Damascus Not to Hesitate to Respond to Israeli Airstrikes
TEHRAN (FNA)- Syria will counter all the attacks by the Israeli forces on its sovereign territory and will not hesitate to strike Israeli military targets as it has a right for self-defense, Syrian Ambassador to China Imad Mustapha said on Friday in light of recent airstrikes by the Israelis in Syria.

"Syria will continue to strengthen its air defenses, attempt to interject and down every missile fired by Israel, and target any Israeli air force asset that infringes on Syrian national airspace. Also, it will not hesitate to launch its own retaliatory attacks onto Israeli military positions in accordance with its undisputed right of self-defense and holding the aggressor accountable," Mustapha told Sputnik.

The diplomat denied Israel's statements that the attacks were not directed against the armed forces of Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that the recent military activities of his country against targets in Syria were not directed against the armed forces of Syria and hit them only because they had attacked the Israeli aircraft.

Bahrain Backs Israel's Most Direct Confrontation in SyriaTEHRAN (FNA)- Bahrain has expressed support for Israel after Tel Aviv hit dozens of military targets in Syria amid Syrian army advances against Takfiri terrorists and other foreign-backed militants.

In a rare expression of support, Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed al-Khalifa twitted that Tel Aviv had a right to "defend itself" after Israel said it carried out some 50 raids inside Syria, press tv reported.

Malaysian opposition wins for the first time since independence
A new generation of voters wanting change and fed up with political corruption vote Mahathir-led coalition to power.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - How do you topple a government that has been ruling a country uninterrupted for more than six decades? Well, if the latest events in Malaysia are anything to go by, here's how it's done.

Bring in one of the architects of that historic party, let's call him Mahathir Mohamad. It does not matter if he is 92 years old. Make sure he has had plenty of experience as head of that party and running the country, in this case, 22 years.

Team him up with his former deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, who's in jail mainly due to a precedent set by Mahathir, but that's all history now.

Anwar spearheaded the movement known as Reformasi, calling for political and economic change in 1998 as deputy prime minister to Mahathir.

His rising popularity threatened the leader, and he was subject to a lengthy trial that eventually landed him a prison sentence on charges of sodomy, which he denies.

"I guess lots of Malaysians find it deeply ironic that the push for reform sparked off 20 years ago because of a fight between Mahathir and Anwar," said Kean Wong, an analyst with newmandala.org, which provides perspective on developments in Southeast Asia.

"And it is now being helmed by Mahathir, who is campaigning against kleptocracy and other issues," he added.

Wong believes, despite Anwar and Mahathir's well-documented rivalry, it was necessary for the two forces to join together.

"I think Mahathir was instrumental," he said. "Having covered five elections and the key Reformasi ones over the past 20 years, it was obvious that Anwar Ibrahim could never quite access the rural Malay hinterland and heartland, a crucial vote bank, the way that Mahathir's aura and image could."
Seismic shift

Mahathir, the master political strategist, brought together a coalition of former opposition politicians he oppressed, punished and jailed while in power as prime minister.

He convinced them that together they could take down their common enemy, the then-ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional.

They ran a campaign denouncing the systems and government structure plagued by cronyism and corruption. A system that Mahathir created while prime minister from 1981 to 2003.

Barisan Nasional and its leader, former Prime Minister Najib Razak have been embroiled in one of the world's biggest corruption scandals known as 1MDB involving billions of dollars.

Iran Felicitates Malaysia on Successful Elections
TEHRAN (FNA)- Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi extended Iran's congratulations to Malaysia on its successful May 9 election which resulted in a shock victory for the opposition headed by 92-year- old Mahathir Mohamad.

"The massive turnout in the May 9 election in Malaysia and the active participation of the younger generation in the voting process indicated the vitality and political maturity of the Malaysian society," Qassemi said.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman congratulated the Malaysian people and Mahathir Mohamad as the country’s seventh prime minister in the peaceful and successful election, and said, "Iran and Malaysia would further expand their bilateral relations in all areas during Mahathir’s term in office."

Mahathir retook the post as Malaysia’s prime minister after a 15-year interval. At 92 years old, Mahathir became the world's oldest elected leader.

The Syrian Army air defense units intercepted two Israeli missiles fired at the Southern part of Damascus province on Tuesday night as well.

SANA reported that the air defense units intercepted 2 Israeli missiles fired at al-Keswah region in Southern Damascus on Tuesday night.

