Berlin should ‘recalibrate’ partnership with US in ‘sober and critical’ way – German FM
Germany must “recalibrate the transatlantic partnership” with Washington, the foreign minister says. This comes as the two nations are locked in a trade war and numerous disagreements, from military spending to energy.

“The US is more than the White House,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted on Sunday in response to US President Donald Trump, who has unleashed a trade war on the EU and had repeatedly blasted the German government over various policy issues.

Maas added that he hopes the upcoming ‘German Year in the US’ promotional campaign will help to “recalibrate the transatlantic partnership in a sober, critical and self-critical way.”

The ‘German Year in the US’ campaign (Deutschlandjahr USA) was designed by the government to showcase the friendship between the two states and to present a favorable image of Germany to the American public.

Speaking on Friday, Maas said that Berlin needs “a new and balanced partnership with the US.” The German minister cited “a growing protectionism” by its major transatlantic partner as a key reason for this requirement.

Berlin needs “to adjust” its policies given the new reality, Maas noted. However, he stopped short of saying it works against Washington, claiming the move would serve the best interests of both nations and insisting that the EU should become more active in areas where Washington “pulls back.”

Trump often singled out Germany when criticizing the EU on a wide range of policies. He lambasted Berlin for maintaining a large trade surplus with the US and for its level of military spending – something the president openly branded as “not fair.”“Germany pays 1 percent (slowly) of GDP towards NATO, while we pay 4 percent of a MUCH larger GDP. Does anybody believe that makes sense?” Trump tweeted in June.

Germany Calls on EU to Exclude US in Payment System to Preserve JCPOA
TEHRAN (FNA)- German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called on the European countries to devise a payment mechanism to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the US exit from the nuclear agreement.

"Europe needs to set up payment systems independent of the United States if it wants to save the nuclear deal between Iran and major powers that was abandoned by US President Donald Trump in early May," Maas said.

The German foreign minister underlined that each day that the deal is alive is better than the crisis that would otherwise threaten the Middle East.

German minister calls for payment channels independent of US
BERLIN, Germany − Germany’s foreign minister called for Europe to strengthen its financial independence from the United States and set up independent payment channels as he laid out proposals for a future “balanced partnership” with the U.S.

Heiko Maas wrote in a piece for the daily Handelsblatt Wednesday that he envisions taking a “balanced share of responsibility” and being “a counterbalance when the U.S. crosses red lines.”

Maas said the U.S. and Europe have been drifting apart since well before Donald Trump’s presidency − but he also criticized recent decisions such as Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Germany, France and Britain, the European signatories to the 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers, have vowed to keep it alive.

“In this situation, it is of strategic significance that we say clearly to Washington: we want to work together, but we will not allow you to act over our heads to our detriment,” Maas wrote.

“That is why it was right to legally protect European companies from sanctions,” he added. “That is why it is indispensable to strengthen European autonomy by setting up payment channels that are independent of the U.S., creating a European monetary fund and setting up an independent Swift system.”

He didn’t elaborate. SWIFT is the system overseeing international bank transfers. Separately, there has been talk for some time of upgrading a bailout fund cobbled together during Europe’s debt crisis into a full-fledged European monetary fund to assist troubled countries.

“The devil is in a thousand details,” Maas said. “But every day that the (Iran) agreement continues to exist is better than the highly explosive crisis that otherwise looms in the Middle East.”

He also said that Europe must “expose fake news as such,” renewing Germany’s argument that, if trade isn’t reduced to goods, Europe rather than the U.S. has a deficit.

ジョン・マケインが死亡 その2

‘Hero & patriot representing our best ideals’: US politicians mourn McCain’s passing
Despite being ‘disinvited’ by McCain from his funeral, Donald Trump has joined a long list of US politicians who have expressed their sincerest condolences to the McCain family after the Republican senator passed away.

“Our hearts and prayers are with you!” Trump tweeted after McCain's family announced the senator's death.

Recalling John McCain's six-decade service to the nation, many US politicians called the Republican a true “patriot” and a “war hero.”

"We have lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country," Defense Secretary James Mattis said in a statement.

Sen. Bernie Sanders also called McCain his "friend" and an "American" hero", noting the politician's "decency and honor." "He will be missed not just in the U.S. Senate but by all Americans who respect integrity and independence," the Vermont senator said.

