‘Thanks Russia!’: Kurdish military chief welcomes Russian peacekeeping patrols
Speaking with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, SDF chief Mazloum Abdi thanked Moscow for securing a deal with Turkey and said the Kurdish militia will support Syrian troops and Russian military police patrolling the border.
Talks between the top Russian military officials and the commander-in-chief of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were held on Wednesday, via video link. Abdi discussed the ongoing developments in northeastern Syria with Shoigu and Russia’s Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov, expressing full support to the deployment of Russian military police and Syrian Army units into the region.
“Currently, units of the Russian military police and regular Syrian troops are being deployed into many locations. We are providing them with all kind of help and assistance,” Abdi said.

Top Erdogan Aide Raps US Treatment of SDF' Commander
TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkey criticized the United States on Thursday for treating the commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as a “legitimate political figure”, underlining continued tensions with Washington despite the end of its offensive in Syria.

Republican and Democratic US senators urged the State Department on Wednesday to quickly provide a visa to the commander, General Mazloum Kobani, so that he can visit the United States to discuss the situation in Syria.

Ankara views Mazloum as a terrorist closely linked to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey.

“We are deeply concerned about the treatment (of Mazloum).... This individual is a senior leader of the PKK, which the United States and others consider a terrorist organization, and a fugitive from justice,” Fahrettin Altun, director of communications for President Tayyip Recep Tayyip, stated.

“He is the subject of an outstanding Interpol red notice. He is wanted for multiple terror attacks targeting the Turkish security forces, a NATO army, as well as civilians,” Altun told Reuters.

Trump’s Syria ‘oil gambit’ is a crime, and what may be worse – a mistake
US President Donald Trump’s baffling comments about keeping some troops in Syria to “secure the oil” suggest a confused, contradictory – and ultimately self-defeating – policy.

Earlier this month, Trump appeared to have used the impending Turkish invasion to deftly cut the Gordian knot of US presence in Syria, citing it as a pretext for pulling out troops that weren’t supposed to be there to begin with – and had long since completed their mission in any case.

He stood by that decision even as the Washington establishment shrieked about “betrayal” of allied Kurdish militias, and was vindicated when a deal worked out by Moscow and Ankara created a solution that benefited everyone – except those in the US still committed to regime change in Damascus, that is.

While Trump has not officially renounced the “Assad must go” policy of his predecessor, the pullout was supposed to be the end of it in practice. The sudden talk about Syrian oil fields, however, suggests that someone from the “swamp” managed to persuade the president to keep one foot in the endless foreign wars he has pledged to end.

“We want to keep the oil,” Trump said this week, to the confusion of everybody. Attempting to explain on Thursday, he said the oil fields were “held by [Islamic State] until the United States took them over with the help of the Kurds. We will NEVER let a reconstituted ISIS have those fields!”

Except there is no sign of IS getting reconstituted or rising from the ashes – and the Syrians rightly regard any US attempt to seize the oil fields as theft and piracy.

Much has been made of Trump’s own comments from 2011 about the US seizing Iraqi oil as “reimbursement” for the 2003 invasion, but that does not appear to be the case here. Ironically, Trump has boasted recently about his administration making the US into a net exporter of oil and gas, so it does not need the Syrian oil.

The oil fields in question were traditionally used to meet domestic demands and are too small to be interesting to Washington in terms of profit, journalist and orientalist Andrey Ontikov told RT.

One clue might be in the words of US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who said the purpose of keeping the troops in Syria is to “deny access to [IS] and any other groups that may want to seek that revenue to enable their own malign activities.” (emphasis added)

This phrasing is a dead giveaway that the oil gambit is not about IS, but about blocking the government in Damascus from using its own natural resources to rebuild. Already under a blockade by the US and its EU allies, Syria desperately needs the oil to help its people survive the winter. "Malign activities" is a phrase Washington often uses in reference to Iran, a strategic partner and ally of the Syrian government.

If that sounds to you like a policy designed by someone from the Washington establishment, which has dreamed of regime change in Damascus for the past eight years and greeted Trump’s decision with wailing and gnashing of teeth, you are not alone. NBC News has even named a possible culprit – retired General Jack Keane, a Fox News military analyst, who they say gave Trump a briefing about the oil fields.

Yet Keane has been against any US withdrawal from Syria or the Middle East in general, and Trump has ignored his advice in the past in favor of other Fox personalities – such as Tucker Carlson and his frequent guest, retired US Army Colonel Douglas Macgregor, who both approved of the Syria pullout.

Critics of the purported plan point out that its illegal. So was the US presence in Syria, mind you – and their transit through Iraq as well, according to Baghdad, or the 2003 invasion, or… well a number of other things, too long to get into here. Illegality has never stopped Washington, convinced as it is of American exceptionalism.

Yes, the oil gambit would be a crime – but worse than that, it would be a mistake. By leaving troops in Syria to “keep the oil,” whether for or from someone, Trump would be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory – and for what? Appeasing the very same Washington Swamp he literally just denounced as “human scum”?

Things have had a way of working out in Trump’s favor, and he has described himself as a “stable genius.” Yet there is nothing clever or genial about this, frankly stupid, plan. As he himself would say, let’s see what happens.

‘Mission unchanged’? US to send troops and machines to guard Syrian oil interests, after having vowed to ‘withdraw’
US Defense Secretary Mark Esper has confirmed that US troops are being relocated to Syria’s oil regions and more “mechanized forces” are coming, despite previous pledges to pull out.

Just weeks ago, President Donald Trump pompously declared it was “time to bring our soldiers back home” as he announced that American forces would withdraw from Syria in the face of the then-looming Turkish offensive targeting Kurdish-led militias – Washington’s long-time allies in the fight against Islamic State (IS, former ISIS/ISIL) terrorists.

Then, he suddenly changed his mind and said that certain troops will stay, supposedly to prevent the Syrian oil fields falling into the hands of potentially resurgent terrorists that escaped Kurdish prisons in the turmoil accompanying the Turkish operation.

Now it turns out that the US will send even more troops to the area, to ensure that the oil is “totally secure.” On Friday, Esper told other NATO defense ministers in Brussels that the US is “taking some actions ... to strengthen our position at Deir Ezzor, to ensure that we can deny ISIS access to the oil fields.”

He also added that the American contingent in the area would now “include some mechanized forces.” While Esper did not provide any more details on the issue, some media reports suggest that some Abrams tanks might be deployed to the area. The exact number of troops to be sent on this new mission is also still unknown.

Despite all these fluctuations in the US’s Syria strategy, Esper insists “the mission remains unchanged.” “The mission in Syria remains what the mission in Syria began,” he said, noting it’s all about defeating IS.

This directly contradicts Trump's previous statements, on multiple occasions, that IS has been largely or entirely defeated, that the captured terrorists remain in prison and that the US mission was only supposed to last for a few months, but ended up stretching to years in an "endless war" he’s wanted to end.

Syria has previously condemned any US troop presence on its territory as an illegal foreign invasion, no different than that of IS. While the remaining scattered IS militants seem unlikely to take or even threaten an oil field, the presence of US troops will prevent the Syrian people from using it to rebuild.

Syrian Army Clashes with Turkish Troops in Ras al-Ein
TEHRAN (FNA)- Clashes erupted between the Syrian Army units deployed in Ras al-Ein and Turkish occupation forces, which attacked the area during army’s deployment.

The clashes erupted as the Syrian Army units advanced from the direction of Tal Tamr in the Northern countryside of Hasaka towards the Turkish border, and deployed in the villages of Um Harmlah, Bab al-Kheir, Um Eshbeh, al-Asdiayah in the Southeastern countryside of Ras al-Ein, reducing the distance to the Turkish border to few kilometers.

Ras al-Ein is located in Northwestern Hasaka province and 85 kilometers from the city of Hasaka and near the borders with Turkey.

On Sunday, a large number of Syrian Army troops deployed in the villages of al-Sibatieh, al-Jamilieh, Kharbeh al-Dabs, Al-Qassemieh, al-Rashidiyeh, al-Davoudieh, al-Aziziyeh and al-Zahreh in Northwestern Hasaka.

On Saturday, the Syrian Army had deployed in Western regions of the city of Qameshli in Hasaka province and they were warmly welcomed by the residents of these regions.

Amid a warm welcome by people, Syrian forces entered Um al-Keif village on Tal Tamar-Ras al-Ein road to face the Turkish aggression and protect civilians from any attack by Ankara-backed militants.

Several military vehicles carrying army soldiers moved on Friday afternoon from Qamishli city to be deployed in the Western countryside of Hasaka to face Turkish assault and protect the people.

On Saturday, units of the Syrian Army had entered the administrative borders of Ras al-Ayn city on Tal Tamar-Ras al-Ein axis North of Hasaka, walking into the eight villages of al-Qasimiyah, al-Rashidiyah, al-Dawodiyah, Azizyah, Dhara, Sibatiyyah, Jumayliyah and Khirbet al-Dibs to reach the Syrian-Turkish borders.

Government forces have deployed several units to the Turkish border during the past week, and promised to reinforce their troops in the next few days.

Trump’s Imaginary Withdrawal From Syria: A Look Behind the Wizard’s Curtain

Russia: Pullout of Kurdish Militias from Safe Zone in Northeastern Syria Completed Ahead of Schedule
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that the withdrawal of Kurdish militia forces from the safe zone in Northeastern Syria has been completed ahead of schedule.

He added that the region is now under the control of Syrian border guards and Russian military police, Sputnik reported.

Shoigu also revealed that Russian forces, along with their counterparts from Armenia, are conducting mine-sweeping activities in the region, having already cleared 100 square kilometres not only of mines, but also of various undetonated ordnances that could pose a threat to civilians.

