Huge spike in deaths in England & Wales as Covid-19 linked to 1 in every 5 fatalities, suggesting UK is UNDERREPORTING
Covid-19 death tolls in England and Wales have shot up dramatically, with one in every five now linked to the coronavirus, while the UK government has been accused of underreporting fatalities among the elderly in care homes.

New data published on Tuesday by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) – which detail all deaths in hospitals and out in the community – including care homes – show that Covid-19 accounted for 21 percent of all fatalities in the week ending April 3, compared to just 4.8 percent of deaths the week before.

The staggering increase in registered deaths – up more than 5,000 in just one week – may suggest that official daily coronavirus figures published by the government may not have been an accurate reflection of the real numbers.

Of all coronavirus-related deaths registered up to April 3, just under 10 percent occurred in hospices, care homes and private homes, according to the ONS figures.

However, David Behan, the boss of one of Britain’s biggest nursing home operators HC-One, claims the number of Covid-19 deaths among elderly residents is a lot higher than has been officially reported by the UK government.

PM Boris Johnson’s administration claims the disease has been reported in one out of every eight UK care homes, but Behan has revealed that cases of the new coronavirus have been identified in 232 of his firm's homes – two-thirds of the total. 311 of his residents have died with confirmed or suspected Covid-19.

The UK government has come under fire from senior health and social care officials for not providing enough or adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their frontline workers.

Nadra Ahmed, Chair of the National Care Association, claimed on ITV’s GMB show on Tuesday that care homes are being charged huge amounts of money for PPE, which is “unsustainable.” Ahmed revealed that the UK government had not removed taxes such as VAT for the care sector like they have done for the National Health Service (NHS).

Britain is not on its own when it comes to claims of underreporting cases. Both the Netherlands and Austria have also become embroiled in accusations that they have been underestimating the true number of deaths and associated with Covid-19 and cases of the disease.

Figures published by the department for health and social care on Tuesday showed that 93,873 people in the UK had tested positive for the coronavirus in hospital, of which 12,107 had died.

The UK has entered its fourth week in lockdown with some other European nations such as Denmark and Spain planning to relax some of their Covid-19 suppression measures.

Italy Fines Over 40,000 People for Violating Quarantine During Easter 'Long Weekend'

GENOA (Sputnik) - Italy penalised more than 40,000 people over the long three-day Easter "weekend" for violating quarantine measures related to the COVID-19 emergency, according to Tuesday's Interior Ministry statistics.

On Monday, 13 April, on the so-called "Pasquetta", the day after Easter, which is a state holiday in Italy and is traditionally a barbecue day for Italians, sanctions were applied to a record number of people (16,545), the Interior Ministry's daily report for 14 April says.

First group of volunteers assembled as Russia prepares for human testing of Covid-19 vaccine
The initial human volunteers have been selected to test a Russian vaccine against the deadly new coronavirus in trials set to begin in late June. The project's chief developer is leading by example by taking his place among them.

Work on the biological preparation began in February at the Vector Institute, Russia’s leading virology and biotechnology research center. It's based in Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia. Earlier in April, researchers announced that the vaccine had successfully passed trials on mice and ferrets, with preparations for human testing in full swing.

The first stage will see 60 people participating, Rinat Maksyutov, Vector Institute’s general director, told Rossiya-1. Numerous people from Novosibirsk and other Russian regions have offered their services as volunteers.

The list of test subjects has already been put together, and some members of the team now working on the vaccine, including lead developer Ilnaz Imatdinov, are among the volunteers, Maksyutov revealed. The scientists stepped forward because “they are confident in the effectiveness and safety” of the agent they are preparing, he said.

The start of human trials doesn’t mean that Russia will get its Covid-19 vaccine instantly, as testing is a “very precise thing,” especially when it comes to humans, Sergey Netesov, former Vector deputy general director and head of its lab for 30 years, told RT.

The remedy is critical as there have been almost 13,600 coronavirus cases and 106 deaths registered in Russia already. The global death toll is 104,800 people and more than 1.7 million are infected with the highly contagious disease. Vaccines are also being developed by China, the US, and other countries.

“In principle, the [Russian] vaccine for mass consumption shouldn’t be expected to arrive earlier than September,” Netesov, who now heads the microbiology and virology laboratory at Novosibirsk State University, said.

The volunteers, who are “healthy people of between 22 and 28 years of age, both males and females,” must be under supervision for at least a month after the pharmaceutical is administered to them. And for the next 60 days, they have to remain in contact with the researchers and report any complications that may occur.

Russia records over 2,000 new Covid-19 cases in a SINGLE day
Since Saturday, 2,186 more people have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing Russia’s total coronavirus tally to 15,770, according to the government’s emergency team in charge of containing the growing epidemic.

The new figure drastically ups the curve, as only 1,667 new cases were recorded across the country the day before.

The bulk of the newly infected – 1,306 and 278 respectively – are in Moscow and the surrounding region, where the authorities have recently introduced electronic permits to control people’s mobility amid the quarantine. St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, has reported 69 cases.

