Senior Saudi Royal on Hunger Strike over Detention of His Sons
TEHRAN (FNA)- Saudi Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has reportedly gone on a hunger strike in protest at the detention of three of his own sons as part of the kingdom’s purported anti-graft campaign, which is considered the biggest purge of the elite in the country’s modern history, according to a report.

Prince Talal bin Abdulaziz, the father of Al-Waleed bin Talal, has gone on a hunger strike in protest at the purge being carried out by his nephew Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (Mbs) and the detention of three of his own sons, Middle East Eye reported.

The 86-year-old prince, who is the half brother of King Salman, stopped eating on 10 November, shortly after his first son, Al-Waleed, was arrested on 4 November, and has lost 10 kilos in one month.

According to several people who have visited the frail prince, his condition at the King Faisal Hospital in the capital, Riyadh, remains weak.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the visitors to Talal announced that the frail prince had made no public statement about his refusal to eat.

The unnamed visitor also said that the prince had not raised the issue of the arrest of his three sons with the king during their November meeting, adding that while some branches of the royal family were known to be corrupt, they were left untouched, while arrests were mostly directed at the bin Abdullahs and the bin Talals.

A month before his hunger strike, prince Talal reportedly told friends it was right to protest civilly to draw attention to the tyranny which Crown Prince is establishing under the cover of an anti-corruption purge.

Three of Talal’s sons, including al-Waleed, have been in prison since the first day of the purge carried out on the orders of Saudi Arabia’s so-called Anti-Corruption Committee headed by MbS.

Two sons of Saudi Arabia’s late King Abdullah have been released late December 2017 from detention at Ritz-Carlton hotel, days after Riyadh released over 20 detainees during a recent alleged anti-corruption drive against businessmen and royals after they reached deals with the government, while trial proceedings would begin soon for those who continue to deny the charges against them, according to a report.

Saudi Arabia’s attorney general approved the release of Prince Meshaal bin Abdullah and Prince Faisal bin Abdullah after they reached financial settlements with the government, according to a report.

Riyadh has released 23 of the 200-or-so powerful individuals detained since early November on corruption charges, while more detainees would be released in the coming days, Saudi daily Okaz wrote late December 2017.

Saudi Arabia's anti-corruption committee overseeing the arrests of top princes and officials also reported that evidence of widespread corruption has been uncovered among "influential officials and senior executives" and the trials will soon be held.

The report did not name those involved in what appeared to be the first large-scale release since the royals, business people and government officials were detained in a crackdown spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, while, according to some reports, it is punishing select figures in the country, some of whom were potential rivals or possible critics of MbS.

Okaz has also reported on that Riyadh has freed a former minister and a former head of a major company after they struck monetary settlements in exchange for their freedom. It also freed the former Finance Minister Ibrahim Abdulaziz al-Assaf and former chief executive of Saudi Telecom Saud al-Daweesh.

"The deals struck between Daweesh, Assaf and the royal court include handing over assets held abroad, properties in the United Arab Emirates, private jets, yachts and jewellery," a source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.

It came after Riyadh demanded at least $6 billion from Prince al-Waleed bin Talal to free him from detention at the Ritz, according to a report.

His fortune is estimated by Forbes to stand at USD 18.7 billion, which would make him the Middle East’s richest person. His Kingdom Holding, a Riyadh-based investment holding company, owns stakes in hotels like The Four Seasons, Fairmont and Raffles, as well as companies such as News Corp., Disney, 21st Century Fox, Citigroup, GM, Twitter, and Apple.

The money reportedly requested from Waleed bin Talal would bite deeply into his global business empire. The prince is trying to persuade the government to instead accept a large share in his company while still leaving him in charge.

Dozens of princes, ministers, and former ministers were detained at Riyadh’s luxurious Ritz Carlton hotel since November 2017 on the orders of Saudi Arabia’s so-called Anti-Corruption Committee, which is headed by Crown Prince. The detained individuals are facing corruption allegations but are widely believed to have been victims of a political purge.

The crackdown in Saudi Arabia is widely believed to be aimed at consolidating the crown prince’s grip on power, but it is also speculated that the kingdom is seeking to rejuvenate its economy − hit hard by the fall in oil prices and a costly and protracted war on Yemen − by extorting money from the detainees.