Ankara halted its military operation, called "Peace Spring", giving the Kurds a limited timeframe to withdraw from their positions within the so-called safe-zone in Northern Syria, East of the Euphrates. Ankara believes that Kurdish forces are linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey. Ankara announced that the withdrawal of the Kurdish militia from Northern Syria near the border with Turkey was a key precondition for halting its military operation.

Moscow and Ankara recently agreed during talks in Sochi that Russian military police and Syrian border guards would facilitate the People's Protection Units (YPG)'s withdrawal. Under the Sochi memorandum, Russian military police and Turkish forces would also jointly patrol a 10-kilometre wide zone to the East and West of Ankara’s recent military operation in Syria.

Who Put the Last Nail in the Coffin of ISIL Leader?

Who Put the Last Nail in the Coffin of ISIL Leader?
TEHRAN (FNA)- US President Donald Trump’s fancy tale of ISIL’s Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi dying “like a dog” and a coward, whimpering pathetically all the while, and watching the whole thing in real time like a Hollywood film is raising eyebrows, mostly on the basis that it didn’t happen like he says, if at all.

As many, including Russians and the UN, have expressed profound doubt over the US allegation about the ISIL leader's hunt-down, the world is now asking President Trump to corroborate the claim with irrefutable evidence and proof. The world body says they don't have anything better than Trump's words at hand to believe that Al-Baghdadi has been killed. Suspicions about the claim are more justified when one remembers that this is not the first the time the Americans have claimed the death of the terrorist leader.

Yet, even those who have come to buy Trump's words still deny the US president's description of the operation.

It’s not just that Trump is known for embellishing on his accomplishments. Rather, officials say that the footage Trump and his staff were watching amounted only to overhead surveillance footage, with no audio, so he couldn’t have seen or heard much of what he claimed.

The story of Baghdadi fleeing into a tunnel “crying and screaming all the way” while being chased by a military dog, before whimpering and blowing himself us, killing himself and his children, and wounding the dog may all be a story, apart from a dog getting injured.

This is because Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley said he was unable to confirm any claims of Baghdadi whimpering, and the White House similarly said they have no idea where Trump got that, though neither is denying that it happened. Adding to questions about the DNA test related to Baghdadi’s killing, the Kurdish SDF now claims that they’d seized Baghdadi’s underpants and used those for a DNA test before the raid, to 100% identify him. Nor is that all:

The world should celebrate the fake caliph’s demise, but no one appears to be happier about this than Trump, who hopes to take advantage of this development in order to improve America's standing in the region following the controversy that erupted after its abrupt military drawdown in Northeastern Syria and his own domestic political image ahead of next year's heated elections.

By targeting al-Baghdadi's killing and having American special forces successfully pull it off, Trump can double down on his narrative that this terrorist group has been defeated in Syria and its desire to create a so-called "caliphate" there has been thwarted.

Through the combined efforts of the Syrian Arab Army and its Russian, Iranian and Hezbollah anti-terrorist allies that it legally invited into the country, this tremendous feat was achieved, not through the illegal bombing campaign of the US-led coalition whose only "success" was turning Syria into rubble and worsening the humanitarian crisis in the country.

Still, Trump believes that his narrative could help recover some of the soft power losses that his country experienced after being accused of selling out the Kurds upon abruptly scaling back its military presence in Syria.

In addition, Trump can now justify his plans to further reduce the Pentagon's footprint there on the basis that the original intent of the mission (which was to destroy ISIL) has been achieved so there isn't any real reason to continue spending taxpayer funds to stay there, unless, of course, he's serious about controlling its oil like he previously tweeted about.

The question thus becomes one of whether al-Baghdadi's death is more of a public relations opportunity for the US than a real anti-terrorist success in its own right, which certainly appears not to be the case. Again, it can't be reiterated enough that it's indeed a positive development that the leader of the world's most notorious terrorist group was just killed but his death does not mean the end of ISIL nor fights against terrorism.

ISIL is still a threat, albeit not the same conventional "caliphate". Al-Baghdadi might have symbolically inspired some of the newest terrorist recruits, but it was more the brief period of the so-called "caliphate's" creation that probably inspired them much more, so his death isn't likely going to change ISIL's appeal to its core radicalized audience.

On that note, the international community must not let its guard down by falling on his death as it's not the end of the war on terror. It shouldn’t sit on its hands either while the US and company steals Syria’s oil. On the contrary, though the page has turned and a new chapter has begun, the story is far from over.

Terrorism still remains one of the greatest threats to the world even if it changes its form after al-Baghdadi's death, so the world must remain alert at all times. As well, the world must urge the US and company to end their illegal occupation of Syria. It’s the only way ahead to reconstruction, and the only safe passage to national reconciliation and peace in that war-torn country.

Nicolle Wallace: Trump was notified the House Dems will impeach him

Donald Trump is due credit if they did, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman has said
“The news itself can’t be taken negatively by the Russian authorities,” Dmitry Peskov said. “Indeed, our troops saw American planes and American drones in the area, which may have been on a mission there.”

‘Something very big has just happened!’ Trump sparks guessing frenzy with cryptic tweet amid reports of al-Baghdadi’s death
US President Donald Trump triggered a wild guessing game after announcing on Twitter that “something very big” has happened, amid reports that the US military killed the Islamic State leader.

“Something very big has just happened!” Trump tweeted on Saturday evening. The six-word message, sent amid a slow news day in the US, has sparked an avalanche of speculation as to what the president was talking about, since he did not follow up his cryptic post with an explanation.

Meanwhile, rumors have been swirling that the president is going to announce the killing of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) mastermind Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi by the US military.

In a tweet that has been shared over 4,000 times before it was deleted, political activist Ryan Fournier, co-chairman of Students for Trump, wrote that US forces “captured” the warlord, celebrating it as a “huge defeat for ISIS.”

In a follow-up tweet, Fournier clarified that the report remains unconfirmed and is based on sources.

Lets assume the US did kill #Baghdadi .
- that would mean the US admits they’ve been preventing the Syrian and Russian army from attacking AlQaeda & ISIS in Idlib.
- it could potentially mean Trump’s tired of ISIS being used as an excuse to undermine his pull out.

Trump Approves Special Ops Raid Targeting ISIS Leader Baghdadi, Military Says He's Dead
The United States military has conducted a special operations raid targeting one of its most high-value targets, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), Newsweek has learned. President Donald Trump approved the mission nearly a week before it took place.

Amid reports Saturday of U.S. military helicopters over the Syria's northwestern Idlib province, a senior Pentagon official familiar with the operation and Army official briefed on the matter told Newsweek that Baghdadi was the target of the top-secret operation in the last bastion of the country's Islamist-dominated opposition, a faction that has clashed with ISIS in recent years.

A U.S. Army official briefed on the results of the operation told Newsweek that Baghdadi was killed in the raid, and the Defense Department told the White House they have "high confidence" that the high-value target killed was Baghdadi, but further verification is pending DNA and biometric testing. The senior Pentagon official said there was a brief firefight when U.S. forces entered the compound in Idlib's Barisha village and that Baghdadi then killed himself by detonating a suicide vest. Family members were present. According to Pentagon sources, no children were harmed in the raid but two Baghdadi wives were killed after detonating their own explosive vests.

Members of the Joint Special Operations Command's Delta Team carried out Saturday's high-level operation after receiving actionable intelligence, according to sources familiar with the operation. The location raided by special operations troops had been under surveillance for some time.

The senior Pentagon official told Newsweek that the compound in which Baghdadi was located was then taken out with an airstrike in order to prevent the site from becoming a shrine to the leader. Turkey, a NATO ally backing local insurgents, was not notified prior to the operation, the official said.

On Saturday night, after the operation had concluded, President Trump tweeted: "Something very big has just happened!" The White House announced later that the president will make a "major statement" Sunday at 9:00 a.m.

Islamic State leader al-Baghdadi detonated suicide vest during US raid in Syria – reports
Notorious Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a US military operation in northwest Syria, according to reports. He supposedly detonated a suicide vest during the raid.

It is said that during the US mission – involving choppers, warplanes and drones – American troops engaged in a firefight with the terrorist. At a certain point, al-Baghdadi detonated the vest, multiple outlets, including ABC and Defense One, said citing sources. Later on Saturday, Iraqi state TV announced it will air the footage of the reported raid.

Meanwhile, in an apparent reference to the news, a commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, tweeted about the “successful, historic operation as a result of joint intelligence work with the US.”

The Pentagon has yet to confirm the rumors, but US President Donald Trump is expected to make a major announcement on Sunday morning. On Saturday night, Trump tweeted that “something very big has just happened!” – fueling speculation that al-Baghdadi had in fact been killed.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) leader has been in hiding for several years. Footage distributed by the terrorist group in April of 2019 purported to show him sitting on the ground with a Kalashnikov assault rifle next to him. Before that, al-Baghdadi was last seen in a video from July 2014, when he spoke at the Great Mosque in Mosul.

Trump thanks Russia, Turkey, Syria, Iraq & Kurds for aiding US operation that killed al-Baghdadi
US President Donald Trump has tipped his hat to countries and groups that played a supporting role in a US military operation that killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Trump confirmed on Sunday that al-Baghdadi had been killed in a “daring nighttime raid” in Idlib, northwestern Syria. In a live address from the White House, the US president thanked Russia, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Kurdish forces for aiding the US operation.

He praised the “great cooperation” with Russia, which opened up airspace under its control to allow US warplanes and drones to use the area.

According to Trump, al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest after trying to flee through a tunnel with three of his young children. Although badly mutilated, Trump claimed that they were able to use tests to identify his body.

