Plane caught fire mid-air, attempted to turn around: Iran issues initial report on Ukrainian airliner crash
A Ukrainian airliner that crashed near Tehran was on fire and tried to turn around before crashing, Iranian investigators have said in a preliminary report. Iran has invited all relevant parties to participate in the probe.

Eyewitnesses observed a fire on the Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 while it was still airborne, Iran's civil aviation organization noted. The aircraft attempted to return to Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport before crashing, killing all 176 people on board, the organization said. The Iranian investigators confirmed that no distress calls or messages were received from the pilot before the plane hit the ground.

Ali Abedzadeh, who leads the civil aviation organization, stated that all relevant countries have been invited to send representatives to help carry out the ongoing investigation into what caused Wednesday's crash.

His organization said that all of its findings would be published and publicly available.

Ukraine had initially issued a statement claiming that the crash was due to an engine fire, but later retracted the statement. President Volodymyr Zelensky said that his government was considering several possible causes of accident, but urged the public against speculating and spreading conspiracy theories. Kiev has already dispatched investigators to Iran, according to reports.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry revealed that the crash victims included 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainians, 63 Canadians, four Afghans, three Germans, three British nationals and 10 Swedes.

The crash occurred shortly after an Iranian missile attack on US bases in Iraq, prompting theories that Tehran may have accidentally shot down the plane. However, five security sources told Reuters that the initial assessment of Western intelligence agencies was that the aircraft had suffered from a mechanical malfunction.

Missile strike, terrorist attack, engine explosion among main versions on Boeing crash in Iran – Ukraine's Security Council

Kiev will establish if its airliner, which crashed near Tehran with 176 on board, was hit by a ‘Russian-made’ missile, collided with a drone or was targeted by terrorists, an official with Ukraine’s security council has said.

Ukraine has sent dozens of investigators to Iran to look at possible cause of the crash, including “an explosion inside the plane following a terrorist attack,” collision with an unmanned aerial vehicle or a direct hit by “a surface-to-air missile”, Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the security council, told Censor news outlet.

Kiev is now in talks with Tehran over getting access to the crash site, the official added. Investigators will search it for some “wreckage of a Russian-[made] Tor missile,” referring to allegations that popped up on social media.

That claim may not sit well with Iran’s preliminary findings it disclosed earlier in the day. The country’s civil aviation authority said the Boeing 737-800, operated by Ukraine International Airline, caught fire when it was airborne. Pilots tried to return to Imam Khomeini airport where they departed from, but to no avail. They made no distress calls in the middle of the emergency, it turned out.

Iran won’t hand over black box to the US, as Boeing offers help after Ukrainian airliner crashes near Tehran
Iran will not provide Boeing with the black box of a Ukrainian 737 that crashed near Tehran, the country’s civil aviation authority has said. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.

Ali Abedzadeh, head of the Iran Civil Aviation Organization, said that Tehran would carry out its own probe into the crash, adding that Ukrainian authorities will be allowed to be “present during investigations.”

He also said that it hadn’t yet been decided where the black box would be sent for analysis.Responding to the crash, Boeing said in a statement that it was ready to “assist in any way needed.”

A Boeing 737 operated by Ukraine International Airlines crashed shortly after taking off from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran earlier on Wednesday, killing all 176 people on board. Ukraine initially suggested that the accident was due to mechanical failure, but later scrubbed its statement.

The Ukrainian airline said the aircraft was “in excellent condition” before its last flight from Tehran to Kiev, Evgeny Dykhne, the company’s president, told reporters in Kiev. The plane, described as one of the “best” in the company’s fleet, had undergone an inspection just two days prior.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on the public to refrain from speculating about what may have caused the crash. Ukraine’s foreign minister confirmed that he had been in contact with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif, and that both nations had agreed to coordinate their efforts to determine what caused the “terrible” crash.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry revealed that among those killed in Wednesday’s crash were 82 Iranians, 11 Ukrainians, 63 Canadians, four Afghans, three Germans, three British nationals and 10 Swedes.

