thegrayzone2019/8/24
An Israeli bombing of a weapons depot allegedly used by Iran is the first Israeli strike on Iraq in nearly forty years and a major escalation of Israel’s campaign against Tehran. The attack also underscores how Israeli violence on its neighbors has been normalized, As’ad AbuKhalil argues.

Guest: As’ad AbuKhalil, professor of political science at California State University Stanislaus.

Israel has reportedly carried out military strikes in Iraq. US officials tell the New York Times that Israel bombed a weapons depot that was allegedly being used by Iran to move weapons to Syria.

This will be the first time Israel has bombed Iraq in nearly four decades, and a major escalation of Israel’s campaign against Iran.

Asad AbuKhalil is a professor of political science at California State University.

“Well it’s really not surprising. I mean I am old enough − I’m 59 years old − in my own lifetime Israel has bombed Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and it has also downed a Libyan civilian airliner,” AbuKhalil said.

“So the story of Israeli covert and overt destruction and terrorism in the Mideast region is a very old story. The only surprising thing about it is that how little coverage it gets here in the United States.”

“I mean this is the fourth or fifth time Israel has bombed targets inside Iraq, and the American media treats it with such disregard or yawn even,” AbuKhalil continued.

“And I think what is also shameful is that the Iraqi sectarian government, which is still beholden to the American occupation − I mean American occupiers in Iraq are still roaming the place, bombing and flying, without any knowledge of the Iraqi government.”

“Even today the Iraqi government admits that America flies in Iraq without notification to the Iraqi government.”

US Officials Confirm Israel Staged ‘Several Strikes in Recent Days’ on Iraq
TEHRAN (FNA)- Israel conducted “several strikes in recent days” in Iraq, unnamed senior American officials were quoted by The New York Times as saying, amid a series of unclaimed strikes in the past month targeting bases belonging to Iraqi pro-government troops.

The daily reported that two senior US officials speaking to the paper had stated that Israel had targeted Iraqi munition storehouses.

The newspaper's report cited an unnamed senior Middle Eastern intelligence official saying that Israel was specifically behind the July 19 attack, in which a drone was reported to have targeted a base for Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), also known as the Hashd al-Shaabi, near the town of Amerli in Northwestern Iraq.

Also earlier this week, another attack rocked a PMU position near a strategic air base North of the capital Baghdad. Following the raid, the popular forces vowed to target any unidentified aircraft near its bases.

Second-in-command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units, Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, held the United States fully responsible for recent attacks on the volunteer forces.

The NYT report came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted that the Tel Aviv regime was behind the latest attacks in Iraq, trying to use Israel's animosity towards Tehran as a pretext.

"We are operating – not just if needed, we are operating in many areas against a state that wants to annihilate us. Of course I gave the security forces a free hand and instructed them to do anything necessary to thwart Iran's plans," Netanyahu noted when asked whether Tel Aviv was considering operations in Iraq.

The Israeli regime has a record of attacking the forces fighting militant groups in Syria.

In January, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted during a visit to Iraq that the Tel Aviv regime could launch attacks against Hashd al-Shaabi forces.

The PMU was formed and joined forces with the Iraqi military in 2014 after the Daesh (also known as ISIL or ISIS) Takfiri terrorist group launched a campaign of bloodshed and destruction against the Arab nation.

Iraqi Sources: Israeli Military Aircraft Deployed in Ain Al-Assad Military Base
TEHRAN (FNA)- Israeli warplanes have been stationed in a military air base controlled by the US in Ain al-Assad region to enable them to raid the military positions of Hashd al-Sha’abi (Iraq’s popular forces) in Iraq, the Arabic-language media outlets reported.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen News TV network quoted Iraqi military commanders sources as saying that as per intel obtained from Hashd al-Sha’abi, the Israeli fighter jets are now in Iraq and they are in the US-controlled military base in Ain al-Assad.

It, meantime, quoted Iraqi sources as saying that Washington is trying to collect information on Baghdad’s official stance after the recent development in Iraq.

A member of Iraq’s Security and Defense Committee, Karim Alivi, said that evidence shows most of the attacks conducted on Iraqi positions, including Amerli and Saqaq garrisons, have been conducted by Israeli fighter jets.

Alivi, meantime, pointed to Israel’s efforts to weaken Hashd al-Sha’abi by conducting such attacks and also to assassinate Hashd al-Sha’abi commanders, and said that the Iraqi airspace is controlled by US Air Force and no drone or F35 aircraft can appear in Iraq’s airspace without prior notification to Washington.

In a relevant development on Thursday, second-in-command of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Units, Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes, held the United States fully responsible for recent attacks on the volunteer forces.

He said in a statement that the US, which has contributed to the emergence of terrorist groups in the Middle East, is now considering various ways to violate Iraq’s sovereignty and targeting the PMU.

“We have accurate and credible information that Americans brought in four Israeli drones this year via Azerbaijan to operate within the US fleet to carry out sorties aimed at Iraqi military headquarters. We also have other information, maps and recordings of all types of American aircraft, when they took off, when they landed and the number of hours they flew,” al-Mohandes pointed out.

“Instead of chasing Daesh terrorists, US military aircraft are collecting information and data concerning the brigades of Popular Mobilization Units, and their warehouses and arms depots,” the statement added.

Sayf al-Badr, the spokesman of the Iraqi Health Ministry, said in a statement that at least one person was killed and 29 others were wounded in a powerful explosion, which rocked a military base in Southern Baghdad on August 12.

An unnamed source from Iraq’s Interior Ministry stated that an ammunition warehouse exploded inside a federal police military base, named Falcon, in Owerij area near the Southern district of Doura.

The source added that the blast was followed by a series of explosions at the warehouse that sent a large amount of shrapnel to nearby houses.

Arabic-language al-Ahad TV television network reported in mid-July that a drone had dropped explosives onto a base belonging to Popular Mobilization Units near the town of Amerli, located about 170 kilometers North of the capital Baghdad, killing at least one PMU fighter and injuring four others.

Video footage broadcast by Iraqi channels showed a blaze burning at the site and plumes of thick smoke billowing. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Moreover, the Iraqi al-Etejah television network reported that an American B350 reconnaissance plane had flown over the area a few days earlier.

In January, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted during a visit to Iraq that the Israeli regime could launch attacks against Hashd al-Sha’abi forces, who played a key role in the Iraqi army’s counter-terrorism battles against the ISIL terrorist group and helped the government to rid the country of the Takfiri outfit in late 2017.

Pompeo was reported to have made it clear to Iraqi officials at a meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi that Washington would not react to possible Israeli attacks against Hashd al-Sha’abi fighters.

Abdul-Mahdi expressed concern about the statement and warned Pompeo that such actions by Israel would have grave consequences, Russia’s RT Arabic television news network reported back then.

Reacting to the reports, Moein al-Kazemi, a Hashd al-Shaabi commander, stated that the force was ready to deliver a “strong” response to any aggression, advising the regime in Tel Aviv not to “play with fire”.

The Israeli regime has a record of attacking the forces fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in Syria.

In June 2018, Hashd al-Shaabi fighters came under attack in Syria’s border town of al-Hari, in the Eastern province of Deir Ezzur, as they were chasing Daesh terrorists out of the area.

