Top US general visits Israel amid heightened border tension
JERUSALEM - America's top general made an unannounced visit to Israel on Friday for talks on "Iran and regional security challenges", Israel's army said as it confirmed a reinforced presence on its northern border.

General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alternate premier and Defence Minister Benny Gantz and Israel's army chief Aviv Kohavi.

Earlier on Friday, explosions on the Syrian side of the security fence in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights caused damage to a vehicle and a civilian building on the Israeli side, an army statement said.

The army said it was investigating the incident, and it was not immediately clear if there had been an attempted attack on Israeli positions from within Syria.

On Monday, five Iran-backed fighters were killed in an Israeli missile strike south of the Syrian capital Damascus, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, an ally of the Syrian regime, said one of its fighters was among the dead.

Israel has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the country's civil war in 2011, but rarely comments on such operations.

The Israeli army then announced an initial reinforcement of the northern border on Thursday, with Israeli media reporting the move was made in response to threats of retaliation from Hezbollah.

A further troop reinforcement on the northern border was announced on Friday, with the army saying it had "elevated its readiness against various potential enemy actions".

"The Israel Defence Forces holds the Lebanese Government responsible for all actions emanating from Lebanon," the statement said, without making reference to Hezbollah.

Gantz said Milley's visit underscored the close security ties between Washington and the Jewish state and warned Israel was "ready for any scenario and any threat".

"I do not suggest our enemies to test us," Gantz said in the statement.

Ohio’s $60 million bribery scandal could ensnare the American nuclear sector, because public trust is undermined

Ohio’s $60 million bribery scandal could ensnare the American nuclear sector, because public trust is undermined
By Ken Silverstein, award-winning columnist who has covered energy and the environment for more than two decades. Follow him @Ken_Silverstein
Ohio’s $60 million corruption, bribery case – that has ensnared the House speaker and four others – has also embroiled the nuclear power industry, which is at the heart of the criminal charges filed this week.

The nuclear energy sector in the United States has been trying to keep its head above water − unable to compete with cheap shale gas and subsidized wind and solar power. So it has sought help from state governments, which have taken up legislation to reward nuclear for being a carbon-free source of energy. In the case of Ohio, it is home to FirstEnergy, which owns two nuclear power plants in the state and which asked lawmakers for such consideration.

Ohio’s lawmakers, like those from Connecticut, Illinois, New York and New Jersey, voted to save their nuclear power plants not just because they are reliable and clean but also because they employ thousands of people. In Ohio, it was a $1.3 billion bailout package. What the citizens of Ohio learned this week, however, is that $60 million in surreptitious payments were allegedly made to make that happen and part of that money went into the pockets of House Speaker Larry Householder.

FirstEnergy Solutions, now known as Energy Harbor, is the nuclear unit within FirstEnergy Corp.

According to the Energy and Policy Institute, this is the company which owned the nuclear assets that Householder helped to bailout “and which FirstEnergy spun off in bankruptcy restructuring.”

Energy Harbor says that it will cooperate fully with the investigators, although it is not named in the criminal complaint. However, it is likely the entity that prosecutors refer to as ‘Company A’ − the one that made the $60 million in payments to Speaker Householder’s ‘Generation Now’ fund so that it could get the $1.3 billion in benefits. Prosecutors say that the money was paid over a three-year time frame beginning in 2017.

“This is likely the largest bribery, money laundering scheme ever perpetrated against the people of the state of Ohio,” US Attorney David DeVillers told a press conference. “This was bribery, plain and simple. This was a quid pro quo. This was pay to play.”

In the actual complaint, the prosecution alleges the payments were tantamount to “bags of cash” that went unregulated and unreported.

This is more than a public corruption scandal. It is a potential take-down of nuclear energy. If it is, the ramifications would be huge: According to the Nuclear Energy Institute, there are 96 nuclear reactors in 29 states. Altogether, they supply about 20 percent of the country’s electricity and about 55 percent of its carbon-free power. They operate at 92 percent capacity, more than any other type of power plant.
A heavy weight

Context is key. In the US, electricity grid operators are the ones to order up and dispatch the lowest-cost electricity sources − a system that invariably favors shale gas because it is so cheap relative to competing fuels. Existing generators that sell their electricity at market rates, can’t win. This fact, along with the high capital costs it takes to construct nuclear plants, has severely curtailed nuclear development in the US.

As a result, six nuclear plants have closed down since 2013 and several more have announced retirement dates over the next decade. The practical implications of moving away from nuclear and into natural gas have been greater CO2 emissions. When Southern California Edison closed its plant in 2013, such heat-trapping releases rose by 35 percent. To avoid further closures, state legislatures are subsidizing nuclear power by recognizing their carbon-free contributions.

But the American nuclear power sector has never learned the most basic lesson of Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station, which suffered a partial meltdown of its core in 1979 and which triggered an irrevocable backlash: get accurate information to the public in a timely manner. Secrecy does not work. In 2013, Southern California Edison said it would shutter its San Onofre Generating Station because of a small radiation leak. While the utility had maintained publicly that it only learned of the seepage in 2012 during routine maintenance, it was subsequently proven that it long knew that irregular vibrations could lead to leaks.

The utility then lost all credibility with regulators and the public.

Bad economics in combination with poor PR have been mounting for a long time. And the problems are bound to get worse now that FirstEnergy’s Energy Harbor is allegedly embroiled in this latest mess. And the industry can’t blame the environmental movement for this latest crisis − a movement concerned about storing radioactive nuclear waste and potential accidents.

“FirstEnergy’s successful campaign last year to secure a $1 billion bailout of its Ohio nuclear plants is at the center of a pay-to-play scandal that is rocking Ohio,”says Sandy Buchanan and Seth Feaste, of the Institute for Energy Economics & Financial Analysis. “The FBI would do well to take a closer look at all other state government-official involvement with FirstEnergy during the years when FirstEnergy was seeking a ‘legislative solution’ to save its nuclear plants.”

Where does the nuclear sector go from here? No doubt, the industry will separate itself from the corruption scandal now plaguing the state of Ohio. It will continue to maintain that global climate goals cannot be met without heavy participation from nuclear. But it will once again have to fight off the stench of secrecy and back-room politics − the same factors that have weighed it down since 1979. When the Ohio case is resolved, so too might be nuclear’s future in the US.

SPUTNIK 04:00 GMT 18.07.2020
'China Minimised Economic Impact While US Risks Becoming Zombie Country,' Academic Says
Chinese exports and imports grew in June more than projected. According to the data published by the National Bureau of Statistics of China, exports grew by 0.5% compared to the same period last year, while imports increased by 2.7%. These positive dynamics reflect that China is recovering from the crisis faster than expected.

This is the first time since the coronavirus outbreak when both China's exports and imports have started to grow. Most analysts expected that June would remain a month of recession: imports would drop by 10% and exports by 1.5%.

However, fiscal stimulus measures, as well as investments in infrastructure and real estate, yielded quick results.

