Mediator in US-Kurd Talks with ISIL Gunned down in Northeastern Syria

Mediator in US-Kurd Talks with ISIL Gunned down in Northeastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Field sources in Northeastern Syria reported on Sunday that Ibrahim Ahmad al-Salama, a mediator in the talks between the US and ISIL terrorist group in Raqqa province, was killed by unknown gunmen.

The sources said that al-Salama was the mediator in the talks between the US forces and its allied SDF and the ISIL for the exit of the latter from the town of al-Tabaqa and Raqqa city.

They went on to say that al-Salama was assassinated by several unidentified gunmen who spoke Kurdish language on Thursday, adding that the assailants attacked al-Salama's house in al-Tabaqa and gunned him down after seizing his mobile and searching his house.

The sources said that al-Salama kept the voice of the talks between the US officers, Kurds and ISIL in Raqqa and al-Tabaqa.

Based on reports, al-Salama was first close to ISIL but started cooperating with the Syrian Democratic Forces and the US-led coalition after the ISIL retreated from Raqqa.

Local sources in Hasaka in Northeastern Syria said on Saturday that the US helicopters conducted heliborne operations in the village of Tuwaimin, 50km Northeast of al-Shadadi, in Southern Hasaka.

The sources said that 4 militants, including an ISIL security commander, were evacuated from the region in the operations.

The area where the operation took place is still occupied by the terrorist group.

Underwater magma chamber ‘could kill 100 million people

‘Worst case scenario’: Underwater magma chamber ‘could kill 100 million people’
A magma reservoir potentially hidden behind an underwater volcanic crater could have civilization-ending results if it ever erupts, according to Japanese scientists.

Experts from the Kobe University Ocean Bottom Exploration Center (KOBEC) have confirmed that a giant caldera or large crater exists in the Japanese Archipelago. The crater, measuring 32 cubic kilometers, is said to be the largest of its kind and the result of an explosive underwater eruption 7,300 years ago, according to their latest study.

Sitting between the Pacific and Philippine Sea Oceanic plates, Japan is a hotbed for seismic activity, which is why scientists are keen on updating methods of predicting natural disasters. The KOBEC team has been carrying out detailed surveys of the area and published their findings in Scientific Reports.

Located to the south of Kyushu, the Kikai caldera has very small chance of erupting over the next 100 years, reports KOBEC. However, the lead scientist studying the volcanic formation has given an ominous warning about the bubbling caldera’s destructive potential.

Although the probability of a gigantic caldera eruption hitting the Japanese archipelago is 1 percent in the next 100 years, it is estimated that the death toll could rise to approximately 100 million in the worst case scenario,” professor Yoshiyuki Tatsumi, head of KOBEC, told The Mainichi.

Super eruptions are rare, with Yellowstone Volcano Observatory scientist Michael Poland telling RT.com that the odds of civilization-ending explosion is “astronomically small.” However, scientists researching the Kikai caldera believe that a giant magma reservoir may lay hidden below the crust - and an eruption could be deadly.“An eruption like this would see over 40 cubic kilometers of magma released in one burst, causing enormous damage,” a KOBEC statement reads. “The mechanism behind this and how to predict this event are urgent questions.”

A team of scientists armed with underwater robots plan to return to the crater in March to determine whether the magma build up exists. It’s hoped that KOBEC and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology will be able to use the research to pioneer a way to predict caldera eruptions.

Turkish Army Launches Chemical Attack on Kurds in Northern Syria

Turkish Army Launches Chemical Attack on Kurds in Northern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Turkish Army launched a chemical attack on a Kurdish-held village in Afrin region in Northwestern Aleppo, Syria's state news agency reported on Saturday.

SANA quoted well-informed sources as saying that the Turkish army used poisonous gas against the Kurdish-held village of al-Mazinah in Sheikh Hadid region near the town of Afrin.

It added that six villagers are sufferring from severe breathing difficulties after the Turkish army's chemical attack.

Based on the latest reports two of the chemically wounded civilians are in critical health conditions.

Kurdish militants in Afrin repelled the Ankara-backed forces' attacks on Thursday and destroyed a Turkish army tank as the Operation Olive Branch continues in the region.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reported that they repulsed a fierce offensive by the Turkish army against Talat Balilkeh in Rajou region, killing a number of Ankara-backed militants and forcing others to withdraw.

The SDF added that they also seized a large number of weapons and military equipment after warding off the Turkish-backed militants' offensive against the village of Qouda.

They also said that a tank belonging to the Turkish army was also smashed and heavy tolls and damages were inflicted on the Ankara-backed militants during clashes in Bolbo

New Wave of Defections Pushes Kurdish Forces into Panic in Northeastern Syria

New Wave of Defections Pushes Kurdish Forces into Panic in Northeastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Local sources in Hasaka province reported on Saturday that the Kurdish forces are in panic as a large number of gunmen that had been forced to join the militias have defected from the group and fled the region.

