Death toll from Kabul suicide blast rises to 95, over 150 injured
At least 95 people were killed and more than 150 injured by an explosion in a central district of Kabul, close to where several embassies and government buildings are located, Reuters said citing a health ministry official.

Preliminary reports say the explosion occurred close to the building which formerly housed Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry. An eyewitness told the news outlet the blast was caused by a car bomb, which detonated near the gates of the former ministry building.

The explosive device was hidden in an ambulance and detonated at a police checkpoint in the Afghan capital.

RT2018/1/26
A new conflict unfolding in northern Syria has gripped the attention of the world, with some fearing it could turn into a broader confrontation in a country still plagued by war. These are the key points you need to know.

Battleground

Afrin is in northwest Syria, some 57km north from the city of Aleppo and around 30km from the Turkish border. The Afrin region has been something of a Kurdish enclave in an area separated from other Kurdish-held Syrian territories to the east by land controlled by the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

A map of Syria showing the territories held by the Kurds and the pro-Turkish Free Syrian Army fighters as well as the site of Turkish offensives against Kurdish militias, with positions as of January 26.

The district covers some 1,800 sq km, and borders Turkey in the west and in the north. Apart from the area held by the FSA, it also borders a region controlled by the Syrian government forces that lies to the southeast and territories seized by various armed groups, including the Al-Nusra Front terrorist group, located to the southwest.

Parties to the conflict

The Turkish armed forces are supported by the FSA – an Ankara-backed paramilitary opposition group which consists mainly of Syrian Arab and Syrian Turkmen groups, which hold the territories in Afrin, northwest Syria.

They are fighting the mainly Kurdish militias known as the People’s Protection Units (YPG). Formed as an armed wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party, the YPG rapidly expanded during the Syrian civil war. The group also fought against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and received backing from the US-led coalition, which supplied them with weapons.

Ankara claims that the YPG are supported by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), a group listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as by the US, the EU and NATO.

How it started

Early on January 19, Turkish armed forces started shelling Kurdish-held areas of Afrin. Later the same day, Turkey’s defense minister, Nurettin Canikli, said that the operation “de facto started.”

On January 20, the Turkish Air Force launched strikes against Kurdish targets in Afrin while Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that the airborne part of the operation had begun. On the same day, Turkey’s General Staff officially declared the start of the military campaign in the region, calling it ‘Operation Olive Branch’.

The step followed Ankara’s sharp criticism of the US plans to create a 30,000-strong, predominantly Kurdish border force in northern Syria. Ankara called it a “terror army” that Turkish forces would not hesitate to attack.

What Turkey wants

Turkey says it wants to secure its southern border with Syria, prevent the PKK and YPG from “infiltrating” Turkish territory and help the Turkish-backed Syrian armed groups take control over the Afrin region. Turkish officials have called Kurdish militias “terrorists” and said that Afrin was “critical in maintaining the security of Turkey’s border provinces and ensuring the security of the Euphrates Shield Operation area.”

Operation Olive Branch is aimed at creating a 30km “secure zone” within Syrian territory, Yildirim has stated.

What the Kurds say

The Kurdish militias that seized control over the Afrin region back in 2012, soon after government forces retreated from the area, intend to keep what they call “their land.” Thousands of Kurds took to the streets of the city of Afrin to protest against what they called “Turkish aggression” after the operation started.

Later, local Kurdish authorities in Afrin also said that the Turkish operation “threatens the territorial integrity of Syria and the security and lives of the civilians.” They also called on the Syrian government to help repel attacks by the “Turkish occupier.”

Civilian casualties

Although it has only been ongoing for around a week, the confrontation has already claimed the lives of dozens of civilians. At least 24 people were killed in Turkish airstrikes targeting Afrin and neighboring settlements, according to a UN report that also said some 5,000 civilians were displaced in the first three days of the operation.

Local Kurdish sources said that 141 civilians were killed, according to Syria’s SANA news agency. In response to the Turkish offensive, Kurdish militias shelled Turkish border towns on several occasions. The latest such attack, in which the Kurds used two rockets, killed two people in the Turkish town of Kilis and left a dozen more injured, according to the local authorities.

How long will the operation last?

There has been no clear date set for the end of the operation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on January 26 that the operation will also target another northern Syrian city, Manbij. The city is controlled by US-backed Kurdish militia and is some 100km from Afrin.

