Trump says anyone trading with Iran will not trade with US as sanctions come into force
US President Donald Trump has warned that any country trading with Iran will “not be doing business with the United States.” The threat comes as sanctions against the country came into effect at midnight.

The announcement came via the president’s usual medium of communication, Twitter, where Trump announced that the sanctions taking hold were “the most biting ever imposed.”

Trump also promised that Washington will “ratchet up” the economic pressure on the Islamic Republic in November, and said that other nations found to be trading with Iran would not find a trading partner in the United States.

“I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less!,” US president concluded.

Tuesday’s sanctions will see Iran prevented from using US currency as well as being barred from trading in cars and metals and minerals that include gold, steel, coal and aluminium, affecting Iran’s ability to buy US and European aircraft.

In November, Trump is expected to ratchet up the pressure on Iran by blocking Iranian oil exports, potentially halting some 2 million barrels a day, or 50 percent of Iran’s output, according to the BBC.

Allies China and Russia may intervene to help keep its industry afloat.

The International Monetary Fund said in March that Iran's net official reserves could decline this year to $97.8bn, which would finance about 13 months of imports. And analysts at BMI Research say Iran's economy could contract by 4.3 percent in 2019.

The re-imposed sanctions came into effect overnight, and follow Washington’s withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, colloquially known as the Iran nuclear deal.

Negotiated by Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama in 2015 and backed by the European Union, Russia, and China, the Iran deal sought to lift economic sanctions imposed on Tehran as part of an agreement to curb the nation's nuclear program.

Trump has previously blasted the accord as skewed in favor of Iran and has labelled the deal as “one of the worst I’ve ever seen.”

His position is a odds with the one held by the EU, who have stood by the deal saying that they would protect firms doing "legitimate business" in the face of US sanctions.

Trump’s latest remarks are likely to further escalate tensions with the bloc, which had seen the easing of sanctions as a way to keep Iran within the diplomatic fold.

Prior to the renewed sanctions taking effect, European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini said the EU is encouraging investors to maintain business ties with Iran to preserve the nuclear deal, despite the US withdrawal.

“We are doing our best to keep Iran in the deal, to keep Iran benefiting from the economic benefits that the agreement brings to the people of Iran, because we believe that this is (in) the security interests not only of our region but also of the world. If there is one piece of international agreements on nuclear non-proliferation that is delivering, it has to be maintained,” she said on Monday.

Trump warns EU over decision to protect Iran trade
US President Donald Trump has warned other countries against doing business with Tehran, saying he had imposed "the most biting" sanctions on the country.

"The Iran sanctions have officially been cast. These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level," Trump wrote in an early morning tweet Tuesday.

"Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States. I am asking for WORLD PEACE, nothing less," he added.

His warning was apparently addressed to the EU which put into force a law banning companies from complying with US sanctions or court rulings and enabling them to claim compensation for potential damage.

British Minister of State for the Middle East Alistair Burt said Europe can protect its companies from new US sanctions which were reinstated on Tuesday, as the EU activated a blocking statute to insulate firms against any fallout.

"If a company fears legal action taken against it and enforcement action taken against it by an entity in response to American sanctions then that company can be protected as far as EU legislation is concerned," Burt told BBC radio.

Under the blocking statute, EU businesses can sue the US administration in the national courts of member states.

European firms must seek a legal exemption for withdrawing from Iran due to US sanctions and those failing to do so could be penalized by their governments.

Firms, however, do not need to apply for EU authorization to leave Iran if their decision is based on business grounds, making the issue a tricky one.

"It is a commercial decision for companies whether they continue to work in Iran," Burt said.

Many European companies withdrew from Iran after Trump pulled the US out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran and set a grace period for firms to wind down their business in the country.

EU officials, however, were quoted on Monday as saying that a number of other countries had asked them for details on the blocking regulations as they also explore ways to bypass sanctions.

China, Russia and Turkey have already indicated that they would not comply with the unilateral US sanctions.

The foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain pledged in a joint statement on Monday to work on preserving financial flows and Iran’s oil and gas exports.

The German Economy Ministry said Berlin would continue to offer export and investment guarantees for firms doing business with Iran.

Senior US administration officials, however, warned that the risks were real for companies working in Iran, raising the stakes in an unprecedented standoff between traditional allies.