The cause of the passenger jet's crash, which killed all 176 people on board, remains unclear. Ukrainian authorities have already started an investigation

Early on 8 January, Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) Boeing 737-800 flight PS752 bound for Kiev, Ukraine crashed minutes after taking off from Tehran's Khomeini Airport. It was carrying 167 passengers and nine crewmembers.

What is Known So Far About Ukrainian Boeing 737 That Crashed After Take-Off From Tehran Airport
Here is what is known about the deadly aviation incident so far:

The plane was manufactured in 2016 and successfully passed maintenance and checks ahead of its last flight.
According to reports by local media outlets and alleged footage showing the crash, one of the jet's engines caught fire mid-flight, allegedly due to a technical problem. The latter has not been confirmed officially so far.
Ukraine’s Embassy in Iran initially ruled out a terror attack as the possible cause of the crash, but later retracted the statement, saying that a probe will be conducted by an investigative committee.
The airline that owned the jet stated that the Boeing 737-800 was functioning properly and that the probability of a human error on the pilots' part was minimal due to them being highly qualified professionals.

Investigation

Both of the plane's black boxes containing information useful for the investigation have already been located.
Ukraine has announced the establishment of a commission that will determine the cause of the Boeing's crash. The country's authorities have also suspended all flights above Iranian territory until the cause of the crash has been determined.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said that a criminal investigation into the incident had been opened, adding that all theories need to be probed.
The country's Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk promised to send aviation experts to Iran to assist in the investigation of the crash.
The plane's manufacturer, the Boeing Corporation, stated that it is also gathering info related to the 737-800 jet's crash.

Passengers

There were a total of 167 passengers as well as nine crewmembers on board the aircraft when it crashed.
All of them died in the incident as the plane became engulfed in fire mid-flight, the head of Iran's Emergency Department said.
The majority of passengers came from Iran – 82 in total. The plane was also carrying 63 Canadians, 10 Swedes, 4 Afghans, 3 Germans, and 3 Brits. It also carried 11 Ukrainians, 9 of whom were crew members.

Flight PS752 crashed on the same night as the Iranian military conducted missile strikes on US military facilities in Iraq in retaliation for the murder of its high-ranking General Qasem Soleimani. However, no official statements have indicated whether the two events are linked in some way.

The more we find out about Tehran plane crash, the more questions we have. Here are the main ones
Finian Cunningham
is an award-winning journalist. For over 25 years, he worked as a sub-editor and writer for The Mirror, Irish Times, Irish Independent and Britain's Independent, among others.

The crash of the Ukrainian plane in Iran so soon after the country launched a missile strike would have been a geopolitical event no matter what. Then came the strangely certain statements, and the retractions.
Iran blames technical issues, Ukraine not so sure

Iranian authorities were quick to blame a technical fault for the fatal crash of the Ukrainian airliner which took off from Tehran bound for Kiev Wednesday morning, with all 176 onboard losing their lives.

Ali Abedzedah, head of Iran’s civil aviation authority, attributed the cause of the crash to engine failure, and said there was no involvement of terrorism.

While Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky warned against “speculation and unchecked theories”, his prime minister Oleksiy Honcharuk told a press conference that he was not ruling out the possibility that a missile could have brought down the plane.
If it’s a coincidence, it’s a rare one

The timing of the incident certainly raises suspicions about what exactly happened.

Earlier that morning, at around 2am local time, Iran had carried out a barrage of surface-to-surface airstrikes on two US military bases in Iraq. It was reported that 22 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran and all hit their targets, but with no American casualties. The missile attack was the anticipated retaliation by Iran for the US drone assassination of its top Iranian commander, General Qassem Soleimani on January 3. The kill order was given by president Trump.

There is no suggestion that the Ukrainian airliner could have been hit by a stray Iranian missile aimed at the US forces in Iraq. It took off four hours after the airstrikes were launched into Iraq. That would explain why the Iranian authorities have been keen to emphasize a technical accident occurred on board the plane. Most of the passengers were Iranian nationals, as well as Canadian, Ukrainian, British and German.
New plane, odd flight data

Nevertheless, the flight data of PS752 shows unusual circumstances.

