Iraqi Source: Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi Died of Cancer
TEHRAN (FNA)- ISIL terrorist group's ringleader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has died after suffering an advanced type of cancer, an Iraqi source said, adding that his successor will be declared soon.

The Arabic-language Baghdad News quoted a high-ranking security source as saying on Wednesday that Baghdadi was suffering from lung cancer and couldn't make a move in the past few months.

He noted that the ISIL will possibly declare the name of its new chief soon in a bid to boost the morale of the terrorists and then will confirm his death.

The source said that the ISIL commanders are now in rivalry to take al-Baghdadi's place.

In recent months, contradictory reports have surfaced the media on the fate of the ISIL ringleader.

Iraqi intelligence sources had claimed in August that al-Baghdadi had lost his brain functioning, adding that rifts are widening more than ever over his successor.

The Arabic-language Sumeriyeh news quoted the Iraqi sources as reporting that al-Baghdadi has lost his brain functioning due to the injuries he sustained in an Iraqi air raid on ISIL commanders' meeting in Syria in June, adding that Baghdadi cannot move.

It further said that Baghdadi's health condition which means his actual death has intensified unprecedented differences and rows among ISIL commanders over appointing his successor.

The news website further said that some of the non-Iraqi commanders of ISIL have picked up Abu Othman Tunisi as Baghdadi's successor, while Iraqi commanders of the terrorist group have voiced strong opposition to his election.

A report said in May that al-Baghdadi - still the world's most wanted man, with a $25 million bounty on his head - was believed to be very much at large, quite possibly in a desert area of Syria.

Multiple officials said Baghdadi was likely sheltering in a remaining ISIL bastion in the Euphrates River Valley on the Syrian side of the border with Iraq, Fox News reported.

“The last information we have is he is in Al-Hajin in Syria, 18 miles from the border in Deir Ezzur province,” Abu Ali al-Basri, director-general of the intelligence and counter-terrorism office at the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, told Fox News.

Al-Basri added that fresh information about Baghdadi's whereabouts came as recently as the last couple of days, and was being used conduct a “multi-force raid” with Russian, Syrian and Iranian troops.

Iraqi Defense Ministry Spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool confirmed to Fox that al-Baghdadi was thought to be alive, and that he might be located in the border area East of the Euphrates River, possibly in the town of al-Shadaddah in al-Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria.

"It's not difficult for him to hide in the Syrian desert," the officer added.

Experts also stressed that Baghdadi might not have any contact with other ISIL members, and never remains in areas when the fighting or strikes become too intense.

The Iraqi air force stepped up its attacks against ISIL targets in Syria.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:50 P.M.) – Sometimes it pays to be late, which is especially the case for the Islamic State (ISIS) Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, as he allegedly escaped the Iranian attack on eastern Syria.

According to a report from Iraqi News, the Islamic State leader barely survived the Iranian attack this week after showing up late to the terrorist group’s meeting near the strategic city of Albukamal.
Find Out More >

Citing a Baghdad Today interview with Hashd Al-Sha’abi leader Jabar Al-Ma’amouri, the report claimed “the Iranian shelling against specific pockets of Islamic State, east of Euphrates in Syria, using missiles few days ago targeted an important meeting for the so-called Islamic State’s war council, to which Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was on way.”

The terrorist leader “was about to get killed in the shelling but he survived as he was late few minutes for the meeting.”

They would add that ‘Ali Al-Mashadani, Baghdadi’s deputy, was killed during the attack; he was reportedly in line to be his successor.

ロシア軍はIl20の撃墜事件を深刻に受け止めている プーチンはネタニヤフ電話会談の内容を補足発表

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, on September 17 at about 23:00 Moscow time (GMT + 3) contact was lost with the crew of a Russian Il-20 plane that was returning to the Hmeymim airbase above the Mediterranean Sea, 35 km off the Syrian coast. It specified that the Il-20 disappeared from the air traffic control radars during the attack of four Israeli F-16 planes on Syrian facilities in the Lattakia Governorate.

