Russian Missile System Tracked US Fighter Jets in East Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Armed Forces Air Defense Troops commander Alexander Leonov announced that US Air Force aircraft in Eastern Syria were multiple times detected and automatically followed.

"As part of its military operations, US Air Force strategic reconnaissance planes and bombers were multiple times detected and automatically followed," Lt. Gen. Leonov told Russia’s Izvestiya newspaper in a piece published Thursday.

The general said the surface-to-air system was deployed to Syria in October 2016 year to "expand control over the eastern Syrian airspace, prevent enemy airstrikes at the Hmeymim airfield and the Tartus logistics base."

He added that US warplanes operating in Eastern Syria were multiple times in crosshairs of a Russian S-300V4 air defense system.

He stressed that US planes reacted "nervously" to being tracked by Russia’s air defense unit from the distance of 200 to 300 kilometers (124 to 186 miles).

The system and its personnel were withdrawn to their permanent deployment site in June this year.

State Secretary: US Needs to Work With Russia on Syria But Bashar Assad Must Go
TEHRAN (FNA)- US State Secretary Rex Tillerson admitted in an op-ed for a local newspaper that Washington has no illusions about Moscow but will work together with it to promote mutual interests in Syria.

Writing in end-of-the-year article for the New York Times on Wednesday, Tillerson accused Russia of hostile actions against its neighbors and his nation’s Western allies.

"While we are on guard against Russian aggression, we recognize the need to work with Russia where mutual interests intersect. Nowhere is that more evident than in Syria," he wrote.

He said Washington expected Russia to deliver on its commitments to create a new future for Syria, after Russian President Vladimir Putin backed the UN-led process in Geneva, Switzerland.

"We are confident that the fulfillment of these talks will produce a Syria that is free of Bashar al-Assad and his family," he added.

Russia has been actively involved in the Syrian peace process, volunteering to act as a ceasefire guarantor and proposing to host a Syrian dialogue congress in Sochi next month. Moscow has demanded that President Assad’s role in Syria's future be determined by its people.

Russian FM: US Forces Must Leave Syrian Territory Completely
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the US forces must leave Syrian territory completely.

Speaking to Interfax news agency on Thursday, Lavrov added that the UN Security Council has not approved the work of the United States and the coalition it leads in Syria, nor has been invited by the Syrian legitimate government, emphasizing that they (Russian side) are Judging from the fact that the Americans should leave the Syrian territory once the remnants of the terrorists are completely destroyed and that will happen very soon.

On the statement of the US Defense Secretary, James Matisse, about the intention of US troops to stay in Syria until achieving progress in the political settlement, Lavrov pointed out that such statement is “surprising” because it means that Washington reserves the right to determine the progress and wants to keep control over part of Syrian territory to achieve the result it wants.

The Russian Minister affirmed that according to the UNSC No.2254, which the United States supported, the decision on the future of Syria can only be taken by the Syrian people and this is what Moscow will start with in its contacts with the Americans later.

He also expressed his satisfaction that cooperation with the US in Syria is possible if the Americans’ goal is to fight terrorism.

Russia: Erdogan's Claims That Assad Is A 'Terrorist' Have No Legal Basis
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the recent statement of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad a "terrorist".

"Such evaluations do not have any legal basis… Such statements are groundless," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a briefing on Thursday, Sputnik reported.

She added that the representatives of the Syrian government are members of the UN and represent the country's government in the UN Security Council.

Erdogan labeled Assad “a terrorist” in a news conference in Tunis on Wednesday.

“Assad is definitely a terrorist who has carried out state terrorism,” Erdogan said, adding that “It is impossible to continue with Assad. How can we embrace the future with a Syrian President who has killed close to a million of his citizens?”

Erdogan underlined that peace would not come to Syria while Assad remained its President and that the Syrian government should play no part in designing the country’s political future.

Damascus on Wednesday held President of the Turkey responsible for shedding the Syrian blood, saying that its aggression and the entry of the Ankara forces to the Syrian territory reveals one image of the Turkey’s support to Takfiri terrorism.

Once again, Erdogan misleads the public opinion with his political bubbles in a desperate attempt to absolve himself from crimes committed against the Syrian people through providing unlimited support to the terrorist groups in Syria, which has become clear to the entire world, an official source at Foreign and Expatriates Ministry announced.

It affirmed that Erdogan, who has turned Turkey into a big jail and muzzled the mouth of media, intellectuals and everyone who opposes his destructive policies against Syria, lacks credibility to address preaches that show the range of his tension and confusion caused by his clumsy policies.

The Ministry concluded by stressing that Erdogan’s paranoia and illusions of the past made him forget that his old empire has vanished and that the free people of the world have the choice to make their national decisions and defend their sovereignty and will not allow Erdogan to interfere in their affairs.

