New Book Claims Sergei Skripal Did Not Believe Moscow Poisoned Him
TEHRAN (FNA)- Sergei Skripal spent most of his days watching Russian television and adopting “the Kremlin line in many matters even while sitting in his MI6-purchased house”, a BBC journalist revealed in a book about the former Russian intelligence officer.

Skripal initially refused to believe that the Russian government might want to kill him, BBC journalist Mike Urban writes in his book, “The Skripal Files”, slated to come out later this week, Sputnik reported.

In the book, Skripal is described as an “unashamed Russian nationalist” who faced some “difficult psychological adjustments” after he woke from a coma following the alleged nerve agent attack in March, being reluctant to recognize that he could have been the target of a Kremlin “murder plot”.

According to Urban, who met Skripal several times in his MI6-bought house in Salisbury in 2017, the ex-Russian spy asked not to be quoted directly, saying he was “afraid of Putin”.

Even though he didn’t believe he faced any personal danger, Skripal still avoided making public statements so that his daughter Yulia and his son Alexander could feel free to come and visit him from Russia.

The book describes Skripal as a man who spent most of his day watching Russian television and adopting “the Kremlin line in many matters even while sitting in his MI6-purchased house”.

Skripal was convicted in Russia in 2006 for passing sensitive information to the UK’s MI6. In 2010, he was allowed to move to the United Kingdom as part of a spy swap and has lived there ever since.

He reportedly traveled to the US in 2011, the Czech Republic in 2012 and to Estonia. According to the book, last summer, Skripal spent a week in Switzerland briefing the Alpine republic’s intelligence service.

All this still fails to explain why Moscow would try to kill him, though.

In early March, Skripal, 66, and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious in the market town of Salisbury, around 100 miles Southwest of London, as a result of an alleged nerve agent attack.

London accused Moscow of having orchestrated the attack with what UK experts claim was the A234 nerve agent, which Moscow firmly denies.

Former Russian Spy Sergei Skripal Passed Secrets to UK's MI-6 Through Books Using Invisible Ink
TEHRAN (FNA)- Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal, who is believed to have been poisoned in the UK town of Salisbury in March, twice passed secrets to the UK Secret Intelligence Service MI-6 through books using invisible ink, Daily Mail reported, citing an extract from the upcoming book, The Skripal Files.

According to the book's author, BBC journalist Mark Urban, the book is based on his hours-long interviews with Skripal recorded last year, well before the Salisbury incident.

The journalist claimed that he had been initially planning to write a book about spying in the post-Cold War period but the incident in Salisbury made him publish a separate piece on Skripal. The extract from the book, published in Daily Mail, is accompanied by Skripal’s multiple family photos.

The book claims that a MI6 agent, referred to as Richard Bagnall, met with Skripal in Madrid in the 1990-s and, after a while, offered him to work for the UK intelligence. Skripal allegedly received a few thousand dollars for each meeting.

When Skripal’s assignment in the Russian Embassy in Spain came to an end, the two allegedly had to find another way to exchange information.

Since that, the journalist claims, Skripal twice transferred information in invisible ink. The first one was a Russian novel purportedly handed by Skripal’s wife Liudmila to Bagnall as a "gift" in 1997, while she was on holiday with daughter Yulia in Spain’s Alicante. The woman was unaware of the contents of the book, Skripal allegedly told the interviewer.

Next year, information was transferred by the same way by Liudmila during their holiday to another Spanish resort of Malaga.

Skripal was convicted in Russia in 2006 for passing sensitive information to UK’s MI6. In 2010, he was allowed to move to the United Kingdom as part of a spy swap and has lived there for eight years.

In early March, Skripal and his daughter Yulia were said to have been poisoned in Salisbury. The United Kingdom accuses Moscow of having orchestrated the attack with what the UK experts claim was the A234 nerve agent, which Moscow firmly refutes.

Syria spat over? US starts training Turkish troops for joint patrols in Manbij

Syria spat over? US starts training Turkish troops for joint patrols in Manbij
American instructors have begun training Turkish soldiers for joint patrols around northern Syrian town of Manbij, James Mattis revealed. It comes after months of bickering between the NATO allies over their role in Syria.

The US Defense Secretary told reporters on Tuesday that the Pentagon has just begun initial instruction for Turkey's troops that will conduct patrols in and around Manbij. “The training now is under way and we’ll just have to see how that goes,” James Mattis told reporters en route to Paris.

“We have every reason to believe the joint patrols will be coming on time,” Mattis added, as quoted by AP. The training, which will be done on Turkish soil, had been delayed while equipment was brought in and the two countries worked out the instruction.
Continuing, Mattis praised the Turkish military who had been “very helpful, very professional on setting the rules of engagement and the training up.”

Both US and Turkey have previously been at odds over Manbij, where the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia are based since 2016. The Kurdish armed group, which is viewed as a terrorist organization in Turkey is heavily relying on US military logistics, intelligence and training.

Earlier this year, Turkey had even threatened to knock the Kurds out of Manbij despite the presence of American troops there. Ankara consistently demanded that the US pull out troops from Manbij and halt military supplies to the Kurds. This Monday, Turkish President added fuel to the US-Turkey friction, accusing Washington of “blackmailing” the world and ignoring sensitivity of the Kurdish question.

