Britain Resumes Financial Support for Terrorists in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Syrian media sources revealed on Thursday that the British government has dropped its so-called ban on financial support for the Free Police in areas controlled by al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) in Northern Syria.

Aleppo “Free” police chief, Brigadier Adib Shalaf, was quoted as saying by Syria's al-Watan newspaper that Britain has resumed its financial aid "but not through official channels".

The British Foreign Office said earlier this month that it had stopped financing the Justice and Community Security project known as Ajax, which provides support for the Syrian Free Police, which is deployed in a number of Syrian areas.

The British decision came against the backdrop of information published by the British network “BBC” which accused the free police to deal with the militant factions, in addition to accusing it of human rights violations, and financial corruption.

“The Free police have been getting support from Adam Smith International since early 2014, and Britain is not the only one to support,” Schlaff said. “There are other countries supporting the project, the United States, the Netherlands, Canada, Germany and Denmark.”

The Free Police in Idlib, Aleppo, Western and Southern Aleppo, and the northern suburbs of Aleppo have 3,300 police and officers, most of them dissident police who have been trained in Turkey and cooperate with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) terrorist group.

Turkish Daily: Ankara Seeks to Occupy Large Areas of Syrian Territories
TEHRAN (FNA)- Ankara's military operations will be conducted in regions beyond Afrin in Aleppo province with the participation of 35,000 forces, a Turkish daily revealed on Thursday, adding that the country wants to occupy vast areas in Syria.

The Turkish-language Yeni Safak newspaper disclosed that the imminent military operations against Kurds in Northern Syria will not be limited to Afrin in Northern Aleppo and will extend to Deir Balout and Sam'an castle in the West to the towns of Zoufiyan, Davir and Fila in the East.

It added that 35,000 forces, including 20,000 army soldiers and 15,000 Ankara-affiliated militants, will participate in the operations.

According to the report, Russia is trying to persuade the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to deliver control of Afrin and Tal Rafat to the Syrian government with the aim of keeping Turkey away from the region but the Kurds are insisting on the battle against Turks.

The SDF announced earlier this week that its forces are well-prepared to face the Turkish army and its affiliated military groups after the Turkish forces threatened to attack the town of Afrin in Northwestern Aleppo, a media outlet reported.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat daily quoted Head of the Democratic Unity Joint Party Ayesha Hasou as saying that the entire residents in the town of Afrin are at the highest level of preparedness to defend their town against possible attack by the Turkish troops and their affiliated militants.

Hasou further told the paper that ever since the escalation of crisis in Syria, Afrin has been under siege in three directions and from the side of Turkey, has been under repeated air attacks and different threats.

"Afrin will be turned into Turkish invaders' graveyard similar to Kobani and Raqqa that became the graveyards of ISIL," she underlined.

Lattakia: Al-Nusra Front's Grad Missiles Destroyed by Russian Air Defense System in Air
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Grad missiles fired by the Al-Nusra Front (Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at or the Levant Liberation Board) were blown up by the air defense systems deployed in the Russians' airbase in Humeimim.

The Arabic-language Moraseloun news website reported on Wednesday that the Russian forces stationed in Humeimim airbase intercepted the Grad missiles, using the Pantsir defense shield. The missiles were fired against the villages near Jabalah region in Lattakia province.

The missiles were fired by the terrorists from Badama region in Southwestern Idlib and were destroyed over Jabalah airspace.

The Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria announced earlier this month that the country's forces deployed in Humeimim Airbase in Lattakia province will take part in military operations against the Al-Nusra Front in Idlib province.

"Our international partners are committed to root out the Al-Nusra terrorist organization, in the meantime, the Russia Air Force is committed to take part in the campaign against the Al-Nusra with its forces in Humeimim airbase," The Russian Center said.

The center said that Washington is insisting on regime change in Syria, adding, "The US officials' recent remarks over their intention to remain in Syria have increased our worries."

Diplomat Slams Russian Base Shelling as Provocation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stressed that attack against Russian base in Syria might be a staged provocation aimed at derailing the Syrian National Dialogue Congress.

Zakharova told reporters at a press briefing on Thursday that Missile attack against Humaymim base by terrorists could be a staged provocation aimed at derailing the Syrian National Dialogue Congress to be held in Sochi, TASS reported.

"We see yesterday’s attempt to attack the Russian military at the Humaymim base as another link in the chain of ongoing and, perhaps, staged provocations involving terrorists and extremists from the Syrian opposition aimed at disrupting the positive trends in the development of the situation in Syria and, in particular, at creating obstacles to convening and holding the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi on January 29-30," she said.

Russian Missile System Tracked US Fighter Jets in East Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Armed Forces Air Defense Troops commander Alexander Leonov announced that US Air Force aircraft in Eastern Syria were multiple times detected and automatically followed.

"As part of its military operations, US Air Force strategic reconnaissance planes and bombers were multiple times detected and automatically followed," Lt. Gen. Leonov told Russia’s Izvestiya newspaper in a piece published Thursday.

The general said the surface-to-air system was deployed to Syria in October 2016 year to "expand control over the eastern Syrian airspace, prevent enemy airstrikes at the Hmeymim airfield and the Tartus logistics base."

He added that US warplanes operating in Eastern Syria were multiple times in crosshairs of a Russian S-300V4 air defense system.

