I pledged what? Serbian President Vucic seems surprised after Trump announces that Belgrade will move embassy to Jerusalem (VIDEO)
Aleksandar Vucic's reaction to Donald Trump's announcement that Belgrade will move its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem next July made some people wonder if the news had come as a surprise to the Serbian leader.

Vucic visited Washington this week to sign a US-brokered deal with Avdullah Hoti, prime minister of the breakaway Serbian region of Kosovo. The agreement was touted as a great diplomatic success for Washington, which managed to bring the two Balkan rivals closer together. Among other things, Kosovo, a Muslim-majority entity, agreed to recognize Israel while Serbia agreed to move its embassy to Jerusalem, following in the footsteps of the US.

The Serbian president's reaction to the announcement, however, made some commenters wonder whether he knew the details of the document that he had signed. As Trump described the pledge as "fantastic," Vucic looked sideways at his American host, then turned pages of the agreement before making a hand gesture, which one could interpret as an aborted face-palm.

Comments online suggested Vucic may not have read the fine print before signing the agreement, and called the scene humiliating. Heads will soon roll among the president's aides, some predicted.

Adding to the confusion, Trump mistakenly called Hoti the "president of Kosovo."

The Trump administration first announced plans to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and move its embassy accordingly in 2017. The move was lauded in Israel, but it angered Palestinians, who said that the US clearly was no longer in a position to serve as a neutral mediator in the Arab-Israeli conflict. A handful of other nations have since vowed to move their embassies in Jerusalem, including Guatemala, Honduras and Malawi.

Iran: Serbia’s Decision to Move Embassy to Jerusalem Not Supported Internationally
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday that Serbia’s decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is wrong and will not have international support.

“Iran has always welcomed the settlement of conflicts between Serbia and Kosovo and made efforts to this end,” Khatibzadeh said in a press conference in Tehran.

“Any moving of embassies to Jerusalem is wrong and lacks the international community’s companionship and backing,” he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that Serbia will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, becoming the first European country to follow the United States in making the move.

In December 2017, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced the shifting the US embassy from Tel Aviv.

On Friday, Netanyahu revealed Serbia's move, adding that the transfer will happen by July 2021.

Meanwhile, a senior Palestinian official slammed Serbia's decision, saying it makes "Palestine a victim" of Trump's re-election hopes.

"Palestine has become a victim of the electoral ambitions of President Trump, whose team would take any action, no matter how destructive for peace ... to achieve his re-election," said Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), in a tweet.

"This, just like the UAE-Israel agreement [to normalize diplomatic ties], isn't about Middle East Peace," he added.

Israel seized control of East Jerusalem in 1967 and later annexed it in moves never recognised by the international community.

#BREAKING | German government spokesman claims tests show Navalny was 'poisoned by nerve agent of Novichok group' https://sptnkne.ws/D6zg

Germany claims blogger Navalny was poisoned with Novichok class agent
Berlin will provide new information in the Alexei Navalny case to its partners in the European Union and international organizations, the German cabinet said in a statement on Wednesday

BERLIN, September 2. /TASS/. The German government claims that Russian blogger Alexei Navalny was "beyond doubt" affected by a Novichok class chemical agent.
"At the initiative of the Charite hospital the Bundeswehr’s special laboratory has carried out toxicological analysis of Alexei Navalny’s test samples. The analysis provided indisputable proof of the presence of a Novichok class nerve agent," the German Cabinet’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert told the media. He added that Chancellor Angela Merkel on Wednesday held a conference with a number of ministers and agreed a number of steps in the light of the latest data.
"The German government condemns this attack in the most resolute way," Seibert said. "The German Foreign Ministry will inform Russia’s ambassador on the results of the tests," he said.
"The federal government will provide information on testing results to the EU and NATO through the Foreign Ministry’s channels," the statement reads. The cabinet added that "an appropriate joint reaction will be discussed."
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and German parliamentary factions will also be informed.
"We urgently call on the Russian government to make statements on the matter," the statement adds.
On August 20, a plane carrying Navalny made an emergency landing in Omsk after the blogger had suddenly felt unwell in mid-flight. Navalny was taken to hospital in a coma and was hooked up to a ventilator. On August 22, he was flown to Germany for treatment at Berlin’s Charite hospital. German doctors said on August 24 that they had found signs of Navalny’s intoxication with substances from the cholinesterase inhibitors group. The doctors added that there was no threat to his life but there was the possibility of long-term effects on his nervous system.