What others say

Turkish actions have provoked concern among leaders both in the region and beyond. The Syrian government has branded the campaign an act of aggression, while Moscow has urged Turkey to show restraint and respect Syria’s territorial integrity.

Germany also criticized Turkey’s actions by saying that the last thing Syria needs now is yet another military conflict. On Thursday, Berlin also announced its decision to halt all arms exports at least until the new German government is formed, adding that it should not supply arms to crisis regions.

The decision is likely to affect some of Germany’s arms deals with Turkey, including a much-anticipated modernization of Turkish Leopard tanks. US President Donald Trump has also urged Turkey to “exercise caution” and warned that Ankara’s operations, if not wound down, may result in a direct clash between the two NATO allies in Syria.

Northern Syria: Fierce Clashes between Kurds, Turkish Forces Inflict Hundreds of Casualties on Both Sides
TEHRAN (FNA)- Fierce clashes between the Kurds and Turkish Army in Afrin region in Northwestern Aleppo inflicted hundreds of casualties on both warring sides, both Kurdish and Turkish sources reported on Saturday.

The Turkish Army General Staff announced in a statement that 340 Kurdish fighters have been killed in the Olive Branch Operation by its soldiers and Ankara-backed militants in Afrin region in the last seven days.

It further said that a number of Kurdish fighters' positions, trenches, bunkers and arms depots have also been destroyed in the operation.

"Three Turkish servicemen were killed during the country’s operations in Syria’s Afrin and 16 remain hospitalized," said a Spokesperson of the Turkish Health Ministry.

In the meantime, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that the Turkish army and its allied militants have sustained 308 casualties, including four officers, during the clashes in Afrin region in the last seven days.

The SDF also confirmed the death of only 43 Kurdish fighters in Operation Olive Branch.

Yesterday, Ahmad Shoqi, a representative of the Kurdish fighters said that 16 Turkish military men have been captured by the Kurds in Afrin battlefield.

The Kurdish fighters said on Friday that they have captured 16 Turkish soldiers in clashes in Afrin, where Ankara and allied Free Syrian Army militants have been conducting an operation codenamed Olive Branch since January 20.

“The militiamen lost four people,” the spokesman for the Kurdish Self-Defense Forces YPG added.

He also noted the reduction in the number of Turkish airstrikes in the area.

$500mn crypto heist: Japanese exchange Coincheck halts trade, ‘deeply sorry’ for users’ loss
The Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck has suspended trading and withdrawals, saying it “deeply regrets” the loss of tokens worth some $500 million in what appears to be the biggest crypto heist in history.

This time the heist affected only NEM [coin symbol XEM] cryptocurrency, which is currently the 10th largest virtual currency according to CoinMarketCap. XEM was created by NEM foundation and is based on a blockchain technology. Since the incident become public, the token price plunged more than 15 percent from the day’s high of around $1.02 down to $0.85.

The illegitimate withdrawal of the cryptocurrency was discovered on Friday morning. Coincheck rushed to suspend all withdrawals of NEM, as well as sales and purchases. By Friday evening, the ban on withdrawals was extended to all currencies. Trading has also been halted for all cryptocurrencies, expect bitcoin.

Coincheck CEO Koichiro Wada and Chief Operating Officer Yusuke Otsuka said it is so far unclear who was responsible for the hack, how it was perpetrated and what damage has been done.

Police and the Japanese government’s financial regulator, the Financial Services Agency, have been notified of the breach, they said. Police cars were spotted at the exchange’s offices late on Friday.

Coincheck confirmed late Friday that the unknown hackers might have stolen some 500 million NEM tokens (worth up to \58 billion or around $532 million at the time of the incident), which makes it the biggest ever theft from a cryptocurrency exchange. The previous record-holder was Mt.Gox, a world leading bitcoin exchange, in February 2014 when some 850,000 bitcoins (worth $390 million at the time) were stolen from the platform, preceding its eventual demise.

Coincheck has offered its “sincere apologies” to the affected customers but fell short of blaming the incident on lax security measures. “We are deeply sorry for troubling people with this issue,” Wada said, as cited by Japan Times.

It is unclear whether the exchange will able to recover the tokens, although Otsuka said the company has been considering paying out compensations. It is also unknown whether the attack was orchestrated from abroad, by hackers at home, or was possibly an inside job.