He stressed that US planes reacted "nervously" to being tracked by Russia’s air defense unit from the distance of 200 to 300 kilometers (124 to 186 miles).

The system and its personnel were withdrawn to their permanent deployment site in June this year.

State Secretary: US Needs to Work With Russia on Syria But Bashar Assad Must Go
TEHRAN (FNA)- US State Secretary Rex Tillerson admitted in an op-ed for a local newspaper that Washington has no illusions about Moscow but will work together with it to promote mutual interests in Syria.

Writing in end-of-the-year article for the New York Times on Wednesday, Tillerson accused Russia of hostile actions against its neighbors and his nation’s Western allies.

"While we are on guard against Russian aggression, we recognize the need to work with Russia where mutual interests intersect. Nowhere is that more evident than in Syria," he wrote.

He said Washington expected Russia to deliver on its commitments to create a new future for Syria, after Russian President Vladimir Putin backed the UN-led process in Geneva, Switzerland.

"We are confident that the fulfillment of these talks will produce a Syria that is free of Bashar al-Assad and his family," he added.

Russia has been actively involved in the Syrian peace process, volunteering to act as a ceasefire guarantor and proposing to host a Syrian dialogue congress in Sochi next month. Moscow has demanded that President Assad’s role in Syria's future be determined by its people.

Russian FM: US Forces Must Leave Syrian Territory Completely
TEHRAN (FNA)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the US forces must leave Syrian territory completely.

Speaking to Interfax news agency on Thursday, Lavrov added that the UN Security Council has not approved the work of the United States and the coalition it leads in Syria, nor has been invited by the Syrian legitimate government, emphasizing that they (Russian side) are Judging from the fact that the Americans should leave the Syrian territory once the remnants of the terrorists are completely destroyed and that will happen very soon.

On the statement of the US Defense Secretary, James Matisse, about the intention of US troops to stay in Syria until achieving progress in the political settlement, Lavrov pointed out that such statement is “surprising” because it means that Washington reserves the right to determine the progress and wants to keep control over part of Syrian territory to achieve the result it wants.

The Russian Minister affirmed that according to the UNSC No.2254, which the United States supported, the decision on the future of Syria can only be taken by the Syrian people and this is what Moscow will start with in its contacts with the Americans later.

He also expressed his satisfaction that cooperation with the US in Syria is possible if the Americans’ goal is to fight terrorism.

Russia: Erdogan's Claims That Assad Is A 'Terrorist' Have No Legal Basis
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Russian Foreign Ministry commented on the recent statement of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad a "terrorist".

"Such evaluations do not have any legal basis… Such statements are groundless," Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova said during a briefing on Thursday, Sputnik reported.

She added that the representatives of the Syrian government are members of the UN and represent the country's government in the UN Security Council.

Erdogan labeled Assad “a terrorist” in a news conference in Tunis on Wednesday.

“Assad is definitely a terrorist who has carried out state terrorism,” Erdogan said, adding that “It is impossible to continue with Assad. How can we embrace the future with a Syrian President who has killed close to a million of his citizens?”

Erdogan underlined that peace would not come to Syria while Assad remained its President and that the Syrian government should play no part in designing the country’s political future.

Damascus on Wednesday held President of the Turkey responsible for shedding the Syrian blood, saying that its aggression and the entry of the Ankara forces to the Syrian territory reveals one image of the Turkey’s support to Takfiri terrorism.

Once again, Erdogan misleads the public opinion with his political bubbles in a desperate attempt to absolve himself from crimes committed against the Syrian people through providing unlimited support to the terrorist groups in Syria, which has become clear to the entire world, an official source at Foreign and Expatriates Ministry announced.

It affirmed that Erdogan, who has turned Turkey into a big jail and muzzled the mouth of media, intellectuals and everyone who opposes his destructive policies against Syria, lacks credibility to address preaches that show the range of his tension and confusion caused by his clumsy policies.

The Ministry concluded by stressing that Erdogan’s paranoia and illusions of the past made him forget that his old empire has vanished and that the free people of the world have the choice to make their national decisions and defend their sovereignty and will not allow Erdogan to interfere in their affairs.

Assad's government has faced militancy since March 2011, when governments opposed to him armed and financed some of his domestic political foes in an attempt to have him forcefully removed from power. Armed factions were soon joined by an array of international terrorists pouring into the country to help oust Syrian President.

But the government in Damascus persevered as different factions of the society rallied around Assad in the face of an all-out militancy. Syria's allies, Iran and Russia, also offered advisory military help, and Moscow launched an aerial bombardment campaign against terrorist groups in the country in September 2015 on a request from the Syrian government.

Twitter account of imprisoned Palestinian teenage girl Ahed Tamimi deleted
Without explanation, the Twitter account belonging to imprisoned Palestinian teenage girl Ahed Tamimi was deleted. Tamimi was arrested and imprisoned by the Israeli military.

Another account has been created, calling for Twitter to reinstate Tamimi’s original account.

While it is unclear if Twitter itself deleted the account, Manal Tamimi, a relative of Ahed, suggested Twitter did indeed ban the account.

The Palestinian teenager was arrested last week after a video of her slapping Israeli soldiers who were blocking the steps at her family’s house went viral. Israeli forces confiscated computer equipment from the Tamimi residence during the nighttime raid. It is possible that Israel accessed Ahed Tamimi's account from those computers.