Kremlin says Germany didn’t inform Moscow of data showing opposition figure Navalny was poisoned with Novichok-like nerve agent
Moscow didn’t receive any new data on the poisoning of Alexey Navalny from Berlin. That's according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov after German authorities announced that tests found a Novichok-like nerve agent in his system.
“No, we didn’t receive this information,” Peskov responded when addressed on the issue. The opposition figure was evacuated to Berlin, at his family's request, a week and a half ago.
The Foreign Ministry also said it was still waiting for Germany to reply to an official inquest from the office of Russia’s Prosecutor General regarding Navalny’s condition.
On Wednesday afternoon, Berlin claimed that hospital tests showed "beyond doubt" that Navalny had been affected by a Novichok class chemical agent. The substance is similar to the one allegedly used against Russian-born British intelligence agent Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, in Salisbury, back in 2018.
The Moscow protest leader and anti-corruption campaigner was transferred to a German hospital after falling ill on a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk on August 20. He reportedly remains in an induced coma.

Germany defies legal mechanisms of cooperation with Russia in situation with Navalny - FM
Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the German statements could become more comprehensible if their goal was to justify the previously drafted measures against Russia
MOSCOW, September 3. /TASS/. Berlin absolutely defies the legal mechanisms of cooperation with Moscow in the situation with Russian blogger Alexei Navalny, the Russian Foreign Ministry told TASS on Wednesday.
"We are again witnessing a situation when our counterparts prefer strong public statements, without presenting any facts but totally disregarding the current legal mechanisms of cooperation, to meticulous work based on physical facts and evidence and substantive cooperation between the law enforcement and health agencies," the foreign ministry said.
Nevertheless, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out that the German statements could become more comprehensible if their goal was to justify the previously drafted measures against Russia.
"It is becoming clear why they use megaphone diplomacy, replace normal cooperation with an information campaign, make public appeals to the EU and NATO and mention the OPCW. However, if the ultimate goal is still a thorough investigation by the law enforcement agencies with participation of the medical institutions - which we firmly insist on - then we call on our counterparts to fully cooperate and to exchange information using existing bilateral legal mechanisms," the statement says.
The Foreign Ministry recalled that a week ago, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office submitted an official request for legal assistance to the German justice ministry, but the German counterparts have only confirmed the receipt of the request. Along with this, the Foreign Ministry noted, the Prosecutor General’s Office expressed its readiness to share with the German side the results of tests and examinations conducted after Navalny’s hospitalization.
After Navalny had been transferred to Berlin’s Charite hospital, doctors from Omsk immediately offered any possible assistance in diagnostics in a letter to German doctors.
"In a reply, the German hospital thanked them for concern, but did not ask for any particular help," the Russian Foreign Ministry added. "There is an impression that somebody forbids the German Health Ministry and health workers from communicating with their Russian counterparts."
"Russia is still waiting for an official response from Berlin to the request from the Prosecutor General’s Office and Russian medical institutions," the foreign ministry concluded.

German statements on Navalny case
Earlier on Wednesday, the German Cabinet’s spokesperson Steffen Seibert said that at the initiative of the Charite hospital the Bundeswehr’s special laboratory had carried out toxicological analysis of Alexei Navalny’s test samples. The analysis provided indisputable proof of the presence of a Novichok class nerve agent, he said. Seibert added that Chancellor Angela Merkel held a meeting with some ministers and agreed a number of steps in the light of the latest data. According to the spokesman, the German Foreign Ministry will inform Russia’s ambassador on the results of the tests and that the European Union, NATO and the OPCW will be updated on the Navalny case.

Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS that the Kremlin was unaware of the German authorities’ conclusions that blogger Alexei Navalny was allegedly poisoned with the Novichok toxic agent. A source told TASS that Russian forensic experts had not found any poisonous or toxic chemicals in Navalny’s system or on his belongings. Moreover, during an inquiry the police had found no evidence of intentional infliction of bodily harm to Navalny.
Navalny was rushed to a local hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk on August 20 after collapsing on the Tomsk-Moscow flight. He fell into a coma and was put on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. On August 22, he was airlifted to the Charite hospital in Berlin. On August 24, German doctors said that indicators of cholinesterase inhibitors had been found in his body. The doctors added that his life was not in danger but long-term complications for his nervous system could not be ruled out.

