Tens of thousands of US citizens may die if Korean conflict breaks out – Russian Security Council
A full-scale military action on the Korean peninsula would kill tens of thousands of Americans living in South Korea, the head of Russia’s Security Council warned.

The US is well aware that a possible attack on North Korea would inflict heavy casualties on 250,000 Americans residing in the South, Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of Russia’s Security Council, told Russian media on Tuesday.

“If large-scale hostilities break out on the Korean peninsula, tens of thousands of US citizens will die,” Patrushev stressed. He added such an outcome is known as “unacceptable casualties in every country’s military language.”

The security official reiterated that North Korea’s artillery and rocket launch sites are positioned just 50 kilometers from Seoul, a vibrant metropolis accommodating some 10 million people.

In the meantime, Washington bears responsibility for contributing to “a vicious circle” of tension on the peninsula. “Today, the US makes aggressive [and] provocative statements against the [North Korean] leadership and the entire North Korean people, and conducts large-scale aerial and naval drills together with South Korea,” Patrushev said.

For its part, Pyongyang responds with new ballistic missile launches and equally harsh statements. “This vicious circle is to be broken by political and diplomatic means only,” Patrushev added. Moscow and Beijing, he stressed, are now pushing for a comprehensive roadmap that includes North Korea halting its missile and nuclear tests, and the US ceasing its military drills on the peninsula.

Moscow believes that Washington, while ostensibly advocating a peace plan, is utilizing the North Korean nuclear issue to contain Russia and China and militarize the Asia-Pacific, the Security Council head stated.

“Washington is very consistent in its plans to deploy elements of its global missile defense system in the region,” Patrushev said. “We can’t rule out that raising tensions around North Korea benefits the United States’ strategic goals.”

US training ‘ex-terrorists’ in Syria

Reports on US training ‘ex-terrorists’ in Syria concerning – Lavrov to RT
Anti-terrorist missions should not be used to topple governments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RT, adding that Moscow has been concerned by recent reports of the US training former terrorists in Syria.

"Attempts to profit from anti-terrorist objectives – which should be common, unified and without double standards – are disturbing,” Lavrov said. These objectives should not be used to promote one’s own agenda, including “changing unwanted regimes,” he added.

Speaking of Russia-US talks on military de-escalation in Syria, Lavrov said he has “mixed feelings” about his western counterpart’s commitment to the Syrian peace process.

“Rex Tillerson used to tell me that the main goal of the US in Syria is defeating ISIS but now it is getting vaguer and vaguer,” the minister added. Instead, the forces are now said to stay in Syria until the start of the political process or, as some US officials claim, the process that involves the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

As Lavrov put it, “the information claiming that some US military bases in Syria have started to train militants, including former members of terrorist groups, is of course quite concerning.”

Earlier in December, Russia’s Reconciliation Center for Syria released a statement accusing the US-led coalition of creating the so-called ‘New Syrian Army.’ The group allegedly comprises remnants of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), the Al-Nusra Front and other militants, and is based at a refugee camp in north-east Syria located 20 kilometers from Al-Shaddadah town. Local refugees, returning to areas freed from IS, say the refugee camp has been used by the coalition as a training ground for militants for at least the past six months.

US Attempts to Encircle Turkey by Increasing Troop Numbers in Region
TEHRAN (FNA)- The latest Pentagon campaign aimed to alter the region’s map in order to encircle Turkey by setting up an ‘American Axis’ that stretches from Hungary all the way to the Persian Gulf.

After the US published its annual National Security Strategy (NSS) report a few days ago which designated China and Russia as competitors, Turkey was left out of the document without being mentioned as either ‘adversary’ or ‘ally’, Yeni Safak reported.

The 68-page document, which was released by the Donald Trump administration, lists Saudi Arabia and Egypt among ‘friend-ally’ countries.

The absence of any mention of Turkey in the US document is the latest in a series of developments that point to the deteriorating relations between the two NATO allies, as Washington continues to openly cooperate with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s Syria offshoot, the PYD, despite repeated objections by Ankara, and continues its attempts to encircle Turkey by increasing the numbers of its troops in the region from 40,000 just a few a months ago, as declared by the Pentagon, to 65,000 today.

The biggest increase in US troops was in Turkish bases as their numbers doubled in just two months, reaching 4,000.

The numbers of American troops deployed to Turkey’s army base in Qatar increased from 3,000 to 7,000 in the last 3 months alone.

The US also has sizeable troops stationed in Bahrain, Kuwait and Syria.

This marks the biggest deployment of US forces to the region since the end of the Cold War, which has been done under the pretext of NATO, in an attempt to encircle Turkey from the West.

The US has also deployed additional troops and munitions to Eastern Europe, in countries such as Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, among others.

The latest Pentagon campaign aims to alter the region’s map in order to encircle Turkey by setting up an ‘American Axis’ that stretches from Hungary through Bosnia Herzegovina, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, all the way toward the Persian Gulf.

Despite repeated reassurances that claim it is being set up as a defensive line against Russia, the true aim for this project is Turkey and Iran.