Tamimi’s cousin Nour was also arrested. Her mother Nariman Tamimi was detained as well, when she went to the police station where her daughter was being held.

The Tamimis are prominent anti-occupation activists who reside in the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh. They lead demonstrations every Friday to protest the confiscation of the village’s well for the nearby settlement of Halamish.

An Israeli soldier shot Ahed Tamimi’s brother Mohammad, 14, in the head during a demonstration on December 22. He has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery and a medically induced coma.

The Tamimis have long been targeted for their activism. In 2011, an Israeli soldier fired a tear gas canister from closer range at Mustafa Tamimi, killing him. Israel's Military Advocate General cleared the soldier who fired the canister of any wrongdoing. The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem said the ruling “conveys the indifference of the military law enforcement system to the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank.”

While it is unknown if Israeli authorities requested that Twitter suspend Tamimi’s account, the social media giant has collaborated with Israel before. In 2016, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked revealed that Twitter was removing content it deemed “harmful.”

RT reached out to Twitter for comment on the suspension of Ahed Tamimi’s account but had not received any response at the time of publication.

Tel Aviv has condemned “malicious” anti-Semitic graffiti daubed on Jewish institutions in the Ukrainian city of Odessa, and has urged Kiev to take “decisive measures” against neo-Nazis.

“We are gravely concerned by these expressions of anti-Semitism, and expect Ukraine's government to take decisive measures to eliminate anti-Semitic phenomena and to bring the culprits to justice,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

The offensive markings, spray-painted on several Jewish sites in Odessa, were discovered Monday, and pictures and videos of them promptly spread across social media. In one instance, “First toast for Holocaust!” was written on the gates of a local Holocaust Museum.

Another anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered on the gates of the Brodsky synagogue, reading: “K*kes out. Ukraine for Ukrainians.” The slogan dates back to World War Two, as it was used by Ukrainian ultra-nationalists who collaborated with Nazi Germany and participated in ethnic cleansing. The building has long housed a state archive and was not used as a synagogue since the 1920s.

The third offensive example of graffiti emerged on the Beit-Grand Jewish cultural center. The graffiti reads: “Aunt Sonya won’t help – the boss is Ukrainian here.” All the graffiti was accompanied by the Wolfsangel symbol, widely used in Nazi Germany and popular among Ukrainian neo-Nazis today.

A similar symbol is used by the notorious Azov battalion, which is engaged in the civil conflict in eastern Ukraine, as well as by several other Ukrainian far-right organizations. Azov, however, denies the Nazi essence of their emblem, claiming it to be a monogram IN – Idea of the Nation – and not the Wolfsangel.

Jewish Settlers Storm Palestinian School, Assault Students, Teachers
TEHRAN (FNA)- Jewish settlers stormed a Palestinian school in the occupied West Bank on Thursday morning and assaulted students and teachers, according to a prominent Palestinian official.

Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian Authority official in charge of tracking Israeli settlement expansion in the Northern West Bank, said about 15 Jewish settlers had stormed the Burin school in the West Bank city of Nablus, where they had assaulted students and vandalized teachers' cars, Daily Sabah reported.

The incident led to limited clashes between Palestinian students and settlers before the Israeli army intervened, he added.

According to Daghlas, Israeli army troops used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse the Palestinian teachers and students.

Some 40,000 Jewish settlers live near the Palestinian city of Nablus in 39 settlements and settler outposts, from which they carry out occasional attacks on Palestinians and their property, Palestinian officials say.

US-led coalition won't attack ISIS in govt-controlled areas of Syria – commander

US-led coalition won't attack ISIS in govt-controlled areas of Syria – commander
Ignoring the Syrian forces' vastly successful Russia-backed anti-terrorist campaign, a senior coalition commander has accused Damascus of being "unwilling or unable" to defeat ISIS.

Still, the coalition won't go after Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists that are still holed up in territory under the Syrian government's control. “We will continue to deconflict with the Russians, but we have got no intention to operate in areas that are currently held by the regime,” Gen. Felix Gedney, of the British Army, the coalition's deputy commander for strategy and support, said at a Wednesday briefing. The general claimed that a “limited number of ISIS militants” have been moving toward Damascus, stressing that the coalition has no plans to confront them since the area is controlled by Syria.

While the coalition won’t leave Syria “until ISIS no longer poses a threat” and a UN-endorsed peace settlement is reached, it would be active only “in areas controlled by partner forces,” Gedney added.

“They seem to be moving with impunity through regime-held territory, showing that the regime is clearly either unwilling or unable to defeat Daesh within their borders,” he went on to say.

That's after the Syrian forces, backed by the Russian airstrikes, liberated some 98 percent of the Syrian territory from Islamist terrorists, according to late November statements by both the Defense Ministry and President Vladimir Putin. The remaining pockets of resistance, Putin said, are “quickly dissolving under attacks by the Russian Airspace Forces and its Syrian allies.”

On December 11, Putin announced the withdrawal of the bulk of the Russian contingent from Syria, following a two-year operation that lead to the defeat of “the most battle-hardened grouping of international terrorists.”

Since the launch of the campaign on September 30, 2015 at the request of the Syrian government, then deeply in retreat and in control of just 10 percent of the land, over 67,000 square kilometers of Syrian territory have been liberated and over 32,000 terrorists killed, according to the commander of the Russian forces in Syria, Colonel-General Sergey Surovkin.

