IRGC Launches Missile Strikes on Terrorists in Syria in Revenge for Ahwaz Attack
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) fired 6 ballistic ground-to-ground missiles and launched drone attacks on terrorists' positions in Eastern Euphrates region in Eastern Syria in revenge for the September 22 Takfiri terrorist attacks in Ahwaz city which killed dozens of Iranian people.

During the operations codenamed Zarbat-e Moharram (Blow of Moharram) carried out at 2:00 AM (local time) on Monday the headquarters of Takfiri terrorists near Albu Kamal region in Eastern Euphrates was attacked from Kermanshah province in Western Iran, 570km away from the targets.

The missiles were of Zolfaqar and Qiam classes with ranges of respectively 750km and 800km. At least one of the missiles bore slogans 'Death to America', 'Death to Israel', 'Death to Al Saud' and a Quranic verse meaning 'fight against the friends of Satan'. They travelled over the Iraqi airspace and hit Eastern Euphrates region in Syria.

Also, a few minutes after the missile strikes, 7 IRGC drones targeted the terrorists' positions in the region.

According to reports, heavy damage has been inflicted on the terrorists' infrastructures and positions.

Meantime, Head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Public Relations Department and IRGC Spokesman General Ramezan Sharif said that the terrorists who attacked people during the Armed Forces' parades in Ahwaz were affiliated to al-Ahwaziya stream which is nourished by Saudi Arabia.

The IRGC had also in June 2017 launched heavy missile strikes against the ISIL terrorists in Syria in retaliation for two terrorist attacks in Tehran which killed and wounded tens of people.

A senior ISIL commander along with at least 360 other terrorists were killed in the IRGC's missile attacks on their bases in Deir Ezzur.

Sa'ad al-Husseini, nom de guerre Abu Sa'ad, a senior Saudi commander of ISIL was killed in the airstrikes.

Also, reports confirmed at the time that the missile attacks have inflicted heavy damage on ISIL and killed at least 360 terrorists.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps launched 6 missile strikes at ISIL centers in Syria's Deir Ezzur in retaliation for the June 7, 2017, twin terrorist attacks in Tehran, the IRGC said in a statement, adding that the mid-range missiles were fired from bases in Western Iran.

"The Takfiri terrorists' command center, concentration points and logistical centers used for assembling cars for suicide attacks in Deir Ezzur region in Eastern Syria came under attack by the IRGC moments ago in a move to punish the terrorists for the twin attacks on the Iranian parliament and the holy shrine of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, on June 7," the statement issued by the IRGC Public Relations Office said.

"A number of mid-range ground-to-ground missiles fired from the IRGC Aerospace Force bases in Kermanshah and Kurdistan provinces targeted the Takfiri terrorists in this operation and struck them with lethal and crushing blows," the statement said.

Iran fires ballistic missiles at Syria militants over attack
The Guard, a paramilitary group that answers directly to the supreme leader, said it followed the missiles with bombing runs by seven remotely piloted drones, a first for Iran. State TV aired footage of a drone dropping what appeared to be an unguided munition.

Boukamal is held by Syrian government forces, but IS still maintains a presence in the area, despite being driven from virtually all the territory it once held in Syria and Iraq.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told The Associated Press that the Iranian missiles hit the IS-held town of Hajin, just north of Boukamal.

Strong explosions shook the area early Monday, reverberating east of the Euphrates River, he said. U.S.-allied Kurdish fighters have been battling IS in and around Hajin for weeks.

The U.S. military’s Central Command acknowledged that Iranian forces conducted “no-notice strikes” in the area.

“The coalition is still assessing if any damage occurred, and no coalition forces were in danger,” U.S. Army Col. Sean Ryan said.

IS militants did not immediately acknowledge the attack.

The missile launch further adds to confusion over who carried out the assault on a military parade, which killed at least 24 people and wounded over 60.

Iran initially blamed Arab separatists for the attack in which gunmen disguised as soldiers opened fire on the crowd and officials watching the parade from a viewing platform. The Arab separatists, who have long complained of discrimination in Persian-majority Iran, claimed the attack and provided accurate details about one of the attackers.

The Islamic State group also claimed responsibility for the Ahvaz assault, but initially made factually incorrect claims about it. Later, IS released footage of several men that Iran ultimately identified as attackers, though the men in the footage are not known to have pledged allegiance to the extremist group.

