米英がロシア人鎮圧訓練

US and UK troops train to ‘pacify Russian civilians’ – media
Russian speakers allegedly role-played as an unruly mob stirred up by “Fakebook” and “Twatter” posts
US and UK military forces have held a joint exercise to practice interoperability and test their latest gadgets and combat techniques on terrain similar to the “Ukrainian steppe,” reportedly including war games simulating how they might “pacify” mobs of angry Russian-speaking civilians.

The ongoing drills are being held in California’s Mojave Desert as part of the Pentagon’s 'Project Convergence', which was expanded this year to include participation by allies Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

The troops, including an elite British infantry regiment, practiced “lessons learned” from the Russia-Ukraine conflict while training on open desert landscapes deemed “similar to the flat terrain of the Ukrainian steppe,” the UK’s Times newspaper said.

The drills took place at Fort Irwin, a sprawling US Army base that includes realistic-looking mock villages built with the help of Hollywood set designers. In years past, Arabic speakers and Afghans were hired and brought in from the Los Angeles area to play the part of civilians. This time around, with the Russia-Ukraine conflict raging in Eastern Europe, most of the non-combatants were played by Russian speakers.

“The fake civilians even have their own social media networks – 'Fakebook' and 'Twatter' – on which they whip up an unruly mob by reporting any examples of US troops behaving poorly,” the Times said. “The soldiers must then pacify the crowds.”

The exercise marked the first time that members of the UK’s new Ranger Regiment deployed alongside the US 75th Ranger Regiment, according to a UK government statement. It allowed troops to test advanced technology – such as artificial intelligence, robotics and new drones – while practicing information-sharing procedures with their allies.

For instance, swarms of drones identified targets and British rocket launchers fired at enemy positions spotted by US F-35 fighter jets, the Times said. UK defense procurement minister Alex Chalk said the exercise demonstrated the progress that the British Army is making as a “more lethal, agile and expeditionary force, through key collaboration with our longstanding international allies and partners.”

Russia isn’t alone in drawing the attention of Western military planners. An earlier stage of Project Convergence simulated a conflict breaking out on a Pacific island, after the Pentagon identified China as the top threat to US national security.

Cryptocurrency exchange FTX has commenced voluntary bankruptcy proceedings in the US, the platform announced on Friday.

The company will begin “an orderly process to review and monetize assets for the benefit of all global stakeholders,” FTX said in a statement on Twitter.

Chief Executive Sam Bankman-Fried resigned, and a new CEO, John J. Ray III, was appointed, the exchange added.

The announcement comes days after larger rival Binance abandoned plans to acquire FTX and left the exchange with the task of raising roughly $9 billion from investors and rivals to stay afloat.

Binance backed out of the deal after a due diligence examination and recent reports of mishandled customer funds, as well as alleged investigations by the US authorities into the company. Abandonment of the deal triggered a meltdown in the cryptocurrency market, with the price of Bitcoin sinking to its lowest level in two years.

The initiation of bankruptcy proceedings by FTX may trigger what could be one of the biggest meltdowns in the industry, according to Reuters.

The financial troubles of major cryptocurrency hub FXT threaten to wreak havoc on crypto firms and transform how they’re run, JPMorgan strategists warned on Wednesday.

According to a research note cited by Business Insider, the analysts believe this will likely send the price of Bitcoin down 25% to $13,000 a coin.

Crypto players are likely facing demands from lenders to put up more collateral, and some may collapse under the pressure, the Wall Street strategists wrote. “It looks likely that a new cascade of margin calls, deleveraging and crypto company/platform failures is starting,” they said.

The JPMorgan team pointed out to the close links between FTX and its boss Sam Bankman-Fried’s trading firm Alameda Research, and the wider crypto space.

According to the report, Bankman-Fried, who had been heralded as the white knight of crypto, and even compared to Warren Buffett, now appears to be the one in need of rescue. “The number of entities with stronger balance sheets able to rescue those with low capital and high leverage is shrinking within the crypto ecosystem,” the strategists said.
They indicated that the whole situation “creates a confidence crisis and reduces the appetite of other crypto companies to come to the rescue.”

It could take several weeks for the crypto turmoil to settle down, unless FTX is quickly rescued, the experts suggested. “With the crypto market cap standing at just above $1 trillion before the FTX/Alameda Research collapse, our guess is that the crypto market will find a floor above $500 billion in the current deleveraging phase,” they said.

On Wednesday, Bitcoin dropped to its lowest level in nearly two years on news of the potential bankruptcy of Bankman-Fried's company after the world’s largest crypto trading platform Binance abandoned plans to acquire FTX.
