Jordanian King Thwarts Saudi-Backed Coup, Sacks Brothers from Army
TEHRAN (FNA)- King Abdullah of Jordan dismissed three members of the royal family including two of his brothers from the army in a major shake-up in the powerful establishment with sources saying the dismissed individuals were planning a coup and had contacted de facto Saudi ruler Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman and the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

King Abdullah has decided to retire his brothers, prince Faisal and Ali from the army, citing a 'restructuring' plan, Petra news agency reported.

His cousin prince Talal has also been dismissed after a long service as a commander in the special service. The three are now reportedly under house arrest.

The development came as Abdullah prepares his eldest son, Crown prince Hussein to take on a more prominent role following his recent graduation from the top British military academy, Sandhurst.

Over the recent past, Jordan has been moving away from Saudi Arabia and getting closer to Turkey in ongoing regional political realignments much to the chagrin of bin Salman.

Al-Aqsa Mosque located in al-Quds (Jerusalem), the third holiest place in Islam, is under the authority of the King of Jordan through past agreements. The Jordanian monarch is reportedly under intense Saudi-US pressure to accept President Donald Trump's declaration on al-Quds as the capital of the Israeli regime.

Jordan has so far sided with majority of Muslim states in rejecting Trump’s al-Quds declaration and this explains why the Jordanian king was present at the OIC summit in Istanbul despite being under huge pressure to boycott it. The Summit was boycotted by Saudi Arabia, the host of the OIC headquarters, which only sent a junior foreign ministry official.

Arab Daily Reveals Hidden Differences between Riyadh, Abu Dhabi
TEHRAN (FNA)- The secret differences between Saudi Arabia and the UAE have endangered their long-term coalition, a leading Arab daily wrote, adding that it is unlikely that the coalition will continue outside the framework of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC).

Al-Ray al-Youm wrote that despite the coalition between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his UAE counterpart Mohammed bin Zayed, strong differences are seen between the two countries on the regional issues.

The report added that Riyadh and Abu Dhabi have different views about Iran, Takfiri groups, Syria and Yemen, and Saudi Arabia considers Iran as the main threat against the regional stability but the UAE believes that the Takfiri groups supported by Riyadh are dangerous to the stability in the region.

Also on Syria, the UAE's cooperation with Damascus has angered Riyadh and Saudi Arabia considers it as a support for Iran, the daily wrote, adding that in Yemen, Abu Dhabi didn’t support Ikhwan al-Muslimoun and preferred former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The Arab newspaper had also on Saturday reported that Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's recent visit to Riyadh in light of intensified tensions between Ankara and Abu Dhabi has increased differences between Saudi Arabia and the UAE and can lead to the collapse of their coalition against Syria and Yemen.

Sources in the Arab country were quoted by al-Rai al-Youm newspaper as saying that relations between Saudi Arabia and the UAE have darkened in recent months, raising the possibility for Abu Dhabi to withdraw from the anti-Yemen Arab coalition.

They added that Saudi Arabia and the UAE have differences on certain issues, including the war in Yemen and relations with Ikhwan al-Muslimoun (Muslim Brotherhood) group while Riyadh and Ankara are strengthening their ties.

The Arab daily also revealed that an internal stream inside the UAE government is pressuring officials to weaken coalition with Saudi Arabia, seek a way out of the Yemen war and reinvigorate the UAE-Egypt alliance to confront Saudi Arabia and Turkey's rapprochement.

Arab Daily: UAE Distancing from S. Arabia after Riyadh-Ankara Rapprochement
THRAN (FNA)- Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim's recent visit to Riyadh in light of intensified tensions between Ankara and Abu Dhabi has increased differences between Saudi Arabia and the UAE and can lead to the collapse of their coalition against Syria and Yemen, an Arab daily wrote on Saturday.

Yildirim arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday and held a meeting with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman al-Saud.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen since March 2015 to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 15,300 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

According to several reports, the Saudi-led air campaign against Yemen has driven the impoverished country towards humanitarian disaster, as Saudi Arabia's deadly campaign prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

The cholera outbreak in Yemen which began in April, has also claimed over 2,200 lives and has infected about one million people, as the nation has been suffering from what the World Health Organization (WHO) describes as the “largest epidemic in the world” amid a non-stop bombing campaign led by Saudi Arabia. Also Riyadh's deadly campaign prevented the patients from traveling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

According to reports, the cholera epidemic in Yemen, which is the subject of a Saudi Arabian war and total embargo, is the largest recorded in modern history.

Military Expert: Syrian Army Preparing for Liberation of Occupied Golan
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian army is preparing to retake regions occupied by militants in Golan after driving out the al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) terrorist group from Southwestern Damascus, a military expert said.

The Arabic website of Sputnik quoted Heitham Hassoun as saying on Sunday that the Syrian army will purge the terrorists from the Southwestern parts of Damascus by regaining control over the two strategic towns of Mughur al-Mir and Beit Jin.

He added that the army has regained control of the Northern entrances of Quneitra province after winning back these regions and will cut the Zionists' hands who attempt to enter this region using the terrorist groups.

