Fake news to cover failed coup! Venezuela, Russia respond to Pompeo’s claim Maduro almost fled
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro refuted the statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo that he’d almost escaped to Cuba, but that Russians had talked him out of it. Moscow called it ‘fake news.’

“Mike Pompeo said that I, Maduro, had a plane ready to go to Cuba, to flee and that the Russians got him off the plane and forbade him to leave the country. Mr Pompeo, please, what lack of seriousness,” Maduro said, during a nationwide address announcing the “defeat” of the failed coup attempt.

At the height of civil unrest on Tuesday, Pompeo appeared on CNN claiming Maduro had “an airplane on the tarmac” all set to leave for Cuba, before the “Russians indicated he should stay.”

Both Russian and Venezuelan foreign ministries pilloried the American for peddling what they called ‘fake news.’

“Making up fake news is a very sad way to accept that the coup you backed has failed... once again. Diplomacy has to be restored in the US Government,” Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza tweeted.

“Washington tried its best to demoralize the Venezuelan army and now used fakes as a part of an information war,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement to CNN.

In a Tuesday night appearance on national television, Maduro declared that the opposition had attempted to impose an “illegitimate government” with the support of the United States but failed because of the loyalty shown by the military and the people who stood firm on protecting Bolivarian revolutionary ideals.

The violence in Caracas erupted on Tuesday morning, after US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido, flanked by a few dozen men in military uniform, released a short video calling on the army to rise up and oust Maduro from power.

Fire up the plane! Pompeo tells Maduro to flee Venezuela via CNN
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was ready to fly away to Cuba and leave Caracas to the US-backed opposition leader, but Russia talked him out of it, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed in interviews.

“He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning, as we understand it. Russians indicated he should stay,” Pompeo told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Tuesday afternoon, even as reports were coming in that armed supporters of US-backed “interim president” Juan Guaido were seeking asylum in the embassies of Brazil and Chile in Caracas.

For over a month now, the US has sought to preserve the fantasy that Guaido enjoys popular support, by arguing that Caracas was really under “Cuban occupation.” Having already embraced the ‘Russiagate’ scare-mongering, Pompeo is apparently now adding Russia to the mix.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer did not seem interested to press the point, however, asking Pompeo instead who was worse, Cuba or Russia. A few minutes later, Pompeo repeated his claim about Russia on Fox News, sending pundits there into a frenzy of speculation about Moscow and Trump as well.

Fox replayed Pompeo's remarks later in the evening, before an interview with a former Venezuelan diplomat who spoke in favor of regime change.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza responded by accusing his American colleague of "making up fake news."

Guaido and his backers in Washington had seemed sure Maduro would resign back in January, when the opposition politician declared himself the new president. It didn’t happen. Guaido’s attempt to force open the Venezuela-Colombia border in late February likewise met with failure. On Tuesday, armed men in blue armbands sought to take over an airbase in Caracas as Guaido called on Venezuela’s military to defect. They didn’t.

Pompeo maintained that the situation in Caracas was “incredibly fluid” and that “senior leaders inside the Maduro government” had told the US they were prepared to leave the country. He also said he was “convinced that the Venezuelan people are going to get their democracy back.”

Along with national security adviser John Bolton, US Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida) – some of the loudest voices for regime change in Caracas over the past four months – Pompeo has a strange definition of “democracy,” that seems to include US appointing presidents of other countries.

http://www.asyura2.com/13/genpatu31/msg/158.html

Iran: US Responsible for Possible IRGC-CENTCOM Clash in Persian Gulf

FARSNEWS2019/5/1
Iran: US Responsible for Possible IRGC-CENTCOM Clash in Persian Gulf
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyed Abbas Araqchi warned that Washington is solely to be blamed for any possible clash between the forces of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and those of the US Navy Central Command (CENTCOM) in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere.