Mohammed bin Salman who has attempted to portray the whole process as an “anti-corruption fight,” has meanwhile been splurging money abroad himself.

In December 2017, it was reported that bin Salman had used a “proxy” to buy Leonardo da Vinci’s painting the Salvator Mundi, which sold for a record $450 million at auction, and a yacht for $500 million. Also, an investigation named Salman as the owner of the Chateau Louis XIV, a mansion outside Paris, which had been sold to him for more than USD 300 million back in 2015.

ISIL's Baghdadi Still Alive under US Forces' Back up in Eastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Well-informed Syrian sources reported on Tuesday that ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is living together with a number of his forces in a region in Eastern Deir Ezzur that is under the US forces' control.

The Arabic-language website of Sputnik quoted Deputy Head of the Syrian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Amar al-Assad as saying that a group of ISIL militants are deployed East of Khabour that is under the control of the US forces, adding that it seems that Abu Bakr Baghdadi is living normally in Khabour region under the support of the US forces.

The Arabic Sputnik further said that the US is organizing alternative scenarios for undermining the Syrian Army achievements against terrorism, adding that Washington is now investing on the remaining pockets of ISIL terrorists.

Washington has openly announced support for such terrorists, planning to use them in a newly-established militant force known as the Nation Army.(以下略)

Letter from Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, Dead Militants' Fingerprints Found in Turkish Raids Against ISIL Terrorists
TEHRAN (FNA)- A letter allegedly penned by ISIL's elusive leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and a set of fingerprints apparently used to avoid detection were discovered in a raid against the terrorist group in the central Turkish province of Kirsehir.

The operation in Kirsehir was one of three operations against the group, which remains a dire threat against Turkey and the rest of the world, Daily Sabah reported.

A report by Anadolu Agency said two "safe houses" raided by police were occupied by suspects captured in earlier operations and along with the letter and fingerprint molds, police found "many marriage certificates", while the certificates bear the stamp of ISIL's so-called "caliphate."

ISIL: Al-Baghdadi to Return to Iraq Soon
TEHRAN (FNA)- The ISIL terrorist group claimed in a statement that its Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is to return to Iraq soon, a move seen by analysts as a last ditch effort to boost the morale of the remnants of the terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.

The Arabic-language Asharq al-Awsat daily reported that the ISIL statement said that al-Baghdadi is alive and will return to Iraq in the near future.

"The Asharq al-Awsat report seems to be only a last bid in despair to boost the morale of the ISIL terrorists in the deserts of Eastern Syria who have been entrapped by the Syrian army and its allies," Political Analyst Seyed Mostafa Khoshcheshm said.

Int'l Human Rights Committee: ISIL's Baghdadi Held at US-Run Base in Syria

TEHRAN (FNA)- Official Representative of the International Human Rights Committee in the Middle East Haitham Abu Saeed confirmed on Monday reports that ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive and is in the custody of US forces in Syria.

Abu Saeed announced in a statement that al-Baghdadi is at T2 Badiyeh (desert) base, adding that he was captured in a heliborne operation of the US commandoes on April 18, 2017.

He further said that a sum of 50 US commandoes were present in the hunting operation of ISIL chief.

"Reports on Baghdadi's capture by the US forces had been previously released, but some did not want to believe in our reliable information about Baghdadi's fate at that time," Abu Saeed added.

The Human Rights Committee is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its State parties.

Meantime, a Syrian source told the Turkish-language Yeni Şafak daily on Sunday that al-Baghdadi was captured in Iraq by the US and was then brought to Syria’s al-Karamah region.

The source, who was previously a militant part of Jund al-Aqsa, told the daily that al-Baghdadi was first taken to the US base in Ra'as al-Ein and then to a US base in al-Hasaka-Rmeilan.

The source added that apart from Baghdadi, seven other top ISIL officials were a part of the group (captured by the US) and that one of them was an Iraqi national and the others were from outside of Syria and Iraq.

Spokesman for the Iraqi Defense Ministry General Yahya Rasoul said earlier this month that al-Baghdadi was alive, adding that al-Baghdadi was hidden somewhere at Iraq-Syria border.

