Turkish government maintains contact with Syria regarding the ongoing Turkish Armed Forces' operation in Afrin through the mediation of Moscow, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Sunday.

Russia: US Actions in Syria Either Provocation or Lack of Understanding
TEHRAN (FNA)- Moscow slammed Washington actions in Syria that “encourage separatist sentiments among Kurds” as either a provocation or ill-informed after Turkey launched a major operation against US-backed fighters in the Arab country.

"Washington has actively encouraged and continues to encourage separatist sentiments among Kurds," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday, adding that "This is either a lack of understanding of the situation or an absolutely conscious provocation", World News reported.

"The United States has long been dissuading the Kurds, with whom they are cooperating, from dialogue with Damascus, completely ignoring the sensitive nature and regional dimensions of the Kurdish problem," Lavrov stressed.

He also recalled the statements made by the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Defense, in which Moscow called for "restraint and respect for the territorial integrity of Syria."

"We have long been paying attention to the fact that the United States has set its sights on creating alternative authorities on the Syrian territory. Washington is carrying out both open and covert arms deliveries to Syrian groups they are cooperating with, first and foremost to the SDF based on the Kurdish militia," the Russian Minister underlined.

Turkey launched a new air and ground operation around the area of Afrin in Syria to oust the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday stressed that Turkish offensive in Afrin is part of Ankara's strategy based on supporting terrorists.

The Syrian government has condemned the “brutal Turkish aggression” against the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin, rejecting Ankara’s claim about having informed Damascus of the operation.

The Damascus government had made clear to Ankara that it considers Turkey’s military presence on its territory as a violation of its sovereignty, and warned that it will shoot down Turkish bombers in Syrian airspace.

Washington also continues providing Kurdish fighters with more military hardware in Syria despite US President Donald Trump's promise to his Turkish counterpart to halt arms shipment to the Kurdish fighters.

Ankara said late November 2017 that US President Donald Trump told Tukey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he had issued instructions that weapons should not be provided to Kurdish fighters in Syria.

According to reports, the US plans to keep its troops in Syria long after the defeat of ISIL. Washington has been justifying its deployment of ground troops in Syria, which violates the embattled nation’s sovereignty, by citing the need to fight ISIL.

Syria: Turkish Army Starts Operation in Northern Syria with US Green Light
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Olive Branch Operation has been launched by the Turkish Army and allied militants in the town of Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo in coordination with the US and is nothing but a copy of Washington's plan to form a 30,000-member militia at Syria's Northern and Eastern borders, Syria's presidential political and media advisor said.

“The blatant Turkish aggression on Afrin on Saturday would not happen if the Turkish government had not previously taken the green light from the US. It’s a complementary aggression to the US one on the formation of illegal forces on the border,” Bouthaina Shaaban said in a meeting with a high-ranking Chinese Foreign Ministry delegation.

“The US intention to form a militia of 30,000 mercenaries to deploy them along the Iraqi and Turkish border areas inside the Syrian territory is an unacceptable and condemned issue as it aims to sever communication between Syria and Iraq, and meantime, the region will be a heaven for the so-called opposition groups' deployment instead of their current locations in Saudi Arabia, Turkey or elsewhere,” Shaaban said.

She added that the US-planed militia is an illegal plan and such forces are occupier because it is to be formed in Syrian soil without the approval of Damascus government.

She added that the US aims, through all this, to prolong the war and to make no room for any political solution for the crisis in Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday stressed that Turkish offensive in Afrin was part of Ankara's strategy based on supporting terrorists.

"Turkey's brutal attack against the Syrian city of Afrin is inseparable from Turkey policy, that was pursued by the Turkish regime since the first day of the Syrian crisis and which is based for the most part on supporting terrorism and terrorist groups under different names," Assad said.

