Syria’s East Ghouta militants derail peace talks with armed provocations – Russian MoD
Attempts to broker a ceasefire in the Damascus suburb of East Ghouta have failed because illegal armed militants controlling the area have refused to give up their weapons, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.
“The appeals by the Russian reconciliation center to illegal armed groups to stop resistance, surrender arms and regularize their status did not bring positive results,” the ministry’s spokesman Major-General Yuri Yevtushenko said in a statement on Wednesday, adding that the humanitarian situation in East Ghouta is “getting critical.”
Russia is working within the UN Security Council to draft a resolution to address pressing humanitarian issues in the embattled suburb, deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said earlier. Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia said that the Security Council meeting scheduled for Thursday was “necessary” to allow all sides to “present their vision, their understanding of the situation, and come up with ways of getting out of this situation.”
Dozens have died over the past several days as militants opposed to the government shelled Damascus, while accusing the Syrian Army of bombarding civilians in East Ghouta. The Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria was also shelled by the militants, but no Russian military staff members have been injured.
The US State Department said it was “deeply concerned” by the rising violence in East Ghouta, while French President Emmanuel Macron “vigorously” condemned it and called for a ceasefire. A spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel pointed the finger at Russia and Iran as backers of the “regime” in Damascus. Meanwhile, the UN Human Rights office, led by Jordanian Prince Zeid Ra’ad Hussein, went as far as to accuse Damascus of a “monstrous campaign of annihilation”, saying that two weeks of fighting have resulted in over 1,200 civilian casualties.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has, meanwhile, blamed “armed provocations” by Al-Nusra militants for the uptick in fighting in East Ghouta, adding that terrorist groups that did not lay down their arms would be dealt with accordingly. “In keeping with the existing agreements, the fight against terrorism cannot be restricted by anything,” Lavrov said on Wednesday. The Western and particularly the US position on the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta, controlled by militants, is a clear example of "double standards,” added Ryabkov.
Al-Nusra, currently known as the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, is an affiliate of Al-Qaeda. Russia considers it a terrorist organization. As such, it is not protected under the de-escalation agreement negotiated during the Astana talks. Russia, Iran and Turkey are the guarantors of the de-escalation agreements.

Syrian Army on Verge of Liberation of Strategic Region in Eastern Damascus
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army units launched heavy attacks on terrorists' positions in the Eastern Ghouta of Damascus, destroying several bases and arms caches in the region.

The Syrian army's artillery, missile and air forces pounded the terrorists' positions and moves in Hazeh, Modira, Arabayn, Saqaba, Kafr Batna and Hamouriyeh in Eastern Ghouta.

During the operations, an arms cache and several bases and vehicles belonging to the terrorists were destroyed and at least 13 militants were killed and tens of others were wounded.

A military source confirmed that the terrorists' defense lines have collapsed after the operations, adding that they have severely become weak in the town of al-Nashabiyeh.

The source underlined that the Syrian army forces are more than ever close to the liberation of al-Nashabiyeh.

In a relevant development on Tuesday, the Syrian and Russian fighter jets bombed a convoy of terrorists and their military equipment heading from Eastern Qalamoun region towards army positions in Eastern Ghouta of Damascus, inflicting heavy tolls and damages on them.

Field sources reported that the Russian and Syrian warplanes targeted the positions of Ahmad Abdu terrorist group and other militants who were preparing to launch an offensive against the Syrian army positions near al-Zamir airbase in North of Eastern Ghouta.

They added that during the airstrikes against the terrorists in regions near al-Rahibeh and Petra in Eastern Qalamoun a number of terrorists were killed and several of their vehicles and military equipment were smashed.

Members of Ahmad Abdu terrorist group were preparing to attack the Syrian army positions in the region.