The Russian Defense Ministry later reported that the plane had been downed by the Syrian air defense systems. According to the defense ministry, the Israeli pilots used the IL-20 as a shield, putting it under the attack of the S-200 missile system. It was said that the Israeli flight control devices and the F-16 pilots "could not but see the Russian plane as it was coming in for a landing at an altitude of 5 km". That said, they intentionally carried out this provocation, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov added, noting that Russia regarded Israel’s actions as hostile.

Russian MoD warns Israel of ‘response’ after Il-20 aircraft crash
BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:30 P.M.) – Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said he warned his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman that “actions” such as the downing of Russian aircraft over Syria will not be left unanswered, speaking in Moscow on Tuesday.

“Today we informed our Israeli colleagues, in particular I, informed Israeli defence minister [Avigdor Lieberman] that we would not leave such actions without a response,” Shoigu said.

Earlier on Tuesday the Russian Defence Ministry stated that a Russian Il-20 jet was downed by the Syrian Air Defence Forces after an Israeli F-16 used it as cover during its missile attack on Syrian targets. According to the Russian Defence Ministry, four Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked Syrian targets near the Latakia city on Monday evening, after approaching them from the Mediterranean Sea.

In a statement, the Israeli Defence Forces denied responsibility for the downing of the plane: “Israel expresses sorrow for the death of the aircrew members of the Russian plane that was downed tonight due to Syrian anti-aircraft fire. Israel holds the Assad regime, whose military shot down the Russian plane, fully responsible for this incident.”

Russian President Stresses Israeli Air Forces’ Operations Violate Syria’s Sovereignty
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Israeli air forces’ operations in Syria are conducted in violation of that country’s sovereignty, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday during a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following Monday’s incident with a Russian plane that was downed in Syria, killing 15 servicemen.

"Putin pointed to the fact that such operation of the Israeli air forces are conducted in violation of Syria’s sovereignty. In this case, the Russian-Israeli agreements on incident prevention were not observed either. As a result, the Russian plane came under fire from Syrian air defense systems," the Kremlin press service noted, TASS reported.

According to the Kremlin press service, the Russian president "called on the Israeli side to avoid such situations".

The Israeli prime minister offered his condolences over the death of 15 Russian servicemen who were onboard the downed Ilyushin Il-20 plane.

"Benjamin Netanyahu promised to provide detailed information on the activities of the Israeli air forces over the Syrian territory on that day for the purposes of meticulous investigation of the tragedy, and the commander of the Israeli air force will bring it to Moscow shortly," the report said.

The conversation was initiated by the Israeli side.

The Russian defense ministry said earlier that a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 plane that was flying back to the airbase at Syria’s Hmeymim crashed over the Mediterranean Sea late on Monday. According to the defense ministry, four Israeli F-16 fighter jet were delivering airstrikes on Syrian targets in the Latakia governorate at the moment. The ministry said the Russian Il-20 was shot down by Syria’s air defense over the Mediterranean Sea because Israel’s F-16 fighter jets used it as a cover, since the Israeli command centers and the F-16s’ pilots could not but see the Russian plane, which was approaching the runway from an altitude of five kilometers. Fifteen Russian crew members died.

Will Russia-Israel ties suffer after downing of Il-20 military plane off Syrian coast?
Moscow and Tel Aviv have long enjoyed fairly good ties despite the turmoil in the Middle East but these relations are at risk as Russia blames Israel for the downing of its warplane off the Syrian coast and the death of its crew.

Although the plane was technically shot down by a Syrian missile, Russia made it clear who it blames for the tragedy, saying that Israeli pilots used the Russian Il-20 as cover.

The Middle East is historically a place of bitter rivalries. Tensions soared after the Arab Spring brought more havoc to an already-complex region, riddled with competing interests and the clashing ambitions of various actors, large and small. Nevertheless, Russia and Israel had always managed to maintain good relations.