Germany's allegations about Navalny could be justification for pre-planned anti-Russian ‘response’ – Russian Foreign Ministry
Moscow says it's witnessing yet another instance of Western politicians preferring “loud public statements” instead of evidence and facts when it comes to the alleged poisoning of Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign affairs has published a statement in which it lashed out at Berlin after the German government claimed that Navalny was “poisoned” by a “Novichok class nerve agent.” Since the end of August, when the anti-corruption campaigner was sent to Germany from Russia for treatment, Berlin has been neglecting bilateral cooperation mechanisms that would allow Russia to investigate the situation, Moscow says.
It seems that somebody restricts [the] German Justice Ministry, as well as [German] medical workers, from speaking to their Russian colleagues.
The ministry recalled that Russia's Prosecutor General's Office sent a request to the German Justice Ministry asking to assist with the investigation. It was also willing to share all the results of tests that were carried out on Navalny during his emergency hospitalization immediately after he felt unwell on a flight from Siberia to Moscow.
Despite the fact that Russian doctors, who managed to save his life in those crucial hours, were also willing to share all their information with their German colleagues, both of the requests have remained unanswered, Moscow says.
If the goal is to justify certain pre-planned ‘response measures’ announced earlier, it becomes clear why mouthpiece diplomacy, substitution of proper cooperation with an information campaign, public addresses to EU and NATO and mentioning of the OPCW are being used.

Lukashenko Claims Intercept of Warsaw-Berlin Call Shows Merkel Made False Statements About Navalny
On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Germany was treating the Navalny case as "attempted murder by poisoning," and was waiting for Russia to explain its position and provide answers.
He added that his team will hand over the recording to Russia's Federal Security Service.
Earlier this week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that Berlin was treating the Navalny case as "attempted murder by poisoning," and was waiting for Russia to explain its position and provide answers. She also said that her government would consult with its allies in NATO and the EU on how to respond.
The chancellor made her statement after a spokesman for the German government claimed that tests showed that Russian opposition figure Navalny was poisoned by a nerve agent of the Novichok group.
A call between Warsaw and Berlin was intercepted, showing that German Chancellor Merkel's statements about Alexei Navalny were false, President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, claimed during a meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in Minsk on Thursday.
A Telegram channel Pul Pervogo shared a video showing Lukashenko during the meeting with Mishustin. The Belarusian president can be heard saying that the call which Minsk had intercepted proves that Merkel's statements were false and Navalny was not poisoned.
On 20 August, Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny fell gravely ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. Following an emergency landing in Omsk, he was taken to a local hospital where for the next 44 hours doctors fought for his life, as he went into a coma and was put on an artificial lung ventilator.
Immediately after Navalny fell ill, his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh rushed to claim that he might have been poisoned. Russian doctors said they did not rule out poisoning at the beginning but after multiple tests were conducted they found no traces of poisonous substances in Navalny's system. They suggested that his condition was caused by an abrupt drop of glucose in his blood due to a metabolic imbalance.
On 22 August, Navalny was flown to Berlin for further treatment at the Charite clinic. German doctors claimed that they had found traces of a substance from the group of cholinesterase inhibitors in his body, which the Russian doctors denied, citing his initial test results.

Navalny Poisoning Raises Pressure on Merkel to Cancel Russian Pipeline

Evidence that the Russian opposition leader was attacked with a military-grade nerve agent has placed new pressures on the German chancellor.
BRUSSELS − Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany has long defended her decision to go ahead with an $11 billion Russian gas pipeline, sticking to her position that politics and business should remain separate.

But that approach came under intense pressure Thursday, with a Russian dissident in a German hospital, poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent that is held closely by the Russian military. Even some members of her own party insisted that the chancellor should respond by canceling the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.

The 764-mile pair of pipelines under the Baltic Sea is being built by a consortium led by the Russian energy giant Gazprom, which owns it, and would double the capacity for natural gas to flow directly from Russia to Germany. It has been criticized by many in Europe and the United States for increasing Russian leverage on Germany and helping to line the pockets of the Russian state.

But the pipeline is 94 percent completed, and Ms. Merkel defended the need to finish it as recently as last Friday. At that point, Aleksei A. Navalny, the Russian opposition leader, was already in Berlin for treatment of a poisoning in Russia, although the use of the nerve agent, Novichok, had not yet been publicly confirmed.

But with the identification of Novichok as the poison, the debate on the pipeline has now been reopened.

For a long time, Ms. Merkel has advocated trade and diplomatic engagement with both Russia and China despite their internal repressions and external aggressiveness. Her argument has been that Russia is too close to Europe, and China too economically powerful, to isolate either of them, and that trade provides leverage on them that sanctions do not.