Eastern Damascus: Terrorists Ignore Demands for Talks, Use Civilians as Human Shields
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian defense ministry warned that the terrorists in Eastern Ghouta of Damascus are using civilians as human shields, adding that they have given no answer to the demands for ending the clashes.
Russia's Reconciliation Center of the defense ministry reported on Thursday that Jeish al-Islam terrorists have closed a corridor near al-Wafedin camp, preventing the civilians from leaving the militant-held regions in Eastern Damascus.

It added that Jeish al-Islam, Faylaq al-Rahman and Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) terrorists are blocking any government efforts to help the civilians, noting that tens of civilians have been taken hostage by the militants in the region and tens of others were detained.
The Center also reported that the terrorists have not responded to the Russian military men's demands to stop clashes and disarm, stressing that negotiations have gone astray in practice.
Meantime, local sources reported on Sunday that the Syrian army troops are preparing for an imminent operation against terrorists after arrival of more forces and equipment in Eastern Ghouta.
The sources said that a long convoy of army vehicles, including several armored and personnel carrier vehicles and a large number of fresh forces arrived in Eastern Damascus.
They added that the army is now fully prepared to kick off a large-scale operation against terrorists in the region.

‘Information war technique’: Russia’s UN envoy slams ‘mass psychosis’ over Syria’s Eastern Ghouta
Russia’s envoy to the UN has accused mainstream media of leading a “campaign of disinformation,” spearheaded by the so-called White Helmets group that is complicating the situation in Syria’s militant-controlled Eastern Ghouta.
At an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, Russia rejected a proposed resolution for a 30-day ceasefire in Syria (submitted by Sweden and Kuwait) as “utopian,” while Vassily Nebenzia said that the “propaganda-driven” approach to the coverage of the conflict was making a peaceful resolution even harder to reach.
The Russian diplomat said that “it is high time” to talk about Eastern Ghouta, a rebel-controlled suburb of Damascus which, according to leading Western media outlets, has become a site for a government-led massacre in the past weeks, with frequent claims that civilians are being deliberately targeted there.

“The mass psychosis in global media outlets acting in coordination, disseminating the same rumors in recent days, in no way does anything to help improve understanding of this situation,” said Nebenzia.

“The impression from media reports is that Eastern Ghouta is composed exclusively of hospitals, and that the government is spending all its time fighting against them. This is a well-known technique in an information war. What we do know for a fact is that militants place their strongholds inside hospitals and schools. For some reason that inconvenient truth is not widely advertised.”

Nebenzia said that “several thousand staunch militants” with links to Al-Nusra terrorist group and other radical Islamist militias, remained in the district, and noted their frequent attacks on other parts of Damascus, which, the envoy noted, did not merit the same attention from international officials and journalists.

Nebenzia particularly singled out the controversial White Helmets group as a “primary source” of false and exaggerated stories coming from Eastern Ghouta, and noted that the organization “enjoys generous outside funding, and cooperates closely with terrorist groups.”

Russia, which had convened Thursday’s meeting, has offered a series of “realistic and actionable” amendments to the ceasefire resolution but has warned “that a hard and long road lies ahead if all sides are to sit down and negotiate.”

“There is no other way,” said Nebenzia. “If resolutions alone could impose peace, we would have long been living in a different world.”

Lavrov: US & allies refuse to amend UN draft to include guarantee militants honor Syria ceasefire
Washington and its allies refuse to amend a resolution drafted by the UN Security Council to include guarantees that militants will observe the ceasefire in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
Russia is ready to vote for the UNSC draft, but for the proposal to yield real results, it needs “a formula allowing the ceasefire to be made real, and based on the guarantees of everyone in Eastern Ghouta [province in Syria] and beyond.” Moscow’s top diplomat also cautioned that there are no guarantees that the militants will stick to the humanitarian pause instead of a continued shelling of residential areas in Damascus.

These guarantees should be supported by those who can influence “extremist groups” in Eastern Ghouta, Lavrov stressed, apparently referring to the US-led coalition.

At the same time, Washington and its allies do not want to pass any amendment that would place responsibility on itself for the militants’ failure to stop the hostilities, according to the diplomat.