General Rasoul said that the Iraqi intelligence has found evidence proving that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is in a sleeper cell of the ISIL terrorists at Iraq-Syria border.

He further said that sleeper cells of the ISIL were present in desert regions at Iraq-Syria borders, adding that based on intelligence al-Baghdadi was moving from a cell to another in the region.

General Rasoul added that al-Baghdadi was hidden in a region between the Iraqi border town of al-Qa'em in Anbar and the Syrian town of Albu Kamal near the Euphrates River.

Also, one of the commanders of the Iraqi popular forces of Hashd al-Shaabi said in late November that Leader of the ISIL terrorist group is in the US forces' custody in an unknown venue.

The Arabic-language al-Sumeriyeh news quoted Jabar al-Ma'amouri as saying that ISIL Chief was in the US military forces' custody, adding that the US forces would never kill al-Baghdadi unless in a Hollywood-like scenario.

He stressed that people around the world rest assured that the US played a crucial role in the creation of the terrorist groups in last decades, and unfortunately some of the Arab nations embarked on providing financial support for such terrorist groups.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim al-Badri), also known as Abu Dua, was born in 1971 in the city of Samarra in Iraq.

According to media reports, al-Baghdadi was brought up in a religious family. His relatives were famous preachers and specialists of the Arabic language, rhetoric and logic. He received a PhD in Islamic law from the University of Baghdad.

Al-Baghdadi was proclaimed the caliph of ISIL, a "caliphate" created on the territories ISIL managed to seize in Syria and Iraq in late June 2014.

Contradictory reports have surfaced the media on the fate of Al-Baghdad in recent years, while some claim that he has been killed in attacks in Iraq or Syria, others say that he is still alive and on the move.

Reports of al-Baghdadi’s death repeatedly appear in the world media. His death was reported in November 2014, April 2015, June, October and December 2016 and January 2017.

Arab media outlet reported early November that al-Baghdadi is still alive, adding that the terrorist group's ring leader has been sighted by eyewitnesses in one of the battlefields in Southeastern Deir Ezzur.

The Arabic-language Elam al-Harbi reported that al-Baghdadi was sighted alive in one of the battlefields near the newly-freed town of Albu Kamal at the border with Iraq.

Turkish Media: ISIL's Baghdadi in US Custody in Northeastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is still alive and is in the custody of US forces at a base in Hasaka province, a Turkish media outlet claimed on Sunday.

A Syrian source told the Turkish-language Yeni Şafak daily that al-Baghdadi was captured ın Iraq by the US and was then brought to Syria’s al-Karamah region.

The source, who was previously a militant part of Jund al-Aqsa, told the daily that al-Baghdadi was first taken to the US base in Ra'as al-Ein and then to a US base in al-Hasaka-Rmeilan.

Saudi Arabia Pressures Canada over Calls to End Yemen War
TEHRAN (FNA)- A source close to the embassy revealed that Saudi Arabia is reported to have imposed a great deal of pressure on the Canadian Embassy in Riyadh over Canada’s campaign to end the war in Yemen, while the pressure, it is said, includes unspecified “threats”.

According to Al-Khaleej Online, the informed source said that Canada is currently leading an international campaign to force Saudi Arabia to stop its war on Yemen which has killed thousands of civilians and caused famine in the country.

Canada is said to have issued several humanitarian appeals to many countries and international organisations to put pressure on Saudi Arabia to lift the siege imposed on Yemen, and allow humanitarian convoys to enter.

The source added that the Canadian government provided statistics and figures showing the scale of the destruction caused by the Saudi-led coalition. It is hoped that this will see Riyadh challenged about the war in the international arena.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen since March 2015 to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 15,300 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

According to several reports, the Saudi-led air campaign against Yemen has driven the impoverished country towards humanitarian disaster, as Saudi Arabia's deadly campaign prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

Top Security Official Reveals S. Arabia's Support for Recent Protests in Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani lambasted the Saudi government for supporting the recent economic protests in the country, warning that the Saudis will receive a proper response in due time.

Shamkhani underlined that the Saudi government has hired people to provoke the Iranians to participate in street protests, by using the social media and making different hash tags (#) against the government in Iran.

He made the remarks in an interview with the Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news channel on Monday.