‘Patriot or warmonger?’ McCain’s track record comes under public scrutiny
The death of John McCain caused mixed feelings and triggered a heated debate over the American values represented by the Republican. While some commended McCain’s patriotism, others questioned his moral integrity.

Following the announcement of 81-year-old John McCain’s death, the public took to social media to express their condolences and share mixed feelings about the Republican’s life and deeds. Amid an endless outpouring of sympathies for the McCain family, some chose to challenge the massive praise McCain received posthumously.

‘Hero representing best US ideals’: Politicians & public figures praise McCain’s legacy

In his 36 years of service in Congress, McCain had acquired a reputation as a maverick Republican who was not shy about throwing American troops in harm's way. Over the years, McCain advocated for military intervention in a number of countries including Bosnia, Kosovo, Georgia, North Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, and Mali.

McCain also adamantly lobbied against Russia and China – policies which some Twitter users found confrontational and potentially disastrous.

Calling him a ‘warmonger,’ some users recalled McCain’s rendezvous with Syrian militants and even accused him of conspiring “with Hillary and Obama to create ISIS.” Others directly accused the deceased senator of pursuing his ideals at the cost of entire nations and wanting “to wipe Syria, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, and Vietnam off the map.”

“If you are a non-interventionist, you should already know that McCain was a war monger, in the pocket of military industrial complex and is responsible for hundreds of thousands of dead. He meddled for war in the Middle East and Ukraine. He was an evil, entitled, heartless man,” one user tweeted.

Amid the torrent of praise from acting and former politicians as well as public figures, some people claimed that, while McCain was a useful “tool” of the GOP, his public image and policies nonetheless tarnished the entire Republican party’s reputation.

The US president is facing massive fury over his failure to issue an official White House statement praising the deeds of John McCain, with his critics accusing him of insulting a true American hero because of personal enmity.

Donald Trump has reportedly ordered his aides to scrap a eulogy in praise of John McCain, over a personal grudge the president had towards the Republican hawk, according to the Washington Post’s report. As the New York Times accused the president of failure to award a “cursory public show of respect for John McCain,” Twitter users called the US leader a “morally bankrupt person” and accused him of “mocking and trolling” the national hero.

Amid the outburst of criticism, the Washington Post has learned from unnamed ‘insiders’ that the White House staff stood firm on issuing a statement of praise for the Arizona Senator. However, the eulogy release, advocated by Chief of Staff John F. Kelly and press secretary Sarah Sanders, was scrapped at the last minute on the personal order of Trump, anonymous sources told the publication.

While multiple drafts of the statement were prepared for the president, the affirmation text, in particular, wanted to commend the courage of the Vietnam War POW and proclaim him a “hero” for his long service to his country. Trump instead reportedly told his staff that a tweet would suffice in this instance.

In sharp contrast to an array of similarly worded sympathies and praises, expressed by US lawmakers, former presidents and foreign leaders, on Saturday Trump instead tweeted briefly: “My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!”

To soften the potential public relations blow for the disregard for McCain's status, Trump's immediate subordinates started posting statements of praise for the late senator from Arizona, who died after battling brain cancer on Saturday. The White House press secretary and Vice President Mike Pence are just among those few closest to Trump who applauded McCain's character.

Trump’s animosity towards McCain –he once declared that the POW Republican was “not a war hero”– was shared by plenty in the online community, where a number of voices questioned the senator’s moral integrity and his representation of American values and interests.

Being an outspoken critic of Donald Trump and his policies, the Republican hawk was never shy about attacking the administration. Using his political weight, the 81-year-old tried to undermine Trump's candidacy from within the party, eventually leading to a full-blown rift between both men. Weeks leading up to his death, McCain called Trump “naïve” for meeting Vladimir Putin at the Helsinki Summit.

“The damage inflicted by President Trump's naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is difficult to calculate. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake,” he said.

‘Hero representing best US ideals’: Politicians & public figures praise McCain’s legacy

While McCain, prior to his death, requested that George W. Bush and Barack Obama deliver eulogies at his funeral, the senator chose to ‘disinvite’ Trump to his service. It is unclear whether the US leader will attend the state funeral on Friday.