The sources said that the Kurdish forces have been engaged in search for their defected gunmen in the Arab-populated villages of Tal al-Lahm, Tal Hamidi and Tal Khazouq in Northern Hasaka in the last two days.

The sources further said that the defected gunmen had been recruited by the Kurdish group by force.

They added that the Kurdish forces are in fear and panic after a large number of gunmen cut off ties with the group in Rajm al-Salibi East of the town of al-Shadadi.

In a relevant development in January the SDF arrested a number of young people in Northern Raqqa, forcing them to join the group amid fierce clashes between the Kurdish fighters and Turkish army and its allied militants in Northwestern Aleppo.

The sources said that the SDF embarked on arresting a number of residents in the town of Ein Issa in Northern Raqqa to force them to join the SDF.

The sources further said that the UN representative in the region was not allowed the Kurds to enter Ein Issa camp but tens of civilians were arrested by the SDF outside the camp.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Abdel Bari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm newspaper, stressed that drums of war are beaten in the region, and the Middle-East might soon come to witness events way beyond the Israeli fighter jet that was downed by the Syrian army in terms of size and importance.

Atwan referred to the future trilateral meeting between the Iranian, Russian and Turkish leaders, and described it as the start of resistance against the US forces and their allies in the region.

He also pointed to the US airstrikes against the Russian forces in Deir Ezzur, and said it is the first time that a number of Russian military forces have been killed in a direct US attack, which can be followed by Moscow's retaliation.

"We don’t think that Russian President Vladimir Putin would allow the Afghanistan scenario be repeated in Syria since Moscow has spent billions of dollars to attain its achievements in Syria."

"The region will witness major events in the next few days and weeks and the shooting down of the Israeli F16 fighter jet will be insignificant compared to them," Atwan stressed.

The US-led coalition carried out several airstrikes on Syrian forces in Deir Ezzur province earlier this month.

The US military was claiming that so-called anti-ISIL coalition forces repelled a threatening Syrian Army-led attack consisting of five hundred troops – backed by artillery, tanks, multiple-launch rocket systems and mortars against positions of Arab and Kurdish militias at energy fields near the town of Khasham on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province.

According to reports, more than 100 pro-government forces were killed in the airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition in Syria's Deir Ezzur.

Arab Daily: US Risking War with Russia in Quest for Syrian Oil
TEHRAN (FNA)- A leading Arab newspaper said Washington has come close to military confrontation with Moscow in a bid to find control over Syria's oil and gas fields.

The Arabic-language al-Akhabar daily referred to the recent US attacks on the Russian forces who fought alongside the Syrian army's 5th Brigade and al-Baggara tribal forces during their advance towards Omar and Koniko oil fields, and said before launching the offensive, Washington had conducted extensive surveillance operations and was aware of the identity of the forces it attacked.

The report reminded that the offensive on the pro-government forces in Deir Ezzur came after Russia's Humeimim airbase in Lattakia came under a drone attack and a Russian fighter jet was shot down by a missile fired by an unidentified militant group.

Al-Akhbar underlined that the developments indicate the increased possibility for military confrontation between the US and Russia in Syria.

The Americans have attempted to downplay their airstrikes against the Russian forces but Joseph Triovic, a military analyst, believes that it is the start of a contained war between the two sides.

Al-Akhbar further reminded that the US is using the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) who have occupied the country's oil and gas fields as its mercenaries, while it supports establishment of an independent Kurdish government in Eastern Euphrates, which are all meant to cut off the energy rich regions in Eastern Syria from the mainland to keep them under the control of Washington and its hirelings in Syria.

Syrian Army Deploys Heavy Flamethrower System to Idlib for Imminent Operation

Syrian Army Deploys Heavy Flamethrower System to Idlib for Imminent Operation
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army has deployed the TOS-1A, the latest version of the original Russia-made TOS-1 heavy flamethrower system, to Southern Idlib as the countdown has started for an imminent operation against terrorists in the region, a Russian media outlet reported.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted the Russian One website as reporting that the army has deployed TOS-1 A system also known as Solentsik to Southern Idlib to provide back up for the ground troops' imminent operation in the region.

The TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system is intended for direct fire support of advancing infantry and main battle tanks, and moves in their combat orders. It is designed to engage military personnel, fortifications and light armored vehicles. The heavy flamethrower system is generally similar to multiple launch rocket systems, however it fires different types of rockets and has a shorter firing range.

Sputnik further said that TOS-1A is one of the most powerful launchers with broader range worldwide, adding that the Syrian Army utilized the system in a battle in Idlib province in January.

It added that only one time fire of the system can cover an area as large as 4sq/km.

Military field sources reported earlier today that the Russian and Syrian fighter jets carried out joint combat sorties over terrorist-held regions in Southern Idlib, destroying a main base and killing or wounding a number of militants.