“He died like a dog, like a coward. The world now is a much safer place,” the US president said.

Who was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi? Here’s what you need to know about the infamous ISIS leader
Islamic State leader and the world’s most wanted man Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed in a US military operation in northwest Syria. But who was the notorious terrorist? Here’s what you need to know.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was the nom de guerre of the infamous mastermind of the barbaric so-called Islamic State (ISIS, formerly ISIL) terror group. Followers of the group called him Caliph Ibrahim and he had a range of other names including Sheikh Baghdadi and Al-Shabah, meaning ‘the ghost’.

Mystery surrounds many aspects of the Iraqi native’s life but he was believed to be 48-years-old and hailed from near the city of Samarra, 125km north of Baghdad, and was part of the al-Bu Badri tribe.

This tribal link allowed Baghdadi to claim that he was a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad's Quraysh tribe, a neccessary qualification for becoming the caliph (the historic leader of all Muslims).

The US invasion of Iraq prompted Baghdadi and his associates to create Jaysh Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamaah (the Army of the Sunni People Group) which operated around Samarra, Diyala and Baghdad and later declared an oath of allegiance to Al Qaeda.

He was picked up by US-led coalition forces and detained from February to December 2004, but was released as he was not considered a high-level threat.

The group changed its name to the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) in 2006 and Baghdadi was appointed the general supervisor of the sharia committees for the “state’s” provinces.

Following the death of ISI leader Abu Umar al-Baghdadi in April 2010, he became the head of the organization and took credit for a blitz of suicide bombings and other attacks targeting Shia and moderate Sunni Muslims that left thousands dead between 2010-2013.

Baghdadi broke the group away from Al Qaeda and declared his own, more aggressive jihadist group. In 2014, the so-called Islamic State overran large swathes of Iraq and Syria and Baghdadi appeared in an infamous video at the al-Nuri mosque in Mosul, Iraq, where he announced a "caliphate" in the regions they controlled.

During the height of its rule, the group enforced its barbarous version of Islamic law on millions. It has been blamed for mass executions and is accused of carrying out war crimes.

Rumors of Baghdadi’s demise have long circulated. After declaring the creation of the ‘caliphate’ in 2014, he seemingly vanished for years, prompting rampant speculation that he had been killed.

He remained unseen as the so-called caliphate swelled to an area roughly the size of Britain and remained in the shadows as the terror group was fought back by a multinational effort led by Syria, Russia and Iran, as well as a coalition led by the US.

Then, after five years without an appearance, he suddenly reemerged in April this year, when footage of him discussing jihad with his cohorts was released. The video shows Baghdadi claiming that the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka were “revenge” for battles lost in Syria.

The reappearance was largely interpreted as a reassertion of his leadership of the group that, while on the backfoot in its own backyard, had claimed several deadly attacks in Europe.

As recently as September, the group released an audio message said to be from Baghdadi which praised the operations of IS affiliates in other regions.

‘Disposal complete’: ISIS chief al-Baghdadi buried at sea, like bin Laden, but photo & video proof remains classified – Pentagon

The US got rid of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s body mere hours after a swift DNA test confirmed the terrorist’s identity, Pentagon officials said, adding that all evidence of the raid and his burial at sea remains classified.

Following the US special forces operation in northwestern Syria, in which Washington claims al-Baghdadi was eliminated, the mutilated body was immediately taken “to a secure facility to confirm his identity with forensic DNA testing,” Army General Mike Milley, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a news briefing.

The disposal of his remains has been done and is complete and was handled appropriately.

Just like al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group chief was reportedly given a proper burial at sea in accordance with Islamic tradition, with all Muslim religious rites afforded to him. While the raid and subsequent processes of identification and body ‘disposal’ were documented in numerous photos and videos, they are yet to go through a “declassification process,” according to the US general.

We are not prepared at the time to release those.

Even though Donald Trump said earlier he was considering making “certain parts” of the video from the raid available to the public – presumably with al-Baghdadi “was whimpering, screaming, and crying” as he met his end – it remains unclear how much of footage would see the light, if any.

The Obama administration never publicly released any video footage of the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, or photos of his body, claiming they could pose a “national security risk.”

Washington’s public announcement that al-Baghdadi had finally been neutralized, this time for real, sounded “confident,” but has yet to be backed up by hard evidence, the UN Monitoring Team on terrorist groups said previously. Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry questioned at least parts of the story, noting that despite Trump’s claims, it never opened up the Syrian air space under its control to US jets, and didn’t record any US coalition airstrikes in the area.

Where is the proof? We’ve been here before, Al Baghdadi’s been reported dead or fatally injured many times
The US President is bragging fulsomely and giving gruesome details of the Special Ops mission that neutralized terrorist boss Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi. But the IS leader has been reported as injured or dead many times before.

As Donald Trump described watching the death of Al-Baghdadi via a satellite link with his fellow military commanders, his boasting and name-calling seemed a little, I dunno, off. A bit too much with detail and with “frightened puppies” remarks.

According to one report from close to the events, The Donald was itching on Saturday night to tweet out the demise of Al Baghdadi, but Delta Force on the ground first needed to verify that they had their man. The aim was to prevent the president getting ahead of the facts before he hit ‘Send.’

Nevertheless, he could not help himself and sent a teaser – no other word for it – on Twitter on Saturday night, saying “Something very big has just happened!” before Sunday’s televised address to the nation, as officials scrambled to accurately identify the remains of the mutilated body lying in a collapsed, dead-end tunnel with three murdered children in Idlib, north-western Syria.

This was an episode that called for restraint, as it is not the first time the death of Al Baghdadi has been announced, only to be later proven wrong. The Guardian had him paralyzed with a severe spinal injury after an airstrike in April 2015, Syrian state TV reported him dead in June 2017, Iranian TV said he was “definitely dead” and the Russians claimed as much again, all in the same month.

In July 2017 he was pronounced dead once more, then alive and then, to clear the matter up, a year later, he emerged from obscurity with a new propaganda video.

So, while Trump described watching the fugitive “whimpering and crying and screaming all the way” to his death, why not just hold back a tick until we’re offered some more substantial information?

While we do not want to see the sort of televised barbarism that befell Muammar Ghaddafi or Saddam Hussein, some irrefutable proof, shared with the watching world, that the remains are those of Al Baghdadi, would be welcome.

And if he is definitely dead? Well, that is not necessarily the end of the problem. The concern in the international counterterrorism community is that the chaotic, smuggler-ridden territory that the US troops found themselves closing in on Al Baghdadi is actually Al Qaeda turf. Remember those guys?

Add to that fact that the latest incident happened hundreds of miles from where US intelligence believed the fugitive Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) leader was hiding. This begs the question: what was al Baghdadi doing there? Making cosy with other of his murderous pals as they plot together against the infidels? That possibility has to cause the rest of us some deep concerns.

This terrorist leader was nobody’s fool. So he must have been aware that western security forces would eventually close in on him and when they did, his sudden, violent death would most likely create the outcome of leaving a leadership vacuum.

As any cursory view of his early propaganda videos shows, Al Baghdadi was no natural leader, so he devolved leadership and delegated authority to regional lieutenants to keep the IS show on the road on multiple fronts.

That means we can now expect a power struggle among these wannabe head honchos for succession, along with the expected struggles to prove their credentials through increasingly violent attacks against their enemies. It will not be pleasant.

Like the snake that can still deliver a deadly bite after decapitation, Al Baghdadi’s legacy may prove to be catastrophic and Trump’s bragging that, under his direction as Commander-In-Chief, the IS caliphate has been “obliterated 100 percent” may prove premature.

We have to remember that, while Osama bin Laden and now Al Baghdadi might have been eliminated, these terrorist organisations are not so much about personalities but about an ideology.

That is what needs to be addressed more urgently than the political optics of a Call of Duty-style video stream to the White House Situation Room.

It was easy to miss, amid the unseemly boasting, the blessed irony that it was Kurdish intelligence officers in the region who pointed the US Special Operations forces with their attack dogs in the right direction.

And yes, that would be the same Kurds abandoned by withdrawing US forces a fortnight ago and left at the mercy of a Turkish military attack, resulting in dozens of dead and tens of thousands being displaced.

Luckily for POTUS, seems they are not holding a grudge over that particular betrayal.

Syria Kurds say took DNA sample from Baghdadi underwear
Beirut (AFP) - A Syrian Kurd undercover agent took a pair of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's underwear for DNA identification ahead of the US raid that killed the jihadist leader, a Kurdish official said Monday.

Polat Can, a senior adviser to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), published details of the intelligence work that led to the US raid in which the founder of the Islamic State group was killed.

"Since 15 May, we have been working together with the CIA to track al-Baghdadi and monitor him closely," he said.

"Al-Baghdadi changed his places of residence very often," Polat Can said, adding that the asset managed to reach the house where the IS chief was believed to be hiding.

"Our own source, who had been able to reach al-Baghdadi, brought al-Baghdadi's underwear to conduct a DNA test and make sure (100%) that the person in question was al-Baghdadi himself," the adviser wrote on Twitter.

He said the US raid that killed Baghdadi in the northwestern province of Idlib was largely the result of SDF intelligence work, although Turkey's offensive against the Kurds launched October 9 had delayed the operation.

"Our intelligence source was involved in sending coordinates, directing the airdrop, participating in and making the operation a success until the last minute," Polat Can said.

US President Donald Trump, who announced the death of the world's most wanted man on Sunday, thanked Syrian Kurdish forces "for a certain support they were able to give us", but did not elaborate.

Trump said a DNA field test had confirmed his identity, and he also thanked Turkey, Iraq, Syria and Russia for their cooperation.