That means European firms have a serious balancing act for braving US penalties in order to do business with Iran.

Saudi Arabia Expels Canadian Ambassador, Freezes Trade in Human Rights Row

Saudi Arabia Expels Canadian Ambassador, Freezes Trade in Human Rights Row
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Saudi Arabian foreign ministry recalled its ambassador from Canada and given the Canadian ambassador 24 hours to leave the country. Riyadh is also freezing all new trade and investment deals with Ottawa.

The decision has been reported by Saudi Arabia's official Saudi Press Agency. It is understood to come in response to Canada's statement of concern over the arrests of human rights activists in Saudi Arabia, RT reported.

In a statement issued by the Saudi Arabian Foreign Ministry, Riyadh slams as “totally false” allegations by the Canadian authorities that recent arrests of several civil society activists were unwarranted.

It said the arrests were made by “the competent authorities” and the detainees were provided with all the rights guaranteed during investigative and trail stages.

The foreign ministry denounced Canada’s stance as “explicit interference in the internal affairs” of the kingdom that runs “contrary to the most basic international norms and charters that govern relations between countries”.

Besides putting on hold “all new trade and investment transactions with Canada”, the foreign ministry added that the ultra-conservative kingdom, that has drawn stark criticism from human righst group for its crackdown on dissent, “retains the right to take further action”.

On Friday, Canada called on Riyadh to “immediately release” civil and human rights activists recently arrested by the Saudi Arabian authorities, including Samar Badawi, an internationally recognized human rights defender. Badawi and another high-profile Saudi women's rights activist, Nassima al-Sadah, were arrested in the kingdom last week, sparking an international outcry.

In 2012, Badawi received an international Women of Courage award in a ceremony in Washington from former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and then First Lady Michelle Obama.

The UN has also voiced concern over the widening clampdown on opposition in Saudi Arabia, its human rights office (OHCHR) calling the spate of arrests that has been ongoing since spring “apparently arbitrary detentions”. Since May 15, at least 15 critics of the Saudi government have been detained, the office noted.

Venezuela's FM: Probe into Attack Against President Points to US, Colombia
TEHRAN (FNA)- Foreign Minister of Venezuela Jorge Arreaza said Sunday that the attack against President Nicolas Maduro a day earlier was a manifestation of frustration against the president and against those in positions of state.

Arreaza stated that the investigations so far point to an involvement by the United States and Colombia, teleSUR reported.

"There is no doubt about the origin of these attacks coming from a Miami-Bogota-Caracas axis," he added.

The statements were made during an encounter with the diplomatic corps accredited in the country to explain the assassination attempt against the president.

Arreaza thanked the solidarity shown by various governments and organizations in rejection of the attack against the president.

The attack against President Maduro took place at the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard, in which two drones carrying explosives were detonated near the presidential platform, injuring seven military personnel and halting Maduro mid-speech.

Hours earlier on Sunday Venezuela's interior minister Nestor Reverol said that six people had been arrested in the case of drones loaded with explosives that were used as part of an attack against President Maduro a day earlier while he was delivering a speech during a military event.

Arreaza echoed the details made by the interior minister about the attack which included two drones that carried a kilo of explosives c4 capable of effective damage within a radius of 50 meters. They were piloted aircraft remotely and designed for industrial work and can withstand heavy loads.

Colombia Slams Claims of Its Involvement in Venezuelan President’s Attempted Murder as Nonsense
TEHRAN (FNA)- Colombia’s government rejected the accusations that it had masterminded the attempted murder of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

"The Foreign Ministry on behalf of Colombia’s government flatly rejects the accusations against Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos made by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The accusations that the Colombian leader bears responsibility for the alleged attack on the Venezuelan president are absurd and unfounded," the foreign ministry tweeted, TASS reported.

The foreign ministry also notes that it has become a standard practice for the Venezuelan leader to accuse Colombia in any situation.

"We demand respect for President Juan Manuel Santos, the government and the Colombian people," it said.

The Venezuelan president’s attempted assassination was committed on Saturday with the use of several drones with explosives when Maduro was delivering his speech at the ceremony for the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard’s establishment. Seven law enforcement officers were wounded. Neither the state leader, not the top government officials were injured in the explosion.