Meanwhile, NEM Foundation President Lon Wong said it was a careless security policy that cost Coincheck and its clients a fortune. Speaking at a press conference, Coincheck officials admitted the firm did not implement NEM’s multi-signature smart contracts. The feature enables users to attach several accounts, possibly located on different computer platforms, to the multi-signature account, so hackers would need to compromise both to get access to the wallet.

Coincheck’s refusal to implement the protocol is the vulnerability the hackers most likely seized upon, according to Lon Wong. “That’s why they could have been hacked. They were very relaxed with their security measures,” he told Cryptonews, calling the heist “the biggest theft in the history of the world.”

It was also revealed that Coincheck has not registered with the Japan’s financial regulator – but has vowed to file for registration now.

The over reliance of cryptocurrency owners on web-hosted wallets makes exchanges prime targets for criminals, cybersecurity guru John McAffee told RT in a recent interview, predicting ominously that “every exchange will at some point in the near future get hacked.”

Surprising Discovery Links Sour Taste to the Inner Ear's Ability to Sense Balance
TEHRAN (FNA)- Scientists at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences have discovered an entirely new class of ion channels. These channels let protons (H+ ions) into cells, are important in the inner ear for balance, and are present in the taste cells that respond to sour flavors.

Protons control whether a solution is acidic or basic. They set pH. Not surprisingly, protons do not cross cell membranes; they must be transported across the membrane through special proteins like ion channels.

Although a gene encoding an ion channel that lets protons leave cells has been identified, whether one gene or several genes were necessary to form an ion channel that lets protons into cells was unknown. Now, research into sour taste has identified the otopetrin family of genes as encoding proton-conducting ion channels.

This gene family was originally identified as important for balance: mice with mutations in otopetrin 1 (Otop1) are called tilted (tlt) because they cannot right themselves. The function of the encoded protein and why mutations in the gene cause a vestibular defect are unknown. But while studying taste perception, a group led by Emily Liman, USC Dornsife professor of biological sciences, discovered that Otop1 encodes a proton channel, providing hints as to how otopetrin1 contributes to inner ear function and balance.

Because sour taste is the perception of acidic substances, which have a high concentration of protons, Liman predicted that sour taste cells have an ion channel that responds to or transports protons. Indeed, eight years ago, her lab used biophysical approaches to show that protons enter taste cells through a specialized proton channel in the cell membrane. The gene encoding this channel and the structural properties of the proton channel were unknown.

Liman's lab used a molecular genetics technique called RNAseq to identify which genes were specifically expressed in sour taste cells and not other types of taste cells. Graduate student Yu-Hsiang Tu then tested candidate genes one-by-one until he found one that produced a proton-conducting protein when introduced into cells that did not have any proton-conducting channels.

After Yu-Hsiang had tested more than three dozen candidates, Liman had all but given up. "When Yu-Hsiang called me in to the lab and showed me the otopetrin data, I could not believe we had finally found it," Liman said. "We had been looking for so many years."

In addition to Otop1, there are two other related genes in vertebrates (Otop2 and Otop3), and this gene family is represented in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Otopetrins are structurally different from all other ion channels, and all of the otopetrins form proton channels, suggesting that these proton-conducting channels are evolutionarily conserved. Each of the otopetrins has a distinct distribution in many tissues, including the tongue, ear, eye, nerves, reproductive organs, and digestive tract.

In the vestibular system, Otop1 is necessary for the formation and function of structures called otoconia, which are calcium carbonate crystals that sense gravity and acceleration. The investigators speculate that the otopetrins maintain the pH appropriate for formation of otoconia and that the defect in the tlt mice is due to a dysregulation of pH.

In the taste system, otopetrins may be involved in sensing acids as part of sour taste perception. The function of these proton channels in other tissues is unknown.

"We never in a million years expected that the molecule that we were looking for in taste cells would also be found in the vestibular system," Liman said. "This highlights the power of basic or fundamental research."

Turkey’s Erdogan says will rid Syria’s Manbij of terrorists after Afrin op
Turkish forces in Syria will go after Kurdish militias in Manbij after finishing the operation in Afrin, President Erdogan said. Ankara intends to continue fighting the Kurds all the way to the border with Iraq, he added.

The Turkish military launched a military operation in Syria targeting Kurdish militias in the enclave of Afrin last week. Ankara considers armed Kurdish groups in Syria an extension of the Turkey-based Kurdish militant group PKK, which it labels a terrorist organization. The US plan to train and arm the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a militant force dominated by Kurdish militias, outraged Turkey, which responded with an attack on Afrin.

