Syria's ‘gigantic conflict’ can't be resolved without Russia & others – Merkel
The lingering civil war in Syria has turned into a “gigantic conflict” that cannot be put to an end without backing from Russia and regional powers such as Iran and Turkey, German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted in a speech.

“While the fight against Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS] is going forward … but in the meantime, the civil war in Syria and the struggle against Islamist terrorism has turned into a regional conflict of gigantic proportions,” Chancellor Angela Merkel acknowledged on Wednesday as she spoke to German MPs.

The war that has gripped Syria for over seven years, cannot end “without Russia, Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and, basically, without Europe,” Merkel underlined, reiterating that “we do need a political solution in Syria.”

Interestingly, she struck a slightly different tone when talking Syria at an armed forces conference (Bundeswehrtagung) on Monday. Addressing the service members, the Chancellor compared the Syrian conflict to the Thirty Years' War, one of the longest and most destructive conflicts fought in Central Europe between 1618 and 1648.

The parties to the war were not able to negotiate a peace agreement “even in two months,” Merkel said, urging everyone to be patient about making peace in Syria. During that war, she argued, there were parties that “never spoke to each other, even during peace talks in [the German city of] Muenster.”

Merkel’s Wednesday statement comes at the time when Russia, Iran and Turkey are making joint effort to bring lasting peace to Syria. In early April, the three countries’ leaders met in Turkish capital Ankara, reaffirming that they oppose “any separatist plans aimed at undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, as well as the national security of neighboring countries.”

In February, the trio sponsored the Syrian National Dialogue Congress that took place in the Russian resort city of Sochi. The milestone event, which involved over 1,500 delegates representing various groups of Syrian society, laid the foundation for working on a new constitution and discussing reconciliation in Syria.

Despite EU and US sanctions on Moscow over Ukraine crisis, some top German officials advocated re-engagement with Russia in order to tackle pressing international issues. “We need Russia as a partner to settle regional conflicts, for disarmament and as an important pillar of multilateralism,” newly appointed Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in April, adding, “we are therefore open for dialogue and are trying to rebuild trust bit by bit if Russia is ready.”

Russian Airbase in Syria: US Supporting ISIL through SDF

Russian Airbase in Syria: US Supporting ISIL through SDF
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russia's airbase in Lattakia province, known as Humeimim, complained that Washington supports the ISIL terrorists through the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, as the SDF continues pressures against civilians in Deir Ezzur.

Humeimim announced on Monday that it has gained field reports disclosing that Washington is indirectly supporting and equipping the ISIL terrorists.

It added that Washington supports the ISIL through its illegally created allies, the SDF forces, who pursue disintegration of Syria.

Meantime, local sources in Deir Ezzur reported that the SDF forces have detained tens of civilians in the province, including women, children and the elderly, en route from Damascus to the region and prevented their move to the province.

A well-informed source reported on Monday that the US forces were building a new military base in a desert-like region in Eastern Deir Ezzur two weeks after the Washington-backed SDF claimed to have started their anti-ISIL operation in Eastern Syria.

The source said that the US military is building a new base equipped with advanced military tools and systems in Badiyeh (desert) al-Sha'afa in Deir Ezzur province, adding that the construction of the base has been justified as a move in support of the SDF against ISIL in Eastern Deir Ezzur, while SDF has been engaged in several confrontations against the Syrian army.

The sources further said that the US forces and the Washington-backed militias claim to be preparing for a possible operation against ISIL in the region, while they are spreading to the territories held by the Syrian army.

Europe to ditch US dollar in payments for Iranian oil – source
The European Union is planning to switch payments to the euro for its oil purchases from Iran, eliminating US dollar transactions, a diplomatic source told Sputnik.

Brussels has been at odds with Washington over the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, which was reached during the administration of Barack Obama. President Donald Trump has pledged to re-impose sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

“I’m privy to the information that the EU is going to shift from dollar to euro to pay for crude from Iran,” the source told the agency.

Earlier this week, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that the foreign ministers of the UK, France, Germany, and Iran had agreed to work out practical solutions in response to Washington’s move in the next few weeks. The bloc is reportedly planning to maintain and deepen economic ties with Iran, including in the area of oil and gas supplies.

