Idlib: Syrian Army Close to Khan Sheikhoun Gates
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army kept up the momentum of its offensive advances in the Northern province of Idlib on Wednesday, and and expanded its rule to the regions only 3 kilometers away from the strategic city of Khan Sheikhoun.

The Syrian Army troops, backed by artillery and missile fire, continued their clashes with Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Front or the Al-Nusra Front) terrorists on al-Hobait Road to the West of Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib and captured the towns of Um Zeitouneh, Kharbeh Morshed and al-Mantar.

Army officers said government troops have expanded their presence to areas only three kilometers to Khan Sheikhoun from the West, and said are advancing towards al-Salam Station at the gates of the strategic city.

They pointed to the strategic importance of Khan Sheikhoun, and reminded that the city that links Eastern Idlib to the Western and Northern parts of the province is seen as the gate to the capture of Idlib city.

"Once, Khan Sheikhoun is captured, the grounds will be paved for the Syrian army to reopen the crucial Aleppo-Damascus road and further advance towards other strategic regions, including al-Tah, Kafar Sajneh and Ma'aret al-Numan," they stated.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Syrian Army troops engaged in fierce clashes with terrorists from al-Hobait in Southern Idlib and took control of Tal A’as heights and the town of Kafar Ain to West of Khan Sheikhoun.

Meantime, the Arabic-language website of the Russian Sputnik news agency reported that the Syrian and Russian air forces conducted several airstrikes on the terrorists’ centers in Khan Sheikhoun as well as the terrorists' movements near Khan Sheikhoun.

A battlefield source also said that the Syrian Army troops are presently seven kilometers to the West of Khan Sheikhoun on al-Hobait road and six kilometers to the East of Khan Sheikhoun on al-Sakik road.

"Once the Syrian Army units shake hands along these two roads, they could win control over the regions in Northern Hama after eight years of war," he added.

In a relevant development on Tuesday, the Syrian Army continued its advances towards the city of Khan Sheikhoun, the main bastion of Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay’at terrorist group and took control of a region as government forces dispatched new military convoy to Southern Idlib.

The Syrian Army troops, backed by artillery and missile units, engaged in fierce clashes with Tahrir al-Sham terrorists in the town of Sakik in Southern Idlib and took control of the town of Tal Ra’i.

A military source, meantime, pointed to the Syrian Army advances towards the town of al-Tamaneh in Southern Idlib from Tal Ra’i, and said that the Syrian Army troops attacked defense lines of Tahrir al-Sham in al-Tamaneh.

The source noted that al-Tamaneh is the gate to Khan Sheikhoun, and said that other Syrian troops are also advancing towards West of Khan Sheikhoun from al-Hobait.

Meantime, the Syrian Army plans to lay siege on areas under the control of terrorists in Northern Hama from two directions after reaching Khan Sheikhoun.

The Syrian Army has dispatched a massive military convoy comprising tens of trucks carrying military equipment and elite forces to Sakik in Southern Idlib.

In a relevant development on Saturday, the Syrian Army regained control of a strategic region and the nearby hills in Southern Idlib.

The army forces, backed by artillery and missile fire, engaged in heavy clashes with Tahrir al-Sham terrorists in the town of al-Tamaneh in the Eastern parts of Khan Sheikhoun on Saturday, taking back control of the strategic town of Sakik and adjacent hills.

Meantime, a field source said that other Syrian army troops also clashed with militants in al-Latamineh and al-Habit in Western Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib, adding that the army intends to surround the terrorists in Southern Idlib and facilitate the operations in Idlib and Hama by launching concurrent operations in several fronts, driving wedges to separate the region into several parts and cutting the militants' supply lines.

He added that the Syrian army has also dispatched a large number of forces and military equipment to Atshan, Abuda Ali and Abu Omar in Eastern Hama and Southern Idlib.

The Syrian army kicked off an offensive to impose full control over the terrorists’ strategic base in the town of al-Hobait in Southern Idlib on Saturday.

The Syrian Army units conducted artillery and missile attacks on terrorists’ military positions in al-Hobait in Southern Idlib, inflicting heavy losses and casualties on the militants.