Both the Syrian government and Hashd al-Shaabi declared back then that the attack near the Iraqi-Syrian border had been deliberate and could only have been carried out by either Israel or the United States.

Israel preparing to bomb Houthis in Yemen to warn them away from Iran – reports
Israel is planning to bomb Houthi and Hezbollah targets in Yemen to keep them from receiving weapons from Iran following several Israeli attacks on Iraqi targets, Kuwaiti media has reported.

“Instead of chasing Daesh terrorists, US military aircraft are collecting information and data concerning the brigades of Popular Mobilization Units, and their warehouses and arms depots,” al-Mohandes said in a statement on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted during a visit to Iraq in January that the US would not react to Israeli attacks against PMU forces, which are on friendly terms with Iran.

Israeli forces are preparing to target resistance forces in southwestern Yemen, near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, according to Kuwaiti paper al-Jaridah, PressTV reported on Friday. Mossad and Israeli military intelligence are on the hunt for any attempts by Iran to deliver weapons, and the Houthis have transferred some of their drones and missiles to Iraq to confuse the Israelis.

Iraq closed its airspace last week to all “unauthorized” flights – including US aircraft – after an alleged Israeli airstrike on an arms depot belonging to the state-sponsored militia Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) near Baghdad killed a civilian and wounded nearly 40 others. Iraqi officials have said the strikes could not have happened without US approval, and PMU second-in-command Abu Mahdi al-Mohandes holds the US “fully responsible” for the Israeli attacks.

“Instead of chasing Daesh terrorists, US military aircraft are collecting information and data concerning the brigades of Popular Mobilization Units, and their warehouses and arms depots,” al-Mohandes said in a statement on Wednesday.

France Backs Ireland in Push to Block Free Trade Deal Between EU and Mercosur Over Amazon Fires
The Amazon – the largest rainforest on the planet – has been ravaged by wildfires burning at a record rate for several weeks. Brazil's President Bolsonaro, who has come under international criticism for his Amazon policies, blames the fires on climate campaigners.

The office of French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro of aving lied about climate at the G20 meeting in Osaka.

During talks with Bolsonaro at the Osaka summit, Macron voiced concerns over growing rate of deforestation in the Amazon and urged his Brazilian counterpart not to leave the 2015 Paris climate agreement.

In a statement on Friday, Macron's office also said that France is opposed to the Mercosur trade deal between the EU and South American countries, which is facing opposition from several members of the European bloc.

Earlier on Friday, Finland's Finance Ministry called on the European Union to consider banning Brazilian beef over the Amazon situation.

“Finance Minister Mika Lintila condemns the destruction of Amazon rainforests and suggests that the EU and Finland should urgently review the possibility of banning Brazilian beef imports,” the ministry said in a statement.

Ireland has earlier threatened to block the Mercosur deal if Brazil does not take steps toward protecting the burning Amazon rainforest.

“There is no way that Ireland will vote for the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement if Brazil does not honour its environmental commitments,” Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar said in a statement on Thursday.

Mercosur is the trade bloc of four Latin American economies – Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and Uruguay – which unites 250 million people and accounts for over 75 per cent of the cumulative GDP in South America.

The European Union, which is the biggest foreign investor in Mercosur, formulated a trade agreement with the bloc on 28 June following almost two decades of negotiations.

The deal is yet to be fully ratified by the EU legislatures and their Mercosur counterparts in a lenghty process that could take up to two years.
Opposition to Mercosur’s Beef Exports

Irish farmers have criticised the government for endorsing the deal over concerns that imports of South American beef would undermine the local beef sector, given the already-existing oversupply on the European market.

Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has echoed those concerns, saying in June that the deal would allow the Mercosur member states export 99,000 tonnes of beef to the EU, which he called a “very significant” downside to the trade agreement.
Fire, Forest, Burn

Brazil's space research agency reported this week, citing satellite data, that the country has seen 73,000 fires so far this year, the highest since records began in 2013, and more than half of them were in the Amazon. It represented a 84-per cent increase from the same period in 2018.

President Bolsonaro, who sacked the head of the agency last month amid differences over its deforestation data, accused local environmental groups of setting fires in a bid to embarrass the government.

“On the question of burning in the Amazon, which in my opinion may have been initiated by NGOs because they lost money, what is the intention? To bring problems to Brazil,” the president said at a steel industry meeting in Brasilia this week.

Climate campaigners have denied the accusations and blamed the fires on the government's policies favouring the expansion of mining and industrial farming in the vast rainforest.

Bolsonaro has also come under criticism from foreign nations, with German government suspending $39 million in aid for Amazon forest protection projects in response to his alleged lack of action to tackle growing deforestation in the area.

But Brazil's president stood by his policies, saying that the country doesn't need foreign aid. After Emmanuel Macron described the situation as an international crisis and proposed discussing it at the upcoming G7 summit, Bolsonaro accused the French counterpart of having “colonialist mentality”.

Amazon Fires: Brazil’s Bolsonaro Calls Out Emmanuel Macron for Misleading Public With ‘Fake’ Photo
The largest rainforest on the planet is being ravaged by thousands of fires and thousands of people, including politicians and celebrities, have been drawing attention to the problem using the hashtag #PrayForTheAmazon.

While raising awareness of a climate emergency is definitely a noble cause, some people have apparently resorted to misinformation in doing so, whether deliberately or not.

Some of the luminaries spreading the word about the burning Amazon rainforest have shared photos that were taken during previous fires, some of them not in Brazil at all.

For instance, a photo of the burning forest shared by French President Emmanuel Macron and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, was actually taken by a National Geographic photographer who died in 2003, reports AFP news agency which spotted it in the Alarmy photo library.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was quick to accuse Macron of “sensationalism” and attempting to score political points with a photo that is at least 16 years old.

“I regret that President Macron seeks to instrumentalise an internal issue of Brazil and other Amazonian countries for personal political gain,” he tweeted in Portuguese. “The sensational tone with which he refers to the Amazon (appealing even to fake photos) does nothing to solve the problem.”

Russia Warns US Against Deploying Missiles to Asia
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russia warned that a possible US deployment of ballistic missiles in the Asia-Pacific region will pose a threat to global security.

Speaking at a weekly televised briefing in capital Moscow on Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that “US actions are creating a threat for international security”, presstv reported.

She was referring to provocative comments by Pentagon Chief Mark Esper earlier this month that he was in favor of placing ground-launched, intermediate-range ballistic missiles in Asia relatively soon.

Zakharova’s remarks came three days after the Pentagon announced that it had tested a type of a ground-launched missile that was banned under the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, a bilateral agreement with Russia that the US scrapped earlier this month.

Following the test, the Pentagon announced that the missile was launched from a launcher on San Nicolas Island, a Navy test site off the coast of Los Angeles, and sped above the Pacific Ocean for over 500 kilometers before hitting its designated target.

The INF had banned all land-based missiles with ranges of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers and included missiles carrying both nuclear and conventional warheads.

On Tuesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov lambasted the US missile launch as “regrettable”, saying the move showed that the US had long been planning to abandon the landmark INF treaty with Russia.