Demand for imported rolled steel reached its peak for the last 33 months – it grew by 9.6%. Imports of crude oil also reached maximum values, climbing 9.9%. Here the demand was also spurred by Chinese oil refiners, who sought to fill their storage facilities while the oil price was low.

As a result, imports from some countries into the PRC increased at a double-digit rate. For example, June imports from the US to China increased by 11.3%, although in May this figure was in the negative zone.

Despite the pessimistic statements of some US politicians regarding the trade agreement, Chinese companies tried their best to fulfil the terms of the deal between the two countries that was concluded in January.

On the one hand, the easing of restrictive measures in response to the epidemic abroad contributed to the growth of exports. Many countries have begun to gradually open up their economies and resume business activities.

At the same time, increasing global demand for protective masks, gloves and other medical products and technological equipment also contributed to the increase in Chinese exports.

According to Chinese statistics, China's exports of medicines and pharmaceuticals increased by 23.6% in the second quarter. The sales of medical equipment to other countries soared by 46.4%.

China has undertaken various economic support measures. The authorities called on commercial banks to provide loans to support small businesses by at least 1 trillion yuan at low interest rates.

The People's Bank of China will buy back up to 400 billion yuan of these loans from commercial banks for one year. This will help commercial banks to cope with liquidity shortages.

Furthermore, 3.6 trillion yuan will be invested in the real sector, including in digital infrastructure, through the issuance of special government bonds as well as local government special-purpose bonds.

Finally, through various fiscal exemptions, as well as increasing the budget deficit to 3.6% of GDP, companies will attain an additional 3.3 trillion yuan of liquidity, which can also be used to restore business activities.

On the whole, China successfully coped with the first wave of the epidemic and was able to minimise economic losses, Jia Jinjing, assistant dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at the Renmin University of China, told Sputnik.

“China has effectively coped with the first wave of the epidemic now. It has managed to minimise the impact on the economy. Judging by domestic and foreign demand, we see that the measures are yielding results. However, the epidemiological situation remains uncertain, especially in some countries, including the US. Where the epidemic is likely to spread, the situation is very difficult to predict,” he said.

Despite the fact that China may have been able to minimise the impact of the epidemic for itself, due to China's involvement in the global value chain, the country is highly dependent on the situation in the world economy. At the same time, the US, as the expert notes, remains the main hidden threat to the global economy and finance.

“In terms of the financial or macro-level, the greatest latent risk comes from the US. The US has adopted a financial support programme that ends this month. It has not yet been announced what the next steps will be. But there are serious financial risks in the current situation that come from the US. In June, US federal revenues accounted for only one-fifth of expenditures. This means that the US will face problems servicing its own debt in the future. As debt accumulates, the US is becoming a zombie country, and this is a real danger for the global economy,” Jia Jinjing stressed.

The US has allocated $2.3 trillion to fight the current crisis, a record package of incentives. However, these anti-crisis measures are mainly limited to direct financial stimulation of the economy.

At the beginning of March, the Fed lowered the rates to zero and started implementing a policy of quantitative easing – this method was already practised during the 2008 crisis.

The quantitative easing – based on the lowest interest rates possible – is designed to sharply increase lending and, consequently, business activity and output growth. In reality, however, it turned out that cheap credit has led only to the expansion of the financial sector and speculative growth in the securities market.

From 2009 to 2019, the S&P 500 index grew by 370%. During the same period, GDP grew by less than 50%. The real sector, which supposedly provides most of the employment in most countries, was left behind, as evidenced by the accumulated structural problems in the American economy and society, such as high unemployment and growing social inequality.

China has taken into account the mistakes of the past, so the current measures taken by the Chinese authorities are aimed at maintaining the real sector. The practice has shown that huge financial incentives lead to economic imbalances and bubbles.

In fact, China's campaign against leverage, not completed so far, is precisely aimed at fighting the consequences of pumping the economy with financial doping in 2008.

But in today's situation countries can only jointly stabilise the global financial system and come out of the crisis caused by the pandemic with the least losses.

Russia adds $4.4 BILLION to forex reserves in just ONE WEEK
Russian gold and foreign currency holdings have increased to a total of $574.2 billion, according to the latest data released by the country’s central bank.

The international funds grew by $4.4 billion, or about 0.8 percent, in just one week (July 3-10). The regulator noted that the growth was driven by “positive revaluation.”

Statistics showed that since January 1 Russia boosted forex reserves by $20 billion. They were up by 18.3 percent last year.

The state's international reserves are highly liquid foreign assets comprising stocks of monetary gold, foreign currencies and Special Drawing Right (SDR) assets, which are at the disposal of the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) and the government. The current level of holdings is higher than the target of $500 billion set by the CBR several years ago.

Russia has been boosting the reserves for four years running. Last year, growth totaled nearly $86 billion, while 2018 and 2017 saw increases of around $33 billion and $55 billion respectively.

The country has been also reshaping its international holdings, cutting the share of the US dollar in favor of other currencies and gold. Last year, the CBR reported that the greenback share fell from 43.7 percent to 23.6 percent in 12 months from March 2018.

Several Injured After US Fighter Jets Come Close to Iranian Passenger Plane over Syrian Airspace
TEHRAN (FNA)- Several passengers were injured after two hostile US army fighter jets came close to an Iranian passenger plane over the Syrian airspace, forcing the pilot to make a sudden change of direction and altitude to avoid a collision. [+VIDEOS, PHOTOS]

Initial reports said two Israeli fighter jets approached a Mahan Air Tehran-Beirut flight over the Syrian sky in a highly risky move and the captain of the Iranian passenger plane was forced to make a sudden change of direction and altitude, causing several injuries.

While Western and Israeli media, including Reuters and Jerusalem Post, said the hostile aircraft were Israeli planes, the Israeli army denied the reports.

Yet, the captain of Mahan Air Flight No. 1152 later said the pilots of the two hostile planes have identified themselves as US army pilots during a radio contact.

A video posted by a reporter of Iran's state-run TV who was aboard the plane showed an F-15 fighter jet from the window of the plane and comments from a passenger who had blood on his face.

In a later interview from Beirut, the reporter said three passengers have been wounded during "the US planes' intentional move".

Syrian state news agency, SANA, said the incident happened in the country's sky over the "Al-Tanf border-crossing with Iraq". The US has a main base at Al-Tanf border-crossing which is supported by Ein Al-Assad airbase around 120km into Western Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said Iran's Ambassador to the UN Majid Takht-Ravanchi has informed the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of the incident, and warned that "in case of any incident for this plane on the way back home, the Islamic Republic of Iran will take the United States reponsible".

"A similar message has been sent to the Swiss ambassador to Tehran," the spokesman added. The Swiss embassy hosts the US interests section in Iran in absence of formal diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Mahan Air told FNA later that several passengers have been wounded during the incident and have been taken to a hospital in Beirut and others have evacuated the plane sound and safe.

It said the passenger jetliner has refueled to fly back to Iran.

At 21:30 GMT, flight tacking websites showed that the plane has crossed Syria's Al-Tanf border crossing with Iraq - the scene of the incident - on the way back home. At 22:30 GMT, reports said the jetliner has entered Iranian sky.

