Bolton Faction behind Attacks on Japanese Tankers

FARSNEWS2019/9/3
Jamal Wakim: Bolton Faction behind Attacks on Japanese Tankers
TEHRAN (FNA)- Jamal Wakim, Professor at the Lebanese University, says the US National Security Adviser tries to escalate the situation in Persian Gulf, against the US President’s will who got his Japanese counterpart to mediate.

In an exclusive interview with FNA, he commented on the UK’s move to send warship to the Persian Gulf, saying, “The UK has always been a very close ally of the US, it was them (the US) who pressured the UK to declare its intentions to send a marine force to the [Persian] Gulf region. The US is trying through this to set a seal to the escalation by putting the British in confrontation with the Iranians.”

Jamal Wakim is a Professor of International Relations at the Lebanese University. Also, he has worked as a reporter and correspondent for various Middle East media outlets, including Dubai Television, Azzerman Kuwaiti Magazine and New Television Beirut. He has published a number of articles on topics related to Syria and to the history of Arab-Islamic Civilization.

Below is the full text of the interview:

Q: The UK sends warships to Persian Gulf, and has record-high arms sales to Saudi Arabia. Is London benefiting from the tension in this region?

A: The UK has always been a very close ally of the US, especially after WWII. After the Brexit referendum, London got even closer to Washington. So it was the officials of the latter who pressured the British officials to capture the Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar, and it was them who pressured the UK to declare its intentions to send a marine force to the [Persian] Gulf region. The US is trying through this to set a seal to the escalation by putting the British in confrontation with the Iranians. This would keep any Iranian response contained, and at the same time it would spare the US from any embarrassment from direct Iranian reprisal against US provocative moves while still limiting expenses of direct American military deployment. This would achieve the major American objective of obstructing Iran’s access to the Indian ocean, and help implement American grand strategy of blocking all Eurasian powers, namely Russia, China and Iran from having access to maritime trade routes.

Q: While Japanese PM was meeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Japanese tankers were targeted. Why do you think the attacks were done at that particular time?

A: The move was well planned to destroy Iran’s relations with Japan, especially that Iran maintains good relations with that country. So, the targeting of the Japanese tanker aimed at failing the Japanese initiative to mediate the crisis, at destroying Iranian- Japanese relations, and at embarrassing Iran at the international scene by portraying it as a rogue nation that does not respect diplomatic protocols and international laws. I believe that most probably it was the Bolton faction in the US which was responsible for failing the Japanese efforts as it is the one that is trying to escalate the situation in the [Persian] Gulf. It is less probable that it was Trump’s faction that was responsible for this act as it was the one that was trying to open talks through the Japanese with the Iranian side.

Q: It has been proved that both the US drone that was shot down and the UK ship that was detained by Iran had crossed into Iranian territories before they were confronted by Tehran. Why do they continue such offences?

A: The US and its allies are trying to test the limits of Iran’s tolerance, this is why they tried to make provocations to see how far Iran would go in its response. At the same time, the US wants to accuse Iran of provocations as it is trying to install a maritime force under its command to control the path of Hormuz, and it is trying to get approval of the international community by trying to accuse Iran of violating international law. If it succeeds in convincing a wide section of the international community of this claim, then it could install this international maritime force even without passing through the UN security council where Iran enjoys the backing of Russia and China that might revert to using the right to veto. If the US succeeds in installing this force, it could make it save lot of expenses which would be divided by the participating countries. At the same time, it will ensure that any future Iranian response to future provocations, would put the international community on the opposite side.

Zarif to Discuss Tel Aviv’s Attacks on Arab Countries in Moscow
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who is visiting the Russian capital city of Moscow, is slated to hold high-level talks on a diverse area of issues, particularly the recent attacks of Israel on positions in the 3 Arab countries of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is in the Russian capital of Moscow for high-level talks on a wide range of issues, including the recent Israeli assaults on regional countries.

"In addition to bilateral talks on bilateral cooperation, we will hold talks [with Russians] on regional issues" such as the Israeli regime's recent assaults against regional states, Zarif told reporters upon arrival in Moscow on Sunday.

In his Sunday comments, Zarif highlighted other subjects to be discussed during his Monday talks with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

"We are on the verge of the Astana talks in Turkey, and there is a need for coordination. We also need coordination on the Yemen issue."

He said the "serious developments in Afghanistan" will also be on the agenda of his Monday talks.