This year alone President Vladimir Putin met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu three times, and on each occasion the media got few details from closed-door discussions. Through delicate, behind-the-scenes diplomacy Moscow maintained close, working relations with Israel. The fact that Israel is one of the closest allies of the US was never an issue for Moscow. Russia itself kept developing ties with Turkey and Iran, Israel’s arch-nemesis, while managing to address Israel’s concerns.

For Russia, Israel is not only an important, geopolitical partner with presumed nuclear capabilities, situated in the heart of the world’s most turbulent region, it’s also home to about 1.3 million people born in post-Soviet countries. This large diaspora plays a significant role for Russia when it tailors its approach to Tel Aviv.

Even the war in Syria, where Israel – in the hope of curbing Iranian influence – supported and armed controversial anti-government militants, didn’t result in a serious crisis in relations with Russia.

Over the course of the conflict, the IDF had conducted numerous airstrikes against targets in Syria and even launched missiles at Syrian jets. Each attack was strongly condemned by both Syria and Russia who had been pointing out that any military incursion into the country without government and UN approval is illegal. Moscow’s lack of a more robust reaction was part of a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with Israel, said Gevorg Mirzayan, an expert with the think-tank ‘Russian council for international affairs.’ ロシアとイスラエルの間の紳士協定

But the raid on Latakia and the collateral damage in the form of a downed Russian military plane can inflict grave damage on relations between Israel and Russia. Moscow may perceive it as a violation of this agreement or even a premeditated demonstration that Russia’s help to rebuild Syrian air defenses poses a threat to Russia itself, the expert told RT. “Israel takes a serious risk here, because it needs this gentlemen’s agreement more than we do, especially now that the war winds down.”

Israel stands firmly against any strengthening of Turkish and Iranian grips over the region, so its recent actions may be an attempt to remind everyone that the Syrian crisis has other stakeholders involved. Just the day before the tragic incident with the Russia plane, Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan reached a settlement on the situation around Idlib, the last militant stronghold beyond the control of the Syrian government.

Russia possesses plenty of direct and indirect ways to hurt Israeli interests, if it chooses to pursue such options, says Sergey Balmasov from the Institute of the Middle East. After the incident Moscow will “almost certainly” finalize the delivery of the S-300 anti-aircraft system, which it sold to the Syrian side earlier. It may go as far as to provide Russian troops to man those systems, the expert suggested: “Russia’s decisions will affect how comfortable the Israeli Air Force would be in Syrian airspace.”

Other options range from covertly supplying Russian arms to parties that Israel sees as its enemies, like Iran or Lebanon’s Hezbollah, threatening to shoot down any Israeli plane approaching Syrian airspace or even attacking military targets in Israel proper, the experts suggested. Of course, such an escalation would benefit neither Israel nor Russia, and the ball is now in Israel’s court to prevent it.

The two sides are probably discussing the incident unofficially at this stage. But how much of any explanations or apologies Israel may offer to Russia would go public is a different matter altogether. The fact that Russia went public with its accusations so quickly “shows how much Russia is outraged with the irresponsible actions” of the Israelis, told RT Nikolay Surkov from the Institute of World Economy and International Relations.

Mirzayan said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could stop the situation from festering by publicly acknowledging a mistake and offering compensation. If Israel “keeps silence, disclaims responsibility for this or blames the Syrians, the consequences may be grave for Israel,” he said. So far the IDF said the responsibility for the “regrettable” loss of the Il-20 is not theirs, but Syria’s, Iran’s and Hezbollah’s.

Russia ‘reserves right to response’ after saying Israel's actions led to downing of Il-20 by Syria
The Russian military has accused their Israeli counterparts of causing Syrian air defense forces to shoot down a Russian Il-20 plane. The air defenses were responding to an air raid by Israel on Latakia.

The Israeli Air Force launched their surprise night attack on Latakia in a way that put the Russian plane in harm’s way, the Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement. The ministry said Israel must have known that they were setting up the Russian plane to be hit by a Syrian counterattack, but failed to either change their approach to targets in Syria or give Moscow enough time to move the Il-20 to safety.

According to the Russian military, four Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked targets in Syria on Monday night, approaching from the Mediterranean Sea at a low altitude. The Il-20 was on patrol in the same area, and was shot down by a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile that was launched in response to the Israeli attack.

