, it’s a perversion on a level I can’t even name,” she said.

Later, on Telegram, Zakharova pointed out that until recently the Western media claimed that Slavs were “tormenting the people of the Caucasus,” referring to the conflict between Russia and the Chechen separatists, and now they say it’s the other way around.
“We are one family with Buryats, Chechens and other representatives of our multinational and multi-faith country,” Zakharova added. “And together we will definitely pray for the Holy See, each in their own way – wishing them delivery from temptation.”

The Muslim Chechens live in the Caucasus Mountains, while the Buddhist Buryats are native to southeastern Siberia. Propaganda coming from the government in Kiev has painted the Ukrainians as “true Slavs” who are being menaced by the “Asiatic Russian horde.”

To hear the pontiff accuse of “cruelty” the Chechens and Buryats protecting the Donbass civilians is “strange, to say the least,” the head of Buryatia Alexey Tsidenov said about the interview on Monday.

“History knows many examples of those who considered themselves representatives of civilized nations destroying cities, countries and entire peoples,” added Tsidenov, pointing to the Crusades – declared by the popes of Rome – as one example.

“If such people have taken note of our fighters, that means they are doing their job well. We’re proud of you, boys. God is with those defending justice!” he said.

Vatican apologizes for Pope’s remarks – Moscow
The pontiff claimed last month that two ethnic groups living in Russia were particularly disposed to battlefield cruelty
The Vatican has issued a formal apology to Russia for derogatory remarks made by Pope Francis last month about some ethnic groups in the country, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

The ministry received the message on Thursday from Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. It expressed the Holy See’s respect for “all peoples of Russia, their dignity, faith and culture, just like all other nations and peoples of the world,” Zakharova told a press briefing.

“The capacity to recognize one’s mistakes is becoming more rare in international relations today. This situation shows that, behind the Vatican’s calls for dialogue, there is a knack for having such a dialogue and hearing the other side,” the Russian diplomat noted. She added that Moscow considered the incident to be over.

Pope Francis made a negative generalized assessment of the character of Buryats and Chechens, two of the many ethnic groups living in Russia, in an interview published in late November. He described them as “of Russia but… not of the Russian tradition” and claimed that such people were “the cruelest” of the Russian troops in Ukraine.

Moscow responded by issuing a formal note of protest to the Vatican, while many Russian officials, including Zakharova, expressed outrage about the remarks.

“This is no longer Russophobia, it’s a perversion on a level I can’t even name,” the spokeswoman said at the time.

The Vatican and Pope Francis personally offered mediation in the conflict in Ukraine. The pontiff previously angered Kiev by publicly recognizing that NATO’s expansion in Europe was a contributing factor in the conflict, which is part of Moscow’s position on the origin of the violent standoff with Kiev and its foreign backers.

ショルツ氏、自らの失敗の「言い訳」を提示 - モスクワ

Scholz offers ‘excuses’ for his own failures – Moscow
The Russian Foreign Ministry has reminded the German Chancellor of his predecessor’s recent Ukraine revelations
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is trying to find excuses for his own failures, the Russian Foreign Ministry has suggested on Wednesday. Moscow was responding to the speech Scholz delivered earlier this week, criticizing Russia’s foreign policy and speculating about the country’s future after the end of the conflict in Ukraine.

At a meeting of the Eastern Committee for German Business (OA), a trade association focused on relations with Eastern Europe, Scholz claimed the Russian government would need “a chance to restart economic cooperation, in another time when this is possible,” once Moscow is defeated in Ukraine. The chancellor accused President Vladimir Putin of trying to recreate a Russian empire, adding that Moscow must not win and “will not win, either,” in Ukraine.

Commenting on the chancellor’s remarks, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow will never “ask” Berlin for anything, adding that German politicians “must understand this once and for all.”

Scholz effectively tried to excuse “the German government and himself for the Russian direction policy failures and the growing economic problems in the country,” the statement claimed. “Let Olaf Scholz himself be responsible for business ‘belt-tightening’ to the detriment of its own interests.”

The German chancellor “did not say a word about the admission of his predecessor, Angela Merkel, that Berlin and other Western capitals have always seen the Minsk peace agreements solely as an opportunity to get time to ready Kiev for a war against our country,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The admission that the statement referred to was made by Merkel last week, when she told Die Zeit newspaper that the September 2014 Minsk agreement brokered by France and Germany, which envisioned a roadmap out of the conflict in Ukraine’s east, was actually “an attempt to give Ukraine time.”

Merkel’s words echoed statements made earlier this year by former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, who also acknowledged that Minsk was a ruse to buy time for a military build-up.

Russia sent troops into Ukraine on February 24, citing Kiev’s failure to implement the Minsk agreements, designed to give the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk special status within the Ukrainian state. The Kremlin recognized the Donbass republics as independent states, which have since voted to join Russia alongside Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. Moscow also demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc.

American journalist dies in Qatar
Grant Wahl died suddenly while attending the game between Argentina and the Netherlands
American sports reporter Grant Wahl, 48, has died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Wahl collapsed shortly after extra time began in Friday’s quarter-final fixture between Argentina and the Netherlands, with early reports suggesting that he may have suffered a heart attack – though this is yet to be confirmed.

According to reporters who were positioned near Wahl during the match, he appeared to collapse in his seat in the media section of the Lusail Stadium. Emergency workers were immediately called to the scene and he was transported to a nearby hospital.

“He received immediate emergency medical treatment on site, which continued as he was transferred by ambulance to Hamad General Hospital,” the Qatar World Cup organizing committee said of Wahl in a statement.

“We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes.”

Wahl, who was covering his eighth World Cup, had previously been briefly detained by Qatari authorities after he attempted to enter a stadium wearing a rainbow-colored shirt in a move designed to express solidarity with the LGBT community.

He wrote earlier this week that he had been feeling unwell and that he had visited a medical center in Qatar where he was told that he was suffering from suspected bronchitis.

“My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” Wahl stated, adding that he had tested negative for Covid-19.

“What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort.

Second journalist dies at World Cup – media
Khalid Al-Misslam was a photojournalist for Qatari channel Al Kass TV
Qatari photojournalist Khalid Al-Misslam has been reported as the second journalist to die while covering the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The world of journalism was first shocked on Friday when American soccer reporter Grant Wahl collapsed in the press box at the Lusail Stadium and later died while covering Argentina’s dramatic penalty shootout win over the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.

Later at the weekend, it was reported that a photojournalist for Qatari channel Al Kass TV, Khalid Al-Misslam, had also passed away.

No further information has been released about Al-Misslam’s death, with Qatari outlet The Gulf Times initially reporting the passing and sending condolences to his family on social media.

“Al Kass TV photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam passed away recently. Al-Misslam, a Qatari, died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022,” The Gulf Times tweeted on Saturday afternoon.

“We believe in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family.”

Al Kass TV has only briefly touched on the death during a live broadcast, and it is said that the broadcaster wants to await further details before releasing any statement on its employee.

The Qatar 2022 World Cup is set to conclude with its final on Sunday.

Before that, Argentina will take on Croatia in the semifinals on Tuesday, while underdogs Morocco meet holders France in the last four on Wednesday.