Ankara has launched a new air and ground operation around the area of Afrin in Syria to oust the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

Ankara opened a new front in Syria’s nearly seven-year-old war on Saturday, launching airstrikes against Kurdish fighters in Afrin in Aleppo province. According to reports, Turkish tanks are supporting the Free Syrian Army’s ground offensive on Kurdish positions in Syria’s Afrin region, as operation "Olive Branch" has started.

The Syrian government has condemned the “brutal Turkish aggression” against the Kurdish-controlled enclave of Afrin, rejecting Ankara’s claim about having informed Damascus of the operation.

The Damascus government had also made clear to Ankara that it considers Turkey’s military presence on its territory as a violation of its sovereignty, and warned that it will shoot down Turkish bombers in Syrian airspace.

Syria: Control of Key Positions in Afrin Exchanged Several Time between Turkish Army, Kurdish Fighters
TEHRAN (FNA)- Militant-affiliated sources disclosed on Monday that control over strategic regions near the town of Afrin in Northern Aleppo have been exchanged several times between the forces of the Turkey-led Olive Branch Operation and Kurdish fighters.

The sources affiliated to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) said that the Turkish army men and allied militants stormed Kurdish fighters' positions in Rajou region in Afrin and captured the village of Korni in Bolboleh and the two villages of Adah Manli and Bali Koy at Syria's border with Turkey.

On the other hand, the Kurdish fighters said that they carried out a rapid counter-attack against the FSA and recaptured the villages of Adah Manli, Shadya, Sourka in Rajoiu and the village of Shingal.

The sources further said that four Turkish soldiers and 10 Ankara-backed militants were killed and 11 more were wounded in the clashes, adding the injured were transferred to Turkish hospitals.

Field sources reported on Sunday that the Turkish Army troops and the Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) kicked off a major ground assault under the Olive Branch Operation against Kurdish militants in the town of Afrin in Northern Aleppo.

The sources said that almost 1,000 forces of the FSA gunmen and the Turkish army kicked off a ground operation in the villages of the town of Rajou Northwest of Afrin amid the Turkish Air Force's heavy raids on the Kurds.

Also, the Turkish news agencies reported that the FSA militants entered the town of Afrin in coordination with Ankara forces.

Other sources reported that the Turkish Army tanks entered the town of Ezaz via Bab al-Hawa passageway after the Turkish army launched attacks on Afrin.

The sources said that the Turkish army dispatched more equipment, including tanks and buses carrying elite forces to the border town of Reihanli in Hatai province in Southern Turkey.

In the meantime, a Kurdish field commander rejected reports that claimed the Turkish forces entered Afrin, adding that militants of the Turkey-backed Euphrates Shield have been detected in Bolbol and Deir Balout Regions North of Atma'ah.

Afrin: Over 150 Kurdish Positions Destroyed, Turkey-Backed Militants Capture First Region
TEHRAN (FNA)- A sum of 153 positions of the Kurdish fighters have been destroyed in the Turkish Army and allied militants' operation codenamed Olive Branch in Afrin in Northern Syria, the Turkish Army Joint Staff announced on Sunday, adding that the Euphrates Shield militants have captured the first Kurdish region.

Chief of the Turkish Army Joint Staff announced that 153 positions of the Kurdish fighter in the town of Afrin have been damaged by the forces of the Olive Branch Operation.

He further said that a number of hideouts and arms depots of the Kurdish forces were among the destroyed positions, adding that the artillery units' heavy fire is still underway in Afrin.

Based on reports, the militants of the Ankara-backed Euphrates River have captured the village of Shinkal in Northern Aleppo.

In the meantime, the Kurdish sources said that tough battle is underway in the village of Shinkal in Rajou region in Afrin, adding the Kurdish fighters have thus far targeted and destroyed two Turkish tanks in the village of Sheran near Afrin.

Field sources reported earlier today that the Turkish Army troops and the Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) have kicked off a major ground assault under the Olive Branch Operation against Kurdish militants in the town of Afrin in Northern Aleppo.