Meantime, the Syrian Army troops engaged in heavy clashes with the terrorists in Um al-Khalakhil and al-Zarzour region in the Southeastern outskirts of Idlib.

A battlefield source pointed to the Syrian Army’s efforts to liberate al-Hobait town in Southern Idlib, and said once the Syrian army completes control over this region which is the gate to Idlib, it will be able to take control of the city of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib and the international Damascus-Aleppo road.

He also referred to the Syrian Army plan to lay siege to the remaining areas controlled by terrorists in Northern Hama, and said that the Syrian army troops will manage to take full control of Sahl al-Ghab region in Northwestern Hama once they liberate the town of al-Hobait.

‘US Pressure on Turkey in Syria Could Have Grave Consequences for Washington’ – Ex-Military Staffer
Turkey’s Ministry of National Defence has confirmed the arrival of six American military personnel in the province of Sanliurfa in the southeast of the country, who will be involved in the work of the coordination centre for joint operations and the planned security zone in northern Syria.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar also said that the joint coordination centre for the US and Turkey is expected to start working in the coming days. At the same time, the Turkish minister stressed that Ankara would not tolerate delay in this matter and called on the United States to stop supporting the Kurdish “People’s Protection Units” (YPG) in Syria. According to Akar, if the United States does not comply, then Ankara has alternative plans for Syria.

Abdullah Ağar, a former military agent of the Special Forces Command of the Turkish Armed Forces, an expert in the field of security and counter-terrorism, a participant in military operations in Syria, has spoken about what alternative plans Turkey has.

“Turkey’s main concern is the threat of creating a terrorist quasi-state entity in the region, which could lead to the dismemberment of Syria and, in the medium and long-term, of Iraq and Turkey itself”, the expert noted.

“We see that America is exploiting this concern. Meanwhile, Ankara, as it were, warns Washington: if the agreements reached are not implemented, we have alternative options that involve a set of instruments of a geopolitical, strategic, tactical, and operational nature. Today, you are putting pressure on Turkey to achieve your goals, but subsequently this double play will result in grave consequences for you, as it will lead to a change in Turkish geopolitical preferences”, he said.

“The main US strategy in Syria is, on the one hand, to use the Kurdish forces of the YPG and PKK for their purposes, and, on the other, to develop cooperation with Turkey that is beneficial to Washington. Meanwhile, such a two-faced policy will have serious consequences. Currently, the problem for Turkey is not only being face to face with America in Syria; the issue now lies in the plane of geopolitical preferences and priorities. How long can such a two-track situation in relations with the USA continue? This question is now very often raised in Turkey. Today the 70-year-old alliance between Turkey and the United States is transforming and acquiring new dimensions, and it carries several contradictions. In the current period, we are witnessing the collapse of a multidimensional US policy, and the phenomena we are experiencing today are painful echoes of this process”, Ağar concluded.

Aleppo: Turkish Army Conducts Heavy Attacks on Kurdish Positions After Agreement with US
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Turkish Army and its allied militants carried out heavy attacks on the Kurdish militias’ military positions in Northern Aleppo after Ankara reached an agreement with the US to establish a safe zone in Northern Syria, the Kurdish-language media outlets said.

The Turkish Army and the terrorist groups backed by Ankara carried out over 127 mortar attacks on areas under the control of the Kurdish militias in several towns in Shirawa region and in the surrounding areas of Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo as the Turkish reconnaissance aircraft flew over the region, the Kurdish-language Hawar News website reported.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also pointed to the Turkish Army attacks on the Kurds in the town of al-Malekieh in Northern Aleppo, and said that the two sides sustained several casualties.

Meantime, Manbij Military Council affiliated to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) also announced that the Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army has pounded the council’s military positions in the town of Kourhovik in the Western part of Manbij city in Northeastern Aleppo.

Meantime, battlefield sources said that the Turkish Army has dispatched forces and military equipment to the border region in Sorouj near Ain al-Arab (Kobani) region in Syria’s Northern Aleppo and Shanli Urfeh province near the city of Tal Abyaz in Northern Raqqa.

Ankara and Washington agreed last Wednesday to create a safe zone in Northeastern Syria.