Russia, Turkey, and the Fate of Idlib
Ömer Özkizilcik
In Idlib, Turkey could deter Russian airstrikes and ensure the region remains out of the Syrian regime’s control by going after extremist groups.

While negotiating terms of surrender with Free Syrian Army factions in southwestern Syria in early July, Russian officials warned rebels evacuating the area not to regroup in Idlib, as this city would be the regime’s next target. However, despite Russia’s plans to attack Idlib, the presence of the Turkish army in the area is preventing them from carrying out an assault that could lead to conflict between the tenuous allies. Although Turkey has strong motivation to maintain its sphere of influence in the province, Russia may be able to use the threat of airstrikes to pressure Turkey either to leave or increase its fight against radical groups such as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Hurras al-Din.

In May 2017, the Astana peace process designated Idlib a de-escalation zone. In accordance with the agreement, Russia, Iran, and Turkey established military observation points along Idlib’s frontlines, 12 overseen by Turkey and another 10 by Russia and 7 by Iran. Turkish authorities warned Russia and the Assad regime that any attack on Idlib would void the entire Astana process. Turkey’s presence also put its army in direct contact with local authorities and factions, who began to see it as the guarantor of peace in Idlib. This improved Turkey’s leverage over and coordination with the armed Syrian opposition.

Yet Turkey will have little choice but to take on the more extreme elements of this opposition if it wants to avoid Russian involvement in Idlib. Russian Presidential Special Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev declared on July 31 that Russia expects Turkey to coordinate with the moderate Syrian opposition to solve Idlib’s Jabhat al-Nusra problem. Among the main groups fighting the regime in Idlib is HTS, formed from Jabhat al-Nusra after it split from al-Qaeda. Abu Muhammed al-Jawlani, HTS’s leader accepted the establishment of Turkish observation points in Idlib. The group’s al-Qaeda core−who had been in a dispute with Jawlani over the decision to cut ties with the organization−saw their acceptance of the de-escalation zone as illegitimate. This faction split off at end of February to form the Hurras al-Din group, which maintained its ties with al-Qaeda.

Even as it continues to clash with Hurras al-Din, HTS’s main rival is the Islamist group Jabhat Tahrir Suriya (JTS), a coalition between Ahrar al-Sham and Noureddine al-Zengi Battalions whose attacks are often also supported by independent militia Suqour al-Sham. JTS and HTS fought each other from February to May 2018, when both sides agreed to a ceasefire. During the fighting, HTS was pushed back to the Turkish border, losing several strategic locations such Maarat al-Nouman, which lies along the main road between Damascus and Aleppo.

Although Turkish forces have not yet taken action against these groups, on May 28, Turkey gathered the other rebel factions in Idlib under one banner in order to counterbalance these radical groups. The new National Front for Liberation includes eleven Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army factions, including Faylaq al-Sham, Jaysh al-Nasr, the Free Idlib Army, the First and Second Coastal Divisions, the First and Twenty-Third Divisions, the Second Army, Jaysh al-Nukhba, Shuhada al-Islam Darayya, and Al-Hurriyat Brigade. They have been joined by JTS, Jaysh al-Ahrar, and Suqour al-Sham. With those brigades joining the National Front for Liberation, all Idlib rebels that Russia and Turkey consider acceptable have been gathered under one banner. Except for its new members JTS and Suqour al-Sham, the National Front for Liberation has so far not been involved in any local infighting, and many of its factions enjoy good relations with Turkey, even taking part in Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch in Afrin. If Turkey cannot guarantee that they maintain territorial control of Idlib, other factions Turkey supports, notably in northern Aleppo and Afrin, would question the reliability of that support.

These chaotic dynamics give Moscow the opportunity to pressure Ankara. While the Assad regime would prefer to regain control over all of Idlib, Russia may be satisfied if Turkey coordinates with the National Front for Liberation to rid Idlib of HTS and Hurras al-Din. But if Russia doubts Turkey is willing to do so, it will use the threat of air strikes to pressure Turkey to withdraw from Idlib so that the regime can prepare a full ground offensive. Although the limited Turkish military presence at the observation points blocks the regime and allied militias from advancing along frontlines, the regime and Russia have been able to bomb Idlib as they like over the past year. Turkey could expand its limited armed presence to the entire Idlib area, which would deter Russia from launching air strikes on rebel targets for fear of accidentally hitting Turkish forces and launching a diplomatic crisis. Yet this expansion would also increase the number of targets for jihadi attacks and assassinations. Retreating from Idlib altogether could also encourage Russia to use the same tactics in Afrin and northern Aleppo, endangering Turkey’s reliability as a guarantor of the Astana process.