Northern Syria: Turkey-Backed Militants Preparing for Attacking Kurdish-Held Manbij
TEHRAN (FNA)- Dissident-affiliated websites disclosed on Monday that the Ankara-backed militants are preparing to launch an imminent attack on the town of Manbij that is still under the Kurdish fighters' control in Northeastern Aleppo.

The news websites reported that the Free Syrian Army (FSA), backed up by the Turkish army, is on alert to kick off an imminent operation against Kurds in Manbij following the Turkish forces and allied militants' attacks on Afrin, another Kurdish-held town in Aleppo province.

In the meantime, several FSA commanders confirmed that military preparations have been done for the operation, adding that they will storm Manbij in coming hours.

Field sources reported on Sunday that the Turkish Army troops and the Ankara-backed FSA kicked off a major ground assault under the Olive Branch Operation against Kurdish militants in the town of Afrin in Northern Aleppo.

‘US broken promises to stop arming Kurds triggered Afrin op’ – Turkey's ex-FM to RT
Turkey would not have embarked on a military campaign in Afrin if Washington had honored its promises to cut off supplies and support to Kurdish militias, Yasar Yakis, Turkey's former foreign minister told RT.

It was “to a very large extent” the US policy towards the Kurds which served as the catalyst for the Turkish offensive in northern Syria, the former diplomat and ambassador to the UN Office in Vienna, Egypt and Saudi Arabia said.

With President Recep Erdogan pledging to expand the military offensive beyond Afrin, extending it to Manbij, Turkey will engage the Americans, leading to the two powers clashing in a third country, he said. This would be “unacceptable in the alliance.”

Relations between the NATO allies “have been going from bad to worse in the last several years,” noted Joshua Landis, Director at the Center of Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma. “The US has begun to write Turkey off as a partner and a security ally in the region. Turkey felt increasingly that the US is siding with Kurdish nationalism in Syria, in Iraq, defying Turkish interests.” Landis believes.

Washington’s announcement to create a predominantly Kurdish border force in Syria was “the final straw” Landis said. Although the US later backtracked on the thousands-strong “Border Security Force,” its stated intention to maintain a military presence in Syria has further fuelled the flames.

“They don’t have to stay and arm and train a Kurdish-dominated security force,” Landis pointed out. Referring to President Donald Trump's reluctance to end military support to the Kurds and Washington's recent announcement that US troops will remain in Syria, Landis said “this change in American foreign policy is what has really driven Turkey to take this step.”

With the Turkish offensive in full swing, the US is going to face “a tough sledding ahead,” while its Kurdish allies “will see America having let them down,” Landis outlined. “What this is going to demand of the Kurds, is that they sacrifice their brothers in Afrin in order to build up autonomy in the eastern part of the country.”

Turkish armored division supports Free Syrian Army's Afrin offensive
Turkish tanks are supporting the Free Syrian Army’s ground offensive on Kurdish positions in Syria’s Afrin region, as operation ‘Olive Branch’ enters its second day, local media reported.

The Turkish military reportedly faces no serious resistance from the Kurdish forces, which have retreated to towns and villages, Hurriyet reports citing military sources.

Earlier on Sunday three rockets fired from Syria hit the Turkish southern border town of Kilis according to the state-run Anadolu Agency, damaging several buildings.

Military convoys with one transporter carrying several tanks were spotted nearby, at the Oncupinar gate on the Turkish side of the border, Reuters reported citing its correspondent on the ground.

Since the launch of operation 'Olive Branch' the Turkish military has struck 153 targets, including units of Islamic State and Kurdish-linked PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG forces, which Ankara considers terrorists.

Ground phase of Turkish attack on Afrin will start on Sunday – PM
Following an intense shelling and bombing attack on Kurdish positions in Afrin Saturday, Turkey's PM announced the ground phase of operation 'Olive Branch' will kick into gear Sunday.
Trends

“From tomorrow [Sunday], depending on developments, our ground units will perform the necessary activities [as part of the Operation Olive Branch],” Binali Yildirim told reporters. He claimed the first phase of the aerial campaign destroyed "nearly all" of the targets.