Russian warplanes were carrying out 60-70 sorties a day on average, targeting militants’ infrastructure and bases, while the international coalition contributed some 8 to 10, Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov said in a recent interview to Komsomolskaya Pravda daily. At the height of the anti-terrorist campaign, Russian jets were conducting up to 120-140 raids every day.

Still, the US-led coalition rushed to declare the victory over ISIS was theirs and downplay Moscow's contribution, shortly after the Russian military announced Syria's liberation. US President Donald Trump bluntly said, “We’ve won,” in Syria and Iraq while praising himself and his Defense Secretary James Mattis for “knocking the hell out of” ISIS. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian went even further, accusing Moscow of “appropriating” the US-led coalition’s achievements.

FARSNEWS2017/12/27
New US-Backed Kurdish Army Formed in Northern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Kurds in Syria have formed a new military body named the 'Northern Syria Army' which includes the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the People's Protection Units (YPG) and other groups with the aim of protecting the regions controlled by Kurds in the country.

Commander of the Northern Syria Army Siaband Volat warned on Wednesday that his forces will confront any attacks against the regions controlled by Kurds.

The Northern Syria Army which is recruiting forces will protect regions in Hasaka, Koubani, Tal Abyadh, Manbij, Afrin, Raqqa and Northern Deir Ezzur, and has already recruited 100,000 forces.

Volat underlined that the US-led coalition forces will train and support the Northern Syria Army technically and will supply them with weapons.

Training of the Kurds' new military body will be carried out in al-Jazeera, Koubani, Afrin, Manbij and al-Tabaqah bases.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump approved providing weapons worth $393 million to its partners in Syria despite Ankara's concerns over the continued delivery of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to PKK's Syrian offshoot the YPG.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said mid-December that all US-backed Kurdish armed militants are “traitors” to the Syrian nation, ramping up the rhetoric particularly against the YPG, which are mainly active in Northeastern areas of the Arab country through receiving vital substantial air and armament support from Washington.

“When we talk about those referred to as 'the Kurds', they are in fact not just Kurds. All those who work for a foreign country, mainly those under American command... are traitors” regardless of their names, Assad added.

The Syrian army troops are preparing for attacking the Kurdish-majority SDF in Deir Ezzur to recapture the oil and gas fields under their control after President al-Assad blasted the Kurds' betrayal to the country and their close cooperation with the American invaders, media sources disclosed on Sunday.

The Arabic-language al-Hadath news quoted the Russian papers as saying that the Syrian intelligence service rests assured that Kurds and the US officers played a key role in evacuating ISIL's Chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi and seven of his close aids from his hideout in Iraq to a US-run base in Ra'as al-Ein and then to Rmeilan in Hasaka province in Northeastern Syria.

Al-Hadath further said that the Kurdish militants are likely to retreat from Eastern Syria in the new year, adding that the Syrian Army's elite units are now prepared to take control of oil and gas fields on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River that the Kurds occupied with the US back up.

In went on to say that the Syrian Army plan to use an assault strategy similar to the Iraqi troops' Kirkuk liberation operation.

According to the report, the Syrian Army Command plans to give the last ultimatum to the Kurds to deliver control of oil and gas fields to the government troops before waging the attack.

Reports of US-China intelligence hotline over Korean crisis ‘fake news’ – state media
China’s Global Times newspaper, which has government ties, has denied reports in the Japanese press which claim that Beijing and Washington have agreed to share intelligence related to North Korea.

The original report was published Monday by the influential Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. The report said several US government sources told it that US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had agreed to intensify intelligence sharing during Trump’s November visit to Beijing.

The two sides reportedly agreed to compare notes on North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and the effect that the international economic sanctions are taking on it. The sharing would “extend to such issues as how to secure North Korea's nuclear weapons and dealing with refugees from North Korea should a military encounter occur,” according to the newspaper.

The agreement also reportedly includes periodic meetings between high-ranking military and intelligence officials of the two nations and a hotline established between the HQ of the US Forces Korea in Seoul and the Chinese military's Northern Theater Command, which is based in Shenyang, Liaoning province, the Asahi Shimbun said.

The short denial published by the Global Times, an international branch of the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, said there was no hotline between the US and Chinese militaries described by the Japanese publication.(以下略)

RT2017/12/27
US lets militants train, mount attacks from its Syrian bases – chief of Russian General Staff
The US is hosting training camps for militant groups in Syria, including former ISIS fighters who fled from Raqqa, said the head of Russia’s General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, citing data obtained by aerial surveillance.

The US forces have effectively turned their military base near the town of al-Tanf in southeastern Syria into a terrorists’ training camp, Gerasimov said in an interview to Russia’s Komsomolskaya Pravda daily on Wednesday.

“According to satellite and other surveillance data, terrorist squads are stationed there. They are effectively training there,” Gerasimov said, when asked about what’s going on at the base.

The general also said the US has been using a refugee camp in northeast Syria, outside the town of Al-Shaddadah in Al-Hasakah province, as a training camp for the remnants of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorist group, including those evacuated from Raqqa, and other militants.

“This is essentially ISIS,” Gerasimov said. “They change their colors, take different names – the 'New Syrian Army' and others. They are tasked with destabilizing the situation.”