An aerial bombardment in Idlib would also undermine Turkey’s guarantee of safety for the civilian population. In addition to the range of armed opposition groups, the Idlib area hosts one of the largest Internally Displaced People (IDP) populations in Syria. Airstrikes on the province would leave 2.5 million civilians with “no place else to go.” Civilians in Lataminah in northern Hama−a town within near a Turkish observation point within the broader Idlib de-escalation zone that faced increased regime shelling in late May−have already questioned Turkey’s ability to guarantee their safety. Turkish officials in Idlib assured the local population that Turkey will stay to guarantee the de-escalation zone. According to reports by Nedaa Syria, Turkey started building a helicopter field and two big hospitals to supply its soldiers at the observation points, and to further fortify its positions, indicating does indeed intend to remain. But if locals do not trust this promise, the population in Idlib may prefer to take their chances by surrendering to the regime to avoid higher casualties. And if the populations of Afrin and northern Aleppo follow their example, Turkey will have lost its ability to enforce peace on the ground−and thereby any leverage in Syria’s peace process.

However, even if it retreats from Idlib under Russian pressure, Turkey could make the campaign to retake the area costly for the regime despite Russian support. Turkey’s direct control of northern Aleppo and Afrin gives it a direct link with which it can supply weapons, ammunition, and manpower to the National Front for Liberation in Idlib. This may encourage Russia to exhaust other options before trying to oust Turkey so it can launch a massive air strike campaign. Moreover, Russia’s cooperation with Turkey on energy projects such as Turkish Stream and Akkuyu Nuclear station−and closer military ties as seen not just in Afrin but with Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 Air Defense Missile Systems in December 2017−will make it keen not to damage its relations by launching a major attack on Idlib.

It appears Turkey and Russia can reach an accommodation by focusing on extremist opposition groups. Rumors have emerged from senior Hurras al-Din member al-Ansari al-Barqawi that Turkey has been trying to locate its leadership and bases so it can target and eliminate the al-Qaeda branch. By using its allied rebel factions to fight radical groups, Turkey may be able to convince Russia to leave more moderate opposition groups alone. Whether Turkey can eliminate Hurras al-Din and HTS remains to be seen. Regardless, to maintain its influence and prevent a new refugee crisis, Turkey will work hard to ensure Idlib remains out of the regime’s control.

Jordan MPs Seek Scrapping Peace Deal with Israel
TEHRAN (FNA)- Jordanian lawmakers say they are fiercely opposed to the appointment of a new ambassador to Israel, demanding that the peace treaty with Tel Aviv should be scrapped.

Ghassan Majali is expected to replace the incumbent Ambassador to Israel Walid Obeidat, who is set to conclude his tenure after more than five years, presstv reported.

Lawmakers say if Jordan decides to appoint an ambassador to Israel, it should change the nature of its position.

"The new ambassador should defend Jordan's interest, and mainly halt the activity of the occupation regime in al-Quds," MP Hazem Majali stressed.

Israel occupied the West Bank from Jordan in 1967. It later signed a peace agreement with Amman in 1994 making Jordan the second Arab country that has sealed a peace agreement with Tel Aviv.

Jordan is the custodian of Jerusalem al-Quds’ Muslim holy sites, making Amman sensitive to any changes of the status of the occupied city.

Following a decision by US President Donald Trump to relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem al-Quds, criticisms grew among Jordanians toward what they saw as an effort that could undermine their role in the holy city.

It is generally believed that the move by the Jordanian Parliament to scrap the peace agreement with Israel is a result of the same criticisms.

"Our fundamental stance is that the peace agreement with Israel should be abrogated,” MP Majali was quoted as saying by Israeli website Ynetnews.

The Israeli regime lays claim to the entire occupied holy city of Jerusalem al-Quds which Palestinians want as the capital of their future state.

