‘Very good start!’: Trump signals support for Yemen power-sharing deal

Iran: Aden Deal Not to Help Crisis in Yemen
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian foreign ministry announced on Wednesday that the agreement signed between fugitive President Mansour Hadi and the UAE-backed separatists in Southern Yemen will not help soothe the crisis in the war-torn country.

"Signing such documents will not help resolution of problems in Yemen and it will be a step to prolong Saudi Arabia and its allies' occupation in Southern Yemen directly or through their proxy forces," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi said on Wednesday.

He advised Saudi Arabia to give a positive response to the initiative presented by Mahdi al-Mashat, the president of Yemen's Supreme Political Council, on the halt of recirocal attacks rather than making decisions for groups that have no authority.

"As stressed many times, the Islamic Republic of Iran believes the first step to resolve the crisis in Yemen is stopping the war and bloodshed and removing the cruel siege on the Yemeni people, and the next step is holding Yemeni-Yemeni talks to attain an agreement for the political future of the country," Mousavi said.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the goal of bringing the government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power and crushing the Ansarullah movement.

The US-based Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED), a nonprofit conflict-research organization, estimates that the war has claimed more than 100,000 lives over the past four and a half years.

The war has also taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure, destroying hospitals, schools, and factories. The UN says over 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, including 10 million suffering from extreme levels of hunger.

‘Very good start!’: Trump signals support for Yemen power-sharing deal
US President Donald Trump has tweeted his enthusiasm for a power-sharing peace deal signed between Yemen’s government and southern separatists and hailed as a step toward a broader political solution for the complicated conflict.

Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon that the plan marked a “very good start” on solving the crisis. “Please all work hard to get a final deal,” he added.

The Saudi-backed government in Yemen signed the deal to end the power struggle that had fractured the Saudi coalition fighting the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which ousted the government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi from Sanaa in 2014. The southern separatists are supported by the United Arab Emirates, Riyadh’s main coalition partner.

Riyadh’s envoy to Yemen said the deal would involve the separatist Southern Transitional Council (STC) joining a new cabinet and that all armed forces will come under government control.

In a televised signing ceremony, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the pact could open “broader talks” between parties “to reach a political solution and end the war.”

Riyadh saw solving the crisis between the government and separatists as crucial in allowing it to focus on fighting the Houthis at its southern border.

The deal calls for the creation of a new cabinet of no more than 24 ministers within 30 days, with equal representation for northerners and southerners.

The deal has also been hailed by United Nations envoy Martin Griffiths as an important step toward bringing an end to a war that has pushed millions of Yemenis to the brink of famine.

Pakistan released POISONOUS GAS to pollute Delhi’s air, Indian politician claims
Delhi’s record-breaking air pollution may be the result of a covert chemical attack by Pakistan, an Indian politician has claimed, insisted that his airtight theory should be “seriously” considered.

“There is a possibility that poisonous gas could have been released by any neighboring country which is afraid of us,” Meerut BJP leader Vineet Agarwal Sharda said.

Listing Pakistan and China as the two prime suspects, Sharda said that India “must seriously consider” whether Islamabad was releasing poisonous substances into Delhi’s air. He also accused Pakistan of being intimidated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi – a BJP member – and stated ominously that India has never lost a war to its nuclear-armed neighbor.

He also criticized government officials who blamed the dangerous environmental conditions on emissions from factories and agriculture.

“The farmer is the backbone of our country. Farmers and industries should not be blamed,” the BJP leader said.

Indian officials have been scrambling to find a solution – or in this case, excuses – for Delhi’s hazardous level of air pollution.

Earlier this week, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan suggested that eating vitamin-rich carrots could help shield Indians from pollution-related illnesses.

Cancer cases in India spike by over 300% in 1 year, new govt data shows
The number of Indians diagnosed with cancer more than tripled between 2017 and 2018, according to a new government report. The increase is attributed to a rise in unhealthy lifestyles, as well as better detection.

Of the 65 million patients who visited state-run NCD (non-communicable disease) clinics in 2018, 160,000 were treated for common cancer – including cervical, oral, and breast cancer. Revealed in India’s 2019 National Health Profile, the figure represents a nearly 324-percent increase from the previous year.

The number of people who used the government-run facilities nearly doubled from 2017-18, suggesting that cancer detection improved significantly over the two-year period.

India’s Health Ministry attributed the worrying uptick to poor diet and tobacco and alcohol use. India currently finds itself near the top of the list for overall number of cancer cases. India’s cancer rate in proportion to its population is considerably lower than much of the developed world. However, poor data reporting and a shortage of oncologists in the country means that many cancer cases go undetected.

The report also had some positive news. The Health Ministry found that average life expectancy in India increased from 49.7 years in 1970-75 to 68.7 years in 2012-16.

‘Absolutely disgusting’: Indian celebrities lambaste govt over Delhi air pollution emergency
As Delhiites continue to suffer through a bout of extreme smog, irate celebrities, including Bollywood elites, have publicly criticized the government for perceived inaction over the growing public health crisis.

Film and TV star Priyanka Chopra is in Delhi to film her next project ‘The White Tiger’ and, despite expressing initial joy at filming in her home country, she quickly took to Instagram to share just how severe the air pollution is in the capital.

“It’s so hard to shoot here right now that I can’t even imagine what it must be like to live here under these conditions,” the actor said in the caption below her masked face. “Pray for the homeless. Be safe everyone.”

The seasonal smog is reaching ‘hazardous’ levels, with air quality now ranking in the ‘severe’ category at over 30 times the World Health Organisation’s safe daily limit of pollutants.

Veteran actor Rishi Kapoor also weighed in on the situation, sharing a pithy, wry tweet which read: “Breathlessness, Palpitation, moist eyes… you’re either in love or in Delhi.”

Indian health minister says ‘eat your carrots’ to protect against air pollution epidemic. ‘No,’ responds the entire internet
Delhi’s air pollution has reached record-breaking levels, prompting smog-covered Indians to demand government action to clear up the deadly crisis. Just eat more carrots, the country’s health minister has amazingly tweeted.

The city’s smog is reaching ‘hazardous’ levels, with air quality now ranking in the ‘severe’ category at over 30 times the World Health Organisation’s safe daily limit of pollutants. Schools have been shuttered and flights canceled as officials declared a public health emergency.

In perhaps one of the most ill-advised attempts at public outreach this century, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan tweeted out a truly remarkable health tip – accompanied by a graphic bordering on self-satire – in an attempt to help Indians cope with the dangerously-poor air quality.

“Eating carrots helps the body get Vitamin A, potassium, & antioxidants which protect against night blindness common in India. Carrots also help against other pollution-related harm to health,” Harsh Vardhan wrote, attaching what appears to be carrot clip art. “Munch your way to good health with winter carrots,” the graphic said, using double exclamation marks to emphasize the effectiveness of the airtight anti-smog solution.

As usual, cynics on social media rushed to criticize the well-meaning minister, who simply wanted to relay a remedy for his country’s unfathomably awful smog problem.
