Turkish Police Find Radioactive Substance Used in Production of Nuclear Weapons in a Car - Officials

Police officers in the Turkish province of Bolu found 18 grams of californium radioactive substance used in the production of nuclear warheads in a car, according to a statement by the local administration.

Police officers stopped a car in the province of Bolu, near the Atatürk Forest Park.

"During the search, 18.1 grams of californium, which is used in nuclear warheads and nuclear power plants, were seized. This substance, valued at $72 million, requires special authorisation to import, transport and store research," the administration said in a statement.

It is noted that five people were detained in this case and an investigation is underway.

Nuclear weapon material worth $72mn seized in a car in Turkey
Five suspects were detained in the raid, and the mixture was taken to the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK) for a detailed analysis.

Californium is named after the place where it was synthesized back in 1950 – a laboratory at the University of California. Apart from being used to manufacture nukes and nuclear-powered reactors, the element also has a range of rather innocuous civilian applications. It can be a part of metal detectors and used in cancer treatment as well as oil, silver and gold mining operations. Still, the substance is highly dangerous and its production, distribution and transportation is restricted. Currently, only the US and Russia synthesize the isotope.

It is not the first time the Turkish police reported about a major bust involving californium.

In a scare in March last year, police in Ankara said it had seized a whopping 1.4kg of the same substance in a car following a tip-off. That time, though, it turned out to be false alarm, as the haul was later found to have no trace of nuclear or radioactive material, and was, in fact, organic matter.

South Koreans urge boycott of Japanese goods in row over WWII forced labor

South Koreans urge boycott of Japanese goods in row over WWII forced labor
Demands in South Korea for a boycott of Japanese goods are picking up steam after Tokyo imposed new trade restrictions on high-tech exports, rekindling a dispute over compensation for victims of historical war crimes.

By Friday, over 28,000 South Koreans had signed a petition on a government website calling for a boycott of Japanese products and tourism, and asking the government to “respond with force” to Tokyo’s new trade restrictions on exports of materials used to make smartphones and other electronics.

Relations between the two countries have long been marred by memories of Imperial Japan’s decades-long occupation of the Korean peninsula that ended in 1945 – in particular the use of forced labor and “comfort women” for military brothels.

Last year, a South Korean court ordered two Japanese firms to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in compensation to victims of forced labor, a move stridently opposed by Tokyo, which maintains that the labor dispute was settled when the two countries revived diplomatic ties in 1965. The contested court ruling ultimately prompted the new Japanese trade limits, imposed on Thursday.

In addition to the ramped up pressure for boycotts, on Friday Seoul responded to the trade cuts by dissolving a fund established in 2015 to compensate South Korean women forced to work in Japanese military brothels before and during World War II, prompting harsh words from Tokyo. It is unclear what will happen to the remaining money in the fund.

The standoff between the two US allies risks escalating into a trade war that could severely disrupt global electronics supplies. South Korea imported some $54 billion in Japanese goods last year, according to central bank data.

ジブラルタル海峡で英国がイランの大型タンカーを拿捕 イランが対抗措置で英国タンカーを拿捕も

Iran’s ‘duty’ to seize British tanker if UK fails to release captured ship – senior official at IRGC
Tehran should seize a British tanker if the UK does not release the oil supertanker captured by Royal Marines near Gibraltar, a senior official in Tehran has said.

On Thursday, British marines and Gibraltar police seized the Panama-flagged tanker off the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The vessel is owned by a Singaporean company.

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo claimed that the ship was transporting crude oil to Syria “in violation” of the EU sanctions placed on Damascus. According to Madrid, which considers the waters off Gibraltar to be its own, the British captured the ship at the request of the US. Officials in Washington, meanwhile, welcomed the seizure of the vessel, saying that it was carrying Iranian oil.

Later in the day, Iran summoned the British ambassador and slammed the seizure of the vessel as “a destructive step” and “a form of piracy.” Foreign Ministry's spokesperson, Abbas Mousavi argued that the sanctions against Syria are illegal under international law and Iran does not recognize them.

On Friday, Major General Mohsen Rezaee of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who is also the secretary of the influential Expediency Discernment Council, tweeted that Iran should be ready for counter measures.

Should Britain refuse to release the ship, it is the authorities’ “duty to seize a British oil tanker,” he argued.

The detained vessel had a 28-person crew, mostly Indians, but also some Pakistanis and Ukrainians. They are being interviewed as witnesses, not criminal suspects, Gibraltarian officials said. The authorities are currently working to establish the nature of the cargo and its destination.

Ali Rizk, a Middle East-based journalist and writer, told RT that, by seizing the tanker, Britain may have wanted to side with Washington by “playing its part in anti-Iranian policy.”