Meantime, al-Mayadeen news channel reported that over 50 rockets were fired at 4 Israeli military complex centers in occupied Golan, each including several military units, after Israel's attacks on Quneitra.

It added that tens of Israeli military centers, including the command center for technical and electronic tapping, the 9900 secret border headquarters to collect visual intelligence, the military command center for electronic warfare, the pin-pointing weapons watchtower, the regional command center for the Isreali army unit 810, the military brigade command center in Harmoun, the al-Shatawi center of Benastim winter warfare special unit, came under attack.

Tel Aviv has ordered troops to avoid disclosing any information about the target of the attacks.

MP: Rocket Attack on Israel Conducted by Syria, Not Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- A Syrian lawmaker on Thursday refuted Tel Aviv's claims that the attack on the Israeli military in the Golan was conducted by Iran, stressing that the barrage of rockets were sent by his own country's army.

As Tel Aviv and Western media have accused Tehran of launching rocket and missile attacks at Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights, Member of the Parliament Fares Shehabi tweeted on Thursday that "Iran denies firing any rocket at Israel! The Syrian army fired more than 50 rockets at Israel in response to continuous Israeli terrorism against Syria".

The Israeli army said it hit dozens of Iranian military bases in Syria overnight in responce to attack from within Syrian territory. But, according to battlefield reports, the Syrian Army has intercepted tens of incoming Israeli missiles, and then, reciprocated the assault with a barrage of rocket attacks on military centers in occupied Golan Heights.

The Syrian Army Command also said its air defense systems have managed to intercept and destroy the biggest part of Israeli rockets fired at military bases in the Arab country.

The Syrian Army Spokesman reaffirmed "the alertness of the army and readiness to defend the sovereignty of the homeland against any aggression”, stressing that attempts to support terrorism would prove futile.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that some 28 Israeli aircraft fired around 60 air-to-surface rockets in a massive overnight strike in Syria on Thursday morning, adding that Syrian air defense systems managed to intercept more than half of the missiles.

Israeli forces bombed the Syrian territory for two hours between 1:45 am and 3:45 am local time on Thursday, according to reports.

The Russian military said in a statement that “28 Israeli F-15 and F-16 planes" were involved in the assault, while “Syrian air-defense systems shot down more than half of the rockets as they repelled the Israeli attack”.

Tel Aviv said 20 rockets were fired into the Golan Heights early Thursday, and acknowledged that its well-known Iron Dome has only shot down 4 projectiles.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman, Lt Col Jonathan Conricus, told reporters that "several but not all" of the rockets were intercepted by Israeli defences, as minutes past midnight, approximately 20 projectiles were fired towards the line of IDF positions in the Golan Heights.

The military admitted that "Israel's Iron Dome missile defence system brought down four of the rockets".

Other sources mentioned 50 to 68 rockets were fired at Israeli targets after midnight in reprisal for earlier missile attacks on Syria.

Israel has seized the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and continued to occupy two-thirds of the strategically-important territory ever since. The Tel Aviv regime has built tens of illegal settlements in the area since its occupation and has used the region to carry out a number of military operations against the Syrian government.

The Tel Aviv regime has launched sporadic attacks against various targets on Syrian soil over the past few years, in assaults slammed by Damascus as attempts to boost terrorist groups who have been suffering heavy defeats in battle against Syrian government forces.

The Syrian army has also seized Israeli-made arms and military equipment from militants fighting pro-Damascus forces on numerous occasions ever since the war of militancy started in the country. Israel has also admittedly been providing medical treatment to the militants wounded in the Arab country.

BT to Axe 13,000 Jobs, Leave Central London HQ in Bid to Cut Costs
TEHRAN (FNA)- Thousands of well-paid London jobs have been placed at risk after BT said it will shut the global headquarters in the City where it has been based for more than 140 years.

The telecoms giant is axing a total of 13,000 management and back-office jobs over three years as part of a massive drive to cut costs and boost profits, Evening Standard reported.

It is the biggest jobs cull at BT for almost a decade and far larger than City analysts had been expecting.

In a highly symbolic move, chief executive Gavin Patterson ordered the HQ − which stands on the site near St Paul’s where Guglielmo Marconi made the first public transmission of wireless signals in 1896 − to be sold.

About 2,100 staff work in the Newgate Street premises known as BT Centre, which was rebuilt in the Eighties after the original Victorian building was badly damaged in the Blitz.

The company’s single best-known building, the BT Tower in Fitzrovia, is not affected by the shake-up.