In announcing the launch, Iranian state media said the missiles targeted both “takfiri” militants − a term it often applies to the Islamic State group − and Ahvazi separatists. The separatists have not been known to work with IS in the past.

Mohsen Rezaei, who formerly led the Guard, praised the missile strike on Twitter, adding that the “main punishment is on the way,” suggesting more attacks could be imminent.

One missile shown on Iranian state television bore the slogans “Death to America, Death to Israel, Death to Al Saud.”

The semi-official Fars news agency, believed to be close to the Guard, identified the six missiles used as Zolfaghar and Qiam variants, which have ranges of 750 kilometers (465 miles) and 800 kilometers (500 miles) respectively. Those missiles can reach Emirati and Saudi targets, as well as U.S. bases.

Regional tensions have been mounting since President Donald Trump pulled America out of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers in May. The United Nations says Iran still honors the terms of the accord, in which it limited its enrichment of uranium in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Iran says it launched missiles into Syria targeting Ahvaz attack 'ringleaders'
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has hit the ringleaders responsible for a terrorist attack on a military parade in Ahvaz on September 22, which killed 30 people and injured over 60.

In a statement published by its own outlet Sepah, the IRGC said its Aerospace Division targeted the "headquarters of the terrorists" east of the Euphrates in Syria. The statement was accompanied by photos of surface-to-surface missiles being launched. It claims that "a large number" of the terrorists were hit.

Before the IRGC announced the attack, videos were posted on social media purporting to show the moment of the launch. Some users said there were a total of eight missiles fired, and that two of them crashed shortly after being fired.

Last month's attack on the military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz killed 30 people and injured around 70. Tehran is accusing the US and its allies in the Gulf of enabling the carnage.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the US a “sponsor” of the states that provided the terrorists with material and political support, and the IRGC vowed “a crushing and devastating” response.

Washington has denied claims that it was to blame for the tragedy, instead accusing the Iranian government of poor governance and inability to protect its citizens. Rouhani shot back by saying it was like blaming 9/11 victims.

In the wake of the bloodshed, both the Al-Ahvaziya terrorist group and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack. The IRGC said that the attack was perpetrated by “some elements of Al-Ahvaziya group,” allegedly backed by Saudi Arabia. The terrorists reportedly said that the attack was to avenge the oppression of the local Arab population by the Iranian government.

The likely target of Iran’s Sunday attack was a pocket of IS militants holed up in the eastern part of the Euphrates River Valley.

IRGC statement;
6 missiles, 7 combat drones launched at Ahvaz attack ringleaders’ HQ
TEHRAN, Oct. 01 (MNA) – The Revolutionary Guards said in a statement that six missiles and seven unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV) have hit the headquarters of ringleaders behind Ahvaz terrorist attack in Syria’s eastern Euphrates early Monday.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has disclosed further details about the early morning missile and drone strikes on terrorists’ HQ in Syria’s eastern Euphrates, in response to the Ahvaz terrorist attack which killed 25 people and injured 69 others, including a four-year-old child and a disabled war veteran.

According to the statement, six medium-range ballistic missiles of Qiam and Zolfaghar class were launched from IRGC air force missile bases in western Iran at 2:00 AM on Monday, hitting the terrorists’ headquarters from a 570km distance.

The missile strikes were followed by seven combat drones bombing the positions of the terrorists affiliated to the global Arrogance.

The operation was codenamed 'Zarbat-e Muharram' (Muharram Strike).

The statement notes some received accurate reports indicating that a number of ringleaders and elements behind the recent terrorist attack in Ahvaz have been killed or injured in the airstrikes, along with their logistics centers and ammunition storage destroyed.

According to the statement, IRGC located the terrorists’ position in east of Syria after gathering evidence and intelligence on the recent terrorist attack in Ahvaz.

The statement linked the perpetrators of Ahvaz attack to US’ state terrorism in line with Israeli regime’s interests and reactionary states in the region.

The security of the Iranian nation is the red line for the armed forces, the IRGC statement concluded.

Syria a victim of wars fought in the name of oil – Austrian Foreign Minister
Oil is the real reason behind all conflicts in the Middle East while Syria is just the latest victim of this struggle, Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl told the UN General Assembly in a speech she started in Arabic.

The very existence of the modern Middle Eastern states have been “shaped by oil business,” Kneissl told the UNGA. A Middle East expert herself went on to explain that the borders of the states that were established following the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire were “based on pipelines.”

