Report: Homeless Crisis Hits US West Coast
TEHRAN (FNA)- Reports said that the homeless crisis is rocking the entire West Coast of the United States, pushing abject poverty into the open like never before.

Public health is at risk, several cities have declared states of emergency, and cities and counties are spending millions of dollars, in some cases billions, in a search for solutions, presstv reported.

In Seattle, housing prices are soaring thanks to the tech industry, but the boom comes with a consequence, a surge in homelessness marked by 400 unauthorized tent camps in parks, under bridges, on road medians and along busy sidewalks and dozens of campers lining streets around the city.

That struggle is not Seattle's alone. A homeless crisis of unprecedented proportions is rocking the West Coast, and its victims are being left behind by the very things that mark the region's success: soaring housing costs, rock-bottom vacancy rates and a roaring economy that waits for no one. All along the coast, elected officials are scrambling for solutions, according to the AP findings.

"I've got economically zero unemployment in my city, and I've got thousands of homeless people that actually are working and just can't afford housing," said Seattle City Councilman Mike O'Brien. "There's nowhere for these folks to move to. Every time we open up a new place, it fills up."

The rising numbers of homeless people have pushed abject poverty into the open like never before and have overwhelmed cities and nonprofits.

San Diego now scrubs its sidewalks with bleach to counter a deadly hepatitis A outbreak that has spread to other cities and forced California to declare a state of emergency last month. In Anaheim, home to Disneyland, 400 people sleep along a bike path in the shadow of Angel Stadium. Organizers in Portland lit incense at a recent outdoor food festival to cover up the stench of urine in a parking lot where vendors set up shop.

A new study funded by the real estate information firm Zillow and conducted by the University of Washington found a strong link between rising housing prices and rising homelessness numbers. A 5 percent rent increase in Los Angeles, for example, would mean about 2,000 more homeless people there, the authors said.

Nationally, homelessness has been trending down, partly because governments and nonprofit groups have gotten better at moving people into housing. That's true in many West Coast cities, too, but the flow the other direction is even faster. And on the West Coast, shelter systems are smaller.

"If you have a disability income, you make about $9,000 a year and renting a studio in Seattle is about $1,800 a month and so that's twice your income," said Margaret King, director of housing programs for DESC, a nonprofit that works with Seattle's homeless.

"So everybody who was just hanging on because they had cheap rent, they're losing that ... and they wind up outside. It's just exploded."

Nowhere is that more evident than California's Silicon Valley, where high salaries and a tight housing market have pushed rent out of reach for thousands. In ever-shifting communities of the homeless, RVs and cars cluster by the dozens in the city where Google built its global headquarters and just blocks from Stanford University.

Ellen Tara James-Penney, a lecturer at San Jose State University, has been sleeping out of a car for about a decade, ever since she lost her housing while an undergraduate at the school where she now teaches four English courses, a job that pays $28,000 a year. Home is an old Volvo.

"I've basically been homeless since 2007, and I'm really tired," she said. "Really tired."

US Looking for Escape Routes for Militants Fighting in Syria
TEHRAN (FNA)- The US that has been financing the militants in Syria is now searching for an escape route for them with the approaching defeat of the terrorist groups, the former commander-in-chief Viktor Bondarev said.

Bondarev said that in addition to military, logistical and medical assistance the US has provided for the terrorists, now, when ISIL's defeat in Syria is close to completion, overseas sponsors are looking for their charges escape routes, RIA Novosti reported.

He further said that the terrorists in Syria now are patchy and fragmented thanks to the efforts Russia has managed to undermine the economy of ISIL.

Senior US Security Official Arrives in Damascus to Hold Talks with Syrian Counterpart

TEHRAN (FNA)- A high-ranking security official from the United States arrived in Damascus last Tuesday to meet with his Syrian counterpart to assure him about withdrawal of Washington forces after annihilation of ISIL terrorists, an Arab media outlet reported.

“Damascus welcomed the US' first official figure from one of security bodies, without publicizing it,” the Arabic-language Lebanese al-Akhbar daily newspaper reported.