Patterson said the cuts, which will save £1.5 billion a year, would help transform the company − now known for its coverage of Premier League and Champions League football − into “a lean and agile organisation” capable of taking on digital competitors. It also announced it will hire 6,000 people for engineering and customer service roles.

City analysts welcome the “long-overdue” move to throw off its legacy as “a bloated, lumbering beast” that dates back to its time as a nationalised monopoly.

BT was privatised and opened up to competition by Margaret Thatcher’s government in 1984.

Lee Wild, head of equity strategy at online traders Interactive Investor, said the streamlining plan “is the kind of action BT shareholders have wanted to see for years”, adding that “BT shares began a slow and painful decline two years ago, more than halving in value to make a five-year low last month.

“Part of the reason for BT’s decline is the inevitable heavy spending needed to upgrade the fibre network with potentially no incremental return,” Wild stressed.

BT shares fell 19p, or eight percent, to 220p after the announcement.

However, union bosses condemned Patterson’s announcement as “a devastating blow.”

“It is particularly disappointing as Prospect has been working closely with BT to ensure that the impact of organisational changes including restructuring and re-organisation have been thoroughly examined but this number sounds unrealistic,” Philippa Childs, National Secretary of the Prospect Union, stated.

BT bosses stressed that the company would keep “a reduced, but still significant”, office presence in central London.

Property sources said BT, which owns the freehold, could raise at least £75 million if it sold the prime City site, or even more if it gained planning permission for new offices.

“The question is what they do with the staff, and whether they decide to move East to Stratford where BT Sport is,” One added.

For First Time in Decades, Israel Comes Under Attack by Tens of Rockets from Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army intercepted dozens of incoming Israeli missiles and reciprocated the assault with a barrage of rocket attacks on military centers in occupied Golan, the first such response in decades.

Syria's state news agency, SANA, reported on Wednesday night that the Syrian army's air defense systems intercepted Israel's missile attacks on the town of al-Ba'ath; Israel had also earlier targeted the town with artillery fire.

According to the report, the Syrian army's air defense systems intercepted tens of Israeli missiles in the sky while a number of missiles hit the air defense and radar units as well as arms caches.

Meantime, al-Mayadeen news channel reported that over 50 rockets were fired at 4 Israeli military complex centers in occupied Golan, each including several military units, after Israel's attacks on Quneitra.

Other sources, including al-Alam news channel, also reported that the number of rockets fired at occupied Golan went over 68.

Al-Mayadeen also said that the Israeli Iron Dome defense shield has failed to intercept the rockets, adding that Tel Aviv has ordered troops to avoid disclosing any information about the target of the attacks.

Some sources also reported that Israel has attacked al-Kaswah region in Southern Damascus, but the attack was fully repelled by the Syrian army.

The Syrian Army air defense units intercepted two Israeli missiles fired at the Southern part of Damascus province on Tuesday night as well.

SANA reported that the air defense units intercepted 2 Israeli missiles fired at al-Keswah region in Southern Damascus on Tuesday night.

In the meantime, al-Jazeera TV channel reported that the Israeli missile attack was launched to target a militant base in Southern Damascus.

Also, al-Mayadeen TV quoted sources in Quneitra province as reporting that three Israeli missiles were fired from the occupied Golan Heights at Syrian territories on the same night.

The sources further told al-Mayadeen that the Israeli warplanes were flying over the Golan Heights, underlining the possibility that the fighter jets fired the missile at Syria's soil.

Damascus: Israeli Assault Indicates 'New Phase of Aggression' against Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Israel's latest move towards a "direct confrontation" indicates the start of a "new phase of aggression" against Syria, according to the Syrian Foreign Ministry.

"This aggressive conduct by the Zionist entity [pejorative for the State of Israel]… will lead to nothing but an increase in tensions in the region," Syrian news agency SANA cited an official in the Foreign Ministry as saying.

Damascus affirmed that the Israeli aggression on Syrian territories came within the framework of the aggressive approach of the Zionist entity and in response to the defeat of the terrorist groups.

Russian FM: Moscow Will Work Towards Ensuring US Sanctions on Iran Won’t Abolish Nuclear Deal
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said following talks with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on Thursday that Moscow will seek to make sure that US sanctions on Iran neither destroy the nuclear deal nor affect Tehran’s partners.