Spain Says Syria-Bound Tanker Was Seized Near Gibraltar on US Orders, Checks if Sovereignty Violated
Earlier, the territory's head stated that Gibraltar police and customs agencies detained a vessel suspected of transporting oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.

Spain's acting Foreign Minister Josep Borrell has stated that the detainment of the vessel was a US demand to the United Kingdom.

"We [Spain] were aware of this operation, patrol ships were controlling the area. We are studying the circumstances. The United States asked the United Kingdom to do this", Borrell told reporters.

Borrell added that the detainment of the vessel seems to have taken place in Spanish waters, stressing that it was necessary to investigate whether the ship's seizure affected Spanish sovereignty.

Earlier, UK Prime Minister Theresa May welcomed Gibraltar's move to halt a supertanker reportedly carrying crude oil to Syria, according to May's spokesperson. The official underlined that Gibraltar's actions send a clear message that violation of the sanctions will not be tolerated.

The Grace 1 vessel was detained on Thursday by Gibraltar police and customs agencies, along with the British Royal Marines.

Gibraltar's Chief Minister Fabian Picardo stated that the government had sufficient evidence that the supertanker was transporting crude oil to the Banyas Refinery in Syria.

Picardo noted that the refinery belonged to an entity subject to EU sanctions against Syria.

"We have detained the vessel and its cargo. This action arose from information giving the Gibraltar Government reasonable grounds to believe that the vessel, the Grace 1, was acting in breach of European Union sanctions against Syria. In fact, we have reason to believe that the Grace 1 was carrying its shipment of crude oil to the Banyas Refinery in Syria. That refinery is the property of an entity that is subject to European Union sanctions against Syria", Picardo said.

According to the maritime intelligence data, the Panamanian-flagged ship was carrying oil from Iran.

The European Union introduced sanctions against the Syrian government in May 2011 that affected 277 Syrian officials. The bloc also froze the assets of some 72 entities and put an embargo on Syrian oil.

Damascus has repeatedly condemned the pressure by the European Union, with President Bashar Assad stressing that it adds to the already tense situation in the country.

Iran Summons UK Envoy Over 'Illegal Seizure' of Oil Tanker Apparently Destined for Syria - Reports
Earlier, British Royal Marines and officials from the British colony of Gibraltar detained a vessel suspected of transporting oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned UK Ambassador to Iran Nicolas Hopton over what it described as the "illegal seizure" of an oil tanker carrying Iranian oil to Syria, Iranian state television has reported, citing Foreign Ministry spokesperson Abbas Mousavi.

Earlier, Spanish officials said that the Grace 1, a Panamanian-flagged supertanker carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria and seized by British patrol ships off Gibraltar, was detained at Washington's behest.

Royal Marines boarded the ship, which has a 300,000 tonne carrying capacity, early Thursday morning.

Prime Minister Theresa May later praised the seizure, with a Number 10 spokesperson saying Gibraltar had sent a 'clear message' that the UK would not tolerate any violation of the sanctions.

Gibraltar Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said there was evidence to suggest the tanker was attempting to deliver crude oil to the Banyas Refinery in northwest Syria, in breach of EU sanctions against Syria. The EU slapped the war-torn country with hard-hitting economic and energy sanctions in 2011.

Spain said it is still assessing the tanker seizure incident, since it took place in what Madrid says were its territorial waters.

The US enacted its own tough sanctions against Iran's oil sector in 2018, and threatened to apply secondary sanctions against any country or company that continues to engage in the purchase of energy resources from the country. The UK, which remains a party to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, widely known as the Iran nuclear deal, has not signed on to the US restrictions, although its companies have largely stopped trading in energy with the Islamic Republics in fear of economic repercussions.

Last week, the European Union announced that its INSTEX financial mechanism, meant to bypass US sanctions, had become operational. Iranian officials have said however that that system "isn't enough" to resolve the economic problems faced by Tehran due to crushing US sanctions.

Long-standing tensions between Iran and the US escalated sharply last month after an Iranian air defence missile shot down a $130 million US spy drone Iran said was operating in its airspace. The US maintains that the drone was flying over international waters. Following the drone's destruction, President Trump said he mulled airstrikes against multiple Iranian targets before backing down at the last minute.

The drone incident was just the latest in a series of back and forth developments which have hurt relations between the two countries. In May, the US deployed a carrier strike group to the Middle East, accusing Iran of posing an unspecified 'imminent threat' to US interests in the region. In mid-May and mid-June, a total of six tankers were attacked in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman in apparent sabotage attacks. The US accused Iran of responsibility for these incidents.

Tehran denied the claims and accused 'hawks' in the Trump administration and their Saudi, Emirati and Israeli allies of trying to inflame tensions to justify the US "economic war" against Iran.