“We consider these provocative actions by Israel as hostile. Fifteen Russian military service members have died because of the irresponsible actions of the Israeli military. This is absolutely contrary to the spirit of the Russian-Israeli partnership,” the statement said. “We reserve the right for an adequate response.”

Map of the incident on September 17 in Syria provided by the Russian defense ministry.

The statement also updated the death toll arising from the incident. Earlier, the Russian military said there had been 14 crew members on board the missing Il-20. A search and rescue operation off the Syrian coast is underway.

Israel has yet to offer any public comment on the Monday night raid, which is in line with its usual policy. Israeli officials earlier acknowledged that the country’s air force has attacked hundreds of targets in Syria, which they linked to Iran, over recent years.

Russian Il-20 downed by Syrian missile after Israeli F-16s used it as cover during attack – MoD
The Russian military says an Israeli raid on Syria triggered a chain of events that led to its Il-20 plane being shot down by a Syrian S-200 surface-to-air missile. Moscow reserves the right to respond accordingly.

On Monday evening, four Israeli F-16 fighter jets attacked targets in Syria’s Latakia after approaching from the Mediterranean, a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. The Israeli warplanes approached at a low altitude and “created a dangerous situation for other aircraft and vessels in the region,” it said.

The military said that the French Navy’s frigate ‘Auvergne,’ as well as a Russian Il-20 plane were in the area during the Israeli operation.

“The Israeli pilots used the Russian plane as cover and set it up to be targeted by the Syrian air defense forces. As a consequence, the Il-20, which has radar cross-section much larger than the F-16, was shot down by an S-200 system missile,” the statement said.

The Russian ministry said the Israelis must have known that the Russian plane was present in the area, but this did not stop them from executing “the provocation.” Israel also failed to warn Russia about the planned operation in advance. The warning came just a minute before the attack started, which “did not leave time to move the Russian plane to a safe area,” the statement said.

The statement gives a larger death toll than earlier reports by the Russian military, which said there were 14 crew members on board the missing Il-20. It said a search and rescue operation for the shot-down plane is underway.

A later update said debris from the downed plane was found some 27km off the Latakia coast. The search party collected some body parts, personal possessions of the crew, and fragments of the plane.

Israel did not comment on the reports about the air raid in Syria, which is consistent with its usual policy on such matters. Israeli officials earlier acknowledged hundreds of airstrikes conducted in Syria over the past years. Israel claims its interventions are necessary to fight the Iranian presence in its neighboring country.

Russia to Israel: ‘You are to blame for downing of Il-20 and death of crew’
Russia formally complained to Israel about its air raid on Monday, which led to the downing of a Russian Il-20 plane off Syria coast. Russia laid the blame for the loss of live “squarely on the Israeli side”.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu spoke to his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman on the phone about the downing of the Russian Il-20 plane on Monday night. He relayed Moscow’s position on the incident, which blames the Israeli military for setting up the Russian plane to be shot down by Syrian air defenses responding to an Israeli air raid, an official statement from the Russian military said.

Shoigu reiterated that Israel failed to notify Russia of the impending attack in a way that would give the Russian military to move the Il-20 out of harm’s way. Instead the warning came one minute before the Israeli F-16 fighter jets launched their attack.

“The blame for the downing of the Russian plane and the deaths of its crew members lies squarely on the Israeli side,” the Russian minister said. “The actions of the Israeli military were not in keeping with the spirit of the Russian-Israeli partnership, so we reserve the right to respond.”

Earlier the Russian defense ministry said the Israeli jets used the bigger Russian plane as a cover during the attack on targets in Syria. The ministry said the Israelis must have known that they were putting the Russian plane at risk, but neither changed their battle plan nor gave a warning to the Russians in time to move the Il-20 to a safe area.

The Israeli government has not publicly commented on the incident so far.

