ウクライナがEUに入れば EUの終焉

Russia warns about 'end of EU'
Ukraine’s ideology is incompatible with the bloc’s stated values, Moscow claims
A decision by Brussels to initiate the procedure of Ukraine’s accession to EU membership would signify the end of the 27-member bloc, Russia’s deputy foreign minister Alexander Glushko has warned.

Modern Ukraine is a “state where Nazi groups rule the show and Nazi ideology reigns, which is incompatible with European values,” Glushko told journalists on Friday.

If Brussels welcomes such a country “this would mean the end of the EU and would show that the EU isn't guided by the values on which it stands and was created, but purely by geopolitics,” he explained.

The bloc has accelerated moves aimed at making Kiev a member after the launch of the Russian military operation in late February.

The government of Volodymyr Zelensky has already submitted its membership questionnaire to Brussels, with the European Commission planning to announce its opinion on it in June.

Russia had initially said it wouldn’t object to Ukraine being in the EU as, unlike the US-led NATO alliance, it's not a military bloc.

But Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov revealed on Friday that Moscow has changed its stance on the issue.

The EU's behavior during the conflict, which included weapons shipments to Kiev and a push for a military solution, indicated that the bloc was in the process of merging with NATO and in the future will operate as merely its extension, Lavrov claimed.

“The EU is turning from the constructive economic platform that it was originally meant to be into an aggressive militant player that has ambitions stretching far beyond the European continent,” he said.

EU calls for confiscation of frozen Russian assets
Sanctioned assets should be used to rebuild Ukraine, the European Council president says
Russian assets that have been frozen in the EU as part of sanctions against Moscow over the conflict with Kiev should be seized and allocated for the reconstruction of Ukraine, European Council President Charles Michel said on Thursday.

“I’m absolutely convinced that this is extremely important not only to freeze assets, but also to make it possible to confiscate them, to make them available for rebuilding the country. I’m personally convinced,” Michel insisted in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

He revealed that he had already told the Council’s legal service to come up with “some possible ideas in order to find a legal solution in line with the principles of the rule of law, that would facilitate and make possible the confiscation of the assets of the people who are sanctioned by the EU or by other countries in the world.”

Acting in such a manner should be “a question of fairness, a question of justice” for Brussels, he added.

However, Michel acknowledged that implementing his plan on a “legal level is not so simple.”

Europe becoming cocaine hub – Europol
The second-most-consumed drug in Europe had a market retail value of over $11 billion in 2020
Europe’s cocaine market is expanding amid “unprecedented levels” of trafficking and “historically high availability,” EU agencies said in a report on Friday, warning that the continent is increasingly becoming a hub for the production and trans-shipment of drugs around the world.

The growth in the European market is driven by high levels of production in South America and new production capabilities inside Europ itself, the joint report by Europol and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) said.

MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. The Russian Federation asserted to the US that it wouldn’t capitulate in Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov told the Soloviev Live TV channel.

"We say firmly and clearly and are unequivocally confident, at least, Russian diplomats who work here, there won’t ever be any capitulation," the diplomat said. "We are confident that all the goals set by the supreme commander-in-chief before our armed forces will be completely attained. We will never give up, won’t back up," he added.

The ambassador noted that the goals and tasks of Russia’s special military operation are clearly defined. "All that we want is the absence of any threat for the Russian Federation from Ukrainian soil," he noted.

The envoy pointed out that the US is being drawn deeper into the conflict with unpredictable consequences. "Nevertheless, nowadays the situation is highly dangerous. The US is being drawn deeper into the conflict with the most unpredictable consequences for relations between two nuclear powers," he added.

Turkey offers to solve Mariupol stand-off
Russia has so far not agreed to the plan, according to Ankara
Turkey has offered to evacuate Ukrainian fighters and civilians from the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s top adviser Ibrahim Kalin told Reuters on Saturday.

Currently, only fighters from the neo-Nazi Azov regiment and some units of the Ukrainian military remain inside the facility. Last week, both Russia and Ukraine said the evacuation of civilians from the sprawling industrial complex was complete.

Under the Turkish scheme, wounded fighters and civilians would be taken from the plant by land to the Ukrainian port of Berdyansk, controlled by Russian forces, and then shipped to Istanbul. Kalin did not explain why the land transfer was needed given that Mariupol has a large port of its own.

“If it can be done that way, we are happy to do it. We are ready. In fact our ship is ready to go and bring the injured soldiers and other civilians to Turkey,” Kalin said, adding that the plan might still materialize. “It may happen, yes. I believe it may happen.”

これまで経過を追っていないのでよくわかりません。Keir Starmerに辞めろと叫ぶ人が増えています。

Keir Starmer must know he can’t appease the rabid right

Labour must stop trying to ingratiate itself to reactionary voters and instead create a bold, pro-Europe leftwing vision, writes Julian Skidmore. Plus letters from Imelda O’Brien, Peter Wrigley, Stephen Decker and Neil Hickman

Owen Jones lays bare the tactical weaknesses in Keir Starmer’s Labour (Starmer gambled Labour’s fortunes on his integrity – no wonder he’s in deep trouble, 9 May). It doesn’t work to increasingly appease the right, because in our current divisive political era, one can never appease enough when the game is just a zero-sum turf war.

So Beergate could be an indicative test case. If he’s fined, either Keir Starmer ends up backing down on the value of integrity, thus saving Boris Johnson and then having to tack further right to ingratiate himself in an increasingly hostile environment. Or, he could take the poison pill and allow himself to be deposed in favour of a new, capable leader.

Learning from this is the most important thing. Centrists do, in fact, need at least the moderate left wing of the party, and the coalition of the Labour movement is better for it. Labour does need to collaborate with all opposition parties. And it needs to stop triangulating itself to impotence over the “red wall” and create a bold, pro-Europe vision that can demolish it, along with our deepening illiberalism.
Julian Skidmore

When I joined Labour in 2015, it was not because I was a radical, leftist “Corbynista”, it was because the party was offering a socialist agenda for the first time in my voting life. I was more excited by John McDonnell as a chancellor than I was by Jeremy Corbyn as leader; it was their manifesto I was interested in.

Of course the rightwing press were terrified. I wish Labour would devote its energies to standing up for the people who are really struggling and the people who want to support them. Start giving us a message we can get behind rather than following votes and you will find that you leave the rightwing press behind.

France denies Ukrainian claims
President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed French leader Emmanuel Macron urged him to up give up some sovereignty to end the conflict with Russia
French President Emmanuel Macron has “never” asked Volodymyr Zelensky to make territorial concessions to end the ongoing conflict with Russia, contrary to statements by the Ukrainian leader, the Elysee has insisted.

During a Thursday interview with Italian broadcaster Rai 1, Zelensky accused Macron of suggesting that an effort should be made to “look for a way out for Russia” so that the fighting in Ukraine could stop.

“Proposing to us to give up something of our sovereignty to save [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s face doesn’t seem right coming from some leaders. It is a waste of time,” the Ukrainian president said when asked about his French counterpart’s warning that Europe must avoid humiliating Putin.

The French presidency responded to those claims on Friday, insisting that Macron “has never asked for concessions from Zelensky. He has always said that it is up to the Ukrainians to decide the terms of their negotiations with the Russians.”

“The President of the Republic has never discussed anything with Vladimir Putin without the agreement of President Zelensky,” the Elysee added.