The sources said that the warplanes pounded a main base of the terrorists near the town of Tarmalah in Southern Idlib.

They further said that the base was destroyed and tens of terrorists, including a number of non-Syrians, were killed in the air attack.

A sum of 12 military vehicles of the terrorists were destroyed, the sources said, adding that several commanders, including Abu Omar al-Haskawi, were among the terrorists killed in the raid.

Tensions Raise Possibility for Clashes between Syrian Army, US-Backed Kurds in Deir Ezzur

Syrian Army Refuses YPG Proposal to Enter Afrin
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Army has refused an offer from the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG) to enter the Afrin region of Aleppo, well-informed sources reported on Friday.

The AMN quoted sources in Aleppo province as saying that the Syrian Army rejected the YPG offer because the latter refused to hand over their weapons to Damascus.

The Syrian Army has repeatedly requested that the YPG turn in all of their weapons before their forces would enter the Afrin region and fend off the Turkish-led incursion.

However, the Syrian Army maintains that they will continue to allow the Kurdish forces to resupply the area from within their own territory in Aleppo.

Earlier today, the Arabic-language al-Mayadeen TV quoted well-informed sources as saying that the Syrian government and the People's Protection Units (YPG) agreed on the deployment of the Syrian Army troops in Afrin region which has come under attack by the Turkish army troops and their allied militants in recent weeks.

Official Damascus has not yet made any comment on the revelations.

A senior Kurdish official said in late January that the Syrian army forces' deployment in Afrin was welcomed as war was ravaging between the Kurds and the Turkish army.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel quoted the source as saying at the time that the Kurds welcomed the Syrian army's presence in Afrin after the Syrian government proposed some solutions and made an agreement with them.

He said that the Kurds were prepared to defend themselves, adding, "We are not enemies of the Syrian government but we want to be a part of the political process in the country; we will also deliver our weapons to the Syrian army once we reach a political solution."

Meantime, the Iran-based Arabic-language al-Alam news channel quoted Behjat Abdou, the head of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) committee in Afrin, as saying that no agreement was made to deploy the Syrian army soldiers in Afrin, adding that the Kurds were highly prepared to repel the Turkish army attacks.

US, Kurdish Allies Virtually in Open Confrontation with Syrian Army in Southern Homs
TEHRAN (FNA)- The US and its Kurdish allies have come close to an open confrontation with the Syrian armed forces, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

“The US military continues to occupy a 55 km-sq area near Al-Tanf, which has become a shelter zone for the remaining members of ISIL,” Zaljarpva said, the AMN reported.

“The Americans conducted defiant actions on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River, where they came close to an open confrontation with the Syrian army seeking to support their Kurdish allies,” Zakharova added.

She pointed out that “the Americans have been provoking Turkey, sending arms convoys for the Kurds through its territory.” “In return, Turkey continues its Operation Olive Branch against the Kurds in the Afrin area. The fighting is fierce,” the Russian diplomat noted.

“Terrorists from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group continue aggressive provocations in the Western part of the Eastern Ghouta de-escalation zone, particularly shelling Damascus and killing civilians,” she added.

Turkish officials have many times stated that the delivery of weapons to the Syrian Kurds is one of the key reasons for deteriorating relations between Ankara and Washington.

Turkey says that the United States is making a mistake delivering weapons to the People’s Protection Units (YPG) as it believes they are linked to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara. Turkish authorities say that the weapons provided by the US may be used against Turkey.

Tensions Raise Possibility for Clashes between Syrian Army, US-Backed Kurds in Deir Ezzur
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army has sent a large number of forces and military equipment to Eastern Deir Ezzur after the recent US attacks on its positions in the region, field sources said, adding that tensions have raised the possibility of clashes between the army forces and Kurdish militants backed by Washington.

The sources reported on Thursday that the Syrian army has dispatched a large number of forces and military equipment to Wadi al-Forat region in Deir Ezzur.

They added that the Syrian army soldiers have strengthened their positions in the region, patrolling the Western banks of the Euphrates river.

Certain field sources also confirmed that the US-backed Kurds are on alert and have reinforced their positions, adding that there is a high possibility for clashes between them and the Syrian army.

Meantime, the Arabic-language al-Masdar al-Arabi news website reported that the Syrian army troops are preparing for an offensive against the US-backed Kurdish militants in Deir Ezzur.

The Syrian army sent a large number of forces and equipment to the region after its positions in Eastern Deir Ezzur were twice attacked by the US forces in the past few days.

A US Army attack drone destroyed a Syrian Army tank in Eastern Deir Ezzur to become the second raid in the current week by the US air force on the Syrian army, a media outlet reported on Wednesday.

The Arabic-language website of Reuters quoted a US official as reporting that an MQ-9 drone of the US forces destroyed a Russia-made T-72 tank of the Syrian Army in Deir Ezzur on Sunday.