"Based on studies, around 27% of the hash tags which have been made belong to the Saudis. Of course, they don’t belong to the Saudi people but the Saudi government, meaning the government of Mohammed bin Salman (the crown prince), launches these hash tags, and those who do this are the Israeli and westerners. The hash tags about the situation in Iran have been launched from the US, Britain and Saudi Arabia," he said.

"They have set up an organization and hired people outside Saudi Arabia to manage it because the Saudis don’t have such a power. Also, the Monafeqin (hypocrites as members of Mojahedin-e Khalq Organization - MKO, also known as the MEK, PMOI and NCRI - terrorist group are called in Iran) are also tools and infantry units of this organization," Shamkhani added.

"Certainly, the Saudis will receive a proper response from Iran and they will not understand the origin of this response. The ruling Saudi family is well aware of the danger of our response," he said.

Shamkhani underscored that Saudi Arabia cannot cover the damages it has sustained in the war against Yemen through interfering in Iran's internal affairs and provoking the vigilant Iranian nation.

In relevant remarks on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani lashed out at certain countries, specially Saudi Arabia, for their attempts to foment unrests in Iran, and promised the nation to accelerate efforts to resolve the economic problems.

Addressing chairpersons of the Iranian parliament's different commissions in Tehran, President Rouhani said that the enemies are angry with Iran's different successes and achievements, including the 2015 nuclear deal, effective fight against terrorist groups and expansion of ties with different world states.

"These have angered our enemy. Our unity was a bullet (arrow) in their eyes and our progress and success in the world of politics and against the US and the Zionist regime was not bearable to them. Our success in the region was not bearable to them," he said.

"They (the Saudis) have blatantly said that we will create problems in Tehran," Rouhani said.

He also vowed that his government will double efforts to resolve the country's economic problems, unemployment, air pollution and inflation.

His remarks alluded to Saudi Arabia’s then deputy crown prince who said in an interview last year that dialogue between his nation and Iran is impossible because of what he called as the latter’s “extremist ideology".

Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Crown prince, who served as Riyadh’s defense minister and second in line to the throne at the time, claimed that his country is a primary target for Iran and charged that Iran sought to control of the Islamic world. “We won’t wait for the battle to be in Saudi Arabia,” Prince Mohammed said, “instead, we’ll work so that the battle is for them in Iran.”

The mainstream media in the West has given a wide coverage to the economic protests in a few Iranian towns in the past few days that each comprised of a few hundred protesters, but none has covered the massive pro-government rallies held in more than 1,200 cities and towns on Saturday.

Russia Deplores Foreign Interference in Iran's Protests as "Unacceptable"
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian foreign ministry in a statement underlined that any foreign interference in Iran's internal protests cannot be accepted, and expressed the hope that protests in Iran will not turn violent and will not result in bloodshed.

"External interference in Iran's internal affairs which may destabilize the situation is unacceptable," the statement said on Monday while referring to the recent street protests in Iran.

In relevant remarks on Sunday, a deputy governor of the Lorestan province in an interview on state TV aired on December 31 blamed "foreign agents" for the deaths of two demonstrators during the protests a day before.

"No shots were fired by the police and security forces. We have found evidence of enemies of the revolution, Takfiri groups and foreign agents in this clash," he said.

On Sunday, media reported that Tehran had temporarily restricted access to social media apps Instagram and Telegram, used by activists to exchange messages about the rallies.

On Monday, Iranian Information and Communications Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said that the restricted access to social networks in Iran amid ongoing protests against the government's economic and social policy is a temporary measure.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Intelligence Ministry identified and detained a number of individuals over their involvement in provoking unrest in the country's major cities.

"Some of the peaceful gatherings that took place in Iran recently to express public demands over the economic situation in the country turned violent due to the presence of suspicious and aggressive elements who caused casualties and damaged public property," the intelligence ministry said.

The ministry continued to make efforts to arrest as soon as possible other individuals, potentially involved in inciting unrest.

Several major cities in Iran, including Tehran, Mashhad, Isfahan and Rasht, have been hit by street protests since December 28, 2017. People have taken to the streets to protest against unemployment, poverty, and the rising cost of living.
In relevant remarks on Monday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised to intensify efforts in order to resolve the existing economic problems, unemployment, inflation as well as air pollution in the country.