Escalating the situation on Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the incursion will not be limited to Afrin, which is located in north-western Syria near the Turkish border, and that the Turkish troops will later advance on other Kurdish areas in Syria.

The Syrian Kurdish town of Manbij, named by Erdogan as a possible target, is located some 100 km east of Afrin. US soldiers are currently stationed there, supporting Kurdish YPG militias.

Erdogan’s threat to take the operation all the way to the Iraqi border manifestly raises the stakes in the conflict. Previously Ankara had described the area of its security interests in Syria as the part of the border that lies west of the Euphrates River. An earlier Turkish cross-border ground operation was even called “Shield of Euphrates”. The historically Kurdish areas are located in the eastern part of Syria, bordering Iraqi Kurdistan.

The belligerent rhetoric from the Turkish president indicates that Washington’s attempts to alleviate the crisis by pledging not to continue supplying arms to Syrian Kurdish militias may not have worked. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier said Ankara will watch closely whether the Americans’ promise would be kept.

The Kurdish forces in Syria and Iraq were allies of the US-led coalition formed to fight Islamic State. Turkey, a part of the coalition, was protesting the US endorsement of the militias, perceived as a major security threat by the Turkish government.

Turkey: Holding Business with Terrorists 'Humiliating' for US
TEHRAN (FNA)- Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Thursday the US cooperation with terrorist organizations is "self-humiliating" for Washington.

"It is really very humiliating for America to hold business with terror organizations, [and] take actions it planned with a terror organization in the region," Yildirim said at a signing ceremony to introduce countrywide all-in-one payment system in Ankara, Anadolu Agency reported.

Referring to the US, Yildirim added that the country, which Turkey has worked together with for many years in the region and called it "ally" in NATO, is clinging to terror groups.

"It is a sad and a dire situation," he said, adding that it is “unacceptable” that such country, instead of protecting the borders of NATO, is supporting the terror establishments.

"We will not tolerate any terror establishment along our 1,350-kilometer-long (839 miles) Southern border from Iran to the Mediterranean sea, Iraq, Syria, Euphrates river's East or West," Yildirim stressed.

Turkey’s Operation ‘Olive Branch’ kicked off on Saturday from air and ground around the area of Afrin in Syria's Aleppo to oust the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which Ankara views as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey will ‘thwart games’ along its borders, starting at Manbij in Syria - Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that Ankara will start from the town of Manbij in northern Syria to “thwart games” along its borders.

Manbij, controlled by US-backed Kurdish militia, is located some 100km from Afrin, where Turkey’s general staff officially declared the start of ‘Operation Olive Branch’ on Saturday.

“With the Olive Branch operation, we have once again thwarted the game of those sneaky forces whose interests in the region are different,” Erdogan said in a speech to provincial leaders in Ankara.

“Starting in Manbij, we will continue to thwart their game.”

The military operation follows Erdogan’s promise to “strangle” the new Border Security Force (BSF) in Syria. The US-led coalition announced earlier in January that it would help create the 30,000-strong BSF, half of which would be comprised of the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance.

Ankara’s ire has been driven by the fact that the key forces behind the SDF are the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG). These are linked to the Kurdish PKK, which is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey.

“I have doubts about the humanity of those who support this organization (People's Protection Units, also called YPG) and call Turkey an invader,” Erdogan said.

Ankara says it's taking all necessary measures to avoid civilian casualties. “First, we will eradicate terrorists and then make the place livable for 3.5 million Syrians,” Erdogan said, as cited by Anadolu Agency.

However, the Kurds countered this statement by claiming that the operation had already claimed innocent lives. According to the Turkish president, “some 268 people were neutralized in last four days” of the operation.

Russia has expressed concern over the ongoing standoff, urging all parties to show restraint and respect the territorial integrity of Syria, while Damascus has condemned “Turkish aggression on Afrin.”

The US, which Turkey has repeatedly slammed for arming Kurds in Syria, said it was also concerned over Ankara’s decision to resort to force. On Tuesday, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that Turkey's operations in Syria are distracting from efforts to ensure the defeat of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and risk “exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.”

“This [the operation] could be exploited by ISIS and Al-Qaeda, obviously, that we're not staying focused on them right now. And obviously it risks exacerbating the humanitarian crisis that most of Syria is going through,” Mattis said.