Also, the US army announced that it destroyed a tank that had entered the fire range of the US-backed militants.

In the meantime, a US official, who requested anonymity, disclosed that at least two pro-Syrian government forces were killed in that attack.

The drone attack on the Syrian tank was the second US attack on Damascus forces in last week.

The US-led coalition carried out several airstrikes on Syrian forces in Deir Ezzur province last Thursday.

Turkey Urges US to Remove Leading Force from SDF Amid Afrin Operation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkey's Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli said that he asked the Pentagon's head Jim Mattis to remove the Syrian Kurdish YPG units from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which the US is backing in the fight against the Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist group in Syria.

Mattis in his turn said after the meeting with his Turkish counterpart that Washington stands with Turkey on its legitimate security concerns, Sputnik reported.

The US Defense Secretary also added that the two NATO allies were "finding common ground", though there are still "areas of uncommon ground, where sometimes war just gives you bad alternatives to choose from."

The talks between the US and Turkey defense ministries were "honest and transparent", according to Mattis.

On Tuesday, Mattis stated that the US would continue to train local security forces in Syria and maintain a military presence in the country as long as required to defeat Daesh, though Washington was aware of Ankara's concerns.

Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the US to "stop this theater with Daesh in Syria", adding that a decision by the US to continue to fund the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia would affect Turkey's decisions.

Tensions between the US and Turkey has heightened amid Ankara's ongoing operation against some Kurdish groups in Syria's Afrin, as the two NATO allies define terrorists in different ways.

Turkey launched its offensive in Syria after the news broke that the US was planning to build a 30,000-strong force on the northern Syrian borders, which would consist from the SDF largely dominated by the YPG fighters. Washington does not consider the Kurdish YPG to be a terrorist organisation, whereas Ankara suspects the militia of ties to the Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK), which is listed as a terrorist group by both Turkey and the US as it wages a violent insurgency in Turkey, demanding autonomous status.

Turkey has repeatedly urged the US to stop sypplying the YPG units in Syria with weapons, as Washington provides support to Kurdish militants fighting in Syria against terrorist groups. In January, Washington noted that it did not provide any training or arms to the Kurds located in the Afrin area, as the US was focused on the Euphrates River Valley operations to the South and to the East.

Al-Arabiya Surrenders UK Broadcasting License over Coverage of QNA Hacking
TEHRAN (FNA)- Al Arabiya News Channel has surrendered with immediate effect its license with the UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom, which received a complaint over the channel's involvement in covering the crime of hacking Qatar News Agency (QNA), British law firm Carter-Ruck said.

QNA had hired Carter-Ruck to submit a complaint at Ofcom against Al-Arabiya and Sky News Arabia for broadcasting fabricated and false statements attributed to HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani after QNA's website was hacked on May 24, 2017, a crime that the four countries of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt used to justify the siege that they have been imposing on Qatar since June 5, 2017, thepeninsulaqatar reported.

Based on the complaint, Ofcom, which regulates the conduct and output of broadcasters who broadcast in the United Kingdom and elsewhere within the European Union, had announced that it was taking measures to handle such issues.

The surrendering of the license by Al-Arabiya, a Dubai-based satellite broadcaster owned by Saudi businessmen, was to avoid an investigation which could have resulted in the imposition of substantial fines and other penalties and even in the revocation of the license due to previous violations.

Al-Arabiya had previously been heavily sanctioned by Ofcom in relation to a material broadcast in 2016. On that occasion, Ofcom found Al-Arabiya to have breached its regulatory obligations to treat subjects fairly and justly and not to intrude upon privacy in unwarranted circumstances. Among other sanctions, Ofcom imposed a fine of GBP 120,000.

Following the surrender of its license, Al-Arabiya is no longer able to broadcast in the UK or elsewhere in the European Union. In addition, it has placed itself outside the community of those responsible broadcasters who, by placing themselves within a reputable regulatory regime such as that administered by Ofcom, ensure that they comply with codified industry standards relating to bias and fairness.

The move also confirms that Al-Arabiya has been a vehicle for the propaganda of the four siege countries in terms of broadcasting fake news against Qatar.

‘Shocking’: Afghans make 1.17mn human rights abuse claims in 3 months

‘Shocking’: Afghans make 1.17mn human rights abuse claims in 3 months
The International Criminal Court (ICC) began collecting submissions of alleged war crimes from Afghan citizens three months ago. Since then, it has received over 1.17 million allegations, according to a report by The AP.

The statements were collected between November 20, 2017, and January 31, 2018, by organizations based in Europe and Afghanistan who subsequently submitted them to the ICC. Claims of atrocities carried out by the Taliban, Islamic State, IS (formerly ISIS), Afghan security forces, government-affiliated warlords, the US-led coalition, as well as foreign and domestic intelligence agents were all submitted.

