Mediterranean Diet Boosts Endurance Exercise Within Days, Study Finds
TEHRAN (FNA)- Researchers have found that eating a Mediterranean diet can improve athletes' endurance exercise performance after just four days.

Researchers at Saint Louis University have found that eating a Mediterranean diet can improve athletes' endurance exercise performance after just four days.

In a small study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, investigators found that participants ran a 5K six percent faster after eating a Mediterranean diet than after eating a Western diet. Researchers found no difference between the two diets in performance in anaerobic exercise tests.

The Mediterranean diet includes whole fruits and vegetables, nuts, olive oil and whole grains, and avoids red and processed meats, dairy, trans and saturated fats and refined sugars.

By comparison, the Western diet is characterized by low intake of fruit, vegetables and unrefined or minimally processed oils and high intakes of trans and saturated fats, dairy, refined sugars, refined and highly processed vegetable oils, sodium and processed foods.

Senior researcher Edward Weiss, Ph.D., professor of nutrition and dietetics at SLU, says the Mediterranean diet is well-established as having numerous health benefits. He and his team hypothesized that the diet's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, more alkaline pH and dietary nitrates might lead to improved exercise performance.

"Many individual nutrients in the Mediterranean diet improve exercise performance immediately or within a few days. Therefore, it makes sense that a whole dietary pattern that includes these nutrients is also quick to improve performance," Weiss said. "However, these benefits were also quickly lost when switching to the Western diet, highlighting the importance of long-term adherence to the Mediterranean diet."

The study enrolled seven women and four men in a randomized-sequence crossover study. The participants ran five kilometers on a treadmill on two occasions -- once after four days on a Mediterranean diet and on another occasion after four days on a Western diet, with a period of nine to 16 days separating the two tests.

Weiss says the study found the 5K run time was six percent faster after the Mediterranean diet than the Western diet despite similar heart rates and ratings of perceived exertion.

"This study provides evidence that a diet that is known to be good for health is also good for exercise performance," Weiss said. "Like the general population, athletes and other exercise enthusiasts commonly eat unhealthy diets. Now they have an additional incentive to eat healthy."

Other researchers on the study include Michelle Baker, Kristen DeCesare, Abby Johnson, Kathleen Kress and Cynthia Inman.

Codepink Co-Founder Scared by FBI Upon Arrival from Iran Visit
TEHRAN (FNA)- The co-founder of Codepink, an anti-war NGO based in the US, claimed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents have intimidated her and a colleague, another member of the peace group, after they came back to Washington D.C. from Iran.

Speaking to The Real News Network, Medea Benjamin stated that she and Mary Ann Wright, a retired United States Army colonel and retired US State Department official, got "called to a secondary screening" after they returned from Iran.

Benjamin continued that they were greeted by "FBI agents who had a whole dossier on us, of what we did which mostly from our own websites and our blogs".

"They also have a packet of information for us about the sanctions on Iran... the US government policies towards Iran... the issue about registering as a foreign agent, indictment of Iranian groups to scare us away from talking to them," she added.

"Yes, it was not the warm welcome that we received when we went to Iran," Benjamin stressed.

Code Pink activists visited Iran in February and met with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and students at University of Tehran. After the meeting, Benjamin criticized US President Donald Trump for "ramping up confrontation with Iran".

Few days later, they had a press conference at Fars News Agency (FNA) College of Journalism in Tehran, lashing out at Washington for its hostile policies and sanctions against Iran and warning that the US' wrong policies could provoke war in the Middle-East.

Raqqa: US Army Choppers Rescue ISIL Commanders Holding Valuable Intel
TEHRAN (FNA)- The American Army has relocated several ISIL commanders with important information on the US by conducting heliborne operations in Raqqa province.

The US-led coalition helped four senior ISIL commanders to escape Raqqa province in a heliborne operation that included six helicopters flying in al-Rafedin region in al-Tabaqa town in Southwestern Raqqa, local sources in Raqqa said.

The sources, meantime, noted that the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had besieged the region where heliborne operations were conducted.

Meantime, the Arabic-language service of the Russian Sputnik News Agency said that the relocated ISIL terrorist commanders had previously fled to Raqqa after the Syrian and Russian armies conducted military operations to set free the city of al-Qoryatayn in Homs province.

It noted that the ISIL commanders most probably have secrets of the US Army troops with them.

In a relevant development last month, a source close to Kurdish forces said that the US Army was taking ISIL's gold treasure that is estimated to weigh around 50 tons from Eastern Syria to America.

