Official Reveals New US-Israeli Scenario to Turn Iraq into 2nd Libya
TEHRAN (FNA)- Asa'eb al-Haq Movement affiliated to the Iraqi popular forces of Hashd al-Shaabi warned that the US and Israel have hatched plots to disintegrate Iraq, using peaceful protests in the city of Basra.

The Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website quoted Secretary-General of Asa'eb al-Haq Sheikh Qais al-Khaz'ali as saying on Saturday that Washington and Tel Aviv seek to overthrow the Iraqi government and turn the country into a second Libya.

He added that the US wants to use the peaceful protests in Basra to decompose Iraq, warning that if their goal is materialized, the situation in Iraq will be the worst in the world and all of its cities will be separated from the country.

Meantime, the commander of Basra police announced in a statement on Saturday that mercenaries of foreign spy agencies want to turn the peaceful protests held to demand better government services in the region violent by attacking the public and private properties.

A number of people were injured in clashes with the local police amid protests against lack of basic services that recently took place in the Southeastern city of Basra, local media reported on Saturday, citing a source in the country's security forces.

The Iraqi Al-Sumaria broadcaster reported that the local police dispersed protesters in the center of the city using tear gas and detained several people.

Police officers stopped protesters from getting closer to a house of a governor, according to the broadcaster.

Previous protests in Basra broke out in early September when people took to the streets to express their discontent over shortages of drinking water and electricity. Military troops were called in after demonstrations turned violent.

UK won’t fix ties with Russia until it stops ‘irresponsible & destabilizing’ activity – May to Putin
Outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May once again produced a little bit of déjà vu as she told Vladimir Putin there won’t be any hope of restoring UK-Russia ties unless Moscow stops being “an irresponsible and destabilizing” actor.

During a tense one-to-one exchange with Vladimir Putin in Osaka, Theresa May said “there cannot be a normalization of our bilateral relationship until Russia stops the irresponsible and destabilizing activity.” Predictably, the outgoing British Prime Minister then jumped to her well-worn allegations about the Skripal poisoning affair.

According to her spokesperson, May naturally mentioned “the use of a deadly nerve agent on the streets of Salisbury,” claiming again that the UK has “irrefutable evidence that Russia was behind the attack.”

Returning to the future of UK-Russia ties, May said that “we remain open to a different relationship, but for that to happen the Russian government must choose a different path.”

Putin, however, believes all this is the opposite of the truth. The scandal surrounding the Salisbury incident did sour relations between Russia and the UK, thus damaging economic ties, he had earlier told the Financial Times.

“All this fuss about spies and counterspies, it is not worth serious interstate relations … We need to just leave it alone and let security agencies deal with it,” he insisted.

These “spy scandals” led to a deadlock in relations “so we could not develop our ties normally and support business people,” he said. The UK is interested in fully restoring bilateral relations, just as Russia is, Putin stated. “I hope, at least, that a few preliminary steps will be made.”

He reiterated that the whole Skripal case had little to do with Russia as London has, right to this day, failed to present any credible proof of Moscow’s alleged involvement. “They say, ‘You poisoned the Skripals.’ Firstly, this must be proved.”

Thunderbolts of Lightning, Gamma Rays Exciting
TEHRAN (FNA)- Scientists have discovered a connection between lightning strikes and two kinds of gamma-ray phenomena in thunderclouds. The research suggests that in certain conditions, weak gamma-ray glows from thunderclouds may precede lightning bolts and their accompanying gamma-ray flashes.

University of Tokyo graduate student Yuuki Wada with colleagues from Japan have discovered a connection between lightning strikes and two kinds of gamma-ray phenomena in thunderclouds. The research suggests that in certain conditions, weak gamma-ray glows from thunderclouds may precede lightning bolts and their accompanying gamma-ray flashes.

In the city of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, in central Japan, Wada and colleagues work with local schools and businesses to install radiation monitors onto buildings. These radiation monitors are not there due to some worry about local radiation levels, though. They form a network, the purpose of which is to detect radiation coming from the sky. It may surprise some, but it's been known for around 30 years that thunderstorms can bring with them gamma-ray activity.