Report: US to Deploy Lethal Drones to Korean Peninsula After Olympic Games

FARSNEWS2018/2/22
Report: US to Deploy Lethal Drones to Korean Peninsula After Olympic Games
TEHRAN (FNA)- Recent reports by South Korean news media claimed that the US will deploy attack drones to the Korean Peninsula in the next few months.

According to South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo report, twelve attack drones that can target North Korean leaders and military targets will be deployed in March or April, Sputnik reported.

A hangar has already been constructed for the Gray Eagle drones, according to the report.

In addition, support facilities and personnel have reportedly already arrived at the US air base at Kunsan on the West coast.

The General Atomics MQ-1C Gray Eagle is an unmanned aircraft system developed by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems for the US Army.

The Gray Eagle, which has an 18-yard wingspan, can conduct various missions including attack, reconnaissance, surveillance and infiltration. Its 248-mile range gives it enough reach to cover most of North Korean territory.

This is not the first time that the US has sent attack drones to South Korea. Last March, the US deployed attack drones in response to "provocative actions" by North Korea, although this threat has not deterred the North from conducting nearly a dozen missile tests since then.

Earlier this week, a US forces Spokesperson also announced that military drills between the US and South Korea will begin again once the Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang end in March, military.com reported.

Moscow: US Admits Envoys Assigned to Dissuade Partners from Doing Business with Russia
TEHRAN (FNA)- Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the US State Department has acknowledged that US ambassadors around the world have instructions to talk governments out of cooperation with Russia.

"Just yesterday the US State Department spokesperson proudly said in public that all American ambassadors in all countries of the world without exception have strict instructions: to go and demand every day that certain states do not cooperate with Russia," Lavrov said after negotiations with his Slovenian counterpart Karl Erjavec on Wednesday, TASS reported.

"That’s because the US slapped sanctions on Russia. I think it’s enough to just hear this fact to understand on what principles the Americans build their relations with foreign countries," Russia’s top diplomat added.

Speaking on relations with Slovenia, Lavrov noted that Ljubljana "seeks to conduct its foreign policy to cooperate with those states that may provide the maximum economic and investment benefits."

"Slovenia wants to preserve its cultural and spiritual identity. I don’t see confrontation with anyone here," he said, adding that "We fully respect this multi-faceted approach."

On Tuesday, US Department of State Spokesperson Heather Nauert told reporters all US diplomatic missions abroad were tasked with talking governments in their respective countries out of business contacts with Russia, most notably in military and defense sector. She stressed that the US administration believes that its recent law on sanctions helped to thwart Moscow’s deals with various partners worth more than $3 billion in total.

Kurdish Forces Deliver Control of Positions in Eastern Aleppo to Syrian Army

FARSNEWS2018/2/22
Kurdish Forces Deliver Control of Positions in Eastern Aleppo to Syrian Army
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurdish forces have delivered control of their positions in Eastern Aleppo to the Syrian army and hoisted the Syrian flag above them, media sources reported on Thursday.

The Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel reported that the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) delivered control of the Eastern districts of Aleppo, including Sheikh Maqsoud, al-Halak and Bustan Pasha, after coordination with the Syrian army.

Also, certain Syrian sources reported that the Syrian army units have entered Sheikh Khazar, al-Ashrafiyeh and al-Heidariyeh neighborhoods.

They added that the Syrian flag has been hoisted above those neighborhoods, adding that delivering control of the East Aleppo districts to the army was in line with implementing the agreement between the Kurds and the Syrian government on Afrin.

The Syrian and Kurdish officials have not confirmed the reports yet.

The development came after a YPG spokesman underlined that the Syrian army forces have been called to Afrin to end the Turkish army occupation and aggression.

"Deployment of a part of the Syrian army forces in Afrin is aimed at confronting the Turkish government attacks," Nouri Mahmoud was quoted as saying by the Kurdish media on Wednesday.