The Kurdish-language Bas News quoted a Kurdish source as saying that the Americans have transferred tens of tons of the gold ingots they have seized from the ISIL terrorists in Baghouz region in Southeastern Deir Ezzur to their own country and only kept a small portion of the treasure to be given to the Kurdish fighters.

The source who spoke on the condition of anonymity reiterated that about 50 tons of ISIL's gold has been sent to the US from the US military base in Kobani in Northeastern Aleppo.

The report comes as the US has been using the airport in Southern Kobani for transferring consignments and military equipment in recent years.

In a relevant development also month, the US Army troops took out a sum of 40 tons of gold ingots belonging to the ISIL in heliborne operations after agreeing with the terrorist group and while Washington is preparing to announce the end of ISIL in Eastern Euphrates.

"The US troops in concordance with the ISIL terrorist group relocated big boxes packed with ISIL's gold treasure on several helicopters from al-Dashisheh region in Southern Hasaka," the SANA news agency quoted local sources in Eastern Deir Ezzur said.

The sources pointed to boxes containing 40 tons of gold ingots that the ISIL had hidden in the Eastern part of al-Shadadi city, and said that the ISIL had stolen the treasure of gold from the Iraqi city of Mosul and different parts of Syria.

The US troops reportedly took out a group of ISIL terrorist commanders from Eastern Syria in two heliborne operations in Hajin region of Eastern Deir Ezzur and al-Dashisheh in Southern Hasaka and they were directed to the place where the gold treasure was hidden.

Also last month, the London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) said the Washington-backed militants were trying to find and seize millions of dollars and at least 40 tons of gold left behind by the ISIL terrorist group.

The SOHR reported that the ISIL terrorists had stolen about 40 tons of gold and millions of dollars from the population once under their control in Iraq and Syria, which was later transferred to Eastern Euphrates in Eastern Deir Ezzur.

"The US-led coalition forces and the SDF deliberately do not target the areas under the control of the ISIL terrorists and commanders in Eastern Euphrates in Deir Ezzur as they are trying to locate this treasure by forcing the ISIL militants to speak about its location after surrendering," it quoted informed sources as saying.

They noted that part of the cash dollars and gold have been transferred from Turkey to the areas under the ISIL control by Turkish brokers and intelligence service who have close ties with the ISIL.

Meantime, an SDF Commander, Adnan Afrin, said that the ISIL is now under the siege of the SDF in an area no larger than one square kilometers in Eastern Euphrates.

In a relevant development earlier in February, a prominent Syrian military expert revealed that Washington plans to transfer the remnants of the ISIL terrorists from Eastern Euphrates to other regions through Turkey and Iraq.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted Brigadier General Mohammad Issa as saying that less than 600 ISIL militants are stationed in a 4-km/sq region in Eastern Euphrates who will be soon evacuated from the region to foreign territories.

He added that the operations to transfer these militants will be conducted similar to the operations earlier carried out to evacuate the ISIL terrorists from Raqqa, saying that the US forces will transfer them via Iraq or Turkey to some other Arab states for future operations.

Issa questioned the US forces' claims of fighting against the terrorist groups along with the SDF, stressing that the Syrian army will soon move to retake control over this region.

Media reports said last Sunday that the US army had agreed with the ISIL on the latter's exit from areas under Washington's control in Eastern Euphrates.

The US-led coalition troops and the SDF had reached an agreement with the ISIL terrorists on the militants' retreat from areas under the control of the US and its allied forces, the Arabic-language al-Mayadeen TV news channel reported.

It pointed to the preparations by the ISIL to move its terrorists out of Eastern Euphrates, and said that the ISIL terrorists might be transferred to al-Anbar desert of Badiya al-Tanf in Western Iraq.

The report comes as the SDF claimed that it had started the final battle for uprooting the remaining elements of the ISIL from Eastern Euphrates.

Also the Arabic-language service of RT quoted media activists as saying on Saturday that the US-led coalition forces have carried out heliborne operations in the Eastern Badiyeh of Deir Ezzur.

It added that two US Apache helicopters have landed in Falitah region of Eastern Badiyeh of Deir Ezzur, taking away 7 big boxes whose contents were not known.

Security Expert Informs of Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi's Global Recruitment Plan
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iraqi Kurdish security expert underlined the presence of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Iraqi territories, saying that he plots to revive the ISIL and recruit fresh terrorists.

Hawkar al-Jaf was quoted by the Arabic-language Baghdad al-Youm as saying that Baghdadi has moved from Syria to Iraq revive the ISIL and is now stationed in al-Tharthar region near the border with Samarra island.