Some 400 militants left Al-Shaddadah for Al-Tanf, launching an offensive on the Syrian forces from the eastern bank of Euphrates, after the main ISIS forces were routed there, Gerasimov said.

The Al-Tanf base is located within the 55km “de-confliction” buffer zone.

At the moment, there are about 750 militants in Al-Shaddadah and 350 in Al-Tanf on the Syrian-Jordanian border, according to Gerasimov, who said the Russian military has been watching the training at the Al-Tanf base for some time.

“The most important is that we have been seeing the militants advancing from there for several months. When the control [of the Syrian forces] loosened, as many as 350 militants left the area,” Gerasimov said, noting that the nearby town of Al-Qaryatayn was under threat of being captured by the militants had the Russian forces not repelled the offensive.

“We took timely measures…they have suffered a defeat, these forces were destroyed. There were captives from these camps. It is clear that training is underway at those camps,” he added.

It’s not the first time that Russia has pointed out to Washington that militants holed up inside the buffer zone have been staging attacks on Syrian forces. In October, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov called the base a 100km wide “black hole” created with US help on the Syrian border.

“Instead of the New Syrian Army, mobile ISIS groups, like a jack in the box, carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks against Syrian troops and civilians from there," he said, noting that while the pretext for the base’s creation was “the need to conduct operations against ISIS” no information has been available to this respect during the first six months of its existence.

Report that North Korean defector has anthrax antibodies feeds into biological weapons scare
South Korean media have claimed that a North Korean defector was found to have developed antibodies to anthrax before his flight across the border. The report may likely play into the hands of those looking for a pretext for war.

The news was broken by South Korea’s Channel A on Tuesday, citing an anonymous intelligence official.

"Anthrax antibodies have been found in the North Korean soldier who defected this year," the unnamed official said, without revealing the way in which the soldier might have been exposed to the deadly substance, which could be either direct contact or vaccination.

Little is known about the soldier apart from that he was one of four North Korean military servicemen to defect to South Korea this year. The revelation comes against the backdrop of a series of reports suggesting that North Korea has been developing a program to fit biological weapons on intercontinental missiles. An earlier anonymous report by Japan’s Asahi newspaper, that came out last week, claimed that Pyongyang has embarked on “conducting heat and pressure resistance tests to see whether anthrax germs can survive at temperatures of 7,000 degrees, the level an ICBM [inter-continental ballistic missile] encounters when it reenters the Earth atmosphere.”

The concerns of the pariah state getting hold of biological weapons were echoed in the recently released US National Security Strategy, claiming that Pyongyang has been striving to obtain “chemical and biological weapons which could also be delivered by missile.”

North Korea, meanwhile, rejected all the allegations and reiterated its commitment to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC). It accused Washington of trying to forge a pretext for a military incursion, like it did in 2003 to justify its military aggression in Iraq.

The comparison has merit, as even the alleged biological weapon is exactly the same. At the fateful UN Security Council meeting on February 5, 2003, the then-US Secretary of State Colin Powell brandished a model vial of anthrax to illustrate the alleged danger coming from Iraq under Saddam Hussein, which according to Powell could have produced some 25,000 liters of anthrax. The word “anthrax” first made headlines in October 2001, when five Americans died and over a dozen fell sick due to exposure to powdered anthrax sent through the mail. In the most prominent case, a letter with anthrax was delivered to the office of Democratic Senate majority leader Tom Daschle, shutting down the whole Senate.

The letters that also contained death threats were linked by the media and the George W. Bush administration to Iraq at the time.

"The Iraqi regime has plotted to develop anthrax and nerve gas weapons for over a decade," Bush said in his State of the Union address in January 2002, noting that the US would act first in the face of a possibility of such an attack.

Later, it was revealed that the man behind the toxic letters was US citizen Bruce Ivins, who was working in a military biodefense lab and had no relation to Iraq. The rest of Powell's claims about Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction found no proof either, with Powell later admitting that he was misled by intelligence community and the speech became a “blot” on his record.

While the US officials, spearheaded by UN envoy Nikki Haley, are upping the rhetoric and threatening to “utterly destroy” North Korea if war breaks out, or in case of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, calling on Pentagon to move US servicemen's families from South Korea as though the war is imminent, Russia and China have been advocating restraint, warning of disastrous consequences to the whole region, first and foremost to Washington’s ally South Korea, of a potential military confrontation. The so-called double-freeze plan, championed by Moscow and Beijing, envisions the simultaneous halt of war games regularly held by the US and allies and the suspension of the nuclear and missile program run by Pyongyang. The plan, however, was outright rejected by Washington in August.

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured another oilfield in Eastern Deir Ezzur, dissident-affiliated websites reported on Tuesday, adding that the SDF is now one step closer to direct clashes with the Syrian Army.

The news websites reported that the SDF imposed full control over Murad oilfield on the Eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir Ezzur province and the two small towns of al-Hasyan and Abu Hardoub in the region.

In the meantime, field sources said that the SDF invasion of more oilfields in Eastern Deir Ezzur has increased the possibility of direct confrontation with the army soldiers who mission is mainly capturing control over the energy-rich regions.

Media sources disclosed on Sunday the Syrian Army troops were preparing for attacking the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces in Deir Ezzur to capture the oil and gas fields under their control after President Bashar al-Assad blasted the Kurds' betrayal to the country and their close cooperation with the American invaders.