Several military trucks carrying tanks and other armored vehicles were already sighted at the border post of Oncupinar, ready to cross into the Turkish-controlled Syrian town of Azaz, footage provided by the Dogan news outlet showed.

“The goal of the Republic of Turkey is not, and may never be, to bring prejudice to the territorial integrity of Syria," Yildirim said, according to Anadolu News. "The rescue of our Turkmen brothers from oppression and persecution of terrorist organizations is one of the important goals of this operation.”

Following cross-border artillery shelling Friday and Saturday, Turkey deployed thousands of soldiers of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to support their offensive to eliminate the Kurdish- aligned PKK, PYD, YPG militias and Islamic State fighters.

Some 72 Turkish jets struck 108 out of the 113 intended targets in Afrin Saturday. At least seven civilians, including a child, and three Kurdish fighters were killed in the city center, the YPG command said, adding that another 13 civilians were wounded. Turkey's General Staff, meanwhile, vowed to 'spare' Afrin civilians as it hunts down "terrorist" elements on its border.

Russian MoD accuses US of stirring up tensions in northern Syria with arms supplies
The US is fuelling the crisis in northern Syria and the ongoing Turkish military operation against the Kurds through reckless weapon supplies to pro-American rebel groups, Russia's Defense Ministry has said.

“The Pentagon’s uncontrolled deliveries of modern weaponry to the pro-US militants in the north of Syria, including, according to our information, contributed to the rapid escalation of tensions and prompted the Turkish special operation,” the ministry said Saturday.

READ MORE: Turkish planes bomb Syrian Kurdish targets as Ankara-backed rebels enter Afrin (VIDEOS)

The “provocative actions” of Washington – the announcement of the creation of “border forces” and other activities aimed at the “disintegration of Syrian sovereignty, and supporting armed militant groups” have triggered an “extremely negative” reaction from Ankara, the ministry noted.

The ongoing Turkish military operation has prompted Russian forces, stationed in the region, to regroup and relocate military police units and Reconciliation Center operatives to the village of Tell-Adjar to the east of the city of Afrin. Russia continues to monitor the situation and is ready to provide help to civilians fleeing the combat zones, the ministry said in a separate statement.

Turkey has repeatedly voiced threats against Afrin, branding the People’s Protection Units (YPG) operating in the region as an offshoot of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), classed as a terrorist group by Ankara.

The Turkish government generally opposes all the Kurdish-led militias in Syria, including the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), claiming, they too have strong ties with the PKK, whose insurgency has been persisting in the south-eastern regions of Turkey for decades.

The YPG units are considered to be the backbone of the SDF militia.

Days before the Turkish operation, however, the US made clear it was not supporting the YPG units within the Afrin region. “We are not operating in Afrin. We are supporting our partners in defeating remaining ISIS pockets along the Middle Euphrates River Valley, specifically in areas north of Abu Kamal, on the eastern side of the Euphrates River,” spokesman for the US-led coalition Colonel Ryan Dillon said Tuesday.

The recent announcement by the US-led coalition to create a 30,000-strong “Syrian Border Force” operating under the SDF prompted angry reaction in Ankara, which vowed to take action against “terrorism.” And while the Afrin enclave was designated as the primary target, the operation would be “followed by [the SDF-controlled] Manbij” region, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated.

Syrian President: Turkish Op in Afrin Is Part of Ankara's Strategy to Support Terrorists

Turkish PM says maintains contact with Syrian government over operation in Afrin through Moscow
"We are communicating with the Syrian government through Moscow's mediation," Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said
Turkish government maintains contact with Syria regarding the ongoing Turkish Armed Forces' operation in Afrin through the mediation of Moscow, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Sunday.

