‘Practically all children’ will get infected, Madrid leader admits as schools plan to reopen amid spike in Covid-19 cases
2 Sep, 2020 18:06

As the number of coronavirus cases rose in Spain and Madrid in particular, the capital’s premier argued that children will likely get infected at home or elsewhere, but that schools will be safe once they reopen.

“Over the school year it is likely that practically all children, one way or another,” will be infected with the coronavirus, Madrid regional premier Isabel Díaz Ayuso told esRadio in an interview on Wednesday.
Perhaps they will become infected over the weekend at a family meeting, or in the afternoon in the park or catch it from a classmate. We just don’t know, because the virus can be anywhere.

With the school year scheduled to begin next week, Ayuso has ordered all teachers to get tested for Covid-19. The combination of short notice, long lines and the government contracting with a private company to take care of the tests has infuriated the educators.

“There are thousands of us, it’s crazy to bring us all together,” Esteban Álvarez, president of ADMAD, the Madrid Association of High School Principals, fumed to the newspaper El Pais.

Madrid accounts for nearly a third of all the new coronavirus cases in Spain over the past week and 30 percent of hospitalizations, according to data released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday. Yet the capital has only 14 percent of Spain’s overall population.

Ayuso thinks the government is scapegoating the capital region, and that schools are not to blame for the Covid-19 spike.

“Everyone is transmitting [the virus] and we haven’t started school. Schools will become very safe places. The problem is not schools,” she told esRadio, further arguing that “people must go out into the streets” and “children must return to school” to be with children of their own age, get back to their “routines” and “learn to socialize.”

Spain was hit hard by the early wave of coronavirus cases in Europe, trailing only Italy in the severity of the outbreak, and imposed strict lockdowns in response. Nearly 30,000 people have died due to the virus, according to official data.

Almost 471,000 cases have been registered since the start of the pandemic, just under 100,000 of them in just the last two weeks, sparking fears of the dreaded 'second wave' of infections.

No Traces of Poison Found in Navalny's Samples, Doctor Says
Alexei Navalny's condition rapidly deteriorated on Thursday, while he was on board a flight to Moscow, resulting in an urgent landing in Omsk, where he was admitted to an intensive care unit at a local hospital.
There are no traces of poison in blood and urine samples from Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny, Deputy Chief of Omsk Emergency Hospital Anatoly Kalinichenko told the press.
"We are now talking about various possibilities of poisoning. At the moment, the analyses that have been performed, detected no presence of poisons or their traces in blood or urine", Kalinichenko said.
While the diagnosis remains unclear, Navalny's press secretary Kira Yarmysh claimed that he could have been poisoned, speculating that something might have been poured into the tea he had at the Tomsk airport before boarding.
CCTV footage, however, shows that he received the cup of tea from his aide Ilya Pakhomov, which means none of those who prepared the beverage could have known for whom it was intended.
In the meantime, a special medical aircraft from Germany has arrived in Russia, as, according to reports, Navalny was expected to be transferred to the Charite hospital in Berlin. However, Russian medics believe that the patient's condition does not allow for transportation.
Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was on a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk to Moscow on Thursday when he fell ill. The airplane made an emergency landing in Omsk, where Navalny was hospitalised and put on a ventilator.

Metabolic Dysfunction Deemed Main Hypothesis for Alexei Navalny's Sickness, Doctor Says
代謝機能障害がアレクセイ・ナヴァルニーの病の主な仮説と見なされた:医師
Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny was taken to a hospital after he fell ill on a flight from the Siberian city of Tomsk to Moscow. Earlier in the day, the doctors treating the Kremlin critic said there were no traces of poison in his blood and urine samples.
Alexei Navalny has been diagnosed with a metabolic condition that caused a drop in blood sugar[Alexei Navalnyは、血糖値の低下を引き起こした代謝状態と診断された], the head doctor of the clinic where the opposition figure is undergoing treatment, told journalists.
"At the moment, we have working diagnoses − the main one, which we are leaning toward, is a сarbohydrate disbalance. This could be caused by a severe drop of sugar levels in the blood on the plane which led to loss of consciousness", the doctor said.
According to head doctor Alexander Murakhovsky, the traces of the chemical substances detected on Navalny's clothes and fingers turned out to be a regular substance used to make styrofoam cups.
Meanwhile, Moscow has been informed that Russian doctors made contact with their German counterparts dispatched to treat the 44-year-old opposition figure, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
"As far as we know − we asked today for an update − our doctors invited the doctors who flew in from Germany to visit the hospital, consult with our doctors, learn about treatment, tests, etc. I don't know if the Germans went there, but at least our doctors are in contact with them", Peskov told reporters.
Navalny's wife Yulia said she's asked President Putin for permission to have her husband transported to Germany.

