Washington Plans to Create Coalition to 'Ensure Freedom of Navigation' off Iran, Yemen - US General

Iranian officials have earlier blasted the US over the Gulf buildup, calling the superpower's military presence in the Mideast the "weakest in history".

Washington has developed a plan to create an international military coalition that would safeguard strategic waters off Iran and Yemen chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine General Joseph Dunford said.

"We're engaging now with a number of countries to see if we can put together a coalition that would ensure freedom of navigation both in the Straits of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab," he was quoted by Reuters as saying.

"And so I think probably over the next couple of weeks we'll identify which nations have the political will to support that initiative and then we'll work directly with the militaries to identify the specific capabilities that'll support that," Dunford added.

Earlier, US Fifth Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Jim Malloy said the Navy would not rule out sending the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group through the Strait of Hormuz if doing so was found to be necessary. The strait is a strategic narrow body of water is separating the Persian Gulf from the Arabian Sea.

The sharp escalation of tensions between Iran and the United States began in May 2018, when US President Donald Trump announced Washington's unilateral withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Last month, on the one year anniversary of Trump's announcement, Iranian leaders said the country would suspend some of their voluntary commitments under the nuclear deal, citing the other signatories' apparent inability to withstand US pressure.

Tahrir Al-Sham's Ringleader Al-Jolani Vows Not to Withdraw From Demilitarized Zone
TEHRAN (FNA)- Ringleader of Tahrir al-Sham al-Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) Abu Mohammed al-Jolani declared that his militants will not retreat from the demilitarized zone two days after ceasefire was declared in Northern Syria.

The pro-militant Smart News website quoted al-Jolani as saying that Tahrir al-Sham has no plans to withdraw from its military positions in Northwestern Syria.

Meantime, al-Jolani reiterated Tahrir al-Sham’s lack of commitment to Astana meeting, and claimed that the terrorist group will take military actions to retake the regions that it has recently lost to the Syrian Army.

Meantime, the Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper pointed to the violation of the ceasefire in Northern Syria by terrorists, and said that several civilians have been wounded in terrorists’ rocket attacks on Share al-Nil region in the city of Aleppo.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) underlined that the terrorist groups pounded the Syrian Army’s military positions in Tal Hawash in Sahl al-Ghab in Northwestern Hama and al-Qasabieh in Southern Idlib.

In a relevant development on Thursday, the Syrian army hit a heavy blow at Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group's defense lines in the town of al-Latamineh in Northern Hama, forcing the militants to flee their most important headquarters in the region.

The Syrian army forces continued clashes with Tahrir al-Sham terrorists in the Eastern parts of the town of Tal Malah in Northern Hama on Thursday, retaking control of Wadi Hasmin region and the farms near the town of al-Zuka.

Meantime, a military source said that the Syrian army troops have regained control of Wadi Hasmin region, broken the first defense line of Tahrir al-Sham from al-Zuka and opened a new front towards the town of al-Latamineh as the militants' key base in Northern Hama.

He added that a large number of terrorists were forced to flee al-Latamineh as the army is advancing in the region.

The source also said that a group of 17 militants were killed in clashes in al-Zakah, adding that the army forces targeted the terrorists' supply lines in Hasraya and al-Arbaeen with artillery fire.

Meantime, the Syrian air force launched heavy attacks against the terrorists' positions in al-Latamineh, Kafr Zita, Latmin and Dawir al-Akrad in Northern Hama, destroying several of their bases and military vehicles and killing the militants inside.

Russia’s Envoy for Syria: White Helmets Should Face Trial
TEHRAN (FNA)- Members of the White Helmets non-governmental organization should face trial over their criminal activities, Russian Special Presidential Representative for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said.

"Those people are criminals. They provoke, generally speaking, world powers to stoke confrontation among themselves and to detonate tensions," Lavrentyev stated in an interview with TASS.

"Eventually, they should be brought accountable. I think that each of them will face trial sooner or later," he noted, adding, "I believe that the work should get started. They should be disclosed and evidence of their criminal activities should be collected. There is already lots of evidence."

Commenting on an item in the joint statement of the guarantor states (Russia, Turkey and Iran) ensuring security of the civilians in Idlib, Lavrentyev underscored that "the Russian side has always been guided [by the principle] that the civilian population must not suffer".

"I would like to stress once more that all the Russian airstrikes are checked several times through various sources. Only afterwards, provided that there are no preconditions civilians can suffer, they are conducted. They are conducted only against militants and ammo depots," he stated.