The total number of Afghans seeking justice could reach the millions but has yet to be definitively determined, as one statement might be made on behalf of multiple victims, while one organization may be responsible for thousands of such statements.

"It is shocking there are so many," Abdul Wadood Pedram of the Human Rights and Eradication of Violence Organization said, as cited by The AP, noting that in some instances, whole villages had given statements. "It shows how the justice system in Afghanistan is not bringing justice for the victims and their families."

Pedram has had to go into hiding on multiple occasions over security concerns emanating from his work. Several warlords who rose to prominence amid the power vacuum left behind in the wake of the 2001 US-led intervention against the Taliban are among the alleged war criminals reported to the ICC.

"The warlords are all here. You have to be very careful," Pedram said. "In the morning, I kiss my little son goodbye, I kiss my wife goodbye because I don't know what will happen to me and when, or if I will see them again."

The ICC is the world's first permanent court established specifically to investigate and prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. However, the ICC can investigate alleged crimes committed in Afghanistan only after May 2003, when the government ratified the Rome Statute which established the ICC.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda has reportedly been seeking authorization to begin an investigation since last November. She told The AP the court has been looking into possible war crimes in Afghanistan since 2006.

Bensouda said in November 2017 that "there is a reasonable basis to believe" that the Taliban, the Haqqani network (an Afghan guerrilla insurgent group), the Afghan National Security Forces, National police and the country's spy agency, the NDS, had all committed some form of war crime. Bensouda also added that evidence existed of war crimes perpetrated "by members of the United States armed forces on the territory of Afghanistan, and by members of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in secret detention facilities in Afghanistan," which were operating mostly between 2003 and 2004.

Bensouda also decried the "near total impunity" enjoyed by armed forces, both foreign and domestic, operating in Afghanistan. The US is not a member state of the ICC but American citizens can be charged with atrocities committed in member countries. The US State Department said at the time of Bensouda's announcement that it opposes the court's involvement in Afghanistan.

A man named only as Shoaib spoke to the Associated Press about his own alleged experience of war crimes in Afghanistan. His father was reportedly travelling through the Ghor Province in 2014 when his bus was stopped by a band of gunmen. All of the passengers were forced off the bus and ordered to show their identity cards. The 14 Shiites among them were then summarily executed one by one.

A Taliban commander was later arrested in connection with the incident but no trial or punishment were ever reported despite widespread media coverage and national outrage. "Everybody knows that they have connection in the government," Shoaib said. "I think in Afghanistan, if you have money, then you can give it to anyone, anywhere, to do anything."

The AP report comes just one day after the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) released its annual report on civilian casualties in the country. There were more 10,000 civilian casualties reported in 2017 with a total of 3,438 people killed and 7,015 wounded.

Roughly two-thirds of all casualties were attributed to anti-government forces: 42 percent to the Taliban, 10 percent to IS and 13 percent to other anti-government elements.

ICC judges in The Hague have yet to determine whether they will launch a war crimes investigation. There has been no guidance given on when such an investigation might be launched.

RT.com has contacted Human Rights and Eradication of Violence Organization (HREVO) and the ICC for comment.

Tillerson in Ankara pledges limited weapon supplies to SDF, says Manbij ‘priority’ in Syria
Washington and Ankara are making an effort to mend relations, strained over the former’s support of Kurdish forces in Syria. During a visit to Ankara, the US secretary of state said the ties were “too important.”

Rex Tillerson tried to reassure Ankara over US’s involvement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), much of which is comprised of Kurdish YPG, outlawed in Turkey as a terrorist organization.

“We take it seriously when our NATO ally says it has security concerns,” Tillerson said at a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on Friday. “We have always been clear with Turkey that the weapons provided to the Syrian Democratic Forces would be limited, mission specific, and provided on the incremental basis to achieve military objectives only.”

Both Tillerson and Cavusoglu that the countries have found themselves at “a crisis point,” and have agreed to address “critical issues” in the bilateral relations.

“We've decided, and President Erdogan decided last night, we needed to talk about how do we go forward? The relationship is too important,” Tillerson said.

He said that the "priority” was to address the situation around Manbij, which Turkey earlier threatened to target in its offensive in Syria. The city is controlled by Kurds and is used by the US military to support Kurdish operations against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS).

Ankara now demands Washington to give guarantees over the withdrawal of the Kurdish YPG forces from Manbij, which could lead to Turkey and US joint deployment in the area.

“What is important is who will govern and provide security to these areas,” Cavusoglu said. “We will coordinate to restore stability in Manbij and other cities. We will start with Manbij. After YPG leaves there, we can take steps with the US based on trust.”

On Thursday, Turkish Defense Minister Nurettin Canikli asked Washington to end its support for Kurdish fighters and to remove them from the US-backed SDF. Canliki said he told his US counterpart, Jim Mattis, that Washington's support for the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia has helped Kurdish rebels in Turkey “grow and strengthen,” posing an increasingly “existential” threat to Turkey.