Syrian Army Going Impatient with SDF
TEHRAN (FNA)- The recent remarks by the Damascus officials about the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are a type of warning to the Kurds, specially after Deputy Foreign Minister Feisal Mikdad asked them to withdraw from the areas controlled by them not to experience ISIL's fate, a Syrian analyst said on Tuesday.

Kamel Saqar noted that there are signs of differences between the two sides, specially over the SDF's control over vast areas in the Northern and Eastern parts of Syria, saying, "The recent comments are considered as the start of a new military phase in Eastern Syria and the army might go impatient with the Kurds in coming days."

He referred to the regional agreement among the Syrian, Iraq, Iranian and Turkish officials to prevent formation of a separatist government by the SDF, and said that the agreement was made after the Kurds adopted two measures.

"First, they exceeded their limits in the field and entered the Syrian government's strategic energy fields in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country," he said, and added, "Second, they have done coordination and changed their role with the ISIL to gain control over several regions and oil fields in the Eastern parts of the Euphrates river."

Safar underlined that at present, the Syrian army has ended battle against the terrorist groups in 90 percent of the geographical regions in Syria and it would rationally take military action to win back areas controlled by the Kurds, based on field and political priorities.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump approved providing weapons worth $393 million to its partners in Syria despite Ankara's concerns over the continued delivery of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to PKK's Syrian offshoot the People's Protection Units (YPG).

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said mid-December that all US-backed Kurdish armed militants are “traitors” to the Syrian nation, ramping up the rhetoric particularly against the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which are mainly active in Northeastern areas of the Arab country through receiving vital substantial air and armament support from Washington.

Tension Intensifies between Gov't Troops, Kurds in Northeastern Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Wednesday that a fresh round of tensions has erupted between the Syrian Army troops and the Kurdish fighters in Hasaka city after the two sides started arresting forces of each other.

The SOHR reported that the army and the Kurds have put their forces on alert in Hasaka city, adding that tension erupted after the Kurds arrested three army soldiers in the Northern entrance of Hasaka city and the army arrested two Kurds in the Central part of the city.

Local sources said that over 100 army men have arrived at an army base out of the city to reinvigorate government forces' positions in Hasaka.

A Kurdish media outlet reported in November that the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) approached the Syrian Army troops' positions near the border with Iraq, intensifying the possibility of direct confrontation with the pro-government forces in Deir Ezzur province.

The Kurdish-language Hawar news reported that the SDF advanced 40 km Eastward from the al-Tanak oilfield and reached Deir Ezzur's border with Iraq.

The Hawar news added that the SDF deployed at a distance only 9 km away from the army-controlled town of Albu Kamal, intensifying the possibility of direct confrontation between the SDF and the army men that are advancing in Albu Kamal's countryside after they captured the town a couple of days ago.

TEHRAN (FNA)- American strategist and US President's advisor Roger Stone claimed that he had evidence that some people within Donald Trump’s cabinet had discussed toppling their boss.

Roger Stone, a long-time associate of Trump, said during an interview with C-SPAN that the rebels were plotting to oust Trump by invoking the 25th Amendment of the US constitution, Al-Waght reported.

“I have sources,” Stone told over the weekend, adding that “And yes, I believe there are some who have had this discussion. This is both outside the cabinet and in."

“There is a plan afoot that is broader than just the cabinet. The 25th Amendment requires a majority of the cabinet and the vice president [to remove the president],” he said, noting that he would “probably report that fully at some point.”

The 25th Amendment defines outlines for the transition of power in case the president is unable or unfit to serve.

Since ratification, the amendment has been invoked six times, with the most far-reaching use being in 1973, when then President Richard Nixon nominated Representative Gerald Ford to replace then Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, who had resigned.

Continuing his wild statements, Stone stressed that removing Trump was a fallback plan for “the establishment.”

“And I have always thought this is plan B for the two party duopoly that has run this country into the ground,” he argued.

“This is not a conspiracy theory… There are members of the cabinet who have had this discussion. Let me just leave it at that,” the conservative lobbyist continued.

Trump and his team are currently under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who has been appointed to see into reports that the president has “colluded” with Russia before and after winning last year’s election.

While millions of people have signed various online petitions calling for Trump’s removal, the prospect of an impeaching seems far-flung given that Republicans maintain majority in both chambers of Congress.

Arab Media: UAE Seeking Regime Change in Oman
TEHRAN (FNA)- Arab media sources disclosed that the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been working on plots to change the regime in Masqat through riots after Oman's impartial position during the recent crises in Qatar and Yemen and due to its good ties with Iran.

The Arabic-language Sasa Post disclosed attempts by UAE Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashed and other UAE rulers to overthrow the current government in Oman, saying that these attempts were not limited to the 2011 coup against Sultan Qaboos in which a gang spies consisting of civilians and military men was set up to empower a pro-UAE government.

Last October, an Emirati whistleblower revealed the UAE's plots against Oman, stressing that Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed and Mohammed Dahlan, one of the defected leaders of Palestine's Fatah movement, support the Omani dissidents in Musandam and Zafar.

He added that the two UAE officials have paid $16mln to the tribal leaders in Musandam to buy their support as Mohammed bin Zayed considers Musandam as a region occupied by Oman and has renamed it as Ro'us al-Jibal.