All the wars the region witnessed over the recent decades are just a continuation of this fight for the control over the fossil fuels that still “dominate the energy mix” in the world, the foreign minister said, adding that Syria, which has been engulfed in a bloody seven-years conflict, is “a victim of instability created by all these wars.”

This was the first time an Austrian top official made such statements at the level of the UN General Assembly.

Kneissl also surprised the gathering in New York as she started her speech in Arabic – a move she explained by her respect to the people, who fight for their lives in a region ravaged by wars. She switched to French, Spanish and English as well in the course of her statement.

She also criticized the international community and the UN in particular for losing real effectiveness behind the “flurry of meetings, which some diplomats turned into a comfortable endless game full of litanies and mantras.”

“We settle for these hackneyed arguments when we discuss Syria and Yemen. We get carried away with such words as reconstruction and stabilization while populations – children – are just trying to survive,” Kneissl said. Following these words, the foreign minister announced that Austria would like to “contribute to financing” the mine clearing operations in Syria.

Vienna is also “ready to increase its humanitarian commitment” to help the Yemeni people, Kneissl said as she called the Yemeni crisis, which is often neglected by the western media and officials, “the greatest tragedy of our time.”

In her speech, Kneissl also condemned the use of chemical and biological weapons as well as called for nuclear disarmament and urged the international community to do more to fight for the rights of women.

The foreign minister also criticized the US for its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, even though she avoided calling Washington by name. While hailing the agreement itself as a “result of multilateral action” and a “subject to independent verification system” that should be preserved, she said that “one country’s” withdrawal from its “weakens the mutual trust” and disrupts measures aimed at “confidence building.”

Austrian FM supports return of Syrian refugees
BEIRUT (AP) − Austria’s foreign minister says the return of refugees, stabilization and reconstruction in Syria must not be rigidly tied to a political process.

Karin Kneissl says Monday during a visit to neighboring Lebanon that the world should seize on “a new dynamic” developing in Syria, which has been mired in civil war for more than seven years.

Kneissl says no Syrian refugee will be forced to return, but that Austria will help those willing to return like it did with Bosnian refugees after the end of the conflict there.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil says Lebanon, which hosts more than a million Syrian refugees, is working to ensure their “fast, secure, honorable and sustainable” return. He says “security now prevails” in most of Syria, making it possible for refugees to return.

65-year-old Swedish woman sentenced to prison for criticising Islam and migration
By Emma R. 29 September 2018

In March, the district court acquitted the woman who was prosecuted for hate speech comments made on Facebook. She had criticised Islam and wrote that “the IQ level in Sweden will fall as a result of immigration”.

Now, however, she is sentenced to prison by the supreme court. “If this continues, the intelligence in Sweden will be at goldfish level,” said one of her Facebook comments. “Refuse all that is to do with Islam” said another.

During the investigation, the woman, whose name is Christina, was subjected to six police interrogations and searches, something she described as a terrible experience.

The police demanded she hand over her keys, mobile phone and iPad. The fact that she needed to get in touch with health care for a doctor’s visit was not taken into account whatsoever.

In 2016, the woman was beaten unconscious and bloody by a gang of so-called “unaccompanied refugee children” herself. The assault affected her memory, among other things. However, no one was convicted of the assault.

She has suffered very badly and feels extremely violated by the extensive and intrusive treatment by the police. The preliminary investigation against her is 150 pages long.

The district court argued that the prosecutor failed to prove who actually sat behind the screen when the posts were written. The woman denied that it was her, and stated that her lodger could have used the computer and made the posts.

The supreme court makes a different assessment of the case. In their view, the investigation clearly shows that she used the account at the relevant time.

According to the sentence, she is guilty of “criminal contempt against people with Muslim beliefs”. The woman, who was not previously convicted, was sentenced to three months in prison for eight cases of hate speech.

“I’m terrified,” said a devastated Christina in an interview shortly after the verdict.

“I’m so scared, and there’s nothing I can do. Will I be in prison with criminals? I have rheumatoid arthritis and deep depression and I will lose my apartment”, she said crying.

Germany approves extradition of Iran diplomat over bomb 'plot' - AFP cites court
German court has greenlighted the extradition of Iranian diplomat over suspected bomb plot, according to AFP. The 46-year-old diplomat was arrested in July.