He stressed that the world has admitted the Syrian army's high capabilities, and said, "They are responsible for protecting the Syrian territories and therefore, their presence is aimed at defending Syria's territorial integrity."

Mahmoud confirmed that a number of Syrian army forces were deployed in Afrin on Tuesday at the Kurds' demand.

Meantime, pro-Damascus popular forces entered the Kurdish-held town of Afrin, as Ankara said its forces have prevented the popular forces from entering Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo.

Al-Mayadeen TV reported that the Damascus-affiliated popular force have entered the town of Afrin via the Ziyareh passageway after leaving the towns of Nubl and al-Zahra.

It went on to say that the Turkish army's artillery units and Air Force pounded the movements and positions of the popular forces in Kafin region to prevent them from entering Afrin, adding that the popular forces launched retaliatory attack on the Turkish troops and destroyed one of their drones.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously announced that Ankara force would prevent the pro-Damascus popular forces from entering Afrin.

Media sources reported on Tuesday that Ankara was attempting to block the Syrian popular forces' deployment in Afrin in Northern Syria to halt clashes between the Kurds and the Turkish army.

Al-Mayadeen news channel confirmed that several routes in Marimin, Bastouleh and Jabal al-Ahlam which were due to be used by the Syrian volunteer forces to enter Afrin have been attacked by the Turkish army.

Hundreds of Popular Forces Deploy in Different Fronts in Afrin to Fight against Turkish Army
TEHRAN (FNA)- The second convoy of hundreds of popular forces arrived in Afrin region, deploying in regions of clashes with the Turkish army forces and their affiliated militants.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported that a new group of popular forces entered Afrin on Wednesday afternoon through Aleppo-Nobl road.

Meantime, the Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel confirmed that 300 Syrian popular forces have arrived in Afrin to prevent the Turkish army's advance.

Also reports said that over 400 Syrian popular forces have been stationed in different fronts in Afrin, including the bordering Rajou region and the center of this region in Western Afrin and Jandaris.

A media outlet reported on Wednesday that the pro-Damascus popular forces entered the Kurdish-held town of Afrin, while Ankara said its forces have prevented the popular forces from entering Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo.

‘I will suffer until the end of my life’: Japan’s forced sterilization victims speak to RT
Thousands of Japanese people who were forced to undergo sterilization operations could be in line for compensation following the discovery of records detailing the country’s controversial, decades-long eugenics program.

Conducted under Japan’s Eugenics Protection Law, the legal program ran from 1948 until 1996 and targeted people with hereditary diseases for forced sterilization surgeries and vasectomies. Now, as the scandal continues to shock the country, it seems some of those affected may have even been misdiagnosed.

Speaking to RT, the sister-in-law of one of the victims claimed her relative’s illness was not genetic but was brought about by an anesthetic treatment as a one-year-old child.

“The reason for her operation was because she had genetic mental weakness,” said Michiki Sato, whose name was changed to protect her identity. “But it's not true. When she was aged one, she got intellectual disability by anesthesia treatment and became a mentally-handicapped child.”

Sato also said that she learned through a Freedom of Information request that her sister-in-law had only been 15 years old at the time of the procedure. Genetic mental disease was the only listed reason for the sterilization. Attempts to access documents relating to her sister’s surgery were unsuccessful as the files were reportedly thrown away. “The evidence of the mutilation of my sister’s body was simply thrashed.”

“I think that the now defunct Eugenics Protection Law existed for the sole purpose to rid Japan of disabled people.”

Another victim, known as Ms. Ilzuka, spoke exclusively to RT, recalling the tragedy surrounding her forced sterilization. She said she was diagnosed with a non-generic mental illness in school. Being mentally disabled she was taken in as a caretaker to work at her teacher's house. There she was constantly “abused” by the teacher's wife.