Amid an unprecedented diplomatic crisis in the Persian Gulf, where a Saudi-led blockade of Qatar has reached the six-month mark, the state of Oman has singularly avoided the fray.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, along with Egypt, issued a synchronized series of announcements in June to cut ties with Qatar, followed by a land, sea and air blockade.

Arab media reports said earlier this month that Oman, a country of 4.4 million people, has publicly stayed silent on the crisis and fallen back on its traditional role of political neutrality. But behind the scenes, Masqat has aided Doha in getting around the blockade, while benefitting financially from strengthened business ties between the two countries.

South Korea: North Korea Plans to Launch Satellite
TEHRAN (FNA)- A South Korean government source said North Korea plans to launch a new satellite, as Pyongyang stresses its right to a peaceful space program.

“Through various channels, we’ve recently learned that the North has completed a new satellite and named it Kwangmyongsong-5,” the South Korean newspaper Joongang Ilbo quoted the unnamed source as saying.

“Their plan is to put a satellite equipped with cameras and telecommunication devices into orbit,” the source added.

North Korea on Monday defended its push for space development as a "legitimate" exercise of its rights, after Pyongyang considered the latest round of UN sanctions, which severely crippled its remaining imports and exports, to be an “act of war”.

"Our satellite launch is a legitimate exercise of the right that thoroughly fits the UN Charter that enshrines the basic rights of respect for sovereignty and equality, and the international law that governs the peaceful use of space," North Korea’s state newspaper Rodong Sinmun said.

"Our country is also in step with the trends of space development that is taking place broadly across the world," the newspaper added.

The paper went on to say that the North would continue to push for its "peaceful" space development to "help contribute to the dreams and ideals of mankind."

The UN Security Council unanimously imposed a new round of sanctions on North Korea on Friday, following its latest ballistic missile test launch in late November. Pyongyang is already under an extremely harsh economic sanctions regime, but the latest round further slashed its refined petroleum product imports and banned all remaining major exports. The measure also demanded the repatriation of all North Koreans working abroad within 24 months.

North Korea has been under a raft of crippling United Nations sanctions since 2006 over its nuclear tests as well as multiple rocket and missile launches.

Pyongyang has fired a ballistic missile which splashed down in the Sea of Japan. North Korean leader personally oversaw the launch of the ICBM, which Pyongyang claims is a Hwasong-15, tipped with super-large heavy warhead and capable of hitting the whole mainland of the US.

Tensions have been building on the peninsula following a series of nuclear and missile tests by Pyongyang as well as threats of war and personal insults traded between US President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Trump and Kim have exchanged a series of personal insults, with Trump calling Kim a "little rocket man" and Pyongyang calling the US president a "mentally deranged dotard" and "old lunatic".

In 2017, North Korea carried out 20 ballistic missile launches, while the United States and its allies, for their part, are constantly conducting far-reaching sea drills in the region. The parties are exchanging tough rhetoric and admit that any scenario - including military action - is possible.

Pyongyang has firmly defended its military program as a deterrent against the hostile policies of the US and its regional allies, including South Korea and Japan.

US President has vowed to impose additional "major sanctions" against North Korea, while Washington has thousands of troops in the region, partially in South Korea and Japan, and routinely threatens the North with military action to stop its weapons program.

Kremlin: Moscow Ready to Act as Mediator between US, North Korea
TEHRAN (FNA)- Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that Moscow is ready to act as a mediator between the United States and North Korea, but the conflicting sides should give their consent to this.

"Russia is ready if both sides need it and want it," Peskov stressed, Tass reported.

"It is impossible to become a mediator between two parties only if one side seeks so, the will of two sides is needed here. As the exchange of confrontational rhetoric is between Pyongyang and Washington, therefore Russia’s readiness is rather evident to open the way for de-escalating tensions," he added.

South Korea Claims North Korea Might Negotiate with US in 2018
TEHRAN (FNA)- South Korea sounded optimistic about the potential for talks between North Korea and the United States in 2018, despite the tense situation over the Pyongyang nuclear program.

"North Korea will seek negotiation with United States, while continuing to pursue its effort to be recognized as a de facto nuclear-possessing country,” South Korea’s Unification Ministry said in a report, without providing an explanation as to how it reached the conclusion, World News reported.

Seoul made this prediction the same day it announced it was creating a special bureau to counter the North Korean nuclear threat.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had signaled that the US President Donald Trump administration was ready to negotiate without demanding North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles programs.

He announced that Washington is ready to begin exploratory talks with North Korea “without preconditions”, but only after a “period of quiet” without new nuclear or missile tests.

“We are ready to talk anytime North Korea would like to talk. We are ready to have the first meeting without preconditions. Let’s just meet,” Tillerson said.

“And then we can begin to lay out a roadmap... It’s not realistic to say we are only going to talk if you come to the table ready to give up your program. They have too much invested in it," he added.

However, the top diplomat then laid down one condition and stressed that there should be a “period of quiet” in which such preliminary talks could take place, as he portrayed it as a practical consideration.

“It’s going to be tough to talk if in the middle of our talks you decide to test another device,” he said, adding that “We need a period of quiet.”

Tillerson’s comments came as leader Kim Jong-un vowed to make North Korea the “world’s strongest nuclear power”.