The US also threatens Turkey from the South through its support for PKK terrorists in Norther Syria, who received over 4,000 truckloads of weapons and munitions from the Pentagon over the past months.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the Southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.

The US has provided the PYD/YPG, which are Syrian branches of the terrorist organization, with over 4,000 trucks containing weapons to reportedly use against the fight with ISIL, despite Ankara’s warnings that they are offshoots of the PKK.

In the coming days, Turkey is preparing to launch an operation to clear PKK terrorists from Afrin and areas under their occupation West of the Euphrates Shield Operations regions.

It is only a matter of time before a possible confrontation between Turk and American troops takes place either in Euphrates Shield regions or in Afrin and Manbij.

SDF Declares War on Turkish Forces in Afrin
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that its forces are well-prepared to face the Turkish army and its affiliated military groups after the Turkish forces threatened to attack the town of Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo, a media outlet reported on Monday.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted Head of the Democratic Unity Joint Party Ayesha Hasou as saying that the entire residents in the town of Afrin are at the highest level of preparedness to defend their town against possible attack by the Turkish troops and their affiliated militants.

Hasou further told the paper that ever since the escalation of crisis in Syria, Afrin has been under siege in three directions and from the side of Turkey, has been under repeated air attacks and different threats.

"Afrin will be turned into Turkish invaders' graveyard similar to Kobani and Raqqa that became the graveyards of ISIL," she underlined.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news reported on Sunday that the Turkey-backed militant groups' missile and artillery units launched a heavy shelling on the villages of Sankarli, Khirbet Shera, Basoufian and Ba'eiyeh in Shera region in Afrin.

Hawar news also quoted al-Bab Military Council as reporting that the Turkish army men have conducted attacks on several villages North of al-Bab, arresting a large number of civilians, including 40 Kurds and transferred them to an unknown destination.

Most of the arrests are happening in the villages of Tal Batal, Qa'ar Kalbin, Jadoud and the small town of Qabassin whose residents are mostly Kurds.

New Details Emerge of Saudi Arabia's Treatment of Saad Hariri

New Details Emerge of Saudi Arabia's Treatment of Saad Hariri
TEHRAN (FNA)- A leading US daily revealed new details of Saudi Arabia's degrading treatment of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri during a recent trip to Riyadh, where the Lebanese leader was coerced into reading a prepared resignation speech under conditions similar to that of a captive.

While some details had already emerged of the circumstances of Hariri's three-week stay in Saudi Arabia, more appeared in a Sunday report by The New York Times, which used information from "a dozen Western, Lebanese and regional officials and associates of Mr. Hariri" to draw a better picture of what happened to him in Riyadh.

"That may have been the last straw for the Saudis," the report said, adding that "Within hours, Mr. Hariri received a message from the Saudi king − come now − ahead of a meeting that had been scheduled days later."

A well-connected Lebanese analyst was cited as saying that Hariri was also invited to spend a day in the desert with the prince.

"But when he (Hariri) landed in Riyadh, Saudi officials took Mr. Hariri to his house and told him to wait − not for the king, but for the prince. He waited, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. No one came," it disclosed.

The next morning, he was "summoned at 8:30 a.m. to the Saudi royal offices − unseemly early, by the kingdom’s standards."

Thinking that he would go camping with the prince, Hariri wore jeans and a T-shirt to the Saudi royal offices.

"But instead he was stripped of his cellphones, separated from all but one of his usual cluster of bodyguards, and shoved and insulted by Saudi security officers," the report said, adding that "Then came the ultimate indignity: He was handed a prewritten resignation speech and forced to read it on Saudi television."

Information on what happened between Hariri's arrival in Riyadh and the resignation is missing. The Times cited Lebanese officials as describing that interval as the "black box."

"They (the Lebanese officials) said they were reluctant to press Mr. Hariri for details. When asked, one of them said, Mr. Hariri just looked down at the table and said it was worse than they knew," according to the report.

Hariri, who runs a private business in Saudi Arabia, was "manhanded" by Saudi officials and was also threatened that he would face "corruption charges," according to one official.

He read the resignation speech he had been given "from a room an official said was down the hall from the prince’s office."

"Lebanese officials," the report said, "began making the rounds to puzzled Western diplomats with an unusual message: We have reason to believe our prime minister has been detained."

Hariri "was eventually placed with Saudi guards in a guesthouse on his own property, forbidden to see his wife and children."

Some Western diplomats were allowed to meet with the Lebanese prime minister there, as, according to the report, "There were two Saudi guards in the room [during those meetings]... and when the diplomats asked if the guards could leave, Mr. Hariri said no, they could stay."

The drama was seen as a Saudi attempt to disrupt the political balance in Lebanon to the disadvantage of Hezbollah, which shared power both in the parliament and Hariri's government with other Lebanese factions.

The Times report pointed to how Mohammed bin Salman was looking to use Hariri as a "pawn" against Iran, "as if he were an employee [of Riyadh] and not a sovereign leader."

But instead, the Lebanese people of all political inclinations soon came out with massive support for their prime minister, demanding that he safely return and continue work. Hezbollah's Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah also voiced support for Hariri.