US Military in South Korea Tests Guests for Coronavirus With... Apple Vinegar
The Daegu Garrison has introduced smell tests as an additional measure, apart from necessary gate checks for temperature and cough, as even those with mild symptoms have been found to showcase anosmia, or in other words, the loss of smell.
Military personnel stationed at the US Army Garrison Daegu, in South Korea are now asking people visiting the facilities to pass a sniff test and smell apple vinegar in order to be allowed in. They thereby try to identify people who might be carrying the new coronavirus as it has been claimed that losing a sense of smell is a common symptom of the disease.
"At Gate 4 Camp Walker today, we conducted random smell testing on personnel coming onto the installation using a new method of delivering−cotton swabs that are handed to each individual and immediately disposed of after testing” U.S.A.G. Daegu announced on the Garrison's Facebook page.

Chinese Arms to Help Nigeria Combat Terrorists

Chinese Arms to Help Nigeria Combat Terrorists
China and Nigeria are strengthening their military-technical cooperation: 17 Chinese armoured vehicles have been unloaded at the port of Lagos under a new contract signed in 2019. The contract, worth $152 million, was signed following a tender that was won by the China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation, known as Norinco.

The Nigerian newspaper This Day Live, citing the chief of policy and plans of the Nigerian Army Headquarters, Major General Lamidi Adeosun, notes that the China Ordnance Industries Group Corporation, known as Norinco, won the military tender because of the reliability of its equipment, as well as due to the fact that Chinese vehicles are equipped with the latest technology and weaponry.

The first batch of armoured vehicles delivered to Nigeria includes VT-4 tanks, a new generation of battle tanks with a range of over 500 kilometres, wheeled new generation self-propelled ST1 lightweight tanks, and 122mm SH2 self-propelled howitzers. Nigeria previously received the first set of spare parts and supplies for this equipment, which was delivered in 15 40-foot shipping containers.

According to the Nigerian newspaper, Chinese armoured vehicles are customised for the specific conditions in Nigeria. The weapons are primarily intended for use in the northeast of the country to combat attacks by the Boko Haram terror group. This is the region where Nigeria shares borders with Chad and Cameroon.

China's assistance in strengthening the technical capacity of the Nigerian Army shows the high level of interstate relations, says Liu Qinghai, a director of the Centre for African Economic Studies at the Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University.

“There are several reasons why China is chosen as a partner in military-technical cooperation in Africa. First of all, China offers an excellent price-quality ratio for its weaponry. For example, the VT-4 third-generation battle tank has high manoeuvrability, good protection and powerful weapons. These vehicles were exported to Thailand and were highly appreciated by the Royal Court. It can be said that they have good quality and moderate price”, the expert believes.

At the same time, China offers good after-sales service, timely delivery, and does not attach political conditions to a deal, Liu Qinghai notes.

“For example, China provides flexible maintenance services and trains Nigerian soldiers on how to operate the equipment. Chinese consultants also come to Nigeria to assist with training”, he adds.

The Chinese expert believes that military-technical cooperation between China and Nigeria has been successfully developing due to the friendly nature of Sino-Nigerian relations, noting that Nigeria is one of the friendliest African countries for China.

“According to the surveys, 70 percent of Nigerians have friendly feelings towards China and appreciate Sino-Nigerian cooperation. Nigeria has the largest Chinese language newspaper in Africa. The domestic market is dominated by Chinese goods, and for Nigerians, China is the most popular tourist destination. Cooperation between the two sides is mutually beneficial and extremely useful”, the expert concludes.

Speaking to Sputnik, Nikolai Shcherbakov, an analyst at the Centre for African Studies of the Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), says that China's participation in the rearmament of the Nigerian Army is logical as this process began long ago.

“The value of the new contract is not huge but it is a message of renewed commitment to cooperation. Chinese weaponry is of decent quality, its decisive advantage is its price. Nigeria cannot afford to buy expensive pieces of weaponry. Chinese weapons are cheaper than Western ones, but they are almost as effective. At the same time, they are easy to use and maintain”, the expert says.

Shcherbakov stresses that this is important given the specifics and level of training of the Nigerian government's military units, which are comprised mainly of contract soldiers.

“Nigeria sees an opportunity to strengthen internal security and public stability in its military-technical cooperation with China. Beijing, for its part, is interested in protecting its economic interests in Nigeria and maintaining its presence in the huge Nigerian market. It does not want to lose this market due to internal instability in that country. Nigeria is one example of how China operates in Africa. If it comes to a country, it will be solid and lasting”, the Russian expert notes.
Nigeria is one of the 18 countries in Africa that will receive medical supplies sent by China to help them fight the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. A Chinese company, China Air Cargo, delivered crucial and vital goods by charter on 6 April to Accra, Ghana's capital city, from where they are distributed to other countries.

The humanitarian cargo includes personal protective equipment, protective masks, medical protective suits, safety goggles, gloves, infrared thermometers, and ventilators. At the same time, a team of experts from China provides advice and guidance to Nigerian medical specialists.