The #Iranprotests are a peculiar thing.History shows big protests usually happen in Iran when a clear & specific issue lays the basis for a common view of injustice taking place (ex. 2009 election protests)this time round,no specific unifying issue/clear objective has been cited.

Armed Forces Spokesman: US Plotting New Sedition in Iran
TEHRAN (FNA)- Deputy Chief of Staff and Spokesman of Iran's Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri lashed out at US President Donald Trump for his support for protests in Iran, warning of Washington's new plots.

"The support rendered by the highest-ranking official of the US regime along with a number of governments and arrogant powers' media, including the BBC, to the rioters indicates that the US has plotted to foment a new sedition in Iran but it will bring nothing but humility and failure for the enemies of the Islamic Revolution," General Jazzayeri said.

He warned that Iran will use its right to reciprocate the enemies' hostile moves in a way that they will regret their deeds.

The Iranian foreign ministry had also on Saturday strongly deplored the recent comments by Trump and State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert in support of the recent economic protests in Iran, describing them as "cheap, worthless and invalid".

"The Iranian people feel no value for the opportunistic claims of the US officials and Mr. Trump, himself," Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said.

"Certainly, the great Iranian nation has closely pursued Mr. Trump's active partnership in violating the Palestinian, Yemeni and Bahraini people's human rights" and remember his hostile approach towards Iranians' visit to the US, he added.

"The US officials are not in a position to show sympathy with the great and wise Iranian nation," Qassemi said.

Trump and Nauert had tweeted in support of the recent economic protests in a number of Iranian towns.

Trump has refused to re-certify a 2015 deal between Tehran and world powers that curbed Iran's disputed nuclear program in return for a lifting of most international sanctions. Washington has so far violated the deal with regard to its undertakings.

The mainstream media in the West has given a wide coverage to the Friday economic protests in a few Iranian towns that each comprised of a few hundred protesters, but none has covered the massive pro-government rallies held in more than 1,200 cities and towns on Saturday.

'Trump's support will not be welcomed by Iranian protesters'(抜粋)

The US knows that it cannot topple the Iranian government with protests that are incomparably smaller than the riots that engulfed Iran following the 2009 presidential elections, Khoshcheshm said. He added that western media outlets – and even Trump himself – “are trying hard… to politicize” and exaggerate the issue.

Meanwhile, Al-Burai explained that the Iranian protests are in fact economic rather than political in nature. “The middle class, who took to the streets, are asking for more economic reforms, asking for more jobs and employment, [for] better standards of living,” he said, adding that the demonstrators are essentially not interested in any escalation or political unrest that Trump hopes so much to see in Iran.

He also pointed out that the political force behind the protests could be far from what the US president expects. In his tweets, Trump repeatedly said that Iranians “are fed up with corruption” and are “hungry… for freedom,” which would imply a sort of western-style freedom.

However, it may actually turn out that the protests are driven by Iran’s hardliners and Islamic conservatives, who are challenging the presidency of Rouhani, who is considered a “moderate” politician in the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian city of Mashhad is one of the places where the protests initially started. Al-Burai explained that it is actually a “stronghold of Rouhani’s major competitor” at the last presidential elections, Ebrahim Raisi. Raisi is the son-in-law of the Mashhad Friday prayer leader and Grand Imam of Imam Reza shrine, Ahmad Alamolhoda.

The politician also enjoys the support of the Iranian conservative circles. He advocates gender segregation and even sees sanctions imposed against Iran as a sort of opportunity. Notably, fighting corruption and creating jobs were his major election promises during the last presidential campaign.

In the meantime, the US seems to pay no attention to the real situation on the ground. On Monday, US Vice President Mike Pence promised full support to the Iranian protesters by saying, “We must not and we will not let them down.”

10 people have been killed amid nationwide protests in Iran – state TV
At least 10 people were killed amid nationwide protests across Iran, which have entered the fifth day, Iranian state TV reports.

“In the events of last night, unfortunately a total of about 10 people were killed in several cities,” state TV said in a package aired on Monday, without elaborating, as cited Reuters.

According to the report, security forces repelled protesters who attempted to take over police stations and military bases.