The report said Western officials were wondering what Saudi Arabia "hoped to accomplish with all this intrigue."

"Several do not rule out the possibility that they aimed to foment internal unrest in Lebanon, or even war," it added.

The report said Saudi [Persian] Gulf Affairs Minister Thaber al-Sabhan, who is believed to have been a key figure in the Hariri scheme, "got a withering reception" on a visit later to Washington, where US officials "demanded that Mr. Sabhan explain why Riyadh was destabilizing Lebanon."

"Now, Mr. Hariri remains in office with new popularity, and Hezbollah is stronger than before," the Times added.

Hariri abruptly declared his resignation from a then-unknown location in Saudi Arabia and from Saudi-owned television on November 4, accusing Iran and Hezbollah of interfering in the region and signaling that that was his reason to quit.

But Lebanese President Michel Aoun, who suspected early on that Hariri had resigned of his free will, refused to accept his resignation and demanded his return from Saudi Arabia first. Lebanese intelligence sources soon concluded that Hariri was under restrictions in Riyadh.

That drama ended when Hariri returned to Lebanon on November 22 and rescinded his resignation on December 5.

Hariri, in the meantime, has been continuing work with renewed support and stronger unity among Lebanese people and political groups.

US $50,000 Reward for Iraqi Anti-Terror Leader Revealed
TEHRAN (FNA)- After about ten years, a document was revealed that shows the US had put a $50,000 reward for any kind of help to arrest Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba leader Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi whose group was influential in defeating the ISIL terrorist group in Iraq and Syria.

The office of Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba in Tehran said Sheikh Akram al-Kaabi fought against Saddam Hussein, the Iraqi dictator, and after his fall he fought against the US occupying forces in Iraq.

The picture revealed belongs to the time he had escaped from US custody in Iraq, after which he was listed a wanted by the occupiers of Iraq, he said.

In the 10 years, the US Army and security organizations had offered $50,000 for any help that result in his detention.

He is now the leader of Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba that defends the Iraqis and Syrians.

The US congress is now trying to impose sanctions on the group.

Ex-Iranian Envoy: US Plotting to Assassinate General Soleimani since 2003
TEHRAN (FNA)- Former Iranian Ambassador to Jordan Mostafa Moslehzadeh revealed that the US has been hatching plots for 14 years to assassinate Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Major General Qassem Soleimani.

"Based on US documents, the Americans have been seeking to assassinate him (General Soleimani) since 2003. This plot has been officially raised at the US Congress. It has also been said that abduction of a number of Iranian diplomats in foreign countries had been conducted because abductors had thought that General Soleimani was among them," Moslehzadeh, now a university lecturer, said, addressing a forum in Tehran on Sunday.

He noted that the US considers General Soleimani as the cause of its defeats and failures in the region.

CIA Director Mike Pompeo acknowledged early this month that he had written a letter to General Soleimani to warn him about the US interests in Iraq, but the general refused to read it.

“I sent a note. I sent it because he had indicated that forces under his control might in fact threaten the US interests in Iraq,” Pompeo made the announcement at a defense forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute in Simi Valley, California.

"He refused to open the letter-didn’t break my heart to be honest with you," Pompeo added.

Battered by foreign-backed terrorist groups such as the ISIL, Iraq's central government has sought the assistance of its Muslim neighbor, Iran, to defend its borders and bring security back to the country.

"What we were communicating to him (General Soleimani) in that letter was that we will hold him and Iran accountable ... and we wanted to make sure that he and the leadership of Iran understood that in a way that was crystal clear.”

In a recent congratulatory message to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, General Soleimani hailed the “great victory” over the ISIL terrorists.

General Soleimani in his message last month blamed the US for all crimes committed by the ISIL terrorist group in the regional states, and said the Iraqi and Syrian governments and armies as well as the Hashd al-Shaabi (Iraqi popular forces) and the Lebanese resistance group led by Seyed Hassan Nasrallah certainly played a decisive role in defeating the ISIL.

"Definitely, the valuable role of the nation and servant government of the Islamic Republic, specially the honorable president, parliament, the defense ministry and the military, law enforcement police and security organizations of our country in supporting the aforementioned governments and nations is appreciable," he added, stressing the important role of the wise leadership of Ayatollah Khamenei and senior Iraqi Shiite cleric Ayatollah Ali Sistani in the victory over the ISIL terrorist group.

"...Having accomplished the Albu Kamal liberation operation, the ISIL's last stronghold (in Syria), pulling down the US-Zionist (ISIL) group's flag and hoisting the Syrian flag, I declare the end of" ISIL control, General Soleimani concluded.

US to Resume Aid for YPG in 2018 as Trump Approves $393mln Syria Weapons List

US to Resume Aid for YPG in 2018 as Trump Approves $393mln Syria Weapons List
TEHRAN (FNA)- US President Donald Trump has approved providing weapons worth $393 million to its partners in Syria despite Ankara's concerns over the continued delivery of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to PKK's Syrian offshoot the People's Protection Units (YPG).

