Lebanese MP: Saudi Crown Prince Urged Syrian President to Cut Ties with Iran, Hezbollah
TEHRAN (FNA)- A Lebanese lawmaker affiliated to Hezbollah stated that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman has recently offered Syrian President Bashar Assad huge sums of money for the reconstruction of his conflict-plagued country in case the latter severs relations with Iran and the Lebanese resistance movement.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Lebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network, Nawwaf Musawi said a Saudi delegate had conveyed the message to the Syrian president, notifying him that the Riyadh regime would have no problem with Assad staying in power only if the Damascus government opts to cut ties with Tehran and Hezbollah.

Musawi noted that Assad did not hesitate to roundly reject the offer, stressing that the Syrian president is at the center of the anti-Israel resistance front.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.

Syrian army troopers, backed by allied fighters from the popular defense groups, have recently made major territorial gains in battles against Daesh and other foreign-sponsored Takfiri terrorist groups. The major militant stronghold remains in the Northwestern province of Idlib, where government forces are preparing to launch a full-scale military operation. Militants are also in control of some areas of the Western-Central province of Hama, and are holding some desert regions near the border with Turkey.

Moreover, negotiations have been taking place between the political wing of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian government on ways to end violence in Syria.

Saudi Arabia May Execute First Female Activist
TEHRAN (FNA)- Saudi Arabia may for the first time execute a female human rights activist who was arrested some three years ago on charges of supporting anti-government protests and inciting people to disobey the regime.
Israa al-Ghomgham from the Qatif region in the kingdom’s oil-rich Eastern Province has been behind bars for 32 months, Middle East News reported.
She recently appeared in the Specialized Criminal Court (SCC) in the capital, Riyadh. The public prosecutor called for death penalty for six defendants, including Ghomgham and her husband Moussa al-Hashem, who were arrested in a house raid by Saudi regime forces in December 2015.
"The call of the public prosecution for a death sentence for the detainee is a dangerous indicator that the trial outcome will lead to a death penalty sentence being issued," Sputnik News quoted the European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) as saying.

ISIS & Al-Nusra terrorists are hiding in Syrian refugee camp within US-controlled zone – Moscow
Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists use civilians as human shields as they hide in a refugee camp in Syrian territory controlled by the US – and the Americans are well aware of it, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and the Al-Qaeda proxy group Jabhat al-Nusra found quiet shelter in one of the biggest camps, Rukban, near the Syria-Jordan border, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told reporters at her weekly news conference on Thursday. Neither Syrian authorities nor the UN have access to the site.

“ISIS militants, hundreds of them, and also al-Nusra militants in possession of heavy arms are hiding among the civilians, who are in fact being held hostage and used as human shields,” Zakharova said.

“We have actual information that confirms that this happens with the privity of the US military, who control the 55-kilometer zone around its illegal Al-Tanf base on the Syrian territory.”

The same refugee camp was listed in a recent UN Security Council’s Sanctions Monitoring Team report as one of the sources of IS reemergence. The same document reported that ISIS had been defeated in most of the Syrian Arab Republic during 2017, but “rallied in early 2018” due to “loss of momentum” by forces fighting in the east of Syria, where the US base is located.

Moscow and Damascus have repeatedly urged the US to cooperate over the Rukban camp, with Russia offering to help with safe transportation of the refugees back to their homes. Earlier in August, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy, the head of operations of the Russian General Staff, described Rukban as a place where “people are living in harsh conditions and where terrorists find shelter.”

Did Obama’s “rebels” in Syria kidnap children from Latakia and murder them in Ghouta chemical attack to justify US bombing of Syria?

When they saw television images of the children who’d died in Ghouta sarin attacks on 21 August 2013, families in Latakia countryside recognised a number of the children who’d been abducted two weeks earlier from Latakia by foreign-backed “rebels”.

I’ve searched through video’s and images of victims of Ghouta chemical attacks but there are so few close-up pictures of victims available which makes it difficult to compare features, especially young boys. Here are some images of children kidnapped from Latakia by rebels that I’ve matched with the Ghouta dead. I hope I’m wrong and that these children are alive and well somewhere – but WHERE are they and why are western governments silent about the two-hundred (mostly children) missing from Latakia?