One day the teacher lured the girl into the hospital under a false medical checkup pretext. Once there, the doctors used restraints and used anesthetics against her will. “When I woke up, I was thirsty,” Ms. Ilzuka recalls. “They told me not to drink any[thing]. That is all I remember.”

Returning home after the procedure, the 16-year-old at the time was told by her parents that she was fixed and could no longer have any children. “My father did not agree to the operation. My father was forced to sign documents by my teacher and welfare officers,” Ilzuka said.

Ilzuka explained the impact the sterilization had on her life. “I married and divorced and married again. My husband left me when I told him about the operation.”

“I know I will suffer to the end of my life. If only I could go back in time but I can’t.”

She called on the government to apologize and pay compensation to the many victims. Chief executive and psychologist at the Tokyo Council of Public Health center, Katsumi Yamamoto, echoed this sentiment and blamed the government. “The question is who is responsible for all of this? To me it’s the government’s fault – they executed the program, as well as the National Legislature which adopted the law.”

“The doctors were also responsible but, in a way, they were used by the government,” he added.

In around 16,500 cases, no consent was given for the procedures while some victims were aged as little as nine years old. Victims pursuing their medical records were told the documents had been destroyed.

A recent investigation by Kyodo News revealed that the records of some 2,700 people have been found in local government archives, a development which could open the door for victims who wish to pursue a compensation claim against the state.

Of these, 1,858 apparently underwent sterilization without consent, while six gave their approval. Consent was unclear in the remaining cases. The survey, however, found that records for nearly 90 percent of the overall 25,000 people are likely no longer maintained by the prefectures, having probably been destroyed.

Even after the law was replaced, the government neither apologized nor offered compensation to victims. Germany and Sweden had similar eugenics laws, but the governments there have apologized for the practice, paying compensation to the victims.

Last month, a woman in Miyagi Prefecture became the first to initiate a lawsuit against the Japanese government for her forced sterilization when she was a teenager, on grounds of mental disability. She is reportedly seeking 11 million yen ($101,000). However, she is just one of what is thought to be as many as 25,000 victims.

Meeting to discuss the issue, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination recommended that Japan provide all victims with access to legal aid and “provide them with compensation and rehabilitative services.”

Russia’s top diplomat told media what kind of thoughts usually occupies his mind by the end of the day and how they help him sleep soundly.

As Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov explained, he tends to occupy his mind with various thoughts before drifting off to sleep “just like any other person.”

More often than not however, these thoughts take on a very specific direction.

"More and more often, however, these thoughts gravitate towards how to handle affairs tomorrow if there are serious talks to be held, or how to resolve some sort of a long-term problem; and it helps [me] to sleep soundly," the minister said, according to Russian media.

US stance on East Ghouta shows ‘egregious double standards’

US stance on East Ghouta shows ‘egregious double standards’ – senior Russian diplomat
The US position on the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta, a militant-controlled suburb of the Syrian capital Damascus, is a clear example of "double standards," the Russian deputy foreign minister has said.

Sergey Ryabkov said that Russia is working within the UN Security Council to prepare a resolution on humanitarian issues in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta. His statement comes amid concerns about escalating violence between Syrian government forces and rebel, as well as Islamist, factions operating in the area.

"The work on the draft of the relevant resolution is now being carried out in New York. Humanitarian questions, including humanitarian aid, humanitarian access, have become perhaps the most egregious example of the ‘double standards’ of the United States and their adherents in the approach to the entire Syrian dossier," Sergey Ryabkov told reporters in Moscow on Wednesday. "Every day we see how not just selectively but how cynically Washington separates the issues that are beneficial to it, from the point of view of political promotion and pressure on Damascus, from similar situations that create discomfort for Americans for various reasons," the diplomat noted.

US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said on Tuesday that Washington was seriously alarmed by the rising violence in Ghouta. "The United States is deeply concerned by the escalating violence in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta," Nauert told reporters."The escalation is exacerbating the already grave human suffering of nearly 400,000 people. The cessation of violence must begin now, and those needing emergency assistance should be allowed to evacuate immediately.” “The Assad regime’s siege and starve tactics are... adding to the humanitarian disaster there,” she alleged, urging Russia to stop supporting the Syrian government.