The daily also reported that the unidentified US official entered Syria via Lebanon's ground border, spending a few hours in Syria before returning to Beirut.

According to the report, the official “arrived in Beirut earlier this week and went to Syria by land on Tuesday, accompanied by Lebanese security officials to the Syrian capital.”

It said that Syrian officials remain reticent to meet with American officials until the US government alters its foreign policy with regard to Syria, where Washington has long pursued a regime change.

In the meantime, the well-informed sources said that the US official has organized contacts between the US security officials, including Head of CIA Michael Pompeo, with Chief of Syria's Supreme Security Council Ali Mamlouk.

The sources said that the US envoy to Damascus that has been mentioned as David told the Syrian security official that the US military forces do not intend to engaged militarily with any other side in Syria.

The sources quoted the US envoy as saying that the US do not intend to remain in any base in Syria after annihilation of the ISIL, adding that Washington does not promise to any opposition group to stay in Syria's soil.

Later, a senior regional official close to Damascus told Reuters on Friday that a senior US official met Syria’s national security chief in Damascus this week in the highest ranking visit to Syria by a US official since the start of the war in 2011.

The regional official did not name the US official who met Ali Mamlouk, adding that “It is an important step, but Damascus does not have confidence in the American position".

Syrian and US officials have not yet made any comments on the report.

The US-led coalition of 68 nations has been conducting airstrikes against what are said to be ISIL's targets inside Syria since September 2014 without any authorization from the Damascus government or a UN mandate.

The military alliance has repeatedly been accused of targeting and killing civilians. It has also been largely incapable of fulfilling its declared aim of destroying the ISIL terrorist group.

The US has long been accused of colluding with the ISIL to provide safe passage and logistic support to the members of the militant group in conflict zones.

Arab Daily: US Admits Assad's Legitimacy by Sending Envoy to Damascus
TEHRAN (FNA)- A leading Arab newspaper referred to a senior US official's meeting with Syria’s national security chief in Damascus earlier this week, describing it as an indication of Washington's admission of President Bashar al-Assad's legitimacy.

"By this visit, the US has clearly admitted that Assad will remain in power until further notice," the Arabic-language al-Ray al-Youm wrote on Sunday.

Noting that the visit was made at the US demand and coordinated by the Lebanese sides close to both Damascus and Washington, it added, "The US and its allies have spent billions of dollars and used thousands of tons of modern weapons to overthrow the Damascus government militarily in the past 7 years and now one of their security officials makes a surprise visit to Syria."

According to the Arab daily, although the contents of the meeting and the message that the US official conveyed to the Syrian leader have been kept secret, certain reports said that Syria’s National Security Chief Ali Mamlouk has protested at the American forces' deployment in Syria, calling it "occupation".

A senior regional official close to Damascus said that the trip was the highest level visit to Syria by a US official since the start of the war in 2011.

The Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar first reported the visit on Friday, saying that the US official discussed security matters.

The regional official did not name the US official who met Ali Mamlouk. "It is an important step, but Damascus does not have confidence in the American position."

The US official traveled to Damascus via Lebanon.

The United States has supported the terrorists and opposition to President Assad during the Syrian war.

Eleven Saudi Princes, Four Ministers Arrested as Crown Prince Unleashes Crackdown on Corruption
TEHRAN (FNA)- Saudi Arabia has ordered the arrest of at least 11 Saudi princes and four incumbent ministers of the Saudi government, an Arab media outlet reported on Sunday.

RT quoted Al-Arabiya news as saying that the minister of the National Guard and the minister of economy are among the arrested officials.

A new anti-corruption committee chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was created late Saturday by royal decree of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Saudi Arabia’s official news agency, Al-Arabia, published on Saturday.

The decree appoints the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to lead the committee, granting it broad powers to fight corruption.

The committee is exempted from “laws, regulations, instructions, orders and decision” while performing its wide range of duties, namely “identifying offenses, crimes, persons and entities” complicit in corruption, and gives it the power to impose punitive measures on those caught red-handed. Those include asset freezes, travel bans and arrests.

