Huntsman urged Moscow to “do the right thing and join the rest of the world in condemning the Assad regime

Syrian strike is not conflict between superpowers, Russia was warned ahead – US envoy to Moscow
The US warned Russia ahead of the overnight strikes on Syria, US Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said, adding that the military action was not “about the conflict between superpowers.”

“Before we took the action, the United States communicated with the Russian Federation to reduce the danger of any Russian or civilian casualties,” Huntsman said, claiming that “all the targets were linked with the Assad regime’s illegal chemical weapons program.”

Huntsman urged Moscow to “do the right thing and join the rest of the world in condemning the Assad regime,” adding that Washington was still open for “cooperation.” The diplomat once again squarely pinned the blame for the alleged chemical attack in the town of Douma on the Syrian government, citing “large amount of credible reporting” on the incident.

The US and its allies attacked Syria shortly before the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) mission was expected to begin its work in the town of Douma. Both Syria and Russia welcomed the OPCW fact-finding mission to determine whether any chemical incident took place.

Western strikes on Syria ‘painful reminder’ of NATO’s Yugoslavia bombing – Serbian president

Western strikes on Syria ‘painful reminder’ of NATO’s Yugoslavia bombing – Serbian president
The American-British-French airstrikes on Syria are “a painful reminder” of NATO’s bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the Serbian president said. Both were done without UN Security Council mandate.

“For all of us who are over 18-19 years old, this [US-led] campaign is a painful reminder of the period which we witnessed,” Aleksandar Vucic said, speaking to RTS. The president was referring to the grim chapter in Serbian history when NATO launched a military operation in the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) during the Kosovo War.

The bombings, which lasted 78 days from March 23 to June 10, 1999, officially claimed at least 758 civilian lives. However, Serbian sources say the true figure may be up to five times higher.

Vucic noted that Serbia is a small country and it is not going to interfere in any conflict across the globe. Belgrade can now rely on the policy of military neutrality, the president said, adding that being on the side of the stronger power does not necessarily mean that this is the “side of morality and justice.”

The US and its allies launched the attack on Syria in the early hours of Saturday in retaliation for an alleged chemical attack by the Assad government in the town of Douma, near Damascus, last week.

Responding to the US-led intervention, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes were not sanctioned by the UN Security Council, and were carried out “in violation of the UN Charter and principles of international law.” In 1999, NATO justified its intervention without approval of the UN Security Council, accusing the government of then-President Slobodan Milosevic of ethnically cleansing the province of Kosovo.

The majority of Serbs today still say they would not accept an apology from NATO, while only 10 percent want to see their country become a NATO member, a recent poll shows.

‘UK Parliament, not Trump, should set its foreign policy’ – Sturgeon on British strikes in Syria
The UK Parliament, not US President Donald Trump, should define British foreign policy, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said, criticizing Theresa May’s decision to join the US-led military intervention in Syria.

The main question that the British PM hasn’t answered yet is how “this action” against Damascus “taken without parliamentary approval,” will halt the use of chemical weapons or bring “long term peace,” the Scottish National Party (SNP) leader wrote on Twitter. “UK foreign policy should be set by Parliament, not US President, (sic),” she stated.

According to Sturgeon, air strikes have not resolved the crisis situation in Syria so far. “Nothing I’ve heard persuades me they will do so now,” she said, calling for “an international strategy for peace,” not “a course that risks dangerous escalation.”

US-led coalition ‘manufactured consent’ with ‘fabricated’ gas attack - George Galloway on Syria
George Galloway says that both the alleged gas attack in Syria and subsequent US-led missile strikes this week were a “deliberate fabrication” meant to distract from a number of domestic scandals in the coalition member-states.

Galloway, a former MP-turned-broadcaster, spoke to RT.com about the latest US-led strikes in Syria, the pretext behind them and the potential consequences for both the Syrian people and the international community. Like many political commentators, Galloway questions both the timing and the authenticity of the reports on a gas attack in Douma outside of Damascus earlier this week.

“I believe that the entire Douma chemical weapons attack story is a deliberate fabrication… if Britain was involved in that fabrication I would be shocked but not surprised,” Galloway said. “It stands to reason that you can’t risk, even if the risk is small, the OPCW behaving with professional integrity and saying that there is no evidence of such a chemical weapons attack and certainly not one by the Syrian regime.”

“You can’t risk that so you have to, in Noam Chomsky’s words, ‘manufacture consent,’ for an attack and then launch the attack before that manufactured consent begins to dwindle away.”

UK claim of ‘humanitarian reasons’ for Syria strikes picked apart online
The United Kingdom’s deployment of the “humanitarian” card to justify its airstrikes on Syria has raised more than a few eyebrows, with opposition politicians, journalists and members of the public picking it apart on Twitter.

Speaking at the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, Britain’s UN ambassador, Karen Pierce, laid out the UK’s legal justification for their airstrikes on Syria. Pierce claimed that under international law the UK is allowed to take measures in order to “alleviate overwhelming humanitarian suffering.”

The UK government also published the legal position online. It says that three conditions have to be met to justify the intervention.

First, there has to be convincing evidence of extreme humanitarian distress on a large scale. Importantly, this must also be “generally accepted by the international community as a whole.”

It also must be objectively clear that there is “no practicable alternative” to the use of force if lives are to be saved. Finally, the use of force must be “necessary and proportionate” to the proposed relief of humanitarian suffering.

The news that the British government was citing humanitarian reasons for launching missiles sparked a flood of reaction on social media, with many people saying that it had not met any of the criteria it laid out.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon described the legal position as “thin” and said it is “not easy to see how [the] humanitarian crisis - the result of years of civil war - will be helped by air strikes.”