White Helmets, Tahrir Al-Sham Plan to Stage Another False-Flag Chemical Attack in Northwestern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) and the pro-militant White Helmets Organization are planning to carry out a fake chemical attack in Lattakia to later accuse the Syrian Army of the incident ahead of the government forces' upcoming operation, media reports said.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted several local sources as reporting that the White Helmets have sent 8 truck vans carrying chemicals stored in a local Chlorine Recycling Company near the town of al-Tamah at the border with Turkey to Jisr al-Shughour in Northeastern Lattakia which is under the control of Tahrir al-Sham under tight security measures.

It went on to say that the Chemicals would go through Ariha town under tight security measures of Tahrir al-Sham. The White Helmets were also called for help by Tahrir al-Sham in several regions of Idlib concurrent with the arrival of chemicals in Jisr al-Shughour.

In a relevant development earlier this month, the White Helmets had sent chemicals for Turkistani Islamic Party in Jisr al-Shughour in Northeastern Idlib.

Irregular movements by the White Helmets have been recently spotted in a large triangular region from the Turkish borderline to Jisr al-Shughour and the borders with Lattakia in West, the media outlet reported, adding that Tahrir al-Sham and White Helmets are preparing to launch a fake chemical attack in Idlib to later accuse the Damascus forces.

Media sources reported earlier this month that the Turkish army sent several trucks carrying chlorine to the Ankara-backed terrorists' stronghold in Idlib, adding that a number of commanders of militant groups left the region.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik news agency quoted local sources in Idlib province as saying that a Turkish military convoy, consisting of tens of trucks, and accompanied by Tahrir al-Sham terrorists, entered Syria through Kafr Lousin passageway in Northern Idlib and were transferred to the region under the supervision of Turkey in Jisr al-Shughour in Western Idlib and Northwestern Hama.

They added that 8 trucks carrying plastic barrels containing fluid Chlorine were unloaded in one of the bases of Turkistani terrorist group in the village of Halouz in Western Jisr al-Shughour.

Also, 18 other trucks, carrying prefabricated residential boxes, cement walls and other technical equipment, communication systems and electronic sniper guns, were transferred to Jabal Ishtabraq region.

The sources also said that 3 trucks moved towards Turkey at night under heavy security measures of Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at, raising the speculations that they had transferred the foreign terrorist commanders of Tahrir al-Sham to Turkey.

Meantime, the Turkish forces stopped activities of al-Barqoum checkpoint which was the biggest Tahrir al-Sham checkpoint in Aleppo-Damascus highway.

MoD: Russia's Strikes in Syria Have Killed +86,000 Terrorists, Moscow Has Tested +230 Types of Weapons
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Defense Ministry published detailed information about the military operations in Syria on Wednesday, stating that Russia's strikes on terrorists in Syria have killed more than 86,000 militants and 830 gang leaders.

"A total of 830 gang leaders, more than 86,000 militants, including 4,500 immigrants from the Russian Federation and the CIS countries, were eliminated," according to a video posted on the defense ministry's YouTube channel, RIA Novosti reported.

The crisis in Syria started in 2011, when various opposition groups attempted to overthrow the Syrian President Bashar Assad during the Arab Spring riots. Russian military started the operation in the country in 2015 in order to stop the war and help the internationally recognized government to fight militant groups, including Daesh (ISIS or ISIL).

Russia has tested 231 types of the newest and modernized weapons during the operation in Syria, according to the defense ministry.

"Ships and submarines of the Russian Navy carried out 100 strikes with sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles on the terrorists' targets. Strategic long-range aviation of the Russian Aerospace Force have carried out 66 strikes with air-launched cruise missiles," the defense ministry stated, adding that 166 targets have been hit.

According to the report, up to 70 unmanned aerial vehicles, such as Forpost and Orlan-10, perform flights in the Syrian skies every day.

It confirmed that the vehicles had carried out more than 25,000 reconnaissance flights and detected some 47,500 enemy targets.

"As a result of the operation, the Syrian troops, supported by Russian forces, liberated from terrorists more than 1,400 settlements, over 96 percent of the territory is under the control of government troops and militia units," the defense ministry noted.