The Pentagon said Monday that Baghdadi's body had been disposed of at sea.

Meet the new boss, dead like the old boss? Trump claims Baghdadi’s likely replacement was ALSO killed by US troops
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s right-hand man has been killed by US troops, Donald Trump has claimed, days after announcing that a military raid brought an end to the infamous leader of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

“Just confirmed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s number one replacement has been terminated by American troops. Most likely would have taken the top spot – Now he is also Dead!” Trump tweeted on Tuesday. He did not identify al-Baghdadi’s alleged successor.

Just confirmed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s number one replacement has been terminated by American troops. Most likely would have taken the top spot - Now he is also Dead!
10:29 PM - Oct 29, 2019

The US president did not specify whether the terrorist chief’s mysterious lieutenant was killed alongside his boss in the US military operation in Idlib, Syria last week, or if he was killed in a separate incident. Trump was likely referring to Islamic State spokesman Abu Hassan al-Muhajir, named as a potential replacement for the notorious terrorist leader. The State Department said on Monday that he had been killed hours after the US raid that took down al-Baghdadi.

Trump’s boast about the raid that allegedly killed al-Baghdadi has peeved many liberal pundits and news outlets, with some even airbrushing the head of the worldwide “caliphate” in hopes of depriving Trump of a foreign policy victory. Others, including the UN, have taken issue with the lack of hard evidence pointing to al-Baghdadi’s demise.

The Pentagon says that the terrorist leader’s body was swiftly identified using DNA testing, and then dumped into an unidentified body of water – the same protocol reportedly used to ID and “bury” Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in 2011.

Potential new Isis leader has also been killed, Syrian Kurdish forces say
An Isis spokesman and possible successor to its dead leader has also been killed, Syrian Kurdish forces have said.

They claimed Abu Hassan al-Muhajir died in a joint operation with US troops in northern Syria.

US special forces had killed the extremist group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi just hours before.

Mazloum Abdi, the commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, said his group’s intelligence co-operated with the US military to target Muhajir, who was a key aide to Baghdadi, in a village near Jarablus, a town in northwestern Syria.

If confirmed, the death would be another blow to Isis.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported Muhajir’s death, saying he was travelling in a convoy made up of an oil tanker and a car.

‘Political persecution’: Max Blumenthal arrested in DC police raid, held for 2 days on phony charges over Venezuela embassy siege
Max Blumenthal was arrested in what he called a politically motivated attempt to silence investigative journalism on a fabricated assault charge linked to his coverage of Venezuelan embassy siege by US-backed opposition activists.

In what he described as a SWAT-style raid, a group of DC police officers arrived at Blumenthal’s home around 9am last Friday. The investigative journalist was hauled off to DC’s Central Jail, where he spent two days in a cell, and was denied requests to call a lawyer.

The federal government essentially enlisted the DC police to SWAT me, ensuring that I would be subjected to an early morning raid and then languish in prison for days without even the ability to call an attorney.

The police eventually told Blumenthal he had been accused of assault, stemming from a months-old standoff at the Venezuelan Embassy in Washington, DC, back in May. Following the US-backed coup attempt and the expulsion of Venezuelan diplomats, supporters of President Nicolas Maduro occupied the embassy building – while the crowd backing the self-proclaimed ‘interim’ leader Juan Guaido besieged the premises for several weeks. The pro-Maduro activists were eventually removed from the embassy by force in a US police raid.

Blumenthal was one of the few journalists closely following the standoff and sporadic clashes, and insists the assault allegation is totally fabricated to smear him and intimidate independent journalists. “I was not party to any violent actions around the Venezuelan Embassy,” the Grayzone editor said, dismissing the claim as a “malicious lie.”

“The opposition members who made up these lies about Max and I know they’re lying, and they are obviously using the government and police as tools to get revenge,” said the brother of the Grayzone contributor Alex Rubinstein, Ben. Back then, he was also briefly arrested on phony charges after participating in an attempt to deliver food and sanitary supplies to besieged activists.

It remains unclear why the arrest warrant against Blumenthal was brought back to life so many months later, especially since the request for the warrant had initially been rejected, according to an individual familiar with the case. Blumenthal suggested it is “part of a campaign of political persecution designed to silence me and the The Grayzone for our factual journalism.”

If ISIS chief al-Baghdadi is dead, Trump has made a big contribution to fighting terrorism – Kremlin
While Russia still has no independent confirmation that US forces have killed Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Donald Trump is due credit if they did, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman has said.

“The news itself can’t be taken negatively by the Russian authorities,” Dmitry Peskov said. “Indeed, our troops saw American planes and American drones in the area, which may have been on a mission there.”

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry cast doubt on Washington’s claim of al-Baghdadi’s death, saying there’s no credible data to prove his demise. If confirmed, however, Trump’s efforts should be recognized, Peskov believes.

f indeed the information about al-Baghdadi’s elimination is confirmed, then we can talk about the US president’s significant contribution to the fight against international terrorism.

Moscow’s skepticism is not unfounded, seeing as how rumors of al-Baghdadi’s grave injury or death have surfaced repeatedly for the past four years, only to be later dispelled. Trump, however, has teased that some footage of his ultimate takedown at the hands of US troops could be released at some point.

FARSNEWS2019/10/28
Dissidents' Media Outlets Voice Suspicion about Trump's Claim of Killing Al-Baghdadi
TEHRAN (FNA)- Local media sources affiliated to the Syrian dissidents expressed suspicion that the person killed in a raid in Idlib was ISIL ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as claimed by US President Donald Trump.

Radio Mohafezat Idlib, a telegram channel, wrote on Sunday that the house that the US claims al-Baghdadi resided in with his family belonged to Commander of Horras al-Din group and he (and not Baghdadi) was killed in the attack along with his wife and 5 children.

Horras al-Din is a terrorist group close to al-Qaeda which is active in Northern Syria.

Also, another telegram channel affiliated to the militants named Amjad al-Akhbariyeh Channel quoted an informed source as saying that the house which was attacked in Barisha region in Idlib belonged to Abu Mohammed al-Halabi, non de guerre Abu al-Bara, one of the commanders of Horras al-Din.

The Russian military on Sunday questioned the official US account of the military raid that killed al-Baghdadi, saying it was not aware of any US military operations in the region.

In a statement, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said the Russian military “does not have reliable information” on a US Special Operations raid in Syria’s Idlib province, adding, “The increasing number of direct participants and countries that allegedly took part in this ‘operation,’ each one giving completely contradictory details, raises legitimate questions and doubts about its existence and especially the level of its success.”

In a statement that followed the raid, Trump thanked Russia for its assistance, as well as Turkey, Syria, Iraq and the Syrian Kurds.

Russia maintains a major base in Syria at Lattakia. Konashenkov said, however, that the Russian military had observed no strikes by US aircraft in the region.

“Firstly, on Saturday and in recent days no air strikes were made on the Idlib de-escalation zone by US aircraft or the so-called ‘international coalition’ were recorded,” Konashenkov said. “Secondly, we are not aware of any alleged assistance to the passage of American aviation into the airspace of the Idlib de-escalation zone during this operation.”

Konashenkov argued in his statement that Syrian government backed by Russian air power had defeated ISIL, saying that al-Baghdadi’s death “has absolutely no operational significance on the situation in Syria or on the actions of the remaining terrorists in Idlib”.

Baghdadi died "whimpering and crying" in a raid by US special forces in Northwest Syria, President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday.

Baghdadi killed himself during the raid by detonating a suicide vest after fleeing into a dead-end tunnel, Trump said in a televised address from the White House.

He was positively identified by DNA tests 15 minutes after he died, he said. "He was a sick and depraved man and now he's gone."

‘Announcement of al-Baghdadi killing in US raid may fuel another cycle of violence’
The killing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi by US troops may give a ‘fresh impetus’ to Islamic state and other terrorists in the area, Middle East experts warn.

On Sunday, US president Donald Trump announced that a raid in Syria’s Idlib province resulted in the death of the leader of Islamic State who detonated a suicide vest after being cornered in a dead tunnel.

Under the leadership of the Iraq-born former religion scholar, IS captured large swathes of Iraq and Syria, broke off its ties with al-Qaeda, and emerged as even more violent terrorist organization responsible for bombings, torture and genocide of Yazidi Christians around 2014. Baghdadi was illusive for years, with reports of him being killed popping up occasionally as his “caliphate” was destroyed by joint efforts of Iraqi, Syrian, Russian, American forces with the help of Kurdish and other militia groups.

“The death of him, like bin Laden before him, was significant that it took out a very charismatic leader,” said former Pentagon official Michael Maloof. Yet he expressed concern that it would “give it [IS] a fresh impetus to continue on.”

Middle East expert Nicolas Davies suggests the killing as well as other raids may only inspire some people for more violence.

“In fact, Syria’s research has found that for instance – the study of civilians in conflict – found out that most people join one of these armed groups out of self-protection – to protect themselves, their families or their communities after their lives have been destabilized by these kinds of counter-terrorism operations or invasions of foreign forces,” he argued.

Maloof thinks that a lot depends on who would be the next leader, and whether he would be as charismatic and unifying because various IS fractions have different opinion on who should be the head. He even suggested that the group might unite with al-Qaeda again as the split was due to Baghdadi’s personal fallout with its leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.

There have been reports that Baghdadi’s successor has already assumed symbolic reins over the now defunct “caliphate,” however. Newsweek reported, citing a regional intelligence official, that the new terrorist-in-chief is Abdullah Qardash, the former Iraqi military officer who served under Saddam Hussein. In August, Qardash, also known under alias Hajji Abdullah al-Afari, was allegedly cherry-picked by Baghdadi to be in charge of the terrorist group’s “Muslim affairs.”