The US President signed the list prepared by Pentagon in May on Dec. 12, 18 days after his phone conversation with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during which he was quoted as "openly instructing his generals to no longer give weapons to the YPG, Daily Sabah reported.

"He openly said that this absurdity should have ended much earlier," Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu had told reporters after the phone call.

The list included a total of 12,000 AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles worth $6.3 million, 60,000 Kalashnikov clips worth $420,000 and 6,000 machineguns worth $20.3 million.

The weapons list did not give any direct reference to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) or its dominating group YPG but instead mentioned the Vetted Syrian Opposition (VSO).

Ankara considers the YPG a terror organization because of its organic links with the PKK terror organization.

Accordingly, sophisticated weapons will continue to be sent to Syria in 2018, including thousands of anti-tank rocket launchers, heat seeking missiles and rocket launchers.

In addition, some $1.2 billion budget was reserved for Iraq and another $500 million was reserved for Syria as a part of the train-equip fund in 2018, according to the list.

The Pentagon's Syria strategy for 2018 also outlined an increase in the number of Arab elements within the SDF.

According to the budget list, there are a total of 25,000 opposition forces supported as a part of the train and equip program in Syria. That number is planned to be increased to 30,000 in 2018.

Arab Diplomat: Jordan Mulling Defection from Saudi-Led Coalition against Yemen
TEHRAN (FNA)- Arab diplomatic sources reported that Jordan is studying ways to defect the Saudi-led coalition which has launched a devastating war against Yemen after Riyadh and Abu Dhabi broke their promises to supply Amman with financial aid.

The Arabic-language Al-Morasel Net quoted an Arab diplomat as saying on Sunday that Jordan entered the war against Syria to coax the Saudi and UAE officials into financial support for Amman but "they didn’t pay attention to this sacrifice".

According to the source, although Jordan sustained military loss and damage in the war against Yemen and one of its F-16 fighter jets crashed during the war, it has not received any money from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and the Jordanian leaders have come to the conclusion that the Yemen war has only defamed them and left negative impact on Jordan's economy.

The diplomat predicted that Jordan would declare its defection from the Saudi-led coalition suddenly and would change its policies in Syria and Iraq.

In a relevant analysis on Saturday, Abdel Bari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm newspaper, slammed Amman's mistaken policy of compliance with the US to implement its plots against the region, and stressed that time is now ripe for Amman to send its foreign minister to Tehran for resumption of relations.

"Jordan's miscalculations about the US plots against Syria and other regional states was a big mistake, specially when its presence in the US front during the past 7 years brought nothing for Amman but isolation and victimization by its Arab allies, including Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf Arab littoral states, and now it's time for Jordan to make up for its mistakes," Atwan wrote.

He praised the upcoming visits by Speaker of Jordan’s House of Representatives Atef al-Tarawneh to Syria, and Iran to participate in a parliamentary conference on Palestine, but said it is insufficient.

"Jordan should send its foreign minister to the two countries and pave the ground for the official resumption of ties with them," Atwan stressed.

Tarawneh, met with the Chargé d’affaires of the Syrian Embassy earlier this week to congratulate his army on their victory over the so-called ISIL terrorist group.

The speaker told the Chargé d’affaires that Syria and Jordan are on the same side when it comes to fighting terrorism and that the solution to end the war in the country is a political settleme nt.

Tarawneh further called on the Arab world to invite the Syrian government to rejoin the Arab Parliament’s regular meetings.

He concluded by saying that Syria and Jordan should collaborate in their fight against terrorism.

Turkish Media Reveal UAE FM's Collaboration with Mossad in Assassination of Hamas Leader

Turkish Media Reveal UAE FM's Collaboration with Mossad in Assassination of Hamas Leader
TEHRAN (FNA)- UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan has collaborated with the Israeli spy agency in assassination of a senior Hamas leader, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, Turkish media disclosed.

The Turkish-language Habar 7 newspaper reported on Saturday that the UAE top diplomat has betrayed the Palestinians and facilitated Mossad agents' mission to assassinate al-Mabhouh.

It added that the assassins of the Hamas leader entered the UAE with fake passports and injected poison into Mabhouh's body which caused his muscle paralysis, destroyed respiratory system and then led to his death. Mabhouh had several times in the past survived assassination attempts.

Al-Mabhouh, a founding member of Hamas' military wing, was found dead in his Dubai hotel room on January 20, 2010.

The Israeli government's refusal to comment on the death once more gained worldwide publicity for Mossad, its intelligence service.

After Mabhouh's assassination Hamas said it's convinced the likely perpetrators were members of the Mossad, Israel's intelligence and security agency, adding that it would allow Dubai authorities to complete their investigation before making any official announcements that could compromise their work.

The Turkish daily report came after Ankara summoned a United Arab Emirates diplomat last week over a recent social media post insulting an Ottoman-era governor that was shared by the UAE's foreign minister.

Acting UAE ambassador Hawla Ali al-Shamsi was summoned to the Turkish foreign ministry, sources from the ministry told Anadolu news agency on condition of anonymity because of restrictions on speaking to the media.