SPY PLANE VANISHES Russian military plane with 14 on board ‘accidentally shot down’ in Latakia during Syria missile strike and disappears from radar

The Russian Defence Ministry reported losing contact with the Il-20 aircraft carrying 14 crew members at around 8pm last night

A RUSSIAN spy plane that disappeared from radar off the Syrian coast is believed to have been accidentally shot down during a missile strike.

A report given to Sputnik said: "On September 17, at about 11 p.m. Moscow time [20:00 GMT], the communication with the crew of the Russian Il-20 aircraft was lost when it was over the Mediterranean Sea, some 35 kilometres from the Syrian coast, on its way back to Hmeimim airbase."

US officials have reported the Syrian army shot down the Russian plane while trying to thwart an alleged Israeli airstrike.

Syrian state media said air defences intercepted and downed missiles targeting areas in the city of Latakia.

Military sources reported missiles came from the direction of the sea in an hour-long attack.

The official SANA news agency said the Technical Industry Institution in the state-controlled city had been targeted, adding it isn't known who fired the missiles.

Russian radars registered missiles launched from a French frigate and recorded four Israeli jets over Syria at the time of the attack, Russia Today reports.

The Israeli military refused to comment on claims they were behind the attack on Syria.

Personnel at Hmeimim airbase are now carrying out a search and rescue operation to locate the Russian aircraft.

This comes hours after Turkey and Russia agreed to establish a buffer zone in the Idlib province of Syria.

仏フリゲート艦 ロシア軍機を撃墜か

Russian military plane with 14 on board disappears during Israeli strikes on Latakia
A Russian military Il-20 aircraft with 14 service members on board went off the radars during an attack by four Israeli jets on Syria’s Latakia province, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with the aircraft on Monday evening, during the attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia, said the MOD. The plane was 35 kilometers off the coast of Syria when it vanished.

Russian radars also registered the launch of missiles from a French frigate in the Mediterranean on the evening of September 17.

Fourteen people were on board the plane at the time of the disappearance. A search and rescue mission is underway.

The Ilyushin 20 (IL-20) surveillance turboprop plane is an Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) platform, equipped with a wide range of antennas, infrared and optical sensors. The aircraft's SLAR (Side-Looking Airborne Radar) and the plane's satellite link allows the Russian military to monitor Syrian skies in real time.

An hour-long attack on Latakia began around 10 pm local time, and targeted a power station as well as two facilities belonging to the Syrian military. Syrian officials said the attack was “foreign” and came “from the sea,” but could not initially confirm rumors that Israel was behind it. Seven people were injured in the attack, according to Syrian officials.

While the Russian military said it recorded four F-16 Israeli jets over Syria at the time of the attack on Latakia, the IDF has refused to comment on the report.

Despite the fact that Israel rarely acknowledges striking specific targets inside Syria, earlier this month the IDF admitted to hitting at least 202 “Iranian targets” in the country. Overall, Israel has launched 792 bombs and missiles at Syria since 2017, arguing the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from setting up bases in the country in order to stage attacks against the Jewish state.

As Israel continues to claim the right to intrude into Syria, despite repeated condemnations from Damascus, France had said that it will join the US-led campaign to strike Syria again if there are reports of chemical weapons use.

Over the last few weeks, Moscow has been beating drums about the false-flag chemical attack that is being prepared by the notorious White Helmets and jihadists in Idlib province in order to frame government forces. Such a provocation, the Russian military argues, will be used to trigger a US-led attack against Damascus.

The attack on Latakia came just hours after Russia and Turkey negotiated a partial demilitarization of the Idlib province, which is the last remaining stronghold of anti-government militants, including the Al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (also known as the Jabhat Al-Nusra).

Russia detects missile launches from French frigate off Syria’s coast in Mediterranean

Russian airspace control systems have registered missile launches from a French frigate in the Mediterranean on Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

The French Navy’s newest frigate, FS Auvergne, fired rockets around 8pm GMT Monday, the Russian military said. “Airspace control has recorded rocket launches from the French frigate Auvergne,” the ministry’s statement read. The Auvergne is deployed in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Syria.