Eastern Ghouta is among the de-escalation zones established on May 4, 2017, by three state guarantors of the Syrian ceasefire (Russia, Iran and Turkey.) On Tuesday, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on Russia, Iran and Turkey to ensure the ceasefire in Eastern Ghouta, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

"Eastern Ghouta is part of a de-escalation agreement reached in Astana. The Secretary-General reminds all parties, particularly the guarantors of the Astana agreements, of their commitments in this regard," Dujarric said. “The Secretary-General urges all stakeholders to ensure that basic principles of international humanitarian law are adhered to, including unhindered humanitarian access, unconditional medical evacuations, and the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure,” the statement added. According to it, “nearly 400,000 people in Eastern Ghouta have been subjected to airstrikes, shelling and bombardment” and “over 700 individuals require immediate medical evacuation.”

At least nine civilians were injured after residential districts of Damascus came under “massive shelling” conducted by illegal armed groups from Eastern Ghouta, the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria said in a statement on Tuesday. The center itself was also shelled by the militants, the statement added.

Armed groups violated the agreement on the de-escalation zone in Eastern Ghouta, shelling several residential areas of the capital on Tuesday, Syrian news agency Sana reported, adding that at least five civilians died and 20 others were injured in the latest wave of violence. The Syrian military said it carried out "precision strikes" on areas from which the shells were launched. Rebel groups and Islamist factions, including the Jaysh al-Islam militant group fighting government forces in Syria, are known to be operating in the area.

Turkey, Syria, US? ‘Whatever choice Afrin Kurds make, they will pay a very high price’

RT2018/2/21
Turkey, Syria, US? ‘Whatever choice Afrin Kurds make, they will pay a very high price’
The Kurds and the Syrians were competitors, but in Afrin they are allies against Turkey, analysts have told RT. Given that the Kurdish YPG is also backed by the US, whose ally is Turkey, the situation is really complicated.

The northern Syrian city of Afrin has come under heavy shelling from the Turkish army as Ankara ramps up its operation to dislodge the Kurdish fighters, whom it sees as terrorists, from the region.

The bombardment came after a pro-Syrian government militia arrived in Afrin to join the fight against the Turkish military. The Turkish president’s spokesperson said the shelling had forced the group of fighters to retreat to the east of Aleppo.

But other reports suggest the pro-Syrian government forces have taken up positions in Afrin.

Joshua Landis, director of the Center for Middle-East studies at the University of Oklahoma, told RT he thinks the Kurds have fallen victim to America’s power-play in the region.

RT: There seems to be a complex web of alliances emerging in northern Syria. Could you explain to us the relationship between the Syrian government and the Kurds and what Damascus may have been hoping to achieve by entering Afrin?

Joshua Landis: Damascus is very interested in maintaining the sovereignty of Syria. Ever since the Turks threatened to invade over a month ago, Syria and the Kurds have been in negotiations. The Kurds of course, want autonomy, they don’t want to give up their arms, Assad wants them to give up all the arms. Turkey seems to be willing to go along with this. The Russians were on the phone to Ankara trying to smooth the way for a Syrian takeover. But Turkey was adamant that the YPG had to leave Afrin, put down their arms, and completely surrender. And for some reason, the Turks are not satisfied that that is going to happen. They have been warning and saying – if Syria goes in to defend the YPG, Turkey will invade both of them. Why is it not satisfied? We don’t know. Is this because the reports have come out saying that Erdogan’s popularity has gone way up because of the invasion and he doesn’t want to stop it? We are unsure. This is a mystery. Only two days ago Turkey said it was fine if the Syrian army went in, and today it is saying it is not fine. The Kurds and the Syrians have been competitors but they are allies in this situation against Turkey which is the common enemy of both.

