US ‘rudely and insolently cheated Russia’ during Ukraine coup

US ‘rudely and insolently cheated Russia’ during Ukraine coup – Putin
The US used Russia to prevent Ukrainian leader Viktor Yanukovich from using his military against rioters in Kiev, and then ‘cheated’ Moscow by supporting an armed coup, President Vladimir Putin said.

The accusation refers to events that happened in February 2014, when Ukraine was gripped by violent anti-government protests. Yanukovich and three leaders of the opposition forces signed a power-sharing deal, which effectively amounted to a capitulation of the president.

The deal was enforced by three European nations: Germany, France and Poland. The accord lasted only a few days, however, as protestors – led by far-right nationalists – violated its terms and advanced unopposed by demoralized security forces. This forced Yanukovich to flee for his life.

“Here is something not publicly known,” Putin revealed in an interview. “At this very moment, our American partners called us and asked to do everything – and that’s almost a quote – to ensure that Yanukovich didn’t use the army, so that the opposition could clear the squares and governmental buildings on its own terms and go on towards the implementation of the agreement.”

The Russian president said Moscow agreed to this request, only to see the situation escalate the next day into a full-fledged armed coup. “They could have at least called us, do something, say a word! They could have said, ‘It was a case of agents stepping out of line, but we will fix it and turn everything into the bounds of the law,’” he said.

“Not a word! On the contrary, there was full support of those who committed this coup,” Putin recalled. “This is what they did with their own hands. How can they not support the current leadership now? They put themselves into a corner.”

After he was asked whether this was the first time Moscow had been cheated by Washington, Putin said this instance was “the first when the cheating was done so rudely and insolently.” It was the first time that the US had broken a promise this quickly, and would not even bother to explain their actions through proper channels, the president added.

“They should have understood that all this was happening near our borders. There are many people who identify themselves as Russians or consider themselves closely connected with Russia,” Putin said. “[Ukraine] is a country with which we have centuries-old special relations. We had an integrated production, energy and transport system. How can one not consider all those things?”

After the armed coup, the leadership of Ukraine chose to sever as many ties with Russia as it could, even though it hurt their own country. The painful break-up was justified by Kiev’s ambition to become part of NATO and the European Union – two goals that don’t seem much closer, four years after the ousting of Yanukovich. It did, however, cause significant damage to Ukraine’s economy, forcing millions of Ukrainians to seek low-paid jobs in countries like Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic.

“If they did it a little different, Ukraine would have benefited much more. Our co-operation links would not have been broken. Entire industries in Ukraine would have still existed,” Putin said. “All this destruction was done for what? For a ‘civilizational choice?’ Was that a choice of poverty or an opportunity to work illegally in European countries under the guise of a tourist visa?”

The remarks feature in a 90-minute documentary by journalist Vladimir Solovyov called ‘World Order 2018,’ which is based on interviews with Putin and a number of foreign dignitaries. The film is intended to show how the Russian leadership perceives the country’s place in the world today.

US driven by neo-imperialist ambitions in interfering in other countries' affairs – Lavrov

US driven by neo-imperialist ambitions in interfering in other countries' affairs – Lavrov
Rex Tillerson’s criticism of China’s policy in Africa is not exactly appropriate, says Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He also slammed the US for interfering in other countries’ affairs, pursuing neo-imperialist ambitions.

Lavrov’s statements came on Thursday after he met with Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Harare.

“I didn’t know that [US Secretary of State] Rex Tillerson is a specialist in Chinese-American relations,” Lavrov said. He added that “it’s not exactly appropriate” for Tillerson to speak about Africa’s relations with other countries, while a guest, especially in such “a negative way.”

Earlier on Thursday, Tillerson urged African countries to carefully weigh the benefits of Chinese loans at a news conference in the Ethiopian capital during his first diplomatic trip to the continent. “We are not in any way attempting to keep Chinese dollars from Africa,” he said.

By interfering into internal affairs of other counties, the US seems to pursue “neo-imperialist” ambitions, according to Lavrov. “We don’t share such an approach. I consider it ‘neo-imperialist’. And we will never pursue such policies,” he added.

He added that Russia “has never interfered in other countries’ affairs, despite Washington and other Western countries claiming the contrary on a daily basis.” He stressed, though, that “not a single fact of this has been presented.”

In the meantime, Lavrov denied the US State Department's claims about absence of US-Russia discussions on his possible meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

“I didn’t want to make a comment on this topic, but today the US State Department stated that there have been no discussions of our possible meeting with [Tillerson]. I can say that this is untrue,” he said, speaking at a press conference in the Zimbabwean capital, Harare.