"Iran's special envoys for Afghanistan, Yemen, and Syria are in the delegation visiting Russia, and will hold talks with their counterparts," Zarif added.

The top diplomat said he will also brief the Russian "friends" on the latest developments regarding the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive plan of Action (JCPOA), particularly the recent talks held in France.

"We have common stances on the JCPOA with Russia and China and many other global developments," he said.

Israeli artillery units struck the Southern part of Lebanon Sunday afternoon shortly after an Israeli drone violated the Lebanese airspace, and dropped incendiary material that sparked a fire in a forest at the border.

Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported that Israeli forces launched several 155-millimeter shells on the Jabal al-Rous area in the occupied Shebaa Farms and Kfarchouba Hills.

After Israel's aggression, Hezbollah targeted an Israeli military vehicle near the border with the occupied Palestinian lands, killing and injuring all forces on board.

Last week, Israel hit targets in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

Last Monday, Iraq’s pro-government Popular Mobilization Units, commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi, said that Israel was behind a recent deadly drone attack that killed two people near the Syrian border.

Two unmanned aircraft carried out air raids on an area about 15 km (9 miles) away from Iraq's border with Syria on last Sunday.

"As part of the string of Zionist attacks on Iraq, the evil Israeli crows have returned to target the Hashd al-Sha’abi, this time with two drones inside Iraqi territory," the group said in a statement.

The air raids are the latest in a series of attacks that have targeted positions of Hashd al-Sha’abi forces across Iraq over the past months.

The attacks began on July 19 when a drone dropped explosives onto a PMU base near the town of Amerli, in Salahuddin Province, killing at least one resistance fighter and injuring four others.

Lebanese Army says it fired at Israeli drones ‘breaching airspace’
The Lebanese Army said it opened fire on Israeli drones that “breached” its airspace near the southern border. It follows the crash of two Israeli drones in Beirut, which the nation’s PM called an “open attack on sovereignty.”

The army said it shot at the aircraft on Wednesday afternoon, which media reports placed near the border town of Al-Adaysa.

The first pair of drones spotted left Lebanese airspace after the army fired on one of them, while a third was seen less than an hour later. It, too, returned to Israel after being fired upon.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces confirmed in a statement on Twitter that the drones were fired, but stopped short of saying they entered Lebanese airspace.

“Gunfire was heard inside Lebanese territory towards an area where IDF drones flew overhead,”said the spokesman, Avijaa Adraei. “The drones completed their mission and there was no damage.”

Two Israeli ‘suicide drones’ crashed near the Lebanese capital on Sunday, apparently attempting to target Hezbollah facilities. One drone failed to detonate, while the other damaged the militant group’s media headquarters.

Prime Minister Saad Hariri denounced the drone incursion as a “threat to regional stability and an attempt to increase tensions,” but added that the unmanned vehicles were not shot down by Lebanese forces.

Lebanese Prime Minister Asks Russian Foreign Minister to Prevent Escalation of Israel-Lebanon Row - Moscow
Tensions between Lebanon and Israel took another turn on 26 August after Israel reportedly carried out airstrikes against a Palestinian group's positions near Beirut and the town of Qousaya. Lebanese President Michel Aoun later called the attacks a "declaration of war".

Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri has asked Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to prevent Israeli-Lebanese tensions from escalation in a phone conversation.

Israeli PM Netanyahu Warns Hezbollah, Lebanon, and Iranian Leaders To Watch Their Actions
On Monday, Iran warned Israel of "grave consequences" over its "aggressive actions" amid airstrikes in Syria on targets that Prime Minister Netanyahu referred to as Iranian.

The Israeli prime minister issued a warning on Tuesday to the leaders of Hezbollah, Iran, and Lebanon, telling them to "be careful of what they say and watch their actions".

In particular, Netanyahu singled out Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, urging him “to calm down” amid the latter's warning of an imminent response to the crash of two Israeli UAVs near Hezbollah’s headquarters in the suburbs of Beirut.

"I heard what Nasrallah said. I suggest to Nasrallah to calm down. He knows well that Israel knows how to defend itself and to pay back its enemies", Netanyahu said in a speech.

On Sunday, two Israeli drones crashed near Hezbollah’s headquarters, causing significant damage to the press service building and injuring three people.