When the operation entered its second day, Washington urged Turkey to keep it “limited in scope and duration.” Erdogan, however, lashed out at its NATO ally, citing the US’ decades-long military presence in other countries. “And I’m asking the US, how long have you been in Afghanistan, when will it end? You came in Iraq before we came to power. Has the time duration ended in Iraq? You are still there,” Erdogan said.

'Small possibility’ that US & Ankara will come face-to-face in Manbij – Turkish deputy PM
The US and Ankara may come face-to-face in Manbij, though the possibility is “small,” Turkey’s deputy prime minister said. Earlier President Erdogan said Turkey will “thwart games” on its borders and start with Manbij, Syria.

Turkey will also continue to use the airspace across Afrin region in northern Syria, where it recently launched Operation ‘Olive Branch’, Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag told Reuters in an interview.

At the same time, he says, Ankara is ready for all types of cooperation with Russia and the US if these actions would bring peace to the region.

The Turkish operation in northern Syria follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's promise to “strangle” the new Border Security Force (BSF) in Syria, which the US-led coalition announced it would help to set up.

The 30,000-strong BSF is expected to be comprised from veterans from the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and other volunteers. Ankara reminded that a crucial force within the SDF are Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which are linked to the “terrorist group” PKK.

A day before the operation in Afrin, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the US of working to create alternative government systems in Syria, which goes against its promises to respect the country’s territorial integrity. “It’s a fact that US forces are seriously involved in creating alternative government bodies in a vast part of the Syrian territory,” Lavrov said.

Later on Wednesday, Erdogan criticized the administration of former US President Barack Obama for failing to keep its promises to Turkey in Syria.

“There was an operation during Mr. Obama’s administration. That operation aimed to clear terrorists from Manbij. But he failed to keep up to his promise and cheated us,” Erdogan said, as cited by Hurriyet Daily news.

Ankara has done its part, but Washington has not, he said.

“They [the Obama administration] promised they would send the terrorists in this area to the east of the Euphrates and leave Manbij.”

Militants with EU-made kit & exiting US-patrolled area taken out by Syrian army – Russian MoD
Two off-road vehicles carrying European-made electronic weaponry were destroyed by Syrian forces near the US base at Al-Tanf, the Russian MoD said. Five militants died and IS propaganda material was found at the scene.

Three off-road vehicles with heavy weaponry mounted on them were spotted by a Syrian militia unit patrolling the boundary of the US-controlled area in Al-Tanf, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Friday in a press release.

The Syrians opened fire, destroying two vehicles and killing five militants. The third vehicle managed to return to Al-Tanf, the ministry said. While checking the skirmish site, militia forces found Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) propaganda materials, European-made electronic warfare equipment as well as large amounts of small arms ammunition.

The slain militants could belong to a US-trained armed opposition group, according to the ministry. “Flags bearing insignia of the ‘Forces of Martyr Ahmad al-Abdo’ were found inside the vehicles,” the statement said, referring to a name of a militant group trained by American Special Forces in Al-Tanf.

The Russian military believes US forces have effectively turned their military base near the town of Al-Tanf in south-eastern Syria into a terrorist training camp.

The militants being trained there are “essentially ISIS,” Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov told Russian media last December, adding they “change their colors, take different names – the ‘New Syrian Army’ and others.”

Currently the militants are planning to flee the Al-Tanf area and prepare terrorist attacks in Syrian provinces of Damascus, Homs and Deir-ez-Zor “to engage and retract Syrian forces” fighting terrorists in Idlib, the Friday statement by Russia’s MoD said.

“These facts confirm that the US is actually involved in training various ‘armed opposition’ factions – being formed from Islamic State-affiliated [IS, formerly ISIS] groupings previously defeated by Syrian troops – to derail Syria’s peace process,” the Defense Ministry stated.

This is not the first time Russia has accused the US military of turning the Al-Tanf area into a terrorist hotbed.

The Russian Defense Ministry maintains the US uses Al-Tanf to train militants, including those of IS. It also said earlier that a number of attacks on government troops had originated from the area. The Americans had attacked Syrian forces and their allies outside the occupied area, claiming they posed a threat to the US contingent

Syrian Kurds seek Damascus’ protection as Turkey’s Erdogan vows to return Afrin to ‘owners’
Kurdish officials in Afrin have urged Damascus to send troops to protect Syria’s sovereignty from the “Turkish occupier.” Ankara insists it will return the enclave to its “original owner” after its “liberation” from “terrorists.”