Russian doctors say German colleagues congratulated them for ‘saving Navalny’s life’ & insist two lab tests found no poison traces
The doctors who first treated Moscow protest leader Alexey Navalny in Siberia have claimed it's beyond any doubt that they saved his life. They added that the German team which took him to Berlin agreed with this assessment.

Anatoly Kalinichenko, the deputy director at the emergency clinic in Omsk, explained that “poisoning” was one of the initial suspicions when Navalny arrived there. That was why the activist was moved to the toxicology unit, he said.

But [later] we received the final test results from two laboratories that found no toxic chemical substances that could be called poisons, or their residues.

Head Doctor Alexander Murakhovsky said that Omsk medics continued to treat Navalny and allowed his transportation to Germany only after his condition had stabilized. His clinic “saved Alexey Navalny’s life due to its great efforts, there is no doubt about that,” he told reporters.

Murakhovsky said he has since received an update from the Charite hospital in Berlin that the activist remains in stable but “serious” condition. “Our German colleagues are very grateful and also have no doubts that the patient’s life was saved [by the Russian team],” he noted.

Navalny unexpectedly felt ill and lost consciousness on Thursday. He was hospitalized in Omsk after his commercial flight from Tomsk to Moscow made an emergency landing in the city. A day and a half later, the activist was airlifted to Berlin, after his family and associates argued that he could not be adequately treated in Russia.

Navalny’s team quickly alleged that he was poisoned by authorities. The doctors, meanwhile, had narrowed down several preliminary diagnoses to a “metabolism imbalance,” caused by a “rapid drop in blood sugar level.”

Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny was poisoned, Berlin hospital says
Berlin (CNN)The hospital treating Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny says tests indicate that he was poisoned.
Berlin's Charite Hospital noted that the Kremlin critic was suffering from "intoxication by a substance from the group of cholinesterase inhibitors."
It added that Navalny, who was transferred to the German capital from the Siberian city of Omsk on Saturday morning, is in an artificial coma in an intensive care unit. "His state of health is serious, but there is currently no acute danger to his life," the hospital said in a statement Monday.

The specific substance used to poison Navalny has not yet been identified, according to the hospital.
Cholinesterase inhibitors are widely used as dementia medications. They are also found in pesticides and chemical warfare nerve agents, including sarin and Novichok, which was used in a 2018 attack on ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, England. They can slow the heart rate and are toxic to the brain.

EU demands investigation
Navalny's spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said last week that he fell sick from suspected poisoning on a flight to Moscow from the Siberian city of Tomsk.
Josep Borrell, the EU's top diplomat, called for an investigation in a statement published on Monday evening.
"The European Union strongly condemns what seems to be an attempt on Mr Navalny's life. It is imperative that the Russian authorities initiate an independent and transparent investigation on the poisoning of Mr Navalny without delay," read the statement by the bloc's High Representative for Foreign Affairs.
It continued: "The Russian people, as well as the international community, are demanding the facts behind Mr Navalny's poisoning. Those responsible must be held to account."
Earlier on Monday, the German government said it was "fairly likely" that Navalny was poisoned and would therefore need special protection.

"We are dealing with a patient who, it is fairly likely, was poisoned," Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, told journalists during a Monday press briefing. "Because there is a certain probability of a poison attack, protection is necessary," Seibert said.
''The suspicion is not that Mr. Navalny poisoned himself but that someone poisoned Mr. Navalny. And there are unfortunately one or two examples of such poisonings in recent Russian history," added Seibert.
Merkel and Germany's Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a joint statement: ''According to the medical team at the Charite [hospital], the clinical findings point to poisoning of Alexey Navalny. Given the prominent role of Mr. Navalny in the political opposition in Russia, local authorities are now urgently called upon to clear up this crime to the last detail -- and to do so in full transparency.
"We hope that Mr. Navalny can recover fully. Our good wishes also extend to his family, which is undergoing a severe test."
Jaka Bizilj, chairman for Cinema for Peace Foundation, which organized Navalny's medical evacuation to Germany, told CNN on Saturday that Navalny was in a "stable condition."
The Siberian hospital that had previously been treating Navalny on Friday rejected claims he had been poisoned -- even as his wife said the doctors there could not be trusted.