"Forever, people have seen lightning and heard thunder. These were the ways we could experience this power of nature," said Wada. "With the discovery of electromagnetism, scientists learned to see lightning with radio receivers. But now we can observe lightning in gamma rays -- ionizing radiation. It's like having four eyes to study the phenomena."

There are two known kinds of gamma-ray phenomena associated with thunderclouds: gamma-ray glows, weak emissions which last about a minute, and short-lived terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs), which occur as lightning strikes and are much more intense than gamma-ray glows. Both occur in regions of thunderclouds sandwiched between layers of varying charge. The charged regions accelerate electrons to near the speed of light. At these speeds, referred to as relativistic, electrons that stray very close to the nuclei of nitrogen atoms in the air slow down a little and emit a telltale gamma ray. This is called bremsstrahlung radiation.

"During a winter thunderstorm in Kanazawa, our monitors detected a simultaneous TGF and lightning strike. This is fairly common, but interestingly we also saw a gamma-ray glow in the same area at the same time," continued Wada. "Furthermore, the glow abruptly disappeared when the lightning struck. We can say conclusively the events are intimately connected and this is the first time this connection has been observed."

The mechanism underlying lightning discharge is highly sought after and this research may offer previously unknown insights. Wada and team intend to further their investigation to explore the possibility that gamma-ray glows don't just precede lightning strikes, but may in fact cause them. Radiation levels of the gamma-ray flashes are quite low, approximately a tenth the level one may receive from a typical medical X-ray.

"Our finding marks a milestone in lightning research and we will soon double our number of radiation sensors from 23 to about 40 or 50. With more sensors, we could greatly improve predictive models," explained Wada. "It's hard to say right now, but with sufficient sensor data, we may be able to predict lightning strikes within about 10 minutes of them happening and within around 2 kilometers of where they happen. I'm excited to be part of this ongoing research."

Further investigations will likely still take place in Kanazawa as the area has rare and ideal meteorological conditions for this kind of work. Most radiation observations in storms come from airborne or mountain-based stations as thunderclouds are generally very high up. But winter storms in Kanazawa bring thunderclouds surprisingly close to the ground, ideal for study with the low-cost portable monitors developed by the research team.

The researchers created these unique portable radiation monitors in part with technology derived from space-based satellite observatories designed for astrophysics experiments. This is appropriate as the data from this kind of research could be useful for those who research astrophysics and in particular solar physics in the context of particle acceleration. But there is a more down-to-earth offshoot as well.

"Paleontologists who study life from the last 50,000 years or so use a technique called carbon-14 dating to determine the age of a sample. The technique relies on knowledge of the levels of two kinds of carbon, carbon-12 and carbon-14," said Wada. "It's commonly thought carbon-14 is created by cosmic rays at a roughly constant rate, hence the predictive power of the technique. But there's a suggestion thunderstorms may alter the ratio of carbon-12 to carbon-14, which may slightly change the accuracy of or calibration required for carbon-14 dating to work."

Wada and colleagues will continue to unpick the mysteries of lightning, one of nature's most captivating and iconic phenomena. An upcoming collaborative project based in France will launch a dedicated satellite for worldwide lightning observations from space.

Pentagon investigating how Javelin missiles ended up with Libyan militants
The Pentagon has launched an investigation into how a cache of American-made missiles ended up in the hands of the Libyan National Army – a military group vying to depose the US and UN-supported government in Tripoli.

The stockpile of Javelin anti-tank missiles –four shoulder-fired units that cost more than $170,000 each– was discovered in the city of Gharyan, after a government counteroffensive captured the town from the LNA several days ago.

The US-made missiles, along with Chinese-made laser-guided artillery shells, were shown to journalists by forces linked to the Tripoli government. Markings on their containers indicate that the Javelins were initially sold by Washington to the United Arab Emirates in 2008.

Produced by defense giants Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, the FGM-148 Javelin uses infrared guidance to arc a missile into the air and destroy a tank from above while its user remains safe behind cover. It can destroy all main battle tanks fielded worldwide.