Some armed protesters tried to take over some police stations and military bases but faced serious resistance from security forces,” it said, as cited by AP. The report, however, did not specify the location of the attacks.

Earlier on Monday, a local MP from the southwestern Iranian town of Izeh told ILNA news agency that two people were killed during mass rallies. That brought to at least four the number of fatalities in the ongoing protests. The first two deaths were reported on Sunday by the authorities in the city of Doroud (Dorud), 325 kilometers southwest of Tehran.

Over 400 people have reportedly been arrested following the protests, AFP said.
On Sunday evening, police reportedly deployed tear gas and water cannon to disperse a small rally in Tehran’s Enghelab Square. The protests were held in the cities of Kermanshah, Khorramabad, Shahinshahr, and Toyserkan in the west, and Zanjan in northern Iran.

Pro- and anti-government rallies have been taking place in Iran since Thursday. The anti-government protests were prompted mostly by discontent over economic hardship and alleged corruption. The rallies are the most serious since the protests of 2009, which followed the Iranian presidential election results. The protesters disputed the victory of then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On Sunday, Iran’s interior minister warned that “violence, fear and terror” will be fought, following the third consecutive night of unrest.

“Those who damage public property, disrupt the order and break the law must be responsible for their behaviour and pay the price,” Abdolrahman Rahmani Fazli said.

Late Sunday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the citizens are “absolutely free” to protest and criticize the government, but the protests should not descend into violence. “Criticism is different from violence and damaging public properties,” Rouhani warned, calling for the rioters to refrain from disruptive behavior.

Rouhani chided Trump over his comments concerning the situation in Iran. “This man in America who is sympathizing today with our people has forgotten that he called the Iranian nation terrorists a few months ago.”

Iranians free to express criticism, stage protest: President Rouhani
Iran's President Hassan Rouhani says the Iranian people are completely free to express their criticism of the government or stage protests according to the Constitution and citizenship rights, and in a way that would lead to the improvement of the country's conditions.

Rouhani made the remarks while addressing a Cabinet session on Sunday as he pointed to recent gatherings in protest against economic conditions in a number of Iranian cities.

"We are a free nation and based on the Constitution and citizenship rights, people are completely free to express their criticism and even their protest," he said.

However, he added that the manner of expressing criticism and protest must lead to the improvement of the country's conditions and people's lives.

He emphasized that the settlement of some problems in the country was "not easy and takes time," calling for cooperation between the Iranian government and nation to solve those problems.

The Iranian people have the right to voice their criticism with regard to all affairs, Rouhani said, adding, "We believe that the government and the country belong to the people and the people must properly express what they want."

Rouhani emphasized that criticism completely differed from violence or inflicting damage on public property, saying, "We must not allow an atmosphere to be created in the country under which supporters of the revolution and people will be concerned about their lives and security."

Since Thursday, groups of Iranian protesters have held rallies in several cities to voice their anger over rising prices and economic conditions.

Habibollah Khojastehpour, Lorestan Province's deputy governor for political and security affairs, said on Sunday that two people were killed during a protest rally in the western city of Dorood on Saturday, adding that Takfiri groups and foreign intelligence services appeared to be behind the killings.

"Our goal was to end the gathering peacefully, but due to the presence of Takfiri and hostile individuals and groups directed by foreign intelligence services, two people were unfortunately killed," Khojastehpour said.

Trump in no position to sympathize with Iranians

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani condemned US President Donald Trump’s comments about the protests in Iran.

"This man who today in America wants to sympathize with our people has forgotten that a few months ago he called the Iranian nation terrorist," the Iranian president said, adding, "This person who is against the Iranian nation from head to toe has no right to feel sorry for the people of Iran."

He said that national security, peace and coherence as well as the unity that existed in Iran were the "biggest assets" of the country in the restive Middle East region, emphasizing that people from all faiths and ethnicities enjoyed peaceful coexistence in the Islamic Republic.

Rouhani's remarks came after Trump took to Twitter to express support for the demonstrations in several Iranian cities, claiming that "the good people of Iran want change."

"The Iranian government should respect their people's rights, including right to express themselves. The world is watching!" he further tweeted.

Trump's remarks came shortly after he made outrageous and insulting comments about Iranians.