Both Russia and China have already warned that the testing of the missile would trigger an arms race.

On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin also warned that Russia would take action to counter the threat from the newly-tested ground-based cruise missile, saying such missiles could soon be fired from launching sites in other countries, including Romania and Poland.

Thus, it poses a “danger” to Russia’s security, and Moscow would take “countermeasures”, including the development of its own ground-launched short- and mid-range missiles, he noted during a visit to Helsinki, Finland.

World on verge of ‘uncontrolled arms race’ because of US – Russia’s UN envoy
The US ambitions have put the world on the brink of a new arms race that can easily spiral out of control, warned the Russian envoy to the UN. Washington responded by blaming Moscow for the INF treaty’s collapse.

“Are you aware of the fact that all of us have found ourselves just one step away from an uncontrolled arms race, because of the US geopolitical ambitions?” Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s deputy ambassador to the UN, said at the emergency session of the Security Council that Moscow and Beijing convened on Thursday, in the wake of the US missile tests.

This a source of great concern for us, but apparently not for the US.

Washington apparently planned to leave Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty long before announcing its withdrawal from the 1987 agreement back in February, Polyanskiy added, since this is the only way it could have tested a new ground-launched cruise missile that violated the accord mere weeks after it officially expired.

The launcher used in the test was the same one installed in Aegis Ashore missile defense batteries in Romania and Poland. When the first of those systems was placed in 2016, Moscow expressed its concerns over their capability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles in violation of the INF treaty. The US assured Russia at the time the Aegis systems did not have such features.

“Now these suspicions are confirmed,” Polyanskiy said,

The Russian diplomat also rebuked US allies in Europe for their reluctance to support Moscow’s efforts in strengthening the treaty, back when it could have still been saved. In December 2018, Russia introduced a draft resolution to the UNSC that sought to enhance international support for the treaty, without any no criticism of the US. Yet, the western nations did not back it.

“Are you happy that you pressed the red button at that time?” the Russian diplomat said, addressing the European nations. Their inaction, he argued, has thrown back the security situation in Europe to the times before the INF, when short- and mid-range nuclear missiles were stationed on the continent.

Washington maintained its was Russia that “materially breached” the treaty by developing and allegedly deploying “multiple battalions” of missile systems the US allege are violating the INF. Moscow has repeatedly denied the accusations and even invited international inspections of the system in question – but no one took it up on the offer.

The acting US envoy to the UN, Jonathan Cohen, called the latest missile test a “prudent response” to the “aggressive strategies” pursued by Russia and China, which he blamed for the “deteriorating security environment” in the world.

After withdrawing from the INF treaty, Washington hinted it would like to re-negotiated the deal and include China into it. Beijing ‘s envoy to UN said it has “no interest in participating in trilateral disarmament talks” right now and insisted that the primary responsibility for the arms control rests with the powers possessing the largest nuclear arsenals.

SPUTNIK2019/8/22
Pentagon Chief on Missile Test: US Wanted to Make Sure It Can ‘Deter China's Bad Behaviour’
The remarks come just days after the Pentagon tested a conventional ground-launched cruise missile which covered a range of over 500 kilometres - a distance that would have been banned under the US-Russian Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, abandoned by Washington earlier this month.

In an interview with Fox News released on Wednesday, US Defence Secretary Mark Esper specifically touched upon the Pentagon’s recent cruise missile test launch, which he said could be seen, among other things, as a message to China.

“We wanted to make sure that we, as we need to, have the capability to also deter China's bad behaviour by having our own capability to be able to strike it in intermediate ranges,” Esper, who wrapped up his Asia tour earlier this month, said.

When asked if he chose Asia for his first trip because he considered China to be the greatest security threat to the US, Esper said that China was the number one priority for the Defense Department.

The Pentagon chief also described Beijing as Washington’s long-term strategic competitor, pledging that the US would not pull out of the region.

"I think in the long term, China is a greater challenge, given its economic might, its political weight and its ambitions," Ester pointed out.

The two countries have been locked in a trade conflict since June 2018, when Trump announced levies on $50 billion worth of Chinese imports, justifying the move by citing the need to balance the trade deficit. Since then, the two countries have introduced several rounds of reciprocal tariffs.

Separately, Esper said that he does not rule out that the US may create its hypersonic weapons within “a couple of years”.
Russian Foreign Minister Warns of New Arms Race

Esper’s remarks come after Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the US cruise missile test involving a Mark 41 launcher, which violated provisions of the Russian-US Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, poses a risk to the global security architecture and might result in a new arms race.

On Monday, the Pentagon said that it had tested a conventional ground-launched cruise missile which flew more than 500 kilometres (310 miles), a range banned under the INF Treaty.
Collapse of INF Treaty

The agreement collapsed on 2 August, when the US formally withdrew from the INF Treaty, citing alleged Russian violations of the document. Moscow has repeatedly insisted that its missiles complied with the accord.

In February, the US formally suspended its INF Treaty obligations, triggering a six-month withdrawal process. In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin followed suit by signing a decree suspending Moscow's participation in the accord.

Signed in 1987, the INF Treaty required that the two countries eliminate and permanently refrain from the development of ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometres (310 to 3,417 miles).

YouTube axes anti-protest channels as US Ministry of Truth battles China over Hong Kong
YouTube has disabled 210 channels for posting content related to the Hong Kong protests “in a coordinated manner,” following in the footsteps of Facebook and Twitter in restricting its arbitrary censorship to pro-China accounts.

“Channels in this network behaved in a coordinated manner while uploading videos related to the ongoing protests in Hong Kong,” Google threat analyst Shane Huntley claimed in a blog post on Thursday, adding that the Google team’s “discovery” was “consistent with recent observations and actions related to China announced by Facebook and Twitter.”

Translation? The channels were “sowing political discord” on behalf of the Chinese government, and had to be stopped. How did Google know it was the Chinese nefariously attempting to poison the minds against the protesters? The “use of VPNs” and “other methods of disguise” – widespread in the era of mass surveillance – was all the proof required to wipe the channels out of existence.

Twitter got the anti-China censorship ball rolling earlier this week, in perhaps the first-ever social media preemptive strike “proactively” deplatforming hundreds of thousands of accounts for the capital crime of “sowing discord.” Their crimes included “undermining the legitimacy and political positions of the protest movement on the ground.” One could argue that the protests themselves are a form of political discord, but resistance is futile when charged with such an inchoate offense.

None of the social media platforms have ever defined what exactly constitutes “attempting to sow discord,” though a common thread running through the mass deplatformings of the past year suggests it involves posting in support of a government the US doesn’t like – whether Russia, Iran, Venezuela, or China.

The social media Ministry of Truth has become increasingly open about the irrelevance of truth in what constitutes actionable disinformation. One group of “experts” in the spread of disinfo online even published a paper this week explaining that true statements could constitute disinformation if they were arranged to serve a purpose, calling for platforms to expand their definition of “inauthentic behavior” to include anyone reposting information portraying the “good guys” in a negative light.

The Chinese government challenged Twitter to explain its decision to ban state-owned media from advertising, asking “Why is it that China’s official media’s presentation is surely negative or wrong?”