Mogherini stressed that the sides should jointly work on the lifting of sanctions as an integral part of the historic nuclear deal. “We're not naive and know it will be difficult for all sides.”

The Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was sealed three years ago in Vienna between Tehran and the P5+1 powers (China, France, Russia, UK, US, plus Germany). The agreement saw decades-long international sanctions lifted in exchange for Iran curbing its controversial nuclear program. On January 16, 2016, the parties to the deal announced the beginning of its implementation.

N. Korea may reconsider Trump-Kim summit if US seeks surrender instead of talks
Pyongyang is not interested in any negotiations that envisage only unilateral denuclearization without guarantees North Korea won’t be left totally defenseless like Libya in case of aggression, deputy foreign minister has said.

Criticizing Washington’s demands for unilateral concessions and unconditional “nuclear abandonment,” North Korea’s first vice minister of foreign affairs Kim Kye-gwan recalled the eventual fate of Libya and said such negotiations style is unacceptable for Pyongyang.

“This is not an attempt to solve the problem through dialogue but rather the manifestation ...to force the destiny of the collapsed Libya and Iraq to our dignified state,” Kim said, according to KCNA.

“I doubt whether the United States really wants sound dialogue and negotiation,” Kim added, again noting that “the world is so well aware that our country is not Libya or Iraq.”

Denouncing the ongoing “sanctions pressure offensive” against the North, he accused Washington of misrepresenting North Korea’s “generosity and bold measures as an expression of weakness.”

“We will not be interested in talks anymore if (they) only try to push us unilaterally into a corner and force us to give up nukes,” he said. “It would be inevitable to reconsider whether to respond to the upcoming summit with the US.”

Last week, as a sign of goodwill, North Korea went on to release three Americans detainees accused of espionage – Kim Hak-song, Kim Sang-duk and Kim Dong Chul – removing one of the main obstacles ahead of the June 12 summit in Singapore. In another peaceful gesture, the North pledged to place a moratorium on nuclear and missile testing and in the spirit of transparency invited foreign journalists to watch the nuclear test site shutdown, scheduled for May 23-25.

Deputy FM’s remarks came a day after Pyongyang’s decision to cancel negotiations triggered by Max Thunder 2018 military exercises between the South and the US, which are viewed by the North as a rehearsal for the invasion of the DPRK and a provocation amid warming inter-Korean ties.

“This training is aimed at .. and is a deliberate challenge to the Panmunjom declaration and is a deliberate military provocation,” KCNA wrote on Wednesday. “This training... reflects the unchanging attitude of the US and South Korea to continue 'maximum pressure and sanctions' against us.”

Washington however still aims to hold the Trump-Kim meeting as planned and has defended the right to conduct drills with its Asian ally.

“We have not heard anything from that government or the Government of South Korea to indicate that we would not continue conducting these exercises or that we would not continue planning for our meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un next month,” State Department's spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters on Tuesday.

“I will say that Kim Jong-un had said previously that he understands the need and the utility of the United States and the Republic of Korea continuing in its joint exercises. They’re exercises that are legal; they’re planned well, well in advance,” she added.

Seoul ‘regrets’ its drills with US forced Pyongyang to cancel intra-Korean talks
South Korea has accused its northern neighbor of undermining the spirit of reconciliation after Pyongyang abruptly called off Wednesday’s high-level intra-Korean meeting in protest over joint US-S. Korean military drills.

“It is regrettable that the North’s unilateral move to postpone the high-level inter-Korean talks, citing the annual South Korea-US air drills does not conform with the spirit and purpose of the agreements reached between the leaders of the two countries,” the unification ministry said in a statement cited by news agency Yonhap.

South Korea urged Pyongyang to return to the negotiations table, stressing that Seoul remains “strongly committed” to the so-called Panmunjom Declaration, adopted during the historic summit of Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in on April 27.

A short flight to Armageddon: Trump & Netanyahu bringing us closer to end of times ---George Galloway
The biblical town of Armageddon is but a few miles as the bullets fly from the site of the latest Gaza massacre which has taken us further down the road to the end of times.