"We are communicating with the Syrian government through Moscow's mediation. The Free Syrian Army together with our units have entered Afrin. Russia has no objections regarding the operation. Iran's concerns are now being settled," Yıldırım said.

The Syrian government on Saturday denied Turkey had informed it of its planned military operation against Afrin. "Syria strongly condemns the brutal Turkish aggression on Afrin, which is an inseparable part of Syrian territory," a source from Syrian government told state-run SANA news agency. The source added that Turkey's move was yet another violation of Syria's sovereignty.

Syrian President Bashar Assad said on Sunday that Turkey's offensive against Syria's Afrin was along the lines of the country's policy which is built upon the support for terrorists.

On Saturday, the Turkish Armed Forces have launched an operation dubbed "Olive Branch" against the Kurdish forces in Syria's Afrin.

Syria had warned Turkish AKP government against launching a military operation in Syria's northwestern region of Afrin and said that Syrian air defences stood ready to defend against such an attack.

Syrian President: Turkish Op in Afrin Is Part of Ankara's Strategy to Support Terrorists
TEHRAN (FNA)- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday stressed that Turkish offensive in Afrin is part of Ankara's strategy based on supporting terrorists.

"Turkey's brutal attack against the Syrian city of Afrin is inseparable from Turkey policy, that was pursued by the Turkish regime since the first day of the Syrian crisis and which is based for the most part on supporting terrorism and terrorist groups under different names," Assad was quoted as saying by the SANA.

Missiles hit Turkish town near Syrian border, casualties reported
The Turkish border town of Reyhanli has been hit by missiles launched from Syria, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said. The town’s mayor claimed there were dozens of people injured and at least one killed.

At least one person was killed and 32 others wounded, Reyhanli’s mayor Hussein Sanverdi told Turkish media.

Speaking to the Turkish channel NTV, Sanverdi said: “One Syrian lost his life. We have 32 injuries. Two are seriously injured,” according to Hurriyet.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu condemned the attack on Twitter. "I condemn in the strongest terms the indiscriminate rocket fire by PYD/YPG terrorists that killed one Syrian refugee and wounded 32 Turkish citizens in Reyhanli. This attack on innocent people shows the real face of PYD terrorists."

Photos emerged online apparently showing the aftermath of the missile attack. One man was pictured covered in blood while lying on the ground, while numerous photos of damaged vehicles were also posted to social media.

Four cars as well as business and residential properties were reportedly damaged in the attack. Police have been deployed to the area.

Kurds Still Adamant to Russian Offer after Turkish Invasion
TEHRAN (FNA)- One of the Kurdish movements in Afrin disclosed that the Kurds have turned down a Russian request to hand over areas under their control to the Syrian government.

Aldar Khalil, a senior member of the Kurdish movement of 'Democratic Society', said that the Kurdish fighters in Afrin have turned down Russia's proposal to deliver the regions under their control to Damascus, adding that they still insist on keeping the regions.

This is while the Turkish army has intensified air and ground attacks against the Kurds in Afrin in Aleppo province.

"Russia raised this demand but we will not deliver control of our territories to them and will defend all regions under our control," Khalil said.

The Turkish aggression started after Kurdish militants changed their earlier decision over surrendering their territories on the Western side of the Tishrin Dam on the Euphrates River to the Syrian government after the US offered its all-out support to the Kurds to train and equip a 30,000-strong army.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had in April handed over several villages to the Syrian Army troops in Northern Aleppo under the monitoring of the Russian forces.

The SDF gave control of the villages of Kabashin, Borj Heidar and Fafrin Southeast of the town of Afrin and the villages of Zaof al-Kabir, Borj Qas and Bashmereh in the Nubl region to the Syrian army at the time.

Also, media reports said in early March that several villages controlled by the Kurdish forces in Northeastern Aleppo were handed over to the Syrian Army troops following a Russian-brokered agreement with Damascus.