The reported death of Baghdadi comes amid an impeachment saga in the US. While the killing of the world’s top warlord could help Trump “temporarily as a foreign policy victory,” it is unlikely to “lessen the fervor of the radical Democrats” to pursue impeachment proceedings, Maloof said.

Moreover, “there might some arguments saying whether this all was “trumped up” to throw everybody off on the impeachment thing,” he noted.

While Trump expressed gratitude to Moscow for facilitating the operation, the Russian Defense Ministry was seemingly taken aback by the US President’s words, saying that it failed to register any US coalition strikes in the Idlib area at the time of the Saturday raid. The US leader’s statement should be taken with a grain of salt, Davies agreed.

“You know these are just gruesome macabre propaganda exercises really when they come before the cameras and announce that they’ve killed ‘the greatest terrorist in the world”

“Well, so maybe the whole thing is pure propaganda. That’s entirely possible,” he added.

Russian MoD doubts Trump’s announcement of killing ISIS chief al-Baghdadi, rejects claims it assisted US forces in op
There’s no credible data to prove a successful American raid took place against Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Russia’s Defense Ministry said. The US coalition didn’t even carry out any airstrikes in Idlib recently.

Earlier, Trump made a rare Sunday address from the White House informing the world that al-Baghdadi was eliminated in northwest Syria in a “daring nighttime raid” with the involvement of US special forces, planes, helicopters and drones. The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) leader met his end “crying and screaming” in the face of the Americans’ might, he said.

But the Russian Defense Ministry insisted that “there were legitimate questions and doubts about the very fact [of the US operation] and, especially, its success.”

Moscow pointed out that it recorded no US coalition airstrikes in the Idlib area in northwest Syria on Saturday when the raid was held.

It also rejected Trump’s claims that Russian forces opened up the airspace under its control in Syria to American planes to facilitate the operation against the IS leader.

The ministry questioned the very possibility of al-Baghdadi’s presence in Idlib as the area is held by Al-Qaeda offshoot, Jabhat al-Nusra, who have always been mortal enemies of Islamic State.

Moscow noted that Islamic State was crushed in Syria in early 2018 in a joint effort by the government in Damascus and the Russian forces, meaning that yet another report of al-Baghdadi’s demise “bears no effect on the operational situation in Syria or on the actions of the remaining terrorists in Idlib.”

French Defense Minister Florence Parly also questioned the significance of the claimed US achievement, pointing out that the raid only marked “an early retirement for a terrorist [al-Baghdadi], but not for his organization.”

World leaders praise al-Baghdadi’s death, warn fight not over, #resistance rages at Trump for talking to Russia
President Donald Trump cheered the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, but not everyone was in a celebratory mood. World leaders were cautiously optimistic, while the anti-Trump #resistance raged as usual.

On Sunday morning Trump revealed that the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) mastermind had met his demise the night before, detonating a suicide vest as American special forces entered his compound in northwestern Syria. The self-proclaimed caliph of a genocidal terrorist organization that once reigned over much of Iraq and Syria, Baghdadi’s death was greeted with triumph by Trump, and cautious celebration from world leaders.

"The death of Baghdadi is an important moment in our fight against terror, but the battle against the evil of Daesh is not yet over,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, using a pejorative name for Baghdadi’s organization. Likewise, French Defense Minister Florence Parly hailed the “early retirement for a terrorist, but not for his organisation.”

Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu were equally congratulatory, with both vowing to assist the US in future counter-terrorist operations.

Russian officials were more skeptical, with the chairman of the upper house of parliament's foreign affairs committee Konstantin Kosachyov cautioning that the death of Baghdadi had been incorrectly announced five times in the past, and warning that “countering terrorism is a much more difficult task than the physical destruction of its leaders.”

Back in Washington, partisan politics entered the fray. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) demanded that the House be briefed on the raid, and complained that “the Russians, but not top congressional leadership were notified.”

Russian forces were warned of the raid so that the Americans could fly low through Syrian airspace they control, Trump claimed, although Moscow said there were no US coalition airstrikes in the Idlib area on Saturday and US aircraft were not flying.

Whatever the case, American and Russian forces in Syria have maintained several “deconfliction” lines of communication, and one might assume warning other armies in the area is the right thing to do to avoid inadvertent clashes.

As for Trump opting not to inform Pelosi and the Democrats, he said he wanted to avoid leaks to the media.

“There's no country in the world that leaks like we do,” he said, “and Washington is a leaking machine.”

Nevertheless, the anti-Trump crowd hammered the president for “indicating that he trusts Russia with this information more than congressional Democrats,” as the Washington Post wrote. The Post also complained that Trump mentioned Russia in his speech before he mentioned the American intelligence community, as did the Twitter #resistance.

Scorched earth: VIDEO shows aftermath of claimed US raid against ISIS leader al-Baghdadi
A building completely reduced to rubble and burnt soil were captured in footage from the site of a claimed US attack on the compound of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Syria.

Earlier on Sunday, Donald Trump made a rare weekend address from the White House, saying that “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead” and thus confirming numerous media reports which had been circulating since morning. The terrorist leader died “whimpering and crying and screaming” as the US special forces, planes, helicopters and drones were sent after him “in a daring nighttime raid,” the president said.

RT’s Ruptly video agency has published footage from the site where the operation against Islamic State supposedly took place. There were no buildings left intact in the footage as they were basically turned into piles of bricks. The cameraman also filmed a minivan that was completely riddled with bullets.

Trump said US planes were flying low and fast to get to the location. However, Russia’s Defense Ministry has questioned Washington’s claims of eliminating al-Baghdadi, saying that it didn’t register any American aerial missions in Syria’s Idlib province where the raid is said to have taken place.

Senior Politician: Trump Using Al-Baghdadi's Death as Token for Election Campaign, US Strengthening ISIL in Afghanistan
TEHRAN (FNA)- Leader of the National Congress Party of Afghanistan Abdul Latif Pedram said the story around the hunt down of ISIL ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi will be used to feed President Donal Trump's election campaign, adding that the US is reinvigorating the terrorist group in Northern Afghanistan.

"Killing of al-Baghdadi will no doubt be used in Trump's election campaign and these incidents are not accidental because the US uses its agents whenever it wants," Pedram, a former presidential candidate, told FNA on Monday.

"This does not mean the end of the ISIL and the group will remain in different countries, including Afghanistan, as a radical group," he added.

Pedram, meantime, warned of the US attempts to destabilize China's trade path by transferring the ISIL terrorists to Northern Afghanistan and igniting a new war in the region.

He also noted that the ISIL has been created by the Americans, themselves, and said, "The regional states, including Syria, Russia, Iran and Iraq, have played a major role in fighting the ISIL."

Trump claimed on Sunday that Baghdadi died "whimpering and crying" in a raid by US special forces in Northwest Syria.

Baghdadi killed himself during the raid by detonating a suicide vest after fleeing into a dead-end tunnel, Trump said in a televised address from the White House.

He was positively identified by DNA tests 15 minutes after he died, he said. "He was a sick and depraved man and now he's gone."

Report: 'Intoxicated' US Marines Arrested in Japan After Attacking Police Cars
TEHRAN (FNA)- Four US marines have been detained in Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture, after three American servicemen attacked two police vehicles, according to local media reports.

Police in Onna were searching for a US marine wanted in connection with a home invasion when two of their vehicles sustained damage from objects hurled by three US servicemen, the Okinawa Times reported.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that the three individuals were intoxicated.

All four US marines were arrested and taken into custody, while the Pentagon has not yet commented on the incident.

Around half of the 54,000 US military personnel in Japan are stationed in Okinawa. A string of crimes committed by US servicemen on the island have made their presence deeply unpopular among locals. In February, residents voted overwhelmingly to move a US military base off the island, but the non-binding referendum was ignored.

Russian FM Lavrov warns US against undermining Syria’s sovereignty in phone call with Pompeo

Steps that undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian state must be avoided, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as the two talked on the phone on Saturday, the foreign ministry said. Earlier this week, American troops were sent to Syria’s northeastern province of Deir ez-Zor with the claimed task of protecting the local oilfields from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists. Moscow decried the move as a violation of international law and reminded that all natural resources in Syria belong to Damascus. Lavrov and Pompeo also discussed separate issues around relations between Moscow and Washington during the conversation initiated by the US side, the ministry added.

Russian MoD says US protects oil smugglers in Syria, offers aerial images as proof
Moscow released photos it claims show the real reason the US wants to keep troops in eastern Syria: to protect the illegal oil trade and reap large profits.

On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry published aerial images of what it said is clear proof of Syrian crude oil being massively smuggled outside of the country “under the strong protection of the US.”

The black and white images are said to show scores of tanker trucks, supposedly loaded with crude oil, scattered in the oil-rich northeastern province of Deir ez-Zor. Dozens of trucks were spotted near the Daman oil-gathering facility, 42km east of the city of Deir ez-Zor, as well as near Mayadin.

A column of 22 fuel trucks was also located in the neighboring Al-Hasakah Province. The images were dated August and September this year.

The trucks taking part in the smuggling operations are being protected by “US troops and the personnel of the US private military companies,” Defense Ministry spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov said.

Whenever a convoy gets attacked, the US special forces and military jets are being called in to defend it.

US President Donald Trump declared that US troops would be pulling out of Syria earlier this month. Pentagon chief Mark Esper, however, later clarified that some soldiers would be deployed to Deir ez-Zor to secure the oil fields from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) militants.

Konashenkov accused the US of trying to keep its foothold in the region, continuing to exploit Syrian resources.