In a relevant development on Wednesday, the Arabic-language media outlets reported that the Turkish Army has prepared thousands of militants for an upcoming military operation against the Kurdish militia is Eastern Euphrates.

The pro-militant Arabic-language Qassiyoun news website quoted commander of the so-called National Army affiliated to the Turkish Army Yousef Hamoud as saying that a sum of 14,000 Ankara-backed terrorists are ready for imminent military operations in Eastern Syria.

Hamoud noted that the military offensive against the Kurdish militia will take place in line with political agreements reached between the US and Turkey.

The Arabic-language website of the Russian Sputnik news agency quoted a Turkish military source as saying that Ankara’s military operations against Kurds will probably be conducted in coming days.

Meantime, several militants were killed in a recent attack by the Turkish army and its affiliated militants on Kurdish militia positions in Northern Aleppo.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has recent announced the start of a new round of military operations against Kurds in Eastern Syria in the near future, which he described as an extension of the Euphrates Shield and Olive Branch operations.

TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Lebanese political expert said that the US has turned its back on the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after an agreement with Ankara to create a safe zone in Northern Syria, adding that Washington is using the Kurds as a tool to attain its goals.

Hassan Hardan told the Arabic-language al-Alam news channel that the US has struck an agreement with Turkey against the SDF after using them as an instrument in Syria.

He added that the SDF implemented the US policies in a move to establish an autonomous region in Northern Syria but now the possibility for the formation of such a canton has faded away, noting that now the Kurdish forces should decide if they want to continue their ties with the US despite its disloyalties.

Hardan said that the agreement between the US and Turkey was predictable since the very first day because the US never backtracks from supporting its strategic ally, adding that relations between Washington and the SDF were just directed towards meeting the US demands in the Syria crisis.

Turkish and US officials clinched a deal on Wednesday to establish a “joint operations center” aimed at creating a safe zone in Northern Syria to grapple with tensions between Ankara and a Washington-backed Kurdish militia.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his part, welcomed the agreement, saying that “it was important that a step be taken east of the Euphrates (River) and this is being taken together with the Americans”.

“With the creation of the operations center, the process will begin”, he pointed out, in an apparent reference to the creation of a safe zone in Northern Syria.

But Damascus lashed out at the US-Turkish deal.

“Syria categorically and blatantly rejects the agreement […] on the establishment of a so-called safe zone”, the state-run SANA news agency cited an unnamed Syrian foreign ministry source as saying on Thursday.

The source also argued that “Syria's Kurds who have accepted to become a tool in this aggressive US-Turkish project bear a historical responsibility in this regard”.

The Syrian foreign ministry also slammed the deal as “a gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria”, which violates the principles of international law and the UN charter.

According to Damascus, the deal represents "a dangerous escalation and a threat to peace and stability" in the area.

Damascus Slams US-Turkey Safe Zone Deal as 'Blatant Attack' on Syria's Sovereignty - State Media
Earlier, the Turkish Defence Ministry said in a statement that Ankara and Washington had agreed to create a centre to coordinate joint operations and the formation of a 'safe zone' in northern Syria.

Damascus has lashed out at a US-Turkish deal to establish a safe zone in northern Syria, which the Syrian government said rides roughshod over the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“Syria categorically and blatantly rejects the agreement […] on the establishment of a so-called safe zone,” state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited an unnamed Syrian Foreign Ministry source as saying on Thursday.

The source also argued that “Syria's Kurds, who have accepted to become a tool in this aggressive US-Turkish project, bear a historical responsibility in this regard.”

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also slammed the deal as “a gross violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria”, which violates the principles of international law and the UN charter. According to the Ministry, the deal represents "a dangerous escalation and a threat to peace and stability" in the area.

The statement comes after Turkish and US officials clinched a deal on Wednesday to establish a “joint operations centre” aimed at creating a safe zone in northern Syria to grapple with tensions between Turkey and a US-backed Kurdish militia.

“The talks that took place in the Turkish Defence Ministry on 5-7 August with US military representatives regarding the planned safe zone in the north of Syria in coordination with the United States have been completed. During the talks, the sides agreed to take measures as soon as possible to eliminate Turkey’s concerns about its national security,” the Turkish Defence Ministry said in a statement.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his part, welcomed the agreement, saying that “it was important that a step be taken east of the Euphrates [River] and this is being taken together with the Americans”.