Over 63,000 Russian military personnel, including 434 generals and about 26,000 officers, gained combat experience in Syria, the defense ministry said, adding that 91 percent of Russian army aviation crews and 60 percent of strategic and long-range aviation crews gained combat experience.

Russian FM: All Foreign Forces Staying in Syria without Invitation Must Leave
TEHRAN (FNA)- All foreign forces staying in Syria without an invitation from Damascus must leave the country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday in comments on a statement by US National Security Adviser John Bolton.

"All foreign forces staying there without an invitation from the Syrian government must be eventually withdrawn," Lavrov told reporters, TASS reported.

Bolton, who will meet with Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev in Geneva has stated that he was ready to discuss with Moscow aspects of the Syrian settlement but on condition the Iranian forces would be sent back to Iran.

Syria Slams Western Statement on Use of Chemical Arms
TEHRAN (FNA)- Syria denounced a recent statement by the US, Britain and France on the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Damascus government, saying the trio is leading a campaign of misinformation against the Arab country in line with their support for terrorists.

An official source at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates told SANA news agency on Wednesday that the fresh Western threats against Damascus came amid the Syrian army’s territorial gains against foreign-backed terrorists.

Washington, London and Paris, in a statement on Monday, claimed that they “shared resolve to preventing the use of chemical weapons” by the government of Syrian President Basher al-Assad.

They also noted that their position on the Damascus’ “use of chemical weapons is unchanged. As we have demonstrated, we will respond appropriately to any further use of chemical weapons” by the Syrian government.

The statement was published on the fifth anniversary of the deadly chemical attack in the Damascus suburb of Ghouta in August 2013.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Syrian Foreign Ministry source stressed that the Western countries had once again resorted to “a campaign of threats, hypocrisy and misinformation against the Syrian Arab Republic as part of the continued declared support for the armed terrorist groups, particularly Jabhat al-Nusra and its affiliated groups”.

“Syria has repeatedly asserted that it considers the use of chemical weapons immoral and condemns its use anywhere, under any circumstance and against anyone. Syria reiterates that it has no chemical weapons,” he added.

Syria surrendered its entire chemical stockpile in 2013 to a mission led by the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the UN.

The source also stated that it is not Syria which uses chemical weapons, but rather the armed terrorist groups that enjoy direct support from Western and regional countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar.

Syria, the source noted, has recently “informed the relevant international bodies about preparations by armed terrorist organizations to use poison gas in several areas” in the country.

The statement of these countries is nothing more than a sign of support for “any chemical aggression that these terrorist organizations may undertake in the next few days to use this as a pretext for aggression against Syria, as it did in its brutal aggression on 14 April 2018”.

The Western statement seeks to “justify the use of chemical weapons by terrorist organizations, prolong the war against Syria and support the terrorist organizations”, the source pointed out.

On April 14, the US, Britain and France launched a coordinated missile attack against sites and research facilities near Damascus and Homs with the purported goal of paralyzing the Syrian government’s capability to produce chemicals. The strike came one week after an alleged gas attack on the Damascus suburb town of Douma.

Militants Declare Preparation for Offensive on Syrian Gov't Troops, Refuse to Hold Talks
TEHRAN (FNA)- Maj. Gen. Alexei Tsygankov, head of the Russian Center for Syrian Reconciliation, stated that the leadership of militant groups in Syria openly declares the preparation for an offensive against Syrian government forces and refuses to hold any sort of dialogue on political settlement.

"The command of 'National Liberation Army' 'National Front for the Liberation of Syria' and 'National Front for Liberation' openly declares preparations for an offensive against government forces and rejects any dialogue on political settlement of the conflict," Tsygankov said at a briefing, Sputnik reported.

Tsygankov reiterated again that the Russian Reconciliation Center calls on commanders of militant groups to abandon armed provocations and choose the path of a peaceful settlement in the areas under their control.

Alexei Tsygankov added that militants had detained more than 500 supporters of the dialogue with Damascus in Syria's Idlib de-escalation zone in the past two weeks, and that the fate of most of them was unknown.