Pentagon ‘disappointed’ by Putin’s revelation of new Russian nuclear deterrent
Top Pentagon officials have told US lawmakers that they were “disappointed” by Putin’s public announcement of Russia’s unmatched missile capability, lamenting that he will use it to further “intimidate” the US and its allies.

“I think the statements made by Russian president Putin while not surprising were nonetheless disappointing. While we have been aware of the development of Russia’s capabilities and watching with concern some of the development that has occurred in terms of Russia’s doctrine and exercise program, it is nonetheless disappointing to see that the president of the Russian Federation chose to feature these capabilities in a way that he did,” Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, John Rood, told the House Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, in a discussion on US Strategic Forces Posture and the Fiscal Year 2019 Budget Request.

Commander of the US Strategic Command, General John Hyten, added that “Putin’s statements are not surprising and only reinforce Russia’s commitment to develop weapons designed to intimidate and coerce the US and its allies.”

Last week President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia has developed six new strategic nuclear weapons systems, including an intercontinental nuclear-powered cruise missile, an intercontinental underwater drone and a maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicle, that were designed to render all US capabilities aimed at undermining the Russian nuclear deterrent obsolete.

Putin emphasized that Russia repeatedly offered compromises but never made a secret of its resolve to maintain a deterrent in the face of NATO expansions and growing US anti-ballistic missile capabilities – ever since the unilateral withdrawal by George W Bush from the Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002.

“Those capabilities have obviously been in development for quite some time. President Putin talked about their maturity. They are clearly not the capabilities that were developed in the last few months or the last year,” Rood admitted.

Rood, however, once again reiterated Washington’s mantra that US missile defense systems never intended to neutralize either the Russian or the Chinese strategic nuclear arsenal. “That has not been our plan in focus and the capabilities developed do not enable us to do that,” he noted.

At the same time, the Pentagon official reassured lawmakers that the US still has enough nuclear and conventional might to counter “revisionist powers” that seek to “reshape the world order and change territorial borders.”

Ex-CIA Chief: Trump ‘Unstable, Inept, Inexperienced, Also Unethical’
TEHRAN (FNA)- Former CIA chief John Brennan on Friday predicted "rough waters ahead", particularly on international issues, because US President Donald Trump is "unstable, inept, inexperienced, and also unethical."

In an interview with MSNBC's "Deadline: White House", Brennan told host Nicole Wallace that the President was "ill prepared" to take on the duties of commander-in-chief, particularly growing military aggression from Russia and North Korea, The Hill reported.

"It is no secret to anybody that Trump was very ill prepared and unexperienced in terms of dealing with matters that a head of state needs to deal with, head of government, and I think this is now coming to roost," Brennan said.

"[O]ur country needs to have confidence that we’re going to be able to deal with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, who is flexing his muscles once again on the military front, that we can deal with North Korea, that we can deal with these issues. And if we have somebody in the Oval Office who is unstable, inept, inexperienced, and also unethical - we really have rough waters ahead," he added.

The former CIA chief under former President Barack Obama went on to hit Trump for tweeting at actor Alec Baldwin over his "Saturday Night Live" impression of Trump rather than responding to Putin, who announced the previous day the development of missiles he claimed would render defense systems "useless."

"When I hear what Putin was saying just yesterday about the nuclear capabilities he has, the President of the United States is tweeting about Alec Baldwin this morning, I mean, where is your sense of priorities?," Brennan asked, adding that "I think a lot of Americans are looking at what’s happening with a sense of − this is surreal."

The Russian Leader told lawmakers this week that new intercontinental ballistic missiles developed by the country could reach almost any target in the world.

"I want to tell all those who have fueled the arms race over the last 15 years, sought to win unilateral advantages over Russia, introduced unlawful sanctions aimed to contain our country's development... you have failed to contain Russia," he said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders dismissed Putin's comments in a statement to CNN.

"President Putin has confirmed what the United States government has known all along, which Russia has denied. Russia has been developing destabilizing weapons systems for over a decade, in direct violation of its treaty obligations," Sandres stated.

Out-of-control Chinese satellite to strike Earth: What are your odds of being hit?
China’s out-of-control Tiangong-1 space station will likely come down to Earth next month. But anyone looking warily at the sky need not worry. The chances of being hit by a piece of space metal are quantum at best.

The Aerospace Corporation made the claim in a report posted to its website. While engineers acknowledge that the chances of debris being a threat to people are slim, there is a worry that the craft’s layered construction, which they liken to an onion, could make it harder for the 8.5-ton vessel to fully disintegrate in the atmosphere. “The probability that a specific person will be struck by Tiangong-1 debris is about 1 million times smaller than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot,” the report read.