It is getting harder for her to have it both ways. German foreign policy has been notably more assertive to Russia after the country seized Crimea and shot down a Malaysian airliner, and to China after its increasing boldness and repression at home and abroad under its leader, Xi Jinping.

And so Nord Stream 2, originally promoted by her coalition partners, the Social Democrats, is becoming harder to defend, given that its owner, Gazprom, is controlled by the Kremlin of President Vladimir V. Putin. More Germans are asking how she − and many other European leaders − can portray Russia as a rogue nation in one breath and a legitimate commercial partner in the next?

On Thursday, Norbert Röttgen, a senior member of the chancellor’s conservative party and the head of the foreign affairs committee in Parliament, who has long been critical of Nord Stream 2, called for Germany to respond to the poisoning with tough measures that could include the pipeline and Russia’s sales of natural gas.

“The only language that Mr. Putin understands is tough language,” Mr. Röttgen said. “We need to respond with the only language that Putin understands, the language of natural gas and selling natural gas.’’

To leave Nord Stream 2 out of the question now, he said, “would be the ultimate and maximum confirmation for Vladimir Putin to continue with exactly these kind of policies, because it has been proven once again that there will be no response from Europe.”

The Trump administration and many in Congress have tried to stop the pipeline through the use of secondary sanctions that target companies working to lay the pipeline and would deny them access to the American market and banking system. Ms. Merkel and the European Union have decried their use, saying they are illegitimate and should be used against adversaries, not allies.

While Ms. Merkel may have been unwilling to bend to American pressure, however, the poisoning of Mr. Navalny may “now give her another reason to do so,’’ noted Daniela Schwarzer, director of the German Council on Foreign Relations. “She could blame it on the Russians, not on the Americans.’’

Ms. Merkel is not alone in defending the project. Others in her party supported her stance, citing its usefulness for maintaining leverage on Moscow, which needs the income.

“We need to have a joint European response, and we need to have a lever that ensures a robust response, and that has to involve the economy,” said Jürgen Hardt, foreign policy spokesman for the conservatives in Parliament.

German military toxicologists find traces of Novichok in Russian opposition figure Navalny’s blood, urine & skin – Der Spiegel
Specialists from Munich Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology have found Alexey Navalny had traces of a poison from the Novichok family in his system, as well as in a bottle he was carrying on the flight where he became unwell.

That's according to Gemany's leading news magazine Der Spiegel, which cited government sources. The report says the substance was found in the anti-corruption activist's blood and urine and also on his skin. The disclosure comes as Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, also on Friday, revealed that German authorities have promised to present to Russia concrete facts concerning their findings.

Bundeswehr [German military] specialists who presented the examination results claimed that “undoubtedly, the poison belongs to the Novichok family,” Der Spiegel insists. According to the magazine it was also in the bottle, which was allegedly handed to the German medics by Navalny's family.

“The Charite Clinic [in Berlin] quickly brought the Bundeswehr into the investigation. Soon, civilian experts in Berlin concluded that Navalny had been poisoned,” it continues. “But the substance itself could not be isolated. It took the Bundeswehr several days in a special laboratory in Munich to come to a clear conclusion that Navalny was in contact with poison from the Novichok group.”

Meanwhile, Lavrov said that Moscow is still waiting for the results from Berlin. He stressed that, according to Russian sources, the delay is because of the German foreign ministry. “Today we asked our counterparts in the European Union and in Germany once again if German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has been accusing us of this wrongdoing, of this alleged poisoning, for two days now, but is still unable to present any proof, if she has any plans to give instructions to her subordinates to see to it that there is a reply from the German Ministry of Justice to the Prosecutor General’s query,” the foreign minister explained.

“Now, I am forced to say out loud that, according to our sources, this reply is being delayed due to the Foreign Ministry’s stance,” Lavrov said. “We have instructed our ambassador to ask corresponding questions and to inquire into what is behind the delay. We’ve been promised today that an answer will follow shortly. When there is a reply containing concrete facts, which, as far as I understand, the Germans believe will be there, then we will react to it.”

On August 20, a plane carrying Navalny made an emergency landing in Omsk after the blogger suddenly felt unwell on a flight from Siberia to Moscow. Navalny was taken to hospital in a coma and was put on a ventilator. On August 22, he was flown to Germany for treatment. German doctors said on August 24 that they had found signs of Navalny’s intoxication with substances from the cholinesterase inhibitors group. The doctors added that there was no threat to his life but there was the possibility of long-term effects on his nervous system.