What Washington is doing right now is seizing and holding the oilfields in eastern Syria under its armed control, which is tantamount to international state-sponsored banditry.

The major general further claimed that the revenue from the illegal oil trade goes through the brokerage companies and ultimately lands in the hands of the “American private military contractors and the US security agencies.”

This is the real reason the Pentagon wants to “protect the oilfields in Syria from the mythical ‘ISIS secret cells’ forever,” Konashenkov said.

Tensions in northern Syrian escalated earlier this month after Turkey launched an offensive against Kurdish forces it considers terrorists. Ankara wanted to create a 30-mile safe zone along its border with Syria, but later halted its campaign to allow the US to facilitate the withdrawal of the Kurds.

Meanwhile, Syrian government troops and Russian military police entered the cities of Manbij and Raqqa shortly after the US soldiers left. Turkey and Russia further agreed on joint patrols along the Syrian-Turkish border.

Column of US Troops Returns from Iraq to Syria as Russia Accuses Washington of Smuggling Oil
TEHRAN (FNA)- A column of US troops has returned to Northeastern Syria’s Hasaka province from Iraq as Washington announced relocating troops to oil regions in the war-torn country, Syria's state-run TV reported on Saturday.

The news outlet reported that “the column of American occupation forces entered […] the province through the illegal al-Walid border crossing” and that the column, which includes “dozens of soldiers and military hardware” is covered by US combat helicopters.

Moscow published satellite intelligence images proving that oil from Syria was sent abroad under the guard of US servicemen before and after the defeat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (known as ISIL, ISIS or Daesh) Takfiri militants, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov stated on Saturday.

The oil was smuggled in tanker truck convoys, guarded both by US servicemen and the mercenaries of private military contractors (PMCs), the spokesman declared.

Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump had claimed that the ISIL terrorist group had been 100 percent defeated.

And weeks ago, he pompously declared it was “time to bring our soldiers back home”, and sent nearly 1,000 American military servicemen to Iraq to be later sent to other regional states, and probably back to the US.

Then, he suddenly changed his mind and stated that certain troops will stay, supposedly to prevent the Syrian oil fields falling into the hands of Takfiri militants.

Now it turned out that the United States will send even more troops to the area, to ensure that the oil is “totally secure”.

On Friday, Defense Secretary Mark Esper told other NATO defense ministers in Brussels that the US is “taking some actions ... to strengthen our position at Deir Ezzur, to ensure that we can deny ISIS access to the oil fields”. He also noted that the American contingent in the area would now “include some mechanized forces”. While Esper did not provide any more details on the issue, some media reports suggest that some Abrams tanks might be deployed to the area. The exact number of troops to be sent on this new mission is also still unknown.

While Washington claims that the move is in the line with its alleged anti-terror campaign in Syria, analysts see it no more than an excuse to impose control over Syria's oil revenues, reminding that the US was well informed of the hazards of ISIL's revival when it abandoned the Kurdish militants and paved the ground for Ankara to conduct its long-waited military incursion into Northern Syria.

Moreover, the United States has a long history of salvation of Takfiri militants, where Syrian government forces and fighters were tightening the noose around the terrorists.

The US and its allies invaded Syria in 2014 under the pretext of fighting terrorism, without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate. Damascus has repeatedly accused Washington of carrying out an illegal occupation of its sovereign territory.

The Damascus government has reiterated that any foreign troops in Syria is regarded as an occupying force and the Syrian government has the right to take all the needed measures to confront it.

Russia Releases Satellite Images Confirming US Smuggling of Syrian Oil [+PHOTOS]
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian Defense Ministry published satellite intelligence images proving that oil from Syria was sent abroad under the guard of US servicemen before and after the defeat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (known as ISIL, ISIS or Daesh) Takfiri militants, Defense Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov stated on Saturday.

The defense ministry said that "the space intelligence images showed that oil was actively extracted and massively exported for processing outside Syria, under the reliable protection of American troops, before and after the defeat of the Daesh terrorists", RIA Novosti reported.

Pentagon Chief Mark Esper noted on Friday that the United States intends to take measures in the near future to strengthen positions in the Syrian Deir Ezzur region to prevent terrorists from accessing oil fields. According to him, the United States is studying how to move forces in the region, "to ensure the safety of oil fields".

Konashenkov noted that the US' stated goal of protecting Syrian oil fields from Daesh militants could not be farther from the truth.

“What Washington does now – the capture and holding under its armed control of oil fields in Eastern Syria is, simply speaking, an international state banditism,” he said, adding that Syrian oil reserves and other mineral resources belong solely to the Syrian Arab Republic, not to Daesh terrorists or to “American protectors from Daesh terrorists”.

“Neither international law, nor the American legislation itself can justify the US troops’ goal to guard Syrian hydrocarbon reserves from Syria itself and its people,” the statement read.

Citing intelligence obtained via Russian Defence Ministry surveillance satellites, both before and after the Daesh defeat North of the Euphrates, Syrian oil was being actively extracted and smuggled to other countries, while being guarded by US soldiers.

The oil was smuggled in tanker truck convoys, guarded both by US servicemen and the mercenaries of private military contractors (PMCs), the spokesman declared.

“Meanwhile, Washington imposed sanctions on shipping hydrocarbons to Syria, which spans not only US companies, but everyone else,” the statement said.

Despite that, oil extraction is being conducted using equipment provided by "leading Amercian corporations", Konashenkov noted, adding that in case of an attack on convoys, the US military immediately calls upon special operations forces and its air force for protection.

According to the statement, oil extraction was conducted by a US-controlled company, created under the so-called “Autonomous Administration of East Syria”.

The smuggling revenue went through intermediary companies to US intelligence agency and PMC bank accounts, he stressed.

“Considering one barrel of Syrian oil costs $38, the monthly revenue of this ‘private enterprise’ of US intelligence agencies is more than $30 million,” the statement read, adding, “For such a constant flow of cash, free of state control and taxes, Pentagon and Langley management will be ready to guard Syrian oil wells from ‘hidden Daesh cells’ indefinitely.”

On 13 October, Esper said the US will withdraw all of its force of 1,000 soldiers from Northeastern Syria. On 25 October, he noted that the US would maintain a "reduced presence" in Syria, citing concerns about Daesh terrorists taking control of the oil fields. His words contradict the administration of President Donald Trump, which announced earlier this year that Daesh had been 100 percent defeated.

Ditch Kurds, Grab Oil? Trump Says US ‘Never Committed’ to Syrian Allies, But SecDef Says Washington Still Committed to Oil
TEHRAN (FNA)- President Donald Trump stated that the US never committed to the security of Kurds in Northern Syria, ahead of the end of the Turkish ceasefire. His defense secretary meanwhile noted that the US troops had a job to “secure the oil”.

“We never gave a commitment to the Kurds,” Trump told reporters during a cabinet meeting on Monday, RT reported.

While the presence of US troops in Northern Syria guaranteed the safety of Kurdish militias operating there, Trump defended his decision to pull the troops out, and even appeared sympathetic to the Turkish argument that these militias are “terrorists”.

“You have to look both ways,” Trump told reporters.

“Plenty of Turks have been killed because of conflict on their borders,” he added, repeating his assertion that the Kurds are “no angels”.

Turkey’s military operation against the Kurds, dubbed ‘Peace Spring’, was launched following the withdrawal of a small number of US troops stationed in the region. Amid international backlash, Trump insisted that protecting the Kurds was not the job of the US, but also threatened Turkey with economic sanctions if the operation continued.

The operation was paused last Thursday for five days to give the beleaguered Kurds a chance to withdraw from Turkey’s planned ‘safe zone’ along the border. The peace has been a fragile one, however, with both sides accusing each other of breaking the truce. Nevertheless, Trump told reporters on Monday that “the ceasefire’s holding”.

The initial withdrawal on October 9 was followed by reports that hundreds of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, ISIS or Daesh) prisoners had escaped from Kurdish prison camps amid the chaos of the Turkish incursion. Responding to critics on Monday, Trump boasted that it was his administration that oversaw their capture in the first place.

"I’m the one who did the capturing. I’m the one who knows more about it than you people or the fake pundits," he said.

The future of the 1,000 or so American troops in Syria has remained unclear since the withdrawal was announced, and conflicting reports have circulated as to whether some will stay in Syria to protect its oil facilities.

Trump stated on Monday that they will all be removed and deployed elsewhere in the region before eventually coming home. However, Defense Secretary Mark Esper noted earlier that some may remain behind to guard Syrian oil fields from possible seizure by ISIL fighters.

“We have troops in towns in Northeast Syria that are located next to the oil fields, the troops in those towns are not in the present phase of withdrawal,” Esper told reporters in Afghanistan on Monday.

Even if Trump follows through with a complete pullout, some of the troops withdrawn may simply relocate to Iraq.

Meanwhile, as Trump touts his withdrawal as a move towards ending the US’ “endless wars” in the Middle East, thousands of American troops are preparing to deploy to Saudi Arabia, to guard its oil wealth against perceived “Iranian aggression”.

At the cabinet meeting, the president questioned what US troops were doing on Syrian land in the first place. He had no such qualms about the Saudi deployment, however, as he said that “Saudi Arabia has agreed to pay us for everything we’re doing”.

"Russia has never colonized any country. Russia has never pushed any country to a relationship that would seek to exploit the mineral wealth, the natural resources,”

Over 500 agreements worth $12 billion inked at Russia-Africa forum

The first ever Russia-Africa economic forum, which kicked off on Wednesday, has resulted in hundreds of deals and agreements, Russian Presidential Adviser Anton Kobyakov said.