He added that al-Baghdadi is largely relying on recruitment of the sons of those ISIL militants who have been killed in the battlefields and the Caliphate's Lion Cubs, the children trained by the terrorist group for operations.

Al-Jaf said that the ISIL plots to show off its power militarily and in media by launching unique operations in Iraq and other countries of the world and media warfare to recruit forces across the world.

He added given the fact that Baghdadi is protected in Iraq under heavy security measures, he might be able to carry out his plan in the region and the world for ISIL's survival.

In relevant remarks on Monday, a senior member of the Iraqi parliament accused the US of sheltering al-Baghdadi in Ein al-Assad military base in Western Iraq, and warned that 3,000 ISIL terrorists are being trained in the country to foment insecurity again.

Hassan Salem, the representative of al-Fatah coalition in the Iraqi parliament, was quoted by the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website as saying that al-Baghdadi was being supported by the US forces in the Western desert of Iraq.

He added that Ein al-Assad base provides logistical support for al-Baghdadi, noting that he is freely trafficking between Iraq and Syria with their backing.

Salem also said that the US forces have trained and equipped over 3,000 ISIL terrorists in Wadi al-Houran region with the aim of fomenting insecurity and revival of the ISIL in Iraq and sent them to Nineveh, al-Anbar and Saladin provinces.

He added that the US support for al-Baghdadi and other terrorists in Iraq comes as the Iraqi parliament plans to approve a bill to expel all foreign forces from the country.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Tens of ISIL terrorists have been transferred to the US base in Deir Ezzur and the American forces have evacuated family members of ISIL ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and other senior commanders from the Eastern parts of the province, pro-militant media said.

The London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Wednesday that over 700 people, including 40 ISIL militants, a large number of them from Turkistani and Asian origins, left Eastern Deir Ezzur on 15 trucks belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

It added that the ISIL members have been transferred to the US-led coalition's base in Deir Ezzur, noting that 51,750 people with different nationalities have been evacuated from the region so far.

Meantime, the Arabic-language Baghdad al-Youm quoted a local Iraqi source as saying that the SDF has transferred 21 families of ISIL militants, including the family members of al-Baghdadi, from Baqouz region in Eastern Deir Ezzur to an unknown place after an agreement with the US forces.

In a relevant development on Monday, a senior member of the Iraqi parliament accused the US of sheltering ISIL ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Ein al-Assad military base in Western Iraq, and warned that 3,000 ISIL terrorists are being trained in the country to foment insecurity again.

Several Senior ISIL Commanders Riot against Al-Baghdadi in Eastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Six senior ISIL commanders, including an Iraqi and a Libyan commander, in Baqouz region of Eastern Deir Ezzur declared that they will no more fight under the command of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Arabic-language Baghdad al-Youm news website reported on Thursday that the decision was made after hundreds of ISIL terrorists surrendered to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) upon Baghdadi's order, adding that there are deep differences among the ISIL members and commanders in Eastern Deir Ezzur.

It added that the 6 commanders wanted the ISIL militants to remain in the region and fight against the Kurds.

Thousands of ISIL terrorists have left their last occupied positions in Eastern Euphrates so far after an agreement between the US-led coalition and the SDF with the ISIL.

The London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) reported that a sum of 58,000 people, including 6,000 ISIL militants, have evacuated the last areas under their control in Eastern Euphrates.

Media reports said on Wednesday that over 2,000 ISIL militants had left their last base in Eastern Euphrates with the help of the US-led coalition and Syrian Democratic Forces as Washington and the SDF were planning to declare the end of the ISIL in Eastern Euphrates.

"More than two thousands ISIL terrorists who were stationed in al-Baqouz town in Eastern Euphrates near Syria's borders with Iraq surrendered to the SDF on Monday after they were given a safe corridor," the Kurdish-language Bas News website reported.

Meantime, the SOHR reported that a sum of 3,140 ISIL militants and their families left the last areas under their control in Eastern Euphrates.

The pro-militant Baldi news website also pointed to the presence of about 1,000 ISIL terrorists in Baqouz, and said that the surrendered ISIL militants will be transferred to the US-controlled Omar oilfield.

Meantime, sources close to the SDF said they would impose full control over the town of Baqouz to declare the end of ISIL in Eastern Euphrates in coming days.

Iraqi Sources: Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi Planning to Organize ISIL in Western Iraq
TEHRAN (FNA)- ISIL leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has entered Western Iraq to reorganize the terrorist group there amid contradictory reports on his fate, media reports said.