The committee made its first arrests hours after it was created, detaining 11 princes, four current ministers as well as “tens” of ex-ministers of the Saudi government in connection with newly opened corruption probes, Al-Arabiya reported.

Minister of the National Guard Prince Miteb bin Abdullah and Economy Minister Adel Fakeih are among those arrested, Al Arabiya cited a senior Saudi official as saying, on condition of anonymity. Alwaleed al-Ibrahim, owner of television network MBC, was also detained.

Dozens of former ministers were arrested by the Crown Prince committee, including a former governor of Riyadh province, former finance minister, and former chief of the Royal Court.

The committee said it is relaunching a probe into the devastating floods that killed over 120 people in the city of Jeddah in 2009, while inflicting millions in property damage. In wake of the wide-ranging investigation, concluded in December 2014, the Saudi court found 45 people guilty, including senior officials, on charges of bribery, misuse of power and public funds, money laundering and illicit business operations.

Another high-profile case resumed by the anti-corruption committee is the investigation into the outbreak of the so-called Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus in Saudi Arabia in 2014, which resulted in nearly 300 deaths and the ouster of the country’s health minister.

Most senior Saudi officials in charge of state oversight, investigation and prosecution will sit on the committee, which will comprise the attorney general and the heads of state security, anti-corruption authority, audit bureau, and the chair of the monitoring and investigation commission.

“In view of what we have noticed of exploitation by some of the weak souls who have put their own interests above the public interest, in order to illicitly accrue money,” the Saudi King said in a statement, explaining the need to form the body.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri announced his resignation in a speech broadcast from Saudi Arabia.

He also said that he sensed a plot being hatched against his life, presstv reported.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun's office said that Hariri had phoned him "from outside Lebanon" to resign and that Aoun awaited Hariri's return to hear the "circumstances of the resignation."

Hariri announced his resignation following his visits to Saudi Arabia.

The resignation also comes less than a month after he announced plans to join a coalition government with Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah.

He became prime minister in 2016 after serving another term between November 2009 and June 2011.

Saad Hariri is the son of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. Hariri has also been the leader of the Future Movement party since 2005.

Advisor to Iranian FM: Saad al-Hariri's Resignation Ordered by Trump, Saudi Crown Prince

TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Advisor to the Iranian foreign minister Hossein Sheikholeslam underlined that US President Donald Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman have coaxed Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri into declaring his resignation in a foreign country.

"Al-Hariri's resignation was done in coordination with Trump and Mohammed bin Salman to foment tension in Lebanon and the region," Sheikholeslam said on Saturday.

Noting that the resignation was planned by the Americans to make up for their losses after the ISIL was defeated in the region, he said it was better for al-Hariri to respect the Lebanese nation and submit his resignation inside the country and not from a foreign state, Saudi Arabia.

Al-Hariri resigned during a trip to Saudi Arabia in a surprise move that plunged the country into uncertainty amid heightened regional tensions.

In a televised address from Riyadh, al-Hariri launched a vicious tirade against Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group for what he claimed was their meddling in Arab affairs.

Al-Hariri was appointed prime minister in late 2016 and headed a 30-member national unity cabinet.

Al-Hariri’s resignation on Saturday was expected to sharply raise tensions in the country.

In his speech, he claimed he feared for his life and that the atmosphere in the country is similar to the one that existed before his father, the late prime minister Rafik al-Hariri, was assassinated in 2005.

Arab Analyst: Riyadh Beating War Drums by Hariri's Resignation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Abdel Bari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm newspaper, described resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri as a Saudi-US gambling, stressing that Riyadh is beating the drums of war against Hezbollah.

"It doesn’t seem that Hariri's resignation is due to his fear of life as he appeared in Beirut very normally and Hezbollah protected him and he was appointed as prime minister with Hezbollah's agreement," Atwan wrote on Sunday.