Hassoun underlined the strategic importance of the liberation operations in Beit Jin and Mughur al-Mir regions, adding that this achievement will be a prelude to the army's preparation to liberate all regions in the occupied Golan.

He said that Israel's interference in this region (Southwestern Damascus) has been proved, adding that the latest reports show Israel's financial and logistic support for the terrorist groups.

Tens of terrorists laid down their arms and joined the ceasefire regime on Saturday and left Southwestern Damascus towards Idlib and Dara'a provinces.

Nearly all the terrorists who had demanded to leave Southwestern Damascus were relocated together with their families from Beit Jen to Idlib and Dara'a provinces within the framework of an agreement with the Syrian army.

A sum of 65 terrorists together with their families left Beit Jen towards Idlib province on four buses.

Meantime, 106 terrorists along with their families left Beit Jen towards Idlib on six buses.

Battlefield sources also reported that Al-Nusra Front terrorists set fire to their headquarters and military hardware before leaving Southwestern Damascus.

Meantime, army sources said that the militants who intend to remain in Beit Jen will have their cases dealt with in coming days.

Mattis in particular has been keen to talk up the idea of an “ISIL 2.0”

FARSNEWS2017/12/31
Mattis Should Come Clean – US Never Fought a Real War on Terror
TEHRAN (FNA)- War-party Washington’s war on Iraq and Syria on the pretext of fighting terror is far from over – at least that’s according to Defense Secretary James Mattis.

Apparently, declarations of victory over ISIL by both Iraq and Syria, along with Iran and Russia, are not having an impact on US military policy in the region, according to Mattis, who insists that “the war is not over.” Which isn’t to say that the US is determined to keep fighting a war against ISIL, as such, but rather that there’s definitely going to be a war against somebody in those countries – and that somebody could be anybody. Mattis in particular has been keen to talk up the idea of an “ISIL 2.0” emerging in areas ISIL has been expelled from.

Mattis’ comments are very interesting in the context of other Pentagon statements, which have insisted that US troops would stay in Iraq and Syria long after the ISIL war has ended. This had long been assumed to be just a quiet, permanent garrisoning of the two countries, particularly controversial in Syria since they openly don’t welcome a US military presence.

Instead, Mattis seems to be presenting this as not just an open-ended deployment, but an open-ended war against an ever-changing collection of enemies. In Syria in particular, this is likely to mean a shift away from the terror proxies (created and backed up by the US allies!) toward pro-government forces and their Iranian-Russian allies. In Iraq, however, the continuation of the war is likely to be very much like the last US occupation of Iraq, fighting with any and all forces that are aligned in opposition to Washington’s occupying regime itself.

And the faulty justifications for the occupation, however, are far from blurred:

- The Iraqi Parliament is on record as being against the US-led military occupation of their country. Moreover, most Iraqis resent Americans occupying their country and the Trump administration’s requests to do it forever by maintaining illegal military bases in their country.

- In the future, as now, Americans in Iraq (American troops, contractors and private security guards) would try to impose full immunity for their criminal actions, even when they steal, rape, kidnap, torture, or murder Iraqis, and arrest Iraqis and put them in American-run jails. Moreover, the American occupiers would do their best to have key Iraqi departments as well as armament contracts, under their supervision for many more years, keep control of Iraqi airspace, maintain permanent military bases in the country, and retain the right to strike from within Iraqi territory any country they consider to be a threat to their so-called security or contrary to US interests.

- Anyone in his right mind knows that it’s too much. That’s why political and religious leaders, like Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani, won’t sit on their hands. He might even issue a religious fatwa against the Trump White House, a move that would likely kill future prospects for the US to occupy Iraq permanently. After all, the US military occupation of post-ISIL Iraq is doubly illegitimate, besides having been illegal from day one according to international law. First, a solid majority of Americans want American soldiers out of Iraq. Second, all Iraqis also want American soldiers out of their country.

The irony is that the Trump-Mattis regime pretends to be in Iraq for the sake of “fighting terror”, while they trample on people’s demands both in Iraq and in the United States. This is not what they call fighting the Real War on Terror. This is about fascism and imperialism! In the prevailing circumstances, all that remains for the people of Iraq and the United States is to ensure that will never happen, that the Trump-Mattis regime will never succeed on these dangerous fronts.

The permanent occupation of Iraq is likely to have the opposite effect. It will serve as a recruiting poster for terrorist groups. Using the country for posing threat to its neighbours won’t be justified under international law either. It will be perceived throughout the Islamic world and beyond as aggressive US imperialism. That perception will be intensified if the US occupies post-ISIL Iraq permanently and takes control of the country’s oil resources. As far as intimidating Iraq’s neighbours is concerned, countries such as Iran and Syria won’t sit on their hands either. The warmongers are pretty much in the know that threatening, much less attacking, Iran and Syria directly would be an act of suicide. It might trigger war between the United States and Russia as well.

But the choice of James Mattis for secretary of defense and many other pro-Israel cabinet members indicates that President Trump remains committed to trying this disastrous direction.