Beijing has pointed to a US role in fanning the flames of unrest, a charge that grows more plausible with every day the protests continue despite having succeeded in forcing the Hong Kong government to withdraw a bill that would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to China. Armies of pro-protest tweeters swarm any post by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with pleas to intervene in their plight, even as US lawmakers threaten to rain down fire and fury should anyone harm a hair on a protester’s head. And photos of the protest leaders meeting with US diplomats suggest there is certainly some “coordinated inauthentic behavior” at play on the other side.

YouTube, as a subsidiary of Google, has been exposed as even more partisan than Twitter’s arbiters of truth. A whistleblower released nearly 1,000 pages of internal documentation earlier this month showing YouTube’s algorithms were aimed more at shaping reality than at accurately portraying it. The platform removed Iranian state media channels as Washington ramped up tensions with Tehran in the Strait of Hormuz, and its deactivation of pro-China channels now suggests the protests - despite achieving their initially stated goal – are far from over.

Can 2020 Summer Olympics help Fukushima rebound from nuclear disaster?
By David WhartonStaff Writer Aug. 12, 2019 5:32 PM

FUKUSHIMA, Japan −An hour north of Tokyo by way of bullet train, the land is lush and green, framed by thickly wooded mountains in the distance.

This vast rural prefecture in northeast Japan was once renowned for its fruit orchards, but much has changed.

“There has been a bad reputation here,” a local government official said.

Since the spring of 2011, the world has known Fukushima for the massive earthquake and tsunami that killed approximately 16,000 people along the coast. Flooding triggered a nuclear plant meltdown that forced hundreds of thousands more from their homes.

As the recovery process continues nearly a decade later, organizers of the 2020 Summer Games say they want to help.

Under the moniker of the “Reconstruction Olympics,” they have plotted a torch relay course that begins near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant and continues through adjacent prefectures − Miyagi and Iwate − impacted by the disaster. The region will host games in baseball, softball and soccer next summer.

“We are hoping that, through sports, we can give the residents new dreams,” said Takahiro Sato, director of Fukushima’s office of Olympic and Paralympic promotions. “We also want to show how far we’ve come.”

The effort has drawn mixed reactions, if only because the so-called “affected areas” are a sensitive topic in Japan.

Some people worry about exposure to lingering radiation; they accuse officials of whitewashing health risks. Critics question spending millions on sports while communities are still rebuilding.

“The people from that area have dealt with these issues for so long and so deeply, the Olympics are kind of a transient event,” said Kyle Cleveland, an associate professor of sociology at Temple University’s campus in Japan. “They’re going to see this as a public relations ploy.”

::

It was midafternoon in March 2011 when a 9.0 earthquake struck at sea, sending a procession of tsunamis racing toward land.

The initial crisis focused on the coastline, where thousands were swept to their deaths. Another concern soon arose as floodwaters shut down the power supply and reactor cooling systems at the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Three of the facility’s six reactors suffered fuel meltdowns, releasing radiation into the ocean and atmosphere.

Residents within a 12-mile “exclusion zone” were forced to evacuate; others in places such as Fukushima city, about 38 miles inland, fled as radioactive particles traveled by wind and rain.

The populace began to question announcements from the Tokyo Electric Power Co. (Tepco) about the scope of the contamination, said Cleveland, who is writing a book on the catastrophe and its aftermath.

“In the first 10 weeks, Tepco was downplaying the risk,” he said. “Eventually, they were dissembling and lying.”

The company has been ordered to pay millions in damages, and three former executives have been charged with professional negligence. Crews have removed massive amounts of contaminated soil, washed down buildings and roads, and begun a decades-long process to extract fuel from the reactors’ cooling pools.

All of which left the area known as the “Fruit Kingdom” in limbo.

It is assumed that low-level radiation increases the chances of adverse health effects such as cancer but the science can be complicated.

Reliable data on radiation risks is difficult to obtain, said Jonathan Links, a public health professor at Johns Hopkins University. And, with cosmic rays and other sources emitting natural or “background” ionizing radiation, it can be difficult to pinpoint whether an acceptable threshold for additional, low-level exposure exists at all.

In terms of athletes and coaches visiting the impacted prefectures for a week or two during the Olympics, Links said the cancer risk is proportional, growing incrementally each day.

The Japanese government has raised what it considers to be the acceptable exposure from 1 millisievert to 20 millisieverts per year. Along with this adjustment, officials have declared much of the region suitable for habitation, lifting evacuation orders in numerous municipalities. Housing subsidies that allowed evacuees to live elsewhere have been discontinued.

But some towns remain nearly empty.

“People are refusing to go back,” said Katsuya Hirano, a UCLA associate professor of history who has who has spent years collecting interviews for an oral history. “Especially families with children.”

Their hesitancy does not surprise Cleveland. Though research has led the Temple professor to believe conditions are safe, he knows that residents have lost faith in the authorities.

“That horse has left the barn,” he said. “It’s not coming back.”

A narrow highway leads west, out of downtown Fukushima, arriving finally at a 30,000-seat ballpark that rises from the farmlands.

Azuma Baseball Stadium was built in the late 1980s with a modernist design, blockish and concrete. Prefecture officials have begun renovations there.

“We changed from grass to artificial turf,” Sato said. “We’re updating the lockers and showers.”

The work is coordinated from a small office in the local government headquarters, where two-dozen employees tap away at computer keyboards and talk on phones, sitting at desks that have been pushed together.

Tokyo 2020’s initial bid included preliminary soccer competition at Miyagi Stadium, in a prefecture farther north of the nuclear plant. Six baseball and softball games were relocated to Azuma during later discussions with the International Olympic Committee.

“We made a presentation about the radiation situation and how to deal with it,” Sato recalled. “They understood and we think that’s why they got on board with this idea of the ‘Reconstruction Olympics.’ ”

Fukushima has spent $20 million on preparations over the past two years, he said, adding that his office has heard complaints from “a segment of the population.”

With infrastructure repairs continuing throughout the region, evacuee Akiko Morimatsu has a skeptical view of the Tokyo 2020 campaign.

“They have called these the ‘Reconstruction Games,’ but just because you call it that doesn’t mean the region will be recovered,” Morimatsu said.

Concerns about radiation prompted her to leave the Fukushima town of Koriyama, outside the mandatory evacuation zone, moving with her two young children to Osaka. Her husband, a doctor, remained; he visits the family once a month.

“The reality is that the region hasn’t recovered,” said Morimatsu, who is part of a group suing the national government and Tepco. “I feel the Olympics are being used as part of a campaign to spread the message that Fukushima is recovered and safe.”

Balance this sentiment against other forces at work in Japanese culture, where the Olympics and baseball, in particular, are widely popular. Masa Takaya, a spokesman for the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, insists that “sports can play an important role in our society.”

In Fukushima, a city of fewer than 300,000, colored banners fly beside the highway amid other signs of anticipation.

Elderly volunteers, plucking weeds from a flower bed at the train station, wear pink vests that express their support for the Games. On the eastern edge of town, a handful of workers attend to Azuma Stadium.

Dressed in white overalls, they walk slowly across the field, stopping every once in a while to bend down and pick at the pristine turf. Sato remains optimistic.

“Everyone’s circumstances are different,” he said. “Maybe there will be some people who come back to Fukushima because of this.”