Noting that the resignation has been plotted within the framework of a Saudi-US plot to target Hezbollah which is a danger to Israel and Saudi Arabia for its media and political support for Ansarollah in Yemen, he said, "Information shows that Saudi Arabia, in coordination with US President Donald Trump, is after formation of an Arab coalition like what was formed against Yemen whose likely target is Hezbollah and it is not unlikely that Israel will be the backbone of this coalition."

Atwan added that reports from London also indicate that Saudi Arabia has contacted Jordan and invited it to join the coalition, stressing that the reports have not yet been confirmed.

In relevant remarks on Saturday, Senior Advisor to the Iranian foreign minister Hossein Sheikholeslam underlined that Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman have coaxed al-Hariri into declaring his resignation in a foreign country.

Ex-Lebanese Minister: Saad Al-Hariri under Detention in S. Arabia
TEHRAN (FNA)- A former Lebanese minister revealed that Saad al-Hariri, the country's prime minister who resigned from his post during his Riyadh trip on Saturday, is under detention in Saudi Arabia.

"I call on the Lebanese government to guarantee Saad Hariri's safe return to the country and I emphasize that he has been detained and he was interrogated after his friend (Khalid) al-Tuwaijri (Chief of the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia under King Abdullah) was arrested," Wiam Wahhab was quoted as saying by Bahrain's Arabic-language al-Wasat newspaper on Sunday.

The Saudi media reported that the country's security forces have detained a number of princes and former ministers and officials, including al-Tuwaijiri.

Source Reveals Contents of Velayati, Hariri's Talks
TEHRAN (FNA)- An informed source revealed that Iranian Leader's top aide for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati's rejection of the Saudi-dictated demands by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri was the reason behind the latter's resignation.

"The resigned Lebanese prime minister who had traveled to Saudi Arabia before this meeting (with Velayati) returned to Beirut for this meeting and then immediately left for Riyadh again after hearing Tehran's positions and declared his resignation there via the Arab media," the informed source close to Velayati said on Sunday.

"During the meeting, Hariri raised the Saudis' demands before Velayati, calling on Iran to stop supporting the oppressed Yemeni people and improve ties with the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC)," the source added.

In response, the source said, Velayati called on the Saudis to stop bombing the innocent Yemeni people and remove the siege on them to pave the way for political talks.

"The improper demand of Hariri and the Saudis was that the Islamic Republic of Iran leaves the righteous side in the Yemen case but when they became disappointed, they immediately recalled Saad Hariri to Riyadh so that he will declare his resignation outside Lebanon," the source said.

Official: Hariri's Surprise Resignation Sign of New US Adventurism in Region
TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council Mohsen Rezayee blasted the surprise resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, and said that it is a new plot being hatched by the US, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.

"A new adventurist scenario in the region, on behalf of the US, Saudi Arabia and the Zionist regime is taking place," Rezayee said.

He recalled that Hariri, who had taken office a few years ago through national unity dialogue with Lebanese President Michel Aoun and Hezbollah and had spent a peaceful, stable, and economic term in Lebanon, made a surprise resignation under Saudi Arabia’s pressure.

Rezayee underlined that the current data indicates the start of a new adventure by Riyadh, Tel Aviv's regime and Washington, and said, "However, the problem with this sinister triangle is that even their friends are approaching Iran and, as a result, weaken and neutralize their management in the region."

Hariri announced his resignation on Saturday, citing many reasons, including the security situation in Lebanon, and threats to his life.

Saad Hariri is the son of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005. Hariri has also been the leader of the Future Movement party since 2005. He became prime minister in 2016 after serving another term between November 2009 and June 2011.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Saudi whistle-blower Mujtahid, who is believed to be a member of or have a well-connected source in the royal family, revealed that Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri was forced by the Saudi officials to resign.

"Hariri played no role in his resignation. The statement issued by Hariri was written for him and he was displeased with its contents and declaration of resignation in Riyadh," Mujtahid wrote on his twitter page on Monday.

He also dismissed Hariri's claims that his resignation is for the fear of life, and said Hezbollah poses no threat to Hariri and based on the intelligence obtained by the Saudi security bodies the Takfiri groups are a bigger danger.