The Israeli air force has caused similar incidents over the Syrian sky in the last two years.

In February, an Airbus A320 passenger plane flying from Tehran to Damascus International Airport was forced to have an emergency landing at Russia's Hmeimim air base near Latakia in Northwest Syria after coming under fire from Syrian air defenses during an Israeli airstrike on the Syrian capital.

In an official account of the incident, Russia accused the Israeli army of using the civilian flight carrying 172 passengers as a shield during its air strikes on targets in Syria on February 7.

"The recourse to civilian aircraft as cover or to block a riposte by Syrian forces during military air operations has become characteristic of the Israeli air force," Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a statement a day later.

Israeli radars have "a clear view of the situation in the skies around Damascus airport", Konashenkov said, accusing Israel of "making a total mockery of the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians".

Less than a month later, two civilian airplanes bound for Qatar were used as cover by Israeli fighter jets launching missiles from Lebanese airspace against targets near the Syrian cities of Homs and Quneitra.

Syrian air defenses engaged incoming missiles shortly after midnight local time on March 5, both near Homs in Central Syria and Quneitra in the South, on the armistice line with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Following the attack, reports appeared that at least two flights – one passenger, one cargo – had to change course to avoid getting struck by air defense missiles.

The flights were tentatively identified as a Qatar cargo flight QR8294, bound for Doha from Basel, Switzerland. The other was QR419, a passenger plane that had taken off for Doha from Beirut, Lebanon, and made a loop around Tripoli before continuing its course South of Homs.

Passengers injured after ‘Israeli fighter jet’ buzzes Iranian airliner over Syria (VIDEOS)
Several passengers aboard an Iranian passenger plane have reportedly been injured after an encounter with an Israeli fighter jet over Damascus. Iranian media say the dangerous maneuver forced the airliner to rapidly drop altitude.

UPDATE: Tehran says AMERICAN, not Israeli fighter jets endangered & injured passengers of Iranian airliner over Syria

The incident, said to have taken place in the skies above the Syrian capital on Thursday, has been captured on videos published by the Iranian broadcaster IRIB.

The footage allegedly shows an Israeli fighter jet maneuvering dangerously close to the Iranian aircraft. Another clip shows passengers screaming as the cabin is visibly shaking.

Footage apparently captured later shows one man talking with blood running down his forehead, while another passenger is filmed lying prone on the floor.

Iranian media said the passenger plane was forced to rapidly drop altitude to avoid a mid-air collision, and that the chaotic scenes show the emergency descent and its aftermath.

The plane reportedly landed safely thereafter. It belongs to the Iranian private company Mahan Air.

There was no comment immediately available from the Israeli Defense Forces.

Coronavirus vaccine crucial for future of Tokyo Olympics, organizing committee says
The president of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee said the rescheduling of the Games once again was highly unlikely

TOKYO, July 22. /TASS/. The development of coronavirus vaccines and treatments will become a key factor in deciding whether to hold the Olympics and Paralympics next year, President of the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee Yoshiro Mori said in an interview with NHK.

"Whether the coronavirus can be brought under control is the most important factor. This applies to progress in the development of vaccines or treatments," he said, adding that the final decision is to be made by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Speaking about the possibility of once again rescheduling the Games, Mori said it was highly unlikely. He said the host cities of the Games have been already named until 2028, including the Beijing Winter Games in 2022 and the Paris Summer Games in 2024. "It is hardly possible that Paris would give up its turn to Tokyo," the Japanese official said.

The IOC (the International Olympic Committee) and the IPC (the International Paralympic Committee) announced on March 24 a decision to postpone for one year the tournaments in Japan due to the continuous COVID-19 spread. Yoshiro Mori announced on March 30 that the Summer Olympic Games in Japan next year will start on July 23 and the Summer Paralympic Games will begin on August 24. The Games’ name - Tokyo 2020 - will be preserved.

DB-Epstein lawyer shooting suspect worked for ‘CIA of Wall Street,’ did ‘men’s-rights activism,’ and had no clear personal motive

The attorney suspected of shooting Judge Esther Salas’s son and husband is being portrayed as a misogyny-crazed “anti-feminist,” but there seems to be more to the story, including links to the Deutsche Bank case Salas was hearing.

Roy Den Hollander, found dead of an allegedly self-inflicted gunshot wound in a car in the New York Catskills on Monday, has been fingered by authorities as the primary suspect in the shooting of Salas’s son and husband at their New Jersey home on Sunday.

Other than the FedEx uniform he was wearing when discovered and a package in his car addressed to the judge, however, it’s not clear what links him to the scene – or what his motive was, if indeed he was the shooter.

Den Hollander described himself on his website as a specialist in “anti-feminist litigation, investigations, and advice on general corporate matters.”

The media explanation suggested the lawyer hated Salas, whom he once dissed as a "lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama," enough to hunt her down five years later and attempt to kill her family. While he had a case before the judge in 2015 that didn't go well, that motive doesn't explain why he'd shoot her male relatives without trying to find her, or why he would then kill himself.

While the insults directed at Salas are harsh, they’re taken from a searing self-published manuscript riddled with casual misogyny directed against multiple women – chiefly his Russian ex-wife, whom he refers to as a “Russian mafia moll,” a “prostitute,” and a “striper [sic], call girl, pimp, money launderer, and drug smuggler for the Russian mafia.” He even credits the woman with turning him from a “stupid frigging fool” susceptible to female trickery into the “anti-Feminazi” lawyer he subsequently became.

His own mother isn’t spared either – he dedicates the book to her, along with hopes that she “burn[s] in hell.”

As for Salas, Den Hollander landed in her court challenging the male-only draft policy of the US Army. According to his book, the attorney “wanted to ask the Judge out, but thought she might hold [him] in contempt.” While he disapproved of her handling of the case, he’d soon moved on to bigger things, suing several news reporters (including NBC’s Chuck Todd and Katy Tur and the New York Times’ David Brooks) for allegedly violating RICO statutes by publishing “fake news” about then-candidate Donald Trump.

Salas seemed all but forgotten – if anything, Den Hollander claimed to understand her motivation for dragging her feet on his case, suggesting she wanted to move up to a higher court and thus couldn’t make any decisions that could be framed as political. There are zero hints in the manuscript the attorney was nursing a five-year grudge.

Not mentioned in the sensationalistic media coverage of Den Hollander’s past is the lawyer’s stint with Kroll Associates, a shadowy firm with ties to US and Israeli intelligence. Known informally as the “private CIA,” Kroll’s ranks were stacked with former agents of the CIA, FBI, Mossad, and MI6. A member of the Bush family sat on its advisory board before that was dissolved in 1991, and then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton hired the firm during his first presidential campaign that same year. Den Hollander officially worked for Kroll from 1999 to 2000, but given that the company has long worked closely with lawyers, his relationship with it may have begun (or continued) in an unofficial capacity.

Given that Judge Salas was assigned to a lawsuit by Deutsche Bank investors against the firm less than a week before her son and husband were shot, Kroll’s connections with that bank are also noteworthy – and absent from any media speculation on Den Hollander’s motives.