The diplomat was informed of Turkey's concern over the post retweeted by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The tweet was aimed at Fahreddin Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Medina, now in Saudi Arabia, from 1916-1919.

It suggested the Ottoman governor had committed abuses against the local population and pilfered property.

Medina, which houses the Prophet Muhammad's tomb and is revered by Muslims, was ruled by the Ottoman Turks until they were defeated by the British and their Arab allies in World War I.

In the post, Turks were accused of stealing "most of the manuscripts of the Mahmudiyah library in the city" and sending them to Turkey.

"These are Erdogan's ancestors and their history with Arab Muslims," the tweet said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday said: "It's no coincidence that those who take pride in keeping the company of tyrants - at a time when Muslims are under violent attack - would target Fahreddin Pasha."

Erdogan said "some Arab leaders" were antagonizing his country in order to "cover their ignorance and their incompetence".

Anti-Arms Trade Group Calls on London to End Support for 'World’s Largest Buyer of UK Arms'
TEHRAN (FNA)- UK-based NGO Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) asked Prime Minister Theresa May and other British politicians to end their political and military support for Saudi Arabia regime, as Riyadh's air campaign against its neighbor has so far killed more than 15,000 Yemenis.

“For 1,000 days, Saudi forces have inflicted a terrible bombardment and devastating destruction on Yemen. Thousands have been killed, and millions displaced, yet the Saudi military remains by far the world’s largest buyer of UK arms," Andrew Smith of Campaign against Arms Trade said.

“Any aid that is reaching those in need must be welcomed, but the best thing that Theresa May and her colleagues can do for the Yemeni people are to stop the arms sales and end their political and military support for the Saudi regime,” Smith added.

CAAT reported early November that Britain’s export of bombs and missiles to Saudi Arabia has increased by nearly 500 percent since the start of the kingdom’s deadly aggression on Yemen, adding that in the two years leading up to the war on Yemen, the UK government had approved £33 million worth of licenses covering the sale of bombs, missiles and countermeasures to the Riyadh regime.

It said in the two years since the beginning of the Saudi-led bombing campaign in 2015, the figure rose to £1.9 billion, up by 457 percent, disclosing that the UK government licenses covering aircraft, including Eurofighter jets, have soared by 70 percent to £2.6 billion in the same period.

Despite the humanitarian crisis, the UK government has continued to arm and support Riyadh. Since the ongoing bombardment began in 2015, London has licensed £4.6 billion worth of arms to Saudi Arabia.

In mid-December, more than 350 high-profile figures marked the 1,000th day of the Yemen war by calling on leaders of France, the US and the UK to stop “stoking the flames of war” and instead use their seats on the UN security council to act as peace brokers.

Nobel peace prize laureates, politicians, diplomats, former military generals, religious leaders and celebrities issued a statement addressed to US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, stressing that Yemen is at a tipping point.

Also, Secretary of State for International Development Penny Mordaunt said mid-December that Britain might begin standing up to Saudi Arabia over the Yemen crisis, as she signaled London could be losing patience with its major Middle East ally and will begin to lean on Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen since March 2015 to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 15,300 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

According to several reports, the Saudi-led air campaign against Yemen has driven the impoverished country towards humanitarian disaster, as Saudi Arabia's deadly campaign prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

The cholera outbreak in Yemen which began in April, has also claimed over 2,200 lives and has infected about one million people, as the nation has been suffering from what the World Health Organization (WHO) describes as the “largest epidemic in the world” amid a non-stop bombing campaign led by Saudi Arabia. Also Riyadh's deadly campaign prevented the patients from traveling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

According to reports, the cholera epidemic in Yemen, which is the subject of a Saudi Arabian war and total embargo, is the largest recorded in modern history.

Aid officials have also warned of the spread of diphtheria in war-torn Yemen, as WHO and officials with the international medical charity Doctors Without Border, announced that the diphtheria spread is inevitable in Yemen due to low vaccination rates, lack of access to medical care and so many people moving around and coming in contact with those infected.

The United Nations had described the current level of hunger in Yemen as “unprecedented,” emphasizing that 17 million people are now food insecure in the country.

A recent survey showed that almost one third of families have gaps in their diets, and hardly ever consume foods like pulses, vegetables, fruit, dairy products or meat, while the humanitarian food aid is reaching only a third of Yemen’s population.

Aid agency CARE also declared that more than 22 million people in Yemen are in need of humanitarian aid, 7 million people face famine-like conditions.

More than 3 million pregnant and nursing women and children under 5 need support to prevent or cure malnutrition.

The United Nations has also warned that 8.4 million people in war-torn Yemen are “a step away from famine”, as Saudi Arabia and its allies are ceaselessly pounding the impoverished country.

"The lives of millions of people, including 8.4 million Yemenis who are a step away from famine, hinge on our ability to continue our operations and to provide health, safe water, shelter and nutrition support," Jamie McGoldrick, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Yemen, said in a statement on Monday.

"The continuing blockade of ports is limiting supplies of fuel, food and medicines, dramatically increasing the number of vulnerable people who need help," he added.