The self-administrated, Kurdish-held enclave in the northern Syria issued a plea for help to the Syrian government on Thursday, reiterating its commitment to the integrity of the country.

“We reaffirm that the Afrin region is an integral part of Syria and that our forces are the people’s protection units,” it wrote in a statement, arguing that the Turkish military operation in Afrin “threatens the territorial integrity of Syria and the security and lives of the civilians.”

While the Kurdish units will continue to repel the Turkish military offensive and resist attempts by the Turkish forces to overrun the city, the central Syrian government must dispatch its own forces to “protect its borders with Turkey from attacks of the Turkish occupier,” the Kurdish authorities suggested as operation “Olive Branch” went into its sixth day.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, meanwhile, dismissed the allegations of Turkey’s encroachment on Syrian territory, stressing that Ankara is not interested in land grabs but merely in ensuring its border security. Erdogan argued that as soon as the Turkish army forces “terrorists” out of Afrin, it will be quick to return the city to its “original owners.”

A major aerial and ground military operation launched by Turkey in the border area has already strained relations between Turkey and its key NATO ally the US. The latter has been supporting the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) which Ankara sees as an extension of the Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), which is outlawed as a terrorist entity in Turkey.

Ankara says the operation is aimed at fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and preventing Kurdish “terrorists” from gaining a permanent foothold and subsequent autonomy. It was launched amid reports of a US plan to create a 30,000-strong Border Security Force (BSF), half of which number would be drawn from the Kurdish-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Tensions flared up even more following a phone call between Erdogan and US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, as Turkish officials disputed the transcript of the conversation, saying that at no point had the US leader voiced any “concerns” about “escalating violence” in Afrin.

Earlier, the White House reported in its summary of the conversation that Trump “relayed concerns that escalating violence in Afrin… risks undercutting our shared goals in Syria,” while calling on his Turkish counterpart to deescalate the situation and “limit” its military drive.

Despite that, Erdogan announced that the operation may spread into another Kurdish-held enclave, Manbij. Later, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdagt said that there may even be a face-to-face confrontation between the US and Ankara in Manbij, though the possibility of such an eventuality is “small.”

On Thursday, the Turkish military announced it has so far killed at least 306 IS and Kurdish “terrorists” since the onset of the offensive on Saturday, noting that it targets exclusively militants and places the “utmost importance” on not hurting any civilians.

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurdish forces recruited hundreds of civilians in Hasaka, forcing them to join the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) or pay a hefty amount of money.

Local sources in Hasaka province confirmed on Thursday that the Kurdish forces have given a three-day deadline to the residents of the villages of Tal Harmal, Khazravi and Wedad Abdal in Abu Rasin town in Southern Ra'as al-Ain to send one of their family members to the war against Turkey or pay 100,000 Lira of Syria to them.

They noted that the Kurdish forces have also threatened the residents of these regions of attacks and seizure of their houses, adding that more than 200 civilians, including university students, have joined the SDF-backed forces.

In a relevant development on Wednesday, local sources reported that the SDF arrested a number of young people in Northern Raqqa, forcing them to join the group amid fierce clashes between the Kurdish fighters and Turkish army and its allied militants in Northwestern Aleppo.

The sources said that the SDF has embarked on arresting a number of residents in the town of Ein Issa in Northern Raqqa to force them to join the SDF.

The sources further said that the UN representative in the region has not allowed the Kurds to enter Ein Issa camp but tens of civilians have been arrested by the SDF outside the camp.

Qatar may soon buy Russia’s S-400 anti-aircraft system – ambassador
Qatar is in the “advanced stage” of negotiating the purchase of Russia’s advanced S-400 anti-aircraft system. The long-range SAM missile weapon seems to be the latest fad in the Middle East after its Syria showcase.
Doha’s negotiations with Moscow on the purchase of the S-400 system is “in the advanced stage,” Qatari Ambassador to Russia Fahad bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah told TASS news agency. He said the military cooperation agreement, which was signed in October 2017 during the visit of Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu to the Arab nation, “opened a path for Russia and Qatar to interact in defense sphere, including deliveries of hardware, training of soldiers and officers, maintenance of weapons and, of course, cooperation of special services.”