RT: We know that the US has been providing weaponry to the Kurdish YPG which are now being used in the fight against Turkish forces. How damaging is this for US relations with their NATO ally Turkey?

JL: The US has been supplying a lot of weaponry to the Kurds east of the Euphrates. When the US first entered into Syria, Turkey and the US came up to an agreement that everything west of the Euphrates was Turkey’s; everything east of the Euphrates the United States’. Manbij is a sore point but that is still to be decided on. But that is the way it has been and the US has been giving a lot of weapons to the YPG. Now it is obviously telling the YPG “Do not attack Turkey with these weapons because the moment you do that, you will justify everything that Erdogan says is going to happen – that you are connected with the PKK.” So, the US is sitting on the Kurds and in essence is telling the YPG “You have to sacrifice your brothers in Afrin to preserve US help east of the Euphrates.”

Huseyin Bagcı, a professor of international relations at Ankara’s Middle East Technical University, said nobody knows what type of alliance can be established and who is leaving which alliance tomorrow considering Afrin crisis in Syria.

RT: Turkey and Kurdish groups are both US allies yet openly in a military standoff. Do you expect the Trump administration to step up its involvement to resolve the Turkish-Kurd conflict?

Huseyin Bagci: The Americans are the other part and definitely they have great interest to stay in Syria because the Kurds provide them the opportunity to stay there. And also with Turkey as an ally… I do not expect a military confrontation between Turkey and the US. Definitely the YPG is now enjoying the protection of America, but at the same time the YPG is dealing with the Bashar Assad regime. It is a very complicated political and military situation there. Nobody knows what type of alliance can be established and who is leaving which alliance tomorrow.

Bashar Assad wants to keep his country under his control; Afrin is still Syrian territory. And the Kurds are now looking both to Turkey and to Bashar Assad. They have a strong choice. Whatever choice they make, they have to pay a very high price. But definitely, they would not choose Turkish side, they would probably cooperate with Bashar Assad because in the long run he is the one who can provide them political autonomy.

RT2018/2/21
Damascus & Ankara dispute whether pro-Syrian govt forces entered Afrin
Forces loyal to Damascus successfully arrived in the Afrin region on Wednesday, Syrian state media says – contradicting statements from Ankara that pro-government troops retreated under Turkish artillery fire.

"New groups of popular forces arriving in Afrin to support the people in confronting... the continued aggression of the Turkish regime," Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

Ankara and Turkish media reports claimed earlier that a pro-Syrian government convoy that attempted to enter Afrin had been forced to retreat after being targeted by Turkish forces.

Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said that an attempt by Syrian forces to enter the region had been stopped, warning that any further such steps would lead to “very serious consequences.”

The statement mirrors previous Turkish media reports on the convoy’s retreat from the northern Kurdish-held region of Afrin, which has been targeted by Ankara as part of its Olive Branch operation against Kurdish militia in Syria. Footage emerged on Tuesday showing a convoy of fighters waving Syrian flags, moving towards the conflict zone.

“Any step for the benefit of the PYD/PKK in Afrin will be counted as a terrorist act and those responsible will be a legitimate target,” Kalin said during a news conference on Wednesday, as cited by the Turkish Anadolu news agency.

The official said that Ankara and Damascus are not engaged in direct talks, but some messages are being conveyed indirectly via Russia and Iran, which alongside Turkey are the guarantors of the Syrian peace process. However, Turkish intelligence may contact the Syrian authorities under “extraordinary conditions to solve certain issues,” Kalin added.

Turkey’s cross-border operation has been ongoing since January 20 and has “neutralized” a total of 1,780 “terrorists” as of Wednesday, according to the Turkish General Staff. Ankara insists that the offensive is solely aimed at wiping out terrorists, denying allegations that it has targeted civilians.