The United Nations had warned that millions of people will die in Yemen, in what will be the world's worst famine crisis in decades, unless the Saudi-led military coalition ends its devastating blockade and allows aid into the country.

Aid agency CARE warned, as the country marks 1,000 days since conflict began, Yemen risks sliding into famine and further disease outbreaks unless all the country’s ports are fully reopened.

“The situation is appalling,” CARE’s Country Director in Yemen Johan Mooij said, adding that “Today millions of Yemenis are facing multiple crises of war, hunger, disease outbreaks and recent blockades on fuel and commercial imports”, Reliefweb reported.

Mooij stressed that while some land, sea and air ports had recently reopened, the country’s main ports remained closed to commercial imports.

International aid agency Oxfam warned that Yemen was pushed ever closer to famine after 1,000 days of a brutal war, exacerbated by a crippling blockade of its key ports which is starving its people of food, fuel and medicine.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that on average, some 5,000 people were falling ill daily, with children under 15 accounting for 41 percent of all suspected cases while people over 60 represented 30 percent of fatalities. Incumbent Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was also once given a $400 box of Wagyu meat by the King Abdullah II of Jordan とあります。

Report: Arab Rulers Buy Lavish Gifts to Curry Favor with British Politicians
TEHRAN (FNA)- A report exposed how certain Arab states have continued to shower British politicians with luxury gifts in an attempt to curry favor and buy their support.

Those states include Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Jordan, and Oman, the Middle East Eye (MEE) news portal reported on Saturday, citing newly released UK government data.

Prime Minister Theresa May, whom Saudi Arabia has conferred with the Order of King Abdulaziz Al Saud, has received several gifts from the kingdom, including an ornament, a clock, and a medal, the report said.

Saudi Arabia “has splashed out on 20 luxuries Christmas hampers for Conservative Party ministers since 2010,” the MEE further reported.

The United Arab Emirates has also been providing British ministers with various gifts.

The emirates have offered luxury Christmas hampers, rugs, and a $2,600 designer briefcase to Tobias Ellwood, Britain’s defense minister. In December 2012, the country's government bought former British foreign secretary William Hague a rug and Alistair Burt, the UK’s Middle East minister, both a hamper and an IPad.

In July, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry gave Burt a Rolex watch worth nearly $8,000.

Incumbent Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was also once given a $400 box of Wagyu meat by the King Abdullah II of Jordan. Another Arab ruler gave the British minister tins of Caspian caviar, worth more than $1,000 in total, when they met the same month.

Since 2015, Britain has been providing state-of-the-art weaponry and logistical support to Saudi bombardment of Yemen, which also enlists the Emirati military. More than 15,300 have died since the bombing started.

The MEE went on to cite rights campaigners as blasting the trend of the Arab showering of the politicians with gifts as a means of influence peddling by governments, some of whom have incurred huge international outcry over the human rights abuses at home and abroad.

"These gifts aren't being given out of any sense of generosity. They are being given to buy friends and increase influence," Andrew Smith of Campaign against Arms Trade (CAAT) stressed.

"If repressive regimes and brutal dictatorships are giving gifts to MPs, then it is time for those politicians to think about the messages they're sending out, and to stop offering such intimate political support to human rights abusers," Smith added.

Sayed Ahmed Alwadaei, director of the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy said "Many of these regimes have consistently repressed democracy and violated human rights. These lavish gifts are a transparent ploy to influence the UK's foreign policy so that it favors the regimes rather than the people of the [Persian] Gulf."

Washington’s humiliation at UN is sign of a washed-up superpower

Washington’s humiliation at UN is sign of a washed-up superpower
The humiliating condemnation of the US this week at the UN General Assembly over its Jerusalem policy revealed both Washington’s contempt for democracy and international law, and just how isolated America has become globally.

The overwhelming rejection of President Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital by 128 member nations at the UN is a signal event of how far US international standing has slumped.

Leader of the free world? More like a miscreant whose overbearing megalomaniacal ego is no longer tolerable to virtually everyone else.

Even close US allies among the NATO military alliance voted against Washington’s position. Britain, France, and Germany joined with other international powers, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Brazil, to repudiate Trump’s decision taken earlier this month to recognize Jerusalem.

In the end, only seven marginal states (no disrespect meant) voted with the US and Israel: Guatemala, Honduras, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, and Togo. Another 35 nations chose to abstain, including Canada and Australia, which would typically openly back America’s Mideast policies.

The outcome was in spite of shameless arm-twisting by the US ahead of the General Assembly vote, when President Trump threatened to cut off financial aid to nations going against American policy.

The day before the UN vote Thursday, Trump said: “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care.”

In what has become a sulking mantra of Trump’s White House, he added: “We’re not going to be taken advantage of anymore.”

Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan – another key NATO ally – denounced Washington’s attempt at bribery, saying the US was trying to “buy votes.” He called on all countries to not sell democratic rights for “petty dollars” and for them to uphold past UN resolutions designating the status of Jerusalem as a matter to be resolved through Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Trump’s unilateral recognition on December 6 of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital overturned decades of international consensus, as well as Washington’s own stated policy of brokering a historic compromise between the Israelis and Palestinians.
The abrupt change in official US policy has provoked particular consternation among Arab and Muslim nations who together comprise nearly a quarter of the world’s population.