Mujtahid added that the main reason behind recalling Hariri to Riyadh was returning his properties from outside Saudi Arabia as he is a Saudi citizen and is now under detention along with the country's princes and officials who have been recently arrested.

A former Lebanese minister revealed on Sunday that Hariri is under detention in Saudi Arabia.

"I call on the Lebanese government to guarantee Saad Hariri's safe return to the country and I emphasize that he has been detained and he was interrogated after his friend (Khalid) al-Tuwaijri (Chief of the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia under King Abdullah) was arrested," Wiam Wahhab was quoted as saying by Bahrain's Arabic-language al-Wasat newspaper.

Lebanon's Hariri says he is a ‘free man,’ returning home ‘very soon’
In the first interview since his surprise resignation from an undisclosed location in Saudi Arabia last week, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad Hariri has denied being held in the kingdom against his will, saying he may reverse his decision to leave his post.

“I am a free man in Saudi Arabia, and I can leave whenever I want,” he said in an interview broadcast on the Lebanese channel Future TV. “I will return to Lebanon very soon.”

Hariri, who was prime minister between 2009 and 2011 and reappointed again last year, explained that he chose to postpone his homecoming as he was “not confident about his life and the life of his family,” and said he is currently “rebuilding the security apparatus.”

Hariri, who holds dual Saudi and Lebanese citizenship, also insisted that his host, King Salman, treats him “like a son,” rejecting allegations that Saudi Arabia was stoking the regional crisis. He reiterated almost word-for-word sentences from his November 3 resignation statement, blaming Hezbollah and Iran for creating instability in this country. He added that he wrote that statement “by his own hand.”

The politician said his intention was “to cause a positive shock,” warding off Tehran's meddling, and said he could yet rescind his resignation if Hezbollah “promised to stay neutral in regional conflicts.”

It's unclear if Hariri’s words will be taken at face value back home in Lebanon, where media observers noted his haggard appearance, and an unfamiliar public tone that veered between the flat and the overwhelmed, such as the moment when he appeared to break down in tears.

Just before the interview aired, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said he would not accept Hariri’s resignation until he returned and spoke to him personally.

“The obscurity surrounding the condition of Prime Minister Saad Hariri since his resignation a week ago means that all positions and actions declared by him or attributed to him do not reflect the truth,” Aoun said in a statement.

Earlier, Hezbollah also said that Hariri, who was previously regarded as a Saudi ally, but not one seeking an open conflict with the powerful Shia movement, was held “hostage” in the Gulf kingdom, where several of his close family members still remain.

“We condemn the blunt, bare-faced Saudi intervention in our domestic affairs,” said Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah Friday, calling for the PM to come back. “Any offence to the Lebanese Prime Minister is an offence to all Lebanese, even when he is our adversary.”

Hezbollah believes that Hariri’s detention represents a power play by Riyadh in its proxy conflict with Tehran that is currently being played out in several neighboring states.

Local media reported that the Saudis planned to replace Saad Hariri with his older brother Bahaa, in a bid to rein in the perceived Shia influence, but these suggestions have so far been rejected by the current PM’s Future movement. “We are not a herd of sheep or a piece of property to hand over from one person to the other,” said Interior Minister Nohad Machnouk earlier this week.

Twitter no longer believes in “speaking truth to power” – updated rules
Twitter no longer believes in “speaking truth to power,” according to its latest rules update in the midst of US lawmakers’ frantic hunt for “Russian meddling” in social media.

The microblogging site’s rules, under the section “Abusive Behavior,” currently state: “We believe in freedom of expression and open dialogue, but that means little as an underlying philosophy if voices are silenced because people are afraid to speak up.” On November 2, it read “We believe in freedom of expression and in speaking truth to power.”

Incidentally, on November 1, Twitter, along with Google and Facebook, was grilled by US lawmakers in an ongoing witch-hunt for “Russian influence” that may have led to interference in the 2016 presidential election.