Russia: US Continues to Supply Kurds with Arms, Provoking Turkey

Russia: US Continues to Supply Kurds with Arms, Provoking Turkey
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the developments in Syria, including the issue of arms supplies to Kurds from the US.

"The Americans have sent the Kurds convoys with weapons through the territory of Iraq, provoking Turkey. Turkey, in turn, has continued its military activity against Kurds in the Afrin area in Northwestern Syria as part of the Operation Olive Branch," Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday, noting that the ongoing battles between Turkish troops and Kurds were fierce, RIA Novosti reported.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is expected to head to Ankara, addressed the issue after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, stressing that the US has "never given heavy arms to the YPG (the People's Protection Units)", a Kurdish militant group that Ankara has deemed to be a terrorist organization.

The Turkish officials have repeatedly claimed that the arming of the Syrian Kurds is one of the major factors that have contributed to the deterioration of Ankara-Washington relations.

Ankara has claimed that the US was making a mistake in supplying weapons to the YPG. Turkish officials said the YPG is linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is designated as a terrorist organization in the country, and claims that the American weapons they received could be directed against Turkey.

The tensions between the US and Turkey have been on the rise as the Turkish Armed Forces launched the operation against Kurdish forces in Afrin on January 20. The decision to launch the military operation was made in the wake of a US decision to establish a border force that would involve Kurdish militias, including YPG.

Damascus has strongly condemned Ankara's actions, with the Syrian Foreign Ministry calling them a violation of the country's sovereignty.

Syria’s Representative to UN: Main Task of US-Led Coalition Is Supporting Terrorists in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the Syrian people are the only ones to determine the future of their country, reaffirming Syria’s commitment to the final statement of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi.

Al-Jaafari made his remarks during a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the situation in Syria, pointing that the US presence in Syria violates the UNSC Resolution No. 2254 which provides for preserving Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, not to mention the 2nd article of the UN Charter which stipulates for respecting sovereign equality of all UN members, mutual non-use of military force, and non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs, SANA reported.

He regretted that the UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, in his briefing, has overlooked the presence of US and Turkish forces on the Syrian territory, noting that there is no provision in the UN Charter that justifies intervention in any state’s internal affairs.

Al-Jaafari said that 29 resolutions on Syria have been adopted by the UN Security Council and all of them stress all parties’ commitment to the Syrian State’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in accordance with the UN Charter and its principles, adding that “We have the right to question the actions taken by the UN Security Council to guarantee these objectives set by the founders in order to achieve peace, security and stability in the world.

He noted that Syria is not the first victim of some UNSC member states’ violation of the UN Charter and the international law, but the suffering of Syria came as a result of the deliberate blindness to previous violations committed over decades.

Al-Jaafari questioned the measures taken by the UN Security Council when some of the UN member states undermined its Charter and deprived the Palestinian people of their right in establishing a Palestinian state with al-Quds as its capital, not to mention the invasion of Iraq, the destruction of Libya, the unlimited support to international terrorism and flagrant intervention in the internal affairs of other member states and the looting of national assets as is the case in several African states.

In addition to their violations of the UN Charter provisions to implement their agendas at the expense of the Syrian people and their future, the US, France and Britain have made every effort to undermine Syria and its people and exploit media to reach this end, distort the reality of what is happening and misleading the public opinion regarding the humanitarian suffering of civilians due to the practices of armed terrorist groups which used them as human shields and controlled schools and hospitals and turned them into military points, jails for abductees and bases for firing mortar shells on safe areas, noting that in the last 20 days Damascus has been targeted with 1000 shells, al-Jaafari stressed.

He referred to the takfiri Wahhabi fatwas issued to shed the Syrian blood, the facilitations provided to secure the entry of tens of thousands of terrorists and mercenaries from more than 100 states which are UN members through the borders, the establishment of training camps in the neighboring countries and the attempts to introduce these terrorists as “moderate opposition”.

Al-Jaafar said that the former Qatari Prime Minister acknowledged that the states which support terrorism have spent USD 137 billion to assist terrorists, meantime the former US ambassador in Damascus also admitted that the US spent USD 12 billion to support terrorists and change the Syrian government between 2014 and 2017, adding that WikiLeaks uncovered the US anti-Syrian policies since the US-British invasion of Iraq.

He added that the same states supplied the terrorist groups with toxic chemical materials to be used against the innocent civilians after which they fabricated incidents and information and submitted false testimonies to mislead the investigative mechanism and accuse the Syrian government in order to carry out its aggression.

He said that the Syrian government has submitted 136 letters containing valuable information about the terrorists’ possession and use of toxic chemicals, but none has read them.