The diplomat, identified as Vienna-based Assadollah Assadi, is suspected of plotting an attack on Iranian opposition group near Paris, according to AP. He was detained in July near the German city of Aschaffenburg on a European arrest warrant.

Now, a superior regional court in a Bavarian town of Bamberg said in a statement that it had approved the extradition of Assadi. The man “cannot cite diplomatic immunity” while objecting to the extradition because he because detained outside his host state Austria.

Also, Assadi was not traveling “between his host country and the state that dispatched him,” the court has said.

Back in July, Assadi had allegedly contracted an Antwerp-based couple and gave them a device containing 500 grams of TATP, a homemade explosive produced from easily available components.

The couple in question, identified by the media as a 38-year-old man, Amir S., and a 33-year-old woman, Nasimeh N., were stopped in Belgium and authorities reported finding the explosives in their car. The pair were then charged with attempted terrorist murder and preparation of a terrorist act.

Soon after the news on Assadi broke, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif denounced the allegations as a foiled terrorist plot, calling them “a sinister false-flag ploy.” He said the timing of Assadi’s arrest was particularly notable.

“How convenient: Just as we embark on a presidential visit to Europe, an alleged Iranian operation and its ‘plotters’ arrested,” Zarif tweeted. He stated that Tehran “unequivocally condemns all violence and terror anywhere.”

Naval blockade would mean ‘war’: Moscow slams US idea of hampering Russian trade
Attempts to use the US Navy to block Russia’s trade would amount to a declaration of war, a high-ranking senator commented on the US internal secretary’s idea of impeding Russia’s energy trade through a blockade.

“A US blockade of Russia would be equal to a declaration of war under international law,” said the head of the Russian Senate’s Information Policy Committee, Aleksey Pushkov, commenting on a report that US Internal Secretary Ryan Zinke suggested the US could use the navy to block Russian energy from hitting Middle East markets.

Pushkov also called Zinke’s claim that trade expansion is the real reason behind Russia’s involvement in Syria “absolute nonsense.”

The very idea that Russia could potentially supply energy to the Middle East, which is literally “oozing with oil,” is absolutely detached from reality, Pushkov said. Indeed, Russia does not supply any energy to the region, which is itself a major oil exporter, and has never announced plans to do so.

The Russian senator added that Zinke’s statement is “on par” with Sarah Palin’s claim that she was qualified to talk about Russia since “they’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia here from Alaska.” The former Alaska governor made the statement in an interview when she was the Republican vice-presidential candidate in the 2008 US election.

Attempts to exert pressure on Russia “are not going to end in anything good,” a member of the Russian Senate’s Defense and Security Committee, Franz Klintsevich, told journalists, adding that they would lead “to a major scandal” at the very least, and Washington “should clearly understand it.”

Russian MPs called Zinke’s words “disturbing.” “It is unsettling that our partners once again resort to threats, sanctions and unfriendly actions instead of discussing the pressing international issues,” a member of the State Duma International Affairs Committee, Anton Morozov, said. He also said that Russia “has something to respond with” but that such actions would only lead to an escalation of tensions, and called for dialog instead.

Washington seems to be bothered by Moscow’s international trade. The Trump administration has been seeking to replace Russia as Europe’s gas supplier by boosting exports of its liquefied natural gas, even though Russian gas is a cheaper option for Europe.

US officials, including President Donald Trump himself, have repeatedly pressed Germany to pull out of the “inappropriate” Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, which is set to double Russia’s natural gas transport capacity to 110 billion cubic meters. While Moscow has repeatedly stated that it is a purely economic project, Trump claims it will make Germany a “captive” of Russia.

The US is not focusing on the energy trade alone, as it has also threatened to impose sanctions on countries buying Russian arms in what could be another example of competition between the two nations. These efforts, however, seem to be in vain as well.

Most recently, India cleared the way for the purchase of Russian frigates and air defense systems. Turkey also defied threats from the US and said it does not need anyone’s permission to buy Russia’s S-400 missile systems. Even close US ally Saudi Arabia is now in talks with Russia to purchase the same defense systems. Moscow has repeatedly denounced US attempts to hamper its trade under various pretexts as unfair competition.

反米軍基地候補者が沖縄県知事選挙で勝利

RT2018/10/1
Anti-US base candidate wins Okinawa governor elections
A staunch opponent of the planned relocation of a US military base within Okinawa Island, where the issue sparked major public protests, has beaten a government-backed competitor in the local governor elections.