Auvergne is a 'European multi-purpose frigate' (FREMM) which entered the service of the French Navy in February this year. Prior to its official commissioning, the Aquitaine class warship witnessed deployment across the globe, including the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The launch was detected around the same time as air traffic controllers at the Khmeimim Air Base “lost contact” with a military Il-20 aircraft during an attack of Israeli F-16 fighters on Latakia. Fourteen people were on board the plane at the time of the disappearance. A search and rescue mission is underway.

The IDF has refused to comment on the report. Despite the fact that Israel rarely acknowledges striking specific targets inside Syria, earlier this month the IDF admitted to hitting at least 202 “Iranian targets” in the country.

As tensions over Idlib rise, Turkey and Russia on Monday agreed to establish a “demilitarized zone” between militants and government troops as part of an effort to clear the remaining jihadists from Syria.

Syrian port city Latakia 'attacked by missiles from sea' – local media
Syrian air defenses have engaged missiles targeting the area of Latakia, a city in the coastal province that is the home of Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base. Seven people were reportedly injured in the attack.

According to the state SANA news agency, the attack targeted the Technical Industries Agency headquarters in Latakia, owned by the Syrian military. Reports from the area refer to “powerful explosions” heard in the city. According to Syrian military sources, the strikes also targeted a power station and an aluminum factory.

The attack began around 10 pm local time. Photos posted on social media show tracers and missile plumes streaking across the night sky above Latakia, as well as several explosions.

Air defense activity was also reported in Homs and Tartous provinces, where Russia maintains a naval base.

Syrian media report that a “number of missiles” have been shot down. Multiple reports from the area speak of an attack by missiles launched from drones. It is unclear whether only the Syrian air defense batteries have been engaged, or if the Russian air defenses around Khmeimim are taking part as well.

Seven people were injured in the attacks, Ahmad Kazem of the Syrian Human Rights Network told RIA Novosti.

Multiple local reports have accused Israel of launching the strikes, but there has been no independent confirmation of that. Another possibility suggested by local media is that the drone attack came from the jihadists in Idlib. SANA reported the missiles targeting Latakia came “from the sea,” citing military sources.

The attack comes just hours after Russia and Turkey negotiated a partial demilitarization of the Idlib province, which is the last remaining stronghold of anti-government militants, including the Al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (also known as the Jabhat Al-Nusra).

Putin & Erdogan agree Idlib demilitarized zone to avert new Syria crisis

Putin & Erdogan agree Idlib demilitarized zone to avert new Syria crisis
Russia and Turkey have agreed a “demilitarized zone” between militants and government troops in Syria’s Idlib, President Vladimir Putin said after hours-long talks with Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan focused on solving the crisis.

“We’ve focused on the situation in the province of Idlib, considering presence of large militant groups and their infrastructure there,” Putin said at a press conference after the talks.

We’ve agreed to create a demilitarized zone between the government troops and militants before October 15. The zone will be 15-20km wide, with full withdrawal of hardline militants from there, including the Jabhat Al-Nusra.”

As part of solving the deadlock, all heavy weaponry, including tanks and artillery, will be withdrawn from the zone before October 10, Putin said. The zone will be patrolled by Turkish and Russian military units.

Before the end of the year, roads between Aleppo and Hama, and Aleppo and Latakia must be reopened for transit traffic, he said.

The agreement has received “general support” from the Syrian government, according to Putin.

Putin and Erdogan agree to establish demilitarized zone in Idlib
BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:20 P.M.) – Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to establish a demilitarized zone in Idlib after their short meeting in the Russian port-city of Sochi.

The Russian and Turkish leader agreed that they will have a demilitarized zone that separates the Syrian government forces and rebels inside of Idlib; however, they did not specify the exact location of this dmz.

This agreement comes just days after the Turkish military began moving their troops from the Hatay Province to Syria’s Idlib Governorate.

Both leaders did not mention the Hama, Latakia, and Aleppo governorates, where there is still a considerable number of jihadist rebels still active.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:45 P.M.) – Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu said on Monday evening that there will be no military operation inside the Idlib Governorate.