Al-Jaafari added that these states attempted to justify the repeated attacks conducted by the so-called US-led international coalition on Syrian areas, the latest of which is the illegitimate attack on Syrian popular forces fighting Daesh (ISIS or ISIL) terrorist organization in the East Northern countryside of Deir Ezzur on February 8 which clearly shows the reality of this coalition and Washington’s role in supporting Daesh terrorists, reminding the UN member states of the US-led international coalition’s airstrikes on Syrian military positions in al-Thardah Mountain in Deir Ezzur and their deliberate destruction of 90% of Raqqa province.

He affirmed that the main task of US-led coalition is supporting terrorists in Syria.

He said that these states once again violated the UN Charter provisions when they stood silent watching the repeated Israeli attacks on the Syrian territories, the most recent of which is the Israeli aggression on February 10, 2018 and it was justified by the US representative to be in retaliation for Iran deploying a drone over the occupied Palestine which is a groundless allegation.

This is not the first time that Israeli occupation forces launch an attack against Syria’s sovereignty. It has always breached the sovereignty of my country till its warplane was recently shot down by a Syrian missile over the Occupied Palestinian territories, he added.

Another evidence on these countries’ violations is preventing the UN Security Council from issuing statements to condemn terrorist organizations’ attacks targeting with 1000 rocket and mortar shells the residential neighborhoods, suburbs, diplomatic missions, service facilities and churches in Damascus and other cities, claiming the lives of dozens of civilians and injuring hundreds of others.

They circulated the term of besieged areas when tackling the situation in the Eastern Ghouta in the countryside of Damascus and overlooked the reality that the inhabitants of the Eastern Ghouta are besieged from inside by the armed terrorist groups which use the civilians as human shields, seize humanitarian assistance materials and sell them to needy people just like what happened in the Eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo city.

The US decision on military intervention in Syria was illegitimate and unilateral under pretext of fighting Daesh terrorist organization, then Washington declared that it wants to establish military bases to preserve the strategic security and the security of its allies and later on it made clear that they are in Syria to create armed militias which will control oil, gas and water resources and establish a mini-state, after which it said that the US will maintain its presence in Syria even after the eradication of Daesh, al-Jaafari said, adding that the same justifications were used by the US to preserve its presence in Iraq.

On the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, al-Jaafari welcomed Russia’s efforts, particularly President Vladimir Putin, to host and organize this event, noting that the Congress has proved once again that the political process in Syria would not be possible unless it is led by the Syrians themselves without any foreign intervention.

He stressed that the Sochi Congress’ final statement forms a fundamental basis for the political track and a solid foundation for any upcoming dialogue or talks.

Al-Jaafari reiterated Syria’s adherence to any political solution that helps stop the shedding of Syrian blood, preserve its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and guarantee the Syrian people’s right to determine the future of their country through intra-Syrian dialogue.

Syria’s UN Envoy Slams US for Supporting ISIL

TEHRAN (FNA)- Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and head of the Syrian government delegation to the intra-Syrian talks Bashar al-Jaafari accused the United States of supporting ISIL.

"How can a country like the United States, which has given birth to Islamic State, which has been supporting and defending Islamic State, which continues to fight for Islamic State, a country, which has been violating Syria’s sovereignty by its military presence in our country and negating international laws and conventions, how can a country, which has the blood of the Syrian people on its hands, speak about a political solution and Syria’s future?," he said in Vienna, TASS reported.

He voiced criticism of each of the five nations (the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Saudi Arabia and Jordan), which had come out with an unofficial document on Syrian settlement at a meeting in Washington in January.

According to al-Jafaari, the UK and France are following the United States "like a blind man following another blind man." Jordan, in his words, has opened its borders to terrorists to become "a place for seven training camps for terrorists." As for Saudi Arabia, he called it ironically "a pinnacle of democracy and a beacon of freedom in the East."

Neither of these five has the right to dictate its will to the Syrian people, he added.

Japan, US ‘to Pressure North Korea’ Amid Inter-Korean Rapprochement

Japan, US ‘to Pressure North Korea’ Amid Inter-Korean Rapprochement
TEHRAN (FNA)- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and United States President Donald Trump reportedly agreed to continue to pressure North Korea over its weapons programs even as Pyongyang engages in nascent dialog with its main rival Seoul.

Abe and Trump agreed in a telephone conversation that there would be “no meaningful dialog” unless North Korea agreed on “complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization”, according to a statement by the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Thursday, presstv reported.

After the phone conversation, which reportedly lasted over an hour, Abe told reporters that he and the US President had affirmed they would keep up the pressure on North Korea until it entered into negotiations and abandoned its nuclear program.

“Dialog for the sake of dialog would be meaningless,” the Japanese Prime Minister said, adding that “We talked thoroughly about what we should do from here on to make the denuclearization of North Korea a reality.”