Al-Baghdadi, accompanied by a number of his senior commanders, has arrived in al-Hasiniat region in Al-Anbar desert, the Arabic-language Baghdad al-Youm news website quoted an intel source as saying.

The source noted that al-Baghdadi is trying to reorganize the ISIL terrorist group by utilizing al-Anbar desert and turning it into ISIL's new base.

Meantime, strategic expert Hesham al-Hashemi told Baghdad l-Youm that al-Baghdadi is in a region in Raveh Island or West of al-Sarsar in al-Anbar province.

In a relevant development on Saturday, Iraqi sources revealed that the US wants to occupy the Western parts of the country with the help of the ISIL terrorists after transferring them from Eastern Syria to its bases in the region.

Mohammad al-Baldawi, the representative of al-Bana coalition in the Iraqi parliament, told the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website that the US forces have transferred all terrorists and their family members, who have recently surrendered at the Syrian borders, to the US bases in Iraq.

He referred to collaboration between the US and the ISIL terrorists, and warned that the terrorist group will be reorganized for operations against Iraq's security.

Meantime, Qusai al-Anbari, the head of Badr organization's office, said that the ISIL militants have been sheltered in the US military bases and the desert areas near these bases, adding that all terrorist operations in al-Anbar are conducted with Americans' direct supervision.

He added that the US forces stationed in al-Anbar want to pave the ground for the ISIL to occupy certain cities and areas in the region.

In relevant remarks earlier this month, Iraq's security experts disclosed that the US Army was training ISIL terrorists in Al-Anbar province after relocating them from Syria to Iraq to prepare them for creating insecurity in the country.

"The US Army troops are preparing and training the ISIL militants in al-Qadaf and Wadi al-Houran regions of Al-Anbar province with the aim of carrying out terrorist attacks and restarting insecurity in Iraq," al-Ma'aloumeh quoted Kazim al-Haaj, an Iraqi security expert, as saying.

He noted that according to the intel obtained from Iraqi security forces in Al-Anbar province, the US had transferred the ISIL terrorists on Apache and Chinook helicopters to Iraq.

Pointing to the occupation of several regions in Western Iraq, including Wadi al-Houran and al-Qadaf, al-Haaj reiterated that the US Army was using this opportunity to deploy the ISIL terrorists after training them in areas where it plans to make hot.

Syria's Artifacts, ISIL's Foreign Commanders Transferred to Turkey by Kurdish Fighters, Ankara-Backed Militants
TEHRAN (FNA)- More than 142 families of ISIL commanders and foreign militants together with Syria's historic monuments have been relocated to Turkey from Eastern Euphrates with the help of the US-backed Kurdish fighters and Ankara's allied militants, Arab media reports said.

The Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper quoted dissident sources as saying that a network comprising tens of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Ankara-backed militants transferred the historic monuments as well as the ISIL commanders, terrorists and their families to Northern Aleppo and from there to Turkey.

The sources explained that over 142 families of the ISIL commanders and terrorists have been relocated to Turkey from Eastern Euphrates on military vehicles after paying cash up to $90,000.

Meantime, a number of Syrian militants and their families have also moved towards Idlib province.

In a relevant development on Thursday, pro-militant media reported that tens of ISIL terrorists have been transferred to the US base in Deir Ezzur and the American forces have evacuated family members of ISIL ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and other senior commanders from the Eastern parts of the province, pro-militant media said.

The London-based Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Wednesday that over 700 people, including 40 ISIL militants, a large number of them from Turkistani and Asian origins, left Eastern Deir Ezzur on 15 trucks belonging to the SDF.

Hassan Salem, the representative of al-Fatah coalition in the Iraqi parliament, was quoted by the Arabic-language al-Ma'aloumeh news website as saying on Monday that al-Baghdadi was being supported by the US forces in the Western desert of Iraq.

He added that Ein al-Assad base provides logistical support for al-Baghdadi, noting that he is freely trafficking between Iraq and Syria with their backing.

Salem also said that the US forces had trained and equipped over 3,000 ISIL terrorists in Wadi al-Houran region with the aim of fomenting insecurity and revival of the ISIL in Iraq and sent them to Nineveh, al-Anbar and Saladin provinces.

He added that the US support for al-Baghdadi and other terrorists in Iraq comes as the Iraqi parliament plans to approve a bill to expel all foreign forces from the country.