According to him, more than 35 official events and 1,500 meetings took place in Sochi, the resort city where the summit was held.

“The total amount of agreements sealed as of this moment was more than eight hundred billion rubles ($12 billion),” Kobyakov said, adding that the meetings are continuing.

The Russia-Africa Economic Forum brought more than 50 African leaders to Sochi. Eight major African integration associations and organizations also took part in the event.

Lack of colonial baggage & investment in peace put Russia ahead of other players on African continent, SA minister tells RT

The time is right for Russia to sit with African leaders and companies in order to forge economic relationships and partnerships, South Africa’s Minister of State and Security Ayanda Dlodlo told RT.
“What becomes important for us is to acknowledge the fact that Russia has never colonized any country. Russia has never pushed any country to a relationship that would seek to exploit the mineral wealth, the natural resources,” Dlodlo said in an interview on the sidelines of the first ever Russia-Africa summit in Sochi.

FARSNEWS2019/9/13
TEHRAN (FNA)- After talks with the Taliban to end to the US ‘forever war’ were killed off by Washington last week, the Afghan militant movement is prepared to fight the “imposed” conflict for another hundred years, its chief negotiator stated.

The year-long peace process was shut down by President Donald Trump just days ahead of a formal signed agreement. The draft had even been initialed by both parties, top Taliban negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai told RT.

He added that he does not see the US decision as set in stone, however, and said the group remains committed to negotiations.

“Our stance is that there is no solution to the conflict except negotiations and except peace on the table,” Stanikzai stated, noting, “We hope that Mr. Trump rethinks his announcement and comes back to where we were.”

The talks were ostensibly called off over a Taliban car bombing that killed a US soldier stationed in Kabul last week – along with nearly a dozen Afghan civilians – with Trump abruptly cancelling a planned meeting with the militant group at Camp David. The Taliban argues their bombings are a justified response to ongoing attacks by American and Afghan forces, and insist they are defending their land from a hostile foreign occupier.

"The war was imposed on us. It is American soldiers who are in Afghanistan. It’s not our mujahedeen in Washington," he said.

Stanikzai was skeptical about the president's reason for stopping the talks, arguing it clashed with statements by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who appeared on TV the following day and bragged that the US had killed “over 1,000 Taliban” over the previous ten days, even as the negotiations progressed.

“If they can kill a thousand of us, why can we not kill one or two of them?” Stanikzai asked, adding that “this is our right. We have to defend ourselves and defend our people”.

The Taliban representative stated that Trump has failed to distinguish himself from his predecessor Barack Obama, who also attempted peace talks with the Afghan militants before changing course at the last moment. He questioned Washington’s commitment to ending what is now a 19-year-long counter-insurgency, and vowed to continue fighting as long as there is a US presence.

"We can do it for a hundred years," he added.

Only after a formal agreement is signed and American troops are pulled out of Afghanistan can the Taliban settle its differences with other Afghan political factions, including the US-backed government in Kabul, Stanikzai said, calling for “inter-Afghan talks” and a “comprehensive ceasefire”.

The Taliban delegation visited Moscow this week as part of regular meetings with Russian officials, which have continued parallel to the American talks with the militant group brokered by Qatar.

The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City and Washington, DC. US officials accused the Taliban of harboring members of Al-Qaeda, the terrorist group behind the infamous attack. The war has dragged on for nearly two decades, and has cost American taxpayers some some $877 billion dollars as of March 2019. This includes both fighting the Taliban and trying to rebuild what was left in its wake.

‘We can fight Americans for 100 years,’ Taliban tells RT after scrapped peace talks
After talks with the Taliban to end to the US ‘forever war’ were killed off by Washington last week, the Afghan militant movement is prepared to fight the “imposed” conflict for another hundred years, its chief negotiator told RT.

The year-long peace process was shut down by President Donald Trump just days ahead of a formal signed agreement. The draft had even been initialed by both parties, top Taliban negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai told RT. War is imposed on us by US, we can fight it for 100 years, Taliban tells RT after talks cut off
Talks with the Taliban to put an end to the longest of America’s forever wars were killed off by the US last week. The Afghan militant movement is prepared to fight a hundred more years, its chief negotiator told RT.

The peace negotiations between the US and the Taliban were called off by President Donald Trump days ahead of a planned signing of a formal agreement. The draft has even been initialed by both parties and Qatar, which mediated in the talks, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, who headed the Taliban’s delegation, told RT. As far as the Taliban is concerned, the US decision can be easily reversed and the agreement put into force as agreed, he said.

“We are still committed to the negotiations. Our stance is that there is no solution to the conflict except negotiations and except peace on the table. We hope that Mr. Trump rethinks his announcement and comes back to where we were,” the official said.

Trump cited an attack by the Taliban, which killed a US soldier stationed in Afghanistan, as the reason for the surprise cancellation of the talks. The militants say their attacks were well justified by attacks against them by the US and the Afghan security forces. They see the Americans as a foreign occupying force and themselves as freedom fighters and protectors of the Afghan civilians, who are injured and killed when the US attacks the Taliban, which regularly conducts terrorist attacks.

“The war was imposed on us. It is American soldiers who are in Afghanistan. It’s not our mujahedeen in Washington,” he said. He added that Trump’s justification for stopping talks clashed with statements by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who appeared on TV the following day and said the US killed “over 1,000 Taliban” over ten prior days, as negotiations were under way.

“Mr. Pompeo admitted that they have killed a thousand Taliban,” Stanikzai pointed out. “If they can kill a thousand of us, why can we not kill one or two of them? This is our right. We have to defend ourselves and defend our people.”

The Taliban representative said the Trump administration proved to be no different to that of Barack Obama, which also held peace talks with the Afghan militants before ending them at the last moment. He questioned Washington’s commitment to resolving the situation and ending what is now a 19-year-long anti-insurgency war that the US apparently cannot win through military force.

“If the American side is not willing to negotiate and they do not want peace on the table, we will be compelled to defend ourselves,” he said.

We can do it for a hundred years.

Stanikzai reiterated that only after a formal agreement is signed and US troops are pulled out of Afghanistan would the Taliban be able to settle its differences with other political forces in Afghanistan, including the US-backed government in Kabul.

“We need a practical thing. When it is signed, there will be [a] ceasefire between us and the American forces. We will give safe passage to the American forces,” he said. “When they go out, inter-Afghan talks can start and a comprehensive ceasefire and other domestic issues can be discussed.”

Taliban threatens US with jihad, seizes more land in Afghanistan after failed peace talks
The Taliban has taken over another district in Afghanistan, the second in two weeks, saying that the US will “regret” abandoning key peace talks that stalled after Donald Trump called off a much-awaited meeting with the group.

Yangi Qala, a district in Afghanistan’s northern province of Takhar, fell into the hands of Taliban fighters on Tuesday after government troops retreated over fear of greater casualties, local authorities told the media. They sent reinforcements in order to drive the Taliban out of the area, claiming that dozens of militants were killed.

But the seizure of the district, which lies close to the border of Russia’s military ally Tajikistan, comes days after the Taliban made another advance by capturing the Anar Darah neighborhood in western Afghanistan.

The news follows a recent decision by Trump to cancel a meeting with Taliban representatives at Camp David, asking the group if they are ready for the next few decades of war. The US president said he canceled the meeting after the Taliban claimed responsibility for attacks in Kabul which killed 12 people, including one US soldier, earlier in the week.

On its part, the Taliban warned that the US will suffer heavy losses for ditching the key talks, yet the takeovers seem to be a continuation of their stick-and-carrot tactics.

Later on Tuesday, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid reiterated the threat, saying that Washington will regret not getting back to the table. The Islamist group, he said, will resume jihad and fighting to end the foreign occupation of Afghanistan.

In recent years, US negotiators held several rounds of low-key talks with the militants in their political office in Doha, Qatar, providing some opening for a possible truce. But it remains to be seen if it could be reached at all, given that the Taliban frequently target local and foreign forces, sometimes taking control of important cities and locations.

Initially decimated in the post-9/11 US airstrikes and the subsequent Western intervention, the Taliban made a resurgence and hit back, gradually expanding influence in the east, west and south of the country.

Now, they control more swathes of land in Afghanistan than at any point since 2001. An interactive map by the Long War journal shows the sizeable amount of territory the Taliban hold or contest.

As the talks stalled and fighting continued, top US officials voiced pessimism over the Afghan exit strategy. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged this week that the peace process is dead “for the time being,” adding that Washington is looking for “significant commitments” from the militant group.

China Invites Taliban, Afghan Officials for Two-Day Talks
TEHRAN (FNA)- China invited Taliban representatives to participate in a two-day intra-Afghan conference in Beijing after negotiations between the group and the United States to end years of war in Afghanistan collapsed last month.

Suhail Shaheen, a Taliban Political Spokesman, said on Wednesday that Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban's co-founder, met with Chinese diplomats in Doha, where the group has a political office, Al-Jazeera reported.

"China has invited a delegation ... to participate in the intra-Afghan dialogue," Shaheen added, as the conference will take place on October 29 and 30.

It would be separate from talks between the US and the Taliban, which spent the past year negotiating a deal that would have seen the US pull thousands of troops from Afghanistan in return for various security guarantees.

Last month, President Donald Trump called an end to the talks with the Taliban after the group carried out a bomb attack in Kabul that killed 12 people, including a US soldier.

The deal would have paved the way for separate talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government to search for an end to the conflict.

The Taliban has refused to talk to the government, denouncing it as a US puppet, but government officials have taken part in the intra-Afghan dialogue as private citizens.

Shaheen stated that the talks in China would be held on that basis, noting, "All participants will be attending the meeting in their personal capacity and they will share their personal opinions for solving the Afghan issue."