Following months of political spat over the Syrian town, the two NATO allies came out with a “roadmap” which included conducting separate patrols along the line dividing the Turkish-controlled areas from Manbij itself.

At the time, Pentagon officials signaled that joint patrols of the northern Syrian town might also become reality. “The Manbij Roadmap does call for joint patrols, and we are working toward that end, but there is necessary training to be done first to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the joint activity,” a CENTCOM official told in late July to Army Times.

Damascus has long objected to the presence of US and Turkish troops which deployed without any authorization from Syrian government. Syria’s President Bashar Assad, who once famously called the US troops “invaders,” told RT in the latest interview that “the Americans should leave somehow.”

He noted that without foreign funding the armed opposition could be subdued “within a year.” Russia, in turn, had also repeatedly stated that it considers the US military outposts in Syria to be unlawful, since they were not authorized by the Syrian government.

Commander Warns Supporters of Terrorists to Take Lesson from IRGC's Monday Missile Strikes
TEHRAN (FNA)- Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh confirmed the Monday missile and drone strikes on the positions of terrorists in revenge for the September 22 attacks in Southwestern Iran, warning supporters of the terrorist groups to take a lesson from today's attack.

"We used both missiles and drones in these operations so that the enemies take a lesson and stop supporting the terrorist groups. They should fear these conditions," General Hajizadeh said on Monday.

He underlined Iran's continued fight against terrorists until their complete annihilation, and said they will receive blows much stronger than the attacks they launched against the country.

"The terrorists (in Ahwaz attack) used bullets and we gave them a response with missiles," General Hajizadeh said.

He described security of the Iranian nation as IRGC's redline, and said, "We took a hard revenge from the terrorist group which is supported by the US and the regional Arab states."

Yet, senior military commanders have warned that this has been phase one of Iran's response, implying that more actions are in the offing.

Former commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Mohsen Rezayee said that the IRGC's Monday missile strikes on the command center of the terrorists who carried out the September 22 attacks in Southwestern Iran was just a flick, warning that a more powerful revenge would pursue.

"The IRGC's missile strikes against the terrorists who conducted the Ahwaz attack was a flick to these criminals. The major punishment is on the way," Rezayee, who is the secretary of Iran's Expediency Council (EC), wrote on his twitter page on Monday.

The IRGC fired 6 ballistic ground-to-ground missiles and launched drone attacks on terrorists' positions in Eastern Euphrates region in Eastern Syria in revenge for the September 22 Takfiri terrorist attacks in Ahwaz city which killed dozens of Iranian people.

During the operations codenamed Zarbat-e Moharram (Blow of Moharram) carried out at 2:00 AM (local time) on Monday the headquarters of Takfiri terrorists near Albu Kamal region in Eastern Euphrates was attacked from Kermanshah province in Western Iran, 570km away from the targets.

The missiles were of Zolfaqar and Qiam classes with ranges of respectively 750km and 800km and precision-striking capability. At least one of the missiles bore slogans 'Death to America', 'Death to Israel', 'Death to Al Saud' and a Quranic verse meaning 'fight against the friends of Satan'. They travelled over the Iraqi airspace and hit Eastern Euphrates region in Syria.

Also, a few minutes after the missile strikes, 7 IRGC drones targeted the terrorists' positions in the region.

According to reports, heavy damage has been inflicted on the terrorists' infrastructures and positions.

26 people were killed and 69 others were wounded in an attack by al-Ahwaziya terrorist group during the nationwide military parades in the Southwestern city of Ahwaz on September 22.

The terrorists attacked the bystanders watching the annual Armed Forces' parades, marking the start of the Sacred Defense Week, commemorating Iranians' sacrifices during the 8 years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in 1980s, in disguise of the IRGC and Basij (volunteer) forces, killing and wounding several people, including innocent women and children.

None of the officials participating in the military parades in Ahwaz city in Khuzestan province was injured in the attack.

The number of the terrorists who carried out the attack in Ahwaz had on September 22 been put at 4 by Spokesman of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier-General Abolfazl Shekarchi. The general had explained that three of them were killed and the last one was captured by security forces.

He told FNA that none of the terrorists could escape, noting that other reports about the details of the attack are not confirmed.

Later the intelligence ministry put the number of terrorists at five, naming them as Ayad Mansouri, Foad Mansouri, Ahmad Mansouri, Javad Sari and Hassan Darvishi who were killed on the scene of the clashes with the Iranian security forces after riddling people with bullets.

Meantime, Head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Public Relations Department and IRGC Spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said that the terrorists who attacked people during the Armed Forces' parades in Ahwaz were affiliated to al-Ahwaziya stream which is nourished by Saudi Arabia.

He added that the terrorists aimed to overshadow the magnificence of the Iranian Armed Forces' parades.

General Sharif said that people were also invited to watch the parades and the terrorists both fired at people and the Armed Forces.

He said that such attacks were precedent and al-Ahwaziya terrorist group had earlier fired at the convoys of people who visited the Southern cities of Iran which resisted against Saddam's aggression during the 8-year Iraqi-imposed war against Iran in 1980s.