"Arrests of supporters of political dialogue with Damascus among the local population and opposition commanders on the territory of the Idlib de-escalation zone continue. The number of citizens detained by militants from radical groups in the last two weeks has already exceeded 500. The detainees are being taken away to an unknown destination, the fate of most of them is unknown," Tsygankov stressed.

Two months before the 2013 Ghouta chemical attack an FSA general blackmails "the international community", saying that unless "rebels" are provided with weapons/ammo within one month, FSA will reveal all they know about the use of chemical weapons in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- A Syrian military intelligence officer has reportedly been assassinated in the West-Central Hama Province, the second such killing in two weeks blamed on Israel’s Mossad spy agency.
Reports said Ahmad Issa Habib, who was in charge of the Syrian army’s Palestine department, had been shot in the head in the village of Ba'arin, presstv reported.
There were contradictory reports on whether the unknown assailants had targeted the victim in his car or at his home.
Israel’s Army Radio quoted Syrian opposition sources as saying that Habib was “responsible for the struggle against Israel”.
Damascus is yet to comment on the assassination reports.
On April 4, Aziz Azbar, the head of the Syrian Scientific Research and Studies Center in the Hama city of Masyaf, was assassinated in a car bombing.
A senior official from a Middle Eastern intelligence agency told The New York Times that Mossad had a hand in the targeted killing.
The official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said his agency had been informed of the operation, and that Mossad had been tracking Azbar for a long time.
Some reports said the killing of the scientist was part of Israel’s campaign of aggression aimed at preventing Syria from rehabilitating its defense capabilities when the crisis in the Arab country comes to an end.
Israel frequently attacks military targets inside Syria in an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering defeats against Syrian government forces.
The regime has also been providing weapons to anti-Damascus militants as well as medical treatment to Takfiri elements wounded in Syria.

Russian FM: UN Secretly Prohibited by Sec. Gen. from Restoring Syrian Economy
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday that the UN Secretariat secretly banned the organization's divisions from taking part in restoring Syria's economy.
"It turned out that the political department of the UN Secretariat really published and disseminated throughout the UN system a secret directive in October last year prohibiting organizations participating in this system to take part in any projects to restore the Syrian economy. Only humanitarian assistance, nothing more," Lavrov said, Sputnik reported.
Lebanon supports Russia's initiative on Syrian refugees and hopes that it will be implemented, Lebanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil said as he met with Lavrov on Monday.
Lavrov noted in response that Russia aspires to help return Syrian refugees to their homes as soon as possible.
According to him, Russia "keeps in touch with the Syrian government" and with those countries that have hosted the refugees.
The US is trying to artificially slow down return of refugees to Syria by refusing to participate in restoration of Syrian infrastructure, Lavrov added.
"The United States is trying to artificially slow down the process of the refugees' return by refusing to participate in the restoration of infrastructure in Syria. A few days ago, Washington hosted a meeting between [UN Special Envoy for Syria] Staffan de Mistura and [US Secretary of State] Mike Pompeo, and the State Department used the phrase 'it is premature to even discuss the restoration of Syria' in the statement following their talks," Lavrov told a press conference after a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Gebran Bassil.
It comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin's detailed bilateral talks with Angela Merkel in Berlin on Saturday, where called to build up humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and to the countries where refugees are living at the moment.
Hours before the meeting, Putin called on European countries to rebuild the crisis-torn Syria to ensure that Syrian refugees are able to return to their homeland, warning that a renewed migration crisis would be a "disruptive burden" for Europe. He added that there were around 5 million refugees in the countries neighboring Syria, including around 1 million in Lebanon. Most of them fled from terrorists and militants who had earlier controlled the western part of Syria that borders Lebanon.
Now that most part of Syrian territory has been liberated from terrorists, Moscow claims, Syrian citizens can safely return to their homes. Tens of thousands of refugees have already headed for Syria from Lebanon, and the Moscow talks are expected to give a boost to the repatriation process.