A Nap a Day Keeps High Blood Pressure at Bay
TEHRAN (FNA)- It seems that napping may do more than just reboot our energy level and improve our mood. New research has found that people who took advantage of a midday snooze were more likely to have a noticeable drop in blood pressure compared with those who didn't nap.

It seems that napping may do more than just reboot our energy level and improve our mood. New research being presented at the American College of Cardiology's 68th Annual Scientific Session found that people who took advantage of a midday snooze were more likely to have a noticeable drop in blood pressure compared with those who didn't nap.

"Midday sleep appears to lower blood pressure levels at the same magnitude as other lifestyle changes. For example, salt and alcohol reduction can bring blood pressure levels down by 3 to 5 mm Hg," said Manolis Kallistratos, MD, cardiologist at the Asklepieion General Hospital in Voula, Greece, and one of the study's co-authors, adding that a low-dose antihypertensive medication usually lowers blood pressure levels by 5 to 7 mm Hg, on average.

Overall, taking a nap during the day was associated with an average 5 mm Hg drop in blood pressure, which researchers said is on par with what would be expected from other known blood pressure-lowering interventions. In addition, for every 60 minutes of midday sleep, 24-hour average systolic blood pressure decreased by 3 mm Hg.

"These findings are important because a drop in blood pressure as small as 2 mm Hg can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack by up to 10 percent," Kallistratos said. "Based on our findings, if someone has the luxury to take a nap during the day, it may also have benefits for high blood pressure. Napping can be easily adopted and typically doesn't cost anything."

This is the first study to prospectively assess midday sleep's affect on blood pressure levels among people whose blood pressure is reasonably controlled, according to the researchers. The same research team previously found midday naps to be associated with reduced blood pressure levels and fewer antihypertensive medications being prescribed among people with very high blood pressure readings.

"The higher the blood pressure levels, the more pronounced any effort to lower it will appear. By including people with relatively well-controlled blood pressure, we can feel more confident that any significant differences in blood pressure readings are likely due to napping," Kallistratos said.

The study included 212 people with a mean blood pressure of 129.9 mm Hg. They were 62 years old on average and just over half were female. About 1 out of 4 participants were smokers and/or had Type 2 diabetes. The groups were similar in terms of risk factors for heart disease except there were more smokers in the napping group. Researchers assessed and recorded blood pressure for 24 hours consecutively, midday sleep time (the average duration was 49 minutes), lifestyle habits (for example, alcohol, coffee and salt consumption, physical activity levels), and pulse wave velocity, a measure of stiffness in the arteries. Participants wore an ambulatory blood pressure monitor to measure and track blood pressure at regular intervals during routine daily living, rather than just one time in the clinic. At study recruitment, participants also underwent an echocardiogram, an ultrasound of the heart that shows its structure and function.

In their analyses, researchers adjusted for factors known to influence blood pressure levels, including age, gender, lifestyle and medications. There were no differences in terms of the number of antihypertensive medications taken between the two groups, and pulse wave velocity tests and echocardiograms were also similar.

Overall, average 24-hour systolic blood pressure was 5.3 mm Hg lower among those who napped compared with those who didn't (127.6 mm Hg vs 132.9 mm Hg). When looking at both blood pressure numbers, people who slept during the day had more favorable readings (128.7/76.2 vs 134.5/79.5 mm Hg). There also appeared to be a direct linear relationship between time asleep and blood pressure; as reported, for each hour of napping, the average 24-hour systolic blood pressure lowered by 3 mm Hg.

"We obviously don't want to encourage people to sleep for hours on end during the day, but on the other hand, they shouldn't feel guilty if they can take a short nap, given the potential health benefits," Kallistratos said. "Even though both groups were receiving the same number of medications and blood pressure was well controlled, there was still a significant decrease in blood pressure among those who slept during midday."

Researchers said the findings are further bolstered because patients had similar dipping blood pressure rates at night (natural drops during nighttime sleep), meaning that any reductions in ambulatory blood pressure were separate from this phenomenon and give greater confidence that reductions in ambulatory blood pressure could be due to daytime napping.

Further research is needed to validate these findings. Although it falls outside the scope of this study, researchers said one could speculate that along with the heart-healthy Mediterranean diet endemic to this region, the cultural acceptance of midday napping may also play a role in the healthier profile seen in these populations.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. Many don't know they have it because there are often no signs or symptoms; over time, high blood pressure increases the risk of both heart attack and stroke.

Kallistratos will present the study, "Mid-day Sleep Effects as Potent as Recommended Lifestyle Changes in Patients With Arterial Hypertension," on Monday, March 18.