Its proximate cause was the latest Man-Child effort of Donald J Trump, this time to relocate the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv, with all the other embassies, to Jerusalem, half of which though annexed by Israel still constitutes Occupied Territory under international law.

It is a criminal offence to "make permanent changes" on "territory acquired by force" – which this territory was in 1967 when Israel seized it by force of arms.

Israel has made many such changes to Occupied Territories. For example, the Golan Heights still belongs to Syria despite the many illegal settlements built there, however much stolen oil is extracted there, or however many field hospitals for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and Al-Qaeda fighters Israel erects there. That like Jerusalem, the Golan has been illegally annexed makes no difference at all in law nor to every other government in the world. Except Trump's government.(以下略)

Turkey Plays Secret Role in Assassination Operations in Idlib
TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkey is excluding the commanders of Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra front) who oppose Ankara's new policies in the region in targeted killings by proxy militants.

As a rising wave of assassinations of militant commanders has started in Northwestern Syria, sources close to the terrorist groups in Idlib reported on Tuesday that the Turkish army is settling accounts with Tahrir al-Sham commanders who oppose Ankara's policies in Idlib.

They added that bomb attacks in the past few days were conducted by the Turkish intelligence agency, noting that Ankara has started assassinating Tahrir al-Sham commanders who oppose the new coalition of militants, mainly by Faylaq al-Sham and Free Syrian Army (FSA) militants.

Meantime, the FSA terrorist group in Idlib, Jeish al-Izza, Jeish al-Nasr and the Coastal Brigade 1, have declared plans to form a new coalition in Idlib with Turkey's financial support and under the command of Faylaq al-Sham.

Also, reports said that the Turkish army wants to dissolve Tahrir al-Sham by forming the new coalition to prevent the Syrian army's military operations in Idlib.

The Turkish army dispatched a new military delegation, accompanied by terrorist groups, to Western Idlib in Northwestern Syria on Saturday.

The Turkish convoy, including a military delegation, that was accompanied by terrorists entered Jisr al-Shughour region in Western Idlib.

There were several vehicles and a large volume of military equipment in the Turkish convoy.

Also, field sources reported that the Turkish delegation embarked on visiting Bedama and al-Najiyeh settlements in Western Idlib, adding that the army plans to set up a new truce monitoring point in the region.

In the meantime, local sources reported that the Russian and Syrian fighter jets pounded the positions of al-Turkistani terrorist group in Jisr al-Shughour region, inflicting major losses on the militants.

Also, a military analyst said that the Turkish troops plan to occupy Idlib and arrival of Ankara forces in Western Idlib is aimed at preventing the Syrian Army troops from carrying out anti-terrorism operation against Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) and other units of al-Turkistani group.

Russia: US Putting Serious Pressure on Iran Deal Participants
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that the United States is exerting significant pressure on remaining parties to Iranian nuclear deal.

"We see… that significant pressure will and has already been exerted on them [remaining parties to the nuclear deal with Iran], they [ the United States] have already put forward ultimatums about the need to stop trade with Iran, including deliveries to certain products, including the purchase of Iranian oil. They name terms − 60 days, 90 days. This is the plan for massive pressure," Lavrov said Tuesday, Sputnik reported.

He added that the EU partners said that they were taking steps not to depend on the United States in its trade and economic relations with Iran.

"One thing is clear: the United States, having withdrawn from the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan has lost all its rights with respect to this document, because there are a number of provisions that grant participants certain rights," Lavrov stated.

Russia stands for discussion by all remaining participants to the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear program regarding joint compensation measures for unilateral US sanctions against Iran, the top diplomat underlined.

"There are reasons for concern over recent events, I mean a nuclear deal with Iran," he said, adding that "this can seriously damage transatlantic relations. And if this happens, the consequences will be much broader than only Iran and the deal with it".

After US President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, the EU foreign affairs commissioner Federica Mogherini, as well as France, Britain, China and the other members of P5+1 have likewise voiced their concern about Washinton withdrawal from the Iran nuclear accord and expressed their commitment to the deal.