After US, UK Stops Funding Militants Amid Syria Victory
TEHRAN (FNA)- After the US, the UK is to stop funding militants in Syria amid a growing government push to retake the last militant-held areas in the Arab country.
“As the situation on the ground in some regions has become increasingly difficult, we have reduced support for some of our non-humanitarian programming," a UK government spokeswoman said on Sunday, quoted by Reuters.
The British daily The Guardian reported Monday that the funding for the so-called Free Syria Police (FSP) is set to come to an end in September. The force was set up after 2011, when foreign-backed militancy started ravaging Syria.
Syria, which has recently liberated the Southern provinces of Dara’a, Sweida, and Quneitra, is turning its focus to the last stronghold of militants in the Northwestern Idlib Province.
The Guardian said Britain's decision to end support for militants shows the country "has accepted that the Syrian opposition, which it has backed since the early days of the civil war in 2012 to 2013, is facing imminent defeat”.
The decision came after a BBC Panorama investigation broadcast last December revealed that the British cash used to form a "police force" in militant-held areas in Syria was being diverted to extremist groups.
According to the report, "officers" from the force had been caught cooperating with militant groups.
The program said "police officers" in Idlib had to be approved by al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s Syria offshoot, and that similar militants in the neighboring Aleppo Province had been forced to hand over cash to Nouralddeen Zinki, another Takfiri group.
Earlier this year, the US told the so-called Free Syrian Army militant group that they could no longer rely on Washington's support which had been trickling since 2011 as the army launched an operation which resulted in the liberation of the southern provinces.
On Friday, it was reported that Washington had also cut its $230 million funding for the so-called Syria stabilization projects, citing increased contributions from the Saudi Arabian regime and other allies.

Rebuilding Syria: RT films repaired factories & roads as country slowly returns to peaceful life
War-torn Syria is rebuilding after the successful expulsion of militants from large parts of the country. RT’s crew visited strategic factories and roads, as well as peach orchards, as they return to normality.
A cable and electrics factory located in the town of Adra outside Damascus was looted clean by militants during the war. As the Syrian government got it back under its control, nothing but a bare, badly damaged building was remained. The factory is now back online, once again producing much-needed power cables which are used to fix the disrupted and ransacked electricity lines across the country.
Apart from the electricity network, Syria’s road infrastructure has been badly damaged during the war. Two major cities – Hama and Homs – are located only 40km from each other, yet people were forced to take long detours though jihadist-held territories if they wished to travel from one city to the other.
With the large bridge near the recently-liberated town of Al Rastan repaired, the travel time between the two cities has once again been brought back to 30 minutes drive – instead of a six-hour long dangerous journey.
While the country still relies on international aid, local food production and distribution are getting back on track. The market in Homs, which is more than 2,000 years old, has seen many wars and disasters. And it appears to have made it through this latest conflict, returning to busy and bustling normality.
“It would’ve been much worse if it wasn’t for the incredibly fertile soil here. In this peach garden some tree branches snap under the weight of fruit,” RT’s Igor Zhdanov reported, as he examined ripe peaches at a farm in the Homs province.

Study: Traces of radioactive contamination found in homes of six Hanford workers

The levels are low, but if some microparticles are inhaled or ingested by nuclear-site workers or their families, the radioactive dust is a “potential source of internal radiation exposure,” the study’s author writes.

Dust samples from the homes of six Hanford nuclear-site workers in the Tri-City area contained traces of radioactive contamination, according to a study published this month in the Journal of Environmental Engineering Science.

The levels are low, but if some microparticles are inhaled or ingested by the workers or their families, the radioactive dust is a “potential source of internal radiation exposure,” writes Marco Kaltofen, a civil engineer whose peer-reviewed study also found radioactive particles in dust samples in nuclear workers’ homes near the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and the former Rocky Flats Plant in Colorado.

The particles were found in samples collected over a period of years from the homes of the nuclear workers and those of their neighbors. Inhalation of the particles, which included uranium, thorium, plutonium and americium, can increase the risk of cancer.

‘Other things’ in Iran? Bolton says regime change ‘not US policy,’ but has more tricks up his sleeve
National security advisor John Bolton declared that regime change in Iran is not a US objective. But he did promise to hit Tehran with sanctions and “other things.” So where does pressure end and regime change begin?

“Let me be clear, the reimposition of the sanctions, we think, is already having a significant effect on Iran’s economy and on, really, popular opinion inside Iran,” Bolton told reporters while on a visit to Jerusalem.