Tel Aviv has been emboldened by US President Donald Trump's recognition of the holy city as Israel’s "capital". On May 19, Tel Aviv adopted a controversial bill, which affirmed the stance, while declaring Israel as “the nation-state of the Jewish people".

Jordan opposes Tel Aviv’s efforts to stir up tensions by tampering with the city’s status quo.

The Israeli embassy in Amman shut down last July after two Jordanians were gunned down by an embassy guard, prompting the return to Israel of the Israeli ambassador along with the guard involved in the shooting.

The guard, who claimed that he shot the Jordanians in self-defense, received a hero’s welcome on his return, further enraging the Jordanians.

シリア関連 2018/8/26〜

Analyst: Russian, Syrian Defense Shields Fully Ready to Confront Western Airstrikes
TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Russian defense analyst noted recent efforts jointly made by terrorist groups and the western states to possibly stage a false-flag chemical attack in Idlib as a pretext to invade Syria, and said that the Russian and Syrian defense systems are fully ready to dodge any airstrike.

Defense analyst and editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko was quoted as saying by the Arabic website of Sputnik news agency on Sunday that the terrorists' provocative acts, including their use of chemical weapons in Idlib may lead to a repetition of the April 14 scenario and the West-led coalition attacks against the government in Damascus.

He underscored the Syrian defense shield's preparedness to confront any possible attacks, and said they are able to cover all main cities and towns.

The Russian analyst said that the Russian defense systems stationed in Syria are also able to protect the Humeimim and Tartus airbases and other regions hosting the Russian military men, advisors and experts.

Korotchenko also said that the provocative moves planned with the partnership of terrorists are likely to lead to attacks against the Syrian army as such false-flag operations are one of Washington's tools to attain its foreign policy objectives in the region and undermine deescalation and peace efforts in Syria.

The western coalition, led by the US, launched missile strikes against Syria on April 14 under the pretext of a false-flag chemical attack against Douma in Eastern Ghouta of Damascus.

On Saturday, the Russian Defense Ministry accused the United States, the United Kingdom and France of preparing to carry out new strikes against Syria under the pretext of chemical weapons use by the Syrian government forces.

"The Western countries' actions in spite of their public statements are aimed at another sharp deterioration of the situation in the Middle East region and the disruption of the peace process on the territory of Syria," defense ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov noted.

According to the spokesman, militants in the Idlib province are preparing to stage the use of chemical weapons against civilians by the government.

"To carry out the alleged "chemical attack" in the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the province of Idlib, the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Jabhat Nusra terror organization) militants had delivered 8 tankers with chlorine… to a village a few kilometers from Jisr al-Shughur," the general stated.

For this purpose, USS The Sullivans destroyer with 56 cruise missiles on board arrived in the Persian Gulf several days ago, while a US В-1В bomber carrying 24 air-to-surface AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles was deployed at Al Udeid air base in Qatar, the spokesman suggested.

"This provocation with the active participation of the British special services will serve as another pretext for the US, UK and France to conduct a missile strike on the Syrian government and economic facilities," Konashenkov said.

A group of militants trained under the guidance by British private military company Olive to work with poisonous substances has arrived in Idlib, the defense ministry added.

"The militants are tasked with imitating the rescue of the victims of chemical weapons' use in the vestments of the notorious White Helmets," the spokesman noted.

According to Konashenkov, "unfounded" statements vowing to respond to chemical weapons' use by the Syrian government made by a number of high-ranking representatives of the US, UK and France serve as indirect evidence of the preparation of another "act of aggression against Syria by the United States and its allies".

On August 23, National Security Adviser John Bolton reportedly told Russian Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev that America is prepared to respond with the greater force it has used in Syria before.

The US, UK, and France coordinated a massive airstrike on Syria in April 2018 after the alleged use of the chemical weapons in Douma had been reported by the controversial "White Helmets" NGO, which has repeatedly been caught staging false flag attacks.

However, OPCW experts announced in July they had found traces of organic substances containing chlorine, reportedly used in the attack in Douma. Yet there was no evidence that nerve agents had been used in the attack.

The first Western missile attack on Syrian government forces was conducted by the United States on April 7 after Washington had accused Damascus of being behind the alleged chemical weapons use in the settlement of Khan Sheikhoun in the Idlib province.

