Russia turned tide of war when ISIS was about to ‘roll over Damascus’ – top Israeli commander
Russia’s military presence in Syria has effectively turned the tide of war back in 2015, the year Islamic State was about to “roll over Damascus,” the head of Israeli Air Force intelligence said in an interview.

The Aerial campaign Russia started against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in 2015 had “categorically” decided the fate of war in President Bashar Assad’s favor, Brig. Gen. Uri Oron, head of the Israeli Air Force Intelligence, told Haaretz newspaper. He acknowledged the Russians came at the time when Syrian defenses were on the brink of collapse.

“In the summer of 2015 everyone was sure that ISIS was about to roll over Damascus too,” Oron opined. The Russian deployment in Syria “was one of the strongest things to shape reality in the area in recent years,” along with the milestone nuclear deal the six major world powers signed with Iran the same year.

Dozens of Russian warplanes, including the state of the art fighter jets, tactical bombers and attack helicopters, are now stationed at Khmeimim airbase in Syria’s Latakia province. The fortified compound is protected by S-400 air defense systems.

In Oron’s view, the situation is changing rapidly on the ground, and Damascus secured huge strategic wins over the past months after it regained sovereignty over militants-held parts of Syria. “In south Syria, the story is over,” Oron said.

Asked if Russian presence constrain Israeli Air Force’s (IAF) operations, Oron said: “It challenges us. We have to be very precise.” Nevertheless, he stated that does not mean “the IAF only flies in Israeli skies.”

Russia and Israel established a military-to-military hotline to prevent dangerous encounters in Syrian airspace, yet an incident involving both sides still occured just recently.

A Russian Ilyushin Il-20 surveillance plane, with 15 crew on board, was shot down by a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile earlier in September. Syrian air defenses were trying to repel an Israeli attack in Latakia province, and the Russian military said Israel’s jets were using the Russian plane for “cover” during the strikes.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed “regret” over the loss of lives and promised to assist in investigating into the incident. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin referred to the downing of the plane as a tragedy, but noted the incident “looks like a chain of tragic circumstances, because the Israeli plane didn’t shoot down our jet.”

Israel rarely acknowledges carrying out raids in Syria, but recently the Israeli military revealed that it carried out at least 202 attacks on Iranian targets in the war-torn country. A total of 792 bombs and missiles were launched at Syria since 2017, the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) informed, saying the strikes were to hamper Iran’s influence in the region. Damascus has repeatedly branded such sorties "a violation" of its sovereignty.

The intelligence chief casually claimed Tehran is striving to dominate the country, despite Iran says its military advisers are present on Syrian soil upon an official request from the Syrian government.

Intense clashes breakout between Syrian Army and Turkish-backed forces in east Aleppo

Intense clashes breakout between Syrian Army and Turkish-backed forces in east Aleppo

BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:00 P.M.) – Intense clashes broke-out between the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Turkish-backed rebels in east Aleppo this evening after a relatively quiet few months.

According to a military source in Damascus, the intense clashes broke out after the Syrian Arab Army fired a couple of mortar shells towards the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) positions at Al-Bab in east Aleppo.

In response, the Turkish-backed rebels fired several missiles towards the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in the nearby town of Tadef, which is just south of Al-Bab.

A flurry of gunfire was then exchanged between the Syrian Arab Army and Turkish-backed rebels near the Al-Bab-Tadef axis, resulting in a fierce engagement this evening.

The clashes are still ongoing at this time; however, the total number of casualties for either party is still unknown.

This is the first major confrontation between the Syrian Arab Army and Turkish-backed rebels at the Al-Bab axis in nearly a year.

Russian Navy Preparing for Military Operation in Northwestern Syria If Ankara-Moscow Agreement Fails

Russian Navy Preparing for Military Operation in Northwestern Syria If Ankara-Moscow Agreement Fails
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian destroyers are preparing to launch massive attacks on terrorists' positions in Northwestern Syria as commanders of two main terrorist groups opposed a reconciliation agreement endorsed by Moscow and Ankara, a Russian media outlet reported on Saturday.

The Arabic-language website of RT quoted Vladimir Mokhin, a Russian analyst, as saying that Russian navy's current drills in Eastern Mediterranean Sea and its air drills in a large region between Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus that will last till September 26 have reinvigorated, speculations that the Russian destroyers might come into operation and launch missile attacks on terrorists' positions in Idlib if needed.

RT further said that Moscow and Ankara have been preparing for such a scenario, adding that as the Turkish Foreign Minister and Defense Minister has announced, Ankara forces will remain in Idlib in coordination with the Russian side, the Russian forces are also preparing to kick off military operation against terrorists if the agreement endorsed by Moscow and Ankara fails.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Thursday that the terrorist groups of Horas al-Din, Ansar al-Tohid, Ansar al-Din, Ansar Allah, Tajamo al-Forqan, Jund al-Aqsa and more groups affiliated to Tahrir al-Sham declared their opposition to the Turkish-Russian agreement on Idlib.