Zarif Says Gladdened to See B-Team Weakening
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif welcomed the UAE’s new decisions to change its regional policies, and said the exit of Abu Dhabi’s crown prince from the notorious B-team of war-mongers is a positive development.

“We welcome our neighboring countries' exit from the B-Team,” Zarif said today, during his press conference in Tehran on the occasion of the National Journalists Day, touching upon the U-Turn in Abu Dhabi’s regional policies.

B-Team is the way Zarif refers to a group of warmongers comprising of US National Security Adviser John Bolton, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The UAE seems to have started a U-turn in its regional polices after Iran's tough warnings to Abu Dhabi about the dire consequences of the UAE’s destructive polices in the region.

The UAE was seriously criticized by Iran and warned of consequences after a US spy drone took off from an Emirati airport and intruded into Iran’s airspace on June 20. The Iranian air defense units shot down the American spy drone and lodged a complaint with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Zarif had tweeted on Friday, “As Iran’s regional dialog and non-aggression pact advance, #B_Team shrinks.”

Former aide to Mohamed Bin Zayed Abdul-Khaleq Abdullah, in a tweet late on Saturday, said that the war against Yemen is over for Abu Dhabi.

Abdullah asserted that the UAE involvement in the Saudi-led war against Yemen is over and it will be soon announced officially.

“The UAE, from now on, will put all its political and diplomatic weight behind resolving the crisis and establishing peace for the people of Yemen,” the senior Emirati figure underlined in his post.

In response to Abdullah’s tweet, Ania El Afandi, an Algerian journalist, posted a tweet asking the Emirati figure why the UAE did not put its political weight, from the very outset, behind efforts for materializing peace.

Then the Arab journalist questioned the game-over rhetoric of Abdullah, asking, “War should come to an end officially, are your words addressing Saudi Arabia?”

“Thirdly, will the blockade against Qatar be lifted if issues with Iran are solved?” she concluded.

Also on Saturday, a senior member of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) of Yemen, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told Arabi21 news outlet that Senior Emirati officials have reassured Tehran that they will start a major shift in policy in Yemen's Southern provinces and launch intelligence cooperation with Ansarullah Movement.

The UAE has recently reached an agreement with Iran and within the framework of the agreement has promised Tehran that it will shift the state of political affairs in the Southern provinces of Yemen, the STC source added.

He added that the military and political heads of the STC, which is backed by Abu Dhabi, are among those who will be targeted by the new revisionist polices of the UAE in accordance with the agreement with Tehran.

According to the same source, now disagreements and rivalries have intensified among different fractions within the council, specially between the party of ‎Aidarus al-Zoubaidi, who chairs the council, and the party of Ahmed Hamed Lamlas, the secretary general of the STC.

"One of the articles of the comprehensive agreement reached between Tehran and Abu Dhabi entails the UAE's intelligence cooperation and coordination with Ansarullah Movement," the source claimed.

On Tuesday, a maritime security delegation from the UAE arrived in Tehran to resume bilateral coast guard meetings between Iran and the Arab country after a 6-year hiatus, in a bid to increase joint efforts on enhancing maritime security in the Persian Gulf region.

The seven-member delegation from the UAE coast guard was headed by UAE Coast Guard Commander Brigadier General Mohammed Ali Musleh Al-Ahbabi who later signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Commander of Iran's Border Police Brigadier General Qassem Rezayee.

UAE Angry with Yemen’s Ousted Government
TEHRAN (FNA)- New comments by a senior Emirati official show that the division between Abu Dhabi and Yemen’s ousted government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi is gaping.

Abdul-Khaleq Abdullah, a UAE academic and former aide of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Zayed, seriously censured Yemen’s ousted government of former president Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

While Yemen’s ousted government has been for years backed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Abdullah said in a tweet on Saturday that the former rulers of Yemen are now in contact with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, a group which is blacklisted by many Arab countries as a terrorist group.

He went on accusing the elements of former regime in Yemen as influenced by media propaganda of Qatar, adding that they are holding a secret grudge against the UAE.

They are after confronting the UAE and destructing all moves of Abu Dhabi in Yemen, Abdullah stressed.

His tweet came after Bloomberg reported on Thursday that Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed, prime minister of Yemen’s ousted regime, was disappointed with Abu Dhabi after his recent visit to the UAE.