But when asked what the US’ endgame is in Iran, Bolton claimed that the Ayatollah’s regime is safe: “Just to be clear, regime change in Iran is not American policy. But what we want is massive change in the regime’s behavior,” he replied. “We are going to do other things to put pressure on Iran as well,” he added, not specifying what those might be.

Despite Bolton’s assurances, it is hard not to recall his speech to dissident Iranian exiles in Paris last year. Then, Bolton promised that “the Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1979 revolution will not last until its 40th birthday,” in February 2019, adding that “the only solution is to change the regime itself.” He also said that members of his audience then, the People’s Mujahedeen, or MEK, were a “viable” alternative to the current Iranian government.

With Iran already feeling the squeeze after one round of sanctions, with its currency plunging and foreign firms under pressure, another is due to be imposed this November, targeting Iran’s oil revenue and banking sectors.

“So we will see what plays out in November,” Bolton said. “But the president has made it very clear - his words - he wants maximum pressure on Iran, maximum pressure, and that is what is going on.”

While Bolton did not elaborate on what he meant by “other things,” he was more than likely referring to the US State Department’s creation of the Iran Action Group last week. Although dismissed as a sheer coincidence, it was announced on August 16, the 65th anniversary of the CIA coup that overthrew Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohamed Mossadegh.

While again targeting Tehran’s “behavior”, the US’ endgame might not be dissimilar to the historic precedent. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said its goal is to address Iran’s “hostile activity and support the Iranian people,” by means of sponsoring opposition groups within Iran, and emboldening ongoing protests.

All of this amounts to a deliberate push for regime change, Iranian political scientist Kaveh Afrasiabi told RT.

“As the saying goes, if it talks and walks like a duck then it's a duck,” he said. “Regime change as an approach by the current US administration against Iran can be easily inferred from the totality of utterly hostile, and illegal, policies that seek to economically paralyze Iran.”

American politician and Middle East analyst Paul Heroux draws a distinction between “pressure” and regime change, though he adds that the end result can often be the same.

“Regime change is resisted in every country in the world,” he told RT. “It is more difficult to gain international support for regime change, but obtaining pressure with the goal of changing behavior is less difficult.”

Whether the US wants full regime change or wants to turn up the heat, the Iranian government is putting on a brave face, with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif swearing that his country would “never again” be usurped through “pressure, misinformation & demagoguery.”

The US has not just been waving the economic hammer at Iran, but also at its own European allies. Earlier this month President Trump warned that “anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States.”

While the leaders of the EU may be keen to salvage the Iran nuclear deal, even calling this week for Europe to set up alternative payment systems to persuade Iran to remain committed, financial pressure might well dictate otherwise. Trade between the EU and Iran is worth just over $10 billion per year, while trade with the United States is worth $1.1 trillion per year – the largest bilateral relationship in the world.

“Most countries will choose to do business with the US because the international reserve currency is the dollar,” Heroux believes. “The problem with this approach is that the US is accelerating the demise of the dollar as the international reserve currency.”

Trade with the EU accounts for more than 16 percent of Iran’s foreign trade. Cutting this off would deal a heavy blow to Iran’s economy.

“Trump expects the sanctions and new economic hardships to make the Iranian people revolt and topple the government together with the entire political system,” Vladimir Sazhin, Senior Research Associate at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Oriental Studies, told RT earlier in July. He added that the US president is “wrong” and does not adequately understand Iranian society.

An economic downfall might indeed weaken Rouhani’s government, but would be unlikely to lead to any system changes. Instead it would strengthen the Iranian president’s rivals – Iranian hardliners, who harbor extremely anti-American views and who would make any potential negotiations impossible.

“Instead of treading the ruinous path of war with Iran, a prudent US policy is desperately needed, one that would engage Iran in meaningful diplomacy, which is sadly lacking today,” Kaveh Afrasiabi concluded.

Senior Iranian Cleric: If U.S Attacks, Israel and Allies Would Be Targeted
Ahmad Khatami tells worshippers attending Eid prayers that Trump's offer of talks with Iranian leaders was unacceptable

A senior Iranian cleric warned Washington on Wednesday that if it attacked Iran, the United States and allied Israel would be targeted, as a war of words escalated after the re-imposition of the U.S. sanctions on Iran.