It further said that the opposing terrorist groups rejected to retreat from contact lines with the Syrian army from Jisr al-Shughour to Eastern Idlib and underlined that they will counter any side that would try to disarm them or force them to retreat.

In the meantime, militant-affiliated sources reported that senior commanders of Tahrir al-Sham, including Bu al-Yaqzan Mesri and Abu Mariyeh Qahtani, opposed the contents of Sochi agreement endorsed by Moscow and Ankara.

The sources further said that the Mufti (religious leader) of Tahrir al-Sham, Abu al-Fatah al-Farqani Mesri, has warned that if they retreat then they would be forced to hand over their arms, witness disunity and loss of power.

They went on to say that former Head of the Political Office of Tahrir al-Sham Zeid al-Atar has also said that the group's weapon is a sign of their strength and will guaranty their future objectives.

On Monday, after three-hour negotiations between Turkish President Rajab Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin , Russia and Turkey agreed to create by October 15 a demilitarized zone in Syria’s Idlib province along the contact line between the Syrian government forces and the armed opposition. According to Ankara’s proposal, the armed opposition’s tanks, multiple launch rocket systems and other heavy weaponry are to be fully withdrawn from the area by October 10. The demilitarized zone will be controlled by mobile patrol groups of the Turkish military and Russia’s military police.

Idlib is the only Syrian province still controlled by illegal armed groups. In 2017, a de-escalation zone was established in the region, where militants reluctant to lay down their arms can move together with their families. According to United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, Idlib currently hosts about 10,000 militants from the Jabhat al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda terror groups. In case Damascus succeeds in restoring control over Idlib, it will bring large-scale military activities in Syria to an end.

Google admits it lets hundreds of third party apps read your emails
Omnipresent tech giant Google told US senators that it lets third-party apps read data from Gmail accounts and share this information with marketers, even though Google itself allegedly stopped this practice last year.

In a letter sent to the lawmakers in July and made public on Thursday, Google said that developers may share your data with third parties for the purposes of ad-targeting, “so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data.”

In practice, this means that any app that shares your private data with advertisers must disclose this fact in their privacy policy. This is seen first in a pop-up box that includes a note that the app wants permission to “read, send, delete and manage your email.” However, information about the marketers this data is shared with can often be more difficult to find.

Google’s letter came in response to a request by Republican senators for information about the scope of the email content accessible to these third parties. In their letter to the company, the senators claim that one marketing company, Return Path Inc, read the private contents of 8,000 emails to train its AI algorithms.

Return Path told the Wall Street Journal at the time that, while it did not explicitly ask users whether it could read their emails, permission is given in their user agreements, which state that the company collects personal information including but “not limited to your name, email address, username and password.”

At least 379 apps available on the Apple and Android marketplaces can access users’ email data. In Google’s letter to Congress, the firm declined to say when, if ever, it has suspended an app for not complying with its rules.

Google itself has mined users’ emails since Gmail was launched in 2004, but announced last year that it would stop the practice, amid privacy concerns and a federal wiretapping lawsuit.

Now, privacy officials from Google, Apple and Amazon are preparing to travel to Capitol Hill next week, for a Commerce Committee hearing. There, the tech companies will be asked to “discuss possible approaches to safeguarding privacy more effectively.”

The hearing is another in a series of grillings faced by the tech industry since the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal revealed in March that Facebook allowed a third party to collect personal information on millions of users. Google CEO Larry Page was invited to a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on political bias, foreign interference and privacy on tech platforms earlier this month, but declined to show up, sending a written testimony instead.

Oops! It took Twitter 2 weeks to tell users of bug that exposes messages to unauthorized developers
A bug on Twitter has been sending users’ private direct messages to third-party developers, who are unauthorized to view them. The tech has giant informed affected clients of the problem, but almost two weeks after discovering it.

Members of the Twitteratti began receiving notifications from the social networking website on Friday, that their messages and protected tweets have been exposed for more than a year.

The problem, which was building since May 2017, was discovered on September 10 and fixed “within hours,” the company said. But for some reason it took Twitter almost two weeks to relay this information to its users.

The tech giant said that “the bug affected less than 1% of people on Twitter,” but it’s still a significant number, considering that the platform has around 335 million users.

The problem occurred in the Account Activity API (AAAPI), used by registered developers to build tools that help businesses to communicate with its customers on Twitter. “The bug may have caused some of these interactions to be unintentionally sent to another registered developer,” the company said.

“A complex series of technical circumstances had to occur at the same time for this bug to have resulted in account information definitively being shared with the wrong source,” it added.

Twitter said that it currently has no reasons to believe that any of the data sent to the wrong developers had been misused.

The tech giant said it has been working with its partners to make sure that they will “delete information they should not have.”

Those users that were affected by the bug will be contacted directly by Twitter staff, it said, adding that the investigation into the issue was ongoing.

It’s the second bug this year involving people’s data on Twitter. In May, many users were asked to change their passwords after it became clear that they were stored in unmasked form on the company’s internal log.