“I have asked the secretary general of NATO [Jens Stoltenberg] to discuss the situation in Syria and [particularly] in the northern part of the country within NATO,” Gabriel said in a statement published by the Foreign Ministry. He also said that Berlin, together with Paris, urges the sides to “stop further escalation” of hostilities in the region “to facilitate humanitarian access [to the area] and to protect civilians,” calling it the issue of “highest priority.”

‘US pushing all buttons it can’ to remain relevant in Syria
The US has zero intelligence to claim a chemical attack took place in a rebel-held area in Syria, nor does it have access, former CIA officer and counter-terrorism specialist Philip Giraldi says.
Giraldi joined RT America’s ‘News with Ed’ to discuss Washington’s condemnation of Russia’s policy in Syria, which amounts to “pushing all the buttons it can” to remain relevant, he said.

RT: How do you assess what is going on between the US and Russia right now over Syria?

Philip Giraldi: The reality here is that the US is a bit player in the resolution of the conflict. The US did very little – ISIS was basically defeated by Russia, Iran and the Syrian government. The US feels it’s left out in the cold. So it is pushing all the buttons as it can. We have again this claim of chemical weapons taking place in an area controlled by the rebels, which has no credibility whatsoever.

RT: How good is US intelligence on what’s going on in Syria, in your opinion?

PG: I would say we have zero intelligence in terms of something like this – a claimed chemical attack taking place in an area… where no one, including the US, has access… They certainly have satellite photos showing whatever the rebels have been able to stage. They probably have some other sensors and things, but they don’t have good intelligence on this sort of thing.

RT:What would you think if Donald Trump ordered another cruise missile attack to counter this? What would that do?

PG: I have to hope that he wouldn’t consider it, because the last one turned out to be, in political terms, a bad move, in terms of the fact that after the attack, it became very clear the intelligence it was based on was very poor. So I hope he’s learned his lesson from that. But on the other hand, he is extremely impulsive, and might try to do something like this – this would be a very bad precedent.
RT: Does it bother you that Secretary of State Tillerson speaks with such conviction on this issue about who is responsible for chemical weapon usage?

PG: Yes, it bothers me in terms of what he is saying, what Nikki Haley is saying. Essentially they… are saying things that they don’t know. And it is very clear to me as a former intelligence officer that they don’t know it, because if they had the evidence, there would be ways of conveying it. They haven’t conveyed anything that, to me, is significant.

RT: Does this sound like future covert operations could be on the horizon for the US in Syria?

PG: The whole idea of this residual force that they’ve been pushing to stay in Syria, which the US is in illegally anyway, is part of this. There are certainly covert actions probably being planned. Mike Pompeo, head of the CIA, has been very clear that the US is going to get, as he puts it, “vicious.” And “vicious” would certainly include covert action in Syria.

Turkish Army, Tahrir Al-Sham Forces Approach Areas Controlled by Syrian Army in Western Aleppo
TEHRAN (FNA)- Field sources confirmed deployment of a military convoy of the Turkish army and Tahrir al-Sham Hayat (the Levant Liberation Board) terrorist group in Western Aleppo to prevent the Syrian army's advance in Idlib.

The sources said on Thursday that a military convoy of the Turkish army, consisting of 6 vehicles crossed Kafr Lousin corridor at the borders with Turkey along with a number of Tahrir al-Sham terrorists and entered the town of al-Ais in Southern Aleppo, bordering the regions controlled by the Syrian army.

Sources affiliated to the dissidents said that the military convoy has patrolled in the region to check the military plans to prevent the Syrian army's advance from al-Ais to Idlib.

Meantime, some sources have claimed that the convoy has been sent to the region within the framework of implementing the agreement to create de-escalation zones and set up checkpoints.

In a relevant development on Wednesday, the Syrian army troops continued attacking terrorists' positions in regions near Abu al-Dhohour airbase and captured one more settlement in Southeastern Idlib.

The army men, backed up by artillery units and Air Force, managed to beat terrorists back from the settlement of Khafiyeh West of the town of Abu al-Dhohour.

A number of terrorists were killed and their military hardware were destroyed in the attacks.

The army's engineering units started defusing bombs and landmines in the newly-freed settlement.

Over 200 Turkey-Backed Militants Killed in Clashes with Kurds in Northern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Over 200 members of the Ankara-affiliated militant groups have been killed in clashes with the Kurdish combatants in the Turkey-led Olive Branch Operation in Afrin region, the Kurdish sources said on Wednesday.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news quoted the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) as declaring that 203 members of militants affiliated to the Turkish army, including four commanders, have been killed in different battlefields in Afrin region in the last two days.