As I said, Fukushima is not only about polluted water, but also directly connected to the Tokyo Olympics, where we talked about it a short time ago due to various environmental pollution. The Tokyo Olympics, which play in Fukushima and eat Fukushima agricultural products, are in danger of radiation. One of the basic rights of athletes is to be threatened. "If you stay in Fukushima for a week, the risk of cancer increases every day," the Los Angeles Times warned.

This is Onnuri.

An empty land where Fukushima is reluctant to return even to those who lived.

But the Japanese government beckons to come to Fukushima to the world.

[Shinzo Abe / Prime Minister of Japan (last month): I would like to tell the whole world how Tohoku is recovering from the great disaster.]

Still high radiation levels.

But Japan only says 'safe'.

A year before the Tokyo Olympics, the American press, the LA Times, visited Fukushima, a controversial land.

The newspaper said the Japanese government raised its radiation safety standards by 20 times.

Although only eight years after the nuclear accident, Fukushima is making people live.

"The Fukushima area considers the Tokyo Olympics a strategy to promote radioactive safety," he added.

He also quoted an interview with Professor Johns Hopkins Public Health, saying, "If a player or coach stays in Fukushima for a week or two, the chances of getting cancer will be higher every day."

[Kim, Ik Joong / Former Professor, Dongguk University Medical School: The longer the radiation dose, the greater the probability of cancer. You can understand it like this.]

The Olympic Games are held 70km away from the nuclear accident site and 100km away from the soccer field.

On dirt and grass with contaminated soil, players who run hard and breathe harder are more likely to be exposed to radiation.

[Kim Ik Joong / Former Professor, Dongguk University Medical School: You get a lot of breathing when you exercise. Internal exposure through breathing increases a lot.]

In addition, as Fukushima's food goes to the table in the Athlete's Village, according to the Japanese government's plan, the right to health of the athletes will be even more threatened.

Google Map

Google Maps Platform

Exclusive Video Shows Scale of Khan Sheikhoun's Destruction After Syrian Town Cleared of Terrorists
Earlier this day, the Syrian army regained control over the city of Khan Sheikhoun, located in Idlib province in the northwest of the country, and is currently conducting mine clearance and security sweep operations there.

Exclusive footage obtained by a Sputnik correspondent shows the situation in Khan Sheikhoun in Syria's Idlib province after the Syrian army regained control over the town, occupying key positions around it and cutting off the supply lines of militants from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group, formerly known as the Nusra Front* and banned in Russia.

The video shows the extent of destruction of the area, with the majority of buildings destroyed by bombs and rubble scattered in the streets.

Fighting in Idlib intensified over the last few days. On Monday, a Turkish military convoy entered the Syrian city of Saraqib, located in Idlib, and headed to Khan Sheikhoun, which was until recently under the militants’ control. In response to that, the Syrian Air Force hit the convoy. It was later reported that the Syrian army had occupied key positions around the town.

In early August, a long-discussed truce entered into force in Idlib. The Syrian military said it would resume its military operation in northwestern Syria if Ankara failed to implement its obligations under a Turkey-Russia agreement reached in Sochi last September. Three days later, on August 5, the Syrian government forces resumed the operation due to the militants' non-compliance with the ceasefire agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey.

Turkey Was Notified Attacks by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham in Syria's Idlib Would be Crushed - Lavrov

The Turkish Defence Ministry said a day earlier that three civilians had been killed and 12 more had been injured in an attack on its convoy moving toward an observatory point in Idlib Province.

Attacks by Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham militants in Idlib will be crushed, Turkey has been notified about that, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

“Jointly with our Turkish colleagues, in order to stop regular violations by these terrorists of the cessation of hostilities regime, although it does not extend to them, we have made it clear that if they carry out attacks from this zone, they will be severely suppressed. Throughout this year, these provocations have not stopped", Lavrov said at a press conference, held after his talks with Ghanaian counterpart, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS or the "Organisation for the Liberation of the Levant”) is an alliance of militant groups active in Syria. The group, formerly known as Jabhat al-Nusra* is a part of this broader alliance.

He added that in all cases, Turkish colleagues were warned that "we would respond, and this practice can't stop, because the agreement on Idlib does not provide for the extension of the ceasefire regime to terrorists".

"The developing situation has emerged due to the fact that extremists do not cease their attempts to hit from there [Idlib's areas controlled by militants and the opposition] targets located in other territories of the Syrian Arab Republic. Our military certainly maintains constant contact. These days, they are discussing the current situation", Lavrov stated.

The minister stressed that Russia was closely following the situation in Idlib.

Syrian pro-government newspaper al Watan earlier reported that the Syrian Army had established control over the entire city of Khan Sheikhoun. The army is now fully in control of the city and the Damascus-Aleppo highway.

The Syrian government forces renewed their activities in the northwest of the country due to the militants’ non-compliance with the agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey.

Attack on Military Convoy in Syria's Idlib

The statement comes after Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said earlier in the day that Turkey was in contact with Russia over the Syrian Air Force's recent attack on a Turkish military convoy in the northwestern Syrian province of Idlib.

"We must ensure a ceasefire in Idlib. Our convoy has suffered an attack recently. We contacted Russia immediately. Contacts continue. If the need arises, I will talk with [Russian Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov. Our convoy's mission is to assist the operation of the observatory point, operating under the Astana agreements", Cavusoglu told reporters.

The minister stressed that it was necessary to focus on a political settlement and transition period in Syria.

"We will discuss this at upcoming meetings with the Russian and Iranian leaders ... It is difficult to ensure a political settlement without the participation of the guarantor states", Cavusoglu added.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said a day earlier that Turkish armoured vehicles had crossed Syria's border and were moving toward Khan Sheikhoun, a rebel stronghold in Idlib. The Turkish Defence Ministry accused the Syrian Air Force later on 19 August of conducting an airstrike against the Turkish military convoy, adding that three civilians had been killed and 12 more had sustained injuries as a result of this attack.

Syrian Army Arrives in Khan Sheikhoun After 5 Years
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army continued its military operations in Southern Idlib and after inflicting heavy losses and casualties on the terrorist groups managed to enter Khan Sheikhoun after five years.

The Damascus Army troops kept on their clashes with the terrorists in Northwestern Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib, and took control of al-Faqir military post and deployed only 900 meters from Aleppo-Damascus Highway around Khan Sheikhoun.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted battlefield sources as saying that the Syrian Army troops entered Khan Sheikhoun city from the North-West after making further advances.

It pointed to the destruction of several bomb-laden vehicles in the region, and said that tens of terrorists started fleeing the scene of the battle as the Syrian Army made its advances.

Meantime, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) pointed to the arrival of the Syrian Army in Khan Sheikhoun city after five years since the occupation of the city by terrorists, and said that at least 45 terrorists were killed in the Syrian Army’s military operation in Khan Sheikhoun.

The Syrian Army’s Advances comes as terrorist groups are accusing each other of losing the regions in Idlib.

In a relevant development on Sunday, the Syrian Army continued its military operations around Khan Sheikhoun, and cut off the most important and main route used by the terrorists from Ma'aret al-Numan to Khan Sheikhoun.