"The price of a war with Iran is very high for America. They know if they harm this country and this state in the slightest way, the United States and its main ally in the region, the Zionist regime (of Israel) would be targeted," Khatami said.

Russia: No talks with US on Iran's Exit from Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov underlined that Moscow has held no talks with Washington on Iran's presence or exit from Syria.

"We have never discussed Iran’s withdrawal from Syria with the US," Peskov told reporters on Tuesday.

Peskov's remarks came in reaction to the recent claims by US National Security Adviser John Bolton who claimed that "the US, Israel and Russia have common interests in minimizing Iran’s influence in Syria and Putin and Trump have reached agreements in this respect".

In relevant remarks on mid-August, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow sees intentions of the US and the West in general to impede the Astana process for the Syrian settlement.

‘Master of their house’? Bolton to ‘inspect’ Ukraine on its Independence Day

‘Master of their house’? Bolton to ‘inspect’ Ukraine on its Independence Day
US national security advisor John Bolton’s upcoming visit to Ukraine on its Independence Day demonstrates the true limits of this ‘independence,’ experts told RT, noting that Kiev seems to be fully reliant on Washington’s support.

Bolton will attend a military parade in Kiev and meet with virtually all key figures of the Ukrainian government, including President Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Vladimir Groysman as well as foreign and defense ministers, according to the Ukrainian ambassador to the US, Valery Chaly, who praised this visit as a display of the US “support to Ukraine.”

In fact, Bolton’s visit is more of an “inspection” rather than a courtesy call, Vladimir Kornilov, a political analyst, historian and journalist, told RT, adding that it has recently become a sort of an “unhealthy tradition” for Ukraine to invite US officials as honored guests on its Independence Day celebrations. Top American officials attending military parades, like Pentagon chief James Mattis last year, shows “the true state of Ukrainian independence” and indicates who has long-since become “the true masters in the Ukrainian house,” he said.

The Ukrainian government is “not so much worried about Ukraine as they are worried about their own fate,” believes Vladimir Zharikhin, the deputy head of the Institute of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The current Kiev authorities have been heavily relying on US support since the 2014 coup that ousted Viktor Yanukovich and plunged Ukraine into crisis. Even though they apparently interpret Bolton’s visit as a sign of such ongoing unconditional support, Zharikhin believes Kiev might yet be in for a surprise.

“Ukraine has long been de facto living off US help and support,” Kornilov said, adding that it is “in no position” to demand any guarantees from the US. On the contrary, “it the US, it is Bolton, who will demand guarantees from Kiev that it will stick to its foreign policy, which was de facto dictated by Washington … since 2014 or 2015.”

Apart from that, Bolton will be able to assess the situation ahead of the March 2019 presidential vote and help decide whether Washington should back Poroshenko’s re-election bid. “The US is well aware of the fact that … there is no point in putting all eggs in one basket,” Kornilov told RT, adding that the US State Department will most likely review this issue and back various political forces in order to have “a number of fallback options.”

The extent of Washington’s influence on Ukrainian political life was revealed by former US Vice President Joe Biden, who boasted it took him just “six hours” to sack prosecutor-general through threats of US financial aid withdrawal. However, simply following US directives might soon be not enough to save Ukraine from its financial troubles.

The situation with the Ukrainian national debt is becoming increasingly alarming; over the past five years it has soared nearly fourfold to some $71.7 billion as the government had to continuously borrow money to finance the crisis-ridden economy. The Ukrainian debt-to-GDP ratio jumped from some 40 percent to as high as 71.8 percent over the same period, due to the fall in the hryvna exchange rate, thus becoming one of the highest in Europe. The country’s debt obligations will peak in 2018-2020 but it continues to pin its hopes on a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as its current $17.5bn program expires in March 2019, even though Kiev repeatedly failed to fully implement IMF recommendations.

It’s not the winning? IS leader Baghdadi dwells on group’s field defeat in unverified audio address
Islamic State has released an audio recording of what it said is an address by its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The terrorist chief had remained silent since September 2017 and was presumed to be in a vegetative state or killed.