Iran Uses Drone in Cross-Border Attack on Terrorists in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has used the home-made drone, Saeqeh (Thunderbolt), for pounding the command center of the terrorists in Eastern Syria in an attack that was done in revenge for the September 22 attack in Ahwaz city in Southwestern Iran.

The IRGC Aerospace Force used 7 drones as well as 6 precision-striking ballistic missiles to attack the terrorist targets in Albu Kamal region in Eastern Syria on Monday. At least one of the drones was of a Saeqeh model which is a pilotless plane from Simorgh (Phoenix) class and enjoys the capability to simultaneously strike at four targets with smart bombs that have pinpoint precision-striking capability in far distances.

Iran calls its own version of the US Sentinel spy drone RQ-170 as “Simorgh".

Iran has developed Simorgh into a class of drones with reconnaissance, surveillance, combat and bombing capabilities.

Simorgh drones are equipped with an autopilot capability that brings them back to their airbase if operators lose control or are disconnected from the pilotless aircraft.

Saeqeh was unveiled in October 2016 and the footages of the drone attack on the terrorists in Eastern Syria on Monday show that it fires bombs from inside a case mounted under the drone's body.

The manufacture of the Iranian drone based on the US RQ-170 spying drone, which was captured in 2011 by the IRGC Aerospace Force was a major blow to the US government, according to Pentagon officials.

The Iranian version of the RQ-170 drone was manufactured through reverse engineering of the US drone, which was tracked and hunted down in Iran late in 2011, and has been equipped by the IRGC with bombing capability.

Earlier on Monday, the IRGC fired 6 ballistic ground-to-ground missiles and launched drone attacks on terrorists' positions in Eastern Euphrates region in Eastern Syria in revenge for the September 22 Takfiri terrorist attacks in Ahwaz city which killed dozens of Iranian people.

At least one of the missiles bore slogans 'Death to America', 'Death to Israel', 'Death to Al Saud' and a Quranic verse meaning 'fight against the friends of Satan'. They travelled over the Iraqi airspace and hit Eastern Euphrates region in Syria.

Then a few minutes after the missile strikes, 7 IRGC drones targeted the terrorists' positions in the region again.

According to reports, heavy damage has been inflicted on the terrorists' infrastructures and positions.

‘Hillary said so’: Iran slams Saudi Arabia as top ‘terrorist donor,’ quotes Clinton to back claim
A fiery speech by an Iranian representative, responding to Saudi accusations at the UN General Assembly, blamed terrorist activity around the globe on Riyadh – and even quoted Hillary Clinton to back the claim.

Accusing Iran of supporting terrorism was a “strange and outlandish claim” by Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Jubeir, the Iranian representative said. He was addressing the United Nations in Arabic, explaining that he was doing so in order “to make sure that our position is rendered clear” to Riyadh.

“Everybody knows that Saudi Arabia supports terrorism in a very blatant and widespread manner,” the diplomat said. He then added, unexpectedly, that “in the framework of WikiLeaks in 2009, Hillary Clinton is said to have stated that Saudi Arabia is the greatest donor to terrorist groups around the world.”

WikiLeaks did publish a memo by Clinton – which she put together in 2009, while she was US secretary of state – that said that “donors in Saudi Arabia constitute the most significant source of funding to Sunni terrorist groups worldwide… Saudi Arabia remains a critical financial support base for Al-Qaida, the Taliban… and other terrorist groups.”

Tehran, meanwhile, accuses Riyadh of being responsible for terrorist attacks “in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe” as well as of backing Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and Al-Qaeda.

“It’s an open secret that the Yemen nation is suffering as a result of the direct machinations and maneuvers of Saudi Arabia,” the spokesman added.

He then showed the General Assembly photos of Yemeni children, who were killed in an airstrike on a school bus, which was carried out by the Saudi-led coalition in September.

“You say that you’re defending the Arab identity,” the Iranian representative said, addressing the Saudis. “Should Arab identity be used as a cause or pretext to carry out proxy wars… You’re not defending the Arab identity. You’re killing the Arab identity with your dollars. You have no pity for anyone in the Arab World. You have no pity for any Arab people, including those, who are supposedly you allies.”

He also rejected Riyadh’s claims that the Houthi rebels are attacking the Saudi territory with Iranian-made ballistic missiles. Delivering such hardware to Yemen would’ve been impossible due to the blockade of the country, the diplomat said.

“If these were ballistic missile… how come there were so few casualties on the civilian side? Have you seen what a ballistic missile is capable of doing?” he asked.

Saudi FM Jubeir took the floor at the UNGA earlier on Friday and leveled a host of accusations against Tehran, Riyadh’s rival for influence in the Middle East. He claimed that achieving stability in the region would be impossible without deterring Iran, accusing it of creating and supporting “terrorist armed militias,” assassinating diplomats, inciting sectarian violence, and meddling in the affairs of other nations.

Saudi Arabia “supports the new US strategy to counter Iran, including its seriousness to address the nuclear issue and ballistic missile program and support for terrorism,” Jubeir said.