WATCH Iran’s Revolutionary Guard seize tanker smuggling fuel in Persian Gulf
Footage released by Iranian media shows the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) capturing a foreign vessel which was “smuggling” fuel to “some Arab states.”

A short video published by the Iranian channel Press TV on social media shows the IRGC patrol boats approaching the ship, which reportedly had as many as 700,000 liters of fuel on board. An IRGC commander told the media that the vessel was captured near the island of Farsi in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday.

The small islet is located in the gulf between the territories of Iran and Saudi Arabia, north of Bahrain. The footage also shows several cargo tanks in the ship’s hull filled with a semi-transparent liquid, which appears to be the fuel in question.

It remains unclear who owns the tanker and where exactly it was heading. The Iranian IRNA news agency claimed that the seized vessel is an Iraqi ship, but Iraq’s oil ministry has dismissed this information.

Seven crew members were arrested by the Iranian authorities. It is the third foreign tanker captured by Iran in the gulf over the past weeks. One of the ships had links with the United Arab Emirates while another one was a British-flagged vessel.

Iran’s actions follow the detention of a Panama-flagged supertanker, carrying Iranian oil, by the British authorities in Gibraltar. The move sparked a bitter row between Tehran and London. The UK argued that the seized ship was heading to Syria in violation of EU sanctions. Iran dismissed those statements and slammed London for “piracy” and acting on behalf of Washington, which is also engaged in an ongoing feud with Tehran.

IRGC Seizes Foreign Vessel Smuggling Fuel from IranTEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy announced that it has impounded a foreign vessel near the Farsi Island in the Persian Gulf for smuggling 700,000 liters of fuel from Iran.

According to an IRGC public relations office announcement, following consultations with the legal and judicial officials, the force seized the vessel in a surprise attack near the Farsi Island.

The tanker was taken to Bushehr Port and its cargo was turned in to the National Oil Distribution Company (NODC) of Bushehr province.

The statement stressed that the IRGCN is always ready and will spare no efforts to defend the national interest of Iran.

Early in last month, the IRGCN seized a foreign ship smuggling fuel in the Persian Gulf, according to a statement by the public relations office of the IRGC Navy's first zone. The foreign vessel was smuggling a million liters of fuel from Iran and was seized in Iranian waters South of Lark island.

中国は暴徒を暴れさせ事実を積み重ねて米国と対峙

China Irate as US, UK Flags Feature in Hong Kong Unrest
TEHRAN (FNA)- Thousands of people, some carrying US and UK flags, occupied the streets in Hong Kong, a day after violently clashing with police, as the city has been rocked by months of agitation against a proposed bill to allow people to be extradited to stand trial in mainland China.

China's official news agency Xinhua wrote on Sunday that the "central government will not sit idly by and let this situation continue", adding, "We firmly believe that Hong Kong will be able to overcome the difficulties and challenges ahead."

While the the proposed bill has been suspended, protests have continued, opening a new front in an escalating face-off between the United States and China. Washington is adamant in supporting the unrest, much to the dismay of Beijing which is wary of outside meddling in the island's affairs.

On Sunday, thousands of demonstrators marched in the town of Tseung Kwan O in the New Territories, calling for a mass strike across Hong Kong on Monday. Black-clad protesters, some of them waving flags of the United States and the United Kingdom, occupied major shopping district for hours on Saturday. They used the area to attack a nearby police station with bricks and paint-filled bottles. This prompted police to fire tear gas and pepper spray to disperse the protesters. Clashes, however, dragged into early Sunday morning with police saying in a statement that they have arrested at least 20 people overnight.

A spokesperson of the Office of the Commissioner of China's Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) has recently deplored and firmly opposed the false remarks by a US congressman on Hong Kong police's handling of recent protests.

Eliot L. Engel, chairman of the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs, has stated that he was "deeply concerned by the reports of police brutality in response to peaceful protests in Hong Kong" and that "allegations of police violence over the past weeks have tarnished Hong Kong's international reputation for good governance and the fair administration of justice", Xinhua reported.

The spokesperson said in a statement that since the return of Hong Kong, China's central government has been committed to the principles of "one country, two systems", "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy in the HKSAR in strict accordance with the constitution and the Basic Law.

Hong Kong ranked the 16th for its rule of law performance in 2018, which was higher than that of the United States, while it ranked below 60th in 1996, the spokesperson added.

"These are undeniable facts. So what right do American politicians have to criticize human rights, freedoms and the rule of law of Hong Kong?" the spokesperson stated.

