米国、ウクライナに供与する武器が不足 - CNN

US running low on arms to give to Ukraine – CNN
The Pentagon is reportedly concerned about its stockpiles of artillery shells, as well as air defense and anti-tank missiles
Concern is growing in the US government about its inability to keep supplying Ukraine with state-of-the-art systems and ammunition amid its conflict with Russia, CNN reported on Thursday.

According to three US officials interviewed by the outlet, some of the challenges the US is facing in terms of supporting Ukraine include its “dwindling” stockpiles of arms and the ability of the defense industry to cope with demand. One official told CNN that there is a “finite amount” of excess stock that Washington can send to Kiev.

Washington is particularly concerned about the available stockpiles of 155mm artillery shells and Stinger air defense missiles, the report says. Some officials are also worried about the production of arms such as HARMs anti-radiation missiles, GMLRS surface-to-surface missiles, and Javelin anti-tank systems.

CNN’s sources maintain, however, that the dent in the stockpiles does not compromise national security, given that the weapons for Ukraine do not come from the supplies the Pentagon reserves for its own contingencies. A senior official also told the outlet that the assessment that the US is “running low” on arms is subjective, as it depends on how much risk the Pentagon is prepared to accept.

One of the major concerns is that the US defense industry is struggling to keep up with demand, while European countries cannot fully backfill their own stockpiles to replace the military hardware sent to Ukraine, officials say. However, to remedy the situation, the US is trying to ramp up production of certain types of arms.

Since the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in late February, the US and its Western allies have been providing Kiev with billions of dollars in security assistance, with Moscow repeatedly warning that weapons shipments will only prolong the conflict.

According to the US Department of Defense, as of early November, Washington has committed to sending Kiev over 1,400 Stingers, 8,500 Javelins, 142 155mm Howitzers, and up to 903,000 155mm artillery rounds.

Seoul may change stance on nuclear weapons – minister
Unification official says public support for acquiring a nuclear arsenal may become harder to ignore
South Korea may have to consider acquiring nuclear weapons or deploying American nukes on its territory if tensions with the North escalate further, Unification Minister Kwon Young-se has said.

“If inter-Korean relations continue to get worse and tensions keep rising, [the government] cannot ignore [such a call] indefinitely in case public opinion tilts toward the South’s nuclear armament in a broad meaning,” Kwon, Seoul’s top official responsible for relations with North Korea, told the Yonhap news agency on Thursday.

He added that such an option could potentially include “nuclear sharing” or the deployment of US tactical nuclear weapons on South Korean territory.

Kwon stated, however, that at the moment Seoul is not thinking about acquiring nuclear weapons or bringing back US warheads to the Korean Peninsula.

His comments came the same day Pyongyang fired a short-range ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff. The North stepped up its launches this month, including the firing of 23 missiles of various types on November 2.

North Korea enshrined the use of nuclear weapons into law last month. Kwon, however, reaffirmed that Seoul would continue to seek Pyongyang’s denuclearization “through extended deterrence, sanctions, and pressure.”

Washington removed nuclear weapons from South Korean territory in the early 1990s under a disarmament deal with the Soviet Union.

An opinion poll released by the NewsPim agency last month found that 51.2% of South Koreans are in favor of their country developing its own arsenal or the redeployment of US nuclear weapons, while 40% support the full denuclearization of the peninsula. A total of 1,014 people participated in the survey.

House Republicans to investigate Biden family
Back in control on Capitol Hill, the GOP says it’ll examine whether the US President is “compromised” by his son’s business dealings
Republican lawmakers announced on Thursday that they would probe whether US President Joe Biden had been “swayed by foreign dollars or influence” through his son, Hunter Biden. President Biden met with more than a dozen of Hunter’s foreign associates, including the executive of a Ukrainian energy firm that employed the president’s son, files from Hunter’s laptop revealed.

Speaking at a press conference, House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer alleged that the Biden family “flourished and became millionaires by simply offering access to the family.” Citing whistleblowers, Comer claimed that “Hunter Biden and Joe Biden were involved in a scheme to try to get China to buy liquefied natural gas.”

Comer listed defrauding the United States, wire fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, conspiracy, and violation of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, as part of the “wide range of criminality” the Biden family was allegedly involved in.

These allegations were detailed in a report released shortly after the briefing.