The Venezuelan president stated that several participants of his attempted murder were detained and accused the Colombian leader of being behind the plot. Maduro also added that some those who planned to kill him live in the United States.

Israeli Footprints Seen in Assassination of Syrian Scientist

Israeli Footprints Seen in Assassination of Syrian Scientist
TEHRAN (FNA)- Israel has played a major role in the recent assassination of a prominent Syrian scientist in Hama province, Syria's media sources reported on Monday.

Aziz Asbar, head of the Scientific Research and Studies Center in Masyaf, also known by its French acronym ‘CERS’, was killed in a car bombing incident alongside his driver on Saturday night, Syria's Arabic-language al-Watan newspaper reported Saturday night.

The paper said that Israel’s secret service, the Mossad, was suspected of carrying out the attack. Israeli officials refused to comment about the accusations.

Meantime, the Arabic-language Ray al-Youm newspaper reported that certain groups affiliated to the US and Israel have played a role in the assassination of Asbar, a missile scientist, because the CERS center, headed by Asbar, is linked to the Syrian defense ministry, and Israeli warplanes have several times bombed the center.

Since the start of assassination operations during the Syria war, different terrorist groups, including the ISIL, al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) and other terrorists have used new communication and satellite systems which revealed the Mossad and CIA's active role in leading these operations.

The death of Asbar is reminiscent of other assassinations of high-profile individuals in Hamas and Hezbollah. For instance, Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyah was killed in a car bomb in 2008 in Damascus, and a Hamas official was targeted with a car bomb in Lebanon in January 2018.

Pro-Daesh Media Vows Unleashing Biological Warfare on West

Pro-Daesh Media Vows Unleashing Biological Warfare on West
TEHRAN (FNA)- Despite crushing defeats in Iraq and Syria, Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) propaganda mouthpiece urged lone-wolf attackers to unleash biological warfare on the West, including dissemination of viruses from feces and droppings of rats.

A propaganda video released by a pro-Daesh propaganda mouthpiece had threatened to use the “silent destructive weapon” on Western countries, according to Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) which had made a transcript of the recording, RT reported.

The terrorist outlet clearly stated that a carefully engineered lone-wolf biological attack would come in response to US-led bombings of Daesh-held cities of Mosul, Iraq and Raqqa, Syria. Their video also accused the “crusader alliance” of turning Muslim countries into a testing ground of “phosphorus bombs and toxin gas”.

“We will make you fear the air you breathe,” the run-up to the video cited by MEMRI read.

It shows the San Francisco skyline and a hooded figure in the foreground holding a device spraying green gas.

Though biological warfare agents are typically hard-to-obtain as their production requires advanced technologies, the propaganda video offered a more affordable option for aspiring Jihadists.

It advised to extract the most harmful viruses and infection bacteria and then release them “to renew the fatal nightmare in the land of the devil worshipers”.

Hantavirus which could cause potentially fatal diseases in humans is sometimes derived from the feces and droppings of rats, whilst the cholera virus “is extracted from the patient’s waste”.

Typhoid bacteria is found in human and animal wastes in general and is frequent in the dirty areas, the mouthpiece said.

The deadly substances could then be sprinkled on exposed fruit and public foods or be scattered in the air in crowded places.

Despite the Western-led coalition declared victory over Daesh in Iraq in 2017, the extremists are still afloat, the country’s government warned earlier this year. Daesh militants did not go away and they now continue menacing Iraqis with hit-and-run attacks and assassinations, Hisham al-Hashimi, government security adviser, told RT.

Iraqi troops are struggling to weed out the militants who are hiding in remote mountainous areas, but to little avail so far.

“The special forces don’t have enough resources to hunt the militants down,” al-Hashimi added.

Russian security officials, for their part, have also cautioned not to underestimate the threat of Daesh. Alexander Bortnikov, the FSB director, told Moscow Security Conference in April that Daesh and Al-Qaeda can merge into one terrorist network which could be able to set up cells around the world and even produce chemical weapons.

He stated that the grim statistics tells that half of the more than 1,600 terrorist attacks around the world annually are linked to Daesh. The attacks have resulted in more than 150,000 casualties since the rise of the terrorist group in 2014, and more than 33,000 people were killed or injured in just the past year.