In his speech on strategic review of US policy on Iran in October, Trump used “Arabian Gulf” to refer to the waters separating Iran and the regional Arab states, which are historically known as the Persian Gulf.

Before his speech, Trump had called Iran a “terrorist nation.” He has also issued a travel ban against nationals of several Muslim-majority states, including Iran.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Bahram Qassemi, on Saturday denounced Washington's "duplicitous and opportunist" support for the protests.

He condemned the "cheap, worthless and invalid" remarks by US officials and said, "The Iranian people attach no value to the opportunistic remarks by American officials and Trump himself."

Protesters march toward residence of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
Several media outlets have reported that a crowd of protestors began marching toward Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s residence on Pasteur St. on Sunday night in the capital Tehran.

Sources have confirmed security forces and members of the Revolutionary Guards were heavily deployed in nearby streets Khamenei’s residence.

According to Shahrvand-Yar, a non-profit institution that advocates for democracy and change in Iran, said on its channel on Telgram app that the crowds of protesters began marching toward’s the house at exactly 19:50 Tehran time.

They added that there were orders for military commanders to “take all measures to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the house of the Supreme Leader”.

Anti-government protesters demonstrated in Iran on Sunday in defiance of a warning by the authorities of a tough crackdown, extending for a fourth day one of the most audacious challenges to the clerical leadership since pro-reform unrest in 2009.

Arab Daily: People in Iran Experiencing Democracy, While Arabs Have No Right Even to Protest
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran is a democratic country in which people can pour to the streets to protest at their government's policies but such scenes cannot be seen in the Persian Gulf Arab states, a leading Arab daily wrote on Sunday.

The Arabic-language Al-Ray al-Youm newspaper reported that the recent economic protests in Iran pleased certain Arab countries, specially in the Persian Gulf littoral states, with the hope of a change in their countries because they are not entitled to come to the streets and protest.

Many of the political activists in the Persian Gulf Arab states are in jails, it added.

Al-Ray al-Youm referred to the self-restraint shown by the Iranian security forces towards the protestors in the past few days, stressing that similar protests would be responded by killing people in the Persian Gulf Arab states.

The mainstream media in the West has given a wide coverage to the economic protests in a few Iranian towns in the past few days that each comprised of a few hundred protesters, but none has covered the massive pro-government rallies held in more than 1,200 cities and towns on Saturday.

This is while a large number of political activists in the Persian Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, have been imprisoned by their governments for speaking about their right of voting and choosing their own fate.

Iran Dismisses Reports on Terrorist Attack on Southern Oil Pipeline
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran rejected media reports claiming that a terrorist group has attacked the country's oil pipeline in Omidiyeh region in the Southern province of Khuzestan.

Aqajari Oil and Gas company which is responsible for the protection and maintenance of oil and gas lines in Omidiyeh region announced in a statement on Sunday that "no incident which damages the working oil and gas pipelines has happened" and media reports claiming that Ansar al-Forqan terrorist group has launched an attack on Omidiyeh oil pipeline are "sheer lies".

The statement came after Ansar al-Furqan, an Iran-based terrorist group with ties to al-Qaeda affiliate groups, including al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board), had claimed that it has carried out a bomb attack against Omidiyeh oil pipeline in the country’s Khuzestan province.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Ground Force earlier this year killed the ringleader of Ansar al-Forqan terrorist group, Jalil Qanbar Zehi, in clashes in the heights of Qasr-e Qand region, Southeastern Iran.

IRGC's public relations office announced in June that the IRGC Ground Force destroyed a Takfiri terrorist team in Qasr-e Qand in the Southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan.

Several terrorists were killed and wounded in clashes with the IRGC forces in Qasr-e Qand region, including the ringleader of Ansar al-Forqan.

The statement added that after being tipped off about the presence of a Takfiri terrorist group in Qasr-e Qand region, several units of IRGC ground troops were dispatched to the scene and attacked the terrorists.

The IRGC's forces destroyed a vehicle laden with 600 kilograms of explosives, seized five bombs ready to be used in suicide attacks, 700 kilograms of explosives, tens of thousands of bullets and a number of weapons and ammunition during the operations, it added.

As per the statement, the IRGC underscored that the operations will be continued until all the fugitive terrorists are arrested, adding that future developments will be announced to the public soon.