The speaker in the recording, who couldn’t be verified as Baghdadi, tried to explain to the Islamic State (IS/formerly ISIS/ISIL) supporters that victory or defeat for them shouldn’t be about controlling territories and cities or achieving military superiority, the SITE intelligence group reported.

The formerly powerful IS, which controlled vast areas in Iraq and Syria a few years ago, has now been crushed in both countries and holds only small pieces of land in the desert.

In the 55-minute-long audio, published by the group’s al-Furqan media outlet, the person claiming to be Baghdadi also called on his followers to persevere and lashed out at foreign media for waging an information campaign against Islamic State.

Reports of Baghdadi being dead or seriously injured in airstrikes had emerged on numerous occasions since the rise of IS in 2014, but they never received official confirmation from the militaries of Iraq, Syria, the US or Russia.

A previous statement attributed to the jihadist leader was released in late September last year and was also aimed at dispelling rumors of his demise.

According to some reports, Baghdadi may currently be in hiding somewhere in the Iraqi-Syrian border region.

ロドリゴ・ドゥテルテ 73歳だから言える?

‘CIA Is Listening, May Kill Me’: Philippines President Mulls Ditching His Smartphone
TEHRAN (FNA)- Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is thinking of dumping his smartphone over fears that the CIA is constantly eavesdropping on his conversations and might use his private information to eventually assassinate him.

“I know, the US is listening. I’m sure it’s the CIA, it’s also the one who will kill me,” Duterte said in Cebu City on Tuesday, rejuvenating fears that Washington may seek his demise over his independent foreign policy and willingness to obtain weapons from other global suppliers, RT reported.

To avert possible smartphone intrusion by outside powers, which Duterte said could include "Russia, China, Israel, and maybe Indonesia”, the 73-year-old leader is considering going back to using a basic cellphone, with which eavesdropping and interception is harder.

Noting that he is not a tech-savvy leader, he anecdotally recalled how he once sent a confidential message to all of his Viber contacts after accidentally clicking the “send all” feature.

Duterte has long feared that the CIA might be out for vengeance amid deteriorating bilateral ties with Washington. Just last Friday, Duterte once again noted that the CIA “wanted me dead”.

Washington’s refusal to sell assault rifles to Manila, over concerns about the country’s human rights record amid its ongoing war on drugs, has forced Duterte to seek new suppliers. Manila, which has long depended on the US for weapons, turned to China and Russia to fill the gap.

Moscow and Manila signed a military cooperation agreement last year, with Russia already supplying over 5,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles to the Philippines for free, to help it fight Islamist insurgency. Despite pressure from the US, Duterte’s government is also considering the purchase of patrol boats, helicopters, armored vehicles and even submarines from Russia.

On Tuesday, Duterte once again defended his choice to seek new arms suppliers, after US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver asked Manila to think “very carefully” about the consequences of acquiring Russian weapons.

“You’re not just buying capability, you’re investing in a relationship,” Schriver noted earlier this month.

US-Philippines relations, however, have never been based on mutual respect, Duterte stressed, noting Washington's failure to treat Manila as an equal partner.

“Relations? When was it really a relation of mutuality and respect?” Duterte asked, stressing that while the US used to provide refurbished military equipment China and Russia offer brand-new supplies, without preconditions.

FM: US Slapped Sanctions on Russia Not Due to Syria or Ukraine, But to Deter Moscow

TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Tuesday that Washington has introduced sanctions against Moscow only because of the wish to promote the policy of deterring Russia.

"Everyone understands that the sanctions against Russia were launched not because of Syria and not because of Ukraine or Crimea, or whatever, but only because of the wish to use the methods of unfair competition and promote the absolutely dead-end policy of deterring the Russian Federation," Lavrov noted, TASS reported.

"Problems with the Syrian settlement and the Ukrainian settlement are rooted not in Russia’s position, but in the unwillingness of certain circles - both in Syria and around it - to implement [UN Security Council] Resolution 2254, and regarding Ukraine - the inability of Ukraine’s authorities to implement their obligations under the Minsk accords," the top diplomat stated.

US President Donald Trump earlier told Reuters that he will be ready to discuss the possibility of lifting American sanctions against Russia if Moscow starts taking joint measures with Washington, including on the settlement in Syria and Ukraine.