The SDF further said that the Kurdish fighters destroyed seven military vehicles of the Turkish army and seized two armored vehicles.

The SDF said that the Turkish Air Force has continued targeting heavily different Kurdish-held regions, including the village of Iska in Shirwa and nearby region in the village of Jomleh in Jandaris region.

Kurdish sources said earlier today that a notorious field commander of Ankara-backed Free Syrian Army (FSA) was killed amid the Turkey-led Olive Branch Operation forces' withdrawal after fierce clashes with the Kurdish fighters.

The sources said that the Kurdish fighters repelled a heavy offensive of the Turkish soldiers and their allied militants and later in a rapid counter-attack in Jandris region North of Afrin managed to recapture the village on Hommam.

The sources further said that the Kurdish fighters fended off another attack of the Olive Branch Operation in the village of Qastal Jandou near the small town of Sheran in Afrin region and took back control over Qastal hill.

They added that Ahmad Fayadh al-Khalaf, a field commander of FSA Samarqan Brigade was killed in clashes with the Kurdish combatants in Hommam.

Pakistan Condemns US Drone Attack on Its Soil
TEHRAN (FNA)- Pakistan condemned a US drone strike on its territory adding to the rising tensions between Washington and Islamabad.
The suspected US drone attack "targeted an Afghan refugee" camp in the Northwest of Pakistani Kurram region, Islamabad's Foreign Ministry's statement read, Sputnik reported.
The Foreign office also noted the detrimental effect which the US "unilateral actions" have on "the spirit of cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism."

The reaction from Pakistan comes after two Pakistani security officials earlier confirmed that the missiles launched from what was said to be the US drone targeted a house in the village of Dapa Mamozai where two militants from the Afghan Taliban-allied Haqqani network resided.
Earlier in January, US State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said that the United States was suspending the delivery of military equipment and security aid to Pakistan due to the local authorities’ alleged insufficient measures in the fight against terrorist groups.
Pakistan has been witnessing a surge in the number of drone attacks in its regions bordering Afghanistan since US President Donald Trump ascended to presidency and made a decision to take a tougher stance on Pakistan, which Washington accuses of providing safe havens for terrorists.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have further deteriorated over the past month in the wake of Trump’s statement that Washington has received nothing but "lies and deceit" from Pakistan, despite receiving huge amounts of financial aid.
The US President's remark led to Washington halting its security-related financial assistance to Islamabad in early January, citing alleged Pakistani support for the Afghan Taliban and allied militias.

Islamabad in its turn denied sheltering terrorists and asked for further explanations from Washington, noting that the country had been fighting against terrorism mostly with the use of its own funds, stressing that the government was determined to take all possible steps "to secure the lives of our citizens and broader stability in the region."

Trump urges Erdogan to ‘exercise caution’ & avoid targeting US forces in Syria

Trump urges Erdogan to ‘exercise caution’ & avoid targeting US forces in Syria
In a phone call with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Donald Trump has raised concerns that Ankara’s ongoing military operation in neighboring Syria, if not wound down, may result in a direct clash between the two NATO allies.

“President Trump relayed concerns that escalating violence in Afrin, Syria, risks undercutting our shared goals in Syria,” according to the White House readout of the conversation. “He urged Turkey to exercise caution and to avoid any actions that might risk conflict between Turkish and American forces.”

Trump has further urged Turkey to deescalate and “limit its military actions” in order to “avoid civilian casualties and increases to displaced persons and refugees.”

The US has around 2,000 troops and military “advisors” in Syria. Washington and Ankara may indeed come face-to-face there, although the possibility is “small,” Turkey’s deputy prime minister said earlier, after Erdogan announced he was adamant he would “thwart games” along Turkey’s borders.

Despite calls to “deescalate” military involvement in Syria, the Turkish leader announced an extension of the operation from the Afrin region to the separate Kurdish-held enclave of Manbij. “With the Olive Branch operation, we have once again thwarted the game of those sneaky forces whose interests in the region are different,” Erdogan said. “Starting in Manbij, we will continue to thwart their game.”

The rift between the NATO allies has been growing despite the stated “shared goal of achieving the lasting defeat” of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. Ankara’s ire has been driven by the fact the US continues to support the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey says are linked to the Kurdish PKK and are considered a terrorist organization.