The Boeing 737-800 is not the same model as the ill-fated Boeing 737 Max, which has been grounded over the past year due to fatal computer navigation problems. The Boeing 737-800 has a good safety record. So too has the operator, Ukrainian International Airlines, which has never had a deadly accident during its 28 years of business.

The aircraft was serviced on Monday, two days before its doomed flight out of Tehran. There were no reported technical issues with the three-year-old plane.

Two minutes after take-off at around 6am local time, PS752 stopped transmitting flight data. The pilot and crew, said to be reliable and “excellent” by UIA, did not communicate back to Tehran air control alerting to any problem.

The flight data shows the aircraft climbing normally to an altitude of 8,000 feet (2.4 kilometers), when it suddenly stopped communicating. One would think that if there was a technical engine problem then the flight data would show a haphazard ascent. Also, the pilot would have been expected to transmit a distress alert of the plane losing power. He didn’t.
Could a missile have brought it down?

Video footage of the aircraft just before crashing 10kms from Tehran shows the plane streaking on fire silhouetted against a dark sky as it dramatically descended, before hitting the ground and emitting a ball of flames.

Todd Curtis, an aviation safety analyst, is quoted by the BBC as saying: “The airplane was heavily fragmented which means either there was an intense impact on the ground or something happened in the sky.”

Iranian government official Qasem Biniaz asserts that if the plane had been hit by a rocket then it would have disintegrated in mid-air.

That’s not necessarily the case. The downing of Malaysian flight MH-17 in July 2014 over eastern Ukraine is believed to have been caused by a ground-to-air missile strike. But when the plane crashed, its fuselage was largely intact before ground impact.

That being said, however, it is doubtful that a stray Iranian missile was involved in the downing of PS752, or any other missile for that matter. Surely radar data or satellite records would show up the trajectory of a missile. If the Americans or Israelis wanted to do it in a nefarious way to smear the Iranians, it would seem unlikely as to how they could have gained access to the airspace to launch such a stealth attack.

Still, the nagging question is why the flight crew apparently did not make an emergency call to the air controllers if there was something untoward going on. The fight data apparently stopped abruptly. That suggests something catastrophic happened in-flight, which gave the pilots no chance of recovering from.
Battle for the black boxes

The flight recorders have been retrieved from the crash site, and they may shed light on what the crew made of the last fateful seconds before crashing. A logistical problem is that the Iranians are reportedly refusing to hand over the black boxes to aircraft maker Boeing or the US authorities. It’s not clear who will carry out an investigation, and besides, any probe may become bogged down by the political stand-off between the US and Iran.

It would be reasonable for an investigation to focus particular attention on the plane’s last service – 48 hours before its disastrous end. Could that have been an opportunity for someone to interfere with the aircraft’s engine or cockpit?

Now that might all sound far-fetched, but nothing about this story has been straightforward so far, and we can likely look forward to years of speculation, international commissions, and contested reports.

A Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) Boeing 737-800 crashed minutes after taking off from Tehran International Airport, claiming the lives of 167 passengers and nine crew members. Iranian officials reported that the pilots did not report a malfunction, but witnesses claimed the jet was engulfed in fire prior to its crash.

Two unnamed US officials told AP that the Ukrainian Boeing 737-800 Flight PS752 was "highly likely" downed by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile. The sources cited US intelligence from the region as the basis for their assumption, without delving into details.

Reuters separately reported that US officials believe the Ukrainian passenger plane was brought down "accidentally". One anonymous official told the news agency that American satellites had detected the launch of two missiles just prior to the plane's crash.

US President Donald Trump also commented on the tragic incident when he spoke to reporters, noting that he has his own "suspicions" that somebody "could have made a mistake" since the plane was flying in "a pretty rough neighbourhood". He also expressed scepticism about the theory that the plane experienced a mechanical failure, but didn't elaborate any further, only saying that "something very terrible happened" on the day of the crash.
"Illogical Rumours"

Reports that Flight PS752 was downed by an air defence missile have been vehemently denied by the head of Iran’s civil aviation, who called them "illogical rumours".