After leaving Kroll Associates in 2008, founder Jules Kroll launched Kroll Bond Rating Agency, a credit rating agency that has become something of a second home for high-ranking Deutsche Bank staff, employing over half a dozen VP-level and above staff. The cozy “revolving door” relationship has seen KBRA vociferously defend Deutsche Bank in the press against allegations of wrongdoing – no matter how well-founded.

The suit in Salas’s court alleged the bank had failed to vet “risky” clients like Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious (and now deceased) pedophile suspected of having his own rather extensive ties to Israeli and US intelligence.

According to Vanity Fair, Kroll himself was hired by newspaper baron and Israeli spy Robert Maxwell – father of now-imprisoned alleged Epstein madam Ghislaine Maxwell – to uncover “people out to get him, to destroy his empire, to cripple him financially, and to destroy his life and business in any way they could.” Maxwell died under mysterious circumstances – also officially declared suicide, despite considerable evidence to the contrary – before he could compile the “memorandum of suspicions and unexplained events” he planned to send Kroll, the magazine claimed.

If the shooting and apparent attempt on Salas’s life are indeed linked to the Deutsche Bank case, Hollander’s subsequent “suicide” would be far from the first suspicious death surrounding Epstein and his circle of high-flying associates. In addition to the well-connected pedophile’s own infamous jailhouse suicide, performed during that crucial window of time when his guards happened to be sleeping and the surveillance cameras on the tier where he was housed were malfunctioning, his personal banker at Deutsche Bank supposedly did away with himself back in November.

Thomas Bowers, head of the firm’s Private Wealth Management Division from 2012 to 2015, was discovered hanging from a rope in his New York home before Thanksgiving, just as FBI agents were hoping to interview him about the loans he’d approved to Epstein and his various shell companies. Epstein had followed Bowers to Deutsche Bank in 2013, where – despite his allegedly defaulting on some $25 million in loans from Citigroup – Bowers secured further high-risk loans and credit lines for the convicted sex offender. Bowers was said to have visited Epstein’s private island and attended events at his New York home.

Federal authorities were quick to declare Den Hollander’s death a suicide, leaking to the press that he’d shot himself before his name was even officially released, upon finding the lawyer dead of a gunshot wound. Given that foul play is the rule, rather than the exception, in the circles in which Epstein moved, the shooting at Salas’s home would seem to merit further investigation.

‘Anti-feminist’ lawyer identified as suspect in deadly shooting at federal judge’s home
Federal authorities identified a self-described “anti-feminist” lawyer found dead Monday as the “primary subject” in a shooting at a federal judge’s New Jersey home that killed the jurist’s son and left her husband badly injured.

U.S. District Judge Esther Salas was not harmed in the Sunday shooting, which the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and local authorities continue to investigate. The FBI and the U.S. attorney’s office in New Jersey identified the dead suspect as Roy Den Hollander. Speaking on the condition of anonymity to discussion an ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials said his body was found in Sullivan County, N.Y., about a two-hour drive from the scene of the shooting. The lawyer appeared to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, one official said.

Hollander gained a level of notoriety having sued over ladies’ night drink specials, which he claimed were discriminatory. He also had a years-long case before Salas in which he was contesting the government’s refusal to allow women to register for the military draft.

Deutsche Bank Investors Sue Over Epstein Ties, Stock Drops
COURT: D.N.J.

COMPANY INFO: Deutsche Bank AG (Bloomberg Law Subscription)

Deutsche Bank AG allegedly misled investors about anti-money-laundering deficiencies and didn’t “properly monitor” customers it considered “high risk,” such as Jeffrey Epstein, investors said in New Jersey federal district court.

The bank didn’t tell investors it hadn’t fixed disclosure control problems and wasn’t keeping an appropriate eye on clients like convicted sex offender Epstein and two other banks involved in past financial misconduct scandals, investors alleged Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Adding Epstein as a client in 2013 “was a critical mistake and should never have happened,” Deutsche Bank said in a July 7 message to staff. A bank spokesperson told Bloomberg News it had spent almost $1 billion to improve AML controls.

The bank’s share price fell 4.49% May 13 after news broke that the Federal Reserve had criticized its U.S. operations, including its AML and other control procedures, the investors said. The share price dropped 1.31% July 7 after New York’s state financial services department fined Deutsche Bank $150 million for “neglecting to flag numerous questionable transactions from accounts associated with Epstein,” Danske Estonia, and FBME Bank, the would-be class complaint said.

Deutsche Bank “signaled to investors” in 2017 that its then-new, now-departed general counsel would “further ensure” its “mitigation of its prior AML and other control function failures,” the complaint said. The bank touted its AML remediation efforts in subsequent Securities and Exchange Commission filings, the investors said.

The bank warned investors of “generic, boilerplate” control risks but didn’t disclose “relationships with, and lax monitoring of, customers” like Epstein that Deutsche Bank had “itself deemed to be high risk,” the complaint said.

Deutsche Bank declined to comment on the new suit Thursday but said it had offered help to law enforcement immediately after Epstein’s arrest. “We have been fully transparent and have addressed these matters with our regulator, adjusted our risk tolerance and systematically tackled the issues,” a spokesperson told Bloomberg Law.

“Our reputation is our most valuable asset and we deeply regret our association with Epstein,” the Deutsche Bank spokesperson said.

‘We had Clinton, we had everything’: ABC’s ‘Epstein coverup’ exposed by ‘p***ed’ news anchor in Project Veritas leak
ABC News knew the full extent of Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes three years ago, but a combination of orders from above and threats from those implicated killed the story before it ever got to air, leaked footage shows.

In a video clip released by conservative group Project Veritas on Tuesday, NBC News anchor Amy Robach is caught on a “hot mic” speaking to colleagues at the news desk. Robach reveals that she had been contacted by Virginia Roberts (Giuffre), who alleges Epstein used her as a sex slave, and pimped her out to his powerful friends, including Britain’s Prince Andrew.

“I’ve had this interview with Virginia Roberts...we would not put it on the air,” Robach says on camera. “First of all, I was told ‘who’s Jeffrey Epstein.’ Then the Palace found out that we had her whole allegations about Prince Andrew and threatened us a million different ways.”

She told me everything. She had pictures, she had everything. It was unbelievable what we had. We had Clinton, we had everything.

Former President Bill Clinton was among those who traveled multiple times on Epstein’s private jet, dubbed the “Lolita Express.” As well as Clinton and Prince Andrew, Robach claims that lawyer Alan Dershowitz was implicated in Roberts’ testimony.

Robach says that she tried to convince her bosses to air her story for three years, but “to no avail.”

“And now it’s all coming out and it’s like these new revelations, and I freaking had all of it. What we had was unreal.”

Epstein was found dead in his cell in New York’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in August, where he was awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. His death was ruled a suicide, with the city’s chief medical examiner determining the sex offender hung himself from his bunk bed in the cell.

Reports that Epstein had been taken off suicide watch two days earlier, and that the guards on watch left him unsupervised for longer than usual fuelled rumors that foul play was afoot. Epstein’s connections to high profile political and business figures led many to speculate that the mogul was murdered.