There was no immediate reaction from the administration of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, and Shaheen told AFP news agency "it is not yet clear" whether government officials would attend, noting only lower-level officials should be included in the guest list.

A spokesman for former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who attended intra-Afghan talks in Russia in February, said Karzai's office was aware of China's plan for talks and Karzai would attend if invited.

A 60-strong delegation of Afghans, including government officials and representatives of civil society groups, held a second round of intra-Afghan talks with the Taliban in July in Qatar.

China shares a 76-kilometre (47-mile) border with the extreme Northeastern tip of Afghanistan, in a mountainous area called the Wakhan Corridor on the Afghan side.

Foreign-Instigated Color Revolutions Fuel Global Unrest: China Says in Veiled Attack on US

Foreign-Instigated Color Revolutions Fuel Global Unrest: China Says in Veiled Attack on US
TEHRAN (FNA)- Beijing has taken a not-so-subtle swipe at Washington, lambasting unnamed countries for using color revolutions and “big sticks” to meddle in the internal affairs of China and other nations.

Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe took aim at the United States – without calling out Washington by name – during an address at the Xiangshan Forum, China’s annual conference on security and defense issues, on Monday, RT reported.

"Wanton interference in other countries’ affairs will never win. Interfering in other countries’ domestic affairs, instigating a color revolution or even attempts to subvert the legitimate governments of other countries are the real causes of wars and unrest in different regions [around the world]," he stated.

Without getting into specifics, he decried nations which “wield their big sticks”, such as sanctions, to exert “maximum pressure” on their rivals.

“The Chinese people don’t buy such intimidation and we are not afraid [to fight],” he added.

Beijing has repeatedly accused Washington of playing a role in the ongoing protests that have rocked Hong Kong since March, going so far as to accuse the United States of being “insanely involved” in the semi-autonomous territory.

The Chinese foreign ministry has issued regular warnings to its American counterparts, telling the Trump administration that it should not “stick their noses in our affairs”.

The White House “firmly rejects” the notion that the US is sponsoring or inciting the demonstrations. Originally motivated by a now-suspended bill that would have allowed the extradition of criminal suspects to mainland China, the increasingly violent protests have taken a broader anti-Beijing angle.

Iran Confirms Report on Mediation between Tehran, Riyadh
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Abbas Mousavi confirmed on Tuesday that third-party states are holding talks with Tehran for resolving conflicts between the Islamic Republic and Saudi Arabia.

Speaking in an interview with Anadolu news agency, Mousavi confirmed that some back-channel efforts are underway by certain states which "have voiced their interest in bringing the viewpoints of Tehran and Riyadh closer to each other, deescalate the situation and remove misunderstandings in a bid to prevent third-parties from misusing the Iran-KSA disagreements".

He voiced Tehran’s readiness for talks, adding that his country holds that resolution of disputes will have benefits for both countries, nations, and the region and even the whole world.

Mousavi underlined that Iran and Saudi Arabia are the two major countries in the Islamic world and disputes between them can have negative consequences for the whole region.

He once again repeated Tehran’s initiative that the Hormuz Peace Endeavor (HOPE) is open to all countries of the region including Saudi Arabia.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif voiced his readiness for a visit to the Saudi capital city of Riyadh for settling bilateral disputes between the Islamic Republic and the kingdom, reiterating that Tehran has always been a supporter of regional peace and cooperation.

“If suitable conditions are provided, I would be ready to travel to Riyadh to settle differences” between the two countries, Zarif said, answering a question posed by Yemen’s Arabic-language al-Masirah news agency on the sidelines of a conference held in Tehran themed “Unilateralism and International Law”.

"Tehran welcomes any initiative that aims to ease tensions in the region and will cooperate [with other parties] to end Yemen’s war," he added.

Zarif once again reiterated the Islamic Republic's policy for supporting the Yemeni people, saying, "Iran will always stand by the Yemeni nation and we believe that the end of war will first of all help the Yemeni people."

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian foreign minister said he is in constant contact with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan in relation to developments in Yemen.

Later on Monday, Zarif visited an industrial complex in Tehran Province, on the sidelines of which he talked to reporters, further explaining about his readiness to visit Saudi Arabia.

"Nothing new has happened. We have always been ready to travel to neighboring countries and to go to neighboring countries," Iran's foreign minister said.

"The Islamic Republic's [friendship] hand has been always extended toward regional countries and if there are [necessary] grounds and neighboring countries are also ready for cooperation, we will definitely be prepared [to do this]," Zarif pointed out.

Earlier this month, Pakistani prime minister made an official visit to Tehran and held talks with President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei where the issue of Saudi Arabia’s aggression against Yemen was thoroughly discussed.

Ayatollah Khamenei, during the meeting with Khan, underlined that a legitimate end to the ongoing war waged by Saudi Arabia and its allies on Yemen can have positive impacts on the region, and said Tehran’s plan is a suitable solution to the ongoing crisis there.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has for a long time presented a four-point plan to end the war in Yemen," the Leader added.

"The end of this war in the proper way can have positive effects on the region,” the Supreme Leader added.

The Supreme Leader, meantime, lauded Pakistan’s concern about the establishment of peace and security in the region, and said that West Asia is a "very sensitive and critical" region.

Ayatollah Khamenei also expressed regret over the destructive role played by “some regional countries” through their support for terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria and causing war and bloodshed in Yemen.

“We have no motivation for being hostile toward these countries, but they are under the influence of America and act against the Islamic Republic of Iran in line with what America desires,” he added.

The Supreme Leader emphasized that the Islamic Republic has never initiated any war, saying, "If someone starts a war against Iran, they will undoubtedly regret it."

In April 2015, Zarif submitted a four-point peace plan for Yemen to the United Nations in an attempt to end the bloodshed in the Arab country.

"It is imperative for the international community to get more effectively involved in ending the senseless aerial attacks and establishing a ceasefire," Zarif said in the letter.

He added in the letter that Tehran is ready to cooperate with the UN “to facilitate and encourage an immediate end to these senseless bombardments and initiation of a genuine dialogue to find a political solution to this tragic crisis”.

Syrian Democratic Council Seeking Union with Damascus after US Betrayal
TEHRAN (FNA)- Co-Chair of the Syrian Democratic Council Riad Hammoud Darar, after being disappointed by the US, said that the council is now pursuing real cooperation with Damascus to achieve an understanding that would bring stability to the country.

Darar, who co-chairs the Syrian Democratic Council (the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces, which is largely comprised of Kurdish militias), in an interview with the Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar, said that the rapid developments in Northern and Eastern Syria will cost more territorial disintegration of Syria in favor of Turkey’s interests, adding that the US offered new land to Turkey to rectify its strained relationship with Ankara and return it to NATO.

He added that the agreement between the US and Russia is based on the fact that the resolution of the Syrian crisis will be achieved in a step-by-step process which would require all sides give up their extreme positions.

"Syrian democratic forces have always been discussing future relations with Damascus in order to reach a real and meaningful cooperation that would provide stability and give all Syrian groups and tribes the right they deserve," he said.

Darar emphasized that the experience of autonomy and self-management which was used to fill the administrative void in Northeast Syria is subject to debate and reform to achieve a mutually beneficial structure fit for all parties.

The head of the Syrian Democratic Council voiced hope that Russia’s mediation would lead to agreements that would reward them political contribution and participation through fair and respectful elections.

“The [new] accord that allows the Syrian army to enter into Kurdish-controlled areas is to promote the constructive role of the Syrian Armed Forces in protecting its sovereignty and borders, and Syrian democratic forces will ultimately be part of the Syria's National Army,” he highlighted.

On the other hand, Commander the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Kobani met with a Russian delegation on Monday at the Qamishli airport in al-Hasakah province. The delegation’s visit to Qamishli was for conveying the Kurdish demands to Damascus and strengthening military cooperation between the Syrian government and the Kurds, having an eye on the possibility of converting it into a comprehensive agreement.

A Kurdish official, in an interview with al-Akhbar, said that the US decision to keep part of its troops on Syrian soil was meant to encourage Kurds not to give Damascus more concessions.

Al-Akhbar wrote that considering fast developments undergoing in Northeast Syria and with the truce between Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces looming to its final hours, all eyes are now set on a meeting between the Turkish and Russian presidents who are expected to lay out plans for the future of North and East Syria.

While the Kurds are optimistic about the new US position on keeping some of its troops in Northern Syria, they also feel concerned about an imminent military operation by Ankara to threaten areas along Ras al-Ain to al-Maliki, and even reach the borderline between Syria and Iraq through Al-Maliki and even extend its reach to Deir Ezzur and al-Raqqa.

According to the report by the Lebanese paper, if Turkey continues to press on, Washington will give up its decision to stay close to oil wells, which will put the Kurds back on track with the Syrian government. However, Kurdish sources familiar with the course of meetings between the Russians and the Kurds believe that the situation is not going to escalate significantly and Russia is trying to broker an agreement in a near future to secure the border with Turkey at al-Hasakah.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington will deploy a small number of its troops in Syria, near the border with Jordan.

"US forces leaving Syria will initially be moved to other areas but will eventually return to the United States," he added.

"The US has never promised to stay in Syria for 400 years to support the Kurds," Trump said.

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on Monday that some units of Washington’s troops may remain in the areas near the oil fields in Northeast Syria to protect them against possible attacks by the ISIL and extremist groups.

Al-Akhbar added that although Esper did not specify a time limit for the deployment of troops in Syria, his statement indicates that they remain at their bases near the Conoco, Al-Amar and Remilan oilfields in Deir Ezzur and al-Hasaka.