Donald Trump Addresses the Nation Following Iran's Airstrikes on US Military Facilities - Video

これまでのフェイクな主張を繰り返しただけです。米国は相当なショックを受けている。

Trump’s Message to Tehran: We Want Bright Future for Iran, but American Missiles are Big, Accurate
Two US military bases in Iraq were attacked early on 8 January with Iranian missiles in an act of retaliation for Washington's operation that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani on 3 January in Baghdad.

In his address to the nation, US President Donald Trump said that no US military personnel were hurt in the Iranian missile attack on its bases in Iraq on 8 January, while the bases themselves sustained "minimal" damage. He noted that this was due to precautions that were taken, the "dispersal of forces", and an early warning system.

The POTUS further announced that the US would impose "new powerful economic sanctions" against Iran in light of the attack against the American military bases. He added that the sanctions would remain until Iran "changes its behaviour" on the international arena. The US president stated that he would ask NATO to be "much more involved" in the process in the Middle East.

While Trump didn't explicitly promise any action against Tehran apart from sanctions over the missile attack on 8 January, he put great emphasis on the modernisation that the US military has undergone under his presidency. The POTUS namely boasted that US Armed Forces possess "big and accurate" missiles, but added that he hopes not to use them against Iran.

"The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it. American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent", he said.

Instead, Trump suggested reaching a new deal with Iran that would make "the world a safer and more peaceful place", while at the same time benefiting the Islamic Republic itself.

Trump also commented on the US killing of Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani, claiming that the US had information about him planning attacks for 4 January. The president added that this became the driving force behind the decision to kill the Iranian general.

US Erbil Airport Attacked by IRGC
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps launched a strong missile attack on a US military base near Erbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan Region in the second leg of "Martyr Soleimani" reprisal operation.

The Arabic-language Al-Mayadeen TV network reported early on Wednesday that a US military base close to Erbil's airport has come under attack.

Other sources said all flights have been cancelled at Erbil airport.

Few hours earlier, the IRGC started heavy ballistic missile attacks on US Ein Al-Assad airbase in Southwestern Iraq near the border with Syria in retaliation for the assassination of IRGC Qods Force Commander Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

Ein Al-Assad is an airbase with a 4km runway at 188m altitude from sea levels, which is the main and the largest US airbase in Iraq.

The IRGC issued a statement saying it has fired tens of ground-to-ground missiles at "the airbase occupied by the terrorist and aggressive army of the United States known as Ein Al-Assad" in reprisal for the martyrdom of IRGC Qods Force Commaner Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

The IRGC warned the US to avoid retaliating the Wednesday attack or else "it will face a more painful and crushing response".

The IRGC Statement also warned "all the US allied states where the terrorist army has a base, any territory that becomes the origin of any hostile and aggressive action against the Islamic Republic of Iran in any way will be targeted".

"We believe that the Zionist regime by no means stands aside from the criminal US regime in these crimes."

The IRGC also called on the American nation to pressure the White House to pull their troops our of the region to avoid further damage and not allow the US rulers to endager the lives of their military men through increasing hatred.

All Iranian underground missile towns are on alert.

The missile attack came hours before the body of General Soleimani was buried.

Lieutenant General Soleimani was martyred in a targeted assassination attack by the US drones at Baghdad International Airport early on Friday morning.

The airstrike also martyred Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), or Hashad al-Shaabi. The two were martyred in an American airstrike that targeted their vehicle on the road to the airport.

Five Iranian and five Iraqi militaries were martyred by missiles fired by the US drone at Baghdad International Airport.

The attack came amid tensions that started by the US attack on PMF units that killed 28 Iraqi popular forces. A day later, Iraqi people attacked the US embassy in Baghdad.

The targeted assassination attack represents a dramatic escalation by the US toward Iran after months of tensions. The tensions take root in Trump’s decision in May 2018 to withdraw the US from Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers, struck under his predecessor.