The General Assembly’s resolution this week is non-binding, meaning it has no mandatory legal power and therefore is largely symbolic. Nevertheless, the symbolism speaks volumes of changing times where the US has fallen spectacularly from grace in the eyes of the world.

The US declared truculently before the vote that it did not care and it would ignore the result come what may. Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu lavished praise on the US for its support and dismissed the UN resolution as “preposterous.”

Earlier in the week, on Monday, a draft resolution also rejecting Trump’s Jerusalem declaration was put to the UN Security Council and was approved by 14 sitting members. But American ambassador Nikki Haley cast her country’s veto to quash that resolution, which would have been legally binding.

Haley’s remarks to the General Assembly before Thursday’s vote highlighted Washington’s brazen contempt for democratic rights. In sinister tones, she warned that the US “was taking note of names” and reiterated Trump’s threats of taking retaliatory measures by cutting off financial aid. If looks could kill, Haley’s demeanor was armed and dangerous.

The American envoy also displayed a twisted logic that was as arrogant as it was flawed. She rebuked all nations for “attacking” the US “sovereign right” to nominate Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The fact is, it is the US which has attacked international consensus and UN resolutions regarding Jerusalem’s neutral status.

Haley also claimed the “will of the American people” was being assaulted by the UN. Her claim is not backed up by any polls. Indeed one recent poll conducted in November, just before Trump made his announcement, shows a big majority – 63 percent – of the American public are against any such move to recognize Jerusalem as the undivided Israeli capital.

So, if anything, it is Haley and the Trump administration that is snubbing the “will of the American people.”

For decades the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has galvanized world opinion more than any other issue. The preponderance of UN resolutions shows an international consensus in favor of recognizing Palestinian national rights. Yet, the United States this week slammed the UN for being biased against Israel.

What the US doesn’t seem to recognize is that the consensus at the UN is a reflection of international democracy. Washington’s disdain toward majority world opinion shows its underlying contempt for democratic principles and international law. The official American attitude is: if you don’t support our position, no matter how questionable that position, then your opinion is not valid.

However, this week shows how much Washington’s moral authority has deteriorated. Even among allies and foes, there was a common position of rejecting Washington’s unilateralism. Saudi Arabia and the Sunni Arab Gulf states lined up with arch-enemies Iran and Syria to reject the US position on Jerusalem.

Nations that are large recipients of US development aid were not cowered by threats of financial punishment: Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Pakistan joined with poor African countries, Ethiopia, Kenya and Niger, among others, to repudiate Washington. Yemen, war-torn and famine-stricken, also cast its vote against the US.

The overwhelming rejection by the General Assembly of American policy not only shows how out of line Washington is. It also shows an increasing number of states are willing to openly defy Washington’s bully tactics.

Ironically, President Trump earlier this week declared in his newly published National Security Strategy: “America is again leading the world.”

His signature on the portentous document testified: “Our founding principles have made the United States of America among the greatest forces for good in history… Around the world, nations and individuals admire what America stands for. We treat people equally and value and uphold the rule of law.”

Such lofty claims seem to be only true in the febrile imagination of American officialdom.
In reality, America’s virtuous pretensions are seen increasingly to be a ridiculous sham, flagrantly contradicted by its boorish, thuggish behavior.

There was a time perhaps when the US could command global leadership. That self-declared global authority was always over-rated, but there was a veneer of plausible appearance and credibility in Washington’s claims.

Now, Washington sounds like a pathetic, deluded narcissist, exposed by its own blatant contempt for the very principles it espouses to uphold: democratic rights, free speech, the rule of law.

This week at the UN General Assembly, the United States is no longer a world leader. It is more like a rogue state whose delusional greatness is belied by sordid acts of bribery, bullying, and intimidation. A tyrant whose time is over.

Most telling is that Washington’s threats of intimidation and “name taking” no longer have power. The threats are seen as just more bluffing and puffing by a washed-up superpower.

Russia sends more S-400 SAMs to Far East amid N. Korea tensions (VIDEO)
An air defense regiment in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East has upgraded its arsenal with advanced S-400 system batteries. This comes amid the ongoing crisis involving North Korea, which borders Russia and is 130km from the city.

The 1533th Regiment was previously armed with three older S-300SP systems, but received the modern S-400 Triumf batteries this year. The S-400 has a range of 600km, compared to the 400km range of the older surface-to-air missile, and has better target tracking and simultaneous engagement capabilities. The service members trained to use them earlier in 2017 and confirmed their expertise at the Kapustin Yar range in central Russia, the regiment commander, Col. Aleksey Morokov, told journalists after a deployment ceremony.

The regiment is part of Russia’s air defense command in the Eastern Military District. Its fellow 589th Air Defense Regiment, which belongs to the same division and is stationed in the city of Nakhodka 80km to the east, has had S-400 batteries for some time. But the new batteries in Vladivostok will boost the Russian military’s ability to scan airspace in the region, raising its operational awareness.