When New York’s former chief medical examiner, Dr. Michael Baden, claimed last month that Epstein’s wounds were more consistent with “homicidal strangulation” than suicide, the mystery was revived again, and the internet was flooded with “Epstein didn’t kill himself” memes and comments.

Robach said she believes “100 percent” Epstein was murdered.

Do I think he was killed? A hundred percent, yes I do. He made his whole living blackmailing people… There were a lot of men in those planes, a lot of men who visited that island, a lot of powerful men who came into that apartment.

When Epstein died, the case against him died too, as the financier was the sole defendant. A group of Epstein’s accusers and alleged victims have called on prosecutors to keep the case open, arguing that his associates - including girlfriend and alleged trafficking partner Ghislaine Maxwell - could also be culprits.

“Please, please finish what you have started ... we all know he did not act alone,” accuser Sarah Ransome told a court hearing in New York in August. “We are all survivors, and the pursuit of justice should not abate.”

‘How did you kill Jeffrey Epstein?’ Hillary Clinton bursts into laughter over dead body joke… again
In an appearance on the Daily Show, Hillary Clinton was asked to weigh in on her role as the arch nemesis of conservatives, and how – not if – she added Jeffrey Epstein to the “Clinton body count” theorized by conspiracy buffs.

“I have to ask you a question that has been plaguing me for a while, how did you kill Jeffrey Epstein?” host Trevor Noah asked on Thursday’s show, getting an outburst of laughter out of Clinton. “You seem to be behind everything nefarious, and yet you do not use [that power] to become president.”

Before she could spill the beans, Noah rolled out his next question, asking what it was like to be the “bogeyman of the right” and the subject of countless internet conspiracy theories.

“Well, it’s a constant surprise to me … because the things they say – and now, of course, it’s on steroids with being online – are so ridiculous, beyond any imagination that I could have,” Clinton said.

They are so persistent in putting forth these crazy ideas and theories. Honestly, I don’t know what I ever did to get them so upset.

The more conspiracy-minded corners of Twitter were quick to give Clinton some ideas, however, with many skeptical commenters rushing to posit her role in Epstein’s death and other shadowy plots.

READ MORE: ‘Hanging does not cause these broken bones’: Epstein’s injuries more consistent with homicide, noted pathologist says

A number of theories centered on the Clinton family have emerged after the financier’s demise, intensified by reports that he was a personal friend to Bill Clinton. Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in August, where he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges. While officials ruled the death a suicide, pathologist Michael Baden questioned that conclusion earlier this week, suggesting Epstein’s autopsy results more closely resembled a murder.

Some netizens mused that the Clinton conspiracy had compromised the Daily Show host as well, or even put his life in danger, even though Noah “1000% ... asked her permission to ask [the Epstein question] beforehand.”

Clinton’s hysterical laughter over a dead body at the Daily Show was not her debut in the world of comedy. While still in office in 2011, she told reporters a gut-buster about the brutal roadside execution of Libyan leader Mummar Gaddafi after a US-led bombing campaign ousted him from power, cackling:

We came, we saw, he died!

With Libya still a smoldering ruin plagued by violence some eight years after Gaddafi’s overthrow, the joke has not aged well, and might help explain what’s gotten Clinton’s critics so “upset.”

In another hilarious wisecrack during a 2010 State Department meeting on whistleblowing, Clinton allegedly asked department colleagues “Can’t we just drone this guy?” referring to Julian Assange, co-founder of anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks, which has published thousands of classified government documents. Though Clinton says she doesn’t remember the comment, she insisted “It would have been a joke, if it had been said.”

Notwithstanding another presidential run, perhaps a career in stand-up comedy is in the wings for the former secretary of state.

Epstein lived in a netherworld where normal rules don’t apply. How many more Epsteins are out there?
Forget how he died, the real mystery is how Jeffrey Epstein lived - committing acts that would get a normal person jailed, all while next to the world’s most-watched men. How did he create a protective bubble around himself?

Take, for example, Epstein’s financial career, the foundation for so much of his other criminal activity.

While doubts about his methods for obtaining wealth for his clients had been circulating on Wall Street for years, throughout that time he had been described, at face value, as a financier and a billionaire.

In the past several months we have discovered that he likely was no billionaire, and no one is sure whether he ever did conduct any legitimate business activities, or even where any of his money came from.

Yet, there was definitely big money involved, as is evidenced by superficially inexplicable multi-million dollar transactions percolating through a network of offshore accounts, and the very real luxury assets that he had accumulated.

But despite the United States’ reputation for employing the world’s most aggressive financial crimes agents, ready go well outside their borders, Epstein was never charged or even thoroughly investigated, while the world’s most reputable banks were happy to continue doing business with him until the past few months.

More glaring is the scope of his unpunished sex crimes.

This was not a relatively common-or-garden abuser like Harvey Weinstein, extracting sexual favors from adult women he had power over in a string of hotel room encounters.

Instead, Epstein was apparently the operator of an international sex ring, involving hundreds of underage “slaves” picked off from the school and the mall, transported across international borders, with the knowledge of each other, and what must have been a great multitude of bystanders.

Yet, Epstein was caught likely decades after he started, handed a notoriously lenient punishment, and reportedly allowed to continue his lifestyle while swatting away lawsuits.

Throughout all this, the convicted sex offender seems to have been treated with an odd laissez-faire lenience by the media, which is so fascinated now, but with the exception of several dogged local journalists, didn’t seem bothered enough to get to the bottom of who Epstein really was.

Even if Epstein hadn’t been a larger-than-life character, a close associate of formerly the most powerful man in the world, and his wife vying to fill the same position, not to mention a friend of Prince Andrew and Woody Allen, should have been a treasure trove for an ambitious investigator.

Yes, some of the allegations may have been difficult to prove, and journalists can’t be expected to sneak into the cargo hold of the Lolita Express, but at least since 2005 there has been solid ground on which to build a story. In a world where a single #MeToo article can destroy a career, Epstein was indulged like a disgraced Gatsby, holding court for New York Times journalists and boasting about his links to Mohammed bin Salman.

The greatest temptation for many now is to write this off as a conspiracy. That Epstein was a protected man due to his connection to the Clintons, that he was a front and a fixer for the CIA or Mossad, that anyone who got in his way, from investigators and prosecutors to journalists, was paid or warned off, perhaps blackmailed.

All other than Alec Baldwin should take a breath here, and now wait as more facts are likely to emerge, not least about Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s currently hard-to-locate partner, whose name has flashed up again and again. Though anyone hoping that a fully-formed color-coded scheme with arrows, circles and lists of crimes will ever emerge is likely fooling themselves.

But to me, a possibly more terrifying discovery is that there was no conspiracy, as such.

That simply through the power granted by his wealth and connection multiplied by the ability to lead an international lifestyle simply put Epstein outside the reach of the normal legal and societal constraints.

We already assume that plutocrats, the political elite, and celebrities live by different rules. But we are not talking about normal rich people indulgences: the yachts, butlers, and London basement pools.