For weeks, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has been building up their troops around the Idlib Governorate in preparation for a large-scale operation.

However, it appears this offensive will now be limited to the areas around the Idlib Governorate and some towns inside of it.

Following his announcement on the military operation, Shoigu then touched on the recent agreement between the Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“The memorandum on the Idlib demilitarized zone will be agreed upon with the Syrian government in the next few hours,” Shoigu added.

‘Allez, allez, allez’: Luxembourg FM disrupts Salvini’s speech on migrants during EU meeting
Italian and Luxembourg ministers engaged in a bitter argument during an EU meeting over the union’s immigration policies. Italy’s Matteo Salvini referred to migrants as “slaves,” resulting in angry exchanges.

The verbal stand-off happened on Friday in Vienna. Salvini, the interior minister and leader of the anti-immigration Lega Nord, was describing how his country’s perception of undocumented immigrants from across the Mediterranean differs from that of Luxembourg.

“Perhaps in Luxembourg there are these needs [to support an ageing workforce with immigrants],” he said, according to footage of the exchange. “But in Italy, there is a need to help children have more children, not acquire slaves to replace the children we are not having.”

Salvini said he would respond to this opinion respectfully and reiterated the argument. Asselborn, who became quite agitated, exclaimed:

“In Luxembourg, sir, we have dozens of thousands of Italians! They came as migrants, they worked in Luxembourg, so you in Italy would have money for your children,” he said, adding “Merde alors (goddammit)!”

The verbal sparring between the two officials continued after the meeting, albeit indirectly. Asselborn denounced Salvini in an interview with Spiegel Online at the weekend, saying he was using “the methods and tone of the fascists from the 30s” against immigrants, accusing him of a calculated provocation during the meeting.

Salvini hit back on Sunday on social media.

“The Socialist minister of the fiscal paradise of Luxembourg calls me a ‘fascist’ today after comparing our Italian emigrant grandparents to today’s illegal migrants and after interrupting my speech,” he tweeted. “If he likes immigrants so much, he can have them all, we’ve already received too many in Italy.”

While the EU no longer receives as many people fleeing from Middle East and North Africa as it did at the peak of the 2015 crisis, the issue remains a thorny one. Italy, which is among the primary destinations for migrants, elected an unlikely coalition of left and right politicians united by an anti-immigration stance to lead it this year. This brought the country into the club of eastern European nations like Hungary and Poland, who have been resisting Brussels’ plan to redistribute asylum-seekers among EU members according to quotas.

‘Wash your mouth out’: Italy’s Salvini hits out at top EU official over ‘little Mussolinis’ remark
Italian Deputy PM Matteo Salvini fired back at top EU economic official Pierre Moscovici, telling him to “wash his mouth out” following Moscovici’s remark on the spread of “little Mussolinis” in Europe.
Moscovici, the European commissioner for economic and financial affairs, voiced his fear over the rise of right-wing forces in some countries, comparing the situation to the WWII era.
“Fortunately there is no sound of jackboots, there is no Hitler, (but maybe there are) small Mussolinis. That remains to be seen,” he told reporters in Paris on Thursday.

Italy blames France for Gaddafi’s downfall and migrant crisis
In Rome, the responsibility for the influx of migrants is laid on France, which persuaded NATO countries to get rid of Gaddafi. As a result, Libya is now torn apart by rival factions and an ongoing conflict between its two governments.

“It is clearly now undeniable that this country (Libya) finds itself in this situation because someone, in 2011, put their own interests ahead of those of the Libyan people and of Europe itself,” Italian Defense Minister Elisabetta Trenta wrote on Facebook. “France, from this point of view, is partly to blame,” she added.

Italian parliamentary speaker Roberto Fico was even more explicit, pointing to “a serious problem that has come from France.”

Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also chimed in, blaming former French President Nicolas Sarkozy for unleashing the war in Libya and the present government for adding fuel to the flames of the Libyan conflict.

Italians are filled with nostalgia each time they recall the time when Rome and Tripoli signed an agreement to allow Italian companies to extract oil in Libya.