Hong Kong has been the scene of violent protests for weeks over an extradition bill that the government has essentially backed away from. Beijing has already warned against foreign interference as well as violence by the protesters. China recently announced it believes US officials were behind the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and asked Washington to “withdraw their black hands”.

UAE Ensures Iran of Revising Policies in Southern Yemen
TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Emirati officials have reassured Tehran that they will start a major shift in policy in Yemen's Southern provinces and launch intelligence cooperation with Ansarullah Movement, a senior member of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) of Yemen claimed on Saturday.

The UAE has recently reached an agreement with Iran and within the framework of the agreement has promised Tehran that it will shift the state of political affairs in the Southern provinces of Yemen, said a senior member of the STC, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, to Arabi21 news outlet.

He added that the military and political heads of the STC, which is backed by Abu Dhabi, are among those who will be targeted by the new revisionist polices of the UAE in accordance with the agreement with Tehran.

"One of the articles of the comprehensive agreement reached between Tehran and Abu Dhabi entails the UAE's intelligence cooperation and coordination with Ansarullah Movement," the source claimed.

UAE Troop Drawdown: Beginning of the End for Yemen War
TEHRAN (FNA)- The United Arab Emirates has been forced to withdraw its occupying troops from Yemen in coordination with key ally Saudi Arabia. This should mark the beginning of the end for the failed US-backed, Saudi-led war on Yemen.

The UAE, a leading member of the Western-backed Arab coalition battling the Ansarullah movement, is reducing its military presence after almost five years of failed war on the poorest country in the Arab world. The Persian Gulf state has pulled many troops from areas including the Southern port of Aden and the Western coast, but claims it remains committed to the ousted government of president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The drawdown was not a last-minute decision and had been discussed extensively with Riyadh. It came after the failed attempt to defeat the resistance movement of Ansarullah amid international condemnations for the ongoing human rights violations and war crimes in the war-torn country by the Saudi-led coalition.

Indeed, behind the drawdown is a disastrous failure of decision-making that led to the war on Yemen in 2015; the signature initiative of the Crown Prince MBS. Thanks to his leadership, Saudi cities and infrastructure are now targets for a once-ragged army that has developed increasingly sophisticated drones and missiles. The war is the worst humanitarian catastrophe in the world.

The Trump administration’s decision to sell billions in arms to Riyadh without congressional approval has only encouraged the crown prince to continue the quagmire too. The Saudis are not more capable of winning the war with more munitions. The American support has singularly helped in five years to support the Saudis in bombing civilian targets or increasing the carnage of the war. Children are the most at risk and are paying a horrible cost.

On the other hand, the war on Yemen has exposed the tenuous nature of Saudi Arabia’s relationships with its principal Muslim allies. The most important of them, Pakistan, surprisingly refused to send its army to assist the regime. The Sisi government in Egypt also refused to send large numbers of ground troops to participate in the fighting. Instead, Cairo sent a small contingent of several hundred soldiers and three to four ships to assist Riyadh.

And in recent instances, even those countries that agreed to participate in the Saudi-led campaign developed conflicts of interest with Riyadh over the course of the fighting; for example, the Saudis and the Emiratis are backing forces that are at odds over the future of Yemen and this has created friction that has at times erupted into violence between local actors.

In the prevailing environment, expect the Saudi coalition fighting in Yemen to be forced more into a stalemate following the UAE’s decision. Riyadh and Abu Dhabi had promised a swift campaign in what has now become one of the fiercest battles in the devastating conflict. Their initially stated goal was a total defeat of Ansarullah in Yemen, but after a couple of years they changed their claim, and said their goal is to cut off the Ansarullah’s main supply line and force them back to the North. However, little progress has been made since the campaign was launched, as the country is heavily defended by land and sea.

Last but not the least, the Saudi coalition’s inability to win or even to advance in Yemen has a two-pronged diagnosis: The fact that the Ansarullah are well-situated to repel foreign fighting forces; and the fact that the Saudi military suffers from its own systemic ineffectiveness and divisions – for instance, the UAE’s failed efforts to bring its power to bear in the fight war and its recent decision to withdraw.

Which is to say: The illegal war on Yemen has been a disaster for all involved parties, and so ending it is both the smart thing to do as well as the right thing to do under international law and UN Charter. And because American interference is most successful in regions that suffer from conflict or insecurity, ending the war has the added benefit of potentially weakening the War Party’s ability to meddle in regional affairs.