This is Bond villain-level stuff. A private island with a secret temple. Plans to “seed” DNA into scores of women. Engaging top scientists for transhumanist studies to create a new super race.

If we’d learned that instead of grooming young women, Epstein’s hobby was transporting and hunting homeless people, would we be any more surprised? Would he have found it that much harder to get away with it?

We can tell ourselves that Jeffrey Epstein was a one-off, a uniquely cunning and depraved psychopath with the right connections. But it seems equally plausible that this opulent, global and lawless netherworld is capable of hiding other depraved transgressors, less publicity-hungry, and more dangerous still in their intentions.

The job is to try and stop them now before they die in a New York jail cell, leaving behind a trail of victims. But who has the guts for it?

US Comedian ‘Gets Death Threats’ After Trump Retweets His Jeffrey Epstein-Clinton Conspiracy Theory
Jeffrey Epstein’s death in a prison cell over the weekend has multiple conspiracy theorists questioning the decision to take him off suicide watch, just a week after he apparently tried to take his own life.

Terrence K. Williams, an American actor and comedian, says he started receiving death threats after President Donald Trump retweeted his conspiracy theory suggesting a Clinton connection in Jeffrey Epstein’s death.

“Ever since President Trump retweeted me, people have been sending me death threats, threatening me every single day, telling me I better watch my back,” Williams said in a video posted on Twitter.

He accompanied the clip with screenshots of messages he had purportedly received, saying “You’re next” and threatening to rape him.

Williams, a vocal Trump supporter, earlier made a video suggesting that Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary Clinton, are behind Epstein’s death because the late financier and registered sex offender “had information” on the ex-president.

Donald Trump disseminated this unfounded claim on Twitter, and the clip has been viewed by 5.4 million people so far. Trump later stood by his decision to repost the apparent conspiracy theory, describing Williams as a “very respected conservative pundit”.

Williams says that Facebook is now investigating whether his claims about the Clintons qualify as fake news.

“I am a comedian,” he maintained. “How can you fact-check a joke? I have never in my life heard about someone fact-checking a joke. What happened to free speech?” he inquired, asking Donald Trump to step in.

“They are coming after conservatives and Trump supporters because 2020 is around the corner and they’re trying to shut me down.”

He also encouraged users to support him by using the hashtag #ProtectTerrenceKWilliams, which is now among the top trending on Twitter.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Computers Seized in FBI Raid of His Luxury Home in the Caribbean (Video)
The raid comes as part of the FBI’s probe into former financier Jeffrey Epstein’s apparent suicide at in a New York City prison where he had been held ahead of his pending trial; he was charged with the sex trafficking of minors. The 66-year was found dead in his top security cell on 10 August.

The FBI has seized computer equipment from the late accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s mansion, which is located on a private island in the Caribbean.

Drone footage obtained by the CNBC showed at least two computer desktops and an Apple computer packaged and marked for transport during an FBI raid of 70-acre Little St. James Island, which was owned by Epstein.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHP2xW6IucU

Taking part in Monday’s raid were officials from the New York Police Department (NYPD), who are members of the FBI New York Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force.

CNBC cited an unnamed NYPD spokeswoman as saying that “the NYPD is a partner in the task force with the FBI that led to the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein last month”.

“The case remains an active and ongoing investigation, and the NYPD continues to work alongside the FBI in investigating leads − including at Epstein’s estate in the Virgin Islands. The NYPD declines further comment on an ongoing investigation,” the spokeswoman added.

The New York Post in turn quoted unnamed sources as saying that the FBI is in search for evidence to confirm claims by hundreds of women who accuse Epstein of sexually abusing them when they were underage girls.

Earlier, President Donald Trump demanded a “full investigation” into the circumstances of Epstein's death, while Attorney General William Barr lambasted the Metropolitan Correctional Centre, saying that there were “serious irregularities” at the facility, and that he was “appalled” after hearing about Epstein's death.

“We will get to the bottom of what happened, and there will be accountability,” Barr pointed out.

US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani told Fox News that he doesn’t like conspiracy theories and that police should not engage in them because “we need to know the facts”.

He added that “the whole thing is completely incredible” to him, singling out many potential ways in which Epstein could have been killed.

“He could kill himself, prisoners could kill him because they don't like alleged perverts [...] And don't like people who might cooperate,” Giuliani claimed.

The remarks followed those by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio who said that Epstein’s death “boggles the imagination” and that “this series of events is way too convenient”.

Speaking to the news network NY1 on Tuesday, he suggested that all those involved could say that they were watching Epstein “like a hawk” and that they were going to “take every measure to make sure nothing happens to him or he doesn’t do anything to himself”.

Epstein was arrested on multiple counts of alleged sex trafficking and abuse of minors last month, with the Justice Department starting an investigation into his case in early 2019, ruling the non-prosecution agreement which followed his 2008 plea deal and 18-month prison sentence unconstitutional. He apparently committed suicide at a Metropolitan Correctional Centre cell on 10 August.

Epstein Kept 'Meticulous' Diary Full of Secrets of His Powerful Friends as 'Insurance', Media Claims

Jeffrey Epstein apparently committed suicide in his New York jail cell on 10 August − just hours after unsealed court documents named some of the world's famous and powerful people as allegedly being involved in his purported child sex trafficking scheme.

The alleged secrets of Jeffrey Epstein's friends could haunt them even after his death as the disgraced American financier is said to have kept a personal diary detailing his interactions with the rich and famous, including UK Prince Andrew and Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite and media heiress, as an "insurance policy", The Mirror speculated, citing unnamed sources.

"All Jeff ever had he bought, including his friends. He used his wealth to buy buddies and then bestow his money on those he courted. Jeff knew his relationships with the rich and famous brought him protection. He kept a diary in meticulous detail in case he ever needed it. One former congressman said there are a lot of people 'breathing a huge sigh of relief' now Jeff is dead. They should hold their breath for a long time to come. It ain't over", one source said.

The claim follows reports that court documents from the sex trafficking trial of Epstein revealed that Prince Andrew was named in a 2015 lawsuit, in which the plaintiff, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, alleged that the son of Queen Elizabeth II groped her when she was a minor at the financier's New York mansion.

Giuffre sued Maxwell, who was accused of being the "madame" for Epstein's professed underage girl sex trafficking ring, and claimed that she was used as a "sex slave" to perform acts with multiple famous men, including the Duke of York.

Buckingham Palace has dismissed "any suggestion of impropriety with underage minors" as "categorically untrue", saying that the case relates to legal proceedings in the United States, "to which The Duke of York is not a party".

Prince Andrew, who's eighth in line to the British throne, wasn't charged with anything back in 2015.

The case was settled out of court two years later, but documents still state "an undisputed fact that multiple witnesses deposed in this case" have testified that Maxwell "operated as convicted paedophile Epstein's procurer of underage girls".
Epstein's 'Apparent Suicide'

Jeffrey Epstein was found hanged in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Lower Manhattan, where he was detained pending trial on child sex trafficking charges, on Friday night.