The Gaddafi government was holding back the flow of migrants to Europe and the country’s GDP was the second biggest in Africa and the first among the Arabic-speaking states of the Maghreb.

In Rome, the emphasis is that the decision to overthrow Gaddafi was made without taking into account the views of Italy.

マレーシア航空MH17撃墜事件 ミサイル番号から1986年製でウクライナが保有

Serial numbers of missile that downed MH17 tells it was produced in 1986, owned by Ukraine - Russia

Russia: Serial Numbers of Missile That Downed MH17 Show It Was Produced in 1986, Owned by Ukraine
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian military said the serial numbers found on debris of the Buk missile which downed Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 over Eastern Ukraine show it was produced in 1986, adding that the projectile was owned by Ukraine.

There are two serial numbers found on fragments of the missile, which shot down the passenger airliner in June 2014 according to an international team of investigators led by the Netherlands. The numbers were marked on the engine and the nozzle of the missile, RT reported.

The Russian military on Monday said they had traced them to a missile which had the producer serial number 8868720.

Speaking to journalists, Gen. Nikolay Parshin showed a document trail of the Buk missile. According to the documents, some of which have been declassified for the presentation, it was produced at a military plant in Dolgoprudny in the Moscow region in 1986.

The missile was shipped from the plant on December 29, 1986 and delivered to military unit 20152 located in what is now Ukraine. It is now called 223rd anti-aircraft defense regiment of the Ukrainian armed forces, the report added.

The unit took part in Kiev's crackdown on rebels in Eastern Ukraine in June 2014, the general stressed.

The evidence disproves the accusations by Ukraine and some other parties, which claim that a missile fired by a launcher, secretly delivered from Russia, was responsible for the downing of MH17, the Ministry of Defense report said.

All the materials have been sent to the Dutch investigators, the Russian military added.

The Russian military also challenges video footage used by the UK-based group Bellingcat, which calls itself a citizen journalism organization, to back its allegations about the delivery of the Buk launcher from Russia. The Defense Ministry showed a video clip with some of the footage, highlighting inconsistencies, which it said proved that the footage had been manipulated to place images of the launcher into background which were not in the original.

The Bellingcat investigation was featured in the latest update by Dutch prosecutors involved in the MH17 investigation, prompting the Russian military to study it in detail, they stated. The Russian video showed an example of how an Abrams tank can be shown to be carried by a trailer in the streets of Ukraine in the same way.

The third part of the presentation was what the Russian officials called a record of intercepted communications of Ukrainian officials discussing, in 2016, the risk of flying through restricted airspace over Ukraine. Among a barrage of complaints one phrase says unless the restrictions are respected "we'll f***ing f**k up another Malaysian Boeing".

The Russian military say the complaints came from Col. Ruslan Grinchak, who serves in a brigade responsible for radar control of the Ukrainian airspace. His unit tracked the MH17 flight in 2014, so he may have information which is not publicly available about the disaster.

Gen. Igor Konashenkov, who hosted the briefing, said that Ukraine failed to provide radar data from its stations to the Dutch investigators. He also suggested that archive documents from the Ukrainian unit, which received the Buk missile back in 1986, would be of use to the probe, unless Kiev claims that they are no longer available. He stressed rules are in place which mean that such documents should still be stored in Ukraine.

The Russian military added that they had no evidence to disprove a scenario, involving the Ukrainian rebels capturing the missile from the Ukrainian army, but pointed out that Ukrainian officials publicly denied anything like this had ever happened.

Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down over Eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014, falling in the rebel-held part of the country. The crash claimed the lives of 283 passengers and 15 crew members, most of them Dutch nationals. Russia was blamed by Western media in the first days after the tragedy, even before any evidence had been collected on the ground.

The Joint Investigation Team, which is lead by the Netherlands, includes Ukraine, but not Russia. Moscow believes that the investigation is biased, failing to obtain all necessary evidence from Ukraine and relying on questionable sources while ignoring evidence provided by Russia, which doesn't fit the theory favored by Kiev and its foreign sponsors.