In its testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this week, Twitter revealed it has used a vast array of tenuous criteria to define accounts as “Russia-linked,” and also admitted it had censored the hashtags #PodestaEmails and #DNCLeaks tweets during the 2016 US presidential election campaign in an effort to limit public exposure to leaked documents describing the Democratic National Committee’s efforts to boost Clinton as the Democratic Party’s preferred candidate during the primaries.

Twitter Associate General Counsel Sean Edgett claimed many of those tweets were “automated” and hidden by anti-spam systems. He also admitted that less than 4 percent of them came from potential “Russian-linked” accounts.

Last week, Twitter also announced it was banning all ads from RT and Sputnik, citing the same allegations of meddling in the 2016 US election. That, despite the company previously trying to engage RT in a special US election advertising package, which RT declined.

The changes to Twitter’s rules were apparently made as part of a November 3 attempt to “clarify” them.

In a statement, the company said that it wanted to make it clear that “context is crucial when evaluating abusive behavior and determining appropriate enforcement actions.”

A separate update will be issued on November 14 with more details on how the company reviews and enforces policies, according to Twitter.

RT has reached out to Twitter for comment on the change to the wording of its policy.

Saudi Arabia blames Iran for missile launched from Yemen, warns it could be considered 'act of war'
Saudi Arabia has accused Iran up being responsible for the ballistic missile launched from Yemen that targeted Riyadh airport on Saturday, warning that it could be "considered an act of war."

In a statement in the wee hours of Monday, Saudi Arabia laid the blame for the attack directly at Iran's feet, claiming it would not have happened had Iran not been supporting Houthi rebels in Yemen. "Iran's role and its direct command of its Houthi proxy in this matter constitutes a clear act of aggression that targets neighboring countries, and threatens peace and security in the region and globally," the statement reads, as cited by AP. "Therefore, the coalition's command considers this a blatant act of military aggression by the Iranian regime, and could rise to be considered as an act of war against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia."

The Saudi-led military coalition also announced it was closing off all land border crossings, seaports and airports in Yemen in response to the missile launch.

Yemeni Army's Ballistic Missile Hit Malik Khalid Airport in Saudi Arabia
TEHRAN (FNA)- The Yemeni Army confirmed on Sunday that it targeted Saudi Arabia’s Malik (King) Khalid international airport in Riyadh with a long distance Borkan H2 ballistic missile.

"Our Yemeni forces succeeded in launching a missile, a Borkan H2 long distance missile, at the King Khalid international airport in Northeastern Riyadh which was in response to the massacres committed by the US-Saudi coalition in Yemen,” Colonel Aziz Rashed, a Spokesman for the Yemeni army, said early on Sunday.

“This comes in order to even out power between the coalition and Yemen, who have been attempting to fight more than one country in the past three years," he added.

Riyadh has also confirmed the launch, but saying that Saudi Arabia's air defense intercepted the missile, bringing it down to the North of the airport.

"I have underlined many times that the enemies' capital cities are within the range of our ballistic missiles that will possibly be launched to retaliate continuation of massacre of the Yemeni people," the spokesman for the Yemen's Ansarullah movement said.

Saudi Arabia has been striking Yemen since March 2015 to restore power to fugitive president Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh. The Saudi-led aggression has so far killed at least 15,000 Yemenis, including hundreds of women and children.

Despite Riyadh's claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi bombers are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.

According to several reports, the Saudi-led air campaign against Yemen has driven the impoverished country towards humanitarian disaster, as Saudi Arabia's deadly campaign prevented the patients from travelling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

The cholera outbreak in Yemen which began in April, has also claimed over 2,100 lives and has infected 750,000, as the nation has been suffering from what the World Health Organization (WHO) describes as the “largest epidemic in the world” amid a non-stop bombing campaign led by Saudi Arabia. Also Riyadh's deadly campaign prevented the patients from traveling abroad for treatment and blocked the entry of medicine into the war-torn country.

According to reports, the cholera epidemic in Yemen, which is the subject of a Saudi Arabian war and total embargo, is the largest recorded in modern history.