The Syrian Army troops, meantime, continued their clashes with Tahrir al-Sham to the Northwest of Kham Sheikhoun, took control of the town of Tal Kafar Eidoun just three kilometers to the West of the International Aleppo-Damascus Highway.

The Syrian Army troops, meantime, continued their advances from Tal al-Nar to the East of Tal Alas and captured Mohammad Qassem al-Najm Farms and Sifu to the East of Kafar Nab.

A military source, meantime, pointed to the Syrian Army troops' efforts to lay full siege to Khan Sheikhoun, and said that by imposing control over the Aleppo-Damascus Highway, the Syrian Army has managed to cut off the main road linking Khan Sheikhoun to Ma'aret al-Numan that hosts the largest bastion of the terrorists in Idlib province.

The English-language al-Masdar reported that the Syrian Army is now just one kilometers away from Khan Sheikhoun.

In a relevant development earlier on Sunday, the Syrian Army continued its military operations in Southern Idlib, and further tightened its grip over the terrorists after capturing strategic areas around Khan Sheikhoun.

The Syrian Army units backed by artillery units engaged in fierce clashes with Tahrir al-Sham in Northwestern Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib and managed to take control of Khan Sheikhoun Farms and the strategic hilltop Elnar near Khan Sheikhoun City.

The Arabic-language website of the Russian Sputnik news agency, meantime reported that the Syrian Air Forces in consecutive attacks hit the terrorists’ military positions in Khan Sheikhoun, Rakaya, Kafar Sajneh and Sheikh Mustafa in Southern Idlib, destroying a number of their centers and military vehicles as well as movements.

A military source, meantime, pointed to the killing of tens of terrorists in the Syrian Army’s military operations, and said that the government forces have taken full control of Khan Sheikhoun’s Western to Northern farms.

It, meantime, reiterated that the Syrian Army captured the strategic al-Nar hilltop and paralyzed terrorists in military terms in the city of al-Rakaya and took full control of the Western part of Kafar Sajneh city.

The terrorist groups are losing their militants in Syrian Army's continued advances near Khan Sheikhoun and sustaining heavy defeats.

Idlib: Ma’aret Al-Numan Residents Preparing for Syrian Army’s Imminent Arrival
TEHRAN (FNA)- The local population in Ma’aret al-Numan in Southern Idlib are preparing themselves for the imminent entry of the Syrian Army troops into the city, a Syrian parliamentarian said, adding that the people are eagerly waiting for the army’s military takeover.

“The next target of the Syrian Arm’s military operations is Ma’aret al-Numan after imposing full control over Khan Sheikhoun,” Syrian lawmaker for Idlib Province Safvan Qorbi said.

He noted that the residents of Idlib and its countryside are expecting the Syrian Army to arrive in areas occupied by the terrorists, and said that large groups of residents of Ma’aret al-Numan and the city of Saraqib in Southern Idlib have visited the joint Syrian-Russian Command Headquarters for the implementation of peace plan.

Qorbi noted the massive presence of the terrorist groups in Ma’aret al-Numan and the Turkish Army’s occupying role in the region, and said that the Syrian Army is prepared to enter Ma’aret al-Numan.

He also pointed to the heavy defeat of the terrorist groups in Khan Sheikhoun city despite massive military backup by the Turkish Army and their retreat from the region, and said that negotiations are currently underway for exit of the Turkish Army troops from areas under its control in Hama.

On Monday, the Syrian Army managed to enter Khan Sheikhoun after five years.

The Damascus Army troops kept on their clashes with the terrorists in Northwestern Khan Sheikhoun in Southern Idlib, and took control of al-Faqir military post and deployed only 900 meters from Aleppo-Damascus Highway around Khan Sheikhoun.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking about the situation in Khan Sheikhoun, said that the Syrian government troops, supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces, did not violate any agreements with Turkey.

"As for what is happening in the Idlib de-escalation zone and, in particular, in the Khan Sheikhoun area and the surrounding area: the Syrian armed forces with our support do not violate any agreements. Let me remind you once again, [Russian] President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said this," Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, Sputnik reported.

Lavrov added that it had been impossible yet to organise joint military patrols by Russia and Turkey in Idlib.

He stated that the Syrian government troops had acted legitimately by eliminating the terror hotbed in Khan Sheikhoun.

The statement comes after the Syrian military regained control over Khan Sheikhoun, as a part of last week’s operation in nearby Hama province.

Before that, a Turkish military convoy entered the Syrian city of Saraqib, located in Idlib, and headed to Khan Sheikhoun, which used to be under the militants’ control. In response to that, the Syrian Air Force hit the convoy. After that, the Syrian Army seized key positions around Khan Sheikhoun, cutting terrorist group's supply lines.

In early August, the long-discussed truce entered into force in Idlib. The Syrian military leadership announced it would resume its military operation in Northwestern Syria if Ankara failed to implement its obligations under a Turkey-Russia agreement reached in Sochi last September. Three days later, the Syrian government forces resumed the operation due to the militants' non-compliance with the ceasefire agreement brokered by Moscow and Ankara.

‘Imminent Threat’: Tokyo Report Highlights North Korea’s Miniaturized Nuclear Weapons
Tokyo’s 2019 defense white paper calls attention to North Korea successfully miniaturizing a nuclear warhead. While the inclusion reflects increasing Japanese anxieties, it’s likely an attempt to pressure the US into resuming talks with Pyongyang, since Tokyo’s own bilateral summit attempts have so far failed.

Unnamed sources told the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper Wednesday that in unreleased white paper on defense, the Japanese government has concluded that the ability of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) to miniaturize a nuclear warhead poses a “serious and imminent threat” to the country.

However, it’s not the first time the claim has been made. As early as March 2016, Pyongyang published photos of State Affairs Commission chair Kim Jong Un standing next to a metallic sphere roughly the size of a large beach ball, which Rodong Sinmun claimed was a miniaturized nuclear warhead.

While the Pentagon dismissed their claims at the time, the following year, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) concluded the DPRK had done just that.

“The IC [intelligence community] assesses North Korea has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, to include delivery by ICBM-class missiles,” said a part of the classified assessment that was read to the Washington Post in August 2017. The report also found that the socialist country possessed as many as 60 nuclear warheads, although it didn’t say how many the DIA thought were miniaturized.

It’s unknown if the report links the smaller warheads to the short-range ballistic missiles tested by the DPRK in recent months.

So if everybody already knew about North Korea’s missile-capable nukes, why the hubbub?

“It is Japan that is most threatened, and probably the primary target of such a capability,” Vipin Narang, a nuclear affairs expert at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Reuters Wednesday. “So openly acknowledging it underscores Tokyo’s acute fears that North Korea’s nuclear program continues to grow unabated with no foreseeable plan to slow its growth, let alone eliminate them.”

Denuclearization talks began in June 2018 between the United States and the DPRK, with Kim and US President Donald Trump leaving the Singapore summit with promises to move toward ending the military standoff on the peninsula that’s lasted since a tentative ceasefire was signed in 1953. A second round of talks in Hanoi this past February fell apart, however, as each side proved unwilling to budge until the other side gave more concessions.