US Attorney General William Barr has ordered the FBI and the Federal Inspector to investigate his "apparent suicide" since it happened just days after he was taken off suicide watch. New York City's chief coroner, meanwhile, is convinced that the billionaire took his own life, but is waiting for the results of the autopsy.

The timing of Epstein's suicide and mysterious circumstances surrounding his death, including reports that prison guards failed to follow procedure and check on inmates every 30 minutes the night he killed himself, has given rise to multiple conspiracy theories, including suggestions that the financier believed someone had tried to kill him.

His apparent suicide came three weeks after he was found unresponsive in his prison cell with mysterious marks on his neck. It was not immediately clear whether they were self-inflicted, or he was assaulted in his cell, but he was reportedly put on suicide watch until 29 July.

The convicted sex offender was arrested on 6 July over numerous allegations of sex trafficking underage girls in the early 2000s at his New York and Florida estates. The 66-year-old, who served a 13-month jail term on prostitution-related charges involving minors in 2008, pleaded not guilty.

Minister says Epstein’s French connections must be probed despite prison death
Sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s connections in France need to be investigated by the nation’s law enforcement, the French minister for gender equality said. Epstein died in US custody last week by alleged suicide.

The US investigation into Epstein’s alleged sexual abuses of minors was undermined by the disgraced financier’s death in a US jail. But it uncovered enough evidence involving France that merit a national investigation, Gender Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa said in a statement on Monday. Such a probe would be “fundamental for the victims” and will also help prevent sexual predation in the future, she argued.

Epstein died in what the authorities called an apparent hanging suicide while being held in custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York. He was charged with sexual exploitation of minors as young as 14.

The death may be a relief for many powerful people around the world, who allegedly partook in Epstein’s sexual predation dating back to at least 2002. Previously he was convicted for paying for sex with an underage girl and given an 18-month prison sentence.

Report: Epstein Wasn't on Suicide Watch at Time of His Death
TEHRAN (FNA)- Disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was not on suicide watch at the time of his death, according to multiple reports on Saturday, raising questions about his time in federal custody while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Several people familiar with the investigation told NBC News that Epstein was not under supervision when he killed himself in his cell in a Manhattan federal prison.

His body was found early Saturday morning and he was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, officials announced.

The New York Times, citing a prison official, reported that Epstein was in a special unit in the prison with extra security but wasn't specifically under suicide watch.

Epstein was behind bars at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan over charges of sexually trafficking minors, to which he had pleaded not guilty.

His suicide comes hours after testimony from one of his accusers was made public in unsealed court documents, detailing the inner workings of his alleged operation.

Epstein was reportedly placed on suicide watch after an incident in late July when he was found unconscious in his jail cell with injuries to his neck.

Attorney General William Barr said in a statement Saturday he was “appalled” by Epstein’s death and that the Justice Department's watchdog would open an investigation along with the FBI.

“Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered. In addition to the FBI’s investigation, I have consulted with the Inspector General who is opening an investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Epstein’s death,” he added.

Epstein’s death: A mystery that may end up rivaling JFK assassination?
While the abrupt death of Jeffrey Epstein has triggered an avalanche of conspiracy theories, many reasonably wonder: What exactly did he know and how could such a high-profile inmate, supposed to be on suicide watch, end up dead?

Epstein was found unconscious at around 6:30am Saturday inside his New York prison cell, and was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had been on suicide watch after an alleged attempt to take his life on July 23, but was apparently transferred back to his cell about a week later.

Thus, the Metropolitan Correctional Center’s management, and the lapses of the American prison system in general, must share the blame for Epstein’s death, believes Julio Rivera, editorial director for Reactionary Times.

“He was taken off the suicide watch. This is wholly unacceptable based on the grotesque nature, and the charges, and the amount of the alleged victims,” Rivera told RT, though she admitted that prisons hardly have enough funds or manpower to keep suspects on constant suicide watch, no matter how high profile their cases.

This is a systematic failure by the American bureau of prisons.

“In the US, at least in federal custody, where this person was, and you’re on suicide watch – you are constantly video, audio monitored and in addition, you have one or more people standing outside your cell,” said political analyst Charles Ortel.

With Epstein now dead, what exactly could he tell the court and how many powerful friends of his might have had a sigh of relief on Saturday is a question that now bothers not only conspiracy theorists. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called Epstein’s death “way too convenient,” and wondered how many “other millionaires and billionaires were part of the illegal activities that he was engaged in?”

The FBI has launched a probe into Jeffrey Epstein's death, while the federal prosecutor has vowed to continue the investigation into his possible accomplices. But Epstein's case has now turned into much more than an internal US issue, and the entire world “deserves to really understand what happened there,” Ortel believes, noting however that the full truth may never be known.

This is a mystery that will end up rivaling the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Harold James: Today’s America bears striking similarities to pre-collapse USSR

Harold James: Today’s America bears striking similarities to pre-collapse USSR
By Harold James, Professor of History and International Affairs at Princeton University and a senior fellow at the Center for International Governance Innovation. A specialist on German economic history and on globalization, he is a co-author of The Euro and The Battle of Ideas, and the author of The Creation and Destruction of Value: The Globalization Cycle, Krupp: A History of the Legendary German Firm, and Making the European Monetary Union.
Like the Soviet Union in its final years, the United States is reeling from catastrophic failures of leadership and long-suppressed socioeconomic tensions that have finally boiled over.

For the rest of the world, the most important development is that the hegemony of the US dollar may finally be coming to an end.

The Soviet Union was fertile ground for political jokes, which featured as prominently in the culture as late-night comedy does in the United States. According to one popular story, a young man who shouted in Red Square that the decrepit Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev was an idiot ended up being sentenced to 25.5 years in prison – six months for insulting the Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, and 25 years for revealing state secrets.

The Trump administration’s furious reaction to a new book by former National Security Advisor John Bolton has followed a similar script. The book is considered dangerous not so much because it insults Donald Trump as because it reveals that the president is deeply incompetent and “stunningly uninformed.” If it wasn’t obvious already, the whole world now knows that the US lacks any strategic orientation or coherent executive leadership.

In fact, many aspects of America’s current annus horribilis recall the final years of the Soviet Union, starting with the intensification of social and political conflict. In the Soviet case, long-suppressed ethnic rivalries and competing national aspirations quickly bubbled to the surface, pushing the entire country toward violence, secession, and disintegration. In the US, Trump’s response to nationwide protests against racism, police brutality, and inequality has been to stoke further the country’s historic racial divide. And, like statues of Lenin during the collapse of the Soviet empire, statues of Confederate leaders are being toppled just about everywhere.

Another parallel concerns the economy. The Soviet Union had a large, complicated planning and resource-allocation apparatus that attracted the society’s best-educated people, only to consign them to unproductive and frequently destructive tasks. The US has Wall Street. To be sure, America’s vast financial-services sector is not the equivalent of Gosplan (the Soviet State Planning Commission), but it does frequently extract value rather than create it, and thus will inevitably be part of any debate about the allocation of resources.