But, North Korea snubbed Tillerson’s proposal for dialogue with Washington, stating that it will not give up its nuclear weapons programme and stressing that the final aim of any such initiative would be for North Korea to abandon its nuclear program.

A commentary piece published on North Korea’s state newspaper Rodong Sinmun said Pyongyang was aware of Washington’s intention in proposing talks, and it was not an issue whether such initiative would come with or without preconditions.

Commenting on the fact, Rodong Sinmun underscored what the US seeks in proposing talks with or without preconditions is the nuclear dismantlement of the DPRK and there is nothing changed.

The DPRK has no interest in the dialogue intermittently put up by the US which is sneered by the international community for failing to mind its internal affairs, the commentary added, noting that as the DPRK has consistently insisted, the way to solve the issue between the DPRK and the US is for the US to drop at an early date its heinous hostile policy, which defines the DPRK as an enemy, and co-exist peacefully with the DPRK possessed of nukes.

Rodong Sinmun said the White House was pursuing a duplicitous policy in dealing with the country’s weapons program.

“Saying our nation is to be ‘utterly destroyed’ on the one hand, whilst saying ‘talk without precondition’ on the other hand is the Trump administration’s execution of the maximum pressure and interruption policy aimed at leading the North to the table for denuclearization,” the newspaper added.

The newspaper noted that as long as the US hostile policy and nuclear threat toward the DPRK are not fundamentally removed, the DPRK will never put its nukes and ballistic missiles on the table of negotiations nor flinch even an inch from the already chosen road of bolstering up the nuclear force. This is the fixed stand of the DPRK.

“The US is trying to shift responsibility for tensions on the Korean Peninsula to us with its dialogue offensive,” the Rodong Sinmun piece continued, as quoted by South Korea’s state news agency Yonhap.

“The move is seen as being intended to set the tone for manipulating new UN Security Council resolutions that may include a maritime blockade if we do not accept dialogue aimed at discussing the abandonment of our nuclear weapons,” it stressed.

US, Canadian weapons sent to Ukraine may end up in Middle East terrorists’ hands – Moscow

American and Canadian lethal weapons intended for Ukraine may end up in the wrong hands because of a high level of corruption in the country, a senior Russian diplomat has said.

First Canada and then the US announced that they had decided to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine, purportedly for self-defense. But these countries should consider the risks associated with transferring advanced weapons to a country infamous for its high level of corruption, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told RIA Novosti.

“Are Washington and Ottawa certain that their weapons will not end up in ‘the wrong hands’? For example, in the hands of terrorists? Or sold by crooked Ukrainian dealers to the Middle East or some other region that the US considers sensitive for its interests?” he remarked. “We ask these questions to our partners across the ocean; call on them to re-examine the risks associated with such hasty moves.”

The US and Canada earlier authorized deliveries of lethal weapons to Ukraine to boost its defensive capabilities. The country’s military is currently involved in a stand-off with self-proclaimed republics in the east, who rejected the 2014 armed coup in Kiev. The hostilities have been somewhat curbed since their peak in early 2015, thanks to a peace agreement negotiated with the help of Russia, Germany and France.

Russia criticized the American and Canadian decision, saying Kiev may be tempted to escalate the conflict to distract the Ukrainian public from their continued economic hardships under the new authorities.

“The US and Canada are opening a Pandora’s box and de facto becoming involved in the internal Ukrainian conflict, taking it up to an international level,” Karasin said in the interview. “There are already military instructors from America, Canada and other NATO countries. Many Ukrainians will now consider them combatants in the civil war in the east.”

The US is no stranger to arming factions in foreign nations, though the effectiveness of the tactic is questionable. The latest example is Syria, where Washington provided various forms of support to armed groups seeking to topple the government in Damascus. This included supplying advanced weapons, bought from nearby countries like Bulgaria and Romania. Many of those weapons ended up in the hands of the jihadist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), according to a report of arms tracking group CAR published this month.

Deadly flesh-eating illness has infected over 500 people in Japan
Over 500 people were infected with a deadly flesh-eating disease in Japan this year, local media report. The virus ravages limbs and internal organs and can kill its victims in a matter of hours.

Some 525 patients – the highest number since records began in 1999 – have been afflicted with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing data from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Of these, 66 were in Tokyo followed by 40 in Kanagawa, 32 in Aichi, 31 in Fukuoka and 28 in Hyogo. Most of the victims were over the age of 30.

Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome 連鎖球菌毒素ショック症候群, , or toxic shock syndrome (TSS) for short, recently made headlines after former American model and athlete Lauren Wasser shared her story about suffering from the flesh-eating disease after leaving in her tampon too long. It led to her right leg being amputated. The disease typically spreads through contact with an infected wound and starts with a fever, swelling and pain in the hands and feet. As it spreads throughout the body via the bloodstream, the bacteria start eating away at the organs and flesh, leading to delirium, confusion and ultimately, death.

The illness has a high mortality rate, with the US Center for Disease Control giving a survival rate of less than fifty percent. However, it can be treated early on through antibiotics or failing that, amputation.

“The signs of an STSS-infected area likely appear from the feet,” Ken Kikuchi of the Tokyo Women’s Medical University told the Asahi Shimbun. “The elderly should be careful about swelling of their feet and go see a doctor immediately when swelling appears.”