President Erdogan has repeatedly indicated he would like to expand the offensive and vowed to move into Manbij, where US forces supporting the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are stationed. The issue of US support for Kurdish forces in Syria has become a flashpoint in already-strained relations between Washington and Ankara. At a recent meeting in the Turkish capital, US Secretary Rex Tillerson and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu agreed that bilateral relations were at “a crisis point,” calling the situation around Manbij “a priority” that needed to be addressed urgently.

Damascus has repeatedly condemned the operation as a violation of the country’s sovereignty and accused Ankara of “aggression” against the Syrian people.

Pro-govt Syrian fighters begin entering Kurdish Afrin despite Turkish threats – Syrian TV
A convoy of fighters waving Syrian flags has apparently entered the northern Kurdish-held region of Afrin, which Turkey is targeting in a cross-border operation, footage on Syrian state TV shows.

The pro-government fighters were filmed entering the village of Nubul in some 20 pickup trucks. An RT source on the ground has confirmed the movement of troops to Afrin.

A reporter at the scene for Syrian state agency SANA that the area where the fighters arrived has already been targeted by an attack from the Turkish side.

The deployment comes after a reported deal between Damascus and Kurdish authorities, which sought the involvement of the central government amid a continued fight against Turkey and the militias supported by Ankara.

Turkish officials earlier warned that their forces would lay siege to the city of Afrin if pro-Damascus fighters show up there.

Turkey will lay siege to Syria’s Afrin in coming days − Erdogan
Turkish troops will encircle the Kurdish-held Syrian city of Afrin “in the coming days,” effectively starting its siege, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told ruling party MPs, local media reported.

Speaking to members of the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) on Tuesday, Erdogan said the city center of Afrin will soon be besieged by advancing Turkish troops and allied Syrian militias, according to Hurriyet.

“Preparations in the field take some time. In the coming days, we will lay siege to Afrin city; it’s very important that everywhere we go should remain secure,” Erdogan said, as cited by Hurriyet. He added: “Thanks to the siege, the YPG will have no room for bargaining with the Syrian regime.”

Erdogan’s statement comes as Turkish troops are advancing towards Afrin, “liberating” village after village. The offensive, codenamed Operation Olive Branch, was launched in January this year with the stated goal of driving the Kurdish YPG militia group – deemed a terrorist organization in Turkey – out of the area.

On Tuesday morning, the Turkish military said the troops had “neutralized” 74 Kurdish and Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) fighters, increasing the number of slain militants to 1,715.

“The ground operation, supported by air- and ground-based fire support assets, continues successfully as planned,” it added.

Earlier this week, media reports emerged suggesting an agreement has been reached between the local Kurdish administration and Damascus, under which Syrian pro-government forces would be allowed to enter the area. On Monday, Syrian media reported that government troops would arrive in Afrin “within hours.”

However, no official confirmation of the news has been announced, with Kurdish officials denying that such an agreement exists. “There is no agreement; there is only a call from us for the Syrian army to come in and protect the borders,” YPG spokesman Nouri Mahmoud told Reuters by phone on Monday.

Ankara has threatened to confront Syrian forces if they come to the aid of the Kurds, and also dismissed reports on the Kurdish-Syrian deal.

“If the regime enters [Afrin] to clear out the YPG, then there is no problem,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday, as cited by state news agency Anadolu. However, he added: “If they are entering [Afrin] to provide protection to the YPG, then no one can stop Turkey or Turkish soldiers.”

Meanwhile, experts say Syrian leader Bashar Assad and his government are now playing a key role in stabilizing the situation in and around Afrin. “It is ironic because both the Kurds and the Turks at different times stated their absolute condemnation of the Syrian government and unwillingness to deal with President Assad or his government,” Danny Makki, Syria commentator, told RT.

Now both regional actors are looking at Assad as “some sort of peacemaker,” Makki said. While Turkey, which is losing soldiers and armor, is desperate to end the fighting, the Kurds would prefer to do a deal with Damascus rather than make one with the Turks “on very weak terms,” he suggested.