Lebanon decried the incident as an Israeli "attack" on the country's sovereignty. Beirut has long condemned Israel for violating the sovereignty of the nation by conducting raids in Lebanese airspace.

Israel, in its turn, views Lebanon’s Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation and one of its principal adversaries in the region.

Moreover, Israel confirmed on Sunday that it had carried out airstrikes on what it referred to as "Iranian Quds Force operatives and Shiite militia targets" in Syria to foil a purported attack by multiple drones on the Jewish state.

A senior Iranian official has denied that the country’s forces were hit in the air raid.

Lebanon, Iraq, Iran call out Israel's 'declaration of war' after it bombs 3 COUNTRIES in one weekend
Lebanon, Iraq and Iran have declared recent Israeli aggression as an act of war after attacks on Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq over the weekend, promising devastating retaliation if the violence continues.

A pair of kamikaze drone attacks on Beirut’s southern suburbs on Sunday and a drone strike on Palestinian militia in the Bekaa Valley early on Monday morning were akin to “a declaration of war,” Lebanese President Michel Aoun told the United Nations Special Coordinator on Monday, adding that the aggression “allows us to resort to our right to defending our sovereignty.”

The international community must reject Israel’s “blatant violation” of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Lebanon and Israel, PM Saad al-Hariri implored ambassadors from the UN Security Council’s permanent members. “Any escalation could develop into a regional cycle of violence that nobody can predict the extent of.”

And any Israeli drones overflying Lebanon will be shot out of the sky, Hezbollah Secretary-General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah warned Tel Aviv. “Hezbollah will tolerate no more Israeli drones penetrating Lebanese airspace,” he declared on Sunday after an explosive-laden drone took out Hezbollah’s media center in Beirut.

Nor was Lebanon the only nation to draw the line at the eruption of Israeli aggression over the weekend. A powerful bloc in Iraq’s parliament has demanded US troops leave the country after a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran-allied Shiite militias known as Popular Mobilization Units over the past week.

The Fatah Coalition holds the US “fully responsible” for the Israeli attacks, “which we consider to be a declaration of war on Iraq and its people,” it said in a statement on Monday after yet another drone strike killed a PMU commander in the western town of al-Qaim. US troops, the coalition insists, are “no longer needed” in Iraq.

And in Syria, Israeli missiles attacked several targets outside Damascus over the weekend, killing at least two in what the IDF claimed was a pre-emptive strike against a “large-scale attack of multiple killer drones on Israel” by Iran – ironically, a larger version of what they themselves were preparing to inflict on Lebanon.

“Israel will pay a high price for its actions,” Ali Rabiei, spokesman for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, told reporters on Monday, calling the bombings “black stains on track records of this regime.” He praised the words of his regional allies, noting they “send a clear and severe message to the Zionist regime that its brazen acts of aggression will not go unanswered.”

Israel has ramped up its assaults on regional foes as PM Benjamin Netanyahu heads into what promises to be a close election – a re-do of April’s contest which saw him slightly edge out challenger (and former IDF head) Benny Gantz, but fail to form a coalition government afterwards. Netanyahu has warned that retaliation by Hezbollah will be met with attacks on the Lebanese state as a whole, and boasted last week that he had given the IDF “a free hand” to “thwart Iran’s plans” – which has so far equated to bombing its allies in three countries.

SPUTNIK2019/8/26
Iran Warns Israel of Consequences of 'Aggression Against Syria, Lebanon, Iraq'
The statement comes hours after the chief of Iran's Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, took to Twitter to say that Israeli airstrikes in Syria and the crash of two alleged Israeli drones in Lebanon "were the last struggles" of Israel.

Iranian authorities have issued an ominous warning to Israel, saying that it should understand that its recent "aggressive actions" in the region will have consequences, as Iraq, Syria and Lebanon have the right for self-defence.

"Israel must understand the consequences of its aggressive actions and that they come at a price", Iranian Government spokesman Ali Rabiei said at a Monday news conference broadcast by Iranian television.
Aistrikes on 'Iranian' Targets in Syria

The comments by Rabiei followed Israel's confirmation on Sunday that it had conducted airstrikes on what it described as "Iranian Quds Force operatives and Shiite militia targets" in Syria to foil a professed attack by multple drones on the Jewish state.