Denny Tamaki, a former opposition lawmaker and a son of the US marine, has got a win against Atsushi Sakima, the former mayor of a local city of Ginowan, who was backed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The vote was largely determined by the issue of the relocation of the US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, which has been a source of controversy for the locals over the years.

Tamaki vowed to continue fighting against relocation of the US base from the crowded town of Ginowan to the less populated coastal region of Nago, which would put corals and dugongs, the endangered marine mammals, at risk, according to environmental activists. He also pledged to follow the steps of the former Okinawa governor Takeshi Onaga, who had been an outspoken opponent of the relocation until his death in August that prompted early gubernatorial elections.

His major rival in the four-person race, Sakima, also supported the closure of the existing Futenma base but did not clarify his stance on the issue of relocation. Tamaki, meanwhile, vowed to continue fighting for the base to be relocated off the island.

Tamaki’s victory is considered to be a blow to Abe’s plans as the prime minister is pushing for the controversial base relocation plan despite vehement opposition from the locals, the Japanese media report. Okinawa, which amounts to less than one percent of the Japanese total land area, hosts about a half of the 50,000 American troops in Japan.

The US presence on the island has long been a source of discontent for the locals. Okinawans have raised concerns about machinery mishaps, noise, sexual assaults against Japanese women, and even some deadly incidents – all of which triggered massive protests. Onaga also repeatedly clashed with the government over the relocation issue in particular.

In 2015, he revoked an approval for the construction works issued by his predecessor. His decision was overruled by the central government, which went ahead with the project. In August, the local government retracted the permission again. Since then, the work has been suspended.

Following Onaga’s death in August, 70,000 people protested the Japanese government’s plan to relocate the US air base. Participants also held a one-minute silence to pay respect to the late governor.

Unknown Gunmen Steal Tahrir Al-Sham's Chemical Stockpile in Northwestern Syria

Unknown Gunmen Steal Tahrir Al-Sham's Chemical Stockpile in Northwestern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- A number of unidentified gunmen attacked a depot of Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) in Idlib province and stole their chemical gas cylinders, a Russian media outlet reported on Sunday.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted well-informed sources as reporting that a number of unknown assailants stormed an arms depot of Tahrir al-Sham and stole several sarin and chlorine gas cylinders after killing four guards.

It further said that Idlib has been witnessing a growing wave of tensions and infighting among rival terrorist groups in recent months.

The report further said that terrorists of Soqour al-Sham and other allies of Tahrir al-Sham have engaged in fresh tensions, adding that they were forced to relocate their military hardware from the town of Jajanaz East of Ma'arat al-Nu'aman to Jabal al-Zawiyeh in Southern Idlib.

Last week, the Arabic-language website of Russia's state news agency, Sputnik, quoted the source as reporting that Tahrir al-Sham dispatched six cargoes of Sarin and chlorine gas to the ISIL and Ansar al-Towhid terrorists that have recently been deployed in Northern Hama and Northeastern Lattakia.

It further said that most of the regions, where the ISIL deployed forces in Hama and Lattakia, were among regions where militants should be disarmed based on the Sochi agreement.

The Arabic Sputnik went on to say that the fate of three other chemical cargoes was unknown after a number of members of the pro-militant White Helmets Organization were killed and could not hand over the chemicals to the recipient group in an area between Northeastern Idlib and Aleppo province.

Other news sources recently said that ISIL's Asian members have merged in Tahrir al-Sham and deployed forces in regions that are under the control of al-Turkistani Islamic Party in western and Southwestern Idlib.

An Arab media outlet reported earlier this month that the pro-militant White Helmets Organization, directed by its foreign supporters, were planning to transfer poisonous materials to new locations in Hama province as terrorist groups were trying to stage a false-flag chemical attack.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen TV channel quoted a well-informed source in Jisr al-Shughour as disclosing that the White Helmets were planning to transfer a large volume of poisonous materials to Qala al-Maziq and Kafr Naboudeh in Northern Hama as requested by their foreign backers.

It went on to say that the terrorists and the White Helmets were planning to make a ten-minute video of a fake chemical attack to send two copies of the video to the United Nations, adding that a meeting which was to be held over the release of the video of the fake chemical attack has been postponed.

Israel: Russia's S-300 Delivery to Syria 'Serious Challenge'
TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Israeli official admitted that Russia's delivery of S-300 anti-aircraft missile defense systems to Damascus will pose a serious "challenge" to the regime, as tensions have been rising between Moscow and Tel Aviv following the downing of a Russian warplane in Syria this month.