However, Japan hasn’t been a part of these talks, and in light of the failure of Washington to deliver, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has begun shifting his stance toward Pyongyang in the interests of addressing the DPRK himself.

Just weeks after the Hanoi summit, Japan stepped back from a European Union motion presented to the UN Human Rights Council in March that condemned North Korea’s human rights record - the first time in a decade it didn’t back such a statement. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told Kyodo that Tokyo had “reached this decision based on a comprehensive examination of the outcome” of the Hanoi summit.

Then in May, the island nation dropped several provocative statements aimed at the DPRK from its annual Diplomatic Bluebook, from claiming ownership of several contended islands in the Sea of Japan to a pledge by Tokyo to work with its allies “to maximize pressure on North Korea by all available means.”

Abe then told reporters on May 6 that he was willing to “meet face-to-face with Chairman Kim Jong Un, and meet with him without attaching any conditions,” indicating his primary concern, alongside peace, was the repatriation of the remaining Japanese citizens abducted in North Korea in the late 1970s and early 1980s. As many as 17 people are alleged to have been abducted between 1977 and 1983, although it’s unclear why or by whom.

In 2002, then-leader Kim Jong Il told then-Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi that only 13 had been abducted and eight of them had died by then, permitting the remaining five to return to Japan and washing his hands of the issue. However, Tokyo has rejected proof of the eight deaths, and the issue of winning the return of any remaining abductees has formed the center of Japanese relations with the DPRK.

However, it’s been an uphill struggle for Japan and the DPRK to come to terms. The entire Korean Peninsula was a Japanese client state or outright colony between 1876 and 1945, and the years of brutal imperial rule have left a stain on relations between Japan and both Korean states.

Tokyo “must not dream of dealing with” North Korea without making “full reparation for its past crimes,” Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Korean Workers Party, wrote in March 2019. Pyongyang also prodded Tokyo during the Hanoi talks for using US diplomats as interlocutors for their own concerns with regards to DPRK relations - a possible reason Abe hopes to speak directly with them now.

Abe reaffirmed his commitment to meeting with Kim late last month, following a set of missile tests by the North.

However, Abe is hardly a man of peace. During his administration, he’s taken unprecedented steps to expand the country’s defense spending, including a controversial retrofitting of the Self Defense Force’s Izumo-class multipurpose destroyers to carry F-35B stealth aircraft, and attempting to remove the country’s pacifist clause from its constitution.

Now, US Special Envoy to North Korea Stephen Biegun has returned to Seoul to meet with South Korean - and hopefully North Korean - officials, “as soon as we hear from our counterparts.” However, with Pyongyang still furious over South Korea’s participation in war games it had previously promised to shun, it’s unclear if Washington’s latest attempt to kickstart negotiations will be successful.

US-Backed SDF Abduct Civilians in Raqqa for Body Organ Trade
TEHRAN (FNA)- The citizens of Raqqa are being kidnapped by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to be used in body organ trade, the Arabic-language media outlets said.

The Arabic-language Neda News Website affiliated to the militants reported that the Kurdish militias have kidnapped civilians in Raqqa City and steal their body party after transferring them to their clandestine hospitals in several regions in Raqqa and the City of al-Tabaqa, where Turkish physicians conduct surgeries.

It quoted several Raqqa citizens as saying that civilians have found a mass grave in al-Ramileh region near a media center which contains dead bodies of a number of civilians, including children, whose body organs have been stolen.

The report said corpses of civilians have also been found in the town of al-Amerieh in Western Raqqa and al-Akirshi South-East of the town, adding that early examinations have shown that body organs of these corpses have also been taken away.

It said that Raqqa citizens have recently confronted some groups affiliated to the Kurdish militias while they were trying to abduct a number of children.

The SDF are cooperating with Israeli physicians in setting up hospitals for body organ trade in Eastern Syria, the Arabic-language media outlets reported in July.

In a relevant development in mid-July, the Arabic-language al-A’alam TV channel quoted informed sources in Hasaka as saying that the SDF had set up clandestine field hospitals for stealing and trading body organs of people in the cities of Hasaka and Qamsehli in Northeastern Hasaka province,

The sources said that the SDF had engaged in body organ trade by either abducting children or by taking out the organs of their slain militants who had been forced into the rank of the terrorist group.

In a relevant development in October 2018, terrorists in Northwestern Syria had intensified trafficking of the body organs of Idlib citizens to Turkey to earn more money in the country's black market.

Syria's Arabic-language al-Mahaver news website reported that body organ trading by terrorists has intensified in Idlib city and other militant-held regions in the Northwestern province.

It further said that the terrorists kidnap several civilians in the militant-held regions in Idlib each day to excise their organs in dreadful operations and send them to Turkey by certain groups that are running operations in both countries.

The civilians go under illegal surgery and their body organs are taken out and sold at high prices, the news website said, adding that people in the Northeastern city of Idlib have "called on the Syrian Army to enter their region and save them from the terrorist groups' brutalities".

Director-General of the Syria Coroner's Office Hossein Noufel disclosed in November 2016 that the body organs of thousands of Syrian civilians were sold in the international black markets over the past six years.

"We have accurate information that over 25,000 surgical operations have been conducted in the refugee camps of the neighboring countries and in the terrorist-controlled areas in Syria since 2011 to take out the body organs of 15,000 Syrians and sell them in the international black markets," Dr. Noufel said.

He pointed to the high prices of human body organs in the black markets, and said, "A kidney is sold $10,000 in Turkey while the same kidney is sold for $1,000 in Iraq, but in Lebanon and Syria the price of each kidney is $3,000.”

Dr. Noufel said that other human body organs such as spleen and cornea are also sold in the black markets.

According to latest reports, the children who have been rescued from the camps of Abdullah Muhammad al-Muhaysini, a senior al Qaeda-linked cleric and the religious leader of Jeish al-Fatah terrorist group, are now threatened with the danger of trafficking their body organs by the terrorists.

Pentagon Confirms US Military Drone Shot Down in Yemen - Spokesperson
Earlier today, Yemeni Houthis reported that their air defence had downed a US multipurpose MQ-9 drone over the province of Dhamar in the central part of the country.

Washington has confirmed that Houthi rebels shot down a US drone in Yemen, according to a Department of Defence spokesperson.

"Yes, that's accurate", the spokesperson said when asked to confirm earlier media reports that a US MQ-9 military drone had been shot down over Yemen's Dhamar governorate.

This comes as the movement's spokesperson told the Al Masirah broadcaster that the rocket which downed the drone was modernised on the spot and would soon be presented at a press conference.

He warned the Saudi-led Arab coalition to think 'a thousand times before invading Yemen's airspace'.

Yemen, located on the southern tip of the Arabian peninsula, has been mired in strife as the government forces, led by President Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi, and the rebel Houthi movement, have been locked in an armed conflict for several years.

The Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis at Hadi's request since March 2015, with the rebels retaliating against the attacks. US drones are often used in Yemen to destroy suspected terrorists.

Blasts in Southern Thailand Injure 7 After Talks Between Insurgents, Gov't Fail - Reports
BANGKOK, (Sputnik) – Earlier in the week, the government refused to release Islamists allegedly involved in the continuous separatist insurgency in the south. Representatives of the largest separatist group in the region, Barisan Revolusi Nasional, had named the prisoner release as the main precondition for resuming peace talks with Bangkok.