Damascus has strongly denied the claims, with President Bashar Assad saying that the attack was a provocation aimed to justify the US strike on Syria.

US Military Stations Advanced Radars at Bases in Northern Syria to Create No-Fly Zone
TEHRAN (FNA)- A Kurdish news website reported that the US military has deployed several advanced radar systems at their bases in Hasaka province in a move that is eventually aimed at starting a no-fly zone in Northern Syria.

Baas News quoted Kurdish sources as claiming that the US-led coalition has installed modern radars in its military airport South of Kobani and Romeilan in Hasaka province.

It further said that the move is aimed at creating a no-flying zone in Northern and Southern Syria from Manbij to Deir Ezzur.

The website went on to say that several trucks, carrying arms and ammunition, arrived in regions that are under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces in Northern and Eastern Syria.

Bass news added that deployment of radars came after James Jefri, the US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Syrian affairs, pointed to creation of no-flying zone in Eastern Syria.

On Saturday, the US army built a new military base near the town of Hajin in Eastern Deir Ezzur.

In the meantime, the US-led coalition helicopters transferred a large volume of equipment to al-Amr oilfield that is under the SDF's control.

The new base is the fourth in which the US forces have deployed. The US force had already been deployed in al-Amr oilfield, Konico Gas Company and al-Tasbni bases.

The coalition has reinvigorated its presence in Northern and Eastern Syria by dispatching more troops and equipment to the region.

Russian Military: Thousands of Militants Preparing Attack on Syria's Hama, Aleppo
TEHRAN (FNA)- Several thousand militants armed with heavy weaponry and armored vehicles are preparing for an offensive on the Syrian provinces of Hama and Aleppo, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The ministry said that the leader of the Tahrir al-Sham group (affiliated with the Nusra terror organization) called on all militants in the Syrian northwestern province of Idlib to prepare for an offensive against the Syrian government forces, Sputnik reported.

“Several thousand militants with heavy weaponry and armored vehicles have been gathered for an offensive on Hama and Aleppo,” the Russian center for Syrian reconciliation’s spokesman said.

The so-called drills, led by the White Helmets group, on actions “in case of chemical contamination,” are currently being held in the town of Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib, the spokesman noted.

In the meantime, Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said that the Tahrir al-Sham militants are preparing a provocation in Idlib to accuse the Syrian government forces of using chemical weapons against civilians. The militants had brought eight canisters with chlorine to stage the chemical attack in Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib. These containers were subsequently handed over to the militants of al-Turkistani Islamic group and transported to the Haluz village near Jisr al-Shughour, Konashenkov added.

The chemical weapons provocation, currently being prepared by terrorists in Syria, is aimed at allowing France, the United Kingdom and the United States to carry out a strike on Syrian government’s targets, according to the Russian military. For this purpose, USS The Sullivans destroyer with 56 cruise missiles on board arrived in the Persian Gulf several days ago, while a US В-1В bomber carrying 24 air-to-surface AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles was deployed at Al Udeid air base in Qatar, Konashenkov said.

ジョン・マケインが死亡 その1

Senator John McCain dies aged 81

※ Medium2018/8/24
Do NOT Let Them Make A Saint Of This Asshole
“Our strategy should be not only to confront empire, but to lay siege to it. To deprive it of oxygen. To shame it. To mock it. With our art, our music, our literature, our stubbornness, our joy, our brilliance, our sheer relentlessness − and our ability to tell our own stories. Stories that are different from the ones we’re being brainwashed to believe.” ~ Arundhati Roy

John McCain’s family has announced that the Arizona Senator has opted to end treatment for brain cancer and live out his final few days in peace, presumably under the best hospice care money can buy. And I sincerely hope that it is peaceful. My statements about my desire for John McCain to shuffle off this mortal coil sooner rather than later have been highly publicized, and I stand by all of them, but I don’t wish him a painful or agitated end.

And, also, I am going to keep hammering on how very important it is that we refuse to bow to the aggressive demands from establishment loyalists that we be respectful of this warmongering psychopath and his blood-soaked legacy.