Launched in 2011, the Tiangong-1 is China’s first ever space station and was designed as a pilot mission for the Tiangong-2 space laboratory. Two manned missions were completed to the Tiangong-1 in 2012 and 2013. The spacecraft has been steadily losing altitude since losing contact with Chinese mission control in 2016.

Nuclear alert? Belgium distributes millions of iodine pills, yet claims ‘no risk’
Belgium has started distributing iodine pills free for all citizens, claiming the measure was not prompted by any “specific risk.”

Pharmacies have begun receiving some of the 4.5 million boxes of iodine pills, which have been available for citizens for free since Tuesday, it was revealed during the presentation of a new plan in case on nuclear emergency.

The distribution of the medicine, which is considered beneficial for radiation-affected citizens, came as an updated emergency plan came into effect.

In 2017, the government launched a website, explaining to its 11 million citizens step-by-step what to do in case of a nuclear accident. The alert states that in emergency situations citizens should always follow recommendations of the authorities, which include seeking shelter, following evacuation orders and taking iodine pills.

One of the dangers of a nuclear disaster is the release of radioactive iodine (Iodine-131) which can be accumulated in the thyroid gland and cause thyroid cancer. Taking iodine pills – also known as potassium iodide – before or at the beginning of exposure can prevent thyroid cancer, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). It was Iodine-131 that caused around 5,000 deaths from thyroid cancer following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

According to Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon, Brussels is trying to “properly inform” the public, adding that all measures are solely precautionary and the nuclear facilities present no threat. “For now there is no specific risk with our nuclear plants,” Jambon said.

There are two nuclear power plants, operating seven reactors, in Belgium. The first plant is located in the village of Doel, near the northern Dutch-speaking port of Antwerp, and the second is in French-speaking Liege province in the south. Citing its ageing reactors, the country has decided to phase out nuclear power by 2025.

Belgium launched an initial series of emergency measures back in 1991 in case of a nuclear disaster, but only updated them in 2003, Benoit Ramacker, spokesman for the national crisis center said. With the latest plans, “citizens must also prepare to help themselves the day something happens”, Ramacker told RTBF in an interview.

The country has recently witnessed dozens of minor incidents linked to nuclear power sites. Thus, in 2017 local media reported that ultrasonic inspections detected a substantial number of new micro cracks in nuclear reactors at both Belgian plants. Back in 2014, the Doel 4 nuclear reactor was temporarily closed due to an oil leak. Authorities later confirmed that it was a case of sabotage.

Following the terrorism attack in Brussels in March 2016, media revealed that suicide bombers Khalid and Ibrahim El Bakraoui had been planning attacks on Belgian nuclear power stations, according to Dernier Heure report.

Belgium is not the first European country to issue iodine to its citizens. Back in 2016, the Netherlands government, also concerned about the ageing reactors across its border in Belgium, ordered millions of iodine pills for its own citizens in case of nuclear disaster.

The authorities of the German city of Aachen, some 70km from the Tihange plant, also started issuing free iodine tablets to some 500,000 residents, fearing leaks at facility.

‘US aid ends up with extremists’

‘US aid ends up with extremists’: Analysts alarmed over Pentagon’s 60,000-strong Syrian rebel force
Analysts have warned that US-supported groups in Syria often defect to extremists with their weapons. That's after it was revealed the Pentagon plans to spend around $300 million to train and equip a 60,000-strong army in Syria.

Commenting on the Pentagon’s plans to build, train and equip a massive ‘Vetted Syrian Opposition’ to fight Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria, a number of US-based experts told RT the move has nothing to do with combatting terrorism. Instead, US weapons and aid could easily land in the hands of Islamist extremists, as has often been seen in the past.

“In the past, some of the groups who were the recipient of US aid ended up either taking over or [being] defeated by some of the radical forces on the ground in Syria. Or some of them ended up joining the extremists and taking some of the weapons with them,” Edmund Ghareeb, a scholar at the American University in Washington, DC, told RT.

Another expert said an armed formation will help Washington tighten its grip over rebel-controlled parts of Syria, while stressing that the US’ “hostile military presence in Syria” has no legal basis. “They want to create… conditions in Syria where the country is still divided. The record of the US and the CIA’s operations in Syria is that the people they have supported all along have been extremists,” said Nicolas J.S. Davies, the author of ‘Blood On Our Hands: the American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq.’

He argued that the State Department and Pentagon “clearly want to push ahead with a plan to basically keep forces under their control in command of all Syrian territory east of the Euphrates river.”

While the US justifies its presence in Syria with claims it is fighting terrorists, the only area IS “has survived is the area that is under American and its allies' control,” Daoud Khairallah, a professor of international law at Georgetown University, believes.“One would wonder whether they are getting assistance from Americans for their survivability, ” Khairallah told RT.