North Korea has been engaging in a rapprochement with the South since January this year. The Winter Olympics 2018, which are being hosted by the South, have provided an opportunity for the two sides to put aside long-running hostilities; and there is hope that the thaw would continue after the Games.

By courting Seoul, Pyongyang has sidelined the US − which has long portrayed itself as a major player in the dispute on the Korean Peninsula − and Japan, a close follower of US policy.

Abe said he and Trump had reaffirmed the Tokyo-Washington alliance against Pyongyang. Since defeat in World War II, Japan has been reliant on the US for its security.

South Korea hosted a high-ranking delegation from the North, including the North Korean leader’s sister, after Pyongyang expressed willingness to participate in the Olympic Games early in January.

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un, who thanked the South for its hospitality during the Games, then invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang for a summit later this year, pledging efforts to continue the reconciliation process.

Abe held talks with President Moon prior to the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympic Games and said the two countries would continue to work with the US in maximizing pressure on North Korea.

Saudi Arabia boosts investment in Russian economy
Saudi investments in Russian projects has exceeded $2 billion, according to the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Kirill Dmitriev.

“More and more Russian companies are investing in Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia is investing in Russia. Saudi Arabia's investment in Russia has already reached more than $2 billion,” Dmitriev said.

A Sovereign Fund of Saudi Arabia, Public Investment Fund (PIF), announced in 2015 its intention to invest $10 billion in the Russian economy through partnership with the Russian fund.

The funds have invested in petrochemicals, energy, transport infrastructure and retail. Saudi Arabia also expressed interest in working with Russia in the railway industry, space exploration and peaceful nuclear energy.

Russian banks and a joint Russia-China investment fund are eager to participate in Saudi company Aramco’s initial public offering (IPO). Riyadh plans to sell about a 5 percent stake in its national oil company in a record listing.

“We have a Russia-China investment fund, and through that Russia-China investment fund we see a major interest in the Aramco IPO from a number of leading Chinese institutions,” Dmitriev said.

“We see significant interest to invest in the Aramco IPO from Russia, from China, and we believe that this is very good for, once again, thinking jointly about oil.”

The RDIF and Aramco also plan to invest up to $1 billion in Russia’s largest independent driller, Eurasia Drilling.

Russia bidding to construct 16 nuclear power plants in Saudi Arabia
Russian state corporation Rosatom is interested in building Saudi Arabia's nuclear infrastructure, according to Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak.

“The nuclear industry is an important part of our cooperation,” said Novak at a meeting of the intergovernmental commission, adding “Rosatom could take part in the creation of a nuclear cluster in Saudi Arabia, including the construction of 16 modern nuclear reactors.”

Moscow and Riyadh have inked an agreement on energy and climate and a memorandum of understanding and cooperation in the energy sector.

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) are considering investing in more than 20 projects worth over $10 billion, Novak said. As of now more than $1 billion has been spent on nine joint projects.

Russian Railways is negotiating the construction of two railroads in Saudi Arabia. The company is actively developing cooperation with Middle Eastern countries, having already agreed to electrify Iranian rail track.

The two countries are also discussing supplies of Russia’s Kamaz trucks as Riyadh has expressed an interest. Kamaz is Russia’s largest truck maker and plans to increase exports by almost five percent to 6,500 vehicles. The company ranks 16th among the world's top heavy truck manufacturers.

Russia could host Palestine-Israel talks as US can no longer be the sole broker – Palestine FM
Russia could provide platform for a potential meeting between Mahmoud Abbas and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Palestinian foreign minister said, voicing Palestine's readiness to sit down for direct talks with Israel.

“Absolutely, [we are ready for direct talks] through a third party, of course,” Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said Tuesday, as quoted by RIA. “We don’t think a 15-minute meeting in Jerusalem would help us,” the minister went on, noting that “coming to Sochi or Moscow would be a good decision, if [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is willing to.”

“The flight is no longer than three hours, and [Netanyahu] would enjoy hospitality of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and the Russian people,” al-Maliki said, calling on the Israeli side to consider the option, according to RIA.

As for the part US has in the peace process, al-Maliki reiterated Washington can no longer be the only mediator.

However, the conflict settlement can’t go on entirely without US participation. Palestine “clearly stated that the US can no longer be the sole broker in the Israeli-Palestinian talks,” as Washington sides with Israel “against the Palestinian position.”

“We can’t ignore the US completely, that’s why we agreed for the US to participate,” the minister said.

Al-Maliki’s words echo Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’ remark, made during his delegation's stay in Moscow. While the Palestinian side doesn’t reject the US joining the mediation attempts, it wants multilateral talks.

Meeting the Russian president on Monday, Abbas told Putin that Palestinians have ruled out cooperating with Washington as a sole mediator due to Donald Trump’s shift to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

Following the US announcement, that drew backlash across the Arab world, the Palestinian president initially declared that Palestinians would not accept Washington in any role in the political process.