"We will seek to make sure that it does not destroy the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for the Iranian nuclear program. This is our common goal," he stated, adding that "besides, we will seek to ensure that there is no extraterritorial influence on Iran’s partners", TASS reported.

"The World Trade Organization has rules on this matter, so some non-judicial agreements may be made. As far as I understand, this is what our European partners want to reach with the Americans, they want to bargain something. I don’t know if there could be success," the Russian top diplomat noted.

Russia appreciates the Iranian leadership’s balanced response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the treaty.

"We appreciate the Iranian leadership’s balanced response to that decision (US decision to quit the JCPOA), because all likely implications of Washington’s step are to be evaluated. Any haste here would be counterproductive," Lavrov said.

The decision to remove sanctions in accordance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for the Iranian nuclear program is not subject to review, he added.

"As for unilateral US sanctions, we can do nothing in that regard. However, it cannot refer to sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council. That removal is not subject to review," Lavrov said.

"If Washington once again tries to make these restrictions exterritorial, it will significantly affect the situation in the region and relations between the United States and Europe, as well as between the United States and Russia. We will evaluate it from the standpoint of the World Trade Organization’s principles," Lavrov added.

The Russian top diplomat pointed out that one of the nuclear deal’s objectives was to facilitate the strengthening of the non-proliferation regime, stating that "these achievements are likely to face very significant damage," he noted.

US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday his decision to withdraw Washington from Iran’s nuclear deal with the world powers and re-impose sanctions against Tehran, while leaders of Germany, France, Britain, Russia, China as well as the European Union and the United Nations have condemned the move by the US, calling for the deal to be kept in place.

European Commission’s President: Europe Must Replace US as Leader after Washington Quits Iran Deal
TEHRAN (FNA)- The European Commission’s President Jean-Claude Juncker slammed Washington for turning its back on its own allies by quitting the Iran nuclear deal, saying the US under President Donald Trump has lost its influence as an international player and that the EU must replace it on the global stage.

“At this point, we have to replace the United States, which as an international actor has lost vigor, and because of it, in the long term, influence,” Juncker stated, suggesting that Europe should take over the US’ role as global leader.

He added that the United States is turning its back on multilateral relations and friendly cooperation “with a ferocity that can only surprise us”.

The European Union's Foreign Policy Chief has also reiterated her support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying she regrets the US President's decision to withdraw his country from the agreement.

"The JCPOA, unanimously endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231, is a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture and is crucial for the security of the region," Federica Mogherini said in a statement on Wednesday.

"As long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, as it has been doing so far and has been confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 10 consecutive reports, the EU will remain committed to the continued full and effective implementation of the nuclear deal," she added.

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog stressed Wednesday that Tehran is fulfilling its commitments under the nuclear deal with the world powers after the US President announced Tuesday that Washington pulled out of the agreement and re-impose economic sanctions on Iran.

"Iran is subject to the world’s most robust nuclear verification regime under the JCPOA, which is a significant verification gain," IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said, adding that "As of today, the IAEA can confirm that the nuclear-related commitments are being implemented by Iran".

Mogherini said the EU did not support the US President's decision to reinstate the bans and would work instead to make sure Iranian and European businesses can enjoy the freedoms provided under the JCPOA.

"The lifting of nuclear related sanctions is an essential part of the agreement. The EU has repeatedly stressed that the sanctions lifting has a positive impact on trade and economic relations with Iran. The EU stresses its commitment to ensuring that this can continue to be delivered," she added.

Hailing the deal as "the culmination of 12 years of diplomacy," Mogherini stated that the accord was working and the EU was determined to preserve it.

Envoy: EU to Increase Industrial Cooperation with Tehran after US JCPOA Withdrawal
TEHRAN (FNA)- Bulgarian Ambassador to Tehran Christo Polendakov announced that European states intend to boost their industrial cooperation with Tehran after Washington's decision to quit the internationally-endorsed 2015 nuclear deal.

The industrial talks between Iran and Europe will start in ten days, Polendakov said on Wednesday.

In this sensitive situation Iran and Europe should use the chances optimally to guard the interests of both parties, he added.

Polendakov also said that the Minister of Economy of Bulgaria Emil Lyubenov Karanikolov will have a visit to Tehran on Monday.

An economic delegation and three governor generals and parliament members will accompany the Bulgarian minister.

Bulgaria is the rotating head of the European Union.

The Bulgarian delegation is due to meet Iranian First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri, Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Masoud Karbasian and Governor of Central Bank of Iran Valiollah Seif.