The IRGC forces and those of the US Navy may engage in clashes in the Persian Gulf and elsewhere, and that’s blamed on the US government which fanned the flames by blacklisting the Iranian elite military body, Araqchi said on Tuesday, in an address to the Institute of Strategic Thinking (SDE) in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara.

“The two forces, which have been reciprocally designated as terrorist groups, may engage in clashes in the Persian Gulf or any other region,” Araqchi warned.

“There is no doubt that the US will be held accountable for such a situation,” he added.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a decree on Tuesday, communicated a recently approved legislation in support of the IRGC against the US.

President Rouhani mandated all relevant executive bodies of the country to act according to the new statute, following its approval at the parliament last Tuesday.

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani sent the act to the head of the executive body on Monday after all legal procedures of the law were specified by the legislature.

The bill was put for voting during an open session of the parliament last week.

Reciprocal designation of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organization, requiring the government to act “decisively” against any US measure potentially compromising the Islamic Republic’s interests, requiring the government and Armed Forces to preemptively prevent US forces from using available resources against those interests, requiring Iran’s intelligence apparatuses to identify CENTCOM commanders and those in charge of its affiliates to enable their prosecution, and tasking the Judiciary to mandate such prosecution, requiring the Iranian government with supporting all the natural and legal persons, who cooperate with the IRGC thus lying in the way of harm by the United States are among the articles of the bill approved today by the parliament.

Article 6, which mandates legal, political, and diplomatic endeavors aimed at shuttering the US’s regional bases and blocking the US forces’ access to regional resources and Article 7, which subjects countries and people cooperating with the US designation to retaliatory Iranian efforts were also approved by the lawmakers.

Other Articles of the bill also subject any Iranian organizations potentially withholding support for the IRGC citing US sanctions to punitive measures, task the government with legal measures against the US at international organizations, task the Planning and Budget Organization to allocate the required budget for implementing the articles of the motion, require the government to present a quarterly report on its performance in countering the US measures to the national security commission, require the Ministry of Intelligence and other intelligence bodies to identify all those involved in the US designation, and stress that all tasks in the bill related to the Armed Forces are to be implemented according to the directives of the Commander-in-Chief of the Iranian Armed Forces Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Article 14 of the bill also stresses that the law is to be put into force upon ratification.

Earlier this month, the IRGC was formally blacklisted by the US as a "Foreign Terrorist Organization" following a relevant announcement by President Donald Trump on 8 April.

Responding to Washington's move, Iran immediately declared the US as "state sponsor of terrorism" and American forces in the region "terrorist groups".

Iran's top security body, the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), in a statement declared the United States a “terrorist government”, and blacklisted the "CENTCOM and all its affiliates a terrorist group”.

The SNSC - that is headed by President Hassan Rouhani - condemned Washington's move, calling it “an illegal and dangerous action” that poses a “major threat to regional and international peace and security and grossly violates the rules of international law".

The statement further condemned the US decision as “unlawful and unreasonable action” prompted by the Islamic Republic's regional influence and success in fighting against terrorists, and blamed CENTCOM for harming Iran’s national security as well as ruining the lives of “innocent Iranian and non-Iranian individuals” to promote the US “aggressive policies” in West Asia (the Middle-East).

"The Islamic Republic of Iran regards this baseless move as a major threat to regional and international peace and security and a blatant violation of the compelling rules of international law and the United Nations Charter," Iran's top security body reiterated.

Also, former IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari blasted Washington for designating the IRGC as a "terrorist organization", stressing that his forces would further increase power in the year ahead.

General Jafari, who was succeeded by his deputy Major General Hossein Salami last week, described the US move as "ridiculous", saying that "the IRGC is in the hearts of the people".

“God willing, the IRGC will grow stronger in the coming year in defensive and offensive fields more than before,” he said.

“Much to enemies’ dismay, the IRGC and the Army will stand together and will continue to support the deprived and the oppressed people all over the world without fear,” General Jafari said.