The Arabic language desk of Sputnik quoted a source in March as saying that the Manbij Military Council delivered control of six villages to the Syrian army troops.

Sputnik added that the villages were in contact line with forces of the Turkey-led Euphrates Shield Operation in Manbij.

But the Kurds stopped delivering control of their regions to the Syrian government for unknown reasons.

An informed source said in April that Pentagon has demanded Kurdish forces to hand over the town of Tal Rifat and several nearby villages to Liwa al-Mo'atasem terrorist group.

The source who requested anonymity said that Liwa al-Mo'atasem terrorist group along with some of the commanders of the Free Syrian Army have accepted to negotiate with SDF under the US mediation.

Mattis says Turkey warned Pentagon before attacking US-backed Kurds
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says Turkey gave advance notice that it was planning to launch an attack on US-allied Kurdish militias in Syria, but he did not specify if Washington tried to dissuade Ankara.

”Turkey was candid,” Mattis told reporters aboard a plane traveling to Asia from the US. ”They warned us before they launched the aircraft they were going to do it, in consultation with us.”

On Saturday, Turkey launched a series of air strikes on the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in northwestern Syria, controlled by the YPG militia which Ankara considers to be a terrorist group. Turkish ground forces pushed into the territory Sunday, supported by loyal anti-Assad militants.

"Turkey is a NATO ally. It's the only NATO country with an active insurgency inside its borders. And Turkey has legitimate security concerns," said Mattis, who noted that gains against Islamic State did not soothe Turkey’s concerns over a breakaway Kurdish state on territory.

Erdogan accuses allies of sending ‘thousands of planeloads' and 'truckloads of arms' to Kurds
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has turned on Ankara’s allies, insinuating that the US in particular has been providing massive military support to Kurdish YPG in Syria.

In a speech to his ruling AK Party Erdogan said that ‘some allies’ of Turkey had provided the YPG Syrian Kurdish militia with 2,000 planeloads and 5,000 truckloads of weapons.

“Now, apart from 5,000 trucks, there are weapons and ammunition from around 2,000 planes.” the Turkish leader said. He also accused Ankara’s allies of dishonesty when they say that they do not provide weapons for “terrorists,” referring to Kurdish-linked YPG forces.

The president also vowed to hand over Afrin to its “real owners,” explaining that he aims to return 3.5 million refugees back to Syria from Turkey as soon as possible.

This weekend, Turkey began operation ‘Olive Branch’ against Kurdish forces in Afrin, deploying jets and land forces.

‘After Afrin, Americans feel threatened by Turkey’s vow to strike US-backed Kurds in Manbij’
With Turkish forces bombing Kurdish positions in Syria’s Afrin region and saying the next target is Manbij, controlled by US-backed Kurdish militia, Washington is starting to feel the heat, Middle East expert Ammar Waqqaf told RT.

As Turkey began its military campaign in northern Syria, the lack of US action came as little surprise, said Waqqaf, the director of the British think-tank Gnosos. “Americans have never been associated with that enclave in Afrin,” Waqqaf said, adding, there's been “no American presence, direct armament or funding.”

Yet, the US is now worried about the “announced objective of going to Manbij, which is directly affiliated with the Americans.” On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to drive what he called “terror filth” from the country “up to the Iraqi border.”

The warning is “a bit threatening to the US,” Waqqaf says. “Apparently, [the] Turks are saying they’re using their feet, telling the Americans –Look, we’re going to head on this and we hope you don’t do any military resistance, it would be a sorry situation, if we would have to shoot and be shot by an ally.”

While “there’s enough incentive for Turkey to continue” with the offensive, Washington and Ankara may still come to a compromise, Waqqaf believes. “What Erdogan said – 'there were promises in Manbij that weren’t kept, so we’re not going to stop' – that opens a door for further negotiations, perhaps to take out or further evacuate Kurdish militias from Manbij.” Ankara is “putting some pressure, hoping for some diplomatic gain from the Americans.”