The official, whose name was not released in the Sunday report by the Times of Israel, said Tel Aviv was working on "different ways" to deal with Russia's recent move.

“The S-300 is a complex challenge for ... Israel. We are dealing with the [decision] in different ways, not necessarily by preventing shipment [of the anti-aircraft systems],” he added.

The official stated that Israel enjoyed the US support and reserved the right to protect itself, without elaboration.

"[Russian President Vladimir] Putin made a move, but it's a big playing field and he understands that," the official said.

Moscow vowed to bolster Syria’s air defense capabilities by sending modern S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to the Arab country within two weeks after the recent accidental downing of a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft.

The aircraft was shot down by Syrian air defenses while they were responding to a wave of Israeli airstrikes.

Russia's decision to provide Syria with the S-300 system infuriated Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing it as “irresponsible”.

Netanyahu told Putin in a phone conversation that Israel "will continue to do what it has to do to defend itself".

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Friday Russia has already started delivering the S-300 system to Syria as part of efforts to ensure the safety of Russian forces in the Arab country.

Egypt: Russia’s S-300 Delivery to Syria Not for Outside Parties to Decide
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russia’s planned delivery of S-300 air defense systems to Syria is a matter for Damascus and Moscow to decide, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

“That is the matter for Russia and Syria to decide,” Shoukry, who held a bilateral meeting on Friday at UN Headquarters, told Sputnik.

When asked if these missile systems will be helpful, Shoukry said, “We view all de-escalation of military activity as a necessary prerequisite to return Syria to a stable and prosperous environment”.

What is of concern to Egypt, Shoukry added, is that conditions in Syria become stable and the UN-led political process gets underway. Egypt would like the process to move forward between all of the legitimate Syrian participants to bring security and protect the territorial integrity of Syria, he added.

“Situation with Ilyushin IL-20 made Russia take extra measures to protect Russian troops in Syria,” Peskov said.

“The Ilyushin IL-20 tragedy dictates the need to take extra energetic, effective measures to ensure security of Russian military personnel in Syria,” Peskov continued.

Peskov was asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the delivery of the S-300 to Syria; however, he said he was unsure at this time.

‘Let the Israelis try and we will defend ourselves’ – Syrian official
BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:30 A.M.) – In a new interview with China’s Xinxua News Agency, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad said that the new delivery of the S-300 air defense system to Syria will help deter Israeli attacks against his country.

“Israel which got used to carrying out many attacks under different pretexts would have to recalculate and reconsider before attacking again,” Mekdad told the Xinhua news agency on Tuesday.

When asked what would his government do if Israel tried to attack attack Syria again, Mikdad responded: ” Let the Israelis try and we will defend ourselves as we have done before.”

Recently, Russia decided to arm Syria with the S-300 air defense system after the downing of the IL-20 reconnaissance plane off the coast of Latakia on September 17th.

Israel blamed the Syrian military for the IL-20’s downing off the coast of Latakia; however, after a lengthy investigation, the Russian Federation found the Israeli Air Force responsible for the crash which killed 15 servicemen.

Israel should ‘reconsider’ attacking Syria after Damascus receives S-300s – Syrian deputy FM
Israel has been advised to think twice before attacking Syria again, now that Damascus is being equipped with S-300 long-range surface-to-air missile systems, the country’s deputy foreign minister has said.

Faisal Mekdad stated on Tuesday that the Russian-made S-300 systems will act as a persuasive deterrent to any further Israeli attacks against Syria – while emphasizing that the air-defense systems would be used only if Syria was attacked.

“Israel, which got used to carrying out many attacks under different pretexts, would have to recalculate and reconsider before attacking again,” Mekdad told Xinhua news agency. “Let the Israelis try [to attack] and we will defend ourselves as we have done before.”

The S-300s could be used to “close airspace where necessary,” explained Vladimir Ermakov, director of the Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control at the Russian Foreign Ministry, adding that the defensive weapons “will lead to the stabilization of the region.”

The Kremlin said that the decision to provide Syria with the air-defense systems will help to protect Russian aircraft from further friendly fire incidents and “is not directed against third nations.”

The delivery of the S-300 air defense system comes just days after the Russian Ministry of Defense found Israel responsible for the downing of the IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft.