Seven people, including three children, were injured in a series of explosions that took place in Thailand's predominantly-Muslim southern province of Yala on Wednesday, one day after the government refused to consider releasing detained Islamic separatists, local media reported.

Three improvised explosive devices hit power transmission towers, while two more blasts targeted a cell phone tower and an ATM, Channel 3 reported.

The attacks also caused power outages in two districts.

The Thai authorities have refuted any connection between the attacks and their decision to not consider the release.

“These explosions have nothing to do with the demands of separatists”, the Thai deputy prime minister told Channel 3.

The roots of the conflict in southern Thailand date back to the early 20th century, when the territory of the Pattani sultanate became part of the mostly Buddhist Siam (former name of Thailand) and was separated into three provinces − Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala. Since then, Muslim movements in these regions have repeatedly called for either broader autonomy or independence.

Woman Seen With Prince Andrew in Epstein Video May Be Ex-Aussie Prime Minister's Daughter - Report

A 2010 video emerged last week featuring a man, who is believed to be UK Prince Andrew, bidding farewell to a mystery brunette leaving the New York mansion of US billionaire and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself in jail on 10 August 2019.

A woman seen with the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, in a video purportedly shot at the New York house of the now-deceased US financier Jeffrey Epstein in December 2010 is alleged to be Katherine Keating, daughter of former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The paper cited her friends as saying that the woman in the footage, which was first released by the Daily Mail last week and showed Prince Andrew waving her goodbye, strikingly resembled Keating, with the similarities going "right down to the beauty spot on her left cheek".

Keating has yet to comment on the speculation.

The video separately showed Epstein, who was just released from prison after serving a 13-month term for soliciting a minor for prostitution, leaving his mansion with a young blonde, who accompanied him to his car.

There's no suggestion that Keating, who had just moved to New York at the time to be closer to her then-boyfriend, prominent hotelier Andre Balazs, was aware of or involved in any of Epstein's supposed criminal activities. Balazs' name, meanwhile, is said to have appeared in the disgraced financier's "black book" that surfaced in court proceedings.

Incidentally, a few years ago, Keating who now works as Maverick's chief sustainability and strategy officer, presented a series of "One on One" interviews, published by The Huffington Post, with one of them featuring Ghislaine Maxwell, a British media heiress, who has been accused of being the "Madame" for Epstein's alleged sex trafficking circuit.
Video Released Days After Epstein's Apparent Suicide

The footage, presumably filmed on 6 December 2010, was released just days after Epstein committed suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Lower Manhattan, New York, where he was detained pending trial next year on child sex trafficking allegations after being arrested on 6 July.

"When the Prince came to the door I was stunned. He said a few words to the girl, who was very pretty, and then she walked off down the street in the direction of Central Park. If I hadn't known it was Prince Andrew, I would have thought he owned the place", an unnamed source told the Daily Mail last week as the video was released.

An earlier photo making the rounds on the Internet showed the Duke of York hugging Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who claimed in a 2015 lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, the alleged "Madame", that Andrew had groped her when she was a minor at Epstein's New York estate, and that she was used as a "sex slave" to please different famous and powerful men.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said in a Monday statement that Prince Andrew "has been appalled by the recent reports of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged crimes. His Royal Highness deplores the exploitation of any human being and the suggestion he would condone, participate in or encourage any such behaviour is abhorrent".

'Soft-Porn' Actress Who Used to Date Prince Andrew Shocked Queen With Lesbian Shower Scene - Reports
It's been a rocky month for Britain's Prince Andrew as court documents from the sex trafficking trial of Jeffrey Epstein have revealed that the son of Queen Elizabeth II allegedly groped an underage girl at the New York house of the disgraced US financier. But this is only the latest scandal that the Duke of York has found himself embroiled in.

Prince Andrew remains tight-lipped about the allegations of using Virginia Roberts Giuffre as a "sex slave" when she was a teen at Jeffrey Epstein's mansion in the 2000s, but denied them back in 2015, when the purported victim filed a lawsuit against professed procuress Ghislaine Maxwell.

At the time, his former girfriend, American actress Kathleen "Koo" Stark, broke her 32-year silence on their relationship to defend her ex-lover, saying that the accusations amounted to an "assassination of his character".

Their relationship was, in fact, scandalous, too.

Back in 1981, the Duke of York was set up on a blind date with Stark, who had been cast in Star Wars to play Luke Skywalker's friend, but her part was eventually cut out. The attraction was instant, and she would've become part of the royal family, if it were not for her "dirty" past, which, according to People, was a nightmare for the Queen.

At the age of 17, Koo starred in the film, Cruel Passion, an erotic drama, based on the novel, Justine, by the Marquis de Sade, where she played a young virgin thrust out of a French orphanage and into a depraved world of prostitution and perverse pleasures.

In 1976, she also played a young nymphet in the movie, The Awakening of Emily, which, according to reports, shocked Buckingham Palace: it featured Koo in a steamy lesbian love scene in a shower. The film became Britain's biggest-earning soft-core movie two years later.

Andrew and Koo were on a holiday on the island of Mustique in the Caribbean in 1982, when a photographer on a private trip recognised the couple and informed editors back home. Shortly thereafter, Koo was identified as a US soft-score porn actress, and her raunchy photos were splashed over newspapers' front pages.

After some outlets reported that Andrew had earlier taken Koo to meet his family at Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish castle, and potentially introduced her to his mother, Buckingham Palace broke its silence, saying, "We do not know if the Queen was aware of the girl's acting career before she was invited to Balmoral".

Andrew's mother was not there to read such headlines as, "Sex Scene Sizzlers From Andy's Girl", but she was reportedly dismayed by the X-rated occupation of her son's date.

"It is one thing for a prince to be seen with a film actress, but quite another to go away on holiday with a blue movie star. The Queen feels badly let down", a member of her staff was cited as saying, per People.

The couple called it quits in 1983, and he married Sarah Ferguson three years later. Stark later said that "the amount of attention and pressure on me became unbearable. It was a nightmare".

Despite ending their relationship, Koo jumped to the prince's defence in 2015, when he was accused of keeping an underage "sex slave", Virginia Roberts Giuffre.

"Prince Andrew is a dear friend of mine and godfather to my daughter. I've only known him to be honourable and honest, with Christian values. I dismissed the latest story as just another sexual slur to add to the list of criticisms of him in recent years. My first reaction was fury, then disbelief at the lurid allegations being made against a man I have known for more than 30 years", she wrote in a piece for The Mail.

The Duke of York wasn't charged with anything back in 2015, but multiple reports suggest that he may come under new scrutiny following Jeffrey Epstein's apparent suicide in his jail cell last week. According to the Daily Mail, citing an unnamed legal source, the FBI might shift their focus to Maxwell, who is said to have been friends with the royal, too.

Epstein was arrested on 6 July on multiple allegations of sex trafficking underage girls in the early 2000s and was awaiting trial next year at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York. He was found hanged in his cell last week a few days after he was taken off suicide watch following a suspected suicide attempt in mid-July.