Up until the moment the Soviet system collapsed, very few thought it could actually happen. In assessing the state of the American system, it is important to remember that economists are not very good at prediction. The entire discipline relies on extrapolating from contemporary conditions on the assumption that the underlying fundamentals of what is being analyzed will not change. Knowing full well that this is an unrealistic and absurd assumption, economists often emulate medieval theologians by dressing up their prognoses in arcane language and jargon. One doesn’t need to know Latin to invoke ceteris paribus (“other things being equal”) as the premise of one’s forecasts.

Given this standard practice, we should pay close attention to long-run counter-intuitive forecasts that actually are borne out. In the late 1960s, the economist Robert A. Mundell made three predictions: that the Soviet Union would disintegrate; that Europe would adopt a single currency; and that the dollar would retain its status as the dominant international currency. Considering that the par-value system (gold standard) collapsed soon thereafter, triggering a depreciation of the dollar, these looked like wild predictions. But Mundell turned out to be right on all three counts.

But the circumstances to which the dollar owes its longstanding hegemony are now changing. The Covid-19 pandemic is driving a more digitalized form of globalization. While the cross-border movement of people and goods plummets, information is flowing like never before, ushering in an increasingly weightless economy.

Moreover, for the past three and a half years, the Trump administration has been inviting an eventual backlash against its weaponization of the dollar for political ends. Financial and secondary sanctions were highly effective in their original form, when they were directed against small, isolated bad actors like North Korea. But their more extensive deployment against Iran, Russia, and Chinese companies has proved counterproductive. Not only Russia and China but also Europe have quickly taken steps to develop alternative mechanisms for international payments and settlement.

Non-state digital payments systems are also undergoing rapid development, particularly in places where the state is weak, distrusted, or otherwise lacking credibility. The payments revolution will likely occur fastest in poor countries, such as in Africa or some former Soviet republics. New digital technologies already offer these societies the means to move from poverty and institutional underdevelopment to institutional complexity and the chance of innovation and prosperity.

The dollar’s longstanding centrality reflected global demand for a deep, liquid safe asset. But that condition will disappear when alternative safe assets emerge, particularly if they are backed by non-state providers. More to the point, the dollar’s long reign over the international financial system depended on the US remaining economically stable, financially credible, and culturally open. Now that the US system’s dysfunctions are being laid bare, the rest of the world may start to question its basic competence and state effectiveness.

The Covid-19 crisis is a case in point. In terms of the number of cases and deaths, and the effectiveness of containing the virus, the US has performed poorly relative to most other countries – and all other developed countries. Under President Donald Trump, America has become an international embarrassment.

Under these conditions, the dollar won’t be able to buy as much internationally as it once did, and it may even start to look like the old Soviet ruble, even if there is a dramatic change in leadership and strategy. After all, Mikhail Gorbachev did not immediately succeed Brezhnev, and by the time he came to power and introduced perestroika, it was too late. The malaise had become terminal.

Turkey is not done killing and slaughtering Armenians, as if over 1 million Armenians killed on their hands during WW1 wasn’t enough, they are now shipping Syrian rebel terrorists to Azerbaijan to fight the Armenians and also shipping armed drones.

Ankara, Baku slam media rumors of Turkey redeploying mercenaries from Syria to Azerbaijan
Spokesmen for the Azerbaijani side also refuted these allegations, telling TASS it was "false information and a fake"
TASS, July 19. Media reports about Turkey sending Syrian armed opposition militants to Azerbaijan are utter falsehoods, a Turkish official told TASS on Sunday, commenting on reports from the Firat Kurdish news agency.

"It has nothing to do with reality," he insisted.

An official Azerbaijani spokesperson also refuted these allegations, telling TASS it was "false information and fake."

The Firat News Agency reported earlier that Turkey was allegedly looking at sending units of the Free Syrian Army to Azerbaijan. No official statements on this matter were cited however.

Six Types of COVID-19 Identified by Scientists in 'Major' Breakthrough for Treatment
TEHRAN (FNA)- Scientists have identified six distinct types of COVID-19 - each with a specific collection of symptoms - in a breakthrough that could help doctors predict which patients are most at risk.

The different forms of the disease are believed to determine its severity among those infected - and whether they are likely to need respiratory support in hospital.

Those behind the study, led by researchers from King's College London, say it will have major implications on treatment decisions during a potential second wave of coronavirus and could "save lives".

Although a continuous cough, fever and loss of smell are usually highlighted as the three key symptoms of the illness, data gathered from around 1,600 users of the COVID Symptom Study app in the UK and US shows that people can experience a wide range of different effects.

These can include headaches, muscle pains, fatigue, diarrhoea, confusion, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and more.

And researchers concluded that which of the six main cluster of symptoms each infected person suffered tended to indicate how quickly the disease would progress and how ill they were likely to get.

They presented the six distinct clusters - or "types" of COVID-19 - as follows:

'Flu-like' with no fever - Headache, loss of smell, muscle pains, cough, sore throat, chest pain, no fever.

'Flu-like' with fever - Headache, loss of smell, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.

Gastrointestinal - Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.

Severe level one, fatigue - Headache, loss of smell, cough, fever, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue.

Severe level two, confusion - Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain.

Severe level three, abdominal and respiratory - Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle pain, shortness of breath, diarrhoea, abdominal pain.

They said patients' outcomes varied significantly - from mild flu-like symptoms or a simple rash to severe disease or death.

The six clusters of symptoms - which emerged at similar points in the disease's progression - were identified by the researchers along with the likely severity that each tended to correspond with.

And the team behind the study said that while some of the listed symptoms - such as confusion, abdominal pain and shortness of breath - had not been widely linked to COVID-19, they were hallmarks of its most severe forms.

It was discovered that only 1.5% of people with cluster 1, 4.4% of people with cluster 2 and 3.3% of people with cluster 3 required breathing support.

But these figures were 8.6%, 9.9% and 19.8% for clusters 4, 5 and 6 respectively - while nearly half of the patients in cluster 6 ended up in hospital, compared with just 16% of those in cluster 1.

The researchers said that, in general, people with clusters 4, 5 or 6 tended to be older and frailer, and were more likely to be overweight and have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or lung disease than those with type 1, 2 or 3.

Having identified the different clusters, they then combined information about patients' age, sex, BMI and pre-existing conditions with symptoms each gathered over just five days from the onset of the illness.

This allowed them to devise a model which they say predicts more accurately - and, crucially, earlier - which cluster each patient falls into and how likely they are to require hospital treatment and breathing support.

Dr Claire Steves, from King's College London, said: "These findings have important implications for care and monitoring of people who are most vulnerable to severe COVID-19.

"If you can predict who these people are at day five, you have time to give them support and early interventions such as monitoring blood oxygen and sugar levels, and ensuring they are properly hydrated - simple care that could be given at home, preventing hospitalisations and saving lives."

And Sebastien Ourselin, professor of healthcare engineering at King's College London and senior author of the study, said the research was having "a profound impact on our understanding of the extent and impact of COVID-19".

Professor Tim Spector added that the findings showed the importance of people getting into the habit of using the app daily, "helping us to stay ahead of any local hotspots or a second wave of infections".