"Iran has no immunity anywhere. Our forces operate in every sector against the Iranian aggression. I have directed that our forces be prepared for any scenario. We will continue to take determined and responsible action against Iran and its proxies for the security of Israel", said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A senior Iranian official has denied that Iranian forces had been hit in the air raid.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has, meanwhile, voiced support for "Israel's right to defend itself from the threat posed by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps".
Alleged Israeli Drones Crash in Beirut

In a separate development, two alleged Israeli drones crashed near the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Saturday, with one of them exploding in the air and reportedly damaging the Hezbollah media centre in the city's suburbs.

The drone episode caused Lebanon's Prime Minister, Saad Hariri to accuse Israel of being a "threat to regional stability" and violating a 2006 UN resolution that ended a war between Hezbollah and Tel Aviv. Israel has yet to comment on the incident.

The movement's secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, said, in turn, the drones that fell over Beirut were on a "suicide mission" and pledged to "do everything" to thwart such attacks in the future. He added that the time when Israel could bomb Lebanon was "over".
Israel's Purported Strikes in Iraq

It was reported last week that Israel had carried out several strikes in Iraq, including the 19 July attack north of Baghdad that targeted a base allegedly used by Iran's IRGC.

Prime Minister Netanyahu fuelled the speculation by hinting at Israel's role in the attacks on ammunition depots in Iraq belonging to the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) composed of mostly Shia Muslim groups.

"We’re acting not only if required, we’re acting in very many theatres against a state that seeks to annihilate us. Obviously I’ve given the security forces the order and the operational freedom to do what is necessary in order to disrupt these plots by Iran. And obviously I’ve also led, and in many ways continue to lead, a global effort against Iran", he told Channel 9 when asked whether Israel acts in Iraq "if required".

The prime minister vowed to not give Iran immunity "anywhere", describing the Islamic Republic as a country that is "trying to establish bases against us everywhere, [including] Iran itself, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen".

Israel, which views Iran and Hezbollah to be among its main rivals in the region, previously admitted to conducting hundreds of airstrikes against Syria in the past several years, claiming that they were aimed at countering a professed Iranian military presence in the country. While Damascus has strongly condemned the strikes as a violation of its sovereignty, Tehran has repeatedly stressed that its presence in Syria has been limited to sending advisers to help fight terrorism.

Iraqi Parliament Group Calls Alleged Israeli Strikes 'Declaration of War', Demands US Troops Exit
Although Israel has not officially confirmed it carried out airstrikes in Iraq, the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that could be the case, while anonymous US officials separately confirmed it in an interview with The New York Times.

The Fatah Coalition, an influential bloc in the Iraqi Parliament, has called recent airstrikes on the country, allegedly conducted by Israel, a “declaration of war” by the Jewish state and stated that it holds the US fully responsible for Tel Aviv's actions. In light of this, the coalition has called for the withdrawal of the about 5,000 remaining American soldiers from Iraq.

The parliamentary bloc also said in the statement that the country reserves the right to respond to Israel over the air raid purportedly conducted by it.

The statement comes the day after a drone airstrike on the Iraqi town of Qaim reportedly killed an Iraqi Shia militia commander. The attack was only the latest in a series of similar air raids, allegedly conducted by the Israeli Air Force (IAF).

Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has not explicitly confirmed the strikes, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vaguely hinted on 23 August that it was possibly an operation by the country's forces against alleged Iran proxies.

"We’re acting not only if required, we’re acting in very many theatres against a state that seeks to annihilate us. Obviously I’ve given the security forces the order and the operational freedom to do what is necessary in order to disrupt these plots by Iran", the prime minister said.

The last time the IDF officially claimed responsibility for conducting strikes in Iraq was 1981, when the IAF destroyed the Osirak nuclear power plant near Baghdad.

In a separate report by The New York Times, unnamed senior US officials were quoted as confirming that Israel was behind the recent airstrikes in Iraq as it targeted alleged Iranian weapons transfers to Syria – something that Tehran has repeatedly denied doing. The officials also said that Tel Aviv pushed "the limits" with its recent actions threatening the continued US military presence in Iraq.

Israel has repeatedly accused Iran of supplying weapons to militants seeking to attack the Jewish state and acknowledged carrying out several airstrikes against such deliveries and militant forces in Syria. Tehran has vehemently denied the Israeli claims and lambasted Tel Aviv for conducting air raids against sovereign nations.

Expert: Israel's Attacks in Kirkuk, Lebanon, Syria Aimed at Triggering Regional War
TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Iraqi strategic expert warned that Israel seeks to push the resistance forces in Iraq, Lebanon and Syria into a regional war through its current attacks.