Tensions have been running high over North Korea’s nuclear and missile tests, as the US resorts to belligerent rhetoric and demonstrations of force in an attempt to force Pyongyang to disarm. Russia and China, both of which border North Korea and would likely suffer from a large-scale war in the region, are calling on Washington to negotiate with Pyongyang a solution which would respect each nation’s security concerns.

ISIS has over 10,000 fighters in Afghanistan, more arriving from Syria & Iraq – Moscow
The terrorist group Islamic State has over 10,000 loyal fighters in Afghanistan, and Moscow believes the US may be underestimating their threat, Russia’s special envoy says.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) was pushed out of their home base in Syria and Iraq this year by separate military operations of a US-led coalition, and the Syrian Army backed by Russia. Many of the IS fighters who fled those countries ended up in Afghanistan, where the terrorist group has as many as 10,000 troops at the moment, Zamir Kabulov, the head of the Middle East department in the Russian Foreign Ministry, said.

“Russia was among the first nations to ring alarm about the expansion of IS into Afghanistan,” he told RIA Novosti. “Lately IS has boosted its presence in the country. Our estimate is that their force there is stronger than 10,000 troops and is continuing to grow. That includes new fighters with combat experience received in Syria and Iraq.”

IS forces are strongest in the north of Afghanistan on the border with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan – a point of concern for Russia, which has close historic ties with both nations, Kabulov added.

“IS goals are definitely to expand its influence outside of Afghanistan, which they use as a staging ground. This poses a significant security threat for Central Asia and southern parts of Russia,” Kabulov stressed.

The diplomat said Russia and the US have a difference of opinion about how big a threat IS poses in Afghanistan and Central Asia. Washington, he said, is focused on fighting the Taliban and is in the process of alienating other nations in the region, which America criticizes for failing to put enough pressure on the militant movement, while overlooking its own failures.

“Considering the realities on the ground, which is that the Taliban controls half of the country, one can ask the question: does the US pull its weight? Russia stands for cooperation with international partners based on equality and which takes into account national interests of all nations of the region,” Kabulov said, apparently referring to Washington’s resent showdown with Pakistan.

The US accused Islamabad of failing to properly fight the Taliban and threatened it with repercussions unless Pakistan ramps up counterinsurgency operations in its tribal areas. The criticism sparked some anti-America sentiment among Pakistani military commanders.

Kabulov said Moscow was prepared to work together with Washington to foster stability in Afghanistan, and said it was America’s decision to stop such cooperation, not Russia’s. In April, Moscow invited the US to take part in Russia-hosted Afghanistan peace talks, but the US declined to participate.

‘Accomplice in igniting war’: Moscow says US crosses a line with lethal arms supplies to Ukraine
The intention by Washington to provide lethal arms to Ukraine ‘crosses a line’ and pushes Kiev towards bloodshed, a senior Russian diplomat said, accusing the US of playing the role of warmonger in the Ukrainian conflict.

The move by the US government is an escalation compared to the previous practice of providing weapons to Kiev through contracts with American arms producers, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in a statement. “In a sense, the US has crossed a line.”

The Russian diplomat added that Washington can no longer claim the role of mediator in the Ukrainian conflict, because in fact it’s an “accomplice in igniting a war.” He said Moscow believes there is no use in appealing to the common sense of American politicians, since many of them are currently “blinded by Russophobia and eagerly applaud the Ukrainian nationalist punitive battalions.”

Ryabkov’s remarks are in line with a string of condemnation of Washington’s move by other Russian officials. Fellow Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said the US arming of Ukraine undermines the 2015 Minsk agreement, which was negotiated with the help of Germany and France, and laid down a roadmap for resolution of the conflict. The agreement’s implementation was stalled by Kiev’s refusal to uphold its part of the bargain, which included amnesty for rebel fighters and special autonomous status for the regions they control.

Aleksey Pushkov, member of the Russian Senate security committee, warned that the US may find itself dragged into direct confrontation with the rebels in Ukraine. The delivery of US-made weapon systems will require training of Ukrainian troops on the ground, and US advisers involved in such a program may be targeted by a Ukrainian provocation, he said.

The US “has enough problems already to allow itself to be involved in adventures of the [Ukrainian] regime,” he said. “And we know too well how adventurous Kiev may be.”
Pushkov said the “war party” members in Ukraine may be interested in re-igniting hostilities in the east ahead of the 2019 presidential election. Such an escalation would draw public attention away from the many failures of the government and whip up public support for hardline politicians.

Considering that Ukraine has been sidelined by other issues such as the crisis on the Korean Peninsula and the row over Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, renewed violence would also help Kiev return to the list of priorities of world powers, Pushkov added.

On Friday, the US State Department announced the US would supply “defensive weapons” to Ukraine, saying it would help “deter further aggression.” The weapons would reportedly include anti-tank missiles, which Kiev has been asking for from Washington for years. The US government earlier approved a purchase by Kiev of sniper rifles and other small arms from US manufacturers.