ロシアが最終的に米ドルを捨てる時が来た - 外務省

Time has come for Russia to finally ditch US dollar – Foreign Ministry
Russia will definitely respond to Washington’s latest sanctions and, in particular, it is accelerating efforts to abandon the American currency in trade transactions, said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.

“The time has come when we need to go from words to actions, and get rid of the dollar as a means of mutual settlements, and look for other alternatives,” he said in an interview with International Affairs magazine.

“Thank God, this is happening, and we will speed up this work,” Ryabkov said, explaining the move would come in addition to other “retaliatory measures” as a response to a growing list of US sanctions. Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak recently noted that a growing number of countries are interested in replacing the dollar as a medium in global oil trades and other transactions.

“There is a common understanding that we need to move towards the use of national currencies in our settlements. There is a need for this, as well as the wish of the parties,” Novak said.

According to the minister, it concerns both Turkey and Iran.

“We are considering an option of payment in national currencies with them. This requires certain adjustments in the financial, economic, and banking sectors” to accomplish. Last week, the Kremlin said it is interested in trading with Ankara using the Russian ruble and the Turkish lira. India has also vowed to pay for Iranian oil in rupees.

The world’s second-largest economy, China, has also been taking steps to challenge the greenback's dominance with the launch of an oil futures contract backed by Chinese currency, the petro-yuan. China and Iran have already agreed to stop using the dollar in global trade.

Outcry after study shows Google’s Android collects ten times more data than Apple’s iOS
A damning report into Google data collection found that the Android operating system sends ten times more personal information, including location data, to the tech giant than Apple’s iOS. The study caused an outcry on Twitter.

Yet, the research by Professor Douglas C. ,Schmidt from Vanderbilt University claims the figure is only the tip of the iceberg, as it represents activity when a device is stationary, meaning the user is not interacting with it. Once users start using their phone, the data sent to the server increases “considerably”.

Disgruntled Android users have flocked to Twitter to accuse the tech giant of “tapping into everything it can.”

The research found that dormant Androids are capable of sending about 900 data samples to Google within just 24 hours. A dormant, stationary Android phone (with the Chrome browser active in the background) sends location information to Google 340 times during per day or at an average of 14 data communications per hour. Around 35 percent of all data sent to Google was location data.

In contrast, Apple servers received location data once a day and the volume of location data collected is 16 times lower than what Google collects from Android.

“This result highlights the fact that the Android and Chrome platforms play an important role in Google’s data collection,” the research paper, published last week, reads.

The report is the second blow to the company in just a few days, coming just after Google was accused of routinely tracking users’ movements despite them explicitly asking it not to.

Google is able to obtain such data, without the user interacting with the device, via Android and the Chrome browser, apps like YouTube and Maps, as well as publisher and advertising tools, such Analytics, AdMob and AdWords.

Among information shared is mobile phone numbers, birthdates, zip codes, and in many cases, credit card numbers. Information on apps used and websites visited is also communicated, as well as location data.

Google has heavily criticized the study which a spokesman says “contains wildly misleading information”, the Telegraph reports.

Is China secretly building up its huge gold stockpile?
Official data from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) shows the country’s gold reserves have not increased since 2016, when Donald Trump was elected US president. They stayed unchanged at 59.24 million ounces (1,843 tons).

As of the end of June, the PBOC valued its precious metal reserves at $74.1 billion.

Analysts, however, have raised doubts that Beijing has really stopped accumulating gold. They claim a potential trade war with the US and this year’s slump in gold prices are reasons for China to buy.

“The strategic imperative is probably still there to add some gold to reserves quietly bit by bit,” Philip Klapwijk, managing director of Precious Metals Insights, told Bloomberg. The expert, who has tracked precious metals for nearly 30 years, said, “The reason to own gold as a portfolio diversification is even better given the rather strained relations with the US.”

As one of the top gold holders, China has been aggressively accumulating gold reserves to cut its dependence on the US dollar, according to Singapore’s BullionStar precious metals expert Ronan Manly. In an interview with RT, he said that the combined China-Russia gold reserves could shake US dominance in the global economy.

China has gone long periods without revealing increases in its gold holdings. In 2015, for the first time in six years, the PBOC announced a 57-percent jump in reserves to 53.3 million ounces. The announcement coincided with the adoption of stricter IMF rules for foreign reserves and debt data as the government pushed for the yuan to be included in the Special Drawing Rights basket. The IMF added the Chinese currency in October 2016, the last month that the PBOC announced an increase.