Assad's government has faced militancy since March 2011, when governments opposed to him armed and financed some of his domestic political foes in an attempt to have him forcefully removed from power. Armed factions were soon joined by an array of international terrorists pouring into the country to help oust Syrian President.

But the government in Damascus persevered as different factions of the society rallied around Assad in the face of an all-out militancy. Syria's allies, Iran and Russia, also offered advisory military help, and Moscow launched an aerial bombardment campaign against terrorist groups in the country in September 2015 on a request from the Syrian government.

Twitter account of imprisoned Palestinian teenage girl Ahed Tamimi deleted
Without explanation, the Twitter account belonging to imprisoned Palestinian teenage girl Ahed Tamimi was deleted. Tamimi was arrested and imprisoned by the Israeli military.

Another account has been created, calling for Twitter to reinstate Tamimi’s original account.

While it is unclear if Twitter itself deleted the account, Manal Tamimi, a relative of Ahed, suggested Twitter did indeed ban the account.

The Palestinian teenager was arrested last week after a video of her slapping Israeli soldiers who were blocking the steps at her family’s house went viral. Israeli forces confiscated computer equipment from the Tamimi residence during the nighttime raid. It is possible that Israel accessed Ahed Tamimi's account from those computers.

Tamimi’s cousin Nour was also arrested. Her mother Nariman Tamimi was detained as well, when she went to the police station where her daughter was being held.

The Tamimis are prominent anti-occupation activists who reside in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. They lead demonstrations every Friday to protest the confiscation of the village’s well for the nearby settlement of Halamish.

An Israeli soldier shot Ahed Tamimi’s brother Mohammad, 14, in the head during a demonstration on December 22. He has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery and a medically induced coma.

The Tamimis have long been targeted for their activism. In 2011, an Israeli soldier fired a tear gas canister from closer range at Mustafa Tamimi, killing him. Israel's Military Advocate General cleared the soldier who fired the canister of any wrongdoing. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said the ruling “conveys the indifference of the military law enforcement system to the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank.”

While it is unknown if Israeli authorities requested that Twitter suspend Tamimi’s account, the social media giant has collaborated with Israel before. In 2016, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked revealed that Twitter was removing content it deemed “harmful.”

RT reached out to Twitter for comment on the suspension of Ahed Tamimi’s account but had not received any response at the time of publication.

Tel Aviv has condemned “malicious” anti-Semitic graffiti daubed on Jewish institutions in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, and has urged Kiev to take “decisive measures” against neo-Nazis.

“We are gravely concerned by these expressions of anti-Semitism, and expect Ukraine's government to take decisive measures to eliminate anti-Semitic phenomena and to bring the culprits to justice,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

The offensive markings, spray-painted on several Jewish sites in Odessa, were discovered Monday, and pictures and videos of them promptly spread across social media. In one instance, “First toast for Holocaust!” was written on the gates of a local Holocaust Museum.

Another anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered on the gates of the Brodsky synagogue, reading: “K*kes out. Ukraine for Ukrainians.” The slogan dates back to World War Two, as it was used by Ukrainian ultra-nationalists who collaborated with Nazi Germany and participated in ethnic cleansing. The building has long housed a state archive and was not used as a synagogue since the 1920s.

The third offensive example of graffiti emerged on the Beit-Grand Jewish cultural center. The graffiti reads: “Aunt Sonya won’t help – the boss is Ukrainian here.” All the graffiti was accompanied by the Wolfsangel symbol, widely used in Nazi Germany and popular among Ukrainian neo-Nazis today.

A similar symbol is used by the notorious Azov battalion, which is engaged in the civil conflict in eastern Ukraine, as well as by several other Ukrainian far-right organizations. Azov, however, denies the Nazi essence of their emblem, claiming it to be a monogram IN – Idea of the Nation – and not the Wolfsangel.

Jewish Settlers Storm Palestinian School, Assault Students, Teachers
TEHRAN (FNA)- Jewish settlers stormed a Palestinian school in the occupied West Bank on Thursday morning and assaulted students and teachers, according to a prominent Palestinian official.

Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian Authority official in charge of tracking Israeli settlement expansion in the Northern West Bank, said about 15 Jewish settlers had stormed the Burin school in the West Bank city of Nablus, where they had assaulted students and vandalized teachers' cars, Daily Sabah reported.

The incident led to limited clashes between Palestinian students and settlers before the Israeli army intervened, he added.

According to Daghlas, Israeli army troops used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the Palestinian teachers and students.

Some 40,000 Jewish settlers live near the Palestinian city of Nablus in 39 settlements and settler outposts, from which they carry out occasional attacks on Palestinians and their property, Palestinian officials say.

US-led coalition won't attack ISIS in govt-controlled areas of Syria – commander

US-led coalition won't attack ISIS in govt-controlled areas of Syria – commander
Ignoring the Syrian forces' vastly successful Russia-backed anti-terrorist campaign, a senior coalition commander has accused Damascus of being "unwilling or unable" to defeat ISIS.