Pentagon pays monthly allowance to rebels, seeks to establish large force in Syria

Following the virtual defeat of IS terrorists in Syria, the US appears to be trying to restructure its military presence in the war-torn country. In February, a fiscal year 2019 budget document mulled creating a new army out of elements of the so-called Vetted Syrian Opposition (VSO). The forces are “projected to total approximately 60,000 to 65,000” by October 2018, according to a report titled 'Justification for FY 2019 Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO)'.

The document explains that some 30,000 fighters will conduct “ongoing combat missions” against remaining pockets of IS in the Middle Euphrates River Valley (MERV), while another 35,000-strong contingent will form Internal Security Forces in liberated areas.

Creating the massive new military structure of rather questionable legality, roughly equivalent to the size of the Canadian armed forces, is an expensive endeavor. Besides seeking $250 million for border security requirements for areas outside of Iraq and Syria, the Pentagon is seeking some $300 million from US lawmakers to implement the creation of the new opposition bulwark machine that will be funded through the Syrian Train and Equip Program. Launched under the Obama administration in 2014, the program identified and trained selected Syrian opposition forces to fight IS.

The Pentagon plans to spend the bulk of the new funds on arming the forces. Nearly $50 million is allocated for buying AK-47s, PKM machine guns, as well as RPG-7 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Mortar launchers and sniper rifles are also on the menu next to hand grenades, different types of vehicles and tons of ammunition.

Washington plans to pay a monthly allowance to its force, in addition to providing the new force with uniforms, hygiene kits and medical equipment. “[The Department of Defense] will transition to a stabilization effort that will focus on support to local Internal Security Forces, who will receive stipends for their efforts to secure liberated territory and prevent the re-emergence of ISIS or its affiliates,” the document reads. “Currently, 10,000 established partner force personnel are being paid stipends. The individual stipend payments range from $200 to $400 per month.”

While Washington maintains that its goal is to defeat IS, Moscow has repeatedly questioned US intentions, especially as the American presence in Syria is viewed as a violation of sovereignty.

The Russian military last month asserted that the true US goal is to capture “economic assets” in Syria, warning that America’s presence constitutes a dangerous threat to the political process and territorial integrity of the country.

Syrian Army Deploys New Russia-Made Radar System
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russia-made small-sized radar system, 1L122-1E, was spotted operating under the Syrian Army’s control in one of the extended battleground of the war-torn country.

Earlier, Moscow declared that it is boosting Syria’s air defense capabilities in order to defend itself against hostile airstrikes, the AMN reported.

Recently, Russia has sent four 5th generation Su-57 stealth fighters to conduct temporary operations across the country.

The newly-deployed 1L122E small-sized radar in 1L122-1E configuration is designed for use as a radar data source for flight radar support at field and temporary airfields and for air defense needs.

Corbyn Urges May to Condemn Saudi War on Yemen As Bin Salman Visits

Corbyn Urges May to Condemn Saudi War on Yemen As Bin Salman Visits
TEHRAN (FNA)- The British opposition Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn called on Prime Minister Theresa May to protest Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen during the visit of the kingdom’s Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to London.

Corbyn said that May should tell bin Salman that Britain would stop providing arms to Riyadh, presstv reported.

Bin Salman’s three-day visit bagan with a lunch with Queen Elizabeth on Wednesday.

His stay in the UK included two audiences with the British Royal family, a briefing with national security officials, and a visit to the Prime Minister’s country residence.

“May should use this visit to announce the UK will no longer supply arms to Saudi Arabia while the devastating Saudi-led bombing of Yemen continues and make clear Britain’s strong opposition to widespread human and civil rights abuses in Saudi Arabia,” Corbyn stressed.

Saudi Arabia and its partners launched a war on Yemen in March 2015 to reinstall its former Riyadh-allied government. The military aggression has so far killed over 13,600 Yemenis.

The war is being led by bin Salman, also Saudi Arabia’s Defense Minister, with the help of the US and the UK.

May’s government has remained defiant in the face of growing pressure to stop arms exports to Saudi Arabia, defending the sales amid evidence of war crimes and civilian deaths in Yemen.

The UK has increased its weapons sales by around 500 percent since the onset of the Saudi invasion, according to a report by The Independent.

The UK has, so far, sold more than six billion pounds of arms to Saudi Arabia.

The weapons sold by Britain, which has also been providing logistical and arms support for the bombardment, include precision-guided bombs.

"Time and time again, UK ministers have turned a blind eye to Saudi Arabia's atrocious human rights record - barely mentioning the country's crackdown on peaceful opposition figures, or the alarming prevalence of torture, unfair trials and grisly executions,” Amnesty International UK’s Director Kate Allen said.