However, with “no international mandate,” the US position in the region looks “untenable.” It is “a precarious situation,” with Washington not only unable to protect American-backed Kurdish militias, but also risking to lose a longstanding ally in Ankara. The Turkish government is “apparently pushing the envelope to see what happens” in Afrin, given that Syria and Russia have voiced their objections and the US being “not happy about it,” Waqqaf said.

‘US managed to betray both Turks and Kurds’
There is nothing to be gained from carrying out the bidding of the US in Syria, and right now Turkey and the Kurds alike are learning this the hard way, independent political analyst Dan Glazebrook told RT.

Turkey officially launched a military operation against Kurdish-held enclaves in Syria called operation ‘Olive Branch’ on Saturday, comprising airstrikes and a ground offensive.

Ankara maintains that UN Security Council Resolutions 1624, 2170, and 2178 allow it to conduct operations against terrorists in Syria while preserving the territorial integrity of its neighbor.

RT discussed Turkey’s move and what provoked it with several analysts.

Dan Glazebrook, independent political analyst, said it is difficult to tell how the situation will evolve further in the Syria’s Afrin region, “but so far, Erdogan has been true to his words.”

“I have to admit, I initially suspected perhaps there would be some cross-border shelling, but they would not go as far as airstrikes or a ground invasion. And I was proved wrong,” Glazebrook told RT.

“It does look like Erdogan is determined to go all the way. And it really does highlight the dangers of the Anglo-American strategy in Syria for the last seven years, which has been to basically turn Syria into a complete free-for-all: all the states in the region to sponsor their own proxy militias and get involved and carry out airstrikes – Israel, Turkey, the US, anyone else. It is a really dangerous situation,” he said.

Last week, the US announced its plans to create a new armed force with the Kurds close to the Turkish border. After Turkey reacted with outrage to US plans, the Pentagon said it was not creating “a new ‘army’ or conventional ‘border guard’ force.”

Glazebrook noted it is amazing that the US in the past week has managed to “completely betray both its rival allies in this conflict.”

“First, betrayal of Turkey – announcing this Border Security Force, made up primarily of Kurds, without any consultation with Turkey. And then, as soon as Turkey makes an issue of it, immediately drop the Kurds altogether, saying ‘we have nothing to do with them’ and basically give Turkey a free hand to slaughter them. Betrayals left, right and center,” he added.

“I hope that the rest of the world really is paying attention that there is absolutely nothing to be gained from offering yourself up to carry out the bidding of empire, as Turkey is learning a very hard way right now and so are the Kurds, actually,” Glazebrook pointed out.

‘Crisis between two traditional NATO allies US and Turkey’

Ali Rizk, expert on Middle Eastern affairs and contributor to Al-Monitor, told RT the Turkish offensive against the Syrian Kurds “is a very significant development, and where it might lead is unknown.”

Rizk said that this undoubtedly means a crisis between two traditional NATO allies, the US and Turkey.

“It is a problem for Turkey, but it is also a major dilemma for the US: it is very likely that they were not expecting Turkey to follow through on these threats,” Rizk explained.

Ever since the American remarks about a “border army” in Syria, Turkey has been threatening to take action. Rizk said he doesn’t think that these words were taken very seriously by Washington.

“At the same time, it is also something that the Syrian government would object to – the Syrian government considers this to be a violation of its sovereignty,” he continued.

According to Rizk, “the reactions could come from everywhere: we have the US-Turkish dispute, as a result of what is happening, at the same time you have a dispute between the Syrian government and Turkey because the Syrian government has expressed its categorical rejection for any such steps. This could lead even to a confrontation between Syria and Turkey. There are a lot of possible scenarios which do lead to escalation, and now that it’s begun I think it might be very difficult to seize control of the situation.”