Iraqi Media: Regional Lobby after Dissolution of Hashd Al-Shaabi
TEHRAN (FNA)- A regional lobby is pressuring the Iraqi government to weaken Hashd al-Shaabi (popular forces) and pave the ground for its dissolution, Iraqi media reports said on Monday.

Informed sources were quoted as saying by the Arabic-language al-Qad Press that a US, Saudi, UAE and Turkish lobby is pressuring the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to dissolve Hashd al-Shaabi and other resistance groups in Iraq.

They added that the lobby has targeted Badr Organization, Kata'eb al-Hezbollah, Asa'eb al-Haq and al-Nujaba group for their assistance to the Syrian government against the terrorist groups.

This is while al-Abadi has several times opposed attempts to weaken Hashd al-Shaabi, warning that such a move would lead to the rise of the terrorist groups in Iraq again.

In relevant remarks on Friday, al-Abadi underlined his strong opposition to the withdrawal of Hashd al-Shaabi from large cities, noting that the danger of the ISIL terrorist group is still alive.

"Hashd al-Shaabi's withdrawal from large cities should not be affected by political pressures because the ISIL ideology still exists despite being defeated and expelled from Iraq and therefore, we should continue war against it," al-Abadi said.

He voiced opposition to the withdrawal of Hashd al-Shaabi forces from major cities and certain other regions in the current period of time, and said, "Evacuation of these regions will give the terrorist groups an opportunity to attack the Iraqi citizens."

Al-Abadi said the government will stand against those who want to distort Hashd al-Shaabi's face.

Also, in March, al-Abadi defended his decree to formally incorporate Hashd al-Shaabi forces into the Arab country’s security service, stressing that such a move would help establish security and stability.

Abadi stated that the integration of the volunteer forces, better known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Shaabi, “preserves the identity of security forces”.

Bolton calls on Al-Qaeda to stage more chemical attacks in Syria https://ingaza.wordpress.com/2018/08/25/bolton-calls-on-al-qaeda-to-stage-more-chemical-attacks-in-syria/

RT August 24, 2018
-by Eva Bartlett
In a move that was entirely predictable, the US administration is once again threatening to bomb Syria if there is a “chemical weapons attack”.

This was entirely predictable because that chemical attack script has been read out, with salty crocodile tears, fake concern, and mocked indignation by US talking heads over the years – since 2012, in fact, when former US President Obama himself drew his red line on Syria.

The latest script-reader to toe the chemical hoax line is President Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, who on August 22, stated: “…if the Syrian regime uses chemical weapons we will respond very strongly and they really ought to think about this a long time.”

Beyond the tattered veil of moral superiority that is US war propaganda, Bolton’s words were clearly a very public command to Al-Qaeda and co-extremists to stage yet another fake chemical attack.

Bolton’s statement was preceded by an August 21 France-UK-US (FUKUS) joint statement, likewise threatening further illegal bombing of Syria if a chemical attack in Syria occurred (based on evidence the US never has nor needs to reveal).

Recall that the last time they acted on such a threat, in April 2018, the US and its interventionist allies didn’t even wait for the Douma lie to be exposed, let alone for any mythical evidence to materialize, before they illegally bombed Syria with 103 missiles. The bombings occurred before the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) had a chance to visit the Douma sites in question.

It seems that FUKUS’ appetite for destroying Syria wasn’t satiated in April 2018, nor in the April 2017 bombings of Syria following unsubstantiated allegations around Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib.

Bolton’s assertions are backed by the usual suspects of the corporate media, fake human rights groups, “media activists”, and individuals linked to NATO’s Atlantic Council war propaganda think tank.

The over two decades-long dictator of Human Rights Watch (HRW), Ken Roth – who couldn’t even discern whether a video was Gaza’s Israeli-flattened Shuja’iyya or Syria when he tweeted about it being Aleppo in 2015 – is re-beating the Ghouta 2013 dead horse to scare would-be humanitarians around the world. The Western narrative of events in Ghouta been widely-discredited by journalists, and by the so-called “rebels” themselves.