The Arabic-language al-Ebaa news website quoted Wasiq al-Hashemi as saying on Sunday that Israeli proxies have launched attacks on Zein al-Abedin mosque in Kirkuk concurrent with Tel Aviv's aggression against Lebanon and Syria.

He noted that the similar timing these attacks indicates that Israeli proxies are present in Iraq as the Zionist regime aims to push the regional states into a war.

Al-Hashemi also warned that the region will soon witness unprecedented tensions.

Meantime, member of the Iraqi parliament's Security and Defense Committee Karim al-Aliwi told the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website that Israel is seeking to foment sedition and internal war in Iraq, warning of possible Israeli air attacks on Arba'een pilgrims in Iraq.

In relevant remarks on Saturday, a prominent Iraqi expert warned that Israel aimed to target the holy shrines in the Arab country to ignite a war between the US and Iran on Iraq's soil.

Imad Allo told the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website that third parties, including Israel and the Persian Gulf Arab states, are attempting to turn Iraq into a scene for confrontation between Washington and Tehran.

He warned that they will likely attempt to target the holy shrines in Iraq to trigger a war in the country and the region which cannot be controlled easily.

His comments came after Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki warned of a “strong response” if it was proven that the Israeli regime had been behind recent airstrikes in the country against the positions of pro-government Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).

Maliki, who is also secretary-general of the Islamic Dawa Party, said on Friday that if Israel continues to target Iraq, the country “will transform into a battle arena that drags in multiple countries, including Iran”.

He added that “the security of the region, which Iraq is a key part of, is a collective issue, and its protection requires the (full) responsibility of all countries”.

“The security of the region will be put in danger and the status quo will change if it is proven that Israel has targeted the sovereignty of Iraq. Iraq will give a strong response in case it is verified that Israel's hand is behind the recent attacks,” the former Iraqi prime minister stressed.

US could use imperial Chinese debt to ‘simply default’ on Beijing’s $1 trillion of US bond holdings
Washington is exploring new ways to target Beijing as it runs out of goods to tax in the ongoing trade war, and century-old Chinese bonds could become a weapon, analysts have told RT.

On Sunday, the latest tit-for-tat tariffs came into force. The US slapped a wide range of Chinese goods with 15 percent tariffs, while Beijing responded with levies ranging from 5 to 10 percent on American imports, including agricultural products. Despite the tariffs going into effect, the sides are still planning to hold trade talks later this month.

If the two sides still fail to hammer out their differences, the second batch of levies is scheduled to go into effect starting December 15, and separate US tariff hikes come into force in October.

But the trade war adversaries are already considering options beyond tariffs. Beijing, which enjoys a trade surplus with the US, has hinted it could use rare earth metals as a leverage. There is also China’s “nuclear” option of dumping US Treasuries.

Meanwhile, Washington has been reminded of China’s century-old bonds incurred before the nation adopted communism, which, adjusted for inflation, interest and other fees, amount to around $1 trillion, perfectly covering Beijing’s holdings of US Treasury Bills.

“The US will simply default on $1 trillion of UST bonds held by China and claim, based on these old bonds, that they are justified in doing so,” Max Keiser, the host of RT’s Keiser Report, said.

While it’s really doubtful that China would ever pay out, the US’ attempt to claim the money would only trigger serious economic problems and make the already turbulent situation worse, investment guru Jim Rogers told RT.

If America gets a ruling that they [China] must pay then what America would do is freeze Chinese assets in America… take those assets or seize those assets. And then you have a very serious trade war going on,” Rogers said, adding that China would certainly retaliate to such a move.

The individual holders of the antique bonds can do little to get any money from China, which has never recognized the debt. Firstly, they would have to have their claim recognized, win the case, and then find some way to force China to cash out, according to Duke University professor Mitu Gulati.

However, it would be a completely different story if the Trump administration steps in. While the US government used to support China, when holders of the imperial bonds sued it (Jackson v People’s Republic of China), and the case was dismissed, the current White House administration may not be so supportive, according to the analyst.

“Trump might not act in the same way if a case were brought today, especially if the bondholders were his ardent supporters,” Gulati noted. “Now, if the US federal government were trying to help the creditors sue, that would be a different story. But I don’t think that even the Trump administration is that crazy.”