“With the creation of the operations centre, the process will begin”, he pointed out, in an apparent reference to the creation of a safe zone in northern Syria.

Earlier, Erdogan said that he had notified Russia and the US about his plans to launch an operation in Syria in the east of the Euphrates River. He, however, did not reveal any other details about the upcoming operations, including the date of its start.

The territory in the east of the Euphrates is currently controlled by the self-defence forces, which mainly include Kurdish-led militants.

For years, Turkey has launched operations against the Kurds in the south-east of the country as well as in the northern parts of Iraq and Syria. The major crackdown on the Kurdish militias started in Turkey in 2015 and resulted in massive casualties, including the death of civilians.

In 2018, Turkey led Operation Olive Branch to take over the predominantly-Kurdish district of Afrin in northern Syria. In March this year, Ankara announced an operation against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), designated by Ankara as a terrorist organisation, in northern Iraq.

US to Withdraw Troops From Area of Turkish Operation in Syria - Ankara
Earlier, the Syrian Foreign Ministry "categorically and blatantly" rejected efforts by Washington and Ankara to create a "safe zone" in northern Syria, saying US and Turkish interference rides roughshods over the Syrian Arab Republic's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

US President Donald Trump has promised to withdraw US troops from areas of Kurdish-controlled northern Syria where a Turkish operation will be taking place, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has announced.

"In a telephone call with our president, the US president informed us that the US would be vacating the area. We will discuss the question of coordination after the withdrawal takes place. The agreement with the US on the creation of a safe zone is a very important first step," Cavusoglu said, speaking at a press briefing on Thursday.

The foreign minister added that Turkey would not allow the US to delay the implementation of a safe zone under any circumstances, and has shown Washington that it is prepared to back its words by deeds. "Either we do it together, or we will be able to do it ourselves," he said.

"Our decision is to create a safe zone so that there are no terrorists there from the Syrian Kurdish self-defence forces and the Kurdistan Workers Party. But we will not allow this agreement to be turned into the [US] Roadmap for Manbij," Cavusoglu noted, referring to the Turkish-US security agreement negotiated on last year.

Earlier, the Turkish Defence Ministry announced that Ankara and Washington had agreed to establish a coordination centre for joint operations, and to a security 'safe zone' in northern Syria in which an area of Syrian territory between 30 and 40 km wide would be controlled by Turkey in coordination with the United States, with Syrian Kurdish forces in the area forced to leave the area and surrender their heavy weapons.

Syrian authorities rejected the agreement, calling it a "dangerous" violation of Syria's sovereignty, and lamenting that "Syria's Kurds, who have accepted to become a tool in this aggressive US-Turkish project, bear a historical responsibility in this regard."

Damascus called on the international community to condemn this example of "flagrant aggression" by Turkey and the United States.

The US military established a presence in northern and northeastern Syria during the war with the Daesh (ISIS)* terrorist group, joining local, predominantly Kurdish militias in driving the terrorists out of these territories and helping them to establish self-governance autonomously from Damascus.

Turkey has launched several military operations against Kurdish militia units in Syria along the Turkish border, classifying them as 'terrorists' and accusing them of maintaining ties to the Kurdistan Workers Party, a Turkey-based Kurdish organisation which Ankara also considers as 'terrorists', and with whom Turkish security forces have clashed repeatedly in Turkey itself in recent years.

Earlier this year, a senior commander from the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance governing northern and eastern Syria said he felt a deal between Damascus and Syria's Kurds on autonomy for the country's north was "inevitable." However, in February, Bouthaina Shaaban, an advisor to Syrian President Bashar Assad, said the kind of autonomy the Kurds were asking for was impossible, since the country is a multiethnic and multireligious "melting pot," with all citizens "equal before Syrian law and the Syrian constitution."

US President Donald Trump began talking about the idea of withdrawing the estimated US 2,000 troops in Syria late last year, citing the defeat of Daesh and his lack of interest in remaining entangled in "endless" Middle Eastern wars, but has since waffled on the idea.