On Friday, Anatoly Kalinichenko, the deputy chief physician at the Russian hospital where Navalny was being treated told a news conference that no poisons were found in Navalny's blood or urine. "We don't believe that the patient suffered poisoning," Kalinichenko told local journalists.
"Poisons or traces of their presence in the body have not been identified. Probably, the diagnosis of 'poisoning' remains somewhere in the back of our minds. But we do not believe that the patient suffered poisoning," he added.

What are cholinesterase inhibitors?
Andrea Sella, professor of inorganic chemistry at University College London, told CNN that cholinesterase inhibitors are widely used in two categories of insecticides: organophosphates and carbamates.
"Organophosphate insecticides poisonings are common worldwide, as farmers sometimes mishandle them. But some organophosphates are far more poisonous than insecticides and have been used for military purposes e.g. sarin, VX and Novichok," he said.
"We're talking about a very broad range of materials," Sella added.
The inhibitor acts on the nervous system in place of the critical acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme, which transmits signals within biological systems. "The inhibitor attaches itself in the same place where the enzyme should be and the enzyme becomes irreversibly blocked," said Sella.
A suspected poisoning renews focus on threats faced by Putin's opponents
He said poisoning by cholinesterase inhibitors is easy to diagnose.
"It's one of the first thing they should have checked in Omsk. There are a number of symptoms that accompany this poisoning including various types of muscle paralysis, contraction of the pupil in the eye, blood tests, and so on."
The Charite Hospital in Berlin said in its Monday statement that Navalny is being treated with the antidote atropine.
Sella added that the atropine treatment is used to calm the nervous system and act against overstimulation, and agents such as Pralidoxime are used to reverse the attachment of the inhibitor and restore the activity of the AChE enzyme.

However, fast treatment is needed, he said.
"If you don't act quickly you could have long-term damage associated with the nerve system," Sella added. "Navalny was treated and kept alive, yes, but whether or not if he'll have further damage remains to be seen."

Kremlin: German Clinic's Diagnosis of Navalny's Condition Doesn't Show He Was Definitely Poisoned
Earlier on Tuesday, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell said that the European Union is calling for an independent Russian investigation into Navalny's condition.

The diagnosis of Russian opposition figure Navalny's condition by the German Charite clinic does not indicate that he was definitely poisoned, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

He also commented on rumours of the Kremlin's complicity in Navalny's alleged poisoning:

"We cannot treat the accusations you mentioned seriously. These accusations have absolutely nothing to do with truth and are more like empty noise," Peskov told reporters.

The spokesman added that the Kremlin does not understand why German doctors reached their conclusions so quickly.

"We do not understand why our German colleagues are in such a hurry to use the word 'poisoning' and so on. This version was among the first to be considered by our doctors, but, I repeat, the exact substance has not been determined," Peskov said.

Doctors at Berlin's Charite clinic said on Monday that Navalny experienced intoxication with cholinesterase inhibitors but the tests to determine the exact substance used were ongoing.

Peskov noted that the analyses of Russian and German doctors were similar, but they drew different conclusions. Russian doctors detected low cholinesterase in the first hours after Navalny was hospitalized and immediately began using atropine, which is now being administered by the doctors in Berlin as well.

"If German doctors have grounds to use this version as the main one, some information will probably be presented [to substantiate]," Peskov said.

The Kremlin sees no reason to launch an investigation into Navalny's alleged poisoning, the spokesman said, adding that a probe could be launched only if the poisoning is confirmed.

"The substance must be found first, to understand what caused this condition. There must be grounds for investigation. For now, we are seeing a comatose patient," Peskov said.

The most important thing right now is to help Navalny get well, he added.

The European Union Calls for Investigation

High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell commented on Navalny's case on Tuesday, urging Moscow to launch a probe into the opposition figure's illness.

"The preliminary test results from the Charite – Universitatsmedizin hospital in Berlin indicate that the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned during his stay in Siberia. … It is imperative that the Russian authorities initiate an independent and transparent investigation on the poisoning of Mr Navalny without delay," Borrell said.

What Happened to Navalny?

Russian opposition politician Navalny suffered an acute health condition and went into a coma during a flight from Tomsk in Siberia to Moscow last Thursday. After an emergency landing in Omsk, he was hospitalised with suspected poisoning as one of the possible reasons behind his condition. Later, Russian medics found no traces of poison in his samples and suggested that his condition was caused by an abrupt drop in blood sugar levels linked to a metabolic imbalance.

On Saturday, he was flown to Berlin for further treatment. According to a statement by the lead doctor of the Omsk hospital, Aleksandr Murakhovsky, German doctors said in a letter that Navalny's condition remained stable but serious and thanked their Russian colleagues for saving his life.