Still, the coalition won't go after Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists that are still holed up in territory under the Syrian government's control. “We will continue to deconflict with the Russians, but we have got no intention to operate in areas that are currently held by the regime,” Gen. Felix Gedney, of the British Army, the coalition's deputy commander for strategy and support, said at a Wednesday briefing. The general claimed that a “limited number of ISIS militants” have been moving toward Damascus, stressing that the coalition has no plans to confront them since the area is controlled by Syria.

While the coalition won’t leave Syria “until ISIS no longer poses a threat” and a UN-endorsed peace settlement is reached, it would be active only “in areas controlled by partner forces,” Gedney added.

“They seem to be moving with impunity through regime-held territory, showing that the regime is clearly either unwilling or unable to defeat Daesh within their borders,” he went on to say.

That's after the Syrian forces, backed by the Russian airstrikes, liberated some 98 percent of the Syrian territory from Islamist terrorists, according to late November statements by both the Defense Ministry and President Vladimir Putin. The remaining pockets of resistance, Putin said, are “quickly dissolving under attacks by the Russian Airspace Forces and its Syrian allies.”

On December 11, Putin announced the withdrawal of the bulk of the Russian contingent from Syria, following a two-year operation that lead to the defeat of “the most battle-hardened grouping of international terrorists.”

Since the launch of the campaign on September 30, 2015 at the request of the Syrian government, then deeply in retreat and in control of just 10 percent of the land, over 67,000 square kilometers of Syrian territory have been liberated and over 32,000 terrorists killed, according to the commander of the Russian forces in Syria, Colonel-General Sergey Surovkin.

Russian warplanes were carrying out 60-70 sorties a day on average, targeting militants’ infrastructure and bases, while the international coalition contributed some 8 to 10, Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov said in a recent interview to Komsomolskaya Pravda daily. At the height of the anti-terrorist campaign, Russian jets were conducting up to 120-140 raids every day.

Still, the US-led coalition rushed to declare the victory over ISIS was theirs and downplay Moscow's contribution, shortly after the Russian military announced Syria's liberation. US President Donald Trump bluntly said, “We’ve won,” in Syria and Iraq while praising himself and his Defense Secretary James Mattis for “knocking the hell out of” ISIS. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian went even further, accusing Moscow of “appropriating” the US-led coalition’s achievements.

シリア政府軍とクルドの間の緊張高まる 2

New US-Backed Kurdish Army Formed in Northern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurds in Syria have formed a new military body named the 'Northern Syria Army' which includes the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People's Protection Units (YPG) and other groups with the aim of protecting the regions controlled by Kurds in the country.

Commander of the Northern Syria Army Siaband Volat warned on Wednesday that his forces will confront any attacks against the regions controlled by Kurds.

The Northern Syria Army which is recruiting forces will protect regions in Hasaka, Koubani, Tal Abyadh, Manbij, Afrin, Raqqa and Northern Deir Ezzur, and has already recruited 100,000 forces.

Volat underlined that the US-led coalition forces will train and support the Northern Syria Army technically and will supply them with weapons.

Training of the Kurds' new military body will be carried out in al-Jazeera, Koubani, Afrin, Manbij and al-Tabaqah bases.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump approved providing weapons worth $393 million to its partners in Syria despite Ankara's concerns over the continued delivery of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to PKK's Syrian offshoot the YPG.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said mid-December that all US-backed Kurdish armed militants are “traitors” to the Syrian nation, ramping up the rhetoric particularly against the YPG, which are mainly active in Northeastern areas of the Arab country through receiving vital substantial air and armament support from Washington.

“When we talk about those referred to as 'the Kurds', they are in fact not just Kurds. All those who work for a foreign country, mainly those under American command... are traitors” regardless of their names, Assad added.

The Syrian army troops are preparing for attacking the Kurdish-majority SDF in Deir Ezzur to recapture the oil and gas fields under their control after President al-Assad blasted the Kurds' betrayal to the country and their close cooperation with the American invaders, media sources disclosed on Sunday.

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news quoted the Russian papers as saying that the Syrian intelligence service rests assured that Kurds and the US officers played a key role in evacuating ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and seven of his close aids from his hideout in Iraq to a US-run base in Ra'as al-Ein and then to Rmeilan in Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria.

Al-Hadath further said that the Kurdish militants are likely to retreat from Eastern Syria in the new year, adding that the Syrian Army's elite units are now prepared to take control of oil and gas fields on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River that the Kurds occupied with the US back up.

In went on to say that the Syrian Army plan to use an assault strategy similar to the Iraqi troops' Kirkuk liberation operation.

According to the report, the Syrian Army Command plans to give the last ultimatum to the Kurds to deliver control of oil and gas fields to the government troops before waging the attack.
